June Reading and Reviews by Maia Kobabe
I post my reviews throughout the month on Storygraph and Goodreads, and do roundups here and on patreon. Reviews below the cut.
A First Time For Everything by Dan Santat
A beautifully illustrated memoir of a shy, Asian American thirteen year old's first trip to Europe, in 1989. Dan is a painfully self-conscious kid, bullied at school despite his best efforts to slip invisibly through the school halls. But on a three week summer trips with a dozen other kids his age, some from his school and some from other states, he begins to find himself. This story is framed through a series of "firsts"- first time traveling without his parents, first time tasting Fanta, first cigarette, first alcoholic drink, first time navigating a city alone, first kiss, first time sharing his art with someone. The main narrative of the trip is woven through with flashbacks to particularly emotional past moments- asking a girl out, being romantically rejected, rejecting someone else, helping a girl out who had gotten her period unexpectedly. It captures the wretchedness of junior high, and the way traveling can teach people both about the world and themselves.
Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning by Cathy Park Hong
An impactful series of essays that circles around the meaning of "Asian American" sometimes in very broad strokes, sometimes narrowing to the author's specific experience as a bilingual Korean American writer who grew up in the Los Angeles area in the 80s and 90s. I really appreciated the mix of memoir and history, research and cultural critique. Topics range from therapy, the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, racism in academia, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, stand up comedy, the 1992 LA riots, the way childhood is not allowed equally to white and POC kids, the film Moonrise Kingdom and the 1965 Civil Rights movement, shame, deconstructing the English language in poetry, the 2012 documentary Wildness about a trans bar scene in LA, intense female friendships in art school, the poet Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's life and death, activist Yuri Kochiyama, and what debt, if any, an Asian American writer and thinker owes to America. This is a book I can see myself re-reading in a couple years, and getting more from it on a second read; it's rich with quotes and references to other writers, artists and thinkers who have informed Hong's thoughts. Definitely recommend.
In Limbo by Deb JJ Lee
I'm not going to give this book a star rating, because it deals with some extremely heavy topics I have no experience with (multiple suicide attempts, physical abuse of a child by a parent). This memoir covers four years of the main character's life, all of high school. Korean American Jung Jin, who goes by Deborah or Deb at school, made most of her friends in orchestra in junior high. But in high school she falls out of love with violin and quits music to focus more time and energy into drawing. She floats through school, feeling disconnected from peers and family, especially her mother, who swings from supportive to volatile. Another main theme is friendship- a solid, long-term friendship which Deb neglects, and a shorter, intense friendship that consumes Deb's emotional world until it falls apart. This is a story of quiet survival, of incremental steps towards healing, balance, and self actualization. Like life, it is somewhat loose in structure, but the illustrations are stunning.
The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings read by Angel Pean
Set in a world similar to but one step sideways from our current world, this story follows Jo, a creative, biracial, bisexual woman trapped by the restrictions of her society. In this US, women are under constant suspicion of witchcraft, a crime that can still be punish by public burnings. Women who aren't married by 30 are especially suspected, and have to check in with a counselor bi-weekly, and risk losing their jobs, freedom, and ability to have their own bank accounts or own property. Jo is 28, and while she is causally dating, she has no interest in marriage. She has a hard time believing that love can even exist under the pressures placed on women. It doesn't help that her mother disappeared when Jo was 14, and during the investigation, she was questioned by witch hunters. It's been 7 years and Jo's father decides it's finally time to declare Jo's mom officially dead. This ends up opening up a clause in her will that requests Jo travel to a island in the middle of one of the Great Lakes on a very specific day in autumn and collect a certain fruit that only grows there... This book is so skillfully written, for the first half I was left wondering if magic really did or did not exist; it could just be the excuse that men used to oppress women, queer people, and people of color. But then the book takes a really Kelly Link or Octavia Butler-like twist in the middle and gets weirder and wilder. Highly recommend, especially the audiobook.
How A Mountain Was Made: Stories by Greg Sarris
A collection of short stories by long time Chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, Greg Sarris; a writer I've been hearing about for years and am finally sitting down to read! These stories are all set around the Sonoma Mountain and Cotati, very close to where I grew up, and I loved being able to picture the foggy mornings, the many oaks, the quail, poppies, lupine, hawks, coyotes, and creeks in these stories. The book has a frame narrative of two crow sisters, Question Woman and Answer Woman, who introduce each story and also appear as characters in one. The stories are interwoven, nearly all set in the village by Copeland Creek where Coyote lives as headman with his wife Frog, his cousin Chicken Hawk, and his many neighbors. The stories use a lot of the kind of repetitive language that lends itself to memorization; I honestly didn't feel like sitting down and reading the book cover to cover wasn't the best way to experience them. It might have been better to flip the book open to a random story and read whichever one caught my eye, especially to read it out loud, either to myself or to a young listener. Maybe I'll get an opportunity to read it that way sometime to a nibling.
