hiii i just want 2 say. shoutout to us for having the very specific/kind of comical overlap in interests of both homestuck and poetry it’s really good to me

tbh!! we're shaking hands rn. i will say though, the leap between homestuck and poetry is really not that big. i mean aside from the consistent references to ts eliot especially in the first few acts, (web)comics and poetry have a lot in common as mediums. one of my favorite comic writers at the moment, al ewing, actually wrote a short newsletter about this subject that sums up my thoughts well which you can read here if you're interested. he focuses more on 'traditional' comics (and more specifically this one panel lol), but the same/similar rules and philosophies still apply, especially considering how much hussie was inspired by cape comics to write homestuck

to me, poetry is about effectiveness -- saying as much as you can with as little as you can. comics, at their best, work within this same mode of thinking. why say something or someone is physically present in words if you can show it more effectively in an illustration? why show your character moping when you can show how they feel more effectively with words? thats the poetry of comics to me and its why i love the medium so much

{Context: Squalo learnt English from a Londoner. Have you ever heard of Cockney rhyming slang? It uses terms such as "Liza Minelli", rhyming with and referring to a 'telly' or TV. The rhyming part is omitted. Hence, Liza replaces 'telly' and Scooby (short for Scooby-Doo, naturally) fittingly means "clue". In other words, he's saying "I've been trying to set up the TV but as for if that's actually working I have no fucking idea."

And yes, I do write out the Cockney accent.

Since the original comics are on my art blog, I'm posting the compilation video on this blog. It includes my christmas headcanon about the birth of jesus and a bit of angel X demon (it's angelfish for me, but it can be any couple you want lol). I love to talk about any of these ideas!

Submission for Equestria Daily's Fluttershy Day. Based on the seapony designs from My Little Pony: Set Your Sail, the G5 comic miniseries. Each one seems to be based partially on some sort of sea creature; initially my idea was an angelfish or a sea angel, until I remembered that butterflyfish existed. (The wings were added after I finished everything else on her.) Angel is a sea angel, but he's not too thrilled about it! (and he's pink.) (It was also going to have a proper undersea background, but then I got lazy.)

Ray fillet headcanons Remake

I watched the movie so now I'm writing with more knowledge. Came into the cinema knowing very well that he was going to be my favorite and did not disappoint. Sweet baby angelfish I love him so much. (But holy shit I was right about him really loving music)

I hope the new videogame, the series and the sequel gives us more depth about his character (Though I'm extremely grateful they finally remembered his existence) and I pray they don't kill him like the Archie and IDW comics did.

Ray's sight is not the best, having one eye missing can really affect your perception, but also having myopia in your only eye left is devastating. That's mainly the reason why he's wearing the scuba diving glasses, the other reason is because he thinks they look cool. But, since they are not prescription glasses they barely have any effect and are completely useless. Thankfully, he relies a lot on his cephalic fins that sense electric fields and allow him to move without crashing into anything. Most of the time.

Nobody knows how he lost his eye, not even his siblings. He just showed up one day with a missing eye and he keeps changing the version every time he tells it.

He loves to sing so much he decided to open a youtube channel to do covers. He had to be explained thorougly what royalties were and why he couldn't cover any song he wanted to just because so. So he started writing his own songs.

Meme songs, he knows them all and will use them for evil. It's both a blessing and a curse. He is the master of rickrolling because you never see him coming.

He found out the ocean's has an awesome acoustic, so sometimes he sings while he is diving and records it for his channel, it's his own ASMR.

He loves tattoos, it's like a form of artistic expression, and he gets to wear them all the time! Bebop is the one who does all the ink work and Mondo just provides the designs, and whatever they come up with, Ray likes it.

Despite his love for singing and the arts, he is one to keep on the background, never taking the spotlight. This is mostly because Superfly's treatment of him and his singing, he feels anyone is going to rudely tell him to shut up. He is slowly regaining confidence in himself.

Out of all his siblings, Ray is the one who suffered the most verbal abuse from Superfly due to his personality and singing. He knew that his brother, despite everything, cared for him, but Ray has always been very sensitive and took it to heart.

To release some steam he likes to hit the punching bag, he feels bad about it because every time he hits it he imagines his ex-brother's face. Regardless of all the mistreatment, he was still his big bro who raised them when nobody else would.

If they formed a super hero B team, Ray would be the least interested, as he says "he just wants to sing" so superheroics are not a thing for him. That doesn't mean he is willing to stand aside and let innocent people suffer, Ray is, above everything else, a very nice and kind soul who will always lend a hand to those in need.

Ray is one of the strongest members on his team, behind Bebop and Rocksteady, but doesn't like to show off his strength unless it is in combat.

He is a big admirer of Big Man in Splatoon 3, he wants to be everything he is, an idol who will sing his feelings to the world.

He is hoping someone will form a band with him and perform together on shows. One of his biggest dreams is to perform at Coachella.

When he gets excited, his tail starts to wiggle widly, which may become a problem due to his sting, at first, he was worried he was going to harm anyone, but he has since started to warn his family when 'the wiggles' are coming so they can move or use something as a shield.

