The History of Space Piracy
An essay by Squeak
Ah 2007, a time when the Ratchet and Clank franchise was still in its prime and launching its new future series with the release of its first game Future: Tools of Destruction. With that release came a cast of new characters who would become either beloved or forgotten.
Amongst those characters were the space pirates. The space pirates were at first designed to be one of the many antagonists Ratchet faced throughout the game, but over time their popularity increased, which prompted Insomniac to develop and release a new game centering around them titled Quest for Booty. This game, a small sequel to F:TOD, expanded on their lore and introduced new elements to their story.
Though it never covered the entireity of their timeline. So, just what is the story behind the pirates? Well curious reader, I will be attempting to explain just that, but it will be up to you if you believe my version of events or not.
According to the Ratchet and Clank Wikia the space pirates were constructed by Percival Tachyon with the purpose of helping him build his Imperial army. Though the beginning is where things become most confusing because the order of their creation is unclear.
The wikia states that “One of the earliest space pirate captains was Julius MacGuffin from the Andromeda System”. Which, in a way, clashes with their earlier claim of all pirates being made by Percival Tachyon since it has never been canonically stated that Tachyon has ever resided in or visited that system that I know of.
That leaves us with a question: In what order did Tachyon create them then? Well to possibly find out we must look at the pirate hierarchy but not include Julius at first. Throughout their run the pirates have had three captains in total. Blackstar, Angstrom Darkwater, Romulus Slag, and a potential new captain in Rusty Pete as he was Romulus’ first mate. (We will ignore their rules for hostile takeovers for now.)
Each pirate that has come into power seems to have been designed differently from the rest of the crew. This can clearly be seen in Captain Blackstar, Angstrom Darkwater, Romulus Slag, and even Rusty Pete. Meanwhile the rest of the crew, while differing in design when it comes to specific jobs, are not as uniquely crafted. So what does this mean?
It means that they were probably the original space pirates Tachyon had built all those years ago while the rest were manufactured after the betrayal. So lets take a look at each of their designs. Blackstar, when comparing him to his brethren, looks more incomplete. This suggests that he could've possibly been the first pirate Tachyon ever created, a prototype meant to help him figure out what exactly he wanted to do with them.
Next there’s Darkwater and Rusty Pete. Both machines seem to be very similar in body structure which suggests Tachyon could've created them together. Because if we move up the list there’s Slag, who’s entire structure radically differs from the other two. It seems unlikely Tachyon would've created one slim machine and one heavier machine, then go right back to producing a slimmer machine. Especially considering how many materials would be needed to construct Slag alone. It makes more sense that he would construct the two slimmer models together while plenty of materials are still available.
Finally we come our Scourge of the Galaxy Romulus. Already it’s apparent Slag is a bit more fortified than his brethren since he possesses defenses the other pirates do not seem to have. His hook is capable of not only turning into a variety of weapons but it is also capable of firing crescent shaped missiles that follow an opponent until impact (I will not be including the grog mechanic yet as it does not apply here). This is incredibly advanced and suggests that Tachyon put more time and energy into Romulus than any other pirate, which leads me to believe that he was the last one in the series.
So what about Julius? It is canonically stated he was more than a plot device, he was a beloved part of the crew who had his own memorial according to Rusty Pete. And while we don't ever get to see him in person I do believe he was one of the originals. In fact I theorize that he might've come after Blackstar as the first true model in the series. Though I cannot be confident in my idea as we never have and never will learn anything more about Julius.
Whew. That was a lot. So in conclusion I theorize that the order of the pirates is as follows: Blackstar, Julius MacGuffin, Angstrom Darkwater + Rusty Pete, and finally Romulus Slag. I would go on to discuss what possibly took place after Tachyon’s betrayal but this has gotten long enough. So there will be a part two diving into that at a later time.
Thank you for reading! Please don't be afraid to let me know if I’ve gotten anything wrong.

A bunch of doodles and studies of Angstrom. I have so many studies of his face, because I never feel happy with the way I draw it. I mean literal pages of the stuff in my sketch book. This man drives me nuts TT w TT but I love him.

I feel like, when Darkwater first befriended Orvus, nobody in the crew believed him.
They didn't believe the Zoni existed, they didn't believe the stories Angstrom was telling them, and no matter what he did he couldn't change their minds. They would only discover the truth years later after his death.

I just noticed something
Darkwater and Slag are both equally vain. Like sure Romulus is more vocal with his vanity but you can just tell with how Angstrom acts he’s got a high opinion of himself too.
This sorta makes me wonder..were all of the pirate captains like this? Did they pick up this trait from Tachyon during their time with him? It sort of seems like it.
