FLORALIA II from Sabrina Ratté on Vimeo.
Video and soundtrack composition: Sabrina Ratté Sound design and mix by: Andrea-Jane Cornell
Inspired by the writings of Donna J. Haraway, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Greg Egan, the work plunges us into a speculative future, where samples of then extinct plant species are preserved and displayed in a virtual archive room. Through editing and visual strategies, this archive room is sporadically transformed under the effect of interference caused by the memory emanating from the listed plants, revealing traces of a past that continues to haunt the place. Floralia is a simulation of ecosystems born from the fusion of technology and organic matter, where past and future coexist in a perpetual tension of the present.

Gideon Johnson owns the place, he has done since his brother passed away last august, rest his sweet soul. His sidekick, as it is, is Doctor Phillip Corchester. Second in command is Carlie Munson, who doubles as the Site Supervisor for Development.
From there, weve got the head technicians, Dr Thomas Hill, Professor Frank Davies, and myself, Alexander Blaize-Cornell. Next are the AudioLux engineers, Jane Gray and Gregory Smith. They interpret our results- without then we'd be a shot in the dark.
Of course, we cannot forget Andrea, Connie, Charlie, Forest and Gretham, our wonderful and perfectly perfect cleaners. Theyre standing back there now, give em a wave folks!

Drawings of Andrea Constand during the Cosby trial by Jane Rosenberg, Christine Cornell, Ted Michalowski, and Lauren Tamaki
After I came across this bit from Tamaki’s piece in the New York Times, “Sketching The Bill Cosby Trial”:
This was the first time I had ever been to a trial, let alone to draw one. There were three other, much more “official” courtroom artists there, all of us with the same goal: to quickly transmit sketches to the news outlets that sought our pictures.
I don’t really know much about courtroom art, but since Tamaki’s piece was so much about being a novice in the courtroom, I thought it’d be interesting to collect images from the other more-seasoned courtroom artists, and, in particular, gather a series of images depicting the same people.
I also sought out a few interviews with the other artists. From an interview with Jane Rosenberg:
Famous people are always harder to capture. Everybody remembers what he looked like as Dr. Huxtable or whatever, but you have to really capture the way he looks now. He has aged a lot, and I have to show him as he is. I never glorify anyone and they usually don’t look too good under fluorescent lights. I’ve done all the Cosby hearings and pre-trials. One of his lawyers bought one of my sketches.
In contrast, here’s Christine Cornell:
And Bill Cosby? Drawing him is as easy as “zip zop wop boopity bop,” as the former Pudding Pops pitchman would say.
“He’s like a gargoyle, very tragedian features, so expressive,” artist Christine Cornell said. “It draws itself — all you have to do is get a little glimpse of him, and there’s something rich there.”
Looking at the different drawings reminded me of how interesting it is to throw somebody really talented into a novel situation—Tamaki drew (or at least posted/shared) things that some of the seasoned veterans wouldn’t have drawn (mainly because, as Rosenberg says, most sketch artists are there to do a very specific thing: draw an image that captures the room that media can use in lieu of photographs), like this drawing I love of Kristen Gibbons-Feden's hands:

Peter Marino
Peter Marino.
