Writing Roundup 2020
This is a writing reflection I’ve been doing for myself every year for the last four years. Its a positive boost to myself see how far I’ve come and look back on my progress for the past year and look forward to the new year.
Everyone is welcome to use this same format if they’d like to do the same!
~~~~~~~
Stats:
Words written:
330,000, which is nearly half of all the words I’ve written on Ao3 in the last three years.
One Shots Posted (all fics plance unless otherwise stated):
In the Arms of the Ever(pink?) Tree (4463 words)
For the Plance Secret Santa exchange. Post s8 date/not date on a snowy moon. Love confession.
Birthday Treats (2129 words)
For Pidge’s birthday this year! Domestic family fluff, breakfast in bed, plance kids.
Begin Again (Together) (4805 words)
Canon divergence from before episode one! Pidge and Lance are established dating when alien intervention brings them to where they are supposed to be: with the Blue Lion. Just a brief look into what the AU would look like.
Common Ground (4521 words)
A treat for my friends who introduced me to Magic Knight Rayearth and pointed out some fun character parallels. There is this beautiful art Arya made to go with it because we’re all trash for both series. Plance meet up with Fuu and Ferio post series for both couples.
Bonded To You (1808 words)
For the Langstron Halloween Exchange! Established plance with a baby Lance is trying to keep safe from a witch who would take advantage of the child’s heritage.
It Tasted Good (6785 words)
Pikelavar for Pikelavar Month! The premise is crack, but it's mostly treated seriously. Pike ate the Jewel of Jitan by accident and doesn’t realize it until Haggar finds them. Meklavar gets Protective.
The Remainder of Days (3188 words)
Part of my Bad Things Happen Bingo. Fantasy AU where Pidge is a minor forest goddess and Lance is her neighbor mortal farmer.
I Love You a Lily More Each Day (3232 words)
Another of the Bad Things Happen Bingo. Canon compliant where Lance is undercover at a flower shop and knee deep in an illegal smuggling operation.
Lease on Life (4978 words)
This one was also part of Bad Things Happen Bingo and was an experiment. It’s POV of an oldest plance kid, canon verse. Her parents Paladin days come back to haunt them one night. Some cute family stuff too in there.
Ready to Dance (4135 words)
For the Valentine’s Day exchange! Post series. Lance tries to get back into the party scene and Pidge rescues him from a disastrous night.
Loopholes (5476 words)
Technically I didn’t write this fic this year, but a very kind reader asked if I would post this to Ao3, so it was my first fic of the year on Ao3. It’s Lotura! Originally a gift for a dear friend I’ve had since elementary school. It’s a fantasy AU where Lotor stumbles into Allura’s kingdom needing help.
Next to Me (7311 words)
Also for Bad Things Happen Bingo, this is probably one of my favorite fics of the year. This is the canon verse AU that went all wrong in s7, and Sendak succeeds in destroying Earth. Lance and Pidge end up not only his prisoners, but also two of the last humans in the universe. Ends open ended, but it became a series in the end!
Into Me (14248 words)
The sequel to the above fic. There are two versions, this and the one below. The title tells all. Lance and Pidge come to terms with their new life aboard Sendak’s flagship and do their best to keep the other comforted.
Into Me (non-explicit version) (7228 words)
Exactly the same as the fic above, only this one is SFW
Sunshine (3831 words)
A Bad Things Happen Bingo! One of my favorite concepts. Canon verse. Pidge gets sick while she and Lance are on a scientific mission.
Showoff (635 words)
A really short fic for a friend on their birthday, featuring their plance kids!
Respite of the Heart (4181 words)
A fic I have been wanting to write for a very long time. I love the concept of Pidge as a Disney Princess in the sense she has the forest guardian theme and all these animals love her. So there’s some play on that as the Paladins stop for lunch on their journey back to Earth in early s7. Lance comes to a realization and they have a chat surrounded by the animal friends. @anchoredtetherart did a phenomenal piece to accompany it. Please look at it in awe here.
The Hardest Part (3960 words)
For Bad Things Happen Bingo! An AU of the episode The Reunion where Pidge doesn’t return when she’s supposed to.
A Planned Sacrifice (4988 words)
Another Bad Things Happen Bingo. Canon verse. Pidge assumes that being a sacrifice for the ‘forest god’ is strictly ceremonial and at worst a wild animal. It’s actually Sendak, who no one has seen since Shiro shot him out of the Castle. He remembers Pidge and is far too pleased to see her again, tied up on a silver platter.
Almost Forgotten, but Not Gone (3946 words)
Bad Things Happen Bingo. AU sometime in s1 where Haxus isn’t as dead as Pidge thought.
Touch (7519 words)
Written for the Lance Goes Boom bang! It was inspired by @fenixseraph ‘s amazing art here! It’s a different take on The Way Forward, where Pidge and Lance are separated from the rest of the team and placed in their own cell. And the Red Lion causes issues.
Chaptered Fics started/added to:
Wolf In Thieves’ Clothing (4516 words)
An AU of The Castle of Cagliostro from Lupin the Third series. Lee, you have my thanks forever for making me watch this finally. Pidge is a literal princess whose kingdom is in the middle of an internal coup. Lance is a gentleman thief who rides with his best buds Hunk and Matt. Their paths are destined to cross again when Lance goes back to the castle he used to call home.
Game of Love (4593 words)
The most crack of the bunch. AU of Fall the of the Castle of Lions where Sendak and Haxus get away with it all. Pidge and Lance are prisoners on Haxus’ new ship, and Lance finds an opportunity for eventual escape when he learns that Haxus has a crush on his second in command. Operation matchmaker begins. (happy ending planned for all)
What Tides May Bring (20704 words)
Collab with the fantastic @anchoredtetherart for MerMay! Established plance as mermaids and guardians of their elements with adorable mer child. Then angst because they are all captured by a ‘research’ institute.
