When I was in high school I started to feel self conscious about my inability to tan. All of my friends had at least a bit of tan and sometimes people would glare at my legs in summertime and remark on how white they were. I used to try that horrid spray tan in a little bottle I picked up at the drugstore. It gave me that lovely shade of orange, but somehow I felt it looked better than my natural pasty white skin. Then one day I noticed a picture of myself at a party and you could see my white feet and hands, and orange legs. It was kind of hilarious actually! Back then I decided I’d stop wearing self tanner, but I also decided to stop wearing shorts. What a silly girl! If I could go back and tell my 17 year old self a thing or two, I’d include a bit about how my natural skin was beautiful and to stop caring about what others think of me. Most of the time people are too worried about themselves anyway, to think about your insecurities. Anyway, all that to say, I wear shorts now and I’m totally rocking my freckled knees and white untanned legs. ❤️ — P.S. Thanks everyone for all of your amazing hiking boot suggestions! I can’t wait to look through all of the different boots! I’ll make sure I update when I end up with a pair! . . . #annaallenclothing #annaallenpatterns #persephonepants #persephoneshorts #indiesewing #sewingpattern #sewingpatterns #etsyshop #pdfsewingpattern #pdfsewingpatterns #pdfsewing #shorts #summerwardrobe #vsco #vscocam #summertime #linen #canvas

SEWING: TOPS AND FEELING SPRING-Y
My daughter and I were feeling pretty Spring-y in our coordinating #memade tops 🌺🌹And guess what?!? Both of these were #madewithartparts made with salvaged materials from @artpartscrc in Boulder.  1) My top is a lovely cotton broderie anglaise that was sort of “peptobismol” pink- ish. I dyed it with RIT dye and I love the burgundy color that resulted. I made myself this @fibremood #fibremoodlola top, and love it.
2) @nadia_the_triple_threat found this cute floral scrap of quilting cotton and squeezed out a sleeveless #m7899 with a couple of small denim straps from the stash.
AND THE PANTS!
I styled the #fibremoodlola with white wide-legged pants here, in a dreamy deadstock Rag and Bone cream twill from Mood fabrics that became my 9th or 10th pair of @annaallen-clothing #persephonepants. I can't wait to wear these more when then weather is warmer.

Reporting live from the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival! Here’s my finished #rhinebecksweater. • If you saw my stories the other day, it was a photo finish the night before I left, and I’m so happy with it all finished. • Outfit details: Knitting hands and “KNIT CLUB” sweatshirt embroidered on a vintage chainstitch machine, plus my new favorite pair of me-made pants, the beloved #persephonepants pattern. • Ok, brb. Gotta go buy too much yarn. https://ift.tt/2NO7Idy

