Okay dream supergroup (one of my many, many dream super groups). More concretely!!! Johnny Whitney duh, some of the Portugal. The Man guys, and some of the Pretty Girls Make Graves guys. Would be fun if both Whitney and Andrea Zollo (she's the pgmg vocalist riiight) did vocals but this is my bias 2wards bands with 2 vocalists speaking. If it were possible I WOULD like 2 have Cody Votolato and Hannah Blilie also there but the bands already bloated + I love J Clark's drumming as well so it'd be like having 2 choose between like. I can't think of a good comparison rn but yknow what I mean. This is a stupid ramble my bad

Deep Creep does sound like four friends having a good time, albeit with a tinge of unease. On a set of demos uploaded to SoundCloud in April, Andrea Zollo is in fine mettle, developing her impassioned-yet-understated vocals with new affectations: slurry storytelling, bubble-gum nonsense and occasional slips into Lux Interior-esque menace. The songs are equal amounts fun and demented, with a sinister edge bubbling beneath the surface.

Femmespiration Friday: Andrea (Making Graves) Zollo

Greetings, femmes & femme-lovers!

I’m Charlotte, visiting from Mountain Prep, and I am so excited to share with you my femme inspiration:

Andrea Zollo.

But first, I have a confession to make. I started this blog post in March and kept stopping… and starting… and stopping. I thought about backing out because I didn’t feel that I could accurately express why she is my femme inspiration. I have nothing academic or enlightening to add. All I can really say is that Andrea Zollo is just one badass lady who deserves to be recognized. Not only due to my undying love for her, but also for all of the formerly-mopey Seattle teens who idolized her from 2001 – 2007. Also, I've collected way too many photos of her to back out now (seriously, way too many).

Full disclosure: I rarely dress like Andrea Zollo anymore, in fact you could label me as a Prep with rebel tendencies. But I didn't care about fashion until I discovered Andrea Zollo... so you could stay she was the starting point of everything fashion-y I've done since.  

 Andrea Zollo arrived in my world and stole my heart at the tender heart of 16 (2004). I had just gotten my driver's license and my friend, Kim, convinced me to drive to a local music show to see this awesome band that I had heard nothing about. 

Pretty Girls Make Graves

 That band ended up being Pretty Girls Make Graves (haven’t heard of them? Go buy their albums) and I was blown away not just by the music, but the lead singer, Andrea Zollo. Her attitude and snarls on stage described everything my angsty teenage self was feeling. PGMG was promoting The New Romance, and their song Something Bigger, Something Brighter woke me up from the fashion hell hole I was in when she sang:

Make it electric, make it electric Make it electric, make it electric I've got to know I'm still alive

She clearly didn’t give a shit about what people thought, or how she dressed. She dressed for fun- what an idea! There was no difference between her everyday clothes and her stage outfit; it was all the same to Andrea Zollo. Her exceptions most noteably came when they were shooting music videos.  

 Each time she got on stage is was a new orchestration of thrift store finds (way before Macklemore) that became gutter glam, from shredded prom dresses to menswear vests.

She had her staples in those formative years of mine, which I of course copied: oversized shirts layered over tanks, heavy bangs (always taking over her face), red lips, and heavy eyeliner.

She also rocked a lot of bandanas (which I of course started doing).

I even managed to replicate her jerky shoulder dance she would do between verses... now I'm starting to sound like a stalker. 

By the time I turned 17, I had shed my goth-light Hot Topic wardrobe, in favor of band shirts and thrifted treasures. Andrea inspired me to look beyond the mall, and that it was okay to be a little wacky and borrow from the boys. It was okay to be the anti-cheerleader without needing to be in a Hot Topic costume.

Andrea Zollo is also a big inspiration for me when it comes to body image. I was pretty chubby for most of my childhood, and really hated myself around the time I found Pretty Girls Make Graves (as I feel most teens wearing Hot Topic do). I know the Beth Ditto post really hit this one of the mark, but while I love Beth, it was Andrea that I really looked to. Not that it matters because they are both good friends who are positive body image role models:

Moral of the story is that every thrifting/shopping trip since 2004 has been met with the mantras “what would Zollo buy?” and “Make It Electric”. I think everyone needs their own sayings when shopping, and since Andrea I’ve gathered some real keepers.