Seasons of Magic (16546 words)
I actually added a chapter this year! Ongoing collection of one-shots with mage Pidge who lives in the country and cultivates her plant magic and makes potions with the assistance of her dragon familiar, Lance. Mostly domestic fluff.
Too Soon and Not Soon Enough (11438 words)
Added another chapter this year to my Keith-centric AU. It’s basically VLD but five years early and they’re all literally child Paladins. Keith gets to meet Krolia earlier and its fun to go into tween friendships as they try and navigate the reality of their situation.
Seeds (48833 words)
Added a ton earlier this year. A collection of plance fics all or mostly under 500 words. All meant to be adopted by others if interest strikes. Covers many genres.
Chaptered Fics Finished:
Resolve to Fly (75799 words)
Written for the Pidge Angst Bang. My artist @alchemie0 did an outstanding job capturing the feel of the fic. Look at the art here! Canon verse AU where Pidge encounters Haxus, who has crashed on Earth. She helps him repair his ship in excitement and good faith, which he pays back by kidnapping her. For two years she survives as little more than a housepet on Sendak’s ship. Gen.
Who's Protecting Who? (28989 words)
Also technically not written this yeah, but posted. A collab with Hush waaaay back in 2018. It's a plance Altean AU with Pidge as distant royalty and Lance as a bodyguard.
A Dish Served Cold (21533 words)
Finally finished this one! Canon verse in which Pidge accidentally runs into Sendak on an isolated planet. Sendak takes advantage of this encounter and tries to return to the Empire with her in tow. Much Pidge whump. Gen
Reflections:
Best title
I still really really love Too Soon and Not Soon Enough (11438 words). Because it's too soon for the Paladins to be Paladins, and for Keith it's not nearly soon enough for Krolia to return. It just feels like it has a lot of heart to it. I hope I can keep it going, but my ideas are incredibly scattered for it.
Worst title
Touch (7519 words). Yeah it’s a play on ‘Don’t you touch her’ but it feels soooo dry.
Best/worst last line
Best: This was really, really hard choice this year, but ultimately, making up for the terrible title, its Touch (7519 words)
“It feels good to escape the ship with all of his teammates, secure in the knowledge that he has a way forward not just as a Paladin, but also with Pidge.”
- Not only did I manage to fit the title of the episode in there, it's got that hopeful tinge to it and reflects on personal growth both internally and with Pidge.
Worst: This one isn’t necessarily bad from Begin Again (Together) (4805 words), but it could be better. It didn’t get quite the epic sense I was hoping to pull from it.
“Okay,” he smirks, hand firmly on the throttle. “Operation save Earth starts now.”
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
Definitely wrote way more. Even with posting two fic that are essentially the exact same, I still ended up writing nearly half of my total Ao3 word count this year. (330,000/670,000). Doing Bad Things Happen Bingo was a bit part of that - I was very inspired at the beginning of this year - but also there were many events I participated in (8 total!!) on top of my personal projects.
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
A really hard decision this year, because there are several that make me really happy. I think oddly enough though, it’s Game of Love (4593 words) because of its potential and how much crack it is. It has such whacky rom-com energy to it but also that underlying angst of the situation I can fall back on. My favorite trope to explore is what happens to the characters when they’re captured. I just really enjoy the concept and the challenge to make such a concept believable with minimal suspension of belief.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Using kudos as my gauge (and not counting the chapter fics), the winner is:
Respite of the Heart (4181 words)
Not surprising because Ivy’s art is STUNNING.
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
I think that’s It Tasted Good (6785 words), the pikelavar fic. Pikelavar is underappreciated in general
Story that could have been better?
For all I was excited to write Sunshine (3831 words), it didn’t quite fall the way I had imagined in my mind. I don’t know if it was the structure or I was running out of steam or what. All i know is that I wanted more but all I could concentrate on was that scene where he’s caring for her in bed. Maybe I was just too ambitious.
Sexiest story?
No brainer it's Into Me (14248 words). Literally. Which really shocked me that it happened. Didn’t think I’d write any smut at all, let alone this year. This particular fic just kinda called out for it
Saddest story?
The prequel to the above fic: Next to Me (7311 words). How much more sad can you get than Earth being destroyed, being Sendak’s prisoners all while trying to tell each other ‘i love you’ without seeming weird because you’re the last humans in the universe.
Most fun?
I think it's Ready to Dance (4135 words). Just Valentine’s fluff and impromptu slow dancing in the park at night.
Story with single sweetest moment?
I’m picking What Tides May Bring (20704 words). Listen, mer Lance and mer Pidge playing with their mer baby in their domestic paradise is probably one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. Dad Lance has my heart.
Hardest story to write?
The last chapter of A Dish Served Cold (21533 words) was like pulling teeth. I’m pretty happy with it in the end but at the time man it was so hard.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I wrote smut. It was...weird? But also strangely calming. I wrote more for another fic but it's still a WIP. I definitely need to be in the mood to write it.
Proudest Achievement:
The Pidge Angst Bang. Resolve to Fly (75799 words). Look at that word count. I only wanted something under 3k at first, so it was just going to be Pidge meeting Haxus. But by the time I finished that part it was already 10k. So even though I was going through a rough part of my life, I just kept going and it ended up being my therapy. I’m really proud of the fic and I love my artists’ pieces. It really lifted my spirits. (You should all really go check out the Ao3 collection of all the bang stories and art they are AMAZING you won’t regret. If you love Pidge angst they are all must reads.)
What are your fic writing goals for next year?
I’d like to finish my Bad Things Happen Bingo card and then focus on my current WIP, that includes the Seeds collection. There are days I still feel a bit overwhelmed, and I’m still trying to find a routine after moving. I’d like to do more events too, but I think I need to be more selective about which ones I do. I don’t want to burn myself out.
