One of my favorite DBDA scenes is when Charles toss the Night Nurse of the cliff right into the angler fish mouth. There's that terribly epic music and Charles rage is finally released. And the complementary colours: the orangy/red Night Nurse and the blue/teal water and angler fish.

Probably my FAVOURITE scene.

I love this show, is a real pity that's been cancelled! I'm so sad and angry about it!

I'm at my fourth rewatch. What about you?

The Dead Boy Detectives (and crew), have been occupying my thoughts the past few weeks. I’ve watched the show on repeat, rewatched Sandman, actually started reading the Sandman graphic novels (currently on Seasons of Mist, the introduction of the Dead Boys), and I’ve started drawing the episodes in the style of old teen detective novels.

I started these before getting super into behind the scenes details. I went down a bit of a rabbit-hole last night, and was delighted to learn that show-runner Steve Yockey wanted the show to be reminiscent of The Hardy Boys, one of the main influences of these covers.

The accuracy of their depictions varies, I don’t think they always really look like themselves. But I had a lot of fun.

I hope to continue designing these for a bit while the obsession holds, and maybe I can properly bring in purples, Crystal’s hero color.

Anyone else think there's more to the gift shop lady than meets the eye?

She gives them information about Lilith and the Washer Woman, both of whom are key to solving future issues.

She painted the Washer Woman and included the inscription that taught them how to find her. ((I think she painted Lilith too?? Whoever did got the visual exactly right, too, so it must have been someone who actually saw her.))

She told Niko how to contact Lilith, which helped Crystal save Edwin. She also told her that Lilith is more likely to respond to witches.

She points them towards mermaids/sirens with the lighthouse leapers. Angie is a giant angler fish, but she uses the sound of someone you love to lure you in more than the light.

I'm not discounting Niko's expert sleuthing, it's just interesting to me that this one lady is responsible for so many important revelations and leads.

a mild crackfic and/or actual-serious-fic idea/headcanon i just had that i feel the need to share with the masses:

so, i know this a small community of people intrigued by the idea of the cat king and tragic mick, which is lovely and i am behind you all wholeheartedly. but also. i raise you: tragic mick and kashi.

just consider it. for a few seconds, or a few minutes, or a few hours. sit down and think about it with me. it can be platonic or romantic or whatever the fuck, but just think about them meeting. interacting with each other.

because—in a way, it makes sense, doesn't it? mick is a (possibly immortal? though that's more of a personal headcanon for me) walrus-turned-man that longs to become a walrus again and return to his brothers and sisters in the ocean, and kashi is an immortal incessantly optimistic man who lives inside a giant man-eating angler fish monster at the bottom of the ocean. and mick seems awfully familiar with angie, doesn't he?

walruses don't live off the coast of new york; they live up in the arctic and sub-arctic areas way up north. mick as a man lives in port townsend NOW, but he had to get there somehow. maybe he spent a lot of time traveling the world as a sailor, as close to the sea as he could get now, procuring magical objects in an attempt to find something that could turn him into a walrus again, and eventually wound up in port townsend. maybe he came during a storm, and angie woke up. maybe mick, if he IS immortal, became one of her victims; maybe he heard the voices of his brothers and sisters calling him back to the sea, or the voice of sedna saying she'd forgiven him and wanted him to come back, or maybe just the voice of the sea itself. maybe he woke up inside angie and met kashi there, and kashi had angie take him back to the surface later like he did for the night nurse.

maybe mick got some counsel from kashi, while he was in angie's stomach. maybe kashi helped him to see a light side to his human existence, or at least convinced him to settle down in port townsend. maybe mick wasn't mad at angie for eating him; she was just hungry, like the sea, and like sedna. she was just doing what her instincts told her to do. maybe that was when mick started to call her angie. maybe kashi gave him one of his rings, or something else from the collection of trinkets in angie's stomach.

"will this turn me back into a walrus?"

"sadly, no. but it's still nice, isn't it?"

