BUDAPEST (Reuters) – Dogs have a type of infrared sensor in the tip of their nose which enables them to detect minute changes in temperature such as when other animals are nearby, according to new research.

Scientists at Sweden’s Lund University and Hungary’s Eotvos Lorand University say the discovery can help better understand how predators detect their prey when other senses such as sight, hearing or smell are hindered.

In their study printed in Scientific Reports, a journal published by Nature Research, scientists found that the naked, wet skin surface at the tip of a dog’s nose, which is full of nerve endings, worked as an infrared sensor.

“Dogs are able to sense the thermal radiation coming from warm bodies or weak thermal radiation and they can also direct their behavior according to this signal,” said Anna Balint, lead author of the study.

“We tested whether we can find an area in the brain that shows higher activity if they are exposed to a warmer than to a colder object,” she said.

Brain scans showed increased brain activity when dogs were shown objects that were warmer than their surroundings.

“It is possible that other carnivorans possess a similar infrared sense and that adds a new chapter to the story of prey-predator relationships,” said Ronald Kroger, a sensory scientist at Lund University.

“Predator hunting strategies have to be re-evaluated and the biology of prey animals has to be revisited with body heat sensing predators in mind,” he added.

Among the dogs involved in the test were golden retrievers and border collies.

Die Berufsfachschule des Kreises Wesel in Kamp-Lintfort gratuliert 58 staatlich geprüften Altenpflegerinnen und Altenpflegern zu den bestandenen Abschlussprüfungen und wünscht ihnen alles Gute für den beruflichen Werdegang. Mit diesen Prüfungen ist die Übergangszeit der verschiedenen dreijährigen Pflegeausbildungen beendet. Seit Oktober 2022 werden ausschließlich die Ausbildungen zur Pflegefachfrau, zum Pflegefachmann bzw. die entsprechende Assistenzausbildung angeboten. Los perros tienen una especie de sensor infrarrojo en la punta de la nariz que les permite detectar pequeñas variaciones en la temperatura, como cuando otros animales están cerca, según una investigación.

Científicos de la Universidad Lund de Suecia y la Universidad Eötvös Loránd de Hungría afirman que el descubrimiento puede ayudar a comprender mejor cómo detectan los depredadores a sus presas cuando están afectados otros sentidos, como la vista, el oído o el olfato.

En su estudio publicado en Scientific Reports, revista publicada por Nature Research, los investigadores descubrieron que la superficie de la piel en la punta de la nariz de un perro, que está llena de terminaciones nerviosas, opera como un sensor infrarrojo.

365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #398: A Woman, a Part (2016) - dir. Elisabeth Subrin (52 Films by Women 2017: #33)

For my final film viewing of 2017, I chose A Woman, a Part, which appeared in select theaters in March and is currently available to stream either on Netflix or via Showtime on Demand. Given the post-Weinstein shock waves that have been sent through Hollywood and the rest of the world for the past few months, it seemed right that the last movie I watched this year should be a project written and directed by a woman film director, starring an actress in her early forties playing a character who is, like her, an actress of that same age.

Anna Baskin (Maggie Siff) is a TV star who is burnt out. Frustrated by producers and writers who refuse to hear her input, Anna abruptly leaves Los Angeles and flies home to Brooklyn, where she tries to reconnect with her two oldest friends from her downtown NYC theater days, playwright Isaac (John Ortiz) and former actress Kate (Cara Seymour). Tensions flare up when the trio revisits the reasons why Anna left the group for the bright lights of Hollywood and Anna discovers that Isaac has written a play inspired by her own early life and career. Anna must decide whether she wants to return to the West Coast or break her five-year contract, the ramifications for which would prevent her from doing acting in any capacity. She is at a crossroads, lost in the confusion of whether she is a woman or just a series of parts she has played.

I’m glad that I saw A Woman, a Part but I didn’t enjoy it, primarily because there was so much potential that was undermined by the film’s unlikeable characters. Some interesting actors pop up from time to time - Khandi Alexander as Anna’s agent, Dagmara Dominczyk as Isaac’s wife, Lucas Near-Verbrugghe as a New York love interest for Anna, Eszter Balint as a member of the main characters’ theater circle - but the focus is on Anna, Isaac and Kate and they are hard to feel much for. Anna in particular is distant, even as she deals with recognizably painful hurdles. The ending also leaves a lot to be desired. But maybe what matters in the end isn’t whether the story has a resolution; as with the women fighting to be heard in Hollywood right now, the stories are ongoing and constantly evolving.

BBC Two encarga seis episodios de Mandy, comedia sobre una mujer que sueña con criar dobermans pinscher y para superar los obstáculos alquila su habitación en Airbnb y coge varios trabajos de corta duración y sueldo escaso. Escrita, dirigida y protagonizada por Diane Morgan (After Life, Frayed). Michelle Greenidge (After Life, Code 404) será Lola, amiga y confidente de Mandy.
