Have you ever noticed this green-haired player character in early promotional materials for Animal Forest // Dobutsu no Mori? She’s even included in early guidebooks!
It seems as though this variant’s hair color was changed shortly before release, likely because it didn’t stand out against the grass.

We’ve got this in our collection! Such a fun find.
If you want to check out the software, you can find it here on Archive.org!
A bonus CD-ROM for Windows and Mac that was included in the official Japanese player’s guide for Doubutsu no Mori+ (Animal Crossing) on GameCube. It includes a clock application and Animal Crossing-themed desktop icons. There is another application that copies the clock executable and the icons to a folder of the user’s choice.
NOTE: This CD-ROM only works properly if your computer’s region is set to Japan. All of the Japanese text is non-unicode and will not render properly on modern English operating systems; the copying application also does not run unless the system is set to Japan, and the OS will think some folders are corrupted. The programs and folders seem to work perfectly on a Windows 10 machine with the region set to Japan.

No, I’d say that that’s a pretty accurate way to describe me, considering what I’m doing.

Alright people. Buckle up cus it's finally time i tell you the history of Animal Crossing!!!! (After putting it off for awhile)
Originally named どうぶつの森 (Doubutsu no mori) in Japan meaning Animal Forest. It was introduced at Spaceworld 2000 in Japan and many people have claimed there was a playable demo there. I believe there is a bit if footage you can find on it but I may be wrong.
Doubutsu no mori released on April 14, 2001 on the Nintendo 64 exclusively in Japan. Only 8 months later on December 14, 2001 they released Doubutsu no mori + for the Gamecube which contained extra features left out of the 64 version such as the museum and the Able sisters (along with house upgrades I believe) and used the Gamecube's built in clock.
Finally, they localised and released the game under the title Animal Crossing: Population Growing in North America on September 16, 2002, Australia on October 17, 2003, and Europe on September 24, 2004 on the Gamecube
However, on June 27, 2003 Japan release yet another version of the game titled Doubutsu no mori e+ where they added even more new features for villagers such as: extended dialogue, the best friend system, sickness, likes/hates, catching fleas, etc. In this version of the game you could use the e card reader to obtain certain items. In this version of the game you could also buy an island from Tom Nook which you could access through Kapp'n. Once you got to this island you could name it, create a flag, and download it onto your Gameboy Advance to continue interacting with your islander or even trade islands with other players.
Animal Crossing Wild World released for the Nintendo DS in Japan on November 23, 2005, North America and Australia on December 5, 2005, and in Europe sometime in March of 2006.
On June 1, 2006 a Chinese version of Doubutsu no mori called 动物森林 (Dòngwù Sēnlín) was released for the iQue Player, a Chinese Nintendo console. Dòngwù Sēnlín is the original N64 version of the game despite featuring characters from Doubutsu no mori + on the cover.
Animal Crossing City Folk was releases in North America November 16, 2008 for the Wii followed by its release in Japan on November 20, 2008, Australia on December 4, 2008, and Europe on December 5, 2008. City Folk was compatible with the Wii Speak microphone, which allowed you to talk to other players who had it- essentially a form of voice chat. Fun fact: there's an add for the game where it is featured being used!!! One feature i absolutely love in this game is the fountain , where you can throw an axe into it and a special character named Serena will appear and she is how you obtain both the silver and golden axe.
Now onto Animal Crossing New Leaf was released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan and South Korea on February 7, 2013. After that, it released internationally across June of 2003: June 9 in North America, June 14 in Europe, and June 15 in Australia.
Animal Crossing Happy Home designer was released for the 3DS in Japan on July 30, 2015, North America on September 25, Europe on October 2, and Australia on October 3. This game was very different from the others and the main goal was to design houses for villagers.
In November of 2015 we were cursed with Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival for the Wii U. The game only sold 490,000 copies and was considering a failure.
Animal Crossing Pocket Camp was released on Android and iOS mobile devices on October 25, 2017 and 40 other territories on November 22, 2017- but other sources say it was the 21. Sadly, in the last year we received news that it will be shutting down, but apparently from what i know they will be making another version of it or something of the sort.
Animal Crossing New Horizons was released on March 20, 2020 internationally for the Nintendo Switch. This game introduced DIY crafting and in later updates, cooking. Eventually they added the Happy Home Paradise DLC on November 5, 2021 which essentially functions like Happy Home Designer, but unlocks new skill you can use on your island.
I must say, we've come a longggggg way with this game. It helped a lot of people through 2020- including me. Can't wait to see what's in store for us next. Hope you enjoyed learning about the history of the games and if you would like to know more (like stuff about merch or even the movie) ask away! :D

