FILM The Texan in Led Zeppelin
Tumblr media
Documentary tracks British band’s rise, touching on state ties and influences
Two of Led Zeppelin’s members hail from Swinging ’60s London, while the other two come from the Black Country — the sooty region in England’s West Midlands that helped launch the Industrial Revolution.
But look closer at the map and you’ll find Zeppelin’s roots stretch all the way to Texas.
youtube
This month, the long-awaited documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin hits movie theaters across the U.S.
In an era when the Beatles, Elvis and Bob Dylan have been the subject of countless documentaries and biopics, Becoming is the first official doc about the mighty-but-often-maligned Zeppelin.
That’s par for the course for a group that kept the mainstream at arm’s length during its tragically short lifespan.
For the most part, the band refused to do interviews, release singles or appear on television:
There was simply no way a 19-inch TV speaker could reproduce Led Zeppelin’s massive sound.
Becoming traces the band’s formation in late 1968 and its swift ascent to the top.
By 1970, in the wake of its avant-metal hit “Whole Lotta Love,” the band had dethroned the Beatles as the most popular group in the world in a poll by England’s Melody Maker.
Ten years later, the party was over.
Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980 after the alcohol-related death of drummer extraordinaire John Bonham, who’d joined the group at the insistence of singer Robert Plant, his old pal from the Black Country.
Since Bonham’s death, Zeppelin has resisted lucrative offers to do a reunion tour.
The stumbling block is Plant, who refuses to milk nostalgia.
“There’s no going back … I have no desire to be patted on the back by all the old coke dealers who’ve cleaned up since then,” the ever-jocular singer said in 2005 during a keynote interview at South By Southwest in Austin.
Since Becoming Led Zeppelin only skims the surface of the band’s connections to the Lone Star State, here’s a deeper dive into the quartet’s Texas ties — before, during and after its 12-year existence. Texas International
Pop Festival, Aug. 31, 1969
The group famously declined an invitation to play Woodstock — a questionable call by its iron-fisted manager Peter Grant.
But it did blow away a festival crowd two weeks later in Lewisville in a three-day event created by Dallas promoter Angus Wynne III.
The set was captured in a popular bootleg album and is now part of the concert footage featured in Becoming Led Zeppelin.
Three weeks earlier — on Aug. 4, 1969 — the group made its Dallas debut headlining Fair Park Coliseum.
The show was one of more than 100 gigs the quartet played in its first full year of existence.
“It was interesting to see the development of the band … the audience is almost scared because we were playing [a type of rock] they never heard before,” guitarist-bandleader Jimmy Page told me in 2003, discussing concert footage from 1969 for a story in The Dallas Morning News .
After the Texas International Pop Festival, the band played 11 more concerts in Dallas-Fort Worth through 1977, all at the Dallas Memorial Auditorium or Tarrant County Convention Center in Fort Worth.
A photo of bassist John Paul Jones onstage in Fort Worth in ’73 appeared in a reissued version of Houses of the Holy.
T Bone Burnett
The Fort Worth native helped rejuvenate Plant’s career by hand-picking and producing all the songs on Raising Sand , the singer’s 2007 album with Alison Krauss.
“Alison’s one of the most beautiful singers I’ve heard, and Robert’s an incredible singer, too, which people don’t realize,” Burnett told The Dallas Morning News in 2008, shortly after Raising Sand won five Grammys, including album and record of the year.
For Plant, the trophies were a long-overdue validation from the Recording Academy, which had turned up its nose at Led Zeppelin back in the day, just as most critics did.
The group never won a Grammy while it was together, and it earned just one nomination, for best new artist in 1969.
The award went instead to Crosby, Stills and Nash.
Mark Andes and the ‘Stairway’ lawsuit
The Houston-based bassist — a former member of the band Spirit — joined the estate of late Spirit guitarist Randy California in filing a 2014 copyright infringement lawsuit against Led Zeppelin.
Their beef?
youtube
They said Page stole California’s riff from the Spirit song “Taurus” (1968) and turned it into the sad, descending-chord guitar melody of “Stairway to Heaven” (1971).
Andes, who testified in court against Zeppelin, later told an interviewer, “When it’s that obvious … come on, give the guy credit.”
But Zeppelin — which was sometimes slow to credit other sources early in its career — won the suit after its lawyers argued the melody to “Stairway” shared musical DNA with “My Funny Valentine” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee” from Mary Poppins, among other songs.
“That chord sequence has been around forever,” Page said on the witness stand.
Robert Johnson
Before his mysterious death made him an early member of the “27 Club,” the Mississippi singer-guitar wizard (1911-1938) came to Texas to record all 29 songs that make up his discography.
