Double Bass Blues
Andrea J. Loney
Rudy Gutierrez
Knopf BYR
Nic is an aspiring musician whose life spans two different worlds--his suburban school where he wows his friends in orchestra, and the busy city streets of his home where he's jostled by the crowd. Nic makes his way home from a busy day at school with a double bass on his back, the symphony of his surroundings in his heart, and a sweet surprise for the reader at the end of his journey. This is a sweet, melodious picture book about how dedication, music, and family can overcome any obstacle.
⭐“Simple language...complex paintings...the perfect literary melody.” —Kirkus
⭐ “harmony of sound and emotion”-Publishers Weekly
⭐ “celebration of Black boyhood and family”-Horn Book

THE 2017 TEXAS BOOK FESTIVAL – A GRAND SUCCESS
Tom Hanks. Photo by Bob Daemmrich, Texas Book Festival.
By Naomi Richard
The prestigious Texas Book Festival (TBF) was held November 2-5, 2017 in downtown Austin, featuring over 250 nationally and critically acclaimed authors using over 20 venues including the State Capitol. The festival was home to 80 exhibitors, live music, local food trucks, family activities, and countless opportunities to meet authors and fellow book lovers.
Below are highlights of a few authors from the extensive list of presenters.
This year the Book Festival drew 2 major keynote speakers. American journalist and the former news anchor for the CBS Evening News Dan Rather, author of the highly anticipated new book What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism; and actor, screenwriter, director and producer actor, screenwriter, director, and producer Tom Hanks author of Uncommon Type. The keynotes sold out in minutes after the announcement was made of their attendance.
Andrea J Loney, winner of the 2014 Lee & Low New Voices Award for her picture book biography Take a Picture of Me, James Vanderzee! (Lee & Low Books), filled the festival with a wonderful children’s experience for the little readers! Loney is also the author of Bunnybear (Albert Whitman & Company), and Double Bass Blues (Knopf, Spring 2019). She lives in Los Angeles, California.
Black Poets Speak Out was launched to rally poets and allies to respond against police violence and injustice. In a brief time, hundreds of poetry videos were posted and shared internationally across social media outlets. Cofounders Amanda Johnston and Mahogany L. Browne and 2017 Pulitzer Prize winner for Poetry Tyehimba read their work and discussed poetry as a vehicle for communication, education, and change during the Book Festival.

America’s racial divide is woven into our country’s history. The issues we’re confronting today—racial profiling, the criminal justice system, the long lineage of white rage—are nothing new. Carol Anderson, author of the National Book Critics Circle Award-winning book White Rage, and Angela J. Davis, editor of the essay collection Policing the Black Man, framed the forces opposed to black progress in America in a discussion on the issues that drive our racial divide.
Founded in 1995 by First Lady Laura Bush, the Texas Book Festival is a non-profit organization. Contributions are welcomed to help produce this popular annual event, the year-round literary events, to support their literacy programs and grants to Texas public libraries. Since its founding, the Book Festival has donated nearly $3 million to Texas public libraries and donated more than 81,000 books to students in Title I schools through their Reading Rock Stars program.

Building a Biography: An Interview with New Voices Award Winner Andrea Loney and Senior Editor Jessica Echeverria
At Lee & Low Books we are always interested in biographies of unsung heroes. Stories of lesser-known individuals who used their talents and overcame obstacles to achieve their dreams and serve their society fill our shelves of published titles. Each year our New Voices Award judges consider dozens of biographical submissions on the lookout for a winning combination of compelling characters and…

Andrea Loney signs Bunnybear at Vroman's
Andrea Loney signs Bunnybear at Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena on Sat, Feb 18 at 10:30 am. Please check the official bookstore website for any changes.
Although Bunnybear was born a bear, he feels more like a bunny. He prefers bouncing in the thicket to tramping in the forest, and in his heart he's fluffy and tiny, like a rabbit, instead of burly and loud, like a bear. The other bears don't understand him, and neither do the bunnies. Will Bunnybear ever find a friend who likes him just the way he is? (Albert Whitman & Company)
Those wishing to get books signed will be asked to purchase at least one copy of the author's most recent title from Vroman's. For each purchased copy of the newest title, customers may bring up to three copies from home to be signed. This policy applies to all Vroman's Bookstore events unless otherwise noted. Save your Vroman's receipt; it will be checked when you enter the signing line.
Event date: Saturday, February 18, 2017 - 10:30am
Event address: 695 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91101