The Two Doctors Gorski by Isaac Fellman read by Helen Laser
Annae is a PhD student, a brilliant researcher, and a survivor of academic abuse. She is forced to leave the US when her former mentor claims her research and ruins her name (after sleeping with her). They work in a small field, advanced magic so complex it feels almost more like science, so Annae transfers to a university in the UK to complete her degree. There she finds herself in a cohort of entirely male graduate students under a famous but cruel teacher. Her main defense mechanism and invasive habit is reading minds, a kind of compulsive act that lets her see how her peers view her, and themselves. Unsurprisingly, these insights bring her no peace; Annae tries to rebuild her research, but urge to fall into the same traps as her role models is strong. This is a novella, only about 4 hours as an audiobook, and fairly open ended but I'm still thinking about it.
The Wolf at the Door by Charlie Adhara read by Erik Bloomquist
In this contemporary murder mystery/romance novel, werewolves exist and have always lived in small numbers around the world. A few years before this story starts werewolves outed themselves to the US government in order to better liaison with law enforcement to address werewolf-human crimes, but the general public still does not know werewolves exist. Cooper Dayton survived a werewolf attack, and is subsequently transferred from his former job at the FBI into the BSI, the Bureau of Special Investigation. When two bodies turn up in the woods in rural Maine, Agent Dayton is chosen for a trial program, and he is paired up with an agent from The Trust, the werewolf government. Dayton is attracted to his new partner, Agent Park, immediately- but when it turns out Park's family is active in the area of the murder, Dayton realizes he can't rule out the possibility that his co-worker might be actively covering for the criminal. This book starts an enjoyable paranormal romance series complete with plenty of spice but also very solid procedural mysteries. I was glad to be able to guess some parts of, but not all of, the mystery as it unfolded and I also thought the romance novel beats hit well!
The Wolf at Bay by Charlie Adhara read by Erik Bloomquist
At the start of this second installment in my new favorite paranormal romance/murder mystery series, Agent Cooper Dayton and Agent Oliver Park of the Bureau of Special Investigations have been sleeping together for 4 months but still have not defined their relationship. Some of their miscommunications stem from cultural misunderstandings, but more of it comes from them both being too gun shy to be the first one to say "I love you." Meanwhile, Cooper takes Oliver to meet his family in the small town of coastal Maryland where he grew up- introducing Oliver only as his partner at work, because Cooper's family don't know he is gay and also don't know werewolves exist. Then a 25 year old skeleton is uncovered on the Dayton family property, and Cooper and Oliver have to set aside their other issues to solve the cold case, which might implicate one or both of Cooper's parents. A very enjoyable second book which manages to avoid a lot of the things that often bug me in romance novels and develops the relationship in satisfying ways.
The Mermaid, The Witch and The Sea by Megan Tokuda-Hall
Evelyn, the closeted lesbian teen daughter of nobles in an oppressive and strict empire, sets to sea aboard the Dove on a six month voyage to meet the husband her parents have chosen for her. On the Dove she meets Florian, a sailor her own age she who she befriends despite his lack of education and rough manners. But what Evelyn doesn't know is that Florian is also Flora, an orphan who joined the crew out of desperation and killed a man in cold blood to earn her place. And also- the ship is crewed by pirates, who plan to take all of the passengers as slaves. They have also committed a crime against the very sea itself: the capture of a mermaid with intent to sell it's blood, which men drink to forget. This is a dangerous and violent world, but the connection between Evelyn, Florian/Flora and the mermaid might be enough to save them all, with the help of some cleverness, bravery, magic, and love. This book had some tonal shifts that I struggled with, but I deeply appreciated the multifaceted queer rep.
Thrown to The Wolves by Charlie Adhara read by Erik Bloomquist
The third book in the werewolf/detective romance series I've been wolfing down on audiobook. In this installment, Cooper Dayton, human BSI agent, is still heaving from the wounds of his previous case when Oliver Park, werewolf BSI agent, learns that his grandfather and head of the pack he abandoned several years ago died. Oliver asks Cooper to come with him to the funeral, and Cooper agrees, having no idea what he's getting into. The couple narrowly avoids a deadly car-crash on the way up to the family mansion in Canada, where Cooper learns that even though Oliver's family is fine with him being gay they are not really fine with him dating a human. Several of Oliver's relatives very explicitly try to scare Cooper off, then he's shot with a tranquilizer in what may or may not be an accident, then it turns out that Oliver's grandfather might not have died of natural causes. Amongst all this chaos, will Cooper decide the wolf world is just too much and that he needs to back away from it? Or will be just dive in even deeper? Even though I could easily guess the answer, I am still very hooked and will definitely read more!
Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
Seraphina is the assistant composer to the royal family of Goredd, which means she lives in the castle and spends her days auditioning new musicians, leading rehearsals, performing at state functions and giving the vivacious, whip smart, slightly spoiled princess her weekly harpsichord lessons. In two weeks, the most important dragon general will be visiting the capital city to celebrate the 40 year anniversary of the peace treaty between humans and dragons which he negotiated with the current human queen. But then one of the members of the royal family is killed, and some people start pointing the finger at dragons; tensions begin to rise in the city as anti-dragon mobs attack a young dragon traveling the city in his human form. Amidst this tension, Seraphina is even more desperate to keep her longest and darkest secret: that she is half dragon, and carries hidden scales, maternal dragon memories, and a mental link with other powerful beings. This was such an original take on a dragon fantasy, with a rich and complex world, characters that I immediately cared for and rooted for. I'm definitely going to keep reading this series!
Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing by Charlie Adhara read by Erik Bloomquist
Human boyfriend Cooper Dayton and his werewolf boyfriend Oliver Park are trying to buy a house together; but their aesthetic sense of what makes an inviting home is vastly different, and neither of them are communicating their needs well to the other. How convenient that their next case for The Trust, the werewolf government, involves them going undercover to a couple's retreat where they will investigate a missing person report while also doing bonding exercises and couple's therapy. Will Cooper finally acknowledge that he was PTSD? Will Park admit their massive family wealth disparity could be a source of tension between them? Will they manage to figure out the link between a threatening park ranger, a local lumber mill owner who wants to buy the land the wolf retreat is built on, not one but two missing employees, the mysterious research of a wolf scientist (who may have experimented on his own children), a wolf pack leader showing up at the retreat unexpectedly? This installment continues the development of the central relationship while also fleshing out the lore and intricacies of the wolf world.

your humble anon back to praise you for those casting choices!! rebecca demornay the absolute beauty!! and phoebe cates is so so perfect! please know i am cheering you on from the sidelines waiting to give you the kudos you so rightfully deserve. (and if you feel like sharing headcanons, i would love to hear about them! also, you mentioned being inspired by hacks so is miguel the ava to johnny's deborah? or is he just the catalyst to johnny's reemerging career? it's all so interesting however i can be patient i promise!!)
anoooon, thank you so much you are making my absolute DAY!! my response is super long so i’ll put it under a cut.
i am not very far in hacks so as of right now ava and deborah’s relationship is… tumultuous to say the least. i will admit, yes, miguel would be johnny’s ava in this context. they don’t have the same arc at all or the same bond but miguel is sort of this door for johnny into the modern world and all it includes.
in my mind, after his fall from grace (and i will get into that), johnny becomes a bit of a recluse. she moves from the heart of LA to a much more secluded place where she does what canon johnny does at the start of cobra kai, she works for a fixing company and makes very little money doing gigs. she doesn’t live from acting at all, she barely gets royalties and she doesn’t have ANY contact with her old friends and costars. miguel moves in her building where she has never been recognized before. in opposition to the face claims i gave, this johnny has gotten a bit more masc and butch in her older age and people wouldn’t immediately associate her now to the image of America’s Sweetheart Joanna Lawrence who was once in every magazine and was a double sided poster (on one side, johnny with her teased to hell blond hair, posing in roller skates with neon shorts and a shirt that says LOS ANGELES, on the other side, johnny at the beach, playing volleyball in a red bikini. she was everyone’s crush, she was THE sitcom it girl) but miguel does recognise her because he and rosa watch a lot of reruns from the 80´s comedy show she and danielle were in and he tries to befriend her for an autograph.
in doing so, miguel explains to johnny that a lot of people would pay a nice amount of money for autographs, for interviews, anything from this actress that disappeared from the public’s eye. the show back then was extremely popular and the 80´s nostalgia has hit america. johnny, for money but also to prove herself she can be more than what the world has told her, tries to reboot the show as an actress and writer (with miguel’s help) and that is when her path crosses danielle’s once again.
as for johnny’s downfall, there were rumors of alcohol (true), drugs (true), homosexuality (true) and her sleeping her way to the top (untrue and that’s why she was blacklisted for so long). she was arrested at 25 years old for crashing her car inside her manager’s house. it was seen as a coke fuelled accident (but in truth, johnny might have tried to murder kreese) and it completely burned her reputation.
miguel, robby and sam are all around 21/22 here because i admit getting a bit tired of writing high school experiences and also because i love the idea of johnny with a team of writers who are all so young and so social media trained that they have to block her out of twitter so she doesn’t get canceled before she can get back into the spotlight. aisha and tory will also make an appearance (and maybe the binary brothers as well).
