In Negative Book, Grzeszykowska paints her body black so as to appear bright in the exhibited negative image. These suspect images, obscure, spectral, and unreal in appearance, call attention to the gap between the reality photography purports to capture and the photographic process itself. Though Grzeszykowska stands out vividly in each scene, especially when in contrast with other figures, the artifice of the image defeats any suggestion of intimacy or invitation to identify with the subject. Instead, Grzeszykowska's procedure emphasizes her isolation from both the viewer and the scene she inhabits. In contrast to these startling negatives, in Negative Make Up, the juxtaposition of the negative, which seems true, and positive, which reveals the deceit, demonstrates how the makeup masks a semblance or vice versa - how, via photography, a convincing illusion of reality might be forged.

Born in 1974, graduated from the Graphic Arts Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 2014 won Polityka's Passport Award in The Visual Arts category. Lives and works in Warsaw.

The primary medium in which Aneta Grzeszykowska works is photography. However, she treats it instrumentally, as a tool for the realization of advanced, artistic and ontological exercises. The artist is interested in the role photography plays in creating and documenting a personal identity. Therefore, in her film projects or doll sculptures, the human figure acquires the shape and aura of a marionette. One of the main topics of Grzeszykowska's works is her own identity, with which she plays on many levels: by erasing her own figure from a family collection of photographs (Album, 2005), or by impersonating Cindy Sherman in her classic cycle Untitled Film Stills (2006). Some projects by Grzeszykowska – like the cycle of illusionist portraits of non-existent people (Untitled, 2006) – take advantage of the possibilities offered by digital image manipulation, while others use photography and film in a classic way by emphasizing the performative dimension of the artist's activities. Photography from Poland is generally not very well known in Germany, although one of the most exciting photo scenes in Europe has developed in the country. The book accompanying the exhibition of Polish photographic art at Berlin's ZAK – Center for Contemporary Art in the Zitadelle Spandau aims to close this gap in knowledge and shows works by young and middle-aged artists. In addition to many forms of aesthetically and formally fresh documentary photography, the spectrum of what is shown ranges from portrait and self-portrait photography to still life and landscape photography to free artistic approaches in abstraction. On the basis of extensive research and in-depth knowledge, the curators have selected positions that allow a look at all aspects of contemporary life in Poland, while also not ignoring the downsides.
