Gifts for your reader/writer friends!

(Hello my dudes, my ladies, and my pals! With Christmas coming up, I thought it would be nice to make a list of gifts to give to your writing/reading friends for those of you who are just too tired at this point to come up with anything. I apologize for any grammatical/informational errors.)

•Book lights

•Book-based candles (irewolfcandlesandcuriosities is just one business that sells them)

•Book merchandise (this includes face masks, shirts, pins, bookmarks, art cards,) (redbubble will probably have something for most books, especially traditionally published ones)

•Book sleeves (booknookSleeves and Bookgizmo are just two businesses that sell them)

•A book subscription box (goscribbler or Button Poetry have them)

•Subscription to a writing Masterclass

•If they have an Instagram account, book props (fake flowers, vintage cards/paper, old-looking necklaces, )

•A case for their kindle

•Commission art of their characters/characters they kin

•Try to find special editions of their Favorite Books, especially if there’s extra scenes/an interview/a new shiny cover

•If they’re a writer and they have been researching a certain topic specifically, get them a magazine based off that thing to help their studies. (Ex: one of my characters is in the painting restoration business so my dad got me a book on different painting techniques)

•Small White boards (especially for your Plotter writer friend)

•If they happen to cosplay a book character, find outfits at goodwill that they could use in their cosplays.

•Get them a writing Prompt book (easily found at the book section of 5 and Below or at B&N)

•Make them a soap and name/base it off a book/characater they like/made (here’s some links to soap tutorials)

For those on a tight budget-

•If you’re unable to buy anything for them, customize a Spotify playlist for their reading/writing time

•Draw them some fanart that they can see when they’re feeling down about their writing

•You can also make them themed bookmarks with stock paper and markers if you’re on a budget, readers lose bookmarks at a very fast rate and they will greatly appreciate it

•Origami. (don’t question it)

•Get them some of their favorite snacks for when they’re writing/reading

•Get them a nice mug that reminds you of them, along with a box of a new flavor of tea (if they like tea) for when they’re reading/writing

•If you can find a thrift store with cheap paperbacks, buy books that when you align the titles together, the first letters spell out their name. (Ex: my name is Rae, so Ready Player One, Anne of Green Gables, Erratic And Unnecessary.)

•Stickers. Just stickers.

•Download a bunch of tiktoks and use the Vont app to make a compilation based off a book series they like/ or writing tips (you can also do this with meme formats on Pinterest and using the Phonto app for words)

•If they like buddy reading, find a few free kindle ebooks (they’re everywhere) and make a buddy reading schedule for you guys (bonding!)

•Make a physical list of names for imaginary people/places/landmarks and decorate it for them in case they ever get stuck on names

A Picker's Guide to Round Top

Round Top, TX, population 91. It is surprising to many that this modest little town in the middle of central Texas half way between Austin and Houston is home to one of the finest antique markets in the world. This mecca of vintage and antiques from all over carries with it the most fascinating people, beautiful rolling hills, and a local culture and flavor all its own. We want to take you along Hwy 237 through the 20 miles worth of vendors to share tips on how to tackle Round Top, and why we love it so much.

Round Top is the town that started the festival with the Original Round Top Antiques Fair , but now, after 50 years, the show extends through more towns along the stretch including Carmine, Warrenton, Fayetteville and La Grange.

This year the official dates of the show are extended for a full three weeks instead of just two. September 15 through October 8. We're in the habit of catching the early part of the show to hopefully get the good picking, but mid and late are great too for a couple of reasons. Not all the vendors/shows have officially opened and the earlier you are there, the less bargaining power you have. Be sure to check out Antique Weekend for a full list of all the shows and the dates they are open. All the vendors open up when they are ready and close when they are ready. To be safe, 10 AM - 5 PM is the best time for picking.

Lodging

We don't recommend just one day of shopping, so it is a good idea to make it an overnight trip. There are plenty of places to stay, but most are small boutique lodgings. Book early for the best selection! We've had the pleasure of staying in some pretty lovely places. Here are a few of our favorites:

Hillcrest Inn: right smack in the middle of Warrenton and easy to walk to a lot of the tented vendors

How to Dress:

While out in the fields be sure to take layers because of the varying Texas temps, a good hat, sunscreen, and maybe even a handkerchief to shield from the dust.

