AO WD R1: Ekaterina Alexandrova/Anna Kalinskaya def. Miyu Kato/Aldila Sutjiadi [13] 6-3, 0-6, 7-5 Match Stats
📸 Eurosport IL
The difference between both pairs looked thin considering E. Alexandrova/A. Kalinskaya won 2 more points than Dila/M. Kato, but the former pair's anticipation from the baseline helped them a lot to give the latter pair lesser options to move forward. On the other hand, the net game carried Dila/M. Kato a lot starting from the second set, but it was insufficient for them to stay in the match as they were made to stay back along the way. As a result, even though both pairs had 10 break points each, M. Kato/Dila had a 40% conversion rate, but their service games were insufficient to carry them under pressure.
Service game-wise, it appeared that each pair had their own service game strengths. Despite landing 74% of their first serves, Dila/M. Kato could only win 15% lesser points than E. Alexandrova/A. Kalinskaya, whose unreturned serves aided them to get out of trouble, especially with their 7 aces in between. Interestingly, E. Alexandrova/A. Kalinskaya won 15% lesser points than Dila/M. Kato on their second serves even if both players double-faulted five times.
In the second round, Arina Rodionova/Taylah Preston awaits, where they defeated fellow wild card recipients Kaylah McPhee/Astra Sharma 7-6(4), 7-6(0) in another highly competitive match. Knowing both pairs, this could end up in another tussle, with the most balanced pair (between the net and the baseline on return, especially from their anticipation as a start) would stand out by the end of the match. This can be tough but an exciting watch!

It’s nice to see Anna Rodionova is still training. I’m not sure she’s ever going to get on a World team again but it’s nice seeing her swing bars.

but anyway i want to say how proud i am of gelya, vlaza, and listy <3 i have been following them since they were literal children and i am so proud that they are now OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS
in the years since i started following russian WAG seriously, so many talented juniors fell by the wayside/got injured/got hit by puberty/god knows what else
who would’ve guessed that maria paseka would be more successful than grishina and komova.. and lilia akhaimova would be an olympic champion and not tatiana nabieva or elena eremina.. and freaking daria spiridonova came from nowhere in the last quad
who remembers these girls:
nastya grishina, anna rodionova, alla sosnitskaya, maria bondereva, maria kharenkova (at least she competed a bunch for russia in 14-15 and is still competing now) daria skrypnik, katya sokova, valaria saifulina, elena eremina (kill me now), angelina simakova, ksenia klimenko wtf

I still think about that 2012 Russian quad all the time. They had so much beauty, grace and talent, it’s unbelievable. I mean... Aliya Mustafina, Viktoria Komova, Anastasia Grishina, Tatiana Nabieva, Yulia Belokobylskaya, Anna Dementyeva, Yulia Inshina and technically Anna Rodionova too. And Maria Paseka.
#russian gymnastics history right there#i keep thinking of myzdrikova but she was technically beijing quad#i bet i forgot someone really important
