Best 2023 BL Side Couples

Every now and then the side couple steals the show, and you find yourself tuning in for the 2 minutes they get per episode versus the actual plot. Here are my faves of the year:

Moonlight Chicken: Li Ming ❤️ Heart

While this series may not have made my top 10 this year, this couple did. I'm a sucker for "irresponsible person learns how to be responsible through acts of love for someone who is physically impaired" story lines. (See also Last Twilight.) So every sweet gesture that rebellious Li Ming made to make deaf Heart's life more joyful and inclusive, including learning how to sign, made whatever was going on between the lead characters, Jim and Wen, an afterthought.

Kiseki: Dear to Me: Ai Di ❤️ Chen Yi

I love when the smitten one gives up riiiight before their crush is like Oh wait, I like you too! Theory of Love is another example of this, but KDTM did it better. You never really grew to hate Chen Yi, and understood why it took so long for him to see Ai Di as more than a friend. Baby boy was not really giving off crush vibes. More like in desperate need of therapy vibes. Thankfully, Chen Yi was immune to Ai Di's hostility, proving he was his perfect match.

Never Let Me Go: Ben ❤️ Chopper

There was so much going on in this drama that this pairing barely got enough screen time, and yet by the end of the series, I was daydreaming about them moving abroad together and living happily ever after. Loving the Chimon x Perth era. Hope to see more of it.

Unintentional Love Story: Kim Dong Hee ❤️ Go Ho Tae

I actually found the main pairing a tad meh, and was far more interested in the childhood bffs turned strangers subplot. I mean, the minute Ho Tae attempted to learn Spanish to impress Dong Hee, who fantasized about having a Spanish lover, I was hooked. I could watch an entire spinoff of these two with flashbacks to their youth and how their bond originally formed.

Fic exchange recommendations

It's that time again, the midyear JB fic exchange is almost over, the author reveal is just around the corner, and with that in mind, here are some recs for you.

It was a good crop of stories, and chef AUs were plentiful, and here are the stories that really spoke to me. (Definitely check out the whole collection, there are tons of stories that could use some love).

Depth of Fiance - My wonderful, wonderful gift fic! My mystery author took my prompts (While You Were Sleeping AU, Artist AU), and made something that hits just right. Not too soft, not too angsty, just perfect.

Afraid of Diving In - Brienne first meets Jaime when she's crying on a beach, and he's terrible, but they grow up and he's slightly better. A fun, moving, sexy ride to the end.

Seasons of My ... - a Modern AU where the keep meeting and discovering new things about each other. Brienne is a photographer who is quite adept at capturing her subjects' true selves. Gorgeous.

where the spirit meets the bone - Wow, was my first reaction to this fic. I overlooked the tags, and I'm glad I did, because I might have looked away, but ah, never read a LSH fic like that one, and it hasn't left my thoughts since.

if i should fall behind (wait for me) - Regency AU, where JB are childhood friends who reconnect as Brienne is looking for a husband. I'm a total sucker for the regency AUs, and yep, this one worked on me too. It's great.

All the Lights Still Burning - a Long Night AU, beautiful and sad but with a happy ending they deserve.

Somewhere to Begin - JB meet at a rehab facility. Short but very moving.

Who Is Left - a modern arranged marriage AU. JB get married to end a war, and they have to get to know each other while coping with the aftermath of the fighting. Brienne POV.

petrichor - a short but breathtaking missing scene from the Riverlands where they bond during a rainstorm. Great stuff.

Dance Break - the KPop fic. I know nothing about KPop, but getting to learn, and getting to read this, what a treat.

by such means - Persuasion AU. So, so good, the longing, the tenderness of the Austen story is all there, and it's great.

The Iron Throne Challenge - Redemption Island - I have a lot of fondness for Reality TV AUs, and this one is no exception. Love the setup, and hope the author keeps it going, it's a lot of fun so far.

close to the bone - one of the chef AUs, great setup, very curious to see where it leads.

before an immense sky - A Season 8 canon divergence, I'm not sure where it's going, but the writing is superb, and I'm enjoying the journey.

• After stalking her to find out what she do and don't like he makes the perfect courting gift for her. A beautiful necklace for her and held her hand then asked "Sho'ree my love I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. You've been there for me through thick and thin, the hard times and good times and I wanted to ask with the blessing od your parents will you be my mate?"

