Make Love Your Goal
Because Christmas just doesn’t seem to be @devikafernando ‘s time of the year, here we are again with a third one-shot of Dev and Tom and their adventures on Christmas. Enjoy Christmas, the holidays, whatever you celebrate, or simply a few days off, if you don’t celebrate at all, and join Tom and Dev!
Make Love Your Goal
„I’m so sorry, Tom.“
Dev can hear Tom's sigh all the way from England. And it’s not because of the call, but because it’s so loud, it’d reach her little flat in her bed and breakfast without the help from her phone.
“Please, don’t say anything more.”
He sounds so defeated that Dev almost loses it herself. She’s already cried enough over this. But she can’t change it.
“Let me explain. Please.”
“What’s there to explain, Dev?” It’s less defeated and more angry. She needs to be careful now. She doesn’t want to fight. “Last year I understood it perfectly. And I think I made it very clear that I support you in every way that I can. Every way that you let me. Without asking even.”
He’s right. Of course he is. She had to cancel their first time hosting Christmas at his house. He left his family, and he flew out to help her when she had to work. She’s promised it’d be better this year.
And she’s made it almost all the way to Christmas. Again. But their cook had personal problems. He left. Again, they're almost fully booked – something she’s happy about as they’re finally looking forwards again, having more bookings as tourists start coming back to Ireland – and nobody’s there to care for the guests.
She's also explained this to Tom. Yesterday, shortly before he cut her off, told her she couldn’t be serious and then hung up. Only to call her minutes later to make sure he wasn’t dreaming.
“I know...”
“And then you tell me, you won’t be able to make it here. The second year in a row.”
“I know.”
“And I know about being busy. Hell, I know about not being able to make it. I've spent almost a year in a play. I just made it home from New York. I haven’t seen you in six months.”
“Tom, I know that. If you just let me...”
But he doesn’t just let her. Dev loves her boyfriend, she really does. She’s also really sorry. But damn, this stubborn ass can surely get on her nerves when he wants to. Yes, ‘when’.
“Do you even want to see me?”
“Do I what now? Of course, I do, you arse.”
“Well, then come and see me or just don’t. But that’ll be the last of it.”
And then he hangs up, leaving Dev staring at her phone.
***
Tom’s had days from hell. That what it feels like in the afternoon of the 25th December with nieces running through his backyard, his sisters chatting away in the kitchen and his mum shooting him looks from across the room.
Yes, he’s been grumpy all day. Ever since yesterday night actually. It’s not a long flight from Ireland. It’s not like he’s asking Dev to travel for twelve hours just to see him, right? Right.
He knows she’s incredible busy. He also knows that she didn’t just go and let a cook go just to anger him and leaving him miserable and alone on Christmas day. Well. Not entirely alone. But definitely miserable.
So what if he’s been sulking ever since this morning when his family arrived, reacting more than shocked when they learnt that Dev couldn’t make it, again? He’s got every right. He doesn’t really have a solution either. Or actually, he has. She can go ‘fuck it’, and come over anyway.
At least the turkey in the oven seems to be doing great.
***
Dev hasn't slept in – she checks her watch – 36 hours. She feels like she’s between some kind of floating and sleepwalking. Which isn’t the best when you arrive at an international airport, and still have to make your way all the way south to reach your boyfriend's country house. In one piece. That’d be great.
Even when she makes it on the train she’s afraid to fall asleep. What if she doesn’t wake up for her stop? Then she'd be tired and feeling very sorry for herself.
They told her to go. They, that are her brother and her sister-in-law. They told her to go to her boyfriend, make it right, maybe kick his arse for being mean, but then apologise, kiss and make up.
But she couldn’t in good conscious leave them just be. So, she made herself find a new cook to manage the kitchen. Maybe it’s a Christmas miracle, but after searching what seemed to be the entire island of Ireland, she found him in form of an online advertisement. Craig offered to prepare a Christmas meal for a family or group of friends in order to celebrate Christmas with them. Well. Family and group of friends almost fits for the bed and breakfast. A very large family and group of friends at least.
