Subspecies or Species (and what is this bee doing in Delaware)? (Grammar side bar: I am guessing that the "?" goes outside the parens? Good thing my Mom never reads anything I write giving that she was a teacher). Here we have something that meets the definition of Andrena cressonii subspecies kansensis. In my book (rife with grammatical errors) this seems like a species to me, as it appears to consistently having reddish orange legs and more extensive hair bands than its nominate cousin A. c. cressonii which is less hairy and has no red on its legs (and is common as dirt). A c. k. is a being of the Midwestern plains (or what is left of them) and I have never seen one in the East until looking at Matt Sarver's collection from Delaware, of all places, where it was collected off of Willow. Delaware is admittedly a small state that most people hold no opinion about, but it does have A. c. k. to its name. Photo by Elizabeth Panner. ~~{{{{{{0}}}}}}~~

Bug of the Day
So I spent like an hour and a half sweep netting various parts of my yard for the City Nature Challenge last weekend, and the most interesting thing I found is probably this adorable mining bee (Andrena sp.) that somehow ended up perching on the outside of the net. I did not even notice it until I was on my way to putting the net back in the garage :-). Anyway, the back legs on this wee beastie are just 🔥🔥🔥

Andreana going into heat regularly after joining Rhodes island and only being able to keep it together by locking herself in her room. Eventually asking for suppressants or something to help with dealing with it. She doesn’t realize that every month Specter is shooting up from her sleep and needs to be restrained because she goes into a frenzy no one can identify. Skadi ends up leaving once a month and returning later after the first few times.
Eventually after the events of the Stulfira Navis they return back and go to indoctrinate Andreana into being a hunter and it goes fine for a day or two until it starts a little early. Shes not ready for what sex with the hunters is like, especially Laurentina who the captain had to grab by the throat and throw into her room with skadi to contain her

Large Scabious Mining Bee (Andrena hattorfiana)
A female collecting pollen from a Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis) to serve as food for her larvae in their burrow.
The larvae only eat the pollen from Knautia species while the imago may feed on other teasel (Dipsacaceae) species if necessary.

Taxonomie:
Règne: Animalia
Embranchement: Arthropoda
Classe: Insecta
Ordre: Hymenoptera
Famille: Andrenidae
Genre: Andrena

Fall mining bees, subgenus Callandrena
The top one is a Cloudy-winged Mining Bee (Andrena nubecula)
The other two are species that can't be easily distinguished in the field. They are either the Simple Mining Bee (Andrea Simplex) or the Peaceful Mining Bee (Andrena placata)

It is spring and the Andrena are flying. As far as I know the 1500+ species in this group all nest in the ground and none of the females can sting you if you pick them up (or is that only American Andrena? Hmmm, that statement seems a bit imperial. I should rather say "or is that only bees of the genus Andrena that occur in continental North America." Clearly, despite its wrongness, there is less typing associated with imperialism). Any way here is a lovely Andrena from Slovakia (A. flavipes) (it probably doesn't sting either, but maybe European Andrena sting…?) collected by Peter Šima along the levee of the Nitra River. Note, however this is not a spring Andrena, but one of the members of Andrena world wide that can be found out and about in the Fall. However, Andrena are far more common in the spring. This post is getting aimless and I am going to stop here before I start telling you stories about the wasp nest boxes I have made over the past 2 days. Photo by Cole Cheng.
