what would be your top 5 idol anime reccs to someone who wants to get into the genre? :3

Oh man that's a tough question.... I will answer this but here are some things I feel like you should be aware of:

A lot of these franchises have games that go along with them, whenever possible I would reccomend playing both so I am including a 'game review' as well

A lot of these franchises have many series associated with them. I will be reccomending series from the franchises I know.

Anime bullshit (ie fatphobia, sexulizing minors, ect) are sadly quite common in this genre, especially in earlier games/anime series. I will be giving an anime bullshit warning on each franchises and series. If you need any specific clarity on these warnings feel free to send another ask.

Uh. Most of these are really 'basic' series/franchises. I'm a fake idol fan < Gets fixated on the same series and refuses to branch out

Without further delay....

Love Live

You all probably saw this coming given my icon but. Anyway. It's the franchise that got me into anime idols.

Series in order:

Love Live School Idol Project: This sets out the plot of the rest of the series after this, so I would reccomend seeing this series

Love Live Sunshine: The second part of the series I would also reccomend this.

Love Live Nijigasaki: The third part of the series but is divided from the other two so you can watch this without seeing the others. I'm reccomending this for Lanzhu in the second series.

Love Live Superstar: The fourth part, again you don't have to watch the other three but it does have Easter eggs from the others. I havent finished this series but it's cute.

Anime BS:

School idol project: Sexulization of minors, a whole episode dedicated to fatphobia, a character that gropes the others without consent

Sunshine: Sexulization of minors (to a much lesser extent)

Nijigasaki: None I can think of.

Superstar: None I can think of.

The games had some cards that aren't ideal

My reccomendations:

My favorite series (Sunshine) requires you to see series one, and while neither of them are perfect I really like the character Yohane.

I also really really love Lanzhu (Nijigasaki) but she's only in season two and the first movie.

Other series / Spin offs

Love Live bluebird- This has just been announced but is supposed to be a 'edgier' love live. We shall see how it goes.

Yohane in the parhelion - A spin off of Sunshine set in a fantasy world (I haven't seen it)

A live action show has also aired.

Mygo! / Ave Mujica

Avemygo is part of another franchise listed here (bandori) but I have to reccomend these as being completely seperate from the main series.

Series in order:

MyGo! - The series that starts the journey of healing and sets the scene for Ave Mujica.

Ave Mujica - The continuation and exploration into much deeper problems

Anime BS

MyGo! - Suicide

Why I am reccomending this:

Ave Mujica - Alcoholism and incest

These series are like nothing I've seen done in the idol/band anime universe. They're a lot gritter than other anime and have so much more drama. They're either going to be easy to get into or will ruin the genera for you.

Also as a side note it does an amazing job of representing DID and it has yuri.

Games

Currently MyGo! Is the only one of the two bands that is being used in the game.

Other series / Spin offs

A third season has been announced for these two animes.

Ave mujica is also getting a synthv voicebank called AVER.

D4DJ

D4DJ yuri I mean groovy mix is a series about DJ's rather than idols.

Series in order:

Anime BS:

Sexulization of characters (thankfully most of the ones are the adults in the series)

Some of the cards are a bit dodgy

Suicide, unhealthy relationships and abuse for one unit in particular, and one of the other characters uses 'sugar' as means of a high.

Why I am reccomending this:

Confession time: I have not seen any of the anime. This is based purely off the game.

The game is insane. It started off as a regular music anime gacha game, then went slightly off the rails in the best way.

It has a canon lesbian couple who have kissed in their stories and a few other heavily queer coded characters.

Games

D4DJ groovy Mix- I think this game is great. It has an unlimited auto function. It has lesbians. What more could you ask for?

Bandori

Bandori is part of another franchise listed here (Ave Mujica and MyGo!) but I have to reccomend these as being completely seperate from that series.

Series in order:

BanG Dream! - There is three seasons to this. I cant remember them well, they were a bit like a fever dream

Anime BS:

I don't remember the anime too well, but I'm pretty sure PICO had a fatphobic episode?

Also some of the games cards are a bit dodgy.

Why I am reccomending this

Bandori is a classic, although I would say to play the games rather than watch the anime, it's worth a shot if you'd prefer bands to idols

Games

Bandori has one game: Band dream girls band party! Sadly I feel like it has gotten more forgettable in recent years due to other popular games having a better interface (enstars as an exaple)

Other series / Spin offs

BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!☆PICO - I do remember this, also a fever dream but with chibis, I would reccomend having basic knowledge of the characters before watching it.

Other series:

22/7- Another gritter anime idol series, I haven't finished it as of now.

Enstars- An mostly male idol franchise. There is currently a boycott against it which is why I can't reccomend it.

Bocchi the Rock- I haven't seen it but everyone says it's good

Girls band cry- On my to watch list

Idoly pride- I haven't seen this

Idolmaster- The only reason I'm not reccomending this is because it has over 300 idols and several series/branches. Its intimidating as hell (even for me).

Milgram- This isn't an idol series at all. But please watch milgram. I am holding you at gunpoint to watch it.
