The anthology

What would the Great Detective be like if Sherlock Holmes was a woman? That’s the question answered in Sherlock is a Girls’ Name, an anthology imagining Sherlock Holmes as female, in tall tales that follow the great detective across time and even space.

The stories in this collection, selected by long-time Sherlockian editors Narrelle M. Harris @221b-hound and @atlinmerrick, imagine Holmes in deep space, 1990s Russia, Victorian London, contemporary USA, worlds of magic and more.

Holmes’ many Watsons include ghosts, robots, a young boy who doesn’t speak, a teenage tuba player, a stranger on a plane – and that’s just to start. In each story Holmes and her Watson do what they do best: solve crimes and have adventures!

My story

The Case of the Man Who Wasn’t Dead: Modern-era medium Sherlock Holmes solves the murders of the dead who contact her via her spirit guide, Jane Watson, a nurse who died in 1944.

“You don’t have to be so rude,” Jane said. The light from the kitchen window didn’t affect her, didn’t set her red curls aglow or brighten her pale skin. But she was unfailingly lovely all the same, in that white sundress, with her hair swept back from her face and her lips bright red. If Jane were alive today, Sherlock thought, she’d probably be a fan of glitter lipstick, going around looking like she’d kissed one of Dorothy’s ruby slippers.

Sherlock did attempt not to make a habit of thinking about Jane Watson kissing things.

Andrea Belfi - Eternally Frozen - more low winds (see Jessica Pipe Sextet) but in this case they’re brass rather than reed instruments

Eternally Frozen consists of a series of canon based compositions for brass ensemble, percussion and synthesizer by Andrea Belfi. The canon is an ancient compositional technique in which an initial melody is imitated at a specified time interval by one or more parts, creating illusionary never-ending musical journeys. The work is inspired by the evocative image of the Deprong Mori, a mythological bat with the alleged ability to fly through solid matter by bending atoms by it’s natural skill of audio echolocation. The myth suggests that one of these bats had been “eternally frozen” in a wall of solid lead in 1952 by the researcher of the Rockefeller University, Donald R. Griffith. This story is exhibited in a display at the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles, an institution renowned for both speculative, fantastical reinforcement of mythology and playful and beguiling distortions of mysterious could-be truths. Both the canon and the “frozen” Deprong Mori are man-made illusory simulations of eternity. Their attempt is to create mirages, where the insinuation of facts is more meaningful than the reality. After many years of sonic explorations with percussion, drums, and electronics, Belfi is here projecting himself as a composer through the direction of an astonishing brass ensemble in the realization of these canonic works. There are evident echoes of the works of Arthur Russell, Miles Davis, Moondog, William Basinski, and the Italian soundtrack tradition of Ennio Morricone and Egisto Macchi. Courtney Love, former Hole frontwoman, has recently come forward with more information about her highly anticipated solo album, which is the follow-up to her 2004 debut America's Sweetheart. She also shared her frustration with PJ Harvey, who turned down an invitation to collaborate on the album. Both Love and Harvey were major figures in the rock scene of the 1990s, with Love always expressing admiration for Harvey’s work. Love has publicly stated that Harvey’s 1992 debut Dry remains her favorite album by the British artist. She even once admitted, "The one rock star that makes me know I’m shit is Polly Harvey. I’m nothing next to the purity that she experiences." While Love was careful not to give away too many details about the record, she did confirm that R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe would be featured. The two have worked together before, and Love expressed how moved she was by the collaboration. "Stipe mentioned our collaboration to The New York Times, so I can say it's gorgeous," Love said. "I fell down weeping hearing his voice – it's better than ever! I thought I knew the outcome, but I'm still the grasshopper while Michael is the sensei." Besides Stipe, Love also mentioned that guitarist of the highly influential Echo and the Bunnymen, Will Sergeant would be part of the album. She just couldn't help herself, she said she loves Sergeant as her favorite guitarist on earth. "If you lined up Jimmy Page, Jonny Greenwood and Will Sergeant, I'd take Sergeant every time; it's madness!" she exclaimed. "He's on this record and is taking songs to otherworldly heights. Despite these exciting collaborations, Love expressed frustration over Harvey's silence. "I did ask PJ Harvey to come back – I wanted just one of her great iconic Stones guitar riffs," she shared. "We have a relationship; I've endorsed her over the decades, but she chose not to respond to me. So I wrote her about how f***ing rude that was. Her manager tried to smooth things over, but it's not okay – she hasn't played rock music in 100 years! Her first five albums are great; after that, she ventured into art space (though I do love 'The Last Living Rose,' which feels like a John Donne poem with… WTF? A tuba?)" Love's comments are a mix of admiration and frustration that reveal the complexity of their relationship. She is still a huge fan of Harvey's early work, but she appears disappointed by what she feels Harvey has done with his music, moving away from rock music in his later work. In the same interview, Love also spoke about the direction of her music in the future. She said that she is interested in collaborating with artists from different genres, including rap and pop. Some of the names she mentioned include Kendrick Lamar, Stormzy, Doja Cat, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Snoop Dogg, which indicates that her musical influences are diverse and that she is open to exploring new sounds in the future. Although Love has yet to release an official word on an album, she did give fans some hints during the interview. She mentioned she is working with the well-known producer Butch Walker. This may suggest that the new record will be a bit more professional and mature in sound. In addition to her musical endeavors, Love has been active on social media. In October 2023, she reactivated her TikTok account, where she has been teasing the upcoming album. "It’s Courtney, hi," she said in one clip. "I’m not going to have an official TikTok. I’m just gonna upload some teasers from my album that’s coming out… Christmas, if we’re lucky. I’m just gonna upload some teasers." Further clues about the tone of the album have also surfaced. In another TikTok video, Love characterized the record as "the longest record that's ever been written in the history of rock, so it better f***in' be good, no filler." In 2020, she had already described the album as "very sad," with a focus on minor chords that reflected the emotional depth of the work. Apart from her solo work, Love has also been a part of other musical projects. Just this month, she lent guest vocals to rapper 070 Shake's cover of Tim Buckley's Song to the Siren, showing that she is willing to experiment with different styles and artists. With the soon-to-be-released album, it is quite obvious that Love is fully devoted to keeping her fans hooked and excited. Di conseguenza, anche la musica che mette in scena, trae ispirazione da quell'Umus sociale di ribellione con sonorità molteplici che spaziano dagli spiritual della "Liberation Music Orchestra" alla musica di Charles Mingus, da influenze legate a New Orleans fino al funk tipico della cinematografia anni 70. 

