Master Of One - Jaida Jones & Dani Bennett (mlm, fantasy, very cool worldbuilding and magic system, funny, cool characters)

Legends & Lattes - Travis Baldree (wlw, fantasy, very soft & chill vibes)

The Priory of the Orange Tree - Samantha Shannon (wlw, high fantasy, cool worldbuilding, kinda reminds me of LOTR but with more dragons and feminism and lesbians)

Even Though I Knew The End - C.L. Polk (wlw, supernatural noir, cool 1930s detective story with angels & demons, I loved this one!)

The Love Interest - Cale Dietrich (mlm, science fiction, very cool concept)

The Darkest Part Of The Forest - Holly Black (side mlm, fantasy, cool fae lore)

The Weight Of The Stars - K. Ancrum (wlw, not quite science fiction but space stuff is involved, lovely and complex characters)

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe - Benjamin Alire Sáenz (mlm, fiction, very nice in general, there is also a sequel)

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue - Mackenzi Lee (mlm, historical and vaguely fantasy, nice story but I preferred the sequel honestly)

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy - Mackenzi Lee (wlw, the sequel to the one before, more fantasy elements than the first, asexual main character!!)

Gallant - V.E. Schwab (no romance, but in the background one of the characters(?) uses they/them pronouns, very cool dark fantasy vibe)

Stranger Than Fanfiction - Chris Colfer (gay main character, trans main character, coming-of-age, nice book)

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (yes it's the Love, Simon book, mlm, fiction, pretty nice)

They Both Die At The End - Adam Silvera (mlm, sci-fi ish but mostly fiction, cool ideas, but the ending is sad! Very amazing book though, I haven't read the prequel yet)

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid (wlw, bi main character, historical fiction, cool story, just a neat book in general)

This Is How You Lose The Time War - Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone (wlw, sci-fi, very cool time travel stuff!! and very beautiful, it felt like reading poetry most of the time)

One Last Stop - Casey McQuinston (wlw, background trans & pan & queer characters, sci-fi or fantasy idk, but time travel, I loooved this book, great)

The House In The Cerulean Sea - TJ Klune (mlm, fantasy, THIS BOOK oh my gosh you should read it!!, just cute and lovely and good)

Under The Whispering Door - TJ Klune (mlm, fantasy, this book is also sooo amazing, great character development and awesome relationships and stuff, it's been a while since I read it but it was so good)

In the Lives of Puppets - TJ Klune (mlm, ace main character!!, sci-fi, now THIS is found family, oughh feelings. argh, tj klune you’ve done it again, a human and his family of funky robots… I love them)

And They Lived... - Steven Salvatore (nblm, fiction, about gender identity and learning to love yourself, read it a while ago but it was very nice)

I Wish You All The Best - Mason Deaver (nblm, fiction, about finding your identity and people who care about you, very cute and sweet)

The Song Of Achilles - Madeleine Miller (mlm, historical, very good in general)

Carry On - Rainbow Rowell (mlm, background wlw in the third book, fantasy, it's a trilogy, basically Harry Potter if it was gay and also better)

Silver In The Wood - Emily Tesh (mlm, fantasy, very pretty, lots of fae stuff and lovely descriptions, it has a really good sequel too)

Pretty much anything by Alice Oseman (all cute and lovely and great, though I've only read Radio Silence so far I hear only good things, Solitaire is on my to-read list)

I Kissed Shara Wheeler - Casey McQuinston (wlw, fiction, it's been a while but I liked this book)

The Falling In Love Montage - Ciara Smyth (wlw, fiction, this book was so cute and funny and deeply emotional it made me Feel way too many things, I'd definitely recommend it)

What Big Teeth - Rose Szabo (a bit of queerness all around, fantasy, werewolves and monsters, this one was pretty cool!, lots of original ideas for the world/character building)

His Quiet Agent - Ada Maria Soto (mlm, asexual, fiction, about like spies but this book was so gentle and sweet I wanted to cry in the best way possible)

Some By Virtue Fall - Alexandra Rowland (wlw, historical fiction(?), theatre drama!! rival romance!! duels!!, a very good read in general)

Don’t Want You Like a Best Friend - Emma R. Alban (wlw, historical fiction, I’m not usually one for regency romances, but I really liked this!!, very cute and lots of drama, and there’s a sequel coming out soon!)

Put On Your Raincoats | Sorority Pink & Sorority Pink 2: Hell Week Initiation (Holliday, 1989)

I decided to give these a look after the Rialto Report published an article about the Pink Ladies Social Club, a support group for female porn stars founded by Porsche Lynn, Angel Kelly, Nina Hartley, and Jeanna Fine, and reading that they made these. As you can guess from the title, it's about a sorority and the usual business they get up to: fucking, sucking, etc. I've never been in a sorority. Because I'm a dude. But I've never been in a frat either. So I only know what the movies tell me. And this one tells that's what they get up to.

But while I wouldn't say it subverts the usual frathouse boner comedy tropes, at least for the first instalment it takes a more relaxed approach to the material. The emphasis is less on pranks and antagonism and more on the camaraderie and friendship between the sisters. In the second instalment we get to the hazing rituals, and even then senior sorority member Sharon Kane insists on safety. But she also says "Psychological terror is far worse than physical pain." So it is not a perfect movie in that respect.

This is also notable for having a pretty stacked cast. A lot of your favourites from the era are here, and at least the core group has pretty strong chemistry. And on the male side we get Tom Byron doing a Southern accent and in the second installment Joey Silvera doing... I dunno. Personally I wish we got a bit more Jeanna Fine. So it is not a perfect movie in that respect either.

