Never take no for an answer if you believe in something. It’s an advice that Brendan lived after, that you fight for the things you believe in.
Apparently that something wasn’t your relationship. The end of sophomore year also became the end of your almost two year long relationship.
The image of him standing there with his room packed up, clothes, random things he’s collected during college and himself. Tears running down both of your cheeks as he utters the words I’m letting you go baby. It’s for the best.” It wasn’t for the best, not according to you. It was the worst.
Las Vegas took your best friend, other half, the love of your life away from you. So for that you will always hate the city that never sleep. Which makes it even worse that your friend group decided that you should go there for a break after midterms.
You were going to the city that took everything.
It had taken a lot of nagging and negotiation from your friends to even make you consider going. A lot of pep talks from the other Wolverines and with the promise that he wasn’t going to be in the city but in another state for a game it felt safe to go. So you did.
Bags packed and a good feeling you got on the plane and watched Michigan get smaller down below. Even though you had been apprehensive about going it felt good to get out of Ann Arbor, ever since you came back to Michigan all you could think of was Brendan. That he wasn’t there anymore but what hurt the most that he wasn’t yours anymore. Truss, Holtzy and Philippe had tried their hardest to make you forget about it and it worked for the most part.
It worked until Truss along with Dylan had the bright idea to set you up on a date. The guy was cute sure and almost funny but he wasn’t Briss and everyone knew that. It had all ended with you in tears in one of the hockey houses, crying about how you just wanted Brendan back while Philippe hugged you close and Truss apologised profusely. After that fiasco they’d decided to not meddle with your dating life again.
You just weren’t aware of the fact that Jacob and Holtzy had regular contact with Brendan about you and why he had decided to end it. But that was about to change thanks to the evil masterminds you call friends.
In reality you should’ve suspected something was going on because of the fact that during the whole flight your best friend had been on her phone. Fingers tapping away on the screen focused on a conversation she clearly didn’t want you to see. Which was odd since the two of you shared everything but not wanting to step over boundaries you stayed silent. Just focusing on the movie playing on your small screen or listening to music to pass the time.
Another suspicious thing you should’ve picked up on was that only you and your best friend climbed into the Uber, the rest of the group catching another cab and that the two vehicles went in completely different directions.
The Uber stopped outside of an apartment building, it looked brand new. With a glass door that leads to the reception with fancy furniture and a chandelier hanging from the roof. It felt far more expensive than two college kids could afford. That made the alarm bells go off inside your mind. What the hell was going on?
Grabbing your friends upper arm you drag her away from the conversation she was having with the receptionist. A look asking her wtf is happening which she only responds with a you’ll thank me later before she pushes you inside the elevator, pressing one of the buttons before the door closes in your face. Mind going haywire about what’s going on you starts pacing in the small space. Only coming back to reality when the elevator lets out a ding and the doors slide open. Looking up you feel your body go frigid and eyes widening in disbelief.
The only thought going through your mind being that you’re actually going to kill your friends as your gaze meets Brendan. His posture equally as stiff as your own but his face doesn’t have the same shocked expression yours does. Before your mind can process what’s going on your hand is already pressing the buttons trying to get out of the situation. But Brendan is faster as he slips through the doors before they close, pressing the stop button making the elevator come to a halt. Trapping the both of you inside.
“Don’t say anything just listen for a second. Please.” Cheeks heating up from the anger that’s starting to flare up you let out a snort at his words. He left you and now he just expects you to listen while he talks? Has he gone crazy. The stubborn part of you almost wins the internal fight but you don’t have it in you to say anything so you just stay quiet. Brendan takes this as a sign to talk because after that the words spill out of him like a waterfall.
“I know I made a shit decision. I know I hurt both of us when I broke up with you and nothing I do or say can take that back. I’ve almost called you a hundred times since that day. I really believed that it was the right choice to make, I didn’t want to be the reason you didn’t get to where you wanted to go. I didn’t wanna hold you back from what I know you can be. I was scared me not being in Michigan would tear us apart and just ending it felt like the easy way out, spare us all the fights that could’ve happened.”
Raising your hand Brendan snaps his mouth shut, waiting for you to either slap him silly or curse him out. Neither of those things happened. Tears now freely running down your face Brendan feels his heart crack seeing how much he’s truly hurt you.
“You did a shitty thing Brendan. It was supposed to be a discussion, not something you can decide for me, for the both of us.”
“I know that now and I’m willing to fight for this. If you still want me.”
“I could never not want you Brendan. But things can’t and will never go back to how they were you do know that right?” Brendan nods his head in understanding. The hopeful glint he had in his eyes before is fading away with your words. Even if things will never go back to how they were before he is still Brendan and you’re still you, he is still the love of your life and that won’t change.
“Good now how about we start from the beginning? Hi I’m Y/N.”
“Hey Y/N I’m Brendan and I have a feeling you’re my future wife.”