Il collettivo è formato da: Ugo Moroni (chitarra, composizione, arrangiamenti), Andrea Salvato (flauto),  Marco Vecchio (alto sax), Federico Privitera (trumpet), Giuseppe La Stella (trombone), Michele Murgioni (tuba), Daniele Marrone (el. bass), Mattia Bassetti (drum).

My story

I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful anthology! My story is "The Case of the Man Who Wasn't Dead": Modern-era medium Sherlock Holmes solves the murders of the dead who contact her via her spirit guide, Jane Watson, a nurse who died in 1944.

“You don’t have to be so rude,” Jane said. The light from the kitchen window didn’t affect her, didn’t set her red curls aglow or brighten her pale skin. But she was unfailingly lovely all the same, in that white sundress, with her hair swept back from her face and her lips bright red. If Jane were alive today, Sherlock thought, she’d probably be a fan of glitter lipstick, going around looking like she’d kissed one of Dorothy’s ruby slippers.

Sherlock did attempt not to make a habit of thinking about Jane Watson kissing things.

The World University Winter Games started today.

Sofia Val and Asaf Kazimov of Spain currently lead a very close competition. They lead by only .58. Guilia Isabella Paolino and Andrea Tuba of Italy are currently in second, currently only .67 over Lou Terreaux and Noe Perron of France.

Budapest RD -

CPom's RD still looks like the danciest, the most cohesive. it's playful, full of musical details, and skated beautifully. they tied for 1st in base value. it feels like there are some points available if they can put her in the air instead of those cute hops in the ChRS and to have even more build to the end. the judges were in close agreement on them- all the GOE were +2 or +3, and every PCS mark was 8.25-8.75. i wonder what that next step is to get those PCS nudging 9. and to get into +4's

Pirihara divided the judges more- their PCS range from 6.75 - 8.25, and their GOE start at 0, but they are getting a few +4s. the skating and polish isn't quite there yet, but they're selling it and performing to the max

the team tied for 1st in BV was Ignateva/Szemko, the Hungarian team - they train with Barbara Fusar-Poli. the packaging and choreo here doesn't really match the music, which is a thing with her teams - why doesn't she bring in collaborators then i wonder

the only level 3 Paso in the event was by Giulia Isabella Paolina and Andrea Tuba of Italy who train with Valter Rizzo - they're 16/21 yo and were on the JGP last season. their programs are by Massimo Scali, and they look secure in what they're doing - a good start to their first fully senior season, btw this and Lombardia - they said this in an interview recently -

Holly Harris and Jason Chan skating in hold and closer together than many teams in their paso:

every time i see them, i find something new that they do well, but they also tend to make these odd slips and stumbles - idk if that's a mental lapse - but it has to affect their confidence. i hope they can get that part under control. they were the only team in the event with level 3 for both in their midline. in the PSt, the stumble cost them 3+ points which would have had them a couple places higher