Nintendo fire this man!!!!!! 💥🔥🔥🔥
I gotta talk about this because i've been obsessed over this since like yesterday
Remember the "nintendo hire this man" joke meme thing?, well the person that made that mario in unreal engine goes by CryZENx
Now i never followed cryzen but i saw he posted a showcase of his ocarina of time remake, i came into it thinking: it's been a long while since then, perhaps he's gotten better
as i kept watching his video showcasing the OOT demo there were a lot of blatant errors and weird inconsistencies in the quality of models, animations were pretty rough too, they're good enough most of the time but just that
this was one of the inconsistencies that caught my attention the most, i didn't watch the whole video where he showed every stage he's made but i was skipping through the video and immediately recognized that guy under the tree is literally just the n64 model (screenshot taken from a comparison video)
i can't say for certain but i wouldn't doubt if there are more models that are straight up ripped from the original n64 game and slapped on unreal with the only difference being the lighting
there's many more models which look just fine, but they don't look that great, and again, the animations aren't helping the overall look
i also skipped through that comparison video and well at least most models look way better... but then i remembered, there's a 3DS remake of OOT, so i got curious and well
that's right, some models are just slightly modified / retextured from the 3DS remake, i'd love to check for more, i'm sure these aren't the only models that have been either a straight rip or changed just a bit, this is just in kokiri forest btw
you can argue he's trying to keep his stuff as faithful to the original as possible, but there's barely any effort or thought put into it, he's just putting the 3DS models in a new engine and calling it a day
okay but there's a good amount of modeling that actually looks great, like link's model, i think he did a great job on it, and it also makes sense since you're going to be seeing him all the time
now i'm no game dev (yet) and i don't use unreal (and plan to keep it that way) and right now i've only talked about the visuals, but there's also a ton of bugs and glitches some small, some others i wonder how they even happen, like not being able to move backwards and to the left, also on that same video there's this interesting comment
and that same person who commented is also working on a ocarina of time unreal engine remake
now by checking the wayback machine on his patreon page it seems he was getting about 150 dollars in late 2017, in 2019 it went up to around 400 and in mid 2020 and it had gone up to 1,000 and by 2021 he was making around 2,000
it'd be one thing to just make this as a passion project or just for fun, but people are giving you money, from september 2023 to 1,500 to 8,100 and right now as i write this he's at 14,000 members, he's only showing the number of members and not how much he's making but you can imagine it's a LOT of money
this is as far as i'm gonna look into this for now, but i'm sure there are a lot more issues, i don't hate cryzenx and you shouldn't attack him but it sucks seeing someone do almost the bare minimum and sacrificing clarity and style for realistic physically based rendering

Alright so, next game I plaid was DOOM 64 which is just a doom game on the 64, as good as a doom normally is I suppose lol
Next I tried out Doubutsu no Mori aka.: Animal Forest aka.: Animal Crossing's real first instalment, I plaied it a bit with an english mod, because that one only released in japan, and it is a nice game of course, I never plaied the GC animal crossing (first one I got was wild world) so it is nice to see the origins for the first time, only problem is.... every time I load the town it goes to a black screen... then I have to... reset... and load it again... which causes it to load properly but... it counts as a reset so........ Anyway, at least I got to experience the fire works festival which is unique to jp version of the game I think! that was nice.
next was Dr. Mario 64 which has some really cute cutscene and ingame graphics, with the cutscene using (lowress) artworks on paper like turouts and the ingame characters having some nice animated pixel art (despite the occasional pillowshading lol) very GBA like hah, gameplay wise it is just dr mario lol
Next I found a prototype called dragonstorm which is for a game called Dragon Sword 64, the game was cancelled by the published, but apparently was actually finished, this prototype definitely wasnt... 100% finished but I could try it out a little bit, nothing that felt too intertesting to note however... Speaking of prototypes I wanted to play Dinossaur Planet while on D games as well, but I couldnt get the prototype rom to run unfortunately... if I figure it out later I will definitely talk about it here
Next up was Dual Heroes which is another fighting game that feels just like bio freaks and dark rift, every character has a very long text crawl about their backstory and they all play the same pretty much... even tho each one is made by a different company, this one's theme is post apocalyptic + tokusatsu-esque super heroes power armor people I guess.....? I don't care too much for fighting games gkçdhgklhsdg
Next up was the Duke Nukem games, I mostly plaied Duke Nukem Zer0 H0ur because I am saving Duke Nukem 64 to play coop with a friend! Either way, n64 third person shooter standard stuff, but much better than any other I plaied so far for sure, also not safe for streaming I feel like hah, I only plaied through the first stage but I might play more on the coop campain later! and so...
🎉Nintendo 64 [D] Games 100%🎉