• She said yes and he was excited and overjoyed I mean over the moon. After they share their first kiss he goes to his new spirit brother who was a outcast but no more telling him about what happened. He tells his mom and dad and siblings Neteyam was happy for his little brother finally getting the woman of his dreams.

• Dates are swimming together, eating dinner together, holding hands while swimming or walking around in the beach talking about their day or future together. By them I mean him he's going in from talking about getting their on hut 🛖, getting married, planning for their first baby.

One Piece: ep: 4 spoilers

oooooooh Zoro back!

I mean, hit me where it counts. This guy has the nicest back! Like dang, find my weak spot and take advantage of it.

Also what a sweet backstory! I'm such a sucker for childhood friends and this was so nicely played. Nothing like an eternal promise to kick each other's ass to go the distance. Though I am suspicious of the 'no body' death. I mean, sure, it could just be because its a backstory but I'm too manga trained and expect her to show up in the third or fourth season at this rate.

I also love how only the main characters have colorful hair and every. other. character. just has normal colored hair.

I really like how this show blends manga and real life but I'll admit, I did snort laugh at the Black Cat crew when they changed into their 'pirate outfits'. Someone went shopping at a Halloween store for after holiday discounts. Still that's a minor quibble and I enjoyed their mutual swordfight with Zoro.

Also it was nice that Luffy got to be the one to take out the Black Cat leader. I appreciate the way they let him use his brains and come at it, literally, sideways.

I'm also still really enjoying Luffy. So often Positive Protags can get annoying after a while but there's something so pure and healthy about the way the actor puts his heart into the character that Luffy is endearing and inspiring instead of wearing thin on me by this point.

I appreciate that the rich girl wants to do her own thing and be a doctor.

Poor Coby. He's got pink anime hair so he's doomed to have the story eddy around him. He's trying to do what's right and Blondie isn't helping matters. Though if Blondie and him team up, between his intelligence and Blondie's knowledge of how the world really works they would be a formidable team. I wish Coby could have at least turned in the Black Cat guy and his crew.

Grandpa?! I LOVE it!! No matter where it goes, its going to be great for the story.

We need to get Nami a girl friend though because she bonded so fast with rich girl. Girl obviously needs some female friends.

Overall, I rate this episode a thumbs up! I'm still enjoying the characters. I'm still having fun. And that is the ugliest ship I've ever seen even if the way Luffy got it really was perfect for the character.

Caleb Widogast (Critical Role). undisputed favorite character in any piece of media, he’s my entire world. literally a perfect narrative story, an emotional character exploration of grief and found family and time itself. profoundly sad man but also filled with so much silly sweetness that makes the sadness even MORE painful. he's a friend, he's a lover, he's a pining man, he's of the empire but not a friend to the empire. he's MY boy, he's a magic man, he's trying to be the man his parents believed he could be. i can cry (and have cried) about him for hours on end but i’m not making this list any longer. ("hi caleb... how are you doing today?" AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH)

Gale Dekarios (Baldur’s Gate 3). omg another sad wizard? sorry i have a type. wyll also belongs on this list but i’m hopelessly drawn to gale so i have to pick him. mama’s boy? cat dad? big wet eyes, a little suicidal and extremely devoted? i don’t know that i’ve clutched my heart harder than when i saw his act 2 romance scene for the first time. i think it also just pulls at my heartstrings that his relationship with tav is so showing of his kindness regardless of whether or not you romance him. even platonic gale is so ;-;

Ann Takamaki (Persona 5). i fought about putting yusuke or ryuji or even zenkichi but this spot has to go to ann because she's just so. perfect. the first arc of p5 is the BEST hands down and she's literally one of the biggest reasons why. the writers end up ruining her but the way she grows even in that first arc... her confidant scene with the line "i'm just a lonely, scared girl..." BREAKS ME. she's a treasure, she's strong and kind and wants to be a light for others while not giving up on the things that make her 'girly.' and her love for ryuji as best friends is one of my favorite dynamics ever.

Artemis (Hades). i love artemis in general, i grew an attachment during my greek mythology kid phase and never let go so i'm obsessed with every iteration of her in media. but artemis in hades has my favorite visual design in the game combined with her quiet sweetness :') and her willingness to have a family bond with zagreus because she's also an outcast who's overwhelmed by her other family members. and then to be a total badass of a goddess, ugh love her.

