favorite thing about the group: they are performers and they will perform like their lives depend on it. they are top of the class when it comes to this and tbh at this point i can't see any group taking the title from them (besides veteran performers that came before). svt are at home on the stage, may it be concerts or music shows, and i think this aspect is where they shine the brightest and are most at home. the closeness of their group comes through best there too. they are performers, entertainers, singers and dancers, and sometimes, if the situation aka svt themselves will it so, actors. and they are amazing at all of it.

something i’d like to see from them: more music like attacca / rock with you. another attempt at an album concept like face the sun but fully invested down to every part of the media / visual rollout and even album topics. just a tighter narrative than face the sun and i'd be good. less hybe-y music again. i am all for them going in a new direction and don't need them to chase the music they already released, but i would love something that isn't falling into hybe's bad music choices.

Hello everyone! 

Some basics about me: 

My name is Ace 

I use she/they pronouns, but I’m cool with being referred to as pretty much anything other than “man” (and insults ofc), so like “bro”, “dude”, “queen”, whatever works for you. 

I’m bisexual! As a fanfiction writer, this comes in handy imo because I can write for both girl groups and boy groups romantically.

My sun sign is Libra, my moon sign is Virgo, and my rising is Sagittarius.

In case you couldn’t already tell from some of my writing, I live in the US. I’d prefer not to share any other information about my location, though.

I’m a college student. I’m working on my Bachelor’s, but I haven’t picked a major yet. (So yeah, be warned that I can’t get stuff out super fast all the time.)

My hobbies

Idk if this counts as a hobby, but I am obviously a kpop fan. I’ve been into kpop for a surprisingly short amount of time in comparison to some of the other writers on here (since late summer/early fall of 2021). 

I absolutely love music and any art related to music-- singing, instruments, both contemporary and classical dance, and I’m learning how to produce songs (I actually got into this because of skz lol). 

There’s just one issue: I’m terrible at all of those things. I’m definitely built for mental activities, not physical ones. My voice is pretty terrible, too. I have a guitar and a piano, but I still live at home, so the amount of noise I can make is limited, so I haven’t gotten too much practice on either of those things yet. 

I love reading and writing! Yes, even outside of fanfiction. I stick to YA and fantasy novels for the most part, but that’s not a hard and fast rule. I don’t read as much as I would like to though since I struggle with motivation (mental health tings lol). 

Other than that, I enjoy baking, journaling, astrology, Dungeons and Dragons, attempting to learn languages, and ofc being lazy sometimes and just watching TV.  

The groups I like!

My favorite groups are Stray Kids and Seventeen!

I tend to like groups that have some role in producing their songs, seem like people I could vibe with, and show support for causes I support (ie, LGBTQ+ rights, addressing racial injustice, women’s rights, animal welfare, etc.) 

The groups that I casually stan are Tomorrow x Together, Oneus, Ateez, Xdinary Heroes, Twice, Itzy, Mamamoo, Dreamcatcher, Blackpink, (G)-Idle, Kep1er, and IVE.

Some groups that I’ve been wanting to get into are BTS, Wei, WJSN, fromis_9, Purple Kiss, Loona, IZ*ONE, Pixy, Gfriend/Viviz, Billlie, Day6, A.C.E, BTOB, and The Boyz.

I wouldn’t say I really have biases, there are just certain members that catch my attention the most when I’m getting into a group (ie, Bang Chan from Stray Kids or Vernon from Seventeen), but as I get to know a group better, I like them all equally.

Review on BTOB’s Special Album: Outsider

Hey everyone! It’s the 30th of August and you know what? Vocal Kings, BTOB dropped another set of masterpiece entitled “4U : Outside”! Have you listened to the full album already? Me? Yeah of course, this is one of my most awaited comeback after Kingdom. Let’s have some few commentaries and review in each song in the album!

