i've been working as a research assistant on a project looking at media depicting "warchitecture" in the yugoslav wars, chechnya and ukraine, and interpreting that as both historico-cultural semantics and as actual media. the project was inspired by and basically predicated on, the work of architectural philosopher/urban theorist andrew herscher, so i have a lot of the ideas from his work fresh in my mind. so with the ceasefire ending and israel's genocide continuing, i feel like it would be constructive to just share a bit from his book violence taking place: the architecture of the kosovo conflict.
herscher was working on his phd in the late-90s when the international criminal tribunal for the former yugoslavia (ICTY) asked him to join the prosecution and be an expert witness on the destruction of buildings during serbia's ethnic cleansing of kosovo 1998/99. and when working in the balkans collecting evidence and writing reports for the ICTY, he realised that relegating the destruction of architecture to an externality of violence was absent of the fact that the destruction and construction of architecture is a productive medium for expresing historico-cultural and political semantics -- invoking ideas of present and historical material conditions and realities, and enforcing them. in the case of kosovo, this was serbs ensuring the alterity of kosovar-albanians, projecting serbian orthodoxy over kosovar-albanian islam, destroying their communities to ensure they could not retain their autonomy, etc. one of the most common instances hersher encountered were the minarets of mosques being toppled, but the building left otherwise mostly intact. this is violence as performance, and as a means of engaging in a cultural discourse to marginalize and eliminate a community. it's a kind of violence which architecture reciprocates and reproduces meaning in.
attached a bunch of excerpts below. consider gaza and the experience of palestinians, and remember that the yugoslav wars ended with 161 political and military leaders being brought before a judge at the hague.

The daughters of Andrew of Greece & Alice of Battenberg.
Sophie (born 1914) was known as "Tiny" as the youngest of the family, until little brother Philip came along in 1921. Cecilie (1911), or Kaikilia in Greek, was usually known by the French variant "Cécile". Theodora (1906) was known as "Dolla" as her older sister Margarita used to call her "dear Dolla" because she couldn't say 'Theodora.' Margarita (1905) was nicknamed 'Zighoi' according to the book Princess Olga of Yugoslavia: Her Life and Times by Robert Prentice.

Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent (born Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark was a Greek and Danish princess by birth and a British princess by marriage.
She was a daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark and Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia, and a granddaughter of King George I and Queen Olga of Greece. Princess Marina married Prince George, Duke of Kent, fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary, in 1934. They had three children: Prince Edward, Princess Alexandra, and Prince Michael.
Princess Marina was born on 13 December 1906 in Athens, Greece, during the reign of her paternal grandfather, George I of Greece. She was the third and youngest daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark, and his wife Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia. Her father was the third son of George I of Greece and Queen Olga, while her mother was the only daughter of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia. As per usual the BRF put on a shambolic display of precedence at Constantine's Service of Thanksgiving 🤡
First let me start out by requesting an answer as to how the FUCK Sarah Ferguson and her nonceband take precedence over A REIGNING KING AND QUEEN?
As much as I enjoy seeing my girl Lady Sarah Chatto take precedence over the play pretend royals that are Pavlos and MC's children, can you even imagine how slighted the BRF – let alone their stans – would've been if the tables were turned and Princess Alexandra of Greece and Nicolas Mirzayantz took precedence over Charles and Camilla?
On to the seating:
How exactly do you have Andrew (a non(ce)-working royal 🤡) take precedence over the Duke of Kent (a working royal)? 🫠 Honest to god, looking at the BRF front row, it looks like he ACTIVELY snatched Edward's seat because it makes zero sense for him to be seated behind the Gloucesters but ahead of the Kents 🙃
This is also just to say: Make no mistake, the next time Harry attends a BRF function and is seated five rows down "because hEs nOt a wORkiNG rOyAL DUH", remember how these weirdos are clearly more willing to let a sexual predator back in the fold than a man addressing the racism his wife endures 🫶
And then we return to Sarah, live-in (non-royal) divorcee – the only one of her kind that apaz assumes the precedence of her (royal) child at an official function – let alone takes precedence over her 🤡 Are we supposed to take this as a sign she and the Duke of Nonce have remarried? Because I dare you to name another royal family where she wouldn't be placed bang last.
On the... family(?) side, we have Alexia, Theodora and Olympia taking precedence over their younger brothers (except for Pavlos taking precedence over Alexia - we can't let the plebs know what they've missed out on by honouring actual birth order) which is... fair... though not exactly reflected in the primogeniture the GRF observes but whatevz 🤪 But then... the spouses of Constantine's children (all aside from ✨ Marie thee Chantal ✨ obvs) take precedence over Odysseus and Aristides? What does that even mean? 😭
Princess Alexandra of Greece (second cousin) and Alexander of Yugoslavia (first cousin once removed) take precedence over Elena, Cristina, Gustav and Alexandra (nieces and nephew) – but somehow not over Felipe and Letizia (thereby honouring Felipe's position as reigning monarch – a position that would since be shat on by Lord 4th on I'm a Celeb 2022) who take precedence over JC and Benedikte (brother- and sister-in-law). Queen Noor (unrelated 🤪) takes precedence over both Gustav and Alexandra (nephew and niece)... but NOT over Elena and Cristina (nieces).
And don't even get me started on the precedence somehow afforded to Chantal Miller... 🤡
#this is not a serious institution#biggest royal family in the world and i can't remember when they've last put on a respectable observance of basic precedence#this the royal family yall ride for?#how are you not embarrassed#british royal family#text