If this was a Hallmark movie, she'd be in love with the new, somewhat lonely cook now and make him stay to work for her forever. But it’s not a cheesy movie, so instead Dev’s overtired and on the way to her boyfriend. Which, ultimately, is better.
***
“Tom, could you get the door?”
It’s very hard not to roll his eyes. It’s his house. Of course he ‘could get the door’. He’s probably single now, but neither deaf nor unable to walk. He’s just preferred not to move. All day. Merry Christmas to him.
But his mum’s second shout of getting that door has him going. It’s only in the hallway that he asks himself, why there could be someone at his door. Sure, he has neighbours but they’re not so close that they just randomly come over on Christmas day to... yeah, to what? Bring Christmas pudding? And Tom swears to god, if the neighbours are at the door to complain about children – now with their parents – run around in the garden, making some noise, he going to kill someone. He’s just in the right mood.
Then he opens the door and almost closes it right after. Because he’s finally gone mad. He’s made it. Dev said she couldn’t come and celebrate Christmas with him and his family. And yet, someone who looks exactly like her is standing at his door.
He checks her over. If maybe it’s a brain tumour he at least wants to enjoy the images it creates. Her suitcase is next to her feet which are clad in her favourite and well trusted ankle boots. She’s wearing skinny jeans, a violet parka, a green scarf and a fitting beanie under which Tom can see her brown hair curling. She’s a bit pale – but beautiful – though, and the bags under her eyes are almost as big as the bag that’s slung over her right shoulder.
“What are you doing here?” he asks and then winces along with Dev. He didn’t want to voice it like that. Really. Instead, he wants to hug her, hold her in his arms, and never let go. Never again.
So, he does.
Dev only has enough time to drop her bag and prepare herself for impact, and then Tom pulls her close, cradling her in his arms.
“I’m so happy you’re here,” he mumbles into her neck, inhaling the scent of roses, peach, and some fragrance Tom can’t place except for the knowledge it’s smelling like her. “I’m so sorry I said those things to you. I don’t want this to be over. Not over something like this.”
“’m sorry,” he hears her mumble against his shoulder. “I should have made it immediately. Not cancel at all.”
“It's okay. You’re here now. Thank you for being here.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
And as Dev looks up and meets his eyes, and when then their lips finally meet as well, Tom knows that this must be his favourite Christmas ever. Maybe, just maybe, he thinks with the last two brain cells this kiss is leaving him with, she’ll also except the key to his house as a Christmas gift – as he’s planned from the beginning.

What Makes a Brogue a Brogue?
Tumblr media
You know what a brogue is: it’s that classic, slightly wingtip-looking lace-up shoe with perforations on the toe. It’s a shoe that turns up at the front just enough to be stylish. Brogues are crafted with fine leathers and time-honored techniques that ensure lasting comfort, durability, and style. A brogue is a shoe or boot with perforated holes – the broguing – cut into the leather upper. It’s not just for show, though – this distinctive design keeps your feet cool and comfortable on warmer days.
A History of Brogue Shoes-
Tumblr media
The brogue is one of the original perforated leather shoes, a style that has a long and unique history dating back hundreds of years, and is credited with being the first decorative shoe in the world. They were originally used in the United Kingdom and Ireland as utilitarian shoes to wear while attendees would tend to farm animals for work. Eventually the shoes grew so popular, they were then worn outside of farm life as a “fashionable” shoe all around Britain and Ireland. The style still retains its original design by being more heavily decorated on the right side of the shoe as that side was always shown in Western culture when one made a social bow or curtsy. Trading as far back as the 9th century B.C Roman merchants wore perforated sandals, and by the Middle Ages, hard leather boots were being sold with hundreds of holes punched on the upper part of it.
Types of Broguing-
Derby Brogue-
Tumblr media
Derby brogue Shoes with Open Lacing System- The Derby shoe is characterized by its open lacing system and the absence of an overlap, which means the top part of the shoe has a small hole punched on the upper part of it . It also is known for its distinctive perforations.
Full Brogue-
Tumblr media
A full brogue is also called a wingtip brogue because it has a toe cap that looks like a W, with wings that run along the side of the shoe, ending just before the ball of the foot. Designed with comfort in mind, the shoes feature a natural leather sole unit.