I actually think King Crimson/Adrian Belew is a pretty solid pick for Adam by James Gunn lol, I love when adaptions lean into him liking rock music because of his glamrock costumes in the comics + his Counter-Earth days were inspired by the Jesus Christ Superstar musical so 60/70/80s rock definitely feels like something he'd be into. Some punk/psychadelic/gospel/folk influences sprinkled in... I also think he'd like jazzy/orchestral/operatic type stuff in particular 🤔 Queen, David Bowie, Electric Light Orchestra, Led Zeppelin, Grace Slick, Eloy, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Electric Prunes, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Ghost, Apocalyptica, Stratovarius, Will Wood, Oingo Boingo, Dead Man's Bones, Starbenders, Rosegarden Funeral Party, King Dude, The Eagle Rock Gospel Singers, Amigo the Devil... Etc.

Thanos... They have very similar tastes in everything but I think he'd lean more into heavy metal/emo/industrial music. Oldschool love songs are very Thanos-coded to me too but! Nine Inch Nails, Slipknot, Tool, Judas Priest, Overkill, Heathen, Powerwolf, Archives, Spiritbox, Death, Rob Zombie, Lordi, Nightwish, HIM, Angelfish, Depeche Mode, Gazelle Twin, Slowdive, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds... Debated not including it but I just know deep in my heart he would also unironically love Evanescence.

I'm sure they'd like classical music too but I know nothing about it so I've got no idea where to even start on that front. My roommate @niennasapprentice suggested Erlkönig though and I trust her judgement... It's a nice song. 🫡

So despite my fears I gave Blender a shot

I needed a model for this ship I call the AngelFish to trace for my comic. I thought it would be too diffucult for me to learn a new program but here we are after about 2 hours I think?

If anyone has some solid extreme beginners guides to this I would appreciate you sharing them

There’s too many instances to count where I should’ve realized I’m a lesbian. For starters, men flirting with me was always a no go. Although in my defense, guys generally suck at flirting with me. 

I got told if I was a fish I’d be an angelfish, not by the guy who was interested in me, no instead he had his best friend do it for him. And I was insulted when it didn’t sweep me off my feet. 

Another guy was trying to flirt and banter with me about Spider-Man, I used to wear a lot of Spidey merch, it was no secret that I was a fan. However, he missed the mark because he was grilling and insulting me to see if I knew any of the comics. I did, but he never gave me enough time to answer. And I saw in real time that he messed up and he would just walk away and try again at a different time. It never worked. Ever. 

One time in class we had to shake people’s hands for an activity, introduce ourselves. This guy didn’t let go of my hand and told me my hands were so soft. He tried smizing and I hated every second of it. It was our first class of the day, I pulled my hand back and let him sit with it. 

Then there was this guy who tried flirting through banters and jokes, every interaction was painfully awkward. The jokes never landed, and he always interrupted himself. Also, I always felt him staring at me and it made me very uncomfortable. 

I did think something was wrong with me when I was really little, kindergarten, and this guy was sweet, charming, funny, smart and knew my boundaries. I wanted to like him so badly. But couldn’t for the life of me. He was learning magic tricks for me. And compared to another guy at the time who kept crossing my boundaries, grabbing me, kissing my hand, never understanding what no meant, this guy was perfect. I was so upset with myself because I didn’t like him back and he knew it. But still remained respectful. I was annoyed mostly because I did have a crush on a guy in our class or so I thought, I later realized I just had a crush on his older sister. 

For the longest time I just assumed I didn’t like to be flirted with, until it wasn’t guys flirting with me. 

In class one day we did a “speed dating” style of getting to know someone, and it was awkward for the most part. I was completely thrown for a loop when this girl flirted with me the entire time, she knew I was flustered and I had no idea what to do with myself. She left me wondering what happened. Still can’t tell you. All I know is we didn’t get through all our questions. 

That instance did make me realize that I had girls flirting with me before, just none were as bold, so it went over my head.

Vivtor is the current Jellyfish King, husband to Jellyfish Queen Victoria, father to Princess Vivi and grandfather to Sting.

History

Vivtor was born in 1962. Being five years older than most of the kings and queens, he practically spent part of his childhood without many friends, spending his time reading comics and listening to rock and roll music, his favourite genre that he discovered thanks to his father. His first friend was Prince Andy who is also five years older than the other kings.

Due to the circumstances of his cohort, he would not attend school until the age of 11 when the other princes and princesses were old enough to attend as well. At school, he would meet Turtle Prince Taigo and they would become best friends to the present day. He was a very joking and sarcastic boy who would play pranks on his friends. Later on, he fell in love with the Jellyfish Princess Victoria; although they were both very different, they both had a lot in common. They would get married and become the rulers of the Jellyfish Kingdom, later having a daughter who they named Vivi. Vivtor would teach Vivi some of the pranks he used on his friends.

Vivtor and Taigo remained good friends even as they became fathers. Taigo and his wife, Harmony, became the godparents to Vivi while Vivtor and Victoria became the godparents to Taigo and Harmony’s twins, Tata and Hugo. Likewise, Vivi and Tata became best friends.