Katagawa Jr. (Borderlands). okay this one is funny because i honestly love katagawa as an OC more than canon... like canon treated him pretty badly and if it was based on that alone then august tftbl would be in this spot. but the POTENTIAL... ohhh the potential... youngest son born into the highest echelon of one of the most powerful companies in the galaxy, but to CEO parents who see them only as property?? and puts barcodes on the back of their necks?? and katagawa jr being the desperately lonely, attention-seeking son? don't get me started on him and naoko... genuinely my OC now. i took him from canon.

Julian Devorak (The Arcana). this one always embarrasses me to talk about because it's like a romance visual novel game. so let's make it quick. but julian is unironically such a good character, i'm a sucker for the way he loves his little sister more than anything in the world. also for being a silly pirate plague doctor who wants to help people, blames himself for a past he can't even remember, and trips over his own heels being so madly in love. the outfit and eyepatch too, 10/10.

Crona Gorgon (Soul Eater). the definition of 'nonbinary baby' LMAO- but seriously, i instantly fell in love with their design when i first watched. one of the best ever, including ragnarok's design being a part of them. being so powerful but so pained, just such a sad soul and it's so interesting to watch them on screen. i love a character that seems silly and awkward and then also can turn very scary/cool. brief shoutout to stein though, i almost put him on here instead because his design and fighting style are just peak >>

Mad Maggie (Apex Legends). my first ever apex love was horizon, but idk when maggie came out i just fell in love with her personality? she's SO funny to me. i also love her and fuse's backstory, and i think her tough attitude but capability of being kinda sweet as well is cute (although i genuinely just adore her as a mean character too. let women be meaner. she's funny and hot about it). her kit is also very fun even though i'm bad with it, i love riot drilling halfway across the map when i play her. her voice is 10/10 and even her theme music is banger.

Undyne (Undertale). undertale still has one of the greatest narratives in all of gaming history and i will die happily on that hill. sorry. undyne was always my girl, her being the badass knight (that everyone assumes is some scary guy), her theme music is still one of THE best video game songs ever. her design is amazing, finding out that she's papyrus's friend and that she's in love with alphys, her backstory with asgore. all amazing character beats. and that's not even mentioning the genocide run... "for the sake of the whole world... I, UNDYNE, WILL STRIKE YOU DOWN." ugh.

Prince Canute (Vinland Saga). gah i haven't even watched season 2 yet because i'm terribly behind. BUT. oh my god, i think canute's monologue in the snow in season 1 actually fundamentally changed my brain???? and the way that i think??? like i felt something crack within me. i actually gave a talk about that exact scene in an animation class i had once. anyways i loved watching him on screen and watching him change... watching him be so sad... not to mention his design is just very very pretty. can't wait to see my best friend canute in s2 i'm sure nothing bad will happen right.

TOP 5 OFMD AUS (not counting yours which is PERFECT)

(Oh, you! Thank you very much!) Now, THIS is a top five I can sink my teeth into. In the GOmens fandom I did some pretty substantial fic rec lists back in the day, when I had things like energy and time, so picking just five is gonna be tough...I will do my best! There is such a wealth of creativity in this fandom!

First: Leda House and the Kraken 'Verse by @dragonmuse (Usually M, some E, some T). I got in on the ground floor on this one and have been on a beautiful emotional journey with it ever since. It's the drag queen AU that just won't quit. Running the gamut from screamingly funny to heartbreakingly poignant to quietly cathartic, there are even AUs within the AU sure to scratch as many itches as you care to manifest, all while maintaining a solid sense of character and voice throughout. Truly worth investing time and attention to, A+++++.

Second: adrift between the dreaming seas by teaDragon (M). Do you want a funky fairy tale vibe with talking animals, surprising curses, a Kraken with big doe eyes, and a deeply emotional journey to self-acceptance? Of COURSE you do. And you want some lighthouse imagery with that? YES. Put this in your eyeballs immediately, because trust me, TRUST ME, it's a keeper.

Third: The Nettles in the Garden Don't Go Away by JRaylin441 (M). Are you tired of the same old same old soulmate AUs? Just want something with a fresh twist? How about a side of the slowest burn imaginable, heaped with excruciating emotional growth and breathtaking poetic imagery? Don't skip out on this one, then, because if your goal in life is to Feel Things about your blorbos, it doesn't get more feelingsy than this bad boy right here. Drowning in the feelings, you might say. Still updating, just as a warning, but well worth the wait, in my opinion. You feel every second of these boys' growth arcs, and it does absolutely start at childhood and is taking us through canon--and hopefully beyond, but who's to say? A true gem.