Ghillie brogue-
Gillies are tongueless shoes with a lacing system that is open. Laced around and up the ankle, this unique brogue has long laces that tie around the calf. A kilt is often worn with this traditional brogue shoe, which draws attention to the lacing.
Longwing brogue-
Tumblr media
The Longwing Brogue is a style icon, recognised by its distinctive hand welt, and considered a modern classic for the discerning gentleman. Crafted from one piece of leather it has a clean refined aesthetic. The heavy brogue punching creates additional styling while further contributing to the shoe’s durability. This style features punched holes on the sides and back as well as punched broguing along the toe and heel points.
Monk brogue-
Tumblr media
The shoe’s strap or buckle (also known as a monk strap shoes) secures it to the wearer. Monk brogues do not feature laces.
Oxford brogue-
Tumblr media
Round toe cap Oxford brogue shoes have holes punched on the surface, which is quite novel and special. It also brings you a traditional charm and mature personality.
Quarter brogue-
Tumblr media
Quarter brogues have perforations on the edges and a straight toe cap. The quarter brogue shoe is a classic two colour stitched suit made to a higher standard with premium Italian leather and super soft full-grain cow leather inside the shoe.
Semi brogue-
Tumblr media
Semi Brogue Shoes have a brogue pattern on one or two parts of the upper. Broguing is a decorative perforated design. These semi brogue shoes will look great with a pair of jeans, khakis, or even a suit.
You can shop the Barker collection online by colour to find all the styles of dress shoes available in black and/or brown.

FAB40s August theme: Bucket List inspired outfit
The Fab 40’s is a group of five fashion bloggers from around the globe. Each month we choose a different theme and invite a guest blogger who is also in their 40’s to join us. This group’s goal is to take on style trends and show how we each interpret and incorporate them into our own lives. With five widely varied views, you are certain to find something that speaks to you each month and encourages you to continue to have fun with fashion after the age of 40.
The Bloggers
Ada of Elegance and Mommyhood Daenel of Living Outside the Stacks Sheela of Sheela Writes Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge Suzy of Suzy Turner Books & Style
This month, the theme was to dress using inspiration from one of our bucket list countries. I knew almost straight away what country I would pick. Can you guess?
Tumblr media
No? No idea? Ok… here’s a clue…
Tumblr media
Yes, you’ve got it. Egypt! Egypt has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. In school, when I was a little girl, I fell in love with the ancient Egyptians and I sooo wanted to be Cleopatra lol. Then later, during my A level studies, I was reminded how much I loved all things Egyptian while reading Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra. And this year, we’ve been watching a lot of documentaries on the Gaia website, some of which talk about the ancient Egyptians and how incredible they really were. I still think they might have been some kind of alien race lol 😉
My bucket list
Therefore, Egypt seemed like the logical choice for my bucket list outfit. As keen travellers, we’ve actually already visited many of my other bucket list places like the US, Canada, Ireland, Scotland & Germany. Naturally, there are many other places on my bucket list that I could have been inspired by. Japan, for instance, but the Fab40s covered Japan’s Harajuku style a few months ago. Peru is another but I knew I had nothing in my wardrobe even remotely similar to the national Peruvian dress, which is so colourful!
Since starting my spiritual journey, I’ve realised I’d also like to add many of the sacred sites around the world (like Machu Picchu in Peru) to my bucket list. I haven’t put together a list yet but I plan to. We’ve already visited Stonehenge but it’s somewhere I’d love to return to, perhaps for summer solstice one of these years.
Black and gold
#gallery-0-7 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-7 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-7 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-7 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
But enough about that, let me tell you a little bit about the outfit. I chose black and gold because I could totally imagine Cleopatra wearing those colours, particularly a long black robe with lots of golden embellishments. As I didn’t quite have a robe as such, nor embellishments of her high standards, I settled for a long strapless dress from George at Asda (from 4 or 5 years ago) and a pair of black and gold sandals bought from a local shoe shop. I would have worn a gold belt had I had one, but I don’t so I settled with the little black ‘rope’ that came with the dress.