danielle, as stated in my first post, is an A list celebrity (think kind of meryl streep ish in terms of legend BUT she hasn’t been filming in a long while). since miyagi’s death, danielle has had a hard time getting back onto the saddle of acting, motherhood is also extremely hard when you’re stuck in an heterosexual marriage as a lesbian, your daughter has fallen into some bad crowds and your son would sell pictures of you to TMZ for fortnite skins if you weren’t already paying for everything. she has been thinking of directing more and more (she has refused to do too much to her face and body apart from some hair dyes and a little botox which means that even if she did want to film, she won’t find a good role) and she has the ambition of maybe rebooting this 80´s comedy show she was once a part of but as a lead and director this time so when she learns that johnny is already on the case, she loses her mind a little.
i feel like im already giving quite a bit away here but im actually very excited to get into writing this!!!
thank you again, anon!!! you’re loooovely

Them: The Scare
If you haven't seen the first season (Them: Covenant), I highly recommend seeing it, not only because it's an excellent series but because it connects to the new season (Them: The Scare) and really brings everything together nicely for (hopefully) a third season.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
First off, this series isn't a thriller. It's horror combined with whodunit and a little history. It's the late 1980s and early 1990s in Los Angeles, and the Rodney King beating just took place. We're a year away from the riots and Detective Dawn Reeve (Deborah Ayorinde) is investigating a grisly murder at a foster home. Meanwhile, Edmund Gaines (Luke James) is gearing up for his shift at Cheddar's (think Chuck E. Cheese) as their pig mascot to entertain the kids. He's also a wannabe actor who just can't make the cut. When an opportunity comes for him to get the lead in a slasher film, he decides to be a method actor, and things go downhill from there.
The deaths are especially frightening - bodies contorted into horrific human pretzels. Eyes wide open. Mouths twisted in fear. It's almost reminiscent of The Ring. At one point, Detective Reeve questions a young boy about what he's seen and he gives her a piece of candy. He says he's only seen "the red-haired man" in his mirror. Maybe this is referencing Candyman?
Then we get to the big twist in the final two episodes - it turns out Detective Reeve and Edmund are brother and sister. Twins, in fact. Not only that, but Edmund is already dead.
The connection between season 1 and season 2 not only shocks but it brings depth to what happens in the end and also what could happen in future seasons. I really hope it gets picked up again!

@gyubby99 APONI'S BACKSTORY
So. Full name: Lillian Carlton
Age if death: 19
Nationality: 🇵🇷(moms side) 🇺🇸(dads side)
Born in the early 1990s
So imma talk about her parents first
So Deborah is Puerto Rican, but she was born in America and grew up in Texas but moved to California when she was in high school.
Charles was also born in America and grew up in California.
So Charles and Deborah met when they were in high school. They hit it off pretty well, became good friends. They even went to the same college! That's when they fell in love....
Believe it or not, Deborah was not always a strong overly catholic person. When she and Charles were together she had a wild side. Charles would take her for rides on his motorcycle. Her red hair would flow out behind her and she'd have just... the biggest smile on her face!
Charles fell in love with her deeply. He asked her to marry him, and she said yes! Oh their wedding was so fun! The cake was huge, and Deborah's wedding dress wasn't a dress. It was pants and a lil cape thing attat he'd to her hips.
Then she got pregnant. Oh She was so happy! Charles was too. They were both so excited to have a kid!
One day they were driving down the road to meet Deborah's parents for breakfast at a nice little diner.... Deborah and Charles got into a car accident and lost their baby.
Deborah resided to Christianity to help her get through it. She believed in it so much, that it drove her a little bit crazy......
Then she got pregnant again..... oh she was so scared..... when Lilly was born Deborah prayed and prayed for her happiness, and that Lilly would never be hurt..... they named her Lilly because those were the flowers Deborah had at her wedding.
Lilly got a bit older, to where she was 3 and Deborah had another kid! She named him Gabriel after the angel because she believed the name brought good luck.
The two grew up together! They were practically best friends.
In elementary school, Deborah made Lilly join the church choir because she knew Lilly's voice was one of a kind.
That's where she met Mal.
The two girls were the best friends anyone could ever hope or ask for. Lilly would think something and Mal would repeat it back. The girls were so in sync they got their first periods together and made plans to have a combined wedding, and families at the same time so their kids would be best friends.
Lilly is a daddy's girl. She loves her dad more than anything and constantly just wants to spend time with him.
Her mother on the other hand is... different.... Deborah is overbearing, emotionally abusive at times, and somewhat violent. She was fucked up when she lost her first baby.... so naturally she wants to keep Lilly close to her at all times....
Lilly wore glasses for the longest time. She liked them! They made her feel good about herself.. until a girl (Let's call her jessica) made fun of her in 8th grade. After that, Lilly started to wear contacts.
Mal and Lilly did everything together! In high school they joined the same clubs, and even had most of the same classes.