1. Dreamer –

Howkayy, so BTOB started the album with Dreamer and yeah, this song is such a bop! It’s a perfect song to listen whenever you are losing your hope or confidence or if you are asking yourself if you should continue pursuing your dream amidst the situations going around you. A line in the song says that “Even when you can’t see (what’s in front of you) and the world is staggering…. even if it doesn’t go the way you want to, even if it keeps going wrong… Do what you wanna do, It’s all up to you.” I love these lines in the song, because it makes me feel so motivated, that I should continue whatever I enjoy doing because after all this is my life and no one should control it aside from me.

2. OUTSIDER [Title Track]

If you are a melody for a long time already, I bet this kind of song is new to you. Coz that’s what I am feeling! I’ve been a BTOB fan for almost 5 years and I’ve seen the dance, ballad, jazz, pop tracks of btob but this is my first time listening to a jazzy-rock-pop track with some touch of saxophone sound. It is so refreshing to hear! The message of the song was good to, it seems like the main character in the song was feeling so tired of his daily routine which made him think that he’s not a human anymore rather a robot. The character here want’s to be an outsider and he doesn’t want to be like anyone else, he wanted to be free and basically just like what’s the message of the first song to do what he wants to do.

3. Can’t Breathe

Basically this song is an after break up song, where the other party is missing his/her former partner. Unlike the first two songs, if you will search for the lyrics of this, it might be sad of course but if you will listen to it, it still feels refreshing, and that’s one of the things I like in BTOB the most, the way they create songs in which you will truly enjoy but you’ll be surprised if you try to search for the lyrics because the message is kinda saddening. But nevertheless, this is also a masterpiece!

4. Traveler

Yes! Its another motivational song from our boys! Traveler is really good to listen whenever you feel lost or you feel so exhausted in life, (for me) One of the lines in the song that I really liked is “Throw away all the negative thoughts (go away) have a positive mindset (make it a habit) one step at a time” and this one also “This is not the end of the dream, Yes we are travelers, anywhere, anytime, go until the end, keep only good memories” Its these lines that makes me feel motivated to continue my dream or my goal, and it is okay if I failed because I can go one step at a time.. slowly but surely. Our life was being compared to a traveler, we may go anywhere, anytime, we might get lost but remember its not the end of the trip!

5. Waiting 4U

Another sad and a song about waiting coming from our vocal kings. Yes Waiting 4U is all about waiting for that ex-lover to come back again. I specially love this song because Hyunsik wrote this before enlisting in the military, so it can be a song for melodies that are waiting for BTOB to comeback completely. It also has a catchy melody that after your first listen you’ll be singing it for the rest of your life (LOL) vocals of the members where pretty much highlighted in this song too!

6. Finale: Show and Prove

If you watched Kingdom probably your heard this song already, because its Btob’s final song in the final round of the said competition. Basically, it is rock-ballad genre which really suits Chang sub’s voice. The song is all about BTOB’s journey from the start up to the present, not just their journey in Kingdom but their journey as a group. A line in the song says that “10 years and still going strong… if you miss out you’ll regret it… This is for the haters, get lost I’ll see you later” It says that they’ve been through a lot and you should pay attention to it, because they will continue to show and prove it to all even to all the haters. I love this song so much especially when I first listened to it because it gives me “the greatest showman” vibes and I like that show so much!

I don’t know but one thing for sure, why I like BTOB so much, it is not because of their looks, if its for the looks there are many boy groups out there that has so much visuals compared to this group, it is not also because of their performance or dance because yeah, they debuted as a dance group but didn’t continue it actually, I really love them because of the songs they are creating and its message too. I feel like most of their songs are talking to me and saying that “hey everything’s gonna be okay!” One proof of that is this album, because most of the songs in this album motivates me to go forward and chase my dreams. LOL from context, i’m gonna guess best friendship among idols? in which case, i think monteen is definitely it LOL but i also adore svt’s and mx’s friendships within their respective groups as well like i believe all of them are soulmates and i just !!!!! love all of their dynamics. i also love love love ukiss’ friendship. those boys hang out with each other so much and so clearly love each other even tho they’re no longer in the same group ;u; basically i love my ults LMAO