As for my gold jewellery, almost all of it was given to me by my wonderful mother-in-law. The only exception being the tiger bracelet which I inherited from my late stepmother-in-law. You see the little gold ‘bracelet’ that I’m wearing on my upper arm? That’s actually an ankle bracelet!
Gold Gel Polish
Almost forgot to mention the gel nail polish. I bought this one specifically for this month’s Fab40s. I knew I wanted to wear gold and, considering I’ve been doing my own gel nails this summer, I went online and bought this beautiful shade of gold from Mylee. Isn’t it gorgeous? I’m delighted with it. I also bought some really dark, witchy shades but I’ll talk about them in a future post.
#gallery-0-8 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-8 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-8 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-8 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
I had intended to have poker straight hair for this look, so I did use my hair straighteners beforehand, but the wind wouldn’t let me have the Egyptian look I’d planned lol. However, perhaps next week I might be able to create that look because I think I’m going to have a fringe (bangs) again. But I’m still undecided. I guess you’ll find out next week after I’ve visited my stylist lol!
Now, let’s see what bucket list countries the rest of the Fab40s gals chose…
Shelbee, Shelbee on the Edge
Tumblr media
I absolutely LOVE that Shelbee chose the UK for her bucket list. And that she was inspired by the punk subculture that was born in 1970’s London. She’s nailed it completely with her biker boots, fishnets and plaid. Freaking love this, Shelbee! Outfit Details: Tee Shirt, Duster, and Belt-Torrid Skirt and Gloves-Old Navy Skirt Extender-c/o Dresslily Tights-Target Boots and Jewelry-All old
Sheela, Sheela Goh
Tumblr media
Sheela has been inspired “by Brazil which, at this time of the year, is winter 🙂 hence the layers. The frills and the sleek leather evoke that sexy yet very womanly allure of their Winter street style.” And she is totally rocking it. Aren’t those books freaking gorgeous?
Daenel, Living Outside the Stacks
Sadly, Daenel is unable to join us this month on account of the terrible aftermath of Hurricane Laura. Sending hugs to you Daenel xx
Ada, Elegance & Mommyhood
Tumblr media
Our fabulous new member, Ada, is looking gorgeous in her Spain-inspired outfit. She loves the colours, food, drinks, flavours, music, cultures, dances and festivals among other things and I can totally get why she wants to visit. I live right next to Spain and don’t visit anywhere near enough. I really should change that! Outfit Details: Camisole & Skirt: Loft. Crossbody Bag: Rebecca Minkoff. Sunglasses: Fendi. Lipstick: NARS Audacious. Gladiator Sandals: Steve Madden.
And me…
Tumblr media
See you soon!
Love & Light
Suzy xx

Afternoon to you all and happy Sunday to you! I hope last week treated you well and that you are all ready for a new week ahead and that you are having an enjoyable relaxing Sunday if you are lucky enough to now be working today.
So we are in September which is terrifying because the year is just flying past at a record speed. Does anyone else feel like they haven’t done half the things that they planned to do this year and if you did it feels like you did it literally a year ago even though it was only a couple of months? So we are heading back into Autumn which I am kind of excited for because its that in-between phase where you can wear boots and coats but still wear t-shirts and and skirts without being too cold. A few things I love about Autumn wear are scarves, coats and boots so today Im sharing a few cool styles of boots that have been coming in lately. I basically live in boots all the time anyway so I really put them to work so I am always on the hunt for new, trendy and affordable pairs so here are a few that I have seen online from various stores!

https://www.missguided.eu/black-buckle-block-heel-pointed-ankle-boots-10144901
If you are not aware from previous posts I literally only wear pointed toe boots as I find they just look that bit better on me personally because I have a small foot (UK size 3) a rounded toe boot just looks stumpy on me but I do like the look of the laced pair from Newlook. I am on the look out for some good boots for when Winter actually hits that will keep me warm but are still trendy and they look like a good option because the sole looks sturdy and has a grip if its wetter which living in Ireland is a big possibility! I also love their off white stiletto pair which are available in the store I work in in only my size (which must be a sign to get them!) and they are very nice on and would go with a lot of things.