Where to Shop:

We love to spend time in Northgate field for a little more global style, Ex-Cess and Ex-Cess II for European finds and eclectic, creative uses of vintage, The Compound for easy parking and serious eye candy, Bar W for lots of choices with a little bit of everything, and one of the newer venues, Market Hill, which has awesome vendors, air conditioning and nice restrooms. Other great shows include La Bahia and Blue Hills. We'd be remiss not to mention some great solo vendors along the trail like Box Road, Bill Moore's Antiques and Junk Gypsy World Headquarters (for a lot of Round Top fashion!). Every trip we make to Round Top allows us to visit a new vendor or field and we are NEVER disappointed with the result. A new discovery every time.

Where to Eat:

In addition to layered clothing, you're going to need a great pair of walking shoes because you will be on your feet all. day. long. But don't worry, there are food and drink trucks everywhere you look, as well as super charming restaurants to sit and rest for a spell. We ALWAYS make it a point to stop at the Texas Rose Antique Show not only for some sweet vendor tents, but for the delicious food trailer on site. If you love a perfect rosemary chicken salad or pimiento cheese, this stop is calling your name. The portions are quite big, so share with a friend! It would also be a travesty if you didn't stop in at Henkel Square for the famous Royers Cafe. Lunch on lovely sandwiches and salads, but be sure to save room for their world famous pie. To finish out the evening and talk about your favorite finds of the day, enjoy the porch of Los Patrones for margaritas and Mexican food. We never miss this stop during our stay in Round Top.

Night Life:

There are always festivities happening around these parts in the evenings. Vendors and locals are celebrating another successful day while visiting with friends they haven't seen since the last show. One of the more famous events is the Junk-O-Rama Prom. Don your favorite vintage prom dress or cowboy duds and head over to Zapp Hall for a great time under the Texas stars. Don't forget your boots!

Hai guys.

Kalian pencinta hewan dan penggemar kosmetik? Tentunya sebagian dari kalian tau yang namanya animal testing kan? Animal testing atau percobaan terhadap hewan adalah suatu bentuk penelitian yang menggunakan hewan sebagai objek percobaan. Beberapa sebutan lainnya yakni animal experimentation, animal research, in vivo testing, dan vivisection. Jika kalian membaca atau mendengan suatu perusahaan menggunakan istilah tersebut, artinya mereka menggunakan hewan dalam proses penelitiannya. Tujuannya apa sih? Yang banyak kita dengar adalah untuk penelitian kesehatan, pangan, dan kosmetik. Sayangnya, dalam proses tersebut, tak jarang hewan yang tak berdosa tersebut mati terbunuh dan setelah penelitian berakhir banyak hewan yang dibunuh dengan keji untuk mencegah interaksi dengan hewan yang akan menjadi objek penelitian selanjutnya.

Hewan yang sering digunakan dalam penelitian biasanya tikus, mencit, tikus, atau hewan pengerat lainnya. Pada tahun 2001 di Inggris, tercatat terdapat sekitar 1,6 juta ekor mencit yang digunakan dalam penelitian suatu produk baik itu kesehatan, pangan, atau kosmetik. Selain itu terdapat pula 8.273 ekor karnivora, termasuk anjing yang digunakan dalam animal testing tersebut. Umumnya perusahaan yang menggunakan metode animal testing berasal dari pembiakan atau penangkaran hewan, sedangkan untuk primara sebagian besar masih berasal dari alam liar.

Berberapa percobaan yang sering dilakukan antara lain xenotransplanation (“Xeno”), kalo baca transplanation aja sebagian dari kalian pasti kebayang kayak pemindahan organ ya gak sih? Yup. Xeno adalah metode yang dilakukan dengan mentransfer atau memindahkan organ dari satu species ke species lain, seperti memndahkan organ ginjal dan hati babi ke primata. Dalam proses tersebut, tidaklah jarang apabila hewan uji coba tersebut mengalami gangguan atau kegagalan dan bahkan mati.

Kemudian ada juga animal testing dalam rangka uji toksikologi yang digunakan untuk menguji produk akhir, seperti pestisida, zat untuk medis, dan zat aditif makanan, ataupun senyawa kimia yang terkandung dalam suatu produk pada hewan sehingga terlihat efeknya secara fisiologi pada hewan tersebut. Pada jenis tes toksisitas akut, untuk mengevaluasi toksisitas dari suatu zat yang, hal ini dapat membunuh 50% dari objek yang sedang diuji. Uji ini pada tahun 2002 telah dihapuskan.