Imprese, ecco la classifica dei 50 "Best Workplaces 2021" in Italia

Equilibrio, fiducia e serenità da un lato, analisi, studi e ricerche dall’altro: due estremi all’apparenza così distanti, ma al tempo stesso vicini, anzi uniti ed allineati da un minimo comune denominatore, ovvero individuare i Best Workplaces™in Italia, e l’artefice di questa unione è Great Place to Work®. La nota società di consulenza in ambito HR e leader nello studio e nell’analisi del clima aziendale, del benessere organizzativo e dell’employer branding ha annunciato, per il 20° anno consecutivo, la classifica delle 50 imprese nominate “Best Workplaces™ Italia 2021”. Il ranking, integralmente consultabile alla pagina Greatplacetowork.it, è frutto di un attento e accurato lavoro di ricerca durato un anno, periodo nel quale sono state analizzate 128 aziende, che hanno chiesto di partecipare alla ricerca, e ascoltati i pareri di 53.610 persone, appartenenti alle imprese stesse, riguardo al proprio ambiente di lavoro e all’employee experience. Rispetto a un anno fa, cresce di ben 4 punti percentuali la fiducia dei collaboratori delle imprese classificate nei confronti dei propri datori di lavoro e, allo stesso tempo, cresce anche il fatturato delle aziende in graduatoria dell’8%. La classificazione è originata, in gran parte, dal giudizio delle persone a cui è stato sottoposto il questionario Trust Index© che, in un solo anno, è cresciuto fino all’85,79%: ciò significa che I’86% dei collaboratori delle organizzazioni classificate si fida dei propri leader, collabora efficacemente con i propri colleghi ed è orgoglioso delle misure adottate durante la pandemia. I risultati del questionario aziendale pesano per i 2/3 del punteggio finale, mentre, per la restante parte, vengono analizzate le pratiche di gestione delle risorse umane, descritte dalle organizzazioni nel questionario Culture Audit©. La Classifica è stata suddivisa e organizzata in 4 categorie differenti sulla base del numero di collaboratori: aziende con oltre 500 collaboratori,con un numero di dipendenti compreso tra 150 e 499, tra 50 e 149 e tra 10 e 49. “Il metodo che utilizziamo per stilare la Classifica finale è unico al mondo, oltre che universale e consolidato in oltre 40 anni di ricerche, perché si basa sulle opinioni e le considerazioni delle persone appartenenti ad aziende che possono chiederci di essere analizzate e, quindi, di partecipare alla ricerca. I collaboratori rappresentano, senza alcun dubbio, i maggiori esperti di clima aziendale all’interno del proprio ambiente di lavoro – sottolinea Andrea Montuschi, presidente di Great Place to Work Italia® – Sono proprio loro a determinare se l’azienda per cui lavorano possa ottenere la certificazione e poi concorrere per qualificarsi fra i 50 Best Workplaces™. La ragione dell’importanza dei singoli collaboratori è semplice: un «great place to work» può essere definito come tale solo se, all’interno dell’organizzazione, regna la fiducia reciproca tra le persone che danno corpo, presente e futuro all’impresa stessa”. La Classifica legata alla categoria con oltre 500 collaboratori vede al primo posto MSD Italia, multinazionale leader nel settore farmaceutico. Seguono al secondo posto American Express Italia, servizi bancari, e in terza posizione Abb Vie Italia, multinazionale del settore biofarmaceutico. Il podio della categoria con un numero di collaboratori compreso tra 150 e 499 vede sul gradino più alto, per il sesto anno consecutivo, Cisco Systems Italy (telecomunicazioni). A seguire, Zeta Service (servizi professionali), che conferma il secondo posto dell’anno precedente, e Salesforce (servizi informatici). Tra le imprese costituite da un numero di persone compreso tra 50 e 149, si piazza al primo posto Biogen Italia (biotecnologie e prodotti farmaceutici), dopo aver conquistato la medaglia d’argento nel 2020, seguita da Insight Technology Solutions (servizi ed assistenza per computer), e Zoetis Italia (biotecnologie e prodotti farmaceutici) che conferma la terza posizione conquistata anche un anno fa. Infine, tra le aziende con un numero di collaboratori compreso tra 10 e 49 si registra il primo posto di Accuracy (settore finanziario), la seconda posizione di Cadence Design Systems (impresa di software di calcolo), e il terzo posto di Camasia (servizi e consulenza finance con specializzazione nel controllo di gestione). In Classifica sono presenti imprese provenienti da settori molto diversi tra loro: il più rappresentato è quello produttivo, nonostante l’influenza della pandemia, poi viene quello tecnologico. A proposito di quest’ultimo settore, le start-up tecnologiche e le aziende digitali si sono contraddistinte per livelli di fiducia e benessere tra i più alti di sempre: il Trust Index©, infatti, è pari all’88% e la crescita di fatturato media addirittura al 123%. Tornando alla graduatoria, è da segnalare la presenza di aziende del settore finanziario e assicurativo a testimonianza che per costruire un ottimo luogo di lavoro non è necessario lavorare nel digitale. Per concludere, le business unit che, in assoluto, si prendono la scena sono quelle del farmaceutico edell’IT. “Rispetto ai nostri competitor, ci preoccupiamo di ascoltare l’opinione dell’intera popolazione aziendale di ogni impresa per offrire un prodotto finale, in questo caso una Classifica, il più possibile preciso e impattante – sottolinea Alessandro Zollo, Amministratore Delegato di Great Place to Work Italia® – In questo senso, il Trust Index©, ovvero il nostro questionario di clima aziendale, è lo strumento operativo per eccellenza perché ci offre la possibilità di raccogliere e fornire dati  e numeri importanti che le imprese stesse possono poi utilizzare come metro di giudizio e base di partenza per migliorare e crescere costantemente nel corso degli anni. Per quanto riguarda i dati raccolti nel corso dell’ultimo anno, possiamo affermare che l’aumento della fiducia nei confronti dei leader non corrisponde ad un aumento di capitale economico: la correlazione tra i due indici crolla da 0,94 a 0,32 ed è lecito domandarsi che cosa sarebbe successo se i leader delle organizzazioni non avessero scommesso sui propri collaboratori e la loro resilienza – aggiunge Zollo – Scommettere sulle proprie risorse umane e ascoltare la loro opinione avràun’importanza sempre più crescente in futuro e proprio per questo motivo la persona è e sarà sempre il focus del nostro metodo operativo perché il clima organizzativo di ogni azienda, da quella produttive all’immobiliare, dai trasporti fino al retail, si misura sulla base di tre relazioni fondamentali: tra dipendenti e manager, nei confronti del proprio lavoro e dell’azienda e, per concludere, tra colleghi”. Pretty Girls Make Graves - The Teeth Collector (off The New Romance, 2003, Matador)

Cannot think of anything more intelligent to say about this. Apart from wishing that more indie rock was as groove-driven and hooky and expansive and powerful as this. Andrea Zollo has returned to fronting rock bands this year with the interesting Deep Creep and in Jurai's name, it's been WAY too long. She always seemed like a second big sister whenever I listened to this album, and I've missed her voice. Also "decay / your words' acidic taste" is the best spittle-flecked put-down that Morrissey never got round to writing.