Also loving the tortoiseshell pair from ASOS by Raid because they are just so different and unique in pattern and would be so nice for Autumn due to the colouring without being the usual plain brown, black, green, burgundy Autumn colours.
So thats all from me today guys Im sure there will be many more Autumn / Winter pieces posts to come over the next few months so keep an eye out for them!
(p.s I bought the jumper in the photo which is also very nice on!)
Ever Yours
Lily

If you aren't concerned about buying counterfeit jerseys you have nothing to worry about cheap jerseys. They are not all counterfeit on ebay, but there might be a few sprinkled in here and there. The best way to avoid buying a counterfeit is by learning the ins and outs of the jersey you want to buy.

World Cup 2018: A bluffer
World Cup 2018: A bluffer
World Cup 2018: A bluffer
So, you’re not a die-hard football fan?
That’s fine! But if you don’t want to feel left out of the endless World Cup chat over the next few weeks, we’ve got just the thing for you.
BBC Sport have created a bluffer’s guide to each team at Russia 2018 to help you get through the next month and a bit.
There are even three levels of bluffery:
Mini bluff: This will help you learn a little about each team and their chances – perfect if you’ve drawn a team in the office sweepstake but know nothing about them.
Big bluff: Shock people into thinking you have the footballing brain of a statistician.
Mega bluff: Really go all out with these quirky facts. You will impress even the biggest football fan in your friendship circle.
You. Are. Welcome.
Argentina
Could this be Lionel Messi’s last chance to win the World Cup?
Mini bluff: “They aren’t the side they used to be – Lionel Messi dragged them through qualifying almost single-handedly.”
Big bluff: “They’ve dropped from first to fifth in the Fifa world rankings in the last year or so.”
Mega bluff: “Did you know midfielder Ever Banega was run over by his own car in 2012? He left the handbrake off at a petrol station, and the vehicle rolled back, breaking his ankle and leg.”
Australia
Tim Cahill, who played in the Premier League for Everton, is going for a record
Mini bluff: “They aren’t known for their possession football so there will be a huge emphasis on their counter-attack.”
Big bluff: “Tim Cahill has scored 45% of Australia’s World Cup goals and is aiming to join the likes of Pele and Miroslav Klose as the only men to score in four finals.”
Mega bluff: “Centre-back Trent Sainsbury plays for Chinese side Jiangsu Suning. He said he wanted to play in China to help pay for his parent’s mortgage.”
Belgium
The Belgian Red Devils flew on a personalised plan
Mini bluff: “Before every major tournament, the press like to declare one team ‘the dark horses’. This year, Belgium are the chosen ones.”
Big bluff: “Did you know they scored 43 goals in qualifying – a new joint European high.”
Mega bluff: “Eden Hazard’s mother Carine was a professional footballer in the Belgian First Division. She only stopped playing when she found out she was pregnant with Eden.”
Brazil
Souvenirs for all…
Mini bluff: “It’s not as much of a one-man-team as it was in 2014 – they’ve still got Neymar but they’ve also got Philippe Coutinho and Gabriel Jesus.”
Big bluff: “They could shock us all. The five-time winners conceded 14 goals in 2014 – their worst ever total at a World Cup.”
Mega bluff: “Interesting fact about Gabriel Jesus: he has a tattoo on his bicep of his mother Vera. She supervises his finances to ensure he stays grounded, and even vets his girlfriends. Don’t mess with Vera.”
Colombia
Awks. James Rodriguez recently split from the sister of team-mate David Ospina
Mini bluff: “Their games could be goal-fests – none of their 18 World Cup matches has ended goalless.”
Big bluff: “James Rodriguez scored six goals in Brazil in 2014 and has been playing well for Bayern Munich.”
Mega bluff: “This could be awkward. Goalkeeper David Ospina’s sister Daniela married team-mate James Rodriguez in 2011, but the couple have since split up.”
Costa Rica
“Maybe we will shave the ‘tache this time boss?”
Mini bluff: “Some may call it an ‘experienced’ squad – others could call it ‘ageing’. Seven of the 11 that played most often in Brazil four years ago are likely to start again this year.”
Big bluff: “Don’t forget Costa Rica have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Keylor Navas. He has just won his third successive Champions League title with Real Madrid.”