👻what is your wildest headcannon?

Right now I'm really into Dead Boy Detectives. The main ship is fine, but young for me. I have this ridiculous headcannon about two side characters - one is Mick, a walrus who got turned into a man but yearns for the sea. The other is a giant Angler Fish named Angie, who lures people into the water by projecting a sense of longing and they fill in the blanks. Oh and an immortal man lives in her stomach. They don't even interact in the canon, I just think there's potential in their relationship. ☺️

💘 Would you rather write angst or fluff?

Fluff comes easier to me. Most of my writing tends to be fluff or gratuitous smut. But if the story calls for angst I will oblige.

They' re both angler fish and totally in love with each other but too embarrassed to admit it

I don't really have a story for them but I imagine in angler fish... Society, I guess?? They're both outcasts cause she's smaller than the average female angler fish and he's bigger than the average male. (Also, if you didn't know, female angler fish are the ones with the lights and males are just these tiny little guys! Which is why I like to think he's itty bitty compared to her (like he's 5 foot something and she's over 6 feet))

1) who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter see you’d think that chiduko is the teasing werewolf and hitomi is the stone-cold hunter (and you’d be correct!), BUT! consider feral hitomi and chiduko on the chase. consider it. you know you want to. 2) who’s the mermaid and who’s the angler mermaid chiduko my love... also angy fisherwoman hitomi. women want her, fish fear her. merm chiduko doesn’t know a lot about humans (or personal space) and hitomi is not a great example of the species as a whole, but who is, really? 3) who’s the witch and who’s the familiar I feel like it’s the obvious answer here but I just. I want witchy chiduko forming a pact with the devil. that’s where her birthmark comes from! I’m a genius. also demon!hitomi as her familiar... oh my. yes please. 4) who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict hitomi strikes me as the sort of person who either doesn’t drink coffee at all or drinks a LOT. I think she’s the coffee addict for this one, and I think chiduko is the barista who learns her usual order pretty much instantly. I don’t imagine it takes much though, since it feels likely to me that hitomi likes her coffee black or near enough to it. I do not drink coffee. 5) who’s the professor and who’s the TA I don’t think either of them have the skillset for this tbh. that said, if I absolutely had to pick, I’d say hitomi professor and chiduko teacher’s assistant. chiduko would try and make everything cute and personal and be far too nosy with both the students and the professor. it’s a good thing she’s endearing, huh? 6) who’s the knight and who’s the princess there’s an obvious answer, and then there’s the less obvious answer. the obvious answer is hitomi knight chiduko princess, with chiduko making her knight do all sorts of things for her bc hitomi can’t refuse. the less obvious answer is chiduko playful knight and hitomi tomboyish princess who taught herself weapon skills and insists that her personal knight let her deal with things. basically, chiduko is bad at her job (but it’s on purpose bc gay) and hitomi tries to fight everyone even though she’s not supposed to. basically canon, right? 7) who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent hitomi doesn’t actually want kids herself, but she couldn’t resist becoming a martial arts instructor to teach them how to defend themselves like she did when she was in school. I was trying to think about single parent chiduko and had the thought “mikoto was her ex-wife” which is HILARIOUS to me. I think chiduko was heartbroken bc mikoto grew disillusioned with her and her little ‘personal habits’ and demanded a divorce, so hitomi is kind of a rebound but also like. the good kind. the kind who opens up eventually and loves her completely. 8) who’s the writer and who’s the editor again idk that they have the skillset for this but I’ll bite. hitomi wants to write cool fight scenes, and she’s got the technical knowledge of those parts down, but the leadup and fallout need a LOT of work on pacing, dialogue, setting... the list goes on. chiduko takes quite a few artistic liberties with fixing these parts. ALTERNATIVELY chiduko is very much “the ideas guy” with veeeery sloppy actual writing which hitomi takes great pains to clean up. send me a ship ! also, feel free to ask me to elaborate more on headcanons for these!
