Human Reflection
Charcoal drawing of digital collage
47.5 cm x 133 cm
When given the topic "human condition", I decided to use trees as my medium as they are unexpectedly very similar to humans, as both grow and age over time, and go through periods of time filled with challenges that leave scars. The top half is the physical part of trees while the bottom is its reflection over water to represent the parts of people that aren’t physically seen like our subconscious and deepest thoughts and feelings.

The Complexity of Islamic Women
Pieces of paper on a wooden board with a charcoal background
179.5 cm x 122 cm x 33 cm
I created this piece to speak about Islamic Women's issues. There are many layers that you need to look through which become more fragile as you get closer to its core which represents how Islamic women have to put up many walls to protect themselves but as you get to know them more then you will get to know their feelings and aspirations, which are fragile.

Close-up of Tessellation on The Complexity of Islamic Women
Paper straws
I decided to create an Islamic tessellation and placed it in the core of my work which is the most delicate area in the whole piece because it acts as a small layer of protection because it is the only geometric area, making it feel more safe and sturdy, which represents how for many people, not just Islamic women, that their religion or beliefs help them stay grounded and are always close to their hearts.

Experiment with Paper and Light
I was inspired by Mia Pearlman to experiment with the method of using ink to paint strokes onto the paper and cutting out what I see, in order to create an organic piece and then combining them to create a tree-like figure. I used a flashlight to create light in the centre which created shadows due to the cutouts.

Projection of Cut-and-Paste Manipulation
Photo printed on acetate with coloured plastics and burnt paper placed onto it and projected using a projector
I printed a photo onto acetate which was very small, around the size of a film negative. I then used different materials, like coloured plastic, tape, and burnt paper to manipulate the photo. Then I put it through an old filmstrip projector to project the image onto the board.

Abstract Photo Mixed Media
Photo printed on acetate with coloured plastics, burnt paper, burnt acetate, and strings of yarn placed onto it, and projected using a projector
2.5 cm x 3.5 cm
This work is inspired by Dexter Dalwood's Burroughs in Tangier and the photo underneath is a collage I made based on its composition. Dalwood's work has parts that are more abstract which I explored and experimented with in detail. I became fascinated with working with mixed media.

Cut-and-Paste Manipulation
2.5 cm x 4 cm
I was inspired by Dexter Dalwood and Patrick Caulfield. I wanted to have Dalwood's cut-and-paste feel of a collage and Caulfield's simple but bold shapes and colours and using this medium allowed me to experiment with these concepts.

Desperate for the Conclusion
Digital collage created using Procreate
I created this collage to represent how I felt at the end of my first year of boarding school as I was desperate to go back home since I was stuck in the UK due to lockdown. I wanted to be able to directly compare it to how I felt at the start of covid so I used some of the same images, such as the clock which now has hands but it is blurry to show how now time is moving again but it’s constant and is in a loop. This collage is even more simplified as the floor is empty and most things are packed away to show how ready I was to leave. The overall mood is lighter to show how I accepted and adapted to my circumstances.

The Start of Claustrophobic and Chaotic Covid
Digital collage created using Procreate
I was inspired by Dexter Dalwood and how he uses his work to retell events so I created this collage to speak about my experience during covid, specifically the start of the lockdown. I kept the composition on the simpler side opting to use objects to convey the story, such as the bags of trash which represent how chaotic and claustrophobic I felt and the clock with no hands to show how the days felt like they merged into one another.

Illumination of Desperate for the Conclusion
Collage transferred onto plastic and placed on top of light box
Size of A3 paper
I printed out Desperate for the Conclusion onto paper and used photo transfer gel to transfer it onto plastic. Then I rubbed off the paper on the areas where I want more light to shine through and made the door more illuminated but as you get closer to the bed area it gets darker. This shows how leaving and going back home during lockdown was my hope and how desperate I was.

Start of An Idea
Sand, masking tape, scrim, modroc, and painted acetate hung in front of photo placed on top of lightbox
Background photo A4 size and various elements are different sizes
My process up to this point was to slowly add layers systematically to my Abstract Photo Mixed Media piece. But I wanted to create an immersive experience for the viewer with different materials hanging which creates a sense of depth, recording my process. I was inspired by Antoni Tàpies who also focused on the process. He worked with natural materials, which is why I decided to go in a similar direction as it creates a cohesive colour palette but still has a wide range of tones. The lightbox allows the image, which is the collage from Abstract Photo Mixed Media, to still be visible.

In the Burrow
Scrim, sand, paper, modroc, and paint on acetate hung using fishing wire layered in front of The Start of Claustrophobic and Chaotic Covid in front of light box
Background photo size of A3 paper and various elements are different size
I was playful with the different materials, textures, and surfaces while abstracting The Start of Claustrophobic and Chaotic Covid to emphasize the different emotions I felt. For example, in the area of the door in the image, I used white masking tape and then placed a piece of acetate with dark messy streaks blocking it, to represent how I wanted to leave but was physically unable to. By using scrim to represent the bed as it has a very defined texture while allowing it to stand out more. The hole or burrow symbolises the area I felt safe and comfortable in and stayed in most of the time.

Close-up of In the Burrow
The side view of the different layers created an immersive experience that I intended. The collage was transferred onto acetate and placed on top of the lightbox. This is a reference point for where my work started and shows where I created the different areas of abstraction.

Experimented with Painted Layers and Capturing Texture
Gouache paint on paper
10 cm x 7 cm
I decided to choose a small area of the painting which consisted of multiple layers in order to experiment with layers of paint and the texture of the leaves to prepare for Looking Out.

Looking Out
Gouache painting on paper
Slightly bigger than A3
This piece explores isolation and how it relates to looking through. As you can see the person in the window is by themselves and is in a room made of cooler colours while the rest of the painting is warmer making it stand out and feel different and isolated from the rest. Edward Hopper was my main inspiration when it came to the composition as his mundane, and atmospheric scenes allow people to feel part of the moment.

Hope on the Horizon
Painted yarn, scrim, paper, sand, modroc, and cardboard on acetate hung with fishing wire in layers in front of Desperate for the Conclusion on lightbox
Background photo size of an A3 paper and various elements are different sizes
Using Desperate for the Conclusion as the starting point, I abstracted it by using modroc and masking tape which are lighter to emphasize my route of escape which in the original image is the door. The further away you go, the darker and more textured the materials become to contrast between the present and the future. The black string is to show the repetitive days.