Mega bluff: “Head coach Oscar Ramirez promised to shave off his hair if Costa Rica qualified for Russia. Navas took great pleasure in taking the clippers to his boss’ head.”
Croatia
Ivan Rakitic got the girl in the end
Mini bluff: “They have lost their opening game at their past three World Cups and haven’t made it past the group stage at any of them.”
Big bluff: “Playmakers Ivan Rakitic and Luka Modric were in fine form this season for Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.”
Mega bluff: “Did you know that when Rakitic moved to Seville, he married the first woman to serve him coffee? He met Raquel in the club hotel the night before his medical but it took three months before she agreed to go out with him.”
Denmark
Denmark boss Age Hareide celebrated with his team when they qualified for Russia
Mini bluff: “The Danes were unbeaten in their final nine qualifiers. They could do all right…”
Big bluff: “Head coach Age Hareide is friends with Ireland boss Martin O’Neill and rented a house from him whilst playing for Norwich.”
Mega bluff: “More than 11,000 people have signed an online petition to Fifa asking them to delay the World Cup until Nicklas Bendtner is fit.”
Egypt
An Egyptian icon – Mo Salah
Mini bluff: “The team, at their first World Cup in 28 years, is set up to get Mo Salah on the ball as much as possible – think Gareth Bale and Wales at Euro 2016.”
Big bluff: “Brilliantly, they are nicknamed The Pharaohs. If they manage to progress, they could face Spain in the last 16, setting up a potential rematch between Salah and the man who put his World Cup in jeopardy -Spanish captain Sergio Ramos.”
Mega bluff: “Mo Salah’s boots are on display at the British museum following his record-breaking season for Liverpool. The museum say the boots tell a story of a modern Egyptian icon.”
England
“Gary! You’re meant to be the grown up on this team…”
Mini bluff: “It’s a young squad – Gary Cahill is the only player holding more than 40 caps. But they seem excited to get out there and play.”
Big bluff: “Gareth Southgate helped England cruise through qualifying with the joint-best defensive record in Europe.”
Mega bluff: “Midfielder Fabian Delph’s wife Natalie is due to give birth just two days after the final group game against Belgium.”
France
Can Deschamps get his hands on the trophy again?
Mini bluff: “20 years after winning it as a player, Didier Deschamps is looking to lift the World Cup trophy as France’s head coach. It’s his best chance with this squad.”
Big bluff: “Kylian Mbappe is still only 19 which makes him the first player born after the 1998 World Cup to represent France. Feel old?”
Mega bluff: “Guess what! Defender Adil Rami is going out with former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson. She has publically thanked him for helping her through the menopause but she says they wish to keep their relationship private.”
Germany
Hummels is from a sporty family…
Mini bluff: “Germany registered a 100% record of 10 wins from 10 in qualifying. Only Spain have done that before in European history and they went on to lift the trophy.”
Big bluff: “Seven of their 10 wins in qualifying were by three goals or more and, at the other end, they only conceded four times.”
Mega bluff: “Great fact: defender Mats Hummels’ mother, Ulla Holthoff, is a sports journalist and was the first woman to commentate on a football match on German television.”
Iceland
HUH!
Mini bluff: “Iceland are the smallest nation to ever grace the World Cup stage.”
Big bluff: “World Cup first timers rarely do well and if Gylfi Sigurdsson isn’t fit to play, then Icelandic hopes could swiftly melt away – but we all saw what happened at the Euros…”
Mega-bluff: “Head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson is also a qualified dentist.”
Iran
The first thing Amiri learned in his Masters degree? How to spin a ball on his finger…
Mini bluff: “Iran were the second country behind Brazil to secure their place at the tournament.”
Big bluff: “Iran’s head coach Carlos Queiroz will face his home nation and former side Portugal in the group stage. He was sacked as the national boss in 2010 and has locked horns with Cristiano Ronaldo on a number of occasions.”
Mega-bluff: “Striker Vahid Amiri has a Master’s degree in Physical Education.”
Japan
Such a great idea from Japan’s fans!
