edriss judges marco as too sweet and trusting. edriss fakes eva's death. eva's death turns marco hard and cynical. marco's cynical nature gives him the strength to orchestrate edriss's downfall. it all comes back around, doesn't it?

Yikes! That's so true. Cannot believe I didn't notice...
Just finished reading Animorphs #49: The Diversion where Tobias finds out that his mom is still alive and in danger.
It's super stressful because Applegate would murder that poor kids mom right in front of him just to make some kind of point.
But also I think it's interesting to see how the other parents react to finding out about everything: Cassie's parents are instantly compassionate, they hug her, tell her it's going to be okay. It's no wonder Cassie is who she is.
Rachel's mom tries to fight a bear (Rachel) with a spice rack. Very genetics. Much lineage.
Jake's parents are already controllers. He can't save them. It makes sense that he doesn't get to have his parents with him, he hasn't been a child for a long time.

i don't think i realised the real horror of marco animorphs' mother until i reread it as an adult
like, it's not that his mom was dead. it's not that she was a controller
it's that he has to experience the entirely unique grief of knowing that his mother was taken long before he thought he lost her, and he didn't even notice

animorphs update i finished visser last night and just. man. when i started the series marco was probably my least favorite animorph but as the series goes on he has become so so interesting to me... the way that even jake looks to him in difficult situation, the way they all know marco will make the most logical call, even when it hurts him, the way there's not a single moment of doubt in eva's mind that marco will kill her, if it comes down to it. insane stuff. this kid is 13

no but we actually don’t talk enough about how smart chrom is. in the chapter 13 cutscene with lucina he pieces together the fact that she’s his daughter from the future himself, based on her brand, her identical sword, and her claim that she’d seen the future, and recognizes instantly that if she’s here, the future him must have failed her in some way. at the very least he’s emotionally intelligent enough to know that she’s upset and that confusion is the last thing she needs from him right then! chrom cares deeply about his family and can be impulsive when their safety is at risk, but he is far from stupid

When I told myself last week, "Hey, what if I wrote an Edriss/Eva fic?" (in response to @thelesbianthespianposts ’s post), I had no idea what a NIGHTMARE it was going to turn into…
Honestly, no matter how I approach the problem, I just can’t seem to pin down the dynamic of the relationship between Edriss and Eva. The information provided in Visser is too fragmented (and I’ll admit, I’ve never read #50, #51, or #52, so I don’t know if we get any insight into Eva’s personality in those books).
At first glance, you might think their relationship is one of contempt/hatred (contempt on Edriss’s side, hatred on Eva’s). But when you dig a little deeper, you quickly realize that’s not the case. There’s clearly "something else" going on.
Edriss can’t feel only contempt or indifference toward Eva. She went to great lengths to hide from Eva, for years, the fact that she had children. By her own admission, she watched them grow up through the eyes of other hosts. Hosts that, to her, were literally just disposable bodies, and whose opinions meant nothing. But with Eva, it’s different. Edriss outright admits that she couldn’t bear for Eva to know.
And yet, I could not let my host see that I was a mother, too. I could stand her hatred. I could not stand the insinuating pity, the appeals to a shared love.
What Edriss confesses here is that she’s afraid of Eva’s judgment. By extension, that means Eva’s opinion matters to her.
As for Eva, she didn’t hesitate to help Edriss on multiple occasions, from the moment she told her, "<I’ll help, Yeerk, but tell me the truth!>" to the point where she agreed to become her host again rather than escaping with Marco and the Animorphs. Sure, the fate of humanity was on the line at that moment. But shortly before the verdict, Eva says something I find very telling about her state of mind:
<I shouldn’t have helped you,> she said. <Even if it did lead to open war, I shouldn’t have helped you. You filthy, evil thing. I thought I’d found something decent inside you. I thought you were a mother, too.>
From this, I conclude that Eva clearly has some empathy for Edriss. Perhaps she even felt it from the beginning, before she knew about the children. Empathy doesn’t preclude a certain form of hatred.
But this is where I get stuck, because I can’t wrap my head around what Edriss and Eva’s relationship could have been like BEFORE all of that. What were their interactions like in the early days, and could those interactions have evolved into what we see in Visser? It’s not a simple question, because I think an important piece of the puzzle is missing: Eva’s personality.
Anyway. All this to say I’m racking my brain trying to piece it all together. Honestly, I don’t know if I’ll ever manage to finish this fic (which was supposed to be a one-shot and is already at 10K words). But hey, I do love a good challenge!

I was just thinking about how similar two characters I really like are. It’s a wild comparison, I know, but wow, Marco from Animorphs and Carol Peletier (TWD) are like two peas in a pod.
“People don’t understand the word ruthless. They think it means ‘mean.’ It’s not about being mean. It’s about seeing the bright, clear line that leads from A to B. The line that goes from motive to means. Beginning to end. It’s about seeing that bright, clear line and not caring about anything but the beautiful fact that you can see the solution. Not caring about anything else but the perfection of it.”
Take that quote from Marco and tell me it’s not Carol.

Big fan of the trope you've made of an Ani-mom adopting Every Host On Earth. First Eva, now Naomi.
Love what you're doing with the Yeerks Drop Dead AU!
Thank you! I've always loved the AniPTA (the parents, Chapman, Nora, Mr. Tidwell) because they all feel like fleshed-out characters despite having such minor roles.
But yes, Naomi and Eva are two of my favorites for both being a) good moms who are b) smart as hell and c) ice-cold ruthless as needed. That's not a combination you see much in fiction, even these days. I don't think either of those two would offer you a sticker if you were feeling down, but either one would carry you up a mountain every day for the rest of your life if that's what it took to get you water.
