Learner Autobiography and Philosophy of Education

Abstract

           In this paper I will begin creating my educational philosophy and my beliefs as a future educator. As well as a brief explanation of those who inspired me to be where I am today. With the help of the two articles and survey it helped me conclude what teaching philosophy I go by in the near future as a professional educator.

Learner Autobiography and Philosophy of Education

         In my future classroom I want to promote a positive learning environment. I will do this by always using positive language and reinforcement. I want students to always feel comfortable with sharing their opinions. I want them to use an open mind and feel comfortable getting out of their comfort zones. I want to guide them and not push them to think one certain way because we are all entitled to our own opinions and thoughts. As mentioned in the article My Educational Philosophy “an adult learning environment, flexibility, authenticity, and competence are four critical areas in classroom.” More, E.T. (2015).The Environment regardless of any learning situation should be safe and positive and students to become successful. Flexibility is a key characteristic to be an educator understanding that each individual is different and might need your assistance in other ways whether it may be educator, coach, role model, etc.

    Most importantly all children are individuals and should be taught according to their individual learning styles. If you allow the students natural curiosity to lead their voyage to the unknown, they will be most interested in the topic, but it also becomes personal to them. It is important for the students to feel as if they have a say because it is in their best interest of learning. I also believe in varied instruction for different skill levels, by allowing one on one time for the students who are not content where they are at in the class until they are content and thriving. Not only is one on one time just for those who are struggling but those who are excelling and want to continue excelling. This will allow them to reach their full potential. Each child is special and brings something different to the class. All information should be presented not only in a visual and linguistic manner but also kinesthetically, intrapersonal and interpersonal. By giving students the variety of which they obtain the information it gives the students motivation because they did it on their own. Past problems I have encountered in my educational experience is where I have felt judged by the educator when given the wrong answer, asked the wrong question, or just did not simply understand the assignment. Instead of positive reinforcement it was negative making it not a comfortable environment to learn. Similar to the article Code of Ethics,“The professional educator manifests a positive and active role in school/community relations.”Association of American Educators. (2018).  A positive role model makes a difference.

Teaching is both anhonor and a responsibility. As the students’ guide, I believe it is critical to understand their motivations for taking the class and their preferred method of learning. My role is to help students to find questions, not just answers, and to learn new ways of discovering knowledge. After participating in the Education Philosophy Surveymy result came back my highest in progressivism. “Progressivists believe that education should be student-centered, focused on active participation, questioning, and experimentation.” Sadker, M.P. & Sadker, D. S. (1997). I believe this survey has helped me understand my philosophy in teaching.

           Over the years of my educational experience I have had expectational professional educators that made me feel welcomed and comfortable in their classrooms. Professor Lewis and Professor Driggers made their classes very interactive and social. At the beginning of the semester they took a survey of what students likes and dislikes were and incorporating them into activities throughout the semester. Out of all the classes I have taken these two were my favorite. Not only because it was something new every day, but I remember the most information from these classes because of the positive environment. These professors also cared for each individual making sure they were having a good day or if they ever needed assistants our professors were there for us constantly giving us positive reinforcement. Professor Driggers and Professor Lewis are the reason I am here today. They had such a positive impact on my educational experience, it opened my mind to new ideas, thoughts, a place where I can grow being myself, and make a difference. I want to give students the same opportunities these professional educators gave me. An open learning environment free of judgement and positive reinforcement.

           In conclusion, my teaching philosophy is based off progressivism, positive language and reinforcement, and a judge free environment. With the help of the Educational Survey, Code of Ethic, and My Educational Philosophy I am really starting to see the direction of my learning philosophy and how it can grow.