The cool thing with sewing is that you can make changes to a pattern to fit your body, instead of trying to manipulate an already sewn garment to fit after it has been made, which can be very time consuming and may still not fit the way you like. 👉If you don't want to slog through this long caption, link in profile for instructions on grading between sizes. #persephonepants 😉  I used to do wedding and formal dress alterations and most people would be surprised at how much it would cost to alter a dress to fit. People always assumed that it would be cheaper to alter a dress. But if you've ever done alterations you know it can be time consuming and often can take close to the same amount of time to sew a garment from scratch (although not always). You have to pick apart seams (uggghhh), unpick beading, lace or any other details that interfere with a seam you are altering. Then you make the alteration and re-sew everything back together. I won't lie, it wasn't my favorite job, but it did teach me a lot! And I want to say here, learning to alter ready-to-wear garments is a great skill to have and it can make a huge difference in how a garment will fit. ✨If you sew, you have the advantage of tweaking the pattern to fit your body before sewing the final garment together. I usually recommend sewing a test muslin or at least tissue fitting a garment to get some sort of idea of how it will fit on your body. Pay attention to the garment measurements that many pattern companies provide, as it will give you a better insight on how the garment will fit and how much ease is added into the pattern. ✨A fitting question I get asked the most, specifically for the Persephone pants, is what size to cut out if your waist size is bigger than your hip size and is it okay to grade between sizes (since there are no side seams). The answer is yes you can grade between sizes just as you would with a pattern that has side seams (except you're grading at the front and back of the pants, not the side body area). I put together a quick tutorial on how you can grade the Persephone pants between sizes if you have a larger waist to hip or a smaller waist to hip ratio. Fitting pants can feel pretty daunting if you've never attempted to sew your own pants before. I've sewn countless test muslins and will probably sew countless more in the future. If there is one thing I have learned over the years of fitting clothing, it is that it's very easy to over fit. I’ve found that applying little tweaks, done one at a time, makes the biggest difference. Sometimes those wrinkles you see are there for a purpose (sitting down, bending over etc etc.) and if you try to eliminate them, you won't be able to move! I don't think there is a right and a wrong way to fit pants or wear pants. Some people like pants that are tight fitting, while others prefer more of a roomy fit. You wear your pants the way you like to wear them! As long as you feel good in them and you are happy with how they look, that's really all that matters. If you are new to sewing and you are feeling intimidated, please don't feel bad if you don't know everything right away! If you need help, please ask! There is no shame in asking, and there is no such thing as a silly question. A great way to ask for help on Instagram is by using the hashtag #sewingsos (If there are other hashtags, leave them in the comments and I will update this post.) I hope you feel empowered to tackle a project you have been putting off because you are intimidated by it. I've found some of the most intimidating projects are the most rewarding, and also help me feel more confident in my abilities for future projects! #annaallenclothing #annaallenpatterns #pdfpatterns #persephonepants #philippapants #sewingpants #sewingjeans #fittingpants #pantsfitting #sewcialist #newtosewing #begginersewer #begginersewist #sewersofinstagram #sewingpattern #pdfsewing #pdfsewingpattern #indiepattern #indiepatterndesigner #sewingyourownwardrobe #handmadewardrobe #pants #jeans #nonstretch #nonstretchpants #makers #makersofinstagram #sewinghelp #sewingtips https://www.instagram.com/p/B7MH5fsApKM/?igshid=14jcg3fj2kcx6

My most worn pair of #philippapants which look even better as they age. I think selvedge denim really suits this pattern. Not only because of the straight side seams, but because denim breaks in so beautifully over time and stretch out just enough to be extra comfy. I find my canvas pair tends to shrink a bit every time I wash it, so my next canvas pair I plan to add an inch or so to the leg width (primarily around the calf line). I know the #persephonepants are my most popular style, but I admit I find myself wearing these tapered pants a lot more! https://www.instagram.com/p/B5DnffJgzxj/?igshid=1k0tzrkkocxcm

Today I'm wearing my canvas elastic waist pants (planning on releasing this pattern next)! I whipped these up a few days before I packed away my sewing studio this summer. I'm so glad I rushed to finish this pattern before moving. These pants and my overalls have been my favorite most-worn items! And if you're wondering, I haven't forgotten about the overalls pattern. I've been testing the pair I made for months and I have a few things I want to tweak before working on the final pattern. BUT, I hope to get those finished up soon after these elastic waist pants are released. Anyway, these pants are a dream to wear and a quick sew (always a bonus). They're the same pants as the linen pants/shorts I posted earlier (except I sized down in these). I like that there is only one pocket in the back. Did you know jeans and work pants used to be made with only one back pocket? When you think about it, how often do you actually use both back pockets? I know I only ever use one myself. These also have no side seams, just like the #persephonepants  Although these were drafted from scratch, so they do fit differently than the Persephone pants. However, the silhouette is very much alike. Anyway, I hope you are as excited about these pants/shorts as much as I am! I will do my best to get this pattern out to you as soon as I can! I'm also wearing the #lotteblouse which I hacked using the tutorial on my blog (link in bio). 🍂 https://www.instagram.com/p/B29tExQg3O0/?igshid=1uf9widoon7vb