Apart from that, I’d really like to try and give back to the community more. I’d like to start consciously writing fics for others without an event to go by.
Baby Animals Are Romantic
A gift for @semicolonsandsimiles who gave me the prompt “post-canon/established relationship” for the @pynchpromptweek Pynch Secret Santa 2020. Have some of Ronan and Adam being soft and going on dates with each other!
Title: Baby Animals Are Romantic
Word Count: 3301
Summary: Adam had never been to the county fair before, so when Ronan suggests they go he figures this is a farming thing. But Adam's eager to spend time with his boyfriend, even if he also has to listen to an auctioneer trying to sell steers. Or, in which Ronan just wants to take his oblivious boyfriend on a date and maybe hold hands on the Ferris wheel.
Read on AO3
Ronan approached him a couple of weeks after they had finally discussed the dream-goop. It felt like they had progressed to a new stage of their relationship, with Ronan dedicated to his dreaming again and Adam figuring out what school was going to look like. Adam was bent over one of his many lists (this one a bulleted list of all the work study opportunities on campus) when Ronan rested his shoulder on the door jam to the study where Adam had taken up residence.
He liked the large wooden desk.
“You know, the fair’s coming up,” Ronan muttered.
“The what?”
Adam looked up from his list — the best chance for steady hours was working in the campus cafeteria but the assignment at the library would let him do surreptitious homework on the job more often — and frowned at Ronan. He could remember a school fair in elementary, but Ronan wouldn’t have those same memories.
“Wait, the county fair?” Adam laid his pen down carefully on the desk and leaned back.
The county fair took place every August at the fairground, which was just another field north of Singers Falls. Aglionby never paid much attention to the county fair, with the ruckus of the Fourth of July always outshining anything else that happened during the summer up until last year. Adam vaguely remembered some of his classmates in elementary school talking about their 4H projects or art submissions with markers and crayons.
“I’ve never been to the fair,” Adam said slowly. Ronan stood up straighter, pushing himself off the door. “What’s even there?”
“Y’know, competitions and shit, who can grow the biggest pumpkin, who’s got the best pig.” Ronan slumped fully into the room to lean against Adam’s desk, like standing straight was a hassle for him. “There’s rides they set up for kids, like those tiny airplanes that you get in and spin around.”
Adam didn’t say that he had never been in those rides as a kid. He knew Ronan wasn’t bringing that up to remind Adam of what he hadn’t had. They just had different perspectives of what kids had. Adam had a mattress on the floor of the double-wide, and Ronan had a dad who created magical things from dreams.
“And the auctioneer will come by to sell off livestock and shit,” Ronan said, speaking faster. “Steers and stuff for farmers. Sometimes there’s baby animals from the stock.”
Oh, so that was a thing. Adam leaned his elbows on the desk so that he could be closer to Ronan’s downturned face.
“You wanna go?”
Ronan’s shoulders slumped so fast that Adam barely noticed how high they had been before. But Ronan’s face relaxed at the same time, and that was more fun for Adam to watch.
“Shit, Parrish, don’t act like you're doing me a favor or anything,” Ronan drawled.
Adam rolled his eyes. For everything that had happened over the summer, Ronan was still shit at asking for what he wanted. He could’ve just asked Adam to go with him to the county fair auction.
“Fine.” Adam hid his smile in his shoulder and picked up his pen again. “When’s the auction?”
“Friday afternoon,” said Ronan. “You just have the factory shift on Friday, right? You’re free after that.”
Ronan asked like he didn’t have Adam’s whole work schedule memorized. Adam looked up and didn’t bother concealing his smile at Ronan.
“Yep.”
To Adam’s delight, the tips of Ronan’s ears turned pink as he nodded as if nothing was unusual about that.
“Good.” Ronan turned on his heel and marched back out the door. “Hey, brat, what’re you doing with that?”
Adam left Ronan to manage Opal on his own, but he was still smiling when he hunched back over his lists.
…
They left Opal with the Fox Way ladies on Friday, something Opal herself had mixed feelings about, but she seemed happy enough with all the various herbs the women let her chew on. Ronan drove the two of them back through Singers Falls and up to the fairgrounds.
Adam had only ever seen it when it was an empty field, mostly mowed down grass with patches of dirt or mud, depending on the season. Ronan kept vibrating in the driver’s seat, shifting so aggressively that Adam wondered if he should’ve offered to go “driving” with him before going to the fair. Or instead of it.
When they finally got to the fair, just after lunch, the field was already half full of cars on one side of the skinny two-lane road. The field on the other side of the road was full of white tents and footpaths around the various attractions. Rows of red and yellow and green tractors stretched out from one side of the fair into the empty trimmed field. True to what Ronan had said, there were a few carnival rides for kids, including a full sized Ferris wheel near the center of the fair.
“There’s a lot of people here,” Adam noted as they parked and got out of the Beemer. Lots of people was typically not Ronan’s jam.
“Don’t be a wuss, Parrish,” Ronan said. He hurried around the car to stand close to Adam’s side. “Let’s go.”
He grabbed at Adam’s hand and jerked him towards the road. Adam went. It was hard not to follow Ronan Lynch when he was this much like Ronan Lynch, a black T-shirt covering his shoulders while the wicked curves of his tattoo peeked out at the base of his neck.
For a minute as they crossed the road, Adam wondered if he should be more careful, if he should take his hand away from Ronan’s. His parents weren’t generally fair-goers, so he didn’t expect to see them or anyone else from the trailer park here, but farmers were their own kind of people. What would they think about two boys holding hands as they ran to the admission booth? But as soon as they pulled up to the ticket window where a gray-haired lady with a straw hat sat taking money, Ronan let go of Adam’s hand to dig in his pocket.
“I could’ve got that,” Adam protested, mostly because he could.
“So, you can buy us lunch,” said Ronan as he folded his wallet and shoved it back into his jeans.