Selanjutnya masih ada uji kosmetik dan uji obat. Uji produk kosmetik adalah uji hasil akhir ataupun zat-zat yang digunakan dalam pembuatan kosmetik untuk manusia. Hal ini yang paling sering kita perbincangkan. Uji ini dilakukan untuk memastikan produk aman pada manusia namun untuk mendapatkan hasil yang diinginkan, hewan yang menjadi objek penelitian harus merasakan penderitaannya terutama hewan yang terjangkit penyakit disebabkan oleh zat-zat yang ternyata memberikan efek samping. Banyak yang menjadi cacat, kehilangan organ-organnya seperti mata, tangan, dan kaki, bahkan kematian.

Uji untuk obat. Nah, kalo ini kayaknya banyak banget deh, bahkan gak jarang ya di toko-toko obat cina, di dalam toplesnya ada ular, kalajengking, dan lain sebagainya yang dijadikan bahan untuk obat-obatan.

Sedangkan untuk pelajar atau siswa, kegiatan uji coba lab menggunakan hewan disebut juga uji prakilinik. Uji ini dilakukan sebelum dilaksanakan pada klinis manusia untuk mengurangi resiko saat dilakukan pada manusia. Biasanya menggunakan hewan kecil seperti katak dan kodok. Efek samping dari dosis yang diberikan ditanggung oleh hewan yang tidak berdosa demi menyelamatkan kehidupan manusia. Jujur, pada saat duduk di bangku sekolah menengah pertama, saya dan beberapa kawan pernah mengikuti pelajaran biologi dan ikut di dalam proses uji lab menggunakan hewan katak dan tikus. Kami bius hewan tersebut sampai benar-benar tidak sadar dan kemudian sang guru mulai membedah isi perut hewan tersebut, at the end? mereka dibiarkan mati karena sudah dikoyak-koyak untuk dipelajari anatomi tubuhnya. Sungguh tragis.

Selain harus menanggung derita dari berbagai jenis zat dan produk obat yang diuji, ternyata mereka juga masih diperlakukan tidak layak. Banyak dari hewan yang ditempatkan dalam kandang yang kotor dan tidak layak. Tak jarang kebutuhan nutrisi mereka kurang diperhatikan. Bahkan ada yang memperlakukan hewan tersebut dengan tidak baik, seperti diikat atau ditempatkan dalam kandang yang sempit. Padahal hewan-hewan tersebut telah banyak memberikan konstribusi penting bagi kehidupan manusia. Hal ini tentu perlu diperhatikan dan dibuatkan aturan yang jelas tentang bagaimana pola perawatan serta prosedur yang baik bagi hewan-hewan tersebut.

Berdasarkan dari penjelasan yang singkat ini, animal testing sebaiknya dikurangi bahkan dihentikan! Dengan berkembangnya teknologi, altermatif metode untuk mengujui suatu zat tanpa harus menyakiliti hewan telah banyak ditemukan. Beberapa metode tersebut antara lain, komputerisasi prediksi, in vitro melalui jaringan atau sel hewan atau manusia dalam tabung kultur, penggunaan protein dan enzim, ataupun penggunaan ‘jasa manusia’ langsung yang aman dan sesuai bioetika. Metode-metode tersebut lebih aman dan bisa menjadi solusi kontroversi animal testing yang telah berlangsung lama.

Pada beberapa penelitian, zat-zat yang berhasil lolos uji pada animal testing, memberikan efek berbeda pada manusia. Contoh kasus, obat arthritis Vioxx aman dan baik bagi jantung hewan tetapi menyebabkan sedikitnya 140,000 kasus serangan jantung dan stroke, dan data ini hanya di wilayah Amerika saja, belum di daerah lainnya. Dr. Richard Klausner dari US National Institute (NCI) menyatakan banyak studi yang telah berhasil menyembuhkan kanker di mencit, tetapi nihil di manusia. Asap rokok, arsenik, asbes, benzen, dan alkohol ternyata aman digunakan berdasarkan studi pada hewan, tetapi di manusia efeknya sangat berbahaya.