⭐️! Any fic just go wild!
Thank you, sis! I guess I'll talk about praise you.
The story was born from a wonderfully detailed fake dating prompt by @calculated2stagger. I knew that I wanted to make it a college AU, but wasn't sure if I should put them in a big college town (Ann Arbor was a contender, NGL) or in a big city like New York. I ultimately landed on the latter because it opened the doors to a more non-traditional college experience. They're all a bit more like young professionals because of the opportunities in the city.
I knew I wanted to make Lexi an NYU/Tisch student (because duh), and for Fez to have some sort of artistic ambitions that they could bond over. A comic book artist felt like the right fit - it's one part hip and one part nerdy. (Fez definitely geeks out on something in every universe.) TBH I'd hoped to incorporate a little bit more of the comic book stuff into the fic, but there's only so much time and space I have for research...
One more detail: I originally planned to set this in our modern times, but I called one of my besties who went to Tisch and asked him if he'd be willing to tell me about his experience there. He replied, "Yeah, I can tell you about what it was like from '98 to '02." And suddenly that sounded like a really nice setting for the story I'd planned. It's been really fun to consider what's changed in terms of technology, and how it might impact their relationship. Landlines vs. cell phones, CDs (!), cabs vs. Uber. I'm sensing the nostalgia for Y2K and I hope that the vibes have come through.
Sorry that update is taking so long but February was a b*tch. I have plans to complete soon so that I can move on to another historical AU that I'm dreaming about.

Week 11: Explore!
"Is Shanghai fun?", my uncle had asked me in the first week during May. My first impression of Shanghai had been its sheer size, so big I didn't know how to start exploring. Now, with less than two weeks left here, my answer to that question is a confident YES! To recollect my memories of the fleeting moments, I dug into my photo album and saw familiar faces and recognizable landmarks belonging to the different cities I've traveled to. For this week's blog, I want to share some of my experiences here (and tempt you to come to China). Now let's get to it!
May
The first month was all about exploring Shanghai, before classes started to hit and the electric fan started to blow warm air. It was about overcoming unfamiliarity with a new environment and making new friends as walls came down, revealing lively personalities. There were times when conversations dropped, replaced with awkward silence. Later, I became comfortable with the group's silence at times like when we crammed and stressed over our approaching midterms, or when we're so tired we collapsed on the hotel's beds and napped the day away, or when everyone scrolled on their phones as we stood, squatted, and inched forward on the super long line for one short and bumpy ride. With the new friends I made here, and my cousin who's doing the same program, and my other uncle who was vacationing in China and joined me for a bit, I explored a lot of places and got to know them all better. I experienced the magical air of Shanghai Disney, witnessed the frantic bike rush after class, got good canteen food with my buddy and classmates, explored the other SJTU campus at XuHui district, and held a concert glow stick for the first time at a meetup with a Shanghainese friend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Between studying for classes and enjoying the summer, I have chosen my priority. I went from taking the ambitious 12 credits to doing the bare minimum 6 credits. My mindset changed as I realized I can take classes anywhere anytime, but I only plan to study abroad this one time in my undergrad years. I am not good at multitasking to handle both classes and traveling, so I made my choice. I'll have fun in China and lock in when I'm back in Ann Arbor. With my classes down to Calculus 3 and a Chinese culture class, I'm aiming to get A++ for both classes!
June
June was the rainy season. Shanghai became wet and humid, unfavorable weather conditions for biking, so I rode on cabs a lot. My traveling outside of Shanghai peaked this month, and my photo album overloaded from all the picture spamming during the weekend trips. I wrote three travel blogs during this time. Over the Dragon Boat Festival weekend, I traveled to Qingdao and Yantai and saw a memorable sunset over the bay. I came back on Monday and had the holiday food ZongZi (glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves that can have sweet red bean paste or salty pork belly for fillings) for dinner.
Scrolling down my June album as I write, on the following week, I took an hour long subway to Qipu Lu (七浦路) to shop for Qipao. I have something to share about the marketing and sales here. At one of the first stores we visited, we decided to look around more and compare our options before paying hundreds of RMB on a traditional Chinese dress. However, the owner was not chill about it and began to persuade us to buy the Qipao by offering more discounts. Despite our assurances that we would come back, she insisted we were her first customers and that it would bring bad luck for the day's business if we left without purchasing. Sellers can't force customers into buying, so she eventually had to see us go. That was my first time in Shanghai watching and experiencing such direct sales tactics. Anyways, we ended up getting our Qipaos at another store and dressed up for Suzhou :)
Later in June, I went to Hangzhou twice, once on a program trip to the water-town Wuzhen (乌镇), and the other time I visited the West Lake (西湖) with my roommate. Here are some pictures, some of which I'm stealing from my previous blogs.