Mini bluff: “They’ve not had the smoothest qualifying or preparation, having just sacked their manager, and many of their top players are possibly past their best.”
Big bluff: “A survey in May revealed almost 90% of Japan fans don’t expect the side to get out of their group. Ouch.”
Mega bluff: “This is brilliant: Japan’s fans are renowned for cleaning up litter after games – something first seen on their World Cup debut in 1998.”
Mexico
Giovani Dos Santos: “Overrated…”
Mini bluff: “It’s an experienced squad. The core of the team has been together since youth level and contains 14 players with more than 50 caps and a total in excess of 1,400.”
Big bluff: “They don’t lose often under coach Juan Carlos Osorio but, when they do, they tend to lose big – their worst was 7-0 to Chile in 2015.”
Mega bluff: “ESPN conducted a poll with 104 MLS players and they voted Mexico midfielder Giovani Dos Santos the most overrated player in the league.”
Morocco
“How I scare dogs away now…”
Mini bluff: “In their first World Cup in 20 years, it is just bad luck they’ve ended up in a group with Spain and Portugal, but with their defensive solidity, they may be hard to break down.”
Big bluff: “Fitness could play a part for the majority of their players as Ramadan ends the day before their opening game and many will have been fasting for a month.”
Mega bluff: “Did you know midfielder Faycal Fajr is scared of dogs after breaking his leg when jumping six metres to avoid a pit-bull terrier.”
Nigeria
BEST. KIT. EVER.
Mini bluff: “They will win best kit if nothing else!”
Big bluff: “Did you know this is the fifth time Nigeria have been drawn in the same group as Argentina in just six appearances at the World Cup.”
Mega bluff: “John Obi Mikel’s wife is Russian.”
Panama
For the ‘Gram…
Mini bluff: “The country’s president declared a national holiday when Panama secured their place at an historic first World Cup finals.”
Big bluff: “Defender Roman Torres secured ‘national hero’ status when he scored the goal against Costa Rica that secured qualification, and now has a World Cup tattoo on his calf.”
Mega bluff: “If you fancy a read, goalkeeper Jaime Penedo has just released his autography entitled Nunca te Rindas, which translates to ‘Never Give Up.'”
Peru
Christian Ramos – one of the “world’s best-looking footballers”
Mini bluff: “This is Peru’s first appearance at the World Cup in 36 years.”
Big bluff: “Demand for Panini stickers in Peru has led to fights in shops and a mayoral candidate offering freebies in return for votes!”
Mega bluff: “Defender Christian Ramos was selected as one of the world’s best-looking footballers by a major online media company in December, alongside the likes of Colombian Radamel Falcao and ex-England midfielder Michael Carrick.”
Poland
“Everyone say ‘Gladiator'”
Mini bluff: “They may have won eight out of nine qualifiers but only kept two clean sheets along the way.”
Big bluff: “Captain Robert Lewandowski needs to continue his form from the Bundesliga where he’s just won the golden boot.”
Mega bluff: “Poland have fans in Hollywood! They were adopted by Russell Crowe during Euro 2016, who often tweeted his support.”
Portugal
“Minimum number of goals I want to score per game…”
Mini bluff: “The reigning European champions will probably stick to the game plan – give it to Cristiano Ronaldo and hope for the best.”
Big bluff: “Ronaldo netted 15 goals in qualifying but has a point to prove with just three goals in 13 World Cup appearances to date.”
Mega bluff: “Don’t expect thrillers from Portugal – the manager Fernando Santos’ mantra is to win first and entertain second.”
Russia
“Are we doing this yoga right?”
Mini bluff: “If the Russians want to satisfy the home supporters and progress further than the group stage, Fedor Smolov needs to be at his best.”
Big bluff: “The instinctive striker has scored seven goals in his last 15 games.”
Mega bluff: “A modern-day love story: centre-back Vladimir Granat says he met his wife, a doctor, on the subway in Moscow when he gave up his seat for her. He plucked up the courage to ask her for her phone number but then realised he didn’t have his mobile with him so had to memorise all 11 digits in order to call her and ask her for a date.”