I made these cute half-scale #persephonepants when I was creating my pattern to help with the illustrations. Because they are mini, this allowed me to take better photos of each step so I could be sure to get the entire garment in the photo. Because I’m not great at illustrating, for me tracing a photo in Inkscape helps immensely! I don’t find sewing a half-scale garment is necessary anymore, as I’ve grown a bit more confident in my illustrating skills. But I have to say I really enjoyed the process! And I don’t regret spending the extra time sewing these mini sailor pants. Just look at them! I think they are the absolute cutest! https://www.instagram.com/p/By-ZJgmgMxu/?igshid=plxsjyns50x7

Next moment I get for some selfish sewing time, I’m making a pair of off-white #persephonepants like these for my summer wardrobe. The more I think about it, the more I realize this would be such a staple. If they get dirty, so be it. They can always become garden trousers, or I will dye them with Indigo if they get really stained! I have some natural canvas from @bigduckcanvas in my stash that will work perfectly. (Shown here is the 10oz cotton canvas in cream.) https://www.instagram.com/p/By75efmgm0H/?igshid=14smq2elox4lj

SEWING: MINERVA MAKES
I am super excited to finally blog about this top I made with some fabric gifted to me by Minerva.com. I selected it last year, and it shipped out a few weeks later -- but apparently, my package took an unexpected detour to Canada. LOL The lovely Melissa Lowry of melissalowrydesign.com rerouted and got the fabric to me. Thanks!
When the fabric arrived, I knew I wanted to make this top the #m7977 --- especially after seeing the many great versions on Jessica Quirk’s blog. And I had already made one version with shorter sleeves, so I decided to hack the pattern a bit to extend the sleeve and add elastic at the cuff instead. I also added this lovely piece of black lace as an applique across the front yoke/bib.
As far as construction, I used French seams along the sides and sleeve lengths, but I sewed and "faux-serged" (Janome stitch #9 ) the sleeves on as well as the inside ruffle seam. And I pre-washed (and - gasp -dried!) the fabric before sewing so I can care for this top as I do the rest of my #sustainablewardrobe. This will be a piece I will wear often and for many years.

Worn here with Anna Allen #persephonepants in Big Sur canvas in Walnut, Nisolo suede mules, and self-made pearl necklace.

SEWING: MEADOW IN THE SPRING
I am so happy with the way this latest #PSferntop hack turned out. I can imagine wearing it with white shorts in the summer heat, and here it makes a great outfit with some cropped denim #persephonepants in Spring. A Fall look could incorporate jeans, boots and a light jacket. It is an all-season top, for sure, and destined to be a closet favorite. So, I used my adjustments from the last time, when I added a longer puffy sleeve – but I also used Casey’s #squareneck expansion. And I love it!
This lightweight 100% Oeko-Tex certified rayon challis in “dim” by Art Gallery from Oak Fabrics was lovely to work with, and the results are a light but soft top that holds a flowy shape and drapes beautifully. The online description reads: “Windblown wildflowers in colorful green, yellow, aqua, red, and peach pop against a black background on this potent rayon challis, designed for Pat Bravo's IndyFolk collection.”
Top pattern: PatternScout #psferntop hacked to puffy sleeves and #squareneck expansion
Fabric: Art Galley Meadow rayon challis
Pants pattern: Anna Allen #persephonepants, exposed the button fly after-the-fact and chopped a couple of inches off in length to frayed edge.
Fabric: regular blue denim from Joann Fabrics
Belt: made by Zeke :)

SEWING: SAGEBRUSH IN MOAB
I have one last series of photos from our family trip to Moab last month: featuring the @FridayPatternCompany #sagebrush top.
This top is such a fun and easy make - this is my fourth one if I include the little hacks I have done so far. This here was a straightforward version with no modifications, but I made a matching mask and scrunchie with a bit of extra fabric. The fabric was salvaged at @artpartscc as was the mask elastic.
Worn here with a green canvas pair of #persephonepants, Kala sunnies, and Nisolo suede mules.