July
July was when I brainstormed indoor activities to avoid the heat. I wanted the rain back. I would gladly welcome the dull cloudy sky, the humid weather, and even the puddle splashes that stained my shoes, anything but the glaring sun. Despite the heat, I traveled every weekend. In the following order, I went to Changzhou (常州), Changsha (长沙), Nanjing (南京) & Yangzhou (扬州), and Fuzhou (福州).
This is Changzhou, where I went up the tallest pagoda in the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Changsha really surprised me.
It's even more crowded than Shanghai and has a vibrant night life. We arrived in the morning and checked into a cute family room that has a rocking horse seat, mini teepee, and astronaut themed decorations on the wall. We napped for hours and came out at around 5pm to see the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Changsha is known for their good food. I missed their 果呀呀 fruit teas and 茶颜悦色 milk teas topped with whipping cream. I also had the authentic ChangSha stinky tofu, and it didn't smell as strong as the ones in other cities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We waited for the DuFu River Pavilion to light up at 7:30pm. It was built to remember the famous poet DuFu from the Tang dynasty, and here's a screenshot from the video as we counted down.
Tumblr media
We saw the gigantic sculpture of Chairman Mao below.
Tumblr media
3. Nanjing and Yangzhou

Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall and Museum
4. Fuzhou was to see family, bring luggage to make moving out easier, and rest at home.
Okay, that's all on traveling. I've been exploring China for almost three months now, and there are still so many places I want to visit. Seeing giant pandas before I leave is one of my wishes, and I'll be able to fulfill that soon at Chengdu next week!! I had hoped to give helpful tips for planning weekend trips and crafting itineraries, but my writing power is faltering, so I think I'll save them for another time :) 拜拜!

Pink Floyd made their Motor City debut in July of 1968 at the Grande Ballroom. They were initially booked to play one night, the 11th, but they stayed in town and opened for the Who on the 12th, played a set and then drove to Ann Arbor and played a set at the 5th Dimension. Syd Barrett had left the group in early '68. David Gilmour became the guitarist and would remain with the band throughout its run. This Grande Ballroom photograph of Pink Floyd features L-R keyboardist Richard Wright (seen between the Shure speaker cabs), bassist-vocalist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason, and the aforementioned David Gilmour playing the white Fender Strat. People often ask how the band's name came about...apparently Syd Barrett named Pink Floyd after two Blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