I HATE IT LMAO i’ve always found it cringey and i usually can’t stand it bc usually it’s just secondhand embarrassment express. i think i’ve been desensitized now bc of how goddamn long i’ve been into kpop but i still am not the biggest fan. i think the only aegyo i can stand is jooheon’s (AEGYO KING) and woozi’s oppaya aegyo LOL other than that i’m like ....god why

AHHHHH LOL yes i have, several times! i met ukiss back in 2014 and got to take a picture with them (which is in my header), and i met kevin again during his concert last year! i got to talk to him and hug him too and it was just AH AMAZING HE’S SO SWEET. i ALSO got to go to a hi-touch with 2AM back during kcon 2013 and i also got to go to a hi-touch with day6 in 2018 (i chickened out of greeting jae even tho i really wanted to go like HEY WE’RE FROM THE SAME HOMETOWN) i ALSO ALSO got to hi-touch with a.c.e last year and HARU JONGIL ALL DAY-ed with chan which was actually so fun! anyways i think that’s about all the times i’ve met an idol? which, now that i look at it, is a lot LOL

oh man there’s no way i can count the number of groups. basically i can name all 2nd gen kpop groups, a bunch of nugu groups during 2.5 gen/3rd gen, any groups that went on the unit, and a fair amount of groups in 3rd-4th gen. i think around like 2017 ish? i stopped paying as much attention to new groups bc i got busy with college so i’m pretty unfamiliar with people nowadays. but honestly if you’re curious just throw a random group at me and i can try my hand at it LOL (also i know more boy groups than girl groups sorry ;;)

OOOOOF THIS IS SO HARD. there’s SO many good lyrics out there! but here’s a few that i particularly love:

1. in the first official ukiss activity since hoon returned from the army, hoon hugged soohyun and then soohyun tried to kiss him in return on live broadcast, and jun just sat off to the side, covering his face bc he was too goddamn embarrassed LMAO (and then soohyun sulked on twitter later asking if hoon didn’t want to be kissed by him and hoon had to do damage control and say he did, he just got surprised LOL).... honestly ukiss is so wild i expected nothing less from them once they reunited haha (x)

2. seungkwan getting to live out his successful kissme dreams and dance bingeul bingeul (the song he auditioned with) with ukiss themselves. truly one of my favorite fanboy moments (x) (on a related note: i especially love this kissmecarat moment i technically started)

3. monsta x and btob cleopatra game. no words needed LMAO (x)

I’ve known Pentagon and all the members for a while and I always tend to like most of their music, but I haven’t dove much deeper into their other content. They do have a weird special place in my heart, but they’re not a top group where I watch or keep up with everything to do with them.

(why does no one have great ballad comebacks anymore?? their ballads are so good). - or maybe retro, any retro! i mean triple h did it so well, and critical beauty?!

what i like most about them: i think they’re just solid, they have so much talent and have had to deal with a fair amount, but they consistently put out strong comebacks. their concept constantly shifts, but in a good way - they truly can pull off anything! the stage presence and facial expressions truly outshine!

a concept i wished they’d try: i know they’re on the path but let’s go like vixx full horror, but i’m also in love with this like classy vampire/ knight thing they have going on with a dark edge so basically just more of this please. maybe i just want even more feelings in the mvs and theories - go all out. i’d also love to see a bright concept, something fresh - a summer song if it has to be, but maybe a nice autumnal ballad. i want them running down a beach or leedo in a nice winter coat and a jumper okay. i’m talking btob missing you. 

what i like most about them: they’re like a breath of fresh air. i love the whole vibe/ concept they have and it just works so well and it’s something i’ve missed with newer groups. they have so much potential and are only getting stronger. i also love their chemistry as group and just watching them interact.

Hyunsik's Rendez Vous concerts have come and gone :( Both were a little over 2 and a half hours long which seems like a nice, long concert considering it was a solo concert. First, can we talk about the setlist?