The lady gave a string of pink paper tickets to Ronan, who tore it in half and gave one half to Adam. He took them and frowned at them. They looked like raffle tickets, but Adam wasn’t sure what purpose they served here.
“C’mon,” Ronan said and walked through the gates.
Inside the fairgrounds were full of lines of people grouped and moving like pods of fish. The packed squadrons of bodies all moved the same way, like rush hour traffic with bodies instead of cars. Ignoring everyone, Ronan pulled Adam to a stop in front of a fork in the dirt path and tilted his chin up towards the open sky.
“The games are that way.” Ronan pointed to the right.
Adam saw the pointed tops of colorful booths painted in reds and oranges and mechanical spires that — sure enough — propelled tiny metal airplanes up with kids strapped in and screaming in delight.
“I wanna know if they have the stupid carnival shooting games,” said Ronan. Adam rolled his eyes, but Ronan’s eyes went yet another direction. “There’s the Ferris wheel.”
Adam followed Ronan’s finger to the large white and purple wheel at the other side of the fairgrounds, straight ahead of where they were.
“Yeah, looks kinda cheesy.” Adam had only seen those kinds of things in movies. But it wasn’t what Ronan was here for, and in lieu of a responsible farmer, Adam supposed he could nudge Ronan towards the actual prize. “Where’s the animals? You said there would be babies.”
A frown darted quickly across Ronan’s face as he turned to Adam, but then he softened into something private, something reserved for Adam and the Barns. It was the kind of look that made Adam think they could survive a few years of long-distance, as long as Ronan always looked at him like that when he came home.
“Yeah, sure, Parrish, let’s go look at the babies,” said Ronan.
Slipping his shoulder behind Adam’s back, Ronan nudged Adam forward and down the left-hand path. They navigated around the people walking the opposite direction, and Adam felt Ronan’s hand pressing against his back, just below his shoulder blades where Ronan’s body blocked anyone looking closely at the two boys. Adam’s skin felt hot under his T-shirt.
They walked together to a long barn with a shiny metal roof, and Ronan shifted to take the lead up the incline to the end of the barn where the main doors were standing wide open. Adam recognized the smell immediately: hay and warm bodies and corn. But this was different from the Barns in a way that Adam could only attribute to the dream quality of Ronan’s home. Even once everything was awake again, there was a sense of peace over the whole thing, a wildness that the cows, the deer, Opal, and Ronan himself all were a part of.
But Ronan looked happy enough to be in his natural environment. The thought of teasing Ronan that he belonged in a barn made Adam’s mouth quirk up. Ronan grabbed his hand before he could say anything and pulled Adam towards one side of the barn.
“Look,” Ronan pointed into the pen.
People were pressed up against the wood of the pen, but Ronan just elbowed a man out of the way and ignored the glare that he received in turn. Adam scoffed but walked up beside Ronan and looked inside the wooden pen. Two lambs sat in the pen next to the back wall while a third lamb walked around on spindly legs, jerking its way back and forth from the many outstretched hands of the people crowding the pen then darting back to the safety of the other lambs away from people.
Adam rested his elbows on the top of the pen and watched the lamb dance back and forth adventurously, nipping at the outstretched fingers of a kid who had climbed up the rungs of the pen and then hopping back out of reach of all the adult hands that stretched out to pet the animal. Beside him, Ronan sighed and leaned down over the closed pen, nearly folding himself in half. He let his hand dangle loosely near the fluffy bedding lining the pen and ignored the rest of the people clamoring to see the baby lamb and entice them closer. Adam watched as one of the lambs from the back of the pen got up on its own shaky legs and nosed its way closer. Ronan wiggled his fingers and let the lamb approach him and sniff cautiously.
Adam leaned harder onto Ronan and watched the lamb lick at Ronan’s fingers, wary but eager for something that Ronan had. Adam could sympathize.
Ronan glanced up.
“Wanna pet him?” he asked softly, his voice toned down from his usual boisterous shredding of the English language.
Adam scooted closer to Ronan and leaned down with him, letting his fingers dangle just like Ronan had instead of thrusting his hand out in beckoning motions like the rest of the people. The lamb moved from sniffing Ronan’s fingers to seeking out Adam’s. It’s tongue tickled the tips of his fingers, and Adam stretched his hand out a little further and gently patted the top of the lamb’s head. He turned to see Ronan grinning at him.
“C’mon,” said Ronan. “I bet there are some calves they got further down.”
…
They passed through the other end of the livestock barn, where Ronan had stopped by pretty much every pen to see the baby animals and try to entice each one closer. Every time he had gotten an animal to come close to him, he offered petting privileges to Adam, which he appreciated. But Adam liked seeing Ronan’s unique magic with barns and baby animals even more than touching them himself. For all his dangerous appearance, Ronan was most at home being soft around animals.
After the barn, Ronan dragged Adam — fairly willingly but still — down the continuing path that looped back around to the carnival games that were all grouped together, next to the mechanical toy rides. Adam beat Ronan in a game of “shoot the water gun at the target,” which won him both an oversized red foam cowboy hat and a heated look from Ronan. It was only when Ronan had a bizarrely large stuffed giraffe under his arm that Adam thought he might be missing something.
“We should get food,” Ronan said. “You’re buying, right?”
Adam glanced down at the beaten watch on his wrist, still able to tell him when he was about to be late for a shift.
“What about the auction?”
Ronan frowned at him.
“Why would you wanna see an auction?” he demanded. “It’s just a bunch of people yelling about cows.”
“You yell about cows on a regular basis, Lynch.” Adam rolled his eyes. Ronan was probably just protesting too much and didn’t want to go to something that he was being forced to.
“Those’re my cows, though,” Ronan said into Adam’s good ear. “Special breed.”
Adam felt his cheeks flush and tried to brush the blush away with the back of his hand.
“Let’s do whatever you want,” he tried. “Where d’you want to go?”