14 for music asks?
14. the last CD/album you bought
OOH i have a cool answer for this one. this is my most recent bookoff haul 😁 mostly nothing crazy. the marvin gaye disc is a live performance
but that last one on the right called HELP was a pretty intriguing find. here's what it says in the liner notes:
"On september 4th 1995 some of the best bands and musicians in britain entered studios all over europe. their intention was that by the end of the day they would have recorded a track for this album, with the aim of raising money for, and focusing attention on, the children caught up in the war in former yugoslavia. At the time of writing the artists lending their support for the project are Blur, Bood Radleys, The Charlatans, The Chemical Brothers, Neneh Cherry, Brian Eno, Noel Gallagher, The Levellers, The Manic Street Preachers, Portishead, Radiohead, Suede, Stone Roses, Terrorvision, Paul Weller and Andrew Weatherall (with apologies to others still to be confirmed). this album is a result of everyone's help. the full track listing is still unknown at the time of writing so open it up, put it on and play it loud."
the final tracklist is on the disc:
thats what i love about thrifting and secondhand stores. youre always gonna find something SO specific and unpredictable

"THE AMEBIX SOUND IS TOO METAL FOR THE PUNKS, THEIR UNAPPROACHABLE APPEARANCE IN LEATHER AND CARTRIDGE BELTS..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on English crust punk band AMEBIX, performing live at the Novi Rock festival in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, c. 1987. Stig in Hampton Row, Bath, UK, and the rest of the band, c. 1986. 📸: ❓
"The band itself does not allow itself to be taken over by the political or the sound agenda of the anarcho scene. Their strongest political motive is that of self-determination. It's just not lectured from the stage, it becomes the driving spirit of their increasingly powerful sound and metaphor-heavy lyrics. When we recently asked Rob Miller whether he agreed with the assessment of AMEBIX as the most apolitical of the political bands of the time, he only replied: "I am honored by this assessment." You sit between the chairs. The AMEBIX sound is too metal for the punks, their unapproachable appearance in leather and cartridge belts seems suspicious to the anarchos. The metallers, on the other hand, probably don't even know that AMEBIX even exists. Asked about the ambivalence towards the scene, Rob explains:
“It had a lot to do with our past. We grew up in the country, we were far from city life. We were concerned with the autonomy of the individual, with freedom also in a literal, spatial sense. I started, getting suspicious and claustrophobic when I met people who drew boundaries.”
-- VICE, "Death is Not a Solution,” AMEBIX Provide the Hymns to Their Own Resurrection,“ by Andrew Richter, c. November 2011

Are you trying to tell me that most people don’t have dreams about historical figures?!
I have had dreams about Andrew Jackson and John C. Calhoun, Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia, RFK and Sirhan Sirhan, Jimmy Carter, and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
Do historical figures sometimes show up in your dreams?

And apparently they're all on mom's side of the family.
Tegan apparently does'nt get too along with the Jovanka side, or maybe Tegan's dad could be dead or disowned? (Or maybe they all live in Serbia\Yugoslavia\the Balkans) Oh, apparently Bill Jovanka died somewhere in the 1980s, thus both girls lost their fathers around at the same time. Likely that's part of why she decided to keep on staying with the Doctor.
And apparently Bill gave the farm to his brother in law.
Richard Frazer né Verney.
Yes, he took his wife's (Felicity's) name.
He's Andrew's son, Colin's father, and Vanessa's nephew!