Vivtor’s joking attitudes continued to extend to the other kings in adulthood, giving other kings nicknames much to their chagrin:

Shark King: Blondie

Penguin King: Sebastian (butler)

In return, others like to call Vivtor old despite being five years older than the other kings. Despite this, he is generally friendly and he harbours no bad intentions.

In the series

Although Vivtor was never featured in the animated series proper, he was mentioned at one point and his influence also extends to a couple of other episodes:

The Argument: Vivtor and Victoria are mentioned by the Shark and Starfish Kings as they agreed with the kings’ idea of building a new playground near the Jellyfish Palace and they enjoyed the company of children. Upon hearing that the Shark and Starfish Kings argued over an apparent disagreement when they actually agreed all along, Vivtor was quoted as saying, “The fuck were you arguing about?”

The Trick: As stated, Vivtor taught Vivi many pranks which she would play on her friends, including Polvina, Ester and Tubarina, which is shown in the episode.

The Itchy Wrists: One of Vivtor’s hobbies is to tattoo himself with his personal skin painting maker. One day, Vivi stole the maker, unbeknownst to him, and gave other princesses skin paintings behind Big Nose Rock. However, due to Vivi’s inexperience with the maker, not knowing how it works and not knowing the proper aftercare procedures, the skin paintings caused the princesses to itch terribly. After a while, Vivtor would realise that his skin painting maker had gone missing and only found out when word got around that Vivi gave other princesses skin paintings. Vivtor severely punished Vivi upon discovering the truth for himself.

Vivtor later discovered that Vivi was in love with the Lionfish Princess Lia and would accept their relationship without any problems. He also learnt that Vivi and Lia wanted to have a baby and that Maurico would be the donor, meaning that Vivtor would become a grandfather to their son and the future heir of the Jellyfish Kingdom, Sting.

Personality

Vivtor is generally a very friendly and good-natured man on top of being a proud joker and father. He does not have many problems with the other kings except for the harsh comments and mild mockeries he makes of them. It is not a good idea to mess with him when he is angry because he becomes a completely different man, being creepily serious and somewhat aggressive, though he would never hurt his friends or family.

Relationships

Turtle King Taigo: Vivtor and Taigo have been very good friends since they were very young, loving and respecting each other over the years.

Vivi: Vivtor and Vivi have a good father-daughter relationship, loving and respecting each other a lot. Vivtor always wants to make Vivi happy and so he spoils her from time to time.

Appearance

Vivtor is a man of tall stature and muscular build (his muscles are not noticeable due to the thick clothes he wears) with tanned dark skin. He has a firm face with some wrinkles (not noticeable due to his facial hair), a recessed nose and full brown eyes with black eyeshadow. He has a long black beard with some grey hair and he has a small tattoo above his eyebrow that is not visible without his crown. Vivtor has a shaved head like his entire family, a tradition passed down from his ancestors with their crowns acting as artificial hair. As such, he wears a very long red jellyfish crown that serves as his hair covering his ears, making it resemble a rockstar hairstyle from the 70’s.

Vivtor wears an all-black outfit with a shirt, pants held with a black belt and jellyfish symbol, shoes and leather trench coat with some grey touches and gold touches on the cuffs. Among his accessories he wears silver or gold rings, fingerless gloves, silver or gold necklaces and pendants, plus he also has tattoos on his body. He is constantly told by others that he looks like a rock star and many consider Vivtor the most stylish king in Salacia.

Skills

One of Vivtor’s skills is the Jellysting Arts, which he uses to shock the enemies he touches. The effect is more similar to the electric currents of the electric eels than the venomous stings of jellyfish. Aside from that, Vivtor is not very good at physical combat and he usually fights with weapons.

Vices

Among Vivtor’s vices is smoking shisha, or at least something resembling it made of hallucinogenic herbs and algae, a vice which he shares with Shai and Wagan. He also likes to drink beer. Vivtor is also known to be very sexually active with his wife as they like having intimate relations together.

Curiosities

- Vivtor is a big fan of rock and roll and he bases his appearance on 70’s rockstars. Some of his favourite artists include The Rolling Stones, Slash and Ringo Starr.

- As previously stated, the Jellyfish Royal Family shaves their hair and uses their crowns as artificial hair. This is similar to what Egyptian families did back in the days of Ancient Egypt.

This becomes hilarious in hindsight when you consider that Tubarina proposed putting octopus ink in Vivi’s shampoo so that her hair would turn blue, presuming that she, Polvina and Ester didn’t know about this. Vivi and her family presumably wouldn’t need to bother with shampoo, but it’s not like they couldn’t put it in her body wash so that it would stain her skin.

- The character of Vivtor was invented in 2016 as a villain, having different names including Ares, Negan and simply The Devil.

- Vivtor is usually a cheerful man with a smile on his face, but when he gets serious, he becomes creepily serious, making people uncomfortable as they prefer him as a joker.

- The Jellyfish Royal Family is based on an Egyptian family.