Ronan stopped in between a booth with a ring toss and the back of a food cart that smelled like hot oil and sugar.
“I brought you to have fun, Parrish,” he said. “Are you that much of a workaholic? We talked about this.”
Adam bristled. He breathed in deeply, almost matching Ronan’s smoker-inhale, and told himself to be calm.
“Excuse me for trying to make sure you get what you need outa this,” he muttered lowly.
“Excuse you?!” Ronan’s eyebrows flew up.
Adam grimaced. The words had slipped out. Fighting with Ronan was still a charged activity for the both of them. Adam was still getting used to softness, from both himself and from Ronan Lynch.
“Look, I’m trying to be considerate of you here,” Adam explained very calmly.
“Well, don’t feel like you have to spare my fucking feelings!” Ronan bit out.
Adam threw his hands into the air, funny cowboy hat and all.
“You wanted to come!”
“I wanted to go on a date with you!” snapped Ronan.
Adam blinked his way out of his sudden anger and felt his stomach sink in its absence. Ronan looked suddenly sheepish and angry that he was sheepish. His jaw ticked like he was clenching his teeth, like he was trying to hold his words back from where they could do the most damage to Adam.
“I can do better than just driving in cars,” Ronan said. “This was gonna be fun. Way to ruin the day.”
Adam’s stomach turned to lead. He hated the idea that this was all ruined because of him. Part of his mind argued that going to the county fair was a weird idea for a date, but he recognized the defensive part of himself, the part that constantly looked for ways that he could get hurt so that he knew where to protect himself.
But the larger part of him saw Ronan’s jaw clench the same way it did when he was trying not to let his lip tremble, trying not to show how much he felt.
Adam thrust his red cowboy hat into Ronan’s hands and shoved him towards a wooden table in front of the food truck.
“Wait there,” he ordered. “I’ll get us lunch.” Ronan glowered at him unconvincingly. “Just wait there—” Adam just needed a couple of minutes to get his brain in order. “—I’ll be back.”
He marched off, trying to see what looked like actual food in this place.
…
Adam returned with a paper plate damp with grease and soaked in powdered sugar. Ronan was still sitting at the wooden picnic table, his head resting on his folded arms on the table. Adam slid the fried pile of dough toward Ronan and sat next to him. Sitting across would be too far away.
“I bought a funnel cake,” he said.
Ronan lifted his head and stared at the deep fried treat. It wasn’t real food, but Adam had thought it smelled good and was the kind of thing Ronan would enjoy stuffing his face with.
“I’m sorry,” Adam said. “I didn’t know this was supposed to be a date. I thought you were just looking for more animals for the farm.”
Ronan snuffled into his bare elbow and then rested his chin on his arms.
“You’re a real romantic, Parrish.”
Adam bent his head and leaned into Ronan’s shoulder so that he could hide the small smile that threatened his mouth. Ronan was at least willing to forgive him, which made the shameful tightness in his belly abate a little.
“You like baby animals, though.” Adam pressed his head against Ronan’s stubbled skull. “I knew you wanted to come here.”
Ronan shifted beneath him like he wanted to sit up straighter but didn’t want to actually lose Adam’s touch.
“So, you didn’t wanna come?”
“I didn’t say that,” Adam said quickly. He drew his head back so that he could wrap his arm around Ronan’s waist cautiously, still aware that they were surrounded by people who had probably grown up like Adam’s parents. “I liked seeing you with the lamb. That was cute.”
Ronan’s ears turned bright pink, and he turned to hide most of his face against Adam’s neck.
“Shuddup.”
Adam grinned.
“I’m just saying.” He shifted his hand up to cover Ronan’s ribs. “I would’ve come even if I didn’t know it was a date. I like being with you.”
Ronan relaxed into him, and Adam held his breath like he always did when he had to remind himself that this was his now. He wasn’t being selfish for having this.
“So, next time I should spell things out for you,” Ronan murmured into his neck.
“Might be good.” Adam knew his own weaknesses, and he was prone to not communicating. He was working on that.
Then Adam straightened, shifting so that Ronan’s head rolled off his neck.
“Or I could ask you,” Adam said to Ronan’s confused (and slightly disappointed) look. “Ronan Lynch, do you want to ride the Ferris wheel with me?”
The brief glance of Ronan’s wide eyes made Adam smile through his heated cheeks. He knew he was blushing, but Ronan’s cheeks were fully pink now.
“I can try to bribe the guy to stop us at the top,” said Adam. “Like in the movies.”
Ronan inhaled his smoker’s breath and leaned so close that he nearly headbutted Adam.
“Thought that was cheesy.”
“I don’t need a replay of what I missed out on, Lynch.” A bit of leftover shame curled in Adam’s stomach before he smothered it entirely. He focused on softening his face, and he took Ronan’s hand tentatively. “But if you want to show me your favorite stuff, I can get behind that.”
Ronan threaded his fingers through Adam’s.
“I wanna be with you,” he said. “The rest doesn’t matter so much.”
Adam grinned.
“So, come on.” Adam pulled Ronan until he followed Adam to his feet. “Let’s go.”
“What about the funnel cake?” Ronan protested. Adam didn’t think he really meant it.
“That’s barely food, Lynch.” He rolled his eyes anyway. “I’ll buy you some real food after the Ferris wheel.”
“Fair food is a time-honored tradition, you pleb.”
Adam grinned all the way through Ronan’s complaining as they walked hand-in-hand through the fairgrounds.
DOTA SECRET SANTA 2020
It’s October and that means it’s time to yet again spend all your spare lane gold on art supplies instead of support items!
As always, even if you aren’t participating, I’d be very grateful if you could signal boost by re-blogging! I’ll also be cross-posting to my Twitter *here* if that’s more your jam, please like and RT~
What’s a Secret Santa?