Penjelasan di atas tentunya bisa menjadi penambah wawasan bagi kita bahwa tidak semua hasil aman dari animal testing maka aman pula bagi manusia, begitu pula sebaliknya. Uji coba pada hewan dengan alasan agar aman saat digunakan pada manusia menjadi tidak beralasan. Dalam 10 tahun penelitian internasional, menyatakan bahwa penggunaan test pada kultur sel manusia (tube-test), lebih efektif dan lebih mudah diaplikasikan dalam mekanisme pengobatan pada manusia dibandingkan penelitian tradisional yang menggunakan hewan sebagai objek penelitiannya. Jadi mengapa masih melakukan uji pada satwa?

Hal lain yang dapat kita lakukan adalah selektif terhadap produk yang kita beli. Dengan tidak membeli produk dari perusahaan yang melakukan animal testing, kita ikut berpartisipasi mengurangi penderitaan para hewan. Perusahaan yang tidak melakukan animal testing umumnya menggunakan label non-animal testing, meskipun ada juga yang tidak mencantumkannya. Kalau diperhatikan, rata-rata yang masuk ke dalam list animal testing bener-bener produk yang biasa kita temui di mall-mall atau tempat perbelanjaan yah. Seperti kebanyakan dari produk Johnson & Johnson, L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, dan masih banyak lagi produk lainnya yang menggunakan metode animal testing. Untuk Estee Lauder sendiri dulu sudah pernah diminta untuk menghentikan penggunaan metode animal testing, tapi nampaknya hal tersebut belum ditanggapi dengan serius oleh Estee Lauder.

Uni Eropa secara resmi melarang uji coba kosmetik terhadap binatang di Eropa dengan adanya pernyataan pelarangan impor serta penjualan produk dan bahan kosmetik yang diujicobakan terhadap binatang di Uni Eropa mulai 11 Maret 2013.

Jadi, saat ini kalian yang sudah baca blog ini tentunya semakin teredukasi dong ya tentang bahaya dan konsekuensi yang didapat dari produk yang diuji pada binatang. Karena faktanya, tidak ada jaminan bahwa menggunakan hasil uji terhadap hewan akan berdampak positif pada manusia. Lalu apa yang harus kita lakukan? Memulai dengan tidak membeli produk-produk yang menggunakan metode animal testing sebagai bentuk penolakan akan metode tersebut. Kemudian usahakan untuk melihat kemasan yang tercantum logo yang menandakan produk tersebut cruelty free resmi seperti di bawah ini:

Amerika Serikat, India, Norway, Israel, Eropa, Australia, New Zealand, secara resmi menyatakan melarang penggunaan animal testing, namun selebihnya masih menganggap animal testing adalah hal yang biasa saja. Mari kita dukung perubahan ini, dengan terus aktif dalam menandatangani petisi-petisi tentang animal testing free sebagai salah satu bentuk usaha kita agar hewan tidak lagi dijadikan objek penelitian demi kepentingan manusia.

Desperate and Broken

A/N: A request from @soulfulreid for a Spencer x Reader where the two are best friends and she realizes that he has been pulling away from her. She finds out he’s back on drugs. @coveofmemories

Something is definitely wrong with him.

Why hasn’t he said anything to me? We’ve been friends for nearly a decade. What could be going on in his life that is so horrible he couldn’t tell me? Spencer had been to hell and back in his years with the Bureau. He’d been shot multiple times. His boss’s wife had been shot dead with her child just upstairs. He’d had his own girlfriend shot right before his eyes. He’d been captured by a serial killer and tortured for days. He’d been addicted to drugs because of it. And you’d been there through it all.

But lately something was definitely wrong. His skin had taken on a drawn look, his eyes sinking further and further into his skull, as though he were actually in the act of dying. He’d been pulling away not only from his friends at the BAU, but you as well. He was pulling away from you...it was extremely unlike him. He told you everything. Had you done something wrong and not noticed? Couldn’t be.

It didn’t matter. Something was wrong with your best friend and you needed to figure out what it was, so instead of calling him and having him blow you off, as he had been apt to do lately, you pushed yourself up off the couch, put your hair in the crappiest bun possible and walked down the street in your pajamas. You looked like hell, but honestly you didn’t give a flying fuck.

As you walked into Spencer’s building, you started to grow hot with anger. After ten years, what the fuck wouldn’t he want to tell you; you were hurt. Furiously, you knocked on the door and waited until you heard Spencer on the other side of the door. “What is it, Y/N?” he said, seemingly aggravated. Had you interrupted something? “I can’t hang out today.” You heard footsteps start to walk away from the door, so you banged on the door again and screamed back.

