WOW WHAT A WOMAN

Literally fought her way through an army of the dead to become QUEEN OF HEL so she could save her sorceress wife, rewrote the laws of existence so her wife could return to the mortal plain, then immediately said "peace I'm out" and abdicated the position

Canonically has a subscription to the Daily Bugle because she "likes the crossing of the words"

Teams up with the Guardians of the Galaxy on the weekends

Is a constant menace to the Asgardians because she cannot be tracked by Heimdall because her magical dress was designed to specifically thwart his all-seeing gaze (it was originally designed to protect his wife's booty on their wedding day)

Also the dress morphs itself into whatever would be most beautiful to the wearer, which in Angel's case is a pair of wings because growing up she was mocked for not having wings and probably still has an inferiority complex about it

Like, she's not actually an angel, she was kidnapped by the angels as a hostage during their war with Asgard

And she was literally the daughter of Odin, heir to the throne of Asgard, so you know, that may have pissed the Asgardians of a little bit

And by a little bit, I mean they magically sealed off the Angel's home, turning the Ten Realms into the Nine Realms, and also banishing them to Hel when they died

Which is why she had to girl-boss her way through the Norse underworld to save her wife

Her blade Xiphos is known as The Sword of the Stars, and her other blade Ichors is made of malleable, liquid metal that can reshape itself into any weapon at will

Also has a psychic connection with the ribbons attached to her outfit, meaning she can use them to un-alive you

Like I haven't gotten a copy of the comics yet, I'm just going off what the wiki says, but WOW is all of that a vibe

this is from immediately after the queen of hel era which in general i dont like as much, but god. you're right she really is very. so.

do you have thor reading recs/guides/particular run or era to recommmend to get to know and appreciate the characters?

OOOH YES THANK YOU FOR ASKING

some thor fans and loki fans may disagree with what im gonna say here BUT. i think the run which best encapsulates why i love the character and the universe, as well as having essentially a very long guided tour through some of the most significant points of the thor sub-universe within the larger MU, is jason aaron's huge thor run from 2012 to 2019 (along with everything else happening in the thor universe at that time, covered by al ewing, kieron gillen, and marguerite bennett in a few also very good spinoffs).

this is the series where the God Butcher comes from, where Jane Foster becomes Thor, where loki is canon genderfluid in Agent of Asgard, where thor fights capitalism, and much more. it's not perfect, especially in terms of characterisation when some characters get thrown between their own miniseries and the main run, but it really encapsulates what I love about thor in his comics, and it's the run that, over the course of collecting the five huge paperback collections u can get it in, made me fall in love with this sub-section of the MU

proper reading order under the cut, plus brief explanations of crossover tie-ins and so on. it looks complicated but it's basically just cos marvel loves to re-start with a new #1 every so often to keep sales up, and because i think you should read the accompanying spinoffs. if you don't want to read the excess spinoffs (although agent of asgard is VERY good) just stick to things with 'thor' in the name.

because the marvel universe never stops having big events, an event called AXIS happens immediately after, and results in a bunch of 'heroes' and 'villains' being 'inverted' - the 'villains' becomes 'heroes' and vice versa. both thor and loki are involved in this, covered in:

that’s a good lineup for sure!!! which versions of heather/phyla would it be? i’ve always liked 616 phyla even though she was a bit of a loser <3 i do have a type.

i too really deeply love having rich around. also i feel like rocket&pete are the core. so i guess i’d go with those three, phy, mantis. adam cause i like his friendship with phy and how much he and pete look out for eachother despite butting heads all the time. while i prefer gamora, i would love to give angela another chance and make her the resident sword girlie for a bit. i remember really enjoying queen of hel and it was a shame she never showed any of her potential in the gotg book. i can take or leave groot depending on which version we’re talking and i still feel like i’d miss gamora in particular but i don’t want to cheat and say like 12 people! there are too many interesting combos.