I thought he might do a few different songs on day 2 but he didn't which was fine because this setlist is FIRE. As a twitter mel pointed out-

And those English songs he chose. He picked songs that match the theme of his album- the scientist, fly me to the moon, moondance, gravity, believer (he's a believer in aliens and UFOs), and free (same song he performed on the last day of the this is us concert). He's just brilliant. He's so good at creating a complete masterpiece. Think about Brother Act and how the songs are organized to tell a story like a play. He did the same with his setlist. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention how much I adore him and his taste in music because yes, we love the same songs/artists.

Did he sing well? Of course. But he was nervous and it was cute. On day 2, he messed up on the piano intro of "say you love me" and was visibly frustrated even though fans kept telling him it's okay ^^ He even said-

lol the cutest. He did have translated lyrics of the English songs he sang (and I think all the songs he did??) which was very considerate imo.

During his last ment, he was thanking the band (yes, he had a live band on stage for the whole concert), the fans, his parents (who were in attendance!) and forgot one little thing.

Sungjae and Peniel showed up on day 1 while Ilhoon came on the second day. Both penjae and illie appeared on stage with hyunsik to perform "all wolves except me" and "just tell me." mostly, they served as hyunsik's hype men though lol.

Sungjae said of the hyungs' solo concerts, hyunsik's was the coolest 😎 he said it twice too and I believe he genuinely meant it. I've said this before but sungjae's always had this sort of reverence for his hyunsik hyung, an admiration for his composition and song writing skills. Anyway, the highlight of the weekend for me was when ilhoon backhugged hyunsik right before his 'please be my baby' line from all wolves except me 🥰

omg SO cute. Okay, the last thing I wanted to cover- "someday." I had only just gotten over wanting to cry every time I listened to the song because it kept reminding me of the this is us cryfest concert then this weekend happened and I'm back to square one. im hyunsik, mr.tough guy, i-don't-cry-for-just-anything guy, got choked up singing "someday" on day 1 and cried on day 2 😢

He let melody do the rap line parts of the song (and they did SO well 👏🏻👏🏻 gold stars for everyone) but when it got to the ending parts, he couldn't belt out the high notes because he was overwhelmed with emotion 🥺 everything from the hard work he put into the album, to his first ever solo concerts, to the support and love he's received has meant so much to him. He also referenced his impending enlistment 😢

He was truly so happy and I couldn't be happier for him ❤️ he accomplished one of his dreams as a singer songwriter and it must've meant the world to him. He sounded as amazing as ever, looked hot af rocking out in his leather jacket, and was able to fully show off his abilities as not just an idol but as a true musician. Really, his guitar riffs during "gravity" and "swimming" were divine and unforgettable.

Imstar is really the brightest star in the universe 🌟 and of all the things I can identify myself as, I can say that being a btob stan and a hyunsik stan is the proudest thing I am.

Hmn...so much things to fill in on re: fandom on here. Everything else you will find in @kg_0917. 

I left this space hanging for quite a while. And now it’s time for a quick-ish catch-up. Bullet points are the funnest, yes! I do the same occasionally on my blog on blogger too. Haha. 

Just a few things:

If you remember I’d left this space off as a jpop/jmusic/ent fan and a western music/ent fan. I’m that and much more now after only TVN and Red by HBO are the only ones I can access on our TV along with Animax (and Animal Planet). Those channels are the ones dictating me rn. lol. So in bullet points:

-my kpop phase started with Beast, they’re now Highlight. But stuff happened---it has much to do with Bigbang’s Seungri and other shady, powerful people---so now I’m sticking to Pentagon, BtoB from Cube Entertainment and both Infinite and Golden Child from Woollim Entertainment. So in a nut shell, lately, I’ve been watching some Kdrama here and there but I’m a bigger fan of KVariety shows because of Infinite’s Kim Sunggyu. Currently, I’m watching his Knowing Brothers guesting and have watched Like Likes Like/Kkili Kkili in raw...err...