Directing duties are handled by Jim Holliday, who I understand is best known for writing notable early guides to pornographic movies. (I've seen his work brought up by some of the more knowledgeable users on here, so I should probably get to it at some point, although copies look hard to find or ruinously expensive.) I won't claim that he brings a lot of style to this, but he does keep things moving along pretty well despite the episodic structure. He also usually has something pink in the frame, usually an item of clothing or piece of decor, most of the time. So the movie delivers on both words in the title. But what really makes this stand out is the dialogue, which is a lot funnier than it needs to be. For example:

"In your case, don't you mean a hard man is good to find?"

"Easy Ed does not have both oars in the water."

"Dr. Cantrelle, I don't refer to my fraternity any more as a frat than you refer to your country as a cunt."

"The immortal Yellow River by I. P. Daily"

"I swear, Lydia, I'm never telling nobody never." "That is a double negative."

And pornographically speaking, things get a lot spicier in the second instalment. Angel Kelly speaks proudly of the pioneering twelve girl daisy chain in the second part's climactic orgy, so make sure you stick around for that.

Decided to do a reading roundup, inspired by @batmanisagatewaydrug​ ‘s own one here! Posted uhhhh like two and a half weeks after January but hey, it’s my blog and my roundup.

This month I read a ton of books but none of them really hit for me - not to say these books were bad (well. Some were LMAO), just probably not the proper time for me to read them lmao. All the books will be listed under the cut (some with comments) but here were the ones that really stood out! 

Standouts: 

As Good as Dead by Holly Jackson: 4.75/5 This was the end of the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder trilogy and GOD what a great series! I’m not going to sit here and pretend this is high art but there’s this special something in this series that makes me love it SO much. Is it Ravi Singh? It might be Ravi Singh. It’s probably Ravi Singh. 

The Wonder State by Sara Flannery Murphy: 4.5/5 I don’t wanna spoil this one because it’s an ARC but I was so pleasantly surrpised by this book. I just think it fucks.

The First to Die at the End by Adam Silvera: 4.5/5 The first book made me sob like a baby and this one did make me cry I admit it. :’) While the first book is probably always going to have the biggest place in my heart, this was a fantastic read, and I LOVE that he went back to show us the very first Death Day and how it impacted the first person who was ever called for it. I definitely have more questions on the actual process so if he wants to pull back even further to the creation of the concept I’d gladly take it lmaooo

The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams: 4/5 So this is why I’m at 30-31 books - I read The Ultimate Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy that has all five books in the same book; since I finished the first book in January I’ll go add it here and it was just *chef’s kiss*. Zany, funny, I finally get that damn “the answer to life is 42″ joke. For some reason I’d die for Arthur Dent. Etcetera.

Arthur James Evans (born March 27, 1942) is an actor who has made multiple film and television program appearances over three decades. He was born in Berkeley. One of his early roles was the first victim in Christine. He co-starred in the all-star African-American drama A Soldier's Story as the memorable brown-nosing character Wilkie. He is known for his role as Leslie Barnes in the action film Die Hard 2. His other film credits include Big Time (1977), Youngblood (1978), The Cracker Factory (1979), National Lampoon's Class Reunion (1982), Into the Night (1985), Fright Night (1985), Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling (1986), Ruthless People (1986), Native Son (1986), White of the Eye (1987), School Daze (1988), The Mighty Quinn (1989), Downtown(1990), Trespass (1992), CB4 (1993), Bitter Harvest (1993), Tales from the Hood (1995) and Metro (1997). Put On Your Raincoats | Dog Walker (Leslie, 1994)

Porn features are to some degree inherently episodic, having to structure a narrative around a series of scenes that serve as its raison d’etre. But I don’t know if I’ve seen one quite like this. This is about a thief who seems to have upset his mob associates for asking to be paid what he’s owed, and the dread of the impending consequences hangs over him. But this is no ordinary mob movie. The structure is less linear than elliptical and recursive. Night and day collapse into each other, locations collapse into each other, even different characters collapse into each other. The protagonist seems less a participant than an observer, and plays that role in most of the sex scenes. Symbols pile up and characters speak cryptically. "The time has come to do away with these symbols. But what am I looking for?" And all the while he’s haunted by a woman dressed like a mourner, walking a dog.

This is directed by John Leslie, who is best known to me as one of the best male actors in the Golden Age of Pornography, but afterwards became a pretty prolific director. I understand he went pretty heavily into the gonzo style with his later efforts (and I can’t say I paid attention to the direction in what I may or may not have seen from that part of his filmography, although I do know another director has praised his use of natural light), but this feels in line with the only other feature I’ve seen from the earlier part of his directorial career, Curse of the Catwoman. Like that movie he bathes this in neon lighting and a heavy sense of atmosphere. The mix of surrealism and fatalism here also reminds me of Corruption, although I’m not sure the atmosphere accumulates as strongly, although I do respect Leslie’s ambition with his narrative and his disorienting, sometimes jagged editing style.

I think Leslie also benefits from handling his actors well. There are a number of good, menacing performances from the likes of Jamie Gillis (seen with a beard and white suit), Joey Silvera (seen with sunglasses that make his stare all the more penetrating), Jon Dough and Leslie himself, and an alluring and mysterious one from Christina Angel as the titular dog walker. I think the weak link here is Steven St. Croix as the lead, although his permascowl and underplayed reactions arguably work for the character. And on a pornographic level, I suspect mise en scene became less of a concern later in his career, but it proves key to the power of individual sex scenes, with a glass wall adding some charge to one scene’s voyeuristic dynamic, low rent western getups adding a sense of mockery to another, and even the typical white wall décor being used to unexpectedly hallucinatory effect.