For those who have never done a Secret Santa before, the way it works is you submit a gift request, which goes into a pool which is then randomised. The randomised requests are then handed out to the participants.
So basically, its Mystery Gift! Everyone draws/writes a Dota-themed gift for someone. You won’t know who it’s for, and you won’t know who is doing yours! Then at Christmas we hand out the completed gifts anonymously to whomever they belong, via email.
Sounds good, where do I sign?
Send your email applications right here! -> [email protected]
What do I write in my application email?
1. Your name / tumblr tag / most used social media - a link to your blog would also be helpful so I know who you are and can contact you if emails are not working or something. A link to examples of your work (art tag, etc) is also appreciated!
2. Preferred gift rating. NSFW requests are totally okay as long as they are not offensive/racist/sexist but if you’d like something NSFW, please also provide a SFW alternative request as not everyone is comfortable producing such content. If you don’t mind receiving NSFW but would prefer not to submit it, please tell me and vice versa.
3. Your actual request! If you prefer shipping/non shipping, please tell me.
Examples of requests:
- [insert character here] all warm and toasty and happy by a fireside
- [insert characters here] exchanging Christmas gifts (sexily or non-sexily)
Your requests don’t have to be seasonal-themed, request whatever you like!
4. Whether you would be able to fill an extra gift if needed. Hopefully I won’t need to call on anyone, but in case of emergency this would be very much appreciated.
———- DEADLINES ————–
Applications: 10th November 2020, 00:00 GMT
Gift submission: 20th December 2020, 22:00 GMT
GIFT EXCHANGE WILL TAKE PLACE ON 25th December 2020 (time TBC)
———- RULES/GUIDELINES —————–
- Don’t be a butt. (generally the best rule to live by)
- Complete the gift using your MAD SKILLS, be it drawing or writing fanfic! If you have other cool magic abilities like animating, you’re welcome to use those too!
- Please submit completed works only. Your gift should be fully coloured if it’s art (unless you are specifically doing a monochrome / inked piece - please submit complete works only), and properly formatted, spell-checked and at least 1,000 words if it’s a written piece.
- For written pieces, google doc links/word documents are fine for the email exchange, but if you want me to include your fic in the tumblr master-post please bear in mind you need to post it somewhere link-able such as AO3.
- if you are submitting NSFW art, AO3 hosts art too! With the recent tumblr restrictions, this is a good hosting option and I think they have anon options too.
- Please don’t post any completed gifts on your blog before the gifts are exchanged on Christmas Day!
- if the deadline is approaching and you know you won’t be able to submit your piece in time, please tell me as soon as possible so I can arrange for someone else to fill your assigned prompt.
- if you’d like to remain anonymous, please tell me (there will be master-posts of all the submissions a couple of days after exchange)
- I’ll be tracking the tumblr tag ‘dota secret santa 2020’. If you have any issues, inbox me, email me or hmu on Twitter! (link above)
There’s also a Discord group - please let me know if you’d like an invite!
Scholastic Bookfest Q&A chat room (April 16 2020) about upcoming novel Moon: The Dragon Prince Novel #1 coming out June 4th.
[The chatroom was a mess, so I thought I’d just type this up. Also for those who missed the event.]
A: Hey everyone! I’m Aaron Ehasz the co-creator of the Dragon Prince and co-author of the novel!
M: Hi, I’m Melanie Ehasz, co-author of the novel!
A: Hi! Thanks everyone for coming! A: We’re at home in Santa Monica.
(Q:What island are you on? A: Is that an animal crossing question?)
(M: I like your wings, Partydog! Q: Where are you? A: We are on the Hub!)
Q: Can you tell us anything new about it? M: It is based off season 1, but it has more backstory and info.
Q: How did you come up with the idea? What was your inspiration? A: Justin and I wanted to do a cool fantasy story and we wanted it to do with Dark magic and how it would affect magical creatures in the world.
Q: How much of Amaya and her backstory will we see? A: There’s going to be a lot more info about Amaya and her special talents.
(Q: What’s your favorite kinds of books? M: My favorite is fiction.)
Q: Any word on season 4? A: We’re still waiting for season 4, but we’re very optimistic!
Q: What is the next seasons element? A: Book 1 element is Moon, when book four comes out, it will be Earth.
Q: Will there be characters in this book not yet in the show? A: You will learn about some new characters you haven’t heard about yet, but they’re part of the deeper backstory.
Q: Is this book told from someone’s point of view? M: It is told from multiple points of views.
Q: Will we see more backstory around Rayla and what it was like to grow up? M: We got a chance to get much deeper into some of the other characters.
A: We mention some new characters in the book, but I don’t think you see any in action yet. We also learn the secret name of the animal doctor’s cat.
Q: Does a deeper backstory involve a different timeline as well? A: The timeline is connected to the show, but just more details and hints.
Q: Is Zym in season 4? A: Of course! Zym is so important.
Q: What was the hardest character to move from the show to the book? / Which character was the hardest and easiest to adapt from show to novel? M: The most challenging and the most fun character to move from show is Viren.
Q: What style of writing is it? Like is it more of a Young Adult novel? A: The book is appropriate for all audiences, but deep for adult fans too.
Q: What character do you feel you relate to the most? A: These days I relate to King Harrow the most. M: I relate most to Claudia. A: That’s scary to hear Melanie!
Q: If you haven’t watched the show will you be able to understand the book? M: If you haven’t seen the show, you will definitely still be able to enjoy the book!
Q: What’s been the biggest challenge to novelizing a TV script? M: Coming up with descriptions that are all there when you watch the show, but having to invent them for the reader!
(**: It’s a sweet, beautiful, funny and love-filled show. You should totally give it a try. A: Thank you **! Cool name)
Q: Can you tell us about any of the illustrations in the book? A: One thing you can look forward to in the novel is a cool new map of Xadia. It has lots of new places and details of this world, just like the book
Q: Video game? A: The video game team is awesome and working hard, but you’ll still have to wait a while for that.