-I’m still jpop biased. Produce 101 JP just finished last year and I followed it as much as I could? I like JO1. Yes. But I’m Miyajima Yugo-biased mostly. I love Puchimen, yes. And yes, I was late into stanning Wannaone where Produce 101 goes...I also followed Produce X 101 and feel sorry and disappointed with whatever falling out’s happened thereafter. X1 didn’t deserve being disbanded like that. Produce X 101 was such a heart warming show with the brotherly relationships between the trainees and the national producers’ representative, Lee Dong Wook pushed in the forefront. I felt down with the decision was to disband X1. :( It would’ve been fun to follow them and their growth as celebs, idols after Wannaone had such a good run before them. 

Also, yes, I have all of KR Build’s episodes on my pristine-ish new laptop rn. I’m just waiting for the right time to start watching and finishing this one before I go onto ZiOh and Zero One. I also need DVD-Rs to burn these in. >.< I have to take good care of this laptop because it’s the first I’ve bought with my own money I’ve saved from work and all. Yes. Where tech is concerned: I’m thinking of investing on a Microsoft Surface or a Samsung laptop next. I’m trying to avoid anything made in China...yet...err...for several reasons. So yeah, we’ll see. A Mac would be a good investment but I think their quality isn’t as good as before so I haven’t decided much there yet.

-lastly, now that I’ve come full circle from western pop to jpop to kpop and even to local music in general...I’m sick and tired of the jpop vs kpop and vice versa war...thing. It’s starting to feel old now that I’m into all three. >.<

FIRST OF ALL:

I do not hate BTS at all. However, I do hate ARMYs. Not all armys just before I get messages saying “NoT aLl ArMyS”. I do hate ARMYs like you, the ones that give ARMYs and BTS a bad name. Let me guess? You’re one of them ARMYs that believe the boys are yours? That they can’t date because they should focus on you? You’re one that believes BTS is all k-pop is.

WAKE UP CALL: K-POP IS NOT BTS!

BTS was one of my first groups, however ARMYs did help drive me away from them. Again, not all ARMYs, just the immature ones like you who give them all a bad name. You wonder why ARMYs became one of the most hated fandoms? I have nothing against the 7 of them, they’re amazing with what they’ve accomplished and I absolutely, hands down, wish them the best and hope they continue to make massive achievements and make the world proud.

DO NOT BE DISRESPECTFUL BECAUSE THEY’RE YOUR FAVOURITES

Now I won’t be surprised if I get a lot of replies talking about how “it isn’t all ARMYs” which I’ve already said that I know or “but other fandoms do it too” but we’re not talking about them necessarily. Such as, commenting about BTS EVERYWHERE. You get them on other groups videos (especially on YouTube), on their Instagram lives / VLives, Twitter etc (just look at all them reporting Baekhyuns account). It’s so disrespectful to be always talking about BTS on something that is about a different group. You even get them where K-POP isn’t even mentioned, you have to know your boundaries! AGAIN NOT ALL ARMYS, I KNOW!

Now to slightly go off topic.

LETS START WITH:

- Don’t discredit other groups because they’re one of the “big 3”. Many groups trained for years, overcame struggles, worked hard and fought for their debut. Not only that but they also work hard to keep active and not disband, they work hard to have what they have and that shouldn’t be took away because “BTS came from a small company”.

Guess what? They’re not the only ones either

Block-B & B.A.P (as 2 examples) came from “small” companies [basically not from the “big 3” is what I’m saying]. They overcome A LOT!

These two amazing groups overcame lawsuits against their companies and stayed together, Block-B filed a massive law suit and yet their leader, Zico, still managed to keep that group together and continued to produce and sell AMAZING songs even when they changed companies (very amazing to be able to stay as Block-B even after leaving and joining another company FYI). Did BTS do that? No. Will I discredit them because they didn’t have that hardship? No.

Just because they come from different situations doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be counted. Many groups have struggled and gone through a hell of a lot, even if they are part of bigger companies but you can’t discredit hard work because of where they come from, to show you how stupid that sounds it’s like you like saying

“Well it doesn’t matter what Einstein did because he was ALREADY smart anyway.”

See how stupid that sounds? Would you discredit him for all of his hard work because he was already in, what some may say, a more advantaged place? No. It’s just silly.

NEXT:

Let’s start off when ARMYs try to say that BTS are legends and “_____” are just old or trash etc.