QUICK STATS
NAME: noel aubrey siemens
NICKNAMES: his last name is siemens – use your imagination.
BIRTHDAY: august 30, 1990
AGE: thirty-one
HOMETOWN: ann arbor, michigan
RELIGION: atheist
ETHNICITY: white
NATIONALITY: american
EDUCATION: bachelor’s in statistics
ORIENTATION: bisexual
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: eternally single
BRIEF OVERVIEW
owes his life to his maternal aunt, who in no small feat managed to convince noel’s mother that naming her son aubrey siemens would just be setting him up for a lifetime of failure (she made it his middle name instead).
the kids at his school had a field day with “no siemen,” regardless.
won the genetic lottery; noel inherited his father’s height and his mother’s neuroticism. which isn’t to say that he, like, blames her for his poor mental health? but if he had to wager a guess, he’d say about 80% of it is probably her fault.
his fixation with numbers and statistics sprung up early in his childhood – numbers are finite. numbers are predictable. you can count all the tiles on a bathroom floor but you can’t, say, know how likely you are to slip and crack your head open on them within the next five seconds at any given time.
noel’s mother was the opposite way. she dealt in possibilities, not absolutes: “you must wash your hands three times after coming into contact with someone, or you could catch hepatitis. don’t stand too close to the road, honey, you’ll get run over by a semi.” he learned that with every experience came a potential consequence: disease, injury, or worse.
needless to say, he wasn’t exactly a popular kid – in school or otherwise. strange name and towering stature aside, he was awkward. he didn’t know how to make small talk, so he seldom tried. and much of that carried over into adulthood, where noel traded shyness for reticence and a general aversion to human relationships with unfettered pessimism. because what are we, really, but a bunch of human-shaped dust bunnies on a floating rock in space?
eventually graduated from cornell university with his bachelor’s in statistical science, which he feels like a total asshole dropping casually into conversation, especially since he now works for a non-entity of a consulting firm in lower manhattan.
can typically be found haunting your local bodegas in search of lemonheads and feeding the stray cats that linger around his apartment complex. he’s definitely avoiding you, but he’s also not going to turn you away should you happen to approach him, you know?

Bucky leaned back against his truck, hands stuffed into the pockets of his jeans as he waited. The ground was littered with gold and red leaves, soggy after Hartford’s first major snowfall of the season. The air was crisp, the wind brisk, and he hunkered down a bit more in his sweater. He smiled when Steve emerged from the dorm, a bright pink gym bag slung over his shoulder. Darcy followed behind him, phone to her ear, hair threatening to break free from the beanie hat she’d pulled over the wild strands.
“Yes, Mom. I know. It’s fine, really. Jamie and Steve’s moms said they are more than happy to... Yeah, they got… Tell Dad he best be practicing because come Christmas, I’m going to kick his ass. Tell him to stop laughing, I can hear him. I know,” she waved at Bucky, face lighting with a smile, “I love you too, Mom. You guys have fun! Send me pictures. Okay. Okay. Okay. Love you more. Bye.”
“Parents flight take off okay?” Bucky asked, reaching for the rolling suitcase she was navigating on the sidewalk.
“Yep,” Darcy said with a nod, sighing when Bucky grabbed her suitcase, but knowing no amount of complaining would stop him from being his chivalrous self, “they should get to Michigan and check in sometime tonight.”
A conference in Ann Arbor wasn’t her dad’s ideal Thanksgiving, but getting a certification meant he was one step closer to being a manger, and as he’d been working toward it for years, it seemed wrong to worry about missing some turkey. “Oh,” Darcy said with an eyebrow raised, “apparently they sent your parents a tin of cookies?” She wasn’t sure whose parents had reached out to whom, but somehow they’d all connected.
It was only mildly concerning.
“I’ll be surprised if they’re still around when we get there,” Steve said, tossing Darcy’s pink bag in the back and grabbing her suitcase from Bucky. He laid them down in the bed with his and Bucky’s bags and covered them all with a tarp. “Clint tends to inhale cookies.”
“If not, we can always make more. I have the recipes memorized,” she said, smiling at Steve as he opened the door for her. She slid across the leather bench seat, dropping her purse at her feet as Steve climbed up next to her in the cab. Making sure everything in the back was secured, Bucky joined them, turning the key and hearing the truck roar to life.
“Are you ready for this?” Bucky asked, looking over at Darcy with raised eyebrows, a small glint of mischievousness in his eyes. “All of our families in one place?”