“I don’t care!” you yelled, the smoke practically coming out of your ears. “Something is wrong and you’re not telling me. I will not have you push me out. Open the goddamn door!”

With a quick motion that startled you, causing you to hop back from the door, Spencer opened up. He looked like absolute hell. The sinking look in his face was even more exaggerated. “What’s wrong?” you asked pointedly. “Are you sick? Is work getting to you? Tell me,” you croaked. “My best friend is in pain and he won’t let me help.”

Without saying a word, Spencer turned away from the door, so you invited yourself in. “You can’t just come over here whenever you want,” he snapped, the hair practically matting to his forehead. It looked like he hadn’t taken a shower in does. What the fuck was going on? Plus, you’d been inviting yourself over to his apartment for practically nine years at this point - and now it was a problem? No. Just further proof that something was very, very wrong.

In your standoff, you also said nothing, instead looking around his apartment for some indication of what was wrong with him. Then you spotted it. On his bookshelf. Ever since you’d met him, he had his books in the same place on each shelf. He never moved them. But one of his copies of Anna Karenina, the Russian one maybe, was in the wrong place - on its side, a shelf below where it normally was. When you made the step over to the bookshelf, he lunged toward you in an attempt to rip the book from you, but you pulled away and ran across the room, opening the book as you went.

This was his English copy of the novel and he’d hollowed it out. Spencer had hollowed out a book. You knew something was wrong. Inside was the dilauded he swore he’d never get into again. You were there nearly eight years before when he first got addicted to it. But that had been Tobias Henkel’s fault. This...why? He’d gotten past this. He had people to talk to. “What the hell is this?” you screamed, throwing the empty book across the floor and holding up the bottle. “This is why you’ve been puling away from me? Because you’re into this garbage again?”

The determination and anger in his eyes immediately softened to a look of disappointment. He attempted to open his mouth, but nothing came out. “Why Spence?” you cried, hot tears falling onto the floor beneath you. “What could be going on in your life that would cause you to turn to drugs rather than me?”

“I don’t want to unload my work on you,” he cracked, shuffling his feet back and forth. “I struggle every day with the images I see and you didn’t sign up for that.”

“I did!” you yelled, your neck straining in anger as you ran toward his bedroom, which faced an alleyway. “I didn’t join the BAU, but I’m your best friend! I signed on for helping you through whatever you came up against and vice versa! At least, that’s what I thought!” As you opened the window, he attempted to stop you, but you hurled the bottle out of the window and watched as it smashed the opposing wall, the glass shattering into a million pieces and the liquid seeping into the concrete.

“Y/N! Dammit!” he exclaimed, turning around and knocking a mess of crap off his desk. “Do you know what I have to go through to get that?”

“Yes!” you screamed, walking up to him and pushing him in the chest. “Or don’t you remember how you told me about all of this eight years ago!” The heated tears continued to flow as you walked out of his bedroom and he ran after you, grabbing your wrists and turning you to him.

“I’m sorry,” he said, his lip quivering with disappointment. He looked utterly heartbroken, sick and desperate, and it broke you. He was deserving of so much more than this. “I didn’t mean to disappoint you. It seems I disappoint everyone.”

Leaning into him, you began to sob, beating his chest with your fists as he continued to apologize. “This isn’t about me being disappointed,” you cried. “It’s about you. You’re in such pain that you felt the need to turn to drugs. You’re hurting, that’s why I’m devastated. It has nothing to do with disappointment.”

As he pushed you away, you thought that maybe you had said the wrong thing, that he was going to dive right back into the drugs and forget this conversation ever happened, but he didn’t. He reached into the cabinet and pulled out another bottle of dilauded, and another, and another, until he returned to you with six bottles of drugs from all over the apartment. Taking them and putting them in your bag, you made a note to find a way to properly dispose of them later. Your anger had caused you to throw the one out the window, but if you did that with the rest of them someone might take notice and trace them back to him. “It’s gonna be okay, Spence,” you said, wrapping your arms around his neck. “You need NA meetings again. You need to talk to someone. If it can’t be me, then someone, please. I can’t watch you like this.”

“I’ll get help,” he cracked. “I promise...I’m sorry. I never wanted...”

You placed your finger on his lips, silently telling him to stop. You didn’t want an apology. You wanted him to get help. “You’re gonna get through this again. I’m going to make sure of it.”