Q: I hope quarantine isn’t messing with the development. A: In some ways quarantine has been a benefit for creative work!
Q: How long have you been working on the book? M: We worked on the book for almost a year.
Q: Are there any characters you genuinely dislike? A: I dislike Fen. [Sidenote: Probably a reference to a joke on twitter about fake!Gren - he's the bearded Lieutenant interacting with Amaya while Gren's in the dungeon. ]
Q: Anything you wanted to do but had to cut? A: We’ve always found a way to tell the story we want to tell with as much depth as we want, but also keep it appropriate for younger audiences. Sometimes it’s a matter of suggesting things adults understand, but doesn’t scare off younger audiences! It is hard, but it’s part of the duty and pleasure of being a storyteller.
(Q: I’m a younger child so thank you for not scaring me off. A: Yay we love the younger people in our audience!)
(Q: Who has read Wings of Fire? [Another book published by Scholastic] A: The dragon prince is for you.)
Q: Why did you chose to be an author? A: Writing this story in a book was the best way to share the details and secrets of Xadia.
Q: How long is the book? M: The book is 288 pages.
Q: Will there be new revelations in the book that weren’t in the show? M: Yes!!! There will be plenty of new revelations in the book!
Q: Is there any confirmation of the season 4 release date? A: No news on seaon 4 yet… hang in there!
Q: Will we see more young Rayla? M: We learn more about Rayla’s point of view and what motivates her.[1]
Q: Will we learn more about the adult characters’s pasts in the show or book? M: We’re going to learn some very interesting things about Viren and his past
Q: Will Claudia be a main character? M: There will be sections from Claudia’s point of view.
M: Thanks for coming! A: We’re heading out for the next author A: Bye and thank you!
[1] From another interview about the novel:
An example Ehasz points to is one of Rayla’s first scenes in the series when she can’t bring herself to a kill a human.
“She’s an assassin who’s never killed someone. How do you clear your mind and go to just be the instrument of death and just finish it? How do you do it? That whole time, that’s what she’s trying desperately to do is just be an instrument of death and let her mind and heart keep that out of it and she loses that battle. [In the show itself] we show it and it’s raining and it’s beautiful, but that’s a chapter I love in this book. [It shows the reader] what she’s thinking and what a struggle it is for her trying so hard to kill this guy and she doesn’t do it.”
Also Through the Moon, a graphic novel set between seasons 3 and 4, is out September 15th 2020 and the Art of the Dragon Prince [from Dark Horse] is out August 4th 2020. (According to the official press release, it includes “never-before-seen concept sketches, preliminary designs, and first impressions from the first three seasons of the animated Netflix series expand over nearly 200 pages of content, from storyboards and environments to the characters and creatures that fans across the world have come to love.”)
According to a news release article from Scholastic Sky: The Dragon Prince Novel #2 is due out in Spring 2021 and a second graphic novel set between seasons 4 and 5 is penciled in for late 2021.
(FMP) Animation research
The first animator that comes to mind is a man called ‘Don Bluth’ he is one of my favourite animators of all time and in my opinion the man that defined traditional animation with strong story telling for many years. He used to work with Disney full time in 1971, which he helped produced Winnie the Pooh And Tigger Too, The Resurcures and even directed Pete’s Dragon.
Don Bluth Bio: Don Bluth was born in September 13 1937 and spent a bit of his life in ‘El paso’ In Texas. When he grew up to be 6 years old he and his family moved to Payton in Utah. He then lived on a family farm in which he worked. His personal quote on his experience of this is “milking 24 cows morning and night and singing Disney songs" Though he was "honestly dreaming of working" at working at Disney.
He first experienced his first Disney film at the age of 7 in which his first Disney movie was ‘Snow White’ he was so impressed with the film that when he arrived home and drew the 7 dwarfs and also Snow White.
In 1954 he and his family moved to Santa Monica California he studied at Brigham Young University. When he finished, he showed his portfolio at a Disney Studio in Burbank. He was hired in 1955 to be a assistant animator and worked on Sleeping Beauty. He also worked as assistant to John Lounsberry, he however left in 1957 to pursue his dream. In quote "I left, I think, because I found it kind of boring. I didn't want to do it”
He then worked at Disney again as a assistant again for the animated movie called ‘The sword in the stone’ In 1967 he worked at a company ‘Filmation’ however he wasn’t that satisfied, so he left and said by quote “"I realized that all of that industry out there was really making trashy art that wasn't good for kids to look at and eventually ended up in the trash can anyway. Everything was for money; nothing was for art,"
So he then said "I grew tired of that and said, 'Well, if I'm going to do this for a living, why don't I go back to Disney because they do it right." So in April 1971 he joined Disney and joined their training program of animation, who was the first to reach the highest rank of being an animator. His first project as a animator was Robin hood and other he worked on other animations. (The rest are above)
Around the 70′s 3 people called ‘Garry Goldmen’ ‘John Pomeroy’ and of course Don Bluth realized that they had animation talent and decided to co create the company ‘Sullivan Bluth Studios’ also know as ‘Don Bluth Productions’ Which they finally created their first animated film called ‘The sercet of NIMH’ Which was created the traditional way of animating. Which the labour intensive hand drawn frame by frame. But it is painted, so it was even harder
The Sercet Of Nimh:
Dragon’s Lair:
Source of image: http://store.steampowered.com/app/227380/Dragons_Lair/
The Sorcerer's Apprentice:
One of my favourite and most classic animation is ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ which was released in 1941 in the UK. It is animated beautifully and is my favourite animation short. It is also one of the animations, that is cartoony and looks realistic. For example the cute and funny character ‘Mickey Mouse’ wears realistic clothing in which a human would wear.