Like many young blues lovers, Plant and Page went gaga over Johnson after his recordings were reissued in the early ’60s.
youtube
They took a particular shine to “Traveling Riverside Blues,” which Johnson cut in 1937 at 508 Park Ave., a three-story Art Deco building in downtown Dallas that miraculously still stands today.
Tumblr media
The band borrowed the infamous citrus-squeezing lyrics in “Traveling” for “The Lemon Song” (1969) and also released its own version of the song on its 1990 box set.
youtube
Page, Plant and company were also influenced by “Terraplane Blues,” which Johnson recorded in San Antonio in 1936.
youtube
Its automotive double entendres paved the way for Zep’s sexy car stomp “Trampled Under Foot.”
youtube
Lead Belly and Deep Ellum
Born just across the Texas border in Louisiana, Huddie Ledbetter (circa 1888-1949) lived in Dallas in the early 1900s, when he and Blind Lemon Jefferson would perform together around Deep Ellum.
In 1939, between several prison sentences, Lead Belly recorded “Gallows Pole,” a traditional lament about trying to outrun the hangman.
youtube
Zeppelin loved Leadbelly’s high-spirited version so much they cut a raucous, banjo-laden take on “Gallows Pole” for Led Zeppelin III , the folky 1970 album that finally proved they could do more than headbang.
Years later, Plant chose to perform in Deep Ellum at the Gypsy Tea Room (2005) and the Factory (2016), where he told fans how much he loved the neighborhood and Dallas blues history.
Blind Willie Johnson
Though not as well-known as Robert Johnson or Blind Lemon Jefferson, singer-preacher Blind Willie Johnson (1897-1945) had an outsize impact on Zeppelin.
You can hear traces of his jagged slide guitar style in Page’s playing, while his demonic growl left a big impression on Plant.
Tumblr media
Johnson lived most of his short life in tiny Marlin, near Waco.
But in 1927, he traveled to an unknown location in Dallas to record “In My Time of Dying” (also called “Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed”), which Zeppelin transformed into a volcanic 11-minute prog-blues jam on Physical Graffiti .
youtube
youtube
A year later, during sessions for Presence (1976), they circled back to the Johnson songbook for “Nobody’s Fault but Mine,” featuring Plant’s best harmonica solo.
youtube
While Zep didn’t cover “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground,” extraterrestrials may one day hum along to it.
Johnson’s eerie ballad, recorded in Dallas, was included on the Voyager Golden Record, a time capsule that’s been floating through space since 1977.
‘Rambling on’ to Austin
Plant — a self-described “drifter with a silver spoon” — lived in Austin for several years in the early 2010s while dating Texas-based singer Patty Griffin, who performed on his 2010 album Band Of Joy.
“Patty Griffin … is the most remarkable songwriter,” he told the Phoenix New Times in 2018.
Tumblr media
“The probing qualities of her songs are phenomenal.”
Tumblr media
In 2017, the group Keep Austin Weird, Not Racist, launched a petition to rename Robert E. Lee Road after Plant (it was eventually renamed Azie Morton Road, after the first Black U.S. treasurer).
But by then, Plant and Griffin had split up, and he’d moved back to the United Kingdom.
He told Dan Rather on The Big Interview that he would always love Austin for its “Tex-Mex rock ’n’ roll attitude.”
But he admitted he had a hard time dealing with the heat.
“I could never have been a Texan … it was too late down the line.”

Angus T. JonesJones was best known as the son of Jon Cryer's sadsack divorcé (and nephew of Charlie Sheen's playboy songwriter) on the '00s hit sitcom Two and a Half Men. In 2012, a video of Jones trashing the comedy, calling it "filth," surfaced online. The footage was from a 15-minute religious testimonial for Forerunner Chronicles, an Alabama-based Seventh-day Adventist ministry. Jones later apologized for "showing indifference to and disrespect of my colleagues and a lack of appreciation of the extraordinary opportunity of which I have been blessed." The actor soon left the series, but returned for the finale in 2015. Jones, who earned a reported $350,000 per episode during his final season as a full-time cast member on the CBS sitcom, told Houston TV station KHOU that the show "was making light of topics in our world that are really problems for a lot of people, and I was a paid hypocrite because I wasn't okay with it, but I was still doing it." Until an uncredited 2023 notch on his IMDb from the Max series Bookie, his last acting credit was Louis C.K.'s 2016 limited series Horace & Pete. Jones attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, living what he called a "normal existence," he told People in 2016. "I got pretty doomsday with my thinking for a long time, but now I'm having fun and enjoying where I'm at," he added. Jim Morris never made it out of the minor leagues before a shoulder injury ended his pitching career twelve years ago. Now a married-with-children high-school chemistry teacher and baseball coach in Texas, Jim’s team makes a deal with him: if they win the district championship, Jim will try out with a major-league organization. The bet proves incentive