ELADIO AGUILERA @eladio_prkmen Exhibition: Canny Family @vunugallery CANNY FAMILY Eladio Aguilera Christian Bär Andrea Martinucci Alex Selmeci Curated by Nikolas Bernath On the first of April, we were about to open the second exhibition at VUNU Gallery this year and hence continue our international program of 2020. We invited four artists from Italy, Spain, Germany and Slovakia to join us. In the meantime, however, we have all been affected by a new planetary situation on Earth, but only a few of us wanted to admit it. We were looking forward to meeting our guests, to install the exhibition and to celebrate the next opening on our terrace. The situation has changed rapidly, borders have been closed and flights have been cancelled, though art has already been travelling all around Europe for days, heading towards us. On the planned opening day, the last package arrived. We unpacked everything and now the gallery is full of art. It seems to us that the best thing we can do is to install the exhibition and open the gallery - online. "The gallery is no longer the primary exhibition space; the Internet is", writes Loney Abrams in her essay titled Flatland. In many ways, in the context of contemporary art galleries and the distribution of contemporary art, we agree. However, those who know our project also know that it is strongly based on physical contact with the viewer. Many of you come to us regularly for every opening or other events. We highly appreciate it and therefore we are very much concerned about the current situation. Of course, there are currently important challenges ahead, especially in relation to health protection. Yet, we believe that there is still much room for culture and art. That is why we will continue with the VUNU project in a digital space if the situation allows us to so. #eladioaguilera #painting #cannyfamily #vunugallery (en VUNU) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB-fHcOFZ5y/?igshid=q66b5qhtbf1b

Classmates
Colt honored by ALA, Caldecott, CSK, and Newberry Committees!
Kadir Nelson, Class of 1992
‘The Undefeated’ Wins Caldecott Medal, While ‘New Kid’ Picks Up Newbery
It is a universally acknowledged truth that a curious reader in want of a good book needs only direct their footsteps (and questions) to the nearest librarian. Librarians, after all, are always a font of good book suggestions.
So naturally, when a whole bunch of them get together for the American Library Association's annual midwinter conference, you can expect a host of recommendations to come of it. Enter: the annual Youth Media Awards, a slew of children's book prizes announced Monday, including the John Newbery and Randolph Caldecott medals.
Jerry Craft won this year's Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature for New Kid, a book focused on the struggles of a seventh grade student of color who has been sent to a prestigious private school with little diversity. Meanwhile, The Undefeated, an ode to great black Americans illustrated by Kadir Nelson and written by Kwame Alexander, won the Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished picture book for children.
At Monday's ceremony, both books also claimed Coretta Scott King Awards, which celebrate children's books produced by African Americans. New Kid won for Craft's work as an author, and The Undefeated earned the prize for Nelson's contributions as an illustrator.
Monday's win marks the latest in a raft of honors for Alexander, who also has a Newbery medal to his name after his novel The Crossover won five years ago. The Undefeated is among the first books published by his Versify imprint, launched last year at publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
While the Newbery and Caldecott regularly grab headlines, they weren't the only prizes handed out Monday.
Youth Media Award Winners

Newbery Honor Books: The Undefeated, written by Kwame Alexander and illustrated by Kadir Nelson; Scary Stories for Young Foxes, written by Christian McKay Heidicker and illustrated by Junyi Wu; Other Words for Home, written by Jasmine Warga; and Genesis Begins Again, written by Alicia D. Williams.

Brief Summary: James Van Der Zee was just a young boy when he saved enough money to buy his first camera. He took photos of his family, classmates, and anyone who would sit still for a portrait. By the fifth grade, James was the school photographer and unofficial town photographer. Eventually he outgrew his small town and moved to the exciting, fast-paced world of New York City. After being told by his boss that no one would want his or her photo taken "by a black man," James opened his own portrait studio in Harlem. He took photographs of legendary figures of the Harlem Renaissance--politicians such as Marcus Garvey, performers including Florence Mills, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and Mamie Smith--and ordinary folks in the neighborhood too. Everyone wanted fancy portraits by James Van Der Zee.