Fourth: Catch Fish by Cesare (T). Let's get a little lighter with a series about catfishing and unraveling the plots thereof. Yes, this is less heavy than it seems, so far consisting of two fics covering the two sides of the story: first, Stede and Ed working through how Stede was tricked by someone using Ed's pics and catching some real feelings along the way, and then a prequel, showing Stede's emotional journey through his time being catfished. Funny and sincere and emotional, still updating both fics but a fantastic ride so far.

Fifth: A Minivan Called the Revenge by @duskoscrawl and @doctors-star (T). I am a sucker for kid AUs, and this one is the cream of the crop as far as "crew of Revenge is kids, Stede and Ed are their dads" flavors of kid fic goes. My only complaint is that I want more of it. Even without being super duper long, the emotional bonds between not just the dads themselves but the dads and their kids are really well-established and feel organic, and they don't pull any emotional punches either. Little bitty Buttons with his plush seagulls lives rent-free in my head forever.

(And a most honorable mention to saturday night lights by sometimeseffable (T), the American college football and color guard AU that tingles my brain in ways that just don't make sense for how much I don't care for real-life American football, but probably have to do with being friends with band kids for my entire adolescence and growing up in a football culture. Sweet and funny and going hard on the pining, which is what we're all here for! Still updating, but worth the read!)

There are so many more that are worth mentioning but I've already cheated with six recs so gonna stop while I'm ahead. Thank you!

HI. I READ ALL OF TOGETHER WE STAND FROM START TO FINISH WITHIN THE SPAN OF A NIGHT AND I JUST– HOLY FUCK.

I love love loooveee slow and steady character development and the way you've shown these two characters from childhood to messy teens to painful adulthood is so well done, I'm in awe. It's very reminiscent of Normal People (show and book both of which punched a hole in my chest)

They're so messy, and toxic, and they both hurt each other and make bad choices ALL the time, and yet there's something about them that makes you root for their happiness. And I'm a sucker for rooting for questionable characters.

THE ANGST IS TOP TIER. THE SCENES WHEN BILLY LETS HIMSELF GET HURT AFTER GETTING HER LETTER. WOW. OUCH. LOVELY LOVELY LOVELY.

And his personal growth...his patience in waiting for her, for her to be ready for him, for her to CHOOSE him. That was really a testament to how far he's come since his hot-headed teenage tantrum days. It just makes you love him more in spite of his shady extracurriculars. His inner monologue in the last chapter though, some things never change and I'll always love an unhinged, sociopath Billy.

Rawlins....boy do I hate that motherfucker. I don't know what's to come but I'm so scared and giddy and anticipating your next move and I just love this story you're telling so fucking much.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY NEEDED A GOOD STORY TO DISAPPEAR INTO AND TWS GAVE ME THAT LITTLE SPACE. THANK YOU FOR SHARING ❤️❤️❤️❤️

HI ! so my heart legit BURST IN MY CHEST when I saw this ask and while reading it I had the STUPIDEST grin on my face 😃 (also I kinda fangirl on you ngl)

Normal People was a HUGE inspiration for TWS. I read it last summer and it changed something in me. I love the trope of two characters losing and finding each other overtime with an unbreakable bond. It's kind of a twisted soul mate mixed with a friends to lovers trope.

Thank you for saying that ! I know the characters are hard to love, they're messy and dysfunctional, they take the wrong decisions and consistently hurt each other. But reader thrives for change and maturity, she wants a healthier relationship with Billy and pushes him to become better. I guess the premise of the fic was to ask myself, "what if Billy had had someone who loved him unconditionally?" And TWS was born.

I LOVE Billy's psychology. I love to put myself in his head and imagine what it's like to be a sociopath. I love to explore his feelings, his thoughts, his manipulative and fucked up tendencies. It is so interesting to explore a character psychology who's considered "evil" : cruel, sadistic, selfish, and to give him humanity and soft spots. Reader represents Billy's "sane" parts, she's his empathy, kindness, patience, and love. And because of her, this Billy is different than the one we meet in The Punisher.

I hate Rawlins with a burning passion, and the whole Rawlins storyline in the show. I'm going to use it as the final test for their relationship and to show how this version of Billy is truly different than the one in The Punisher.

Although, this Billy is not perfect. He's still flawed, manipulative, psychopathic and messed up. I've set up the situation for things to escalate between him and reader, because he still lies to her and hides things from her, and hasn't come clean about many things.