enough for the team, and they go from worst to first, making it to state for the first time in the history of the school. Jim, forced to live up to his end of the deal, is nearly laughed off the try-out field–until he gets onto the mound, where he confounds the scouts (and himself) by clocking successive 98 mph fastballs, good enough for a minor-league contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Jim’s still got a lot of pitches to throw before he makes it to The Show, but with his big-league dreams revived, there’s no telling where he could go. Credits: TheMovieDb. Film Cast: Jimmy Morris: Dennis Quaid Lorri Morris: Rachel Griffiths Joaquin ‘Wack’ Campos: Jay Hernandez Olline: Beth Grant Hunter Morris: Angus T. Jones Jim Morris Sr.: Brian Cox Rudy Bonilla: Rick Gonzalez Joe David West: Chad Lindberg Joel De La Garza: Angelo Spizzirri Henry: Royce D. Applegate Brooks: Russell Richardson Frank: Raynor Scheine Catcher: Chris Sheffield Orlando Manager: Brandon Smith Film Crew: Casting: Ronna Kress Director of Photography: John Schwartzman Music: Carter Burwell Producer: Mark Johnson Executive Producer: Philip Steuer Writer: Mike Rich Production Design: Barry Robison Editor: Eric L. Beason Costume Design: Bruce Finlayson Director: John Lee Hancock Producer: Mark Ciardi Producer: Gordon Gray Music Supervisor: John Bissell Movie Reviews: r96sk: A cracking sports drama about the career of Jim Morris. Absolutely loved this, the 127 minute run time flew by real quick; thoroughly enjoyable. It portrays, with extra drama I’m sure, the events of Morris’ real life baseball career in a fantastic way. There’s great character development right from the get-go, by the conclusion I was utterly invested in Morris. He is played by Dennis Quaid, who is superb in the role. I felt every emotion of his character, best I’ve (currently) seen of Quaid so far. The film does a great job at making you care for not only him, but even his high school team. Speaking of which, they did a terrific job with the casting of those guys – I felt like I was watching a bunch of real teammates; Chad Lindberg, of ‘The Fast and the Furious’, is one of them. Even away from Quaid and Lindberg & Co., you still have Morris’ family to feel for as well. There’s many characters to get attached to, but I was very interested in all of them. Fantastic stuff, I’d highly recommend you watch ‘The Rookie’.

Angus T. Jones: How Chuck Lorre Got Him OUT of Retirement! (Exclusive)
Angus T. Jones is back on TV, for now! The 30-year-old actor, who retired in 2014, returned to his roots on Max's 'Bookie' for a special cameo. The gig featured Angus playing poker in a scene alongside his 'Two and a Half Men' co-star, Charlie Sheen, for creator Chuck Lorre's latest series, which premiered Nov. 30. Lorre tells ET's Deidre Behar how he pulled off Angus' surprise appearance, and if he thinks the role may get the former child star out of retirement. Plus, Lorre weighs in on the possibility of fellow 'Two and a Half Men' alums Jon Cryer and Ashton Kutcher also showing up on 'Bookie.'

Sitcom titan Chuck Lorre is opening up about the decision to bring his two remaining CBS comedies — Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola — to a close in 2024.
During an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast, Lorre first reflects on the “natural lifespan” of the Big Bang Theory prequel, which is ending after Season 7 (which will consist of just 14 episodes).
“The story of this extraordinary prodigy in a small town outside of Houston, in a family where he is very much a fish out of water — that story we’ve kind of told, and the remainder of his path leading up to The Big Bang Theory happens at CalTech, in California,” Lorre explains. “Seven years… seems like the natural lifespan of [Young Sheldon], and that was a feeling that was shared between myself and both [series co-creator/executive producer] Steve Molaro and [fellow EP] Steve Holland, who have been instrumental in keeping this thing as extraordinary as it has been.”
Lorre seems less at peace with CBS’ choice to end Bob Hearts Abishola after Season 5.
“I think there are so many more stories to tell,” he says. “The initial motivation for that [show] was a romance wrapped around a story of immigrants who make America great — that extraordinary, courageous effort that is made by millions of people every year who find their way in this country. I don’t necessarily feel like we were done, but that was not my call.”
Acknowledging the news that 11 out of 13 series regulars were bumped to recurring for the final 13 episodes, Lorre explains, “There were fiscal restraints imposed on the show. In order to continue making the show, the cost of making it had to be reined in, and that was the only way to do that.
“It’s not my call,” the EP reiterates. “I’m really grateful for the run that we’ve had. Five years has been terrific.”
With both Sheldon and Abishola ending this spring, Lorre is poised to head into the 2024-25 broadcast season without a show on CBS for the first time since Two and Half Men debuted in 2003. Earlier this week, he launched the new Max comedy Bookie with an assist from former Men stars Charlie Sheen and Angus T. Jones.