Review Story of Seasons Pioneers of Olive Town
This is only the second game of the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons I ever played on the console (the other being the one for N64), as I personally prefer the Handheld games.
The first games I ever played, were Harvest Moon and Harvest Moon 2 for the GameBoy Colour back then. Still being one of my favourites, especially HM2. I did play Mineral Town (not the remake), Harvest Moon Two Towns, HM New Beginnings -another favourite of mine-, Story of Seasons and now PoOT.
It's your typical SoS game, if you are familiar with the game series. I was a bit surprised how easy it is, to archieve things in this game or how fast you have access to different materials and can collect them. Personally, I feel like it's more difficult in the Handheld games. You don't have Animals roaming around your farm to tame them. Your are lucky if you get at least one cow as a gift. Though this game sure reminds me a lot of HMNB, perhaps why I do enjoy playing it.
The village lies right next to the farm, which is nice if you need to buy something or just want to talk to the villagers. Above the village is a little forest area, which is a it too small for my taste. Guess because your farm has a lot of forest, they didn't feel the need to add more. You can also customise your character, which is always a nice addition. I personally love if you can individual your game!
On a sidenote, I haven't played Trio of Towns yet, so if anything I mention as a new addition, that's because.
Animals
You have the traditional horse, cow and sheep, the later added alpacas and angora bunnies and of course, cats and dogs as pets. Newly added are goat and buffalo.Taking care of them is quite easy, as you don't need to build or buy any tools for it (unlike the handheld games). Also the fact you don't even need to buy animals to begin with, as they already roam around free on your farm. That is..quite an interesting way to give you your farm animals. The buildings also already exist, if broken and you need to repair them. But with enough material and/or money, they are quickly repaired.
You can't pick up the smaller animals though.
Kind of funny though, that chicken eat hay here instead of grains.
Crops and Harvesting
Not much to say here, it's the same as always. Buy crops, plant them and harvest. Thanks to the new addition of having access later on to seperate gardens all in different seasons, you can plant any fieldfruit you want anytime! Or you just use the hydroculture plant once you repaired it (this one will take a while though).
Fishing
There is lots of different kind of fishes to catch and plenty of places to do so. I found it interesting that you can now give your fish to the museum, as a donation. Kind of reminds me of Animal Crossing. Fishing itself got a bit more challenging, as you can't just pull them out like in, say, Story of Seasons. You need to watch the colour of the fish and pull it out once it's in a blue colour. But it won't remain like this, so you have to be careful.
Wild Animals
You can take photos of them and give it to the museum, so they can make little statues of them! Sadly, you can't befriend them in this game.
Your Farm
Your farm is seperated in three parts, to which you don't have access to in the beginning. It's once again a bit like New Beginnings, in which you also have three different areas. So, lots of space to do and put stuff into! Each area also has a mine, which differs in size and challenge. Four different kinds of trees can be chopped, as well as four different kind of grass. All of them are important materials you should hoard of, as many as possible.
Your skill-set and awards
That is an addition I quite like. Every skill has 10 levels. The higher your skill becomes, the easier things get. You also earn access to either hidden places or learn to build new furniture, walkways, Makers and other things. Speaking of upgrading your skills: Most upgrades come with little awards, you can get by going to the town hall.
Makers
There are a lot of them! To think in New Beginnings and Story of Seasons, you had seperate buildings for it. Here you have Maker for anything you need. Even big versions you get later on and are quite helpful.
Gnoms
They came in different colours and functions. Once you befriend them, they will not only give you access to different hidden places. You can go and visit their village, with each of them rewarding you with different items once you talk to them.
Marriage canidates
I heard some people saying they are all boring and one dimensional. Not sure if I agree on it. For once I find them all likeable and the more you get to know them, the more you learn about them. Also to be honest, in most games they don't have too much depth to them and often follow a certain pattern. I think the fun part is, to make things up for them yourself. Though I will agree that they are lacking in dialogue and actions. It won't change much, even after you married them. They will only wish you a happy birthday and there are no more -at least implied- kissing scenes, which is funny because in the handheld games you have them. May be because of the whole 'You can marry also of the same gender' and they are trying to play it safe. In case for people who don't like it. But why not include an option to activate it or not. I don't mind it at all, it's a good addition.
Oh right, the kid is also given to you, probably also because of the aforementioned case.
Events
They are a bit lacking. There is no Valentines Day, no Cooking contests, no Animal contests. Honestly one of the weaker parts of the game, as those events become boring quick. Two events just searching for things (automatic, no input from the player), fishing contest, a strenght contest and the rest are just cutscenes.
Clothes You can produce the materials you need for your new clothes and bring it to the boutique. It usually takes a day to get the new clothes. This is more akin to New Beginnings, the Story of Seasons, in which you get to make all your clothes yourself.
Now a few things I didn't like much. For example you can't upgrade the boxes to put more items in. You can put furniture and items only in one direction in your house and only put them down on certain places.
( I do got the big house in the meantime, whith one additional room added, only for items to add in)
Also once you have a child, it doesn't get included in town events and you can't even give a gift to it. That is a bit sad. There is not much interaction there, beside perhaps a little cutscene or two.
And you can't add ä, ö or ü in names in the german version. May be a little nitpicking, but I'd prefer if the game allows me to use them. Otherwise some names look so odd and need more letters. Oh and the game tends to get slow-downs and odd little clipping glitches from time to time.
I'll drop a few more screenshots and end this review. I probably forgot a few things, but that' the most I have to say for this game. I enjoy it and I think fans of these games will mostly enjoy it too. Though of course, there is still room for some improvements.
(Oh yes, I do like having a box to sell my stuff and not needing to wait until I can sell it on, say, like a market)
The husband and kid Silver.
My pets Lyra (grey cat- scottish foldcat), Creme (white cat), Red (Border Collie) and Sky (little Wolf).
