we get so caught up in mass change that we make no change. we get so caught up in this idea that by doing something we change everything, when that's not the case.

everybody on earth could boycott. the reboot could get 0 streams and she would still be a transphobic piece of shit because whilst, yes, boycotts are about mass change, we can't change a person's morals and her pockets are already fully lined.

what you can do, is stick to your own morals. because mass change isn't the only worthwhile change.

one person not watching the show does not make a tremendous impact, of course not. but one person posting about it online and receiving 10k+ likes? that makes a difference. that makes a different to how safe people feel, that makes a difference to those 10k people who now feel justified in engaging, that makes a difference to the people IN these spaces who want to facilitate a welcoming community.

and yessss, there's no ethical way to engage. i can talk about jkr as much as i want on tiktok and yet when i post about her characters, it is promotion.

it's about doing the least amount of harm possible. because one post and one comment section of people saying how easily they'd abandon their morals for some content? That makes a change.

that makes a massive change to how welcome we feel in these spaces.

and i am so Tired of the "one person doesn't make a difference" mentality - we've all been there! i've said it too.

but (1) nobody is asking you to be the only person to do it, that's why we have these conversations. (2) it's evidently not one person when everybody falls into this mindset,,, maybe something could be done? (3) that's what you say, and then you go to facilitate talks. you don't use it as an excuse to do nothing and cause harm

and most importantly, one person can.

you can make a difference in your corner. you can make a difference with the people around you, with your account, in this space etc etc. you can not talk about the reboot, you can delete pro-jkr comments, you can make it clear where you stand (and not even loudly! you don't have to be loud about it, you just have to be Consistently On Our Side)

we desperately need to free ourselves from the idea that mass, widescale change is the only valuable change and instead start thinking about all the small, seemingly insignificant changes we could make that have a massive impact on a fandom space.

because you can make a difference. to the people around you, and to the space you're engaging in. it's just that you're too focused on alterating everything that you don't recognise the other ways you're causing harm.

harm is harm. no matter how indirect. and i really wish people got that.

at the end of the day, i don't care who watches it. you do you, i'll simply know you're not someone to associate with. but i DO care who posts about it, because then it's abundantly clear that you have no respect for this space, or our comfort. you just want some likes,,,

i don't care who watches it, i care that i have to sit back and see people show just how little they truly care about our existence if they get some sparkly new content.

at no point does the mdzs novel consider nie huaisang morally grey. just because he gets away with what he did doesn't mean the story condones his actions or considers him a good person.

the only thing separating nie huaisang from the majority of the supporting cast's upper class hypocrisy (read: jiang cheng, nie mingjue, lan xichen, jin guangyao, jin zixuan etc.) is the fact that huaisang doesn't genuinely believe that what he does is righteous or justified.

huaisang knows what he did wasn't "right". he knows he used his own class and power to make his brother's murderer fall from grace and suffer tenfold. he's the only one who doesn't have an excuse or some inherent reason on hand when he's questioned.

part of it is because he's trying to avoid actually getting anything pinned on himself, but nie huaisang never once actually tells wei wuxian at the end of the book that jin guangyao deserved what happened, or that whoever did orchestrate everything "must've had a good reason".

nie mingjue, jin guangyao himself, jin zixuan, and jiang cheng would've said the former if they were in huaisang's position. the latter is lan xichen's go-to answer for these sorts of things.

some readers may think this is morally grey of nie huaisang, or that his circumstances were complex -- and while i personally disagree, my point here is that the BOOK lumps him in with all his other gentry peers. he is deeply entrenched in society’s cruel game of politics and cyclical rumors.

the book considers exactly none of those people as truly good. the book is very clear about what it considers right and wrong, and it very clearly slots huaisang with his manipulative proxy revenge scheme into the latter category.

Headcanon: Chilchuck and his Bad Takes on Literature

i think chilchuck would be like my mom in the sense that he wouldnt like sad stories. dont get me wrong, cautionary tales? absolutely fine. they serve a purpose to him which is to tell people "dont be an idiot and do this or else something bad will happen"

generally sad or angsty stories though? no point to him, and in his perspective its really confusing how people just read things that make them sad. like whats the use of reading something if its just gonna make you sad. whats the lesson? its not even real so it doesnt help anyone.

whats the point in making yourself cry when you could just avoid that entirely by not reading it at all?

but the one of the biggest reasons why sad stories exist is to let you release all the built up grief in you. to send you something to let out all your emotions in a healthy way. catharsis. empathy.

even when i dont relate to the tragic experiences in some stories, several ones ive read have lead me to realize that im in a bad situation or that im following in the footsteps of the character suffering. its like a wake up call.

and making yourself cry isnt inherently a bad thing. if crying allows you to let go of building pressure and tension in you then thats good!

but chil wouldnt see that. of course he wouldnt, hes avoidant of most situations that would allow him to release emotion, and fearful of letting his mature (read: repressed) persona slip.

hes someone that runs away to quick comforts and distractions at the earliest sign of issue. hes already been in too many horrifying situations, dealing with another is a pain. and he knows denying everything and refusing to look at the situation doesnt help, but it definitely provides a quick and easy happiness in the comfort of ignorance.

because of this, reading something made to make one empathize with and confront these bad emotions is defeating the point of his cowering. if he faces his issues, even if only through the perspective of a story, he'd have to deal with acknowledging that things are bad and need fixing, and he'd feel terrible and guilty in the moment - which of course is the worst thing that could happen to a person (his thought, not mine).

which is why i find the concept of him being/becoming a tragedy himself at the same time as this headcanon soooo interesting. imagine the irony of him bashing on the protagonists of tragic stories for acting on emotion and impulse rather than logic, when he himself has fallen victim to irrational thinking while in grief.

cause... thats what people do when they grieve. they lash out, make bad decisions, ruin themselves, ruin others.

for a tragedy to be prevented, the protagonists would have to change fundamental parts of themselves, and act perfectly rational when under extreme stress. and chilchuck holds himself to these kinds of unrealistic standards because he unwittingly believes he can handle it all.

he cant, obviously. we see it for ourselves in his relationship with his wife. they were doomed from the beginning by chils already-established avoidance and lack of emotional vulnerabiltiy (and whatever else his wife had going on).

this is all just to say that if you told him about orpheus and eurydice, he'd probably be one of those idiots trying to point out the "plot hole" that he couldve "just not looked back" and "just trusted her"

We also know that many Israelis and Jewish people, both from the country and around the world, are seeing through these lies and calling them out. We know that many young Israeli people are choosing to spend their days in prison rather than support the IDF and participate in the massacre of the people in Gaza. So I think it means something when someone as prominent as Charles chooses to say nothing, especially since he's been vocal about his criticisms of Netanyahu in the past, so not sure why he's choosing this hill to die on.