That's when Lilly met Jason..... he was the captain of the football team! Lilly had to Tudor him in math every Saturday and she started falling for him a bit.
When homecoming rolled around, Jason asked Lilly to be his date. Of course she said yes! She was soooo happy and her and Jason became boyfriend and girlfriend.
Lilly had everything she could hope for!
But when Mal dropped out, she stopped talking to Lilly.
Lilly was obviously devastated. She thought she did something wrong..... something so wrong that her best friend just didn't wanna talk to her anymore.....
Senior year rolled around and Lilly had gone on a school trip (somewhere idk) and thats when she saw Mal again. Lilly tried to convince Mal that she could stay with her when high school was over, but Mal refused harshly, snapping at Lilly and telling her to go live a good life without her.
After the trip, Lilly went home only to be confronted by her mother who was holding Lilly's phone.
The two got into a huge fight about Lilly moving out with Jason. So big, that when Lilly actually DID leave, Deborah never spoke to her again.
Jason and Lilly had a pretty good time together the first few weeks! They set up their apartment together and Jason started working at a local gas station which surprisingly paid pretty well.
Lilly however, was a paid intern at a corporate company. Things were going great!
Until Jason started doing drugs.....
Lilly didn't mind most of the time.... they made him sleepy so she was constantly helping him get to bed. But then he started drinking..... he wasn't a good person when he was drinking.... he convinced Lilly that things would be different if she just took some drugs herself..... so she did....
They both got pretty hooked.... it got so bad that Lilly had gotten fired from her job at the internship.
One morning though, she started throwing up so bad that she was paler than usual.
When she took a pregnancy test, it came back positive! She was excited. And immediately stopped doing drugs cold turkey. Jason didn't stop.....
We all know the rest.

The 62nd annual Grammy Awards were on Sunday. Here are highlights from the show:
Billie Eilish won five awards, including record, album and song of the year, capping a night that also saw multiple wins for Lizzo and Lil Nas X.
Our critics and writers weigh in on the best and worst moments.
Lizzo and host Alicia Keys kicked off the show by addressing the death of the basketball star Kobe Bryant.
The ousted Grammys chief Deborah Dugan is at war with the Recording Academy. In a speech, Keys seemed to reference the turmoil.

ep 0 volume 5 spoilers/thoughts below 👇👇
huuuh interesting that the fake scenery from b7’s window was hellfire for deborah, but a big blue moon for ray 👀 i suppose the background changes depending on the sacrifice? this really shows that gray knows more about the sacrifices than he lets on, and he especially knows the reason why he chose them as a sacrifice…
….foreshadowing! considering everyone in this panel is dead lmfao
i dunno why but i really like this moment so much!! seeing gray take charge and make it clear to the angels that this is his experiment and they are very much apart of it….. it’s just so good
just want to say shin is so pretty??!!??!!?!?!?! we don’t talk about him enough and i think that’s a crime tbh. shin fans rise up
this is really funny and intriguing to me. the rules clearly state that all angels have to stay on their respective floors when a sacrifice is in the building, and i know eddie isn’t technically an angel here yet... but with how strict gray is, i’m kinda surprised gray appears to be fine with eddie hanging out with shin when shin is supposed to be, you know, working.
then again gray does have a soft spot for eddie, so maybe in the rules there’s a fine print beneath the “all angels need to stay on their respective floor*” rule that says “* except for eddie if he wants to hang out with shin :)”
i guess the “leaving their respective floor” rule is just something that needs to be broken by the b6 angel 😭
eddie and cathy whispering about danny is so cute and funny HELP
eddie being worried about shin 🥺🥺🥺🥺 ughhh i really love their friendship, so knowing how it ends….. 🫠
this is actually a pretty common feeling shin! if you take the murder part out of it, anyways
THEM THEM THEM THEM THEM UGHHHHHHHH I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!! eddie really looks up to shin so much it’s adorable
and again with shin giving eddie a head pat 🥹🥹🥹 reminds me of zack with ray LOL, kind of a shame they never met shin…..
eddie has no idea what’s about to happen….. T___T
AND HIS REACTION TO FINDING SHIN 😭😭😭😭🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕💔💔💔💔💔
makes sense gray would think this way… but it still hurts 🥹
i am in SHAMBLES!!!!!! at least eddie is taking shin’s death way better than i am 😭
the last panel is really really powerful to me. shin’s ghost-like appearance on the other side of the mirror, with his back to eddie… it symbolizes he’s passed onto another life without actually saying it, and despite the barrier between life and death, eddie’s words still reached shin… 🥹
(shin's ghost is also sitting, almost like he's waiting for eddie to cross over as well... perhaps he already knows of eddie's fate and wants to be there to greet eddie on the other side? ..... or maybe i'm looking way too much into this panel...)
nice foreshadowing of danny’s ultimate fate here as well 👀 pretty sure he said the exact same thing to gray in the main story when the building was going down, and that’s where he got his answer… that yes, his desires did not make him an angel, but a human. a nice little callback to the main series, despite this being the prequel!