Yes, BTS have done so well but they’re not legends, not yet. They’re still a fairly new group, I’m not saying they aren’t amazing, because let’s be honest, they are! However, you CANNOT say that they are more legendary or “better” than groups like H.O.T, MBLAQ, TVXQ, Shinhwa, BigBang, SHINee, Roo’Ra etc. When other fandoms say that them groups paved the way for your favourite BTS, they’re not being disrespectful but they are telling the truth.

Do you really believe BTS would have come this far if it weren’t for all them groups? Maybe. Maybe they would have, maybe they wouldn’t have but we don’t know. K-pop became what it is and known because of them legendary groups! BTS may now be helping pave the way for newer groups too but never ever try and disrespect an older group and say that they had no impact on the industry.

Remember: BTS looks up and admires these groups such as BigBang!

I again, do not hate BTS (in fact I have something about them coming out soon that had been requested).

LETS MOVE ON TO: PRODUCING ETC

A lot of ARMYs that are toxic always bring up the fact that they [BTS] do everything themselves. Now, again for examples I’ll use Block-B and B.A.P first.

Zico - one of the best rappers and producers in the industry. Him and Kyung have produced all of Block-B’s albums. He writes his own lyrics and music.

Yongguk - with his latest songs, he directed, edited, produced, wrote the lyrics, arranged, mixed and mastered it. Now, that takes serious skill too.

A hell of a lot of groups & artists produce their own music / own lyrics / own choreography etc so don’t try and say someone else does it for them all.

ANOTHER THING:

I feel like I’ll get a lot of hate for what I’ve said [especially seem as I’ve went off on a tangent] but I feel like you’re very mad that I don’t post BTS but why should I? It’s just like when you get hate for saying that you don’t like BTS or you prefer other groups? Why do you feel the need to attack? It’s okay for you to say that you dislike so and so etc but as soon as someone says they don’t like your favourites you go mad? Grow up.

WHAT ABOUT VIEWS?

Another reason I don’t necessarily post about BTS is because they’re everywhere already. Nearly every blog posts about them so why is it such a bad thing if I don’t? Again [im making assumptions but oh well] you’re probably one of them ARMYs that thinks it’s all about views, hm? Always on about them breaking records well let me tell you

NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT VIEWS

Just because a video has more views than someone else’s does not mean they are better nor does it mean they’re more popular. See, a lot of ARMYs watch the videos to get records and are always STREAM STREAM STREAM while I’d rather watch it because I want to enjoy it and enjoy the music, not once does it cross my mind that “this video needs to get 1M views in 5 minutes” or “they need to beat _____!” Sometimes I believe that videos do deserve more views but I will never put another group down because they have less than my favourites.

My name is “TOPBAP” as in T.O.P of BigBang and B.A.P - so, literally nothing on my blog has anything to do with BTS so why should I post about them? Lol. I know I went on a tangent but it just pisses me off that everything has to be about BTS. I will maybe, occasionally post about them but I like to post about the groups I love the most. A SHORT PART 2

A really really long reflection 2/3

The second part in my long, reflective essay. If you haven’t read part 1 (it’s a snooze admittedly), lemme summarize: racism within American society is long and runs deep, it will not be erased overnight; in pop culture and entertainment, Asians/Asian-Americans have never been taken seriously in post-WWII America; the rise in popularity of anime and jpop and the Internet eventually leading to the globalization of kpop. We are currently at 2016.

We last left off in 2016, where BTS was gaining some major traction worldwide. During this time, other kpop groups were making their moves in the States. GOT7 had their FLY Tour shows in the United States July 1-11th 2016 and were doing tons of press interviews to promote the concert. The kpop convention + concert (KCON) had steadily been growing in popularity since its first con in 2012 with a 2016 lineup that featured Seventeen, BTOB, Ailee, Crush, Dynamic Duo, BTS, Day6, Mamamoo, and Eric Nam at the New York convention and  Amber, SHINee, Block B, Dean, GFriend, IOI, Girls Generation TTS, BTS, Eric Nam, Twice, Monsta X, and Astro in at the LA convention. EXO had their EXO’lu’Xion Concerts in the States from February 10-21st, 2016. 