Source of Image: http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/The_Sorcerer%27s_Apprentice?file=Fantasia-disneyscreencaps.com-2363.jpg
The Sword in The Stone:
One of my favourite Disney movies of all time. It is a very realistically drawn movie. The character’s body proportions look really accurate and are well detailed. Especially the backgrounds, which has a very beautiful hand painted and drawn look to it. The colours are bright and also for some character’s are dark or dull, to show the realism or character’s personality.
For example, a person with bad intentions or just generally somebody that enjoys being bad, would usually have the typically dark clothing and look serious. The boy’s bright colors are bright and colorful for a reason. It is to show that he is a happy and good natured boy, while he may be a bit naughty. He only does it for a joke or a laugh as naturally most young boys do.
However the man with dark clothing who wields a bow with arrows and shows himself as a serious man. Shows that he is someone that won’t hesitant to hurt somebody or something. The weapon proves it as it is used to attack from a distance and from the look on his face. He clearly isn’t in the mood to mess around, he is clearly focused on a target or something.
If my one of my stories were to include a good and bad character, I would take inspiration from this film and how they portray them as such
Walt Disney Bio: He was born in 1901 in Hermosa, Illinois, he spent most of his childhood at Marceline, Missouri, where he began a early devolution for art, in which he did drawings and painted pictures and sold them off. He then later attended McKinley High School in around 1917 which be became a cartoonist for the school newspaper and also drew patriotic pictures during ww1.
He tried to join the American army in the mid 1918′s but wasn’t accepted due to his age. However he did join the Red Cross as ambulance driver.
A few years later later in January 1920, he started a tiny business with his friend ‘Iwerks‘ which is called ‘Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists’ though this business failed horribly. So Walt Disney and his friend made an agreement, Walt Disney would work for a company called “ Kansas City Film Ad Company” to earn money to support the company
However, these are just my favourite animation styles, it is hard to replicate the styles of them. So I wish to do a simple modern cartoon animation style for my FMP Project.
Here is some of my favourite animation styles of modern times:
Simpsons:
Source of image: https://www.theverge.com/2015/10/25/9457247/the-simpsons-al-jean-interview
While it is an old running series, it is still on going. It is very colourful and appealing to the eye. All the character’s within the picture are bright and colourful and usually goofy.
The whole appearance of the character’s are proportioned in a exaggerated cartoon way. They don’t look accurate to a real human figure, but they do look like a human figure, they just have odd exaggerated facial features and bodies. For example. Look at Lisa, The girl who is located left end corner. She looks human, though also looks like a cartoon due to her spiky hair and big eyes.
Archer:
Source of image: http://archer.wikia.com/wiki/Season_7
Here’s another animated series that i really like the style of. It is just simply realistic with bright colors. It reminds me of retro comic book styles of like the 50′s 60′s something akin like a marvel comic book of the time.
Spongebob squarepants:
Source of image: http://variety.com/2017/film/news/paramount-delays-spongebob-movie-release-until-2020-1202645765/
A classic late 90′s to 2000′s tv show for kids. The art style is appealing to the eye and very simple but strong. The exaggerated facial features quickly shows the character’s personality in the picture. As seen above, the character ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ has a big exgerated smile and mouth, his eyes add to his excitement and also shows the uncontrollable crazy nature of him. When you look at him, you can quickly tell he is happy and easily excited character.
Even though the character’s design is simple, the backgrounds are really well detailed and smooth. It is bright and colorful and also looks real, but at the same time wacky in nature of the show.
Gumball:
Source of image: https://www.cosmicbooknews.com/content/cartoon-network-announces-amazing-world-gumball-season-6
Here is another crazy and wacky cartoon show from the modern day. The shapes and bodies of the character are unrealistic and look like something out of a kids drawing. Which is a happy,unrealistic but cute and funny style. There is nothing wrong with not being realistic. It’s actually 2 styles, People create realistic cartoon shows and also create wacky and family friendly TV shows.
As seen above the crazy proportions of their bodies clearly show it is intended for a young audience and also intended to strengthen it’s comedy and enjoyable aspect of it. You can tell that it’s a wacky and funny series from the way their are portrayed.
So there are my modern animations styles that i like, which i could take inspiration from. Though here is my last list of animation styles that could inspire me to generate ideas or styles for my FMP animation
Spiderman the animated series 1994:
Source of image: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/spider-man-animated-series-cast-745604
Source of image: http://www.spidermancrawlspace.com/2010/10/12/1994-spider-man-episode-32-the-rocket-racer-review/
Source of image: Same as above
One of my favourite Marvel cartoons were the one seen above. It is as if the comic books have come alive. The style is realistic though with colourful colours, although not over the top and exaggerated. Just enough to be pleasing to the eye, while showing a serious adult theme into it. Character’s proportions and body sizes are realistic. Though the hero spider man and villains are designed in a cool and bulky way. The simple realistic drawing of them is what i really like the most, accompanied with realistic backgrounds. Makes it a very appealing and cool style and show to watch as well.
- For written pieces, google doc links/word documents are fine for the email exchange, but if you want me to include your fic in the tumblr master-post please bear in mind you need to post it somewhere link-able such as AO3.
- if you are submitting NSFW art, AO3 hosts art too! With the recent tumblr restrictions, this is a good hosting option and I think they have anon options too.
- Please don’t post any completed gifts on your blog before the gifts are exchanged on Christmas Day!
- if the deadline is approaching and you know you won’t be able to submit your piece in time, please tell me as soon as possible so I can arrange for someone else to fill your assigned prompt.
- if you’d like to remain anonymous, please tell me (there will be master-posts of all the submissions a couple of days after exchange)
- I’ll be tracking the tumblr tag ‘tlhod secret santa 2020’.
- This year my co-host is the marvellous Manny, who can be contacted *HERE* If you have any issues, please inbox either of us, drop an email to the secret santa address above, or hmu on Twitter! (link above)
There’s also a Discord group - please let us know if you’d like an invite!