“father gray said it’s my turn on the xbox”
THERE HE IS!!!! ZACK’S FIRST OFFICIAL APPEARANCE IN EP 0!!!!
gosh it feels SO GOOD seeing zack again!!!!! it’s been so long……. missed this guy ☝️☝️☝️☝️
aaaaand that’s the end of volume 5! so we leave off on how gray discovered zack!
also imo, “the laughing reaper” is a much better name for zack than “the back-alley murderer”. laughing reaper fits him much better!
them… i will never emotionally recover 🫠
overall another really good volume of ep 0!!! i love seeing how everything builds up to the main story!!! i’m gonna be really sad when this story ends….. i will miss it </3

welcome to london, JILL TUCK! did anyone ever tell you that you look just like MORENA BACCARIN? well, no matter, we hear that you are 46 and working as a/an DOCTOR. we also hear that you currently DON’T HAVE your memories from SAW and have a tendency to be KIND as well as RECKLESS.
DEMOGRAPHICS
Name: Jill Tuck Relatives: John Kramer (ex-husband), Occupation: Doctor at St. George’s Hospital Birthday: July 8th Age: 46 Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual Moral Alignment: Neutral Good Memory Status: Intact
BACKGROUND
Trigger Warning: Child Death, mentions of drug addicts Jill Tuck was the devoted wife of John Kramer, a successful civil engineer and founder of the Urban Renewal Group, a foundation dedicated to property development for needy people under the motto "Four walls build a home". Jill's other known family included her nephew, a kind young man. In the past, Jill's family owned a Pig Farm, but it was closed down after an outbreak of Aujeszky's disease. With John's support, Jill opened the Homeward Bound Clinic, a recovery clinic for drug addicts under the motto, "Cherish your life". She was also supported by William Easton, manager of the Umbrella Health insurance company, who sponsored a party for the clinic.
Jill and John were expecting a child, which John had already meticulously planned to be born during the year of the pig in the Chinese zodiac. It was also he who gave their son his name, Gideon, the same name as John's first building. At some point, John obtained a new workshop that he proudly showed to Jill. Thereby, he showed her an old clock he had told her about and which was part of a deal he had made. This clock greatly fascinated him as the clockwork was almost 300 years old and still worked. As a surprise for her, he also presented Jill with his self-made presents for Gideon, a cot and a wooden puppet, showing that he was just as devoted to his son as he was to his wife. However, he soon became worried about Jill's safety at her clinic when he interrupted a brawl between two patients, Cecil Adams, and Gus Colyard. After having been separated from each other, Cecil pulled a knife from his pocket. John however told him to reconsider what he was about to do. When Cecil angrily asked him what his problem was, John responded that he was his problem and soon he'd be the problem of everyone else. Eventually, Cecil put the knife away. However, not much later John's worries about Jill's safety turned out to be justified nonetheless.
One night, when Jill was about to leave the clinic, Cecil knocked at the security door at the entrance, claiming that he had forgotten his jacket in the waiting room. After initially hesitating, Jill eventually went back and got him his jacket. However, upon doing so, Cecil pushed her back and threatened her with a knife, thereby forcing her to open the door to the clinic. After obeying his order, Cecil told her to stand back. However, Jill carefully approached the door. Just at this moment, Cecil came back with a bag of stolen medications and thereby accidentally slammed a doorknob into Jill's stomach, who was in her seventh month of pregnancy at this time. As she saw the blood on her skirt, she slumped down and started to cry. Cecil tried to calm her down and asked her what happened. However, when he realized what he had done, he quickly fled. Upon leaving the clinic, he was spotted by John, who sat in his car and had been waiting for Jill. Alerted by this, John ran into the clinic and found his wife. He brought her to the Angel of Mercy Hospital where he met Deborah, one of the nurses, who immediately took care of his wife. However, despite all efforts, the doctors weren't able to save the child. While John sat on her bed and held her hand, Jill claimed that she only wanted to help the people in her clinic. John merely responded that she couldn't help them as they could only help themselves.
Following Gideon's death, John suffered from severe depression, causing him to withdraw from both his wife and the Urban Renewal Group. Therefore, his partner and lawyer, Art Blank, asked Jill about his whereabouts. As Jill didn't know where he was, they became worried and she helped Art to search for him. Eventually, they went to John's workshop. Initially thinking he wasn't there, she ultimately spotted him sitting on a chair in a corner and asked him not to get mad at her for bringing Art to the workshop. Art then asked him how he felt and condoled over Gideon's death. However, he also tried to convince John to continue his work for the Urban Renewal Group as 40 needy families were waiting to soon move into the houses John and Art had been working on. John, however, who was annoyed and angered by his visit, told Art to leave immediately. After initially refusing, Art eventually left and told John to call him once he felt better. Moments later, Jill left as well, reminding John that she was suffering from the loss of Gideon just like he did. Ultimately, his emotional detachment caused John to separate from her, telling her not to come back again. After their divorce, Jill reverted to her maiden name "Tuck".

