The Murder City Devils – Webster Hall - July 28, 2024
Tumblr media
Formed nearly 30 years ago in Seattle, garage-punk heroes the Murder City Devils don’t play live too often anymore — but whenever they do, like last night at Webster Hall, it should be celebrated.

The Murder City Devils at Webster Hall
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Sunday, July 28, 2024, The Murder City Devils headlined Webster Hall with a supporting set from TERMINATor.
Images of MCD are now available on Bowery Presents’ “The House List” here. The last time I saw the band was two years ago in Atlantic City for a festival called Frantic City. Photos from that performance are available here.

Every Record I Own - Day 111: Blatz/Filth split LP
Lookout! Records was mainly known for it’s lucrative releases by Operation Ivy, Screeching Weasel, and, of course, Green Day. But the label catalog also housed some gnarlier Bay Area bands like Neurosis, Spitboy, and the two bands on this revered slab of vinyl known as “The Shit Split”.
Filth was probably the bigger band of the two, and their opening track “The List” was something of a minor classic in the canon of crust punk. I interviewed Derek Fudesco of Murder City Devils about his history as a musician and he cited “The List” as the impetus for his first proper band, Area 51. And indeed, the Filth side of this LP is a pretty great dose of scummy negative punk.
But for me, The Shit Split is really all about the Blatz side. It’s a gross clusterfuck of shrieked and shouted vocals over sloppy guitars, but it’s operates on such pure piss and vinegar that it’s infectious despite its near absence of melody or musicianship.
Bought this LP back in ‘95 when it was still in the Lookout! catalog. It got reissued by Life Is Abuse when Lookout! went under, then got re-reissued by Alternative Tentacles when Life Is Abuse went out of business.

The Cave Singers – That’s Why
Albüm That’s Why adlı şarkıyla duyuruldu.

PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES - WILDCAT
This live performance of "Wildcat" by Pretty Girls Make Graves was taken right around the release of their final album "Elan Vital". It captures them at their peak performing one of their most driving tracks.

Lunch Hour - Murder City Devils - Rock and Roll Won't Wait
Today's lunch is a short documentary about Washington garage punk band, Murder City Devils.
In 2000 my friend Eric gave me In Name and Blood for my birthday. I had never heard this band before. The first time I listened to it I remember being enamoured with the organs accompanying what was essentially garage rock. It made things a lot darker and that intrigued me. Later that year, we went to see the Murder City Devils at the Fireside Bowl, a legendary dive of a venue back in those days. We stood rather close to the stage. The show was kinetic, explosive (drummer Coady lit his entire drumset on fire with rubbing alcohol and I remember questioning whether or not the Fireside was up to snuff on fire codes, or if I was going to still have hair on my head or a face). I don't think I've sweat as much at a show since then.
After their breakup in 2001 we would come to know some of the members of Murder City Devils through other bands like Modest Mouse (guitarist Dan Galucci) and Pretty Girls Make Graves (bassist Derek Fudesco), but none could ever match the raw of Murder City Devils' live show. If you weren't able to ever see them live, I highly suggest watching this documentary. -a

New Band Alert: DEEP CREEP
Tumblr media
PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES were the band that defined my early and mid-20's; they were the band I went to see religiously every time they played through Southern California. Well, since their break-up Derek Fudesco has remained busy in the Cave Singers as well as the occasional Murder City Devils performance. Andrea Zollo played drums in Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death, but now they have started DEEP CREEP.
The personnel seem to be as follows:
Brian Yeager - Guitar
Jeff Alvarez - Drums
Derek Fudesco - Bass
Andrea Zollo - Vocals
Their first show is scheduled for Monday, March 31st in Seattle. No recordings have surfaced yet but it'll be just a matter of time I'm sure.
Very curious to hear what they have in store.

It's hard to believe that it's been 5 years since Pretty Girls Make Graves broke up. They were the band that helped fuel my passion for music through the majority of my 20's. Guitarist Nathan Thelen joined PGMG onstage for an encore of Sad Girls Por Vida at the Glasshouse in Pomona, for what would end up being one of their final shows. This video was shot by one of my best friends who was standing right next to me. You don't have to listen too close to hear a very loud and pronounced "WOOO" shouted when the music cuts to J and Nathan, that's me.
PGMG FOREVER
