You know what I think would be fun? A Mambo No. 5 mini poll. The only thing is, while the shadow realm contains at least one each of Monica, Rita, Sandra, Mary and Jessica - and we could have Cristina Gaioni for Tina - we don't have an Erica. A conundrum.

Sleeping Beauty Spring: "Dornröschen" ("Briar Rose")/"Sleeping Beauty" (1955 German film)
This West German film is one of many cinematic fairy tales to come out of Germany in the 1950s and the early '60s, and one of several to be dubbed into English by Childhood Productions as fodder for Saturday "kiddie matinees" in America. Having already seen two of that company's other dubbed releases, Fritz Genschow's Cinderella and Erich Kobler's Snow White, I looked forward to seeing this Sleeping Beauty, knowing that like the other two, it would probably be fairly corny, but still charming. I was right.
Like the same year's West German Cinderella, this Sleeping Beauty was directed by Fritz Genschow, who also co-wrote the script with Renée Stobrawa. Both Genschow and Stobrawa appear onscreen too, as the King and the castle housekeeper Miss Hustlebustle. (Just as they both appeared in Cinderella as the heroine's father and the Fairy Godmother.) The cast also features Angela von Leitner as Princess Briar Rose and Gert Reinholm as Prince Charming.
In the opening scene, with her husband away on business of state, the lonely Queen wanders the castle grounds longing for a child, until she discovers a mysterious tower in a remote spot. Unbeknownst to her, this is the home of the Wicked Fairy, who gives the Queen a potion that will let her conceive child, on the condition that she invite the Fairy to the christening as a godmother. In truth, the child born from that potion will be evil and ugly. But a magical statue of a frog comes to life and prevents the Queen from drinking it, urging her instead to bathe in a lake enchanted by twelve good fairies. The result, of course, is the birth of a lovely little princess, and the twelve good fairies are invited to the christening. The good fairies are beauties in white robes, each with a headdress of enormous flowers on her head; by contrast, the Wicked Fairy wears black robes and a headdress decked with dead plants. The death curse she places on the princess is softened to sleep by the Rose Fairy.
Sixteen years later, the castle celebrates Briar Rose's birthday. Extensive comic relief is provided by a bevy of mischievous little kitchen boys, whom the cook, Mr. Puddingbowl, struggles to keep in line, while also pursuing a December/December romance with the housekeeper Miss Hustlebustle. Meanwhile, the Wicked Fairy disguises herself as an old woman and approaches Briar Rose, inviting her to come to her tower for a special birthday present. Briar Rose declines at first because her party guests are arriving. But at the ball she finds herself courted by a buffoonish suitor, Prince Suchabore, the son of King Bubble and Queen Babble. To get away from him, she sneaks off to the tower, where of course the "old woman" is waiting with a spindle.
As the Wicked Fairy spreads her curse through the castle grounds, the court doesn't physically fall asleep; instead they all freeze in place like statues, with some of them posed in comical positions for the next hundred years. (Mr. Puddingbowl about to box a kitchen boy's ear, another boy swinging on a string of onions, one man just about to sneeze, etc.) The twelve good fairies then surround the castle with a protective hedge of rosebushes. Many princes over the years try to fight their way through the thorns – we see a montage of them in their assorted colorful, exotic costumes – only to die and transform into red roses on the hedge.
At long last, however, Prince Charming arrives, and he learns the story of Briar Rose from a group of peasant children singing a folksong about her. (One based on the real German children's song "Dornröschen war ein schönes Kind," sometimes known in English as "There Was a Princess Long Ago.") Then from an old man, he gains a flute to summon the twelve good fairies. When he makes his way through the briars and is led by the magic frog to the tower, the Wicked Fairy conjures up a herd of hideous monsters to stop him. But the Prince's sword and the twelve good fairies' magic defeats them and the Wicked Fairy disappears. Prince Charming wakes Briar Rose with a kiss, the royal court unfreezes with no idea that a hundred years went by, and all live happily ever after.
As I expected, this is a slightly clunky Sleeping Beauty. But it's an endearing one all the same, filmed in lush green settings, with pretty 18th century-inspired costumes, and with enjoyable creative touches that don't detract from its basic faithfulness to the Grimms' tale.
I do wish I could see the original German version of the film and not just the English dubbed version, though. Like Childhood Productions' other dubs of German fairy tale films, this dub adds excessive voiceover narration by Paul Tripp, as well as fairly charming yet forgettable songs by Milton and Anne Delugg.
An essential Sleeping Beauty this isn't, but it's still an enjoyable sample of 1950s German fairy tale cinema.