hc ; // -that all angels above the standard mortal souls that just chill in heaven after death have a duty to periodically perform community service equating to guardian angel duties. They are assigned different living human souls and are expected to, according to their files and pre recorded death expectancy, step in when needed to preserve universal balance.
Adam has very few assigned to him due to him consistently being the 'shows up late with Starbucks' guy, leading to several premature deaths of his clients. If the current roster is swamped with work though, they will unenthusiastically saddle him with more souls to steer.
During his life on Earth despite Michael watching over both him and Eve, he was to be the new seraphim at the time (Sera's) human, and she shadowed Michael during those preliminary years as being the guardian angel of the first man was a big deal at the time.
Some of Adam's past clients include Julius Caesar, Michelangelo (may have naked posed for him), Constantine XI, Jeanne D'Arc (quothe Jerico- when the French hoes got driven away Adam VC: OH COME ON-!!), a handful of King Henry VIII's wives, Pope John XII (bro didn't remember the safe word-), and Deborah Sampson (yes he sang I'll make a man out of you-).
He's generally not very helpful, subbed to the 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' mentality, (which is likely why most of his clients meet grisly fates) but forgets how fragile humans are so they might end up dead before he steps in, and if they're alive- they get a little speech about how massive their dick energy is to have him as a guardian and how they're 'doing just great, sweetie' before he masked man from Sailor Moons outtie.
#//u rly don't want him as ur guardian angel in other words#//sets this here and zooms off to the movies 🍿#hc ; // the ribs are bussin'

@gyubby99 okay i couldn't help it.
Warnings: mentions of r*pe, bad parenting, toxicity.
I'd also like to put a disclaimer, clearly the time in this isn't Canon, so don't come for me.
This is and Alastor x OC fanfic.
"Are you sure about this, darling?" Alastor asked Aponi as she put down the telephone after calling two people.
"Yep. I've forgiven them and I want them to know it. I wanna be the bigger person," Aponi replied.
"If they try anything, they die," Vaggie muttered.
"They won't. Not with you guys here," Aponi replied.
"They'd better hope they dont," Angel Dust replied.
"Guys calm down. If Aponi trusts it, then it's her choice," Charlie interrupted.
"Exactly. Plus who's gonna hurt me with the protection of the radio demon, and daughter of hell on my side? I'm gonna be fine," Aponi stated.
There was a knock on the door.
"They're here," Husk stated as he took a drink of beer.
"Thanks captain obvious," Angel taunted.
Charlie opened the door, and in walked Aponi's Mother. As well as Aponi's ex.
"Jason. Mother. Thanks for coming. You guys can have a seat," Aponi stated as she gestured to the hotel couch.
"Ya know. From the call I thought maybe you wanted me back," Jason stated with a smirk as he sat down.
Alastor smiled widely as his expression got dark.
Jason must've noticed because his expression shown fear and he sat up straighter, as if on edge.
"I thought you called because you needed money. Or some decent clothes that aren't from a brothel," her mother started.
"Hey! Those are made of strong materials!" Angel Dust defended. "And they were gifts!" He finished.
"I called you two here because I want you to know that I forgive you," Aponi stated.
Absolute silence.
"Forgive me? For what, Lilly? Giving you a good life only for you to destroy it by running off with... a pig," her mother taunted, looking at Jason with the last word.
"You've always been such a bitch, Deborah," Jason snorted.
"Says the lowlife who raped my daughter," Aponi's mother replied.
"Oh my fucking God it was one time!" Jason yelled.
"She killed herself over it!" Vaggie shouted right back.
And that's when the whole room filled with arguing.
Aponi walked over to Alastor and sighed.
"I should've made them leave the room, huh?" Aponi asked.
"On the contrary, darling. I quite like this chaos," Alastor smirked.
He turned to see Aponi looking at him sternly.
"Yes, my dear," he muttered before sending of a high screeching noise, courtesy of his microphone.
The arguing stopped as everyone turned to Aponi and Alastor.
"As a matter of fact mother, I forgive you for manipulating me. For kicking me out when I told you Jason and I were leaving when school ended. For not talking to me, For not loving me the way you should've. I forgive you. I dont know why you did what you did, but I cant change the past and honestly I'm tired of holding onto the anger," Aponi explained.
Her mother looked down and nodded.
"I.... thank you, Lilly," She murmured before sitting down.
