His  brow  furrows  briefly,  and  he  grimaces  and  tosses  the  book  aside  and  picks  up  another,  and  starts  flipping  through  it,  though  he  chances  a  look  to  her  with  a  look  that’s  hard  to  interpret.  “  Don’t  worry,  darling.  Won’t  be  asking  you  to  get  your  hands  dirty.  ”  This  book  apparently  is  a  little  more  promising;  an  expression  of  acceptance  briefly  comes  and  goes,  and  he  tucks  the  book  into  his  coat. 

“  You  can  hear  them  whenever  you  want?  You  don’t  have  to  be  struck  by  lightning  or  dance  on  one  foot  or  —  ”  he  waves  a  hand  vaguely  in  a  mildly  impatient  way.  “  —  point  is,  we  get  this  done  fast  or  else  we  have  both  sides  up  our  fabulous,  mildly  complaining  asses.  So.  If  you’re  going  to  need  to  do  any  tuning,  best  do  it  before.  ”

HE'S PERCEPTIVE. It's not like he misses her distress, her discomfort, her reluctance. And, maybe, he even understands to a degree, and maybe somewhere deep that little twisted mangled piece of what's left of his soul feels some weak twinge of guilt. But, mostly: he regards her blandly, and the smile that comes after is small, tight, and far more diplomatic than empathetic or reassuring. What doesn't kill you, right?

" There's something I need to get. Trust me. You don't want it in Heaven's hands, not if you want to live to see the end of this fantastic little adventure. All they need is more juice for their smite machine. They're moving it, and I need to know where and when so I can — retrieve it. "

He's not unreasonable. There has to be a balance between Heaven and Hell — one wouldn't exist without the other, and he knows this. The scales tipped in either direction can be catastrophic — apocalyptic — and, as it turns out? He likes surviving. He has no intention of killing her, or even really putting her in significant harm's way, because — bluntly, well. She's useful.

He's not made for kindness. Maybe once as a human he had more capacity for it, but it was carved and burned and squeezed out of him until all that was left was cunning and survival. So: no, he's not made for kindness, but he is perceptive. There's a slim, tight smile, and he regards her with a tip of his head, considering. " Make me a deal," he says at last. " You know. Little bit of something. Say. You do this for me. Get me the information I need to know. I, " he says, with a little incline of his brows, " can make it not hurt. "

His words manage to get a weak smile out of her. Merely a twitch, really. Even if this is not a situation she should be smiling in, or a person (creature) she should be smiling at. But, right now, said person is ironically her safest bet. Heaven wants her dead. Hell wants to use her. And, from a lack of an even safer third choice (does she even have a choice?), she's gone for the one where she gets to live another day.

At least this guy doesn't have her tied up somewhere, and he hasn't… mistreated her exactly. He's a middle between those two. For now. He could switch up on her -- who knows? He is a demon.

She lifts weary eyes from the table she'd zone out on and sets them on his face, sort of listening but not really until the last sentence. 'If you're gonna need to do any tuning'. She never stops. The voices are always in the back of her head, buzzing, growing louder and louder -- conversations, going on at the same time. She can't fully tune them out. She just chooses not to focus, sometimes. Keep them illegible to ease the headaches. The pain. The stress. It's all she can do. "I- " she starts off, licking her lips. "… i … could…" The 'do i really have to?' is unspoken, and she lets her facial expression do the job for her -- her eyes basically begging 'please don't make me'. "What do you wanna know? " aka, 'what should i keep my ear out for? '.