Saudi Arabia
Yahya Al-Shehri is only 5ft 3in. Can’t wait for the camera to pan along the team during the national anthems…
Mini bluff: “It’s not been the best build-up for Saudi Arabia – they’ve had three different managers in three months.”
Big bluff: “One of their star attacking midfielders Yahya Al-Shehri is only 5ft 3in – sure we will see him whizzing around the pitch.”
Mega bluff: “Yahya Al-Shehri was the cover star of the Middle East version of Fifa 16 alongside Argentina’s Lionel Messi.”
Senegal
Ohhh Mane Mane…
Mini bluff: “They’ve got plenty of pace out there – Sadio Mane will surely be Senegal’s most likely match winner.”
Big bluff: “Senegal’s many Muslim players, including Sadio Mane, did not observe Ramadan.”
Mega bluff: “France head coach Didier Deschamps had an awkward moment when he told TV journalists he was monitoring France-born Kalidou Koulibaly for a place in his side – the player had earned five caps for Senegal already.”
Serbia
“Oooo I shouldn’t have said that…”
Mini bluff: “Corners should be interesting for the Serbs – they were the tallest side in qualification, with an average height of 1.85m (6ft 1ins).”
Big bluff: “Coach Mladen Krstajic announced his preliminary 27-man squad in a tent outside a petrol station in Belgrade. He has never managed a competitive game.”
Mega bluff: “Goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic once said he wouldn’t join Partizan Belgrade for all the money in this world. He said that when you hate something, it’s really that simple. He’s since played for them twice.”
South Korea
Son Heung-min is the big name in the South Korean side…
Mini bluff: “They are widely available at 500-1 to win the World Cup – worth 50p? Maybe not. Apart from Tottenham’s Son Heung-min the squad lacks sparkle.”
Big bluff: “South Korea defeated Spain in their only World Cup shootout to date when they were co-hosts in 2002.”
Mega bluff: “Defender Kim Min-woo is one of the three members of the South Korean squad who are currently carrying out national service.”
Spain
Oh you prankster, you…
Mini bluff: “Brave or stupid? Spain sacked their head coach Julen Lopetegui two days before their opening World Cup match with Portugal because he agreed to take the Real Madrid job.”
Big bluff: “They are going to be hard to beat – they qualified without losing a game. However, they may be tired – their squad have played more minutes of football this season than any other World Cup side.”
Mega bluff: “There’s always a team prankster – Diego Costa has been known to put salt in the coffee of teammates!”
Sweden
Sweden’s Lustig caused a bit of a stir in the Old Firm derby
Mini bluff: “They’ve got Germany in their group so will probably have to battle it out for second place with Mexico and South Korea.”
Big bluff: “They ARE in pretty good form – they beat France in qualifying and sent Italy packing in the play-offs. Don’t forget, Zlatan’s not there…”
Mega bluff: “Celtic defender Mikael Lustig caused a bit of a stir in the Old Firm derby in April for stealing a policeman’s hat while celebrating taking a 3-0 lead over their arch-rivals Rangers”.
Switzerland
“They double up as oven gloves don’t you know…”
Mini bluff: “Switzerland are being thrown in at the deep end – they face Brazil in their opening game.”
Big bluff: “The squad contains three members of Switzerland’s Under-17 World Cup winning side from 2009 including Arsenals’s Granit Xhaka.”
Mega bluff: “Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is a renowned cook and has his own culinary blog. He spent three years devising it and manages everything himself: recipe ideas, making dishes and even taking the photos.”
Tunisia
“Me? A poser? How very dare you?”
Mini bluff: “They are without their star player Youssef Msakni who had a season-ending cruciate ligament injury. Their coach has likened it to Argentina being without Lionel Messi.
Big bluff: “Tunisia face England in their World Cup opener. They keep the ball well and are defensively solid – a combination England have struggled with before.”
Mega bluff: “Yohan Benalouane is known as a sharp dresser…”
Uruguay
“What have I done now?!”
Mini bluff: “Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani rarely miss a friendly, let alone a chance at goal.”
Big bluff: “Suarez is yet to complete a World Cup without being banned.”
Mega bluff: “Midfielder Giorgian De Arrascaeta is named after a horse that his father never lost on. His father later became a baker.”
