Last Christmas party of the year tomorrow (before actual Christmas), and my job is to provide my famous stuffing balls for the buffet. I do a veggie version too for this crowd, and I have been slowly perfecting it for years.

Just made up the veggie stuffing mix ahead of shaping it, and I don't want to boast, right, I wish to stay humble, Tumblrs, but I am a god of cooking

Rainy day fried rice experiments! Testing three hypotheses today:

Daikon leaf furikake is good in fried rice.

Fake meat is fine after 2 years in the freezer.

Ajitama marinade is a good fried rice seasoning.

And all three were proved right! That's great news for my budget (wasting less and preserving) and also for eating less meat :)

The leaves for the furikake (whole process here) came free with a ¥200 daikon. I froze half of the furikake in a block and still have about a quarter left. The quality wasn't really affected by 6 months in the freezer—there was some ice but it didn't taste freezerburnt. It also cut/crumbled apart easily without defrosting. Nice.

The fake meat is Toffu brand yakiniku protein (old photo), which at first I did *not* like, but then my husband unknowingly bought several on sale and then we forgot about them. But this was the last one! It didn't look like 2 years in the freezer changed it much.

I rinsed off the sauce and diced it roughly. I liked the pea-sized pieces best—they felt meaty, albeit not identifiable as any specific meat. Any bigger than a pea and you might notice a spongy quality, and also the flavor of the marinade comes out.

So now my single portion of rice is looking more like a meal!

Mixed up the rice with the leaves and Toffu so the moisture would contribute to the crumbly texture you need for fried rice. Then I fried some onions, carrots, and frozen peas with a bit of powdered chicken stock. When that was done, I added the rice to the pan and seasoned everything with the ajitama marinade.

I had about 50 ml left from yesterday and didn't quite use it all. I might use the rest on some bean sprouts... Since I'm reusing a marinade for animal protein, whatever I do, I'm gonna make sure to cook it through.

The marinade is almost identical to the furikake seasoning, so I was sure the flavors would work, but it turned out a little too sweet. I added a big splash of Chinkiang black vinegar and some smoked ghost pepper. Much better!

To finish, I also beat 2 eggs to cook in a well in the middle, and minced several very wilty green onions to throw in once the heat was off. Et voilà!

Proper fried rice! Very tasty. A filling meal for two people from just one serving of rice, and now I'm smarter than before I cooked it, and also my freezer is less chaotic.

I don't think some people realize how big of an impact ochako had on the war. Toga had hundreds of thousands of clones ready to kill anyone in their way, it would've been devastating. Ochako stopped that disaster and saved a villians heart in the process. She's so cool‼️‼️

I grew up playing some metroidvania Flash games (the Robot Wants series in particular is what I remember most fondly) but had never played any Metroid game up until now, so I started playing the 2D Metroids last week when Zero Mission came out on NSO and I went through them all in release-ish order (ZM as my starting entry, then NES, GB, Super, Fusion, AM2R). I absolutely loved Zero Mission, Super and AM2R (I liked the others a bunch too; imo Fusion's linearity felt justified by the story progressing as you played and also just this raw feeling of constant tension) but then I really did not like the way Samus Returns felt 1-2 hours in (of all things they kept from the GB original it was the fucking screen crunch, and the circle pad just does NOT feel good for this; movement felt wayyy too sluggish in a way that feels typical of 2.5D games to me, and the shooting combat just got completely replaced by the melee counter which I did not like) so I just kinda skipped it and moved on to Dread (which I'm still playing now) and while I enjoy the way Samus's movement feels a lot more (minus the stupid trajectory-locked walljump from Fusion), I don't think I like the game's overall design all that much.

Literally every fucking attack deals 100 damage so you don't get any room for error whatsoever during boss fights, because you can only take like 5 hits before you die; tanking your way through damage always felt like a risk for higher rewards or a way to get something you weren't meant to get earlier on, but now the numbers feel cranked up wayyyyyy too high. You don't get to try and figure out a boss's attack patterns halfway during the fight and learn AS you fight, instead, you have to die a million times when you almost figure something out but failed the execution because every single action requires you to hold three buttons simultaneously and juggle these button combos around constantly. And the game throws a boss at you literally every 10-20 minutes and locks you down one-way paths every single time so the game barely even lets you explore, like, this is literally just a boss rush game at this point and half the bosses don't even reward you with anything. Super and ZM felt like they were actively INVITING me to break the game and go against the game's intentions and even made me wish to replay the games at some point in the future to take things on differently, and I totally understand what made those such genre-defining games. Dread just completely isn't what I was hoping it would be (also where the hell is this game's MUSIC)