All in all, it became very clear that kpop had an audience in the United States and it wasn’t listened to by just Asian-Americans anymore. The audience became diverse, with people of all ages finding groups that appealed most to them. 2016 saw the year of the announcement of One Direction’s indefinite hiatus, which meant there were teenagers and young adults who were looking for new things to listen to, causing a small shift in fandom culture. I say small because kpop fans and Directioners famously had a lot of conflict, particularly on Twitter, and many Directioners would be xenophobic and racist towards kpop fans and their favorite groups with comments such as “You listen to ching chong music,” “You can’t even understand what they’re saying,” and so on, so I think the overlap between Directioners and kpop fans was very minimal. 5 Seconds of Summer, another popular band in the West, had announced a hiatus around 2016/17 and I believe this was where a lot of new fans came from. 5SOS had an audience of relatively “emo” and “edgy” teens who look for something different and tend to be more open minded, against the “mainstream” groups like One Direction. A lot of 5SOS fans shifted into kpop during the band’s hiatus, from what I’ve seen on Twitter.

However, racism is not just an American problem, it’s global. And within kpop and South Korean culture, racism and colorism run almost just as deep. This was no secret to many Asian-American/non-Korean Asian fans or to black fans. Many groups have incidents of blackface, saying colorist comments, allegations of cultural appropriation, and saying n*gga. A common defense fans would come up with when confronted with the scandal would say “they didn’t know any better,” “they don’t have black people in Korea,” “get over it, it isn’t hurting you,” and many more excuses. As a result, this tends to cause a divide between black kpop fans and non black kpop fans. The discussions of racism within kpop tend to go one-sided, with black kpop fans feeling as though they are silenced and ignored by other fans, idols, and companies. Pop culture in America often takes things from African American culture and acts like they are “new” and “fresh” and “trendy” which leads to kpop idols adopting these things as well to seem cooler. 

Back on BTS, they were no strangers to racist scandals. Leader RM debuted with a fro-hawk-like style, did a rather poor imitation of Stevie Wonder while wearing dreads and sunglasses, and said that he was surprised with how dark fellow members were when he first met them. No formal apology directly stating what he had done was ever issued, so it can be assumed that Bighit Entertainment, the company in charge of BTS, brushed it off. Despite this, the fandom would continue to grow on their main platform of Twitter. 

Twitter is the most immediate way to find people who have common interests as you and to keep up with your favorite celebrities and BTS established early on that they were good at keeping up. Posting little videos of day to day life, interacting with fans often, and posting selcas almost daily, ARMYs were able to feel close to BTS through these interactions. ARMYs would also find other ARMYs and they built a community full of fandom jokes, fanart, fanfiction, and so on. The momentum continued into 2017 with the release of WINGS and its repackage You Never Walk Alone. The MVs for Blood, Sweat, and Tears and Not Today broke Youtube records at the time and they were to go on to another world tour for WINGS. 

2017 is also when some major issues within the fandom began being discussed. Stan culture within itself wasn’t new and while it provided positives such as giving people a community online, it was unforgiving to those who were not within the fandom. ARMYs had a history of fanwars against the other biggest fandom, EXO-Ls and both have done terrible things to each other. In late 2017, African-American rapper CupcakKe had tweeted stating that she would like to have sex with member Jungkook. Subsequently, ARMYs harassed her and said everything in regards to her size, to her being black, and slutshaming her. The abuse was so bad that she deleted her Twitter for some time.* RM and African-American rapper Wale collaborated on a track and some ARMYs accused Wale of just using RM/BTS for clout. Around the same time, however, BTS themselves were making progress within the United States. They had been invited to the Billboard Music Awards to accept an award for Top Social Artist and that same year performed DNA at the American Music Awards, both firsts for a South Korean group. 

