palatawan: the old money families
one of the things that i think makes palatawan really work as a tagalog translation of the world of hatchetfield is the class divide. if i could drive you through manila right now, you'd get it — the high-rises next to the slums, the sheets of metal covering the shanties next to the highway. there's something very filipino about an island with resorts and mansions on one side and a trailer park on the other.
i think the old money of palatawan are the panginoong maylupa, the landlords who bought up the land and built the mansions. so let's start with the people who made hatchetfield their own little satanic paradise:
the waylon family
Agatha and Mathias Flavio - so waylon is from the old english name weland, which probably means "cunning". it's the name of a legendary smith. someone who makes metal implements is a very cool namesake for the family who built hatchetfield. so i went for the name of our own legendary smith, ang panday (which is just The Smith in tagalog). he's a comics character. but it felt too on the nose to just use panday (after all, they're not the smiths, that would be too plain) so i went for his first name.
the perkins/houston family
Ma. Emmanuella de los Reyes Perez - it's emma! yeah, i think she comes from old money — her parents had land that she turned into perky's buds, and she had the freedom and resources to go backpacking as a young woman. we don't see it much from her because emma's trying to distance herself from her family, and i bet the backpacking has sort of roughed her up a good bit. perkins and perez both derive from the name peter.
Ma. Janella Perez Corazon - áte (big sister) janella. i changed her name because jane in a filipino accent sounds too much like jenny, and they could be confused with each other. going into psychology is a really interesting choice for her, because we don't actually have psychiatric workers for our population right now. so i think it speaks to how perfect and pure of heart she seems.
Tomas Corazon - the hugh in "hugh's town" (houston) means heart, and so does corazon. i think it works for a guy with such big feelings, who cares so much about his family.
Timothy Corazon / Tim - this is a personal thing that you may have noticed if you look at how i name my own characters, but i like it when characters have full names that they can derive nicknames from. he can't just be tim on his birth certificate, that's not a whole name. give your babies (characters) whole names.
the murray/monroe family
Rosalinda Iñiga Camella Villar Rivera - you bet i gave linda a long fancy name. camella villar is a reference to an actual filipino land-owning political family, and iñiga is a reference to one of my exes. hey, i can be petty too.
Gerald Rivera - so fancy and yet so generic. he stays in the background and that's exactly where he should be
Rio, Abra, Pasig, and Chico Rivera - all of linda’s children are named after rivers. is it because the monroe also means (the mouth of a) river? i’m not sure why, but i am keeping the pattern.
Roman Milagroso Villar - he just felt like he needed a second name. why not miraculous? it fits his ego. murray comes from an old irish name that means "master", so i picked a surname derived from the latin word for a village. they own the village (the hatchetfield boating society and the honey queen pageant board)
the young family
Sherman and Sheila Cabataan - this one's easy because the name is obviously a nod to their eternal youth. so it's kabataan, "youth" but spelled with a c to make it look vintage. (when the philippines was colonised by spain, the /k/ sound was spelled with a c like it is in spanish.)
so i've already done CCRP and the nerdy prudes (+ max); which section of hatchetfield population would y'all like to see translated next?

girl help! every day I get the urge to design Filipino Servants for FGO but the only design I have for them is very generic and plays hard on the "what survived of them from historical accounts", resulting to some of them manifesting in Classes contradicting their personality (e.g. Saber Rizal but has Caster skills, Assassin Goyo but has Rider attack power and skills), and some of them manifesting because of popular depiction (e.g. Caster Mabini, Ruler Bonifacio, Berserker Luna)
(mostly Servants from the Spanish Revolution. I can throw in some Servants during the American occupation and no further. Anyone beyond that point can get testy. Sorting through historians through their political bias is stressful work already when researching the Spanish Revolution period.)
There are mythological pre-colonial figures as well such as Lapu-Lapu (who killed Ferdinand Magellan), Princess Urduja, Queen Amaya (whose twin sister is a snake), Lam-Ang, and the Bakunawa story. Modern myths are very Komiks based such as Darna, Pedro Penduco, Panday, Varga, and Palos (i only the fantasy ones orz)

Pangarap Sa Pagitan Ng Pagkawala

HAU student leaders hold protest; decry martial law atrocities, historical distortion
Student protesters chanted “Never Again, Never Forget!” in front of Holy Angel University on Saturday, September 23, to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law through candle lighting.
The protest was staged by Tindig Holy Angel University (HAU), some officers of the University Student Council (USC) and School of Arts and Sciences – College Student Council (SAS-CSC), Panday Sining – Pampanga, and few alumni of HAU.
According to the protesters, they wore black to symbolize the period of dictatorship as one of the darkest times in the Philippine history.
Among their callings include “No to mandatory ROTC” and “No to red-tagging.”
While USC School of Education Senator Patricia Ysabel Torres emphasized the whitewashing of the Marcos family by the current administration.
“…isa itong hakbang ng rehimeng Marcos Jr. para baguhin ang kasaysayan at makalimutan ang kanilang mga kasalanan noong panahon ng batas militar [referring to the Department of Education’s recent memo],” said Torres.
Last September 11, the Department of Education Bureau of Curriculum confirmed a memo to remove ‘Marcos’ in ‘Diktaduryang Marcos’ in the new curriculum.
This week, the USC, SAS-CSC, the School of Business and Accountancy – College Student Council (SBA-SAS), and The Angelite have launched online postings debunking myths of the dictatorship.
While similar activity was conducted by several student organizations in Pampanga High School last Thursday, calling for the youth to embrace the role as “custodians of our nation’s democratic values.”
As of now, the Malacañang Palace is yet to issue a statement as the country recalled the atrocities of the military rule of the elder Marcos.

KULINARI NG PINAS
Bacolor, Pampanga https://www.bria.com.ph/articles/10-things-you-need-to-know-about-kapampangans/
https://philippinefaithandheritagetours.com/san-guillermo-ermitano-church-villa-de-bacolor-pampanga/

https://coconuts.co/manila/lifestyle/christmas-season-is-officially-here-stunning-parol-display-in-pampanga-goes-viral/
https://blog.mabuhaytravel.uk/pampangas-best-authentic-foods-that-you-should-definitely-try/
San Guillermo Parish, Bacolor Pampanga https://foursquare.com/v/san-guillermo-parish-church/4ce762d1948f224b4a0cea5d

Nanuntok daw ng kaklase, apparently last week pa pala. Hindi lang agad nakita sa message request.
Hetong si L naman ay feeling attacked. Sabi niya dapat daw may ebidensiya yung nanay na nagrereklamo. Dapat daw may maipakitang pasa o galos.
I had a 6 AM class. Yes, sobrang aga at walang almusal as usual.
We were more than 30 sa room including our teacher, but none came into my rescue. I didn't ask though.
I was traumatized by that experience dahil katatawanan sa kanila ang gender ko and mahina ang tingin nila sa akin. Well, at that time, wala talaga akong lakas ng loob na lumaban sa kanila. Hindi ko sila kaya. Malakas sila.