Listed: Atlas Maior
Tumblr media
Atlas Maior combines progressive jazz, Middle Eastern, Latin American and Indian music traditions in original songs that nod to tradition without being confined by it. Led by Joshua Thomson (alto saxophone, flutes) and Josh Peters (oud, lavta), the band will be releasing its next album, Hadal, in early 2023. Here is some of the music that inspires them.
Marcel Khalife—Taqasim
youtube
Khalife's song "Achikain" is currently featured during live Atlas Maior settings. Here Taqasim is a rare example of Marcel performing in a trio setting. Marcel Khalife would come and play Arab Fest in my hometown of Dearborn, MI. We were so fortunate to be able to host this Lebanese legend in our backyard.
Amir Elsaffar + Hyper
youtube
ElSaffar's work, approach, and sound has influenced the band for years. Fairly recently we've been in contact which has been incredible. He deserves every ounce of success that he receives with his phenomenal growing body of work. I also recommend the album Rivers of Sound.
Karim Ziad
youtube
The Maghreb region has influenced Atlas Maior stretching back to before the inception of the group. Here we represent this with Ifrikya. In 2014, our composition "iddaa!" was accepted as part of a live art sound installation within Moroccan taxi cabs for the Marrakech Biennale 5 Art Festival.
Ornette Coleman
youtube
Ornette! Ornette! Ornette! Our latest single Basalt is quite directly influenced by Ornette Coleman. Specifically ,the rubato melody we perform as the beginning melody. Also the fact that we have composed material incorporating two drum sets reminds me of his son Denardo Coleman.
Anour Brahem
youtube
This is such a beautiful album by one of the greats of the oud. Here, Brahem teams up with Holland and Dejohnette on a truly special performance. All of Brahem's albums are fantastic.
Tarek Yamani

Atlas Maior caught Yamani's La Merce 2019 Festival performance while we were also on tour in Spain. We were captivated by his approach to both Middle Eastern and Western jazz musical contexts. He is able to blend both approaches in such tasteful well thought out manner while demonstrating his command of both traditions.

Tablas (both Egyptian, and East Indian) have always been a component of Atlas Maior going back to the beginning of the group in 2009. Today we explore the instrument in several of our live settings as the Atlas Maior Tabla Trio, and in the larger quintet setting. Indian and Pakistani music traditions have always inspired us. This is a fine example of Middle Eastern oud, and East Indian tablas.
Ken Vandermark

There are so many incredible Vandermark records, this one is just great also because of Atlas Maior's deep love of both Funkadelic and Sun Ra. I love the way he interprets these works in a trio setting.
Omar Khorshid

A long-time influence on the band. Many never think of Khorshid's approach to the electric guitar. His story, music history, and body of work are legendary in the Middle East.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

Here I've selected a concert from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, whom I was into probably five years before forming Atlas Maior. I remember walking around Ann Arbor, MI during a blizzard listening to this album. The legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, definitely one of the world's most prolific voices in all of music history.

Absolutely heartbroken, as Low just announced that Mimi Parker, 55, passed away last night. She had been receiving treatment for ovarian cancer since late 2020, around the time that they were finishing up their latest album and planning multiple tours to promote.
This all happened so fast. I barely missed seeing them in Detroit this past April but didn’t think much of it, as I expected to see them twice this October on an international tour with Death Cab for Cutie. They had started pulling out of some dates in September so Mimi could receive more treatment, and then they canceled all remaining appearances a few weeks ago.
Reposting this song because it was an immediate favorite when I found the band, and it was one of my first Tracks of the Day over a decade ago (unfortunately the uploaded file no longer plays). I stood directly in front of Alan Sparhawk, Mimi’s husband and bandmate for ~30 years, when they played The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor in 2011. Just minutes earlier, I had found myself standing next to Mimi at the bar, as she was catching up with an old friend before their set, and she seemed so naturally calm and nice, as if she were perfectly in her element. And when the band took the stage, they immediately and completely entranced everyone in that cozy little space — 200-300 of us packed in on a cold Tuesday night. We were so silent during their set that you could hear coats rustling under people’s arms and dishes clanking in the dishwasher from the restaurant next door. It was the perfect ambiance and an unforgettable show.