*I’m ending this part here because as I was checking the dates for the CupcakKe incident, I watched a video which talked about when CupcakKe returned to Twitter to call out the double standards of how fans can tweet things like “I want Taehyung to cum on my face for 365 days” without a blink but when she says “I want to jungkook to fuck me,” she gets harassed. I made the crackhead choice of checking the comments and I was honestly disgusted. Here’s some screencaps of what I read: 

Now I obviously am trying to remain completely unbiased in this history rundown and will hopefully give my full opinion in the final reflection, but this shit is what disgusts me. CupcakKe is a grown ass woman and uses her social media however she damn well pleases. Literally her whole brand is about a big, beautiful black woman being openly sexual and clearly these commenters and those who upvoted don’t understand that. They do not understand the actual trauma black people have to deal with when they are called dehumanizing things, especially as a public figure on social media. “Oh she’s just looking for attention,” “Ignore this and vote for Mama!” It literally has my blood boiling as I’m typing this. THIS is why black women feel unsafe talking about their experiences with racism, slut shamed, double standards, etc. Because NO MATTER WHAT, people will try to silence them. And yes, I know it’s a small fraction of the fandom but the fact that there’s even HUNDREDS of people who think similarly really is telling. And I looked at the replies too and not many people were actually defending her AT ALL and those who were weren’t getting much love.

The ultimate bias: Like a tsunami, Lim Jaebeom has come crashing in and taken my heart for his own. Unlike any other love I’ve held for Jungkook and Chan, Jaebeom is literally the man of dreams and fantasies. Intelligent, hard working, humble, talented, quick witted, a demon of a dancer, a siren of a singer who self deprecates like no one I’ve ever seen and isn’t afraid to take the piss out of himself. I can’t with him, so much so that I my chest tightens when I think about him. It’s over people, I’m sold to the devil himself. To the devil incarnate, Lim Jaebeom. 

The ultimate bias wrecker: Chan from SKZ. He was my ult until Jae came barreling through, so obviously he’d be my ultimate bias wrecker. I hold so much soft, endearing love for him that I honestly have to hold myself to calm my rapidly beating heart. He’s... he’s... lovely. 

Favourite Kpop song: Be With You, off Jaebeom’s solo mixtape Def. Volume 3. Trust me, you’d fall in love with him too once you give it a listen and learn what the lyrics mean. The man’s a hopeless romantic. But after that would be Fire by BTS. No other song can hype me up like that song. So much so, that I had it on repeat before I played my opening game at the Dodgeball World Cup this year. My team took the win and I silently owe it to Yoongi screaming BULTAOREUNE in my ears.

Hard or soft stan: Both. Yes, I know it’s a cop out of an answer, but this girl is a switch. A messy little switch who needs to be thrown around then cuddled right after. It’s an interesting life. 

Backstory to how you got into kpop: I was in a dance crew at the end of high school and all of university, and I got into it when my leader decided to choreo to Big Bang’s Lollipop. After that I’ve just bumbled along listening to random songs here and there until Taehyung’s Singularity video was throw in my face and my love affair with BTS began from there. Then SKZ stepped to the plate. Then GOT7 sauntered in and ruined my life.

okay so when ticketmaster announced that there was going to be a group photo option for the astro ny fanmeet i hauled my ass to the gym for the first time in three years and ahHHHH: a binu version 

okay so we know bin goes to the gym fairly often

eunwoo,,,,,,,,,,,, does not, 

i mean he probably does but for the purposes of fic let’s ignore that

it takes a lot for eunwoo to go to the gym 

mostly because he doesn’t like to exercise around other people bc the people who go to the gym regularly are gym rats and they all are hella fit and he doesn’t want to be the only one puffing away on the elliptical 

and so he locates the most deserted gym on campus bc hey if nobody goes there it lessens the chance of running into someone right?

cue eunwoo going to the gym at 11pm at night bc hey, that’s when everyone’s doing their homework or preparing to go to sleep right? who’s going to be at the gym?

he hopes 

eunwoo climbing onto the elliptical and putting his music on and starting  a forty minute cycle 

also eunwoo being hella bored bc all he has to look at is himself 

in the mirror

which i mean, isn’t a bad sight but it’s also kind of boring