This is Angela Davis in 1972, visiting East German leader Erich Honecker
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a40a579f7b83d6e904db9aa010836575/3fc8ae5c6ff7f205-5c/s540x810/dff0444e5b567cc6e3d6c505a3852694c3fa609f.jpg)
Honecker's government was responsible for the kidnapping, torture and killing of political dissidents, funding of both far-left and far-right organisations in West Germany including the Red Army faction and neo-Nazi groups, and provided funding for the PLO and PFLP, who organised nassacres such as the one that occured during the Munich Olympics. Honecker's government also upheld the "shoot to kill" order against anyone trying to escape from East Germany, so of course Angela Davis went to provide her condolences to a border guard killed by an escapee and praised his service in "protection of the socialist homeland"
She also visited the Soviet Union and mingled with the highest levels of the CPSU leadership, including a close personal friendship with Valentina Tereshkova. The USSR is responsible for countless human rights abuses, massacres, kidnappings, torture and killings of political prisoners, systematic discrimination and violence against Jews, Tatars, Koreans, Central Asian peoples and Ukrainians, and the occupation of nearly half of Europe, imposing the same abuses in such countries
If you listen to Angela Davis' passionate cries against racism, consider that she had no problem with racist human rights abuses enacted by her socialist comrades from overseas. Is this hypocrite who you really want to side with?

From: The Heart of Man: Its Genius for Good and Evil by Erich Fromm, cited in the 30th-anniversary edition of Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed (trans. Myra Bergman Ramos with an introduction by Donaldo Macedo)
Necrophily/biophily as a dialectic in Fromm's text reminds me of another Lu Xun short story -- 'A Madman's Diary'.
Let us turn to when the narrator’s friend has come to talk about his brother. The eponymous madman has recently recovered from his bout of ‘madness’, successfully taking up an official post in another city. During the meeting at the beginning of the short story, the friend presents the narrator with the diary his brother kept while mad (a diary written in vernacular).
During his campaign to persuade people to stop cannibalizing one another, the mad brother is institutionalized. As he spends his days milling around the institution, being jeered at by the other villagers who have come to laugh at his madness, he's left with just his thoughts and then a few historical texts that were left in his room. There’s one specific moment when he’s left with a history book and the words start to swim, transforming simply into the phrase “eat people” over and over again.
Toward the end of his madness, the mad brother realizes that when his sister died during childhood, he and his family likely consumed her. It is at this point that his hope becomes simply to “save the children” — essentially, the madman concludes that cannibalism is so entrenched in the town around him, the only hope for change is with the children who have not yet been born into this system.
But Lu Xun uses a very interesting word when describing cannibalism.
After all, what is more exploitative than eating another person? To quote Angela Carter in The Sadeian Woman: An Exercise in Cultural History:
“Cannibalism, the most elementary act of exploitation, that of turning the other directly into a comestible; of seeing the other in the most primitive terms of use.”
To me, cannibalism is such a moving way to articulate oppression in coded terms, as it is pure necrophily — possession is the only thing that is understood by the necrophilous person, and when what one wants to forcibly possess is the strength (or labor potential) of another person, to possess necessitates a literal or figurative killing.
During a scene before the madman loses hope in changing the cannibalistic community in which he lives (or rather, this system that encourages men to consume each other’s lives in the figurative sense), the madman makes the following plea to his brother:
“Wanting to eat men, at the same time afraid of being eaten themselves, [the people here] all look at each other with the deepest suspicion. . . . How comfortable life would be for them if they could rid themselves of such obsessions and go to work, walk, eat and sleep at ease. They have only this one step to take. Yet fathers and sons, husbands and wives, brothers, friends, teachers and students, sworn enemies and even strangers, have all joined in this conspiracy, discouraging and preventing each other from taking this step.
[…]
If they eat me, they can eat you as well; members of the same group can still eat each other. But if you will just change your ways immediately, then everyone will have peace. Although this has been going on since time immemorial, today we could make a special effort to be good, and say this is not to be done! I'm sure you can say so, brother. The other day when the tenant wanted the rent reduced, you said it couldn't be done.”
Notice how the brother is revealed to be a landlord here — yes, he is a cannibal, but here we see how it is more in the figurative sense, as he refuses to see his tenant as a man who needs support to maintain access to his home, and rather only cares for the money that he can extract from the tenant.
The madman is unsuccessful in convincing his peers to change. After all, the story opens with his brother giving the narrator his diary as a kind of spectacle to laugh at. But nonetheless, we are left with the words of the madman, “Although this has been going on since time immemorial, today we could make a special effort to be good, and say this is not to be done!”.
Here I think we can see echos also of Lu Xun's paradigm of the Iron House, which I will include below.