Emily’s Pre-Prague World Tour
…And we’re off! My name is Emily Walker and I am a junior studying Computer Science through the CoE, studying in Prague this winter through Michigan’s brand new program: Computer Science and Tech Career Accelerator in Prague, Czech Republic.
I’m currently writing to you from Madrid, Spain, which is the last stop on my pre-trip world tour. I just spent the last 3 weeks living out of a carry-on and personal item exploring 6 countries before I head off to Praha.
Let’s rewind to the beginning of this new adventure. After hours of turning my suitcase into an intricate puzzle that only closes if you sit on it, filling my shoes with socks, and saying bye to my 4 dogs, I headed off to LAX for an 11 hour flight. For the entire car ride, my mind was racing with the anticipation of moving to Europe and traveling around with my family and friends. I was so anxious to leave, but the excitement to go abroad again and the fancy probiotic Ginger-Lemon Sparkling Olipop Tonic drink helped calm my nerves and my stomach.
I landed in Zurich and drove to Andermatt, Switzerland, for 3 days of skiing with my dad. The second I arrived, all of my nerves dissipated and I was filled with the adrenaline of skiing through the Swiss Alps. After 2 days of Off-Piste skiing with a full avalanche gear set-up, we headed over to Lech, Austria, for 2 more days of skiing there. We passed through Lichtenstien, the 2nd smallest country in Europe, for lunch, which landed at country #32 in my travel list.

These towns were the most beautiful and reminded me of a cute little snowglobe. Not only was the skiing amazing, but the cheese fondue had to be one of the best meals I’ve ever had… all 4 of the times I had it!

After 7 days in ski towns, we spent our last day on our father-daughter trip in Zurich. We did some great sightseeing, then I took a flight to London to spend the next few days with my friends who are studying abroad there. 3 of my roommates @ UMich are in London for the semester, and I haven’t seen them since we left Ann Arbor in December, so it was so great to see them. Studying abroad is crazy in that sense - I was with all of my friends in a foreign country!

We took a day trip to Oxford, and it reminded us of the British version of the Law Library in AA. While they were all in class, I spent my days wandering around London and meeting up with some other friends who live there full-time. My favorite day was going to Dishoom, an amazing Indian restaurant, followed by watching “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” the play.

After an amazing 5 days in London, the 4 of us headed to Copenhagen, Denmark, to visit our friend studying abroad there. I had never been to Copenhagen before, so this part of the trip was particularly exciting for me. We spent the cold Scandinavian days visiting the Copenhagen Contemporary museum and exploring the various neighborhoods, trying danish hotdogs from the best stand in Copenhagen and stopping inside coffee shops for some well needed Hygge-time (Hygge is Danish for describing a mood of coziness).
Tumblr media
I had the most amazing time in Copenhagen, but I was getting ready to be settled in Prague by the end. Seeing all of my friends getting accustomed to their lives abroad made me both eager to arrive but sad to end my amazing Pre-Prague trip. But don’t worry! There’s 1 more stop: Madrid!
After running into some friends at the Copenhagen airport on their way to Madrid too, we all hopped in a cab and I made it to my friend Tara’s apartment in Sol. This part of the trip has been filled with delicious food and quality down time with my friends from Michigan, which has been a nice contrast to the go-go-go of the last 3 weeks of my life. I was recently in Madrid, so I took my time here to prepare for my arrival in Prague while seeing a more local side of the city - spending time in my friend’s favorite cafes and restaurants and accompanying them on their day to day lives here. Some highlights have included food, food, and more food…

Now that my trip has finally come to an end, I am ready to embark on this next adventure in my time abroad - getting to know Prague and all it has to offer! I can’t wait to get into the swing of things and start classes, explore more food, and meet new friends both from Michigan and Prague!
Talk to you soon, but next time in Praha!!