"And.. Jason.... what you did.... it was the hardest thing to get over. And it took 70 years for me to get over it, but I finally did. There's no excuse for what happened. But I love myself enough now to know that I don't wanna give that moment power over my life AND death. I forgive you," Aponi stated.
"Lilly.... despite my time in hell... when I found you when you died? I.... I'm sorry..... after that I tried so hard to be sober.... but I died before it could happen. I am sorry," Jason apologized.
Aponi let out a Breath and smiled, tears in her eyes.
The room lit up with white light.
"What's happening?" Vaggie asked as she looked up to the roof to see what looked like a portal to heaven.
Aponi looked around, everyone's eyes were on her.
"What?" She asked before looking at herself. She gasped. She was covered in a white glow.
"I was right," Charlie muttered as a smile grew on her face.
Alastor's eyes widened as he looked at Aponi.
She started walking toward the portal before she was stopped by a hand.
"Lilly, darling,... Don't forget me," Alastor stated as he looked at her, a small smile on his face threatening to break, his eyes filling with tears, a rare sight that only Aponi had ever seen.
"Forget you? Alastor, my love.. I'd have to die a billion times over before I'd even start to do that," Aponi replied with a smile.
Alastor pulled her in and kissed her.
Everyone in the room stared wide eyed.
He had never done that in public. And yet here he was, the radio demon himself, kissing the love of his death in front of the whole room of other demons.
The glow on Aponi grew brighter until it dissapeared, taking her with it.
When everyone's eyes adjusted to the darkness again, there was Alastor sitting on the floor numbly.
"I was right," Charlie muttered before laughing. "I WAS RIGHT!" She yelled before going over to the phone to call her dad.
"She's.... just gone?" Angel Dust asked.
Alastor stood up, his smile still on his face, as wide as ever.
"Yes I believe she is! I will be retiring to my room for a while, my friends," He stated joyfully before quickly shuffling out of the room.
"He's hurtin' isn't he?" Angel asked.
"More than he ever has before," Husk replied.
"She... what just happened?" Aponi's mother asked.
"Her last step must've been forgiveness," Vaggie replied. "Shes tried for 70 years to redeem herself, and the second she let go of all the hate she had for you two....." Vaggie trailed off with a smile.
"Shes in heaven?" Jason asked.
"Yep," Angel replied.
Meanwhile alastor walked into Aponi's room, still smiling. He started to pack up and clean out her items.
He stopped when he looked into her closet and saw a wrapped box with a tag on it labeled with his name.
Happy birthday Al
-Love, your Lilly
It read.
Alastor opened it carefully to see a radio with butterfly wings on it.
Aponi's eyes opened as she adjusted to her surroundings.
It was very different from hell.
"Lilly?" A man's voice asked from behind her.
She turned around.
"Dad?" She asked. "Dad!" She exclaimed before running over to hug him, tears in her eyes.
"70 years and I'm finally here," Aponi stated.
"70? It's only been 6 minutes since I died," Her father spoke.
"What? But.. Thats.... does that mean you died a year after I left?" Aponi asked.
"I did, yes," he replied.
"How many minutes has it been?" She asked again.
"Only one," he stated.
And at that moment nifty appeared.
"Nifty?" Aponi asked.
"Oh my goodness! Aponi!" Nifty smiled.
"Aponi?" Anither voice asked. Vaggie.
"Vaggie!" Aponi exclaimed, a smile on her face.
"That was the weirdest feeling I've ever felt in my life," Vaggie stated as she looked around.
A loud thud came from beside them.
"Angel?" Aponi asked.
"Oh my God. I-.... that's the most unexpected...." Angel trailed off before seeing his friends.
"Time is relatively here. 1 minute here is 10 years in hell and on earth," Aponi explained quickly.
The group stayed in silence.
"So now what? Like..... what do we do?" Angel asked.
"We wait?" Aponi suggested.
"Lilly?" A voice came.
"Mother?" Aponi asked as she saw the image of her mother.
"Deborah?" Aponi's father stated.
The family hugged for a good 2 minutes, awkward stares from Aponi's friends.
"What the hell?" Came the voice of husk from behind all of them.
"We're all here!" Nifty exclaimed.
"Not all of us," Vaggie muttered. Aponi sighed.
"So this is heaven? Not bad," Husk stated as he nodded his head.
"Obviously there's more but I think we should wait a bit longer," Angel stated.
"You guys can go ahead," Aponi stated. "I'll wait here,"
"You sure?" Vaggie asked.
Aponi nodded and her friends and family all walked away to go look around.
An hour passed.
Aponi had sat down and waited in silence.
"Hellow darling," A familliar voice spoke from in front of her.
She stood up quickly and stared at the man in front of her. She smiled.
"Hello, Alastor," she stated.
