Animorphs #2: The Visitor thoughts (pt. 3):
Love how quickly Rachel and Jake jump to Tobias's defense when Marco makes a rude joke about eating rodents. You tell him, kids!
This team needs an Ax. Cassie doesn't know how many morphs a person can acquire before hitting a limit? Rachel isn't sure it's possible to morph twice in one night? This team needs an Ax.
"'Sometimes when I'm feeling depressed, I really wish I could just morph.'" — Jake, p. 71. Aw, kid. Kid. You'll get your wish 52 books from now, whether you like it or not.
Related to the Berensons talking on the bus about how much they hate small morphs and love big ones: is this when Jake's moment of "morphing to tiger and running around on people's roofs" (#21, p. 40) occurs in-story? This is where Jake talks about having dreams of "Stalking through a dark forest at night. Hunting something" (he hasn't figured out who the "something" is yet 😭) and always wanting to go back to tiger morph (p. 70).
"[Fluffer] was trying to communicate was 'Don't mess with me. You may be bigger than me, you may scare me, you may make me run away, but if I have to I am ready to fight'" (p. 82). This is my first time reading #2 since getting cats, and this is 100% accurate. I keep explaining to Chaos that she can inflate herself to look scary or she can hide under the coffee table, but that both at once is counterproductive. So far she hasn't taken my advice.

What was an alien species mentioned in the Animorphs that you wanted to see explored more?
i honestly wanted to know more about the garatron, since basically all we get is "yeah they're like andalites but faster and pointier. and also the yeerks have one of them" like okay, man, whatever, what's their society like? how convergent with andalites is their evolution, yk? are they bugs? are they ungulates? are they herbivores, even? how do they eat? what do they eat??? whats the garatron-controller like when he's not infested? you can't just drop this description on my head and then NEVER MENTION THEM AGAIN
Tumblr media
pulled taffy, dude? like, what's going on with their physiology? partially it has to do with rachel being the narrator, and she's one of the least objective writers of the main six, next to marco, who is responsible for calling andalites "horses with arms sticking out of their necks", where every other character describes them as centaurs.
i went through the weakness again to see if there was much else to work with, and no, all we get is "they're fast enough to run on water", "they're not as fast as a striking snake", and "the yeerks may or may not continue infesting them" GET real. i wanna know if they run on water regularly on their home planet. is their planet's surface made out of quicksand or goo or something that you can't stand still on for fear of becoming Eaten By It? get goofy! get weird! but no

i have other gripes with this book but i would have to actually do a reread to put them to words

animorphs is fun from a "how could characters from other series deal with this" perspective because taking out the primary big bad (visser 3) is... not very helpful, actually?
like, visser 3 sucks at his job. he is terrible at leading a stealth operation, kills his subordinates when he's upset, and refuses to consider any possibilities other than what he's already decided is true. like, to be clear, none of this stops him from being a powerful antagonist - he has a whole military, and the animorphs are teenagers. it's just that if he was killed or otherwise removed from power, his replacement would be worse

This is a WIP for an Animorphs animatic that I've been working on for a really long time. It's based on the events of book 1. idk if I will finish it tbh burnout hitting hard.

How would things change if the time limits switched? Yeerks need kadrona every two hours (so way more portable generators or have them installed in yeerk run building bathrooms maybe? ) But the Animorphs can stay in morph for up to three days (way more surveillance opportunities/longer battles...)
I think that in a world where yeerks need kandrona every two hours, the invasion can't happen like in canon. We know a kandrona generator is "the size of a small car" and that yeerk pools don't work without it (#7). The yeerks might have to take a few decades and improve kandrona technology (i.e. #41) and then invade Earth, because an invasion would be too risky without that tech.
That said, the yeerks are fleeing the andalites as much as they are colonizing planets — the andalites control their homeworld, part of why they're stealing everyone else's. So maybe the yeerks try to make do, for lack of time. Probably they'd equip humans with thermoses of kandrona à la AniTV, and then help controllers create excuses to slip out every two hours. The thermoses might have to be refilled often, but there's a system for that in canon.
However, as anyone who's ever raised an infant can tell you, humans do not function well if their sleep is constantly interrupted every two hours. So lots of tired/confused controllers. And all kinds of other issues — work shifts with an "on" component, long tests, driving really far, needing a security team 24/7, being in hospital, etc. It'd preclude taking most important people as hosts, including anyone who regularly flies on airplanes. Animorphs can go for weeks without morphing, and can pop briefly out of morph in a pinch (even underwater and in the yeerk pool as needed). Yeerks literally die without kandrona, and they can't leave their hosts unattended for even a second; Mr. Pardue gets like 10 seconds of freedom in #8 makes a huge mess.
Ergo, I don't think they could pull off an invasion. There are too many humans with too much weaponry to launch an open attack from Day 1, but a quiet attack won't be able to get those with social power. And it'd run up against a thousand instances of (for instance) Jean and Steve taking Tom to deprogramming therapy because he hasn't been sleeping and has been carrying a thermos everywhere for weeks so clearly SOMETHING is wrong. So the yeerks are already quite underpowered, before we touch the issue of the andalites being wildly overpowered in this universe.

Chapman just sitting in absolute silence when he's not actively doing something like contacting Visser Three is eerie enough from Rachel's perspective but...
like, Yeerks probably get bored and fidget too. He's probably not just sitting in silence.
Iniss Two-Two-Six and the human Chapman are probably chatting.

I am Tobias. I'm a normal kid, I guess. Or used to be. - #3: The Encounter, Page 1
My name is Tobias, and I am human. Partly. Most of my mind is human. At least I think it is. - #13: The Change, Page 1
I am not human. I was human once. I was born a human. There are human characteristics within me. And I can become a human for two hours at a time. But I am not human. - #23: The Pretender, Page 1

Animorphs Reread- The Visitor (pt 1)
Here we go y'all! It's time for my girl! Let's get into part one of The Visitor.
She still feels like a normal kid? That's cute.
"I don't usually turn down a challenge" that's how she starts. She's brave. She stands up when people challenge her. These are good qualities to have. Especially for a girl in the 90s (or now still, if we're being honest). It was the war that exacerbated these qualities. Who would she be if she had the chance to grow up normally? A human rights activist? A politician? Sorry, I'm getting emotional.
Re: the creeps shooting at birds- nvm. maybe she'd become an ecoterrorist.
"Four pairs of shoes for the five of us" - oh she's obsessed this early?
"eyes that seemed hurt and tender and hopeful all at once" -oh she's OBSESSED this early.
It's easy to forget that Rachel had normal insecurities. She was in gymnastics because she felt clumsy. She thought she was too tall to be any good at it. Like she knows that people think she's pretty and she knows she's brave. But she's still a middle schooler.
The kids deciding that roaches are too gross to morph and also possibly useless for spy work is hilarious. But the fact that they ask out loud can cockroaches see and hear well, and then all look at Cassie is Sending Me. And Cassie immediately asks what the hell they're on? Spell it out for them girl. You're a middle schooler who works with injured animals, not google.
The way Rachel describes the picture of herself and Cassie riding horses is interesting. She admires Cassie for being good at what she's good at. She knows that Cassie is a natural with animals and great peace keeper, and she values these qualities. And she knows that other people think of her as pretty and fashionable, but also tells us that she's clumsy and looks like a dork when trying to ride a horse. Even before becoming an Animorph, Rachel values Cassie's skills and does not value her own.
I know she has a valid reason, but Melissa is really giving typical teen angst.
Chapman is just sitting silently in the living room? Doing nothing? Oh he and the yeerk are definitely chit chatting.