I've struggled with the next parts of the story because the angst coming is too much for me and I need to be better mentally, because when I write I put myself in the same state as the characters (the scene where Billy hurts himself after reader's letter... or when they part at the airport, I was a MESS) but it's all worth it if my story makes you FEEL this way !!! The fact that TWS touches someone else on this level ??? Brings all the joy in the world I need. Clears my skin and cures my depression (if only 😂)

Well, first, I absoloutely love your writing, it's wonderful. Technicolor especially, it's a comfort fic of mine and I always come back to it (I'm a sucker for Three and Rose!!).

This is the Prologue Chapter of an unpublished WIP fic, where Eight is a reincarnation of the Other, and Rose is the Eternal of Time. It is set in an alternate timeline where Time Lords never got the power of regeneration, so every incarnation of the Doctor 1-8 is in fact more like a proper Reincarnation. And, because it’s Eight, I have to throw in some Amnesia 😂

The fic is called Patience, Darling… and I hope to publish it entirely on Ao3 when it eventually gets completed. Everything was burning.

The sky, the scarlet grass. The ships, their solar sails exploding with golden fire and losing their energy as the crafts plummeted to the planet below. The Edges of the Eye of Harmony, now a supernova poised to turn into a black hole. The Empire that had defeated the Racnoss, the Yssgaroth, beat back the primordial chaos entities to the Howling Halls, who relegated the Eternals to the pocket dimensions, who watched the Old Ones burn away, who banished the Carrionites to Hell, who upended the Pythia and their reign of blood, was tearing itself apart from the inside out.

Rassilon, first Lord President of Gallifrey, he who led his people in countless crusades, first of the Time Lords, had sought to remove the last of the Eternals from Gallifrey to make it a pure society. The Pythia’s Curse had been rectified by the creation of the Looms, and genetic superiority was a possibility. Rassilon sought to create the perfect People, the Time Lords.

What he didn’t know was that his colleague, his trusted friend, known only now in the stricken record as The Other, had fallen for one such Eternal, and she for him. The Eternal of Time, whose name is lost to us in all but a given moniker, Patience. They had married in secret-

“Oh, is this a love story?”

“Hush, Theta,” the elder of the two boys chided as his little brother whined. He smiled prettily at the exasperated but amused woman whom Theta had so rudely interrupted. “Please, continue, Aunt Flavia.” Flavia raised an eyebrow and then nodded.

-They had married in secret, and she was with child. An impossible child, with Pythia’s Curse, made possible only by the powers of an Eternal willing their offspring into conception. Now, Rassilon assumed that The Other would comply with his decision to deport the Eternals from Gallifrey, and when he found out about the forbidden tryst he ordered that The Other sign the paperwork himself. They fought, from the Office of the President to the scaffolding above the new Looms, Staff against sword, Gauntlet against bloodied fist. They fought, and fought, the respective factions following them painting the streets crimson, and both fell into the Looms.

Rassilon’s Gauntlet, keyed as it was into time, caused an explosion that threw him from the equipment and left him permanently in a half state between life and death. The Other was luckier. Or less so, depending on your perspective. He died, the last breath on his lips, so the legend goes, his mate’s name, and a cry for the child he would never meet.

Some say, that Patience heard him. That she answered his prayer, giving him the power of eternal renewal, of Spirit escaping from one body at death to be born into the next. Reincarnation, if you will.

Some say, that because Patience and The Other were bonded when he died, that their souls are forever linked, and that they will always find one another. Some say, that she is called Patience because she will forever wait to be reunited with him in each of his lives. Some say-

“Some say that it’s just an old Shobogan tale, and should not be taken at all seriously,” a male voice interrupted sternly. The two boys swung their heads around and then bowed them in deference as Flavia stood with a sigh from her seat and nodded to the intruder. The other children in the room, all cousins of House Lungbarrow, watched the exchange with rapt attention.

“It’s just a bit of fancy, Quences,” Flavia said tiredly. “If you cannot trust these children not to see the difference between myth and reality, then the future of this House is doomed.”

“I have great faith in the youth of Lungbarrow,” Quences retorted with a scowl, gaze landing on Theta and his elder brother Braxiatel, and narrowed. “Most of them, that is… tell me Flavia, do you think it wise to fill a boy that has his head in the clouds further with fluff and lunacy?”

“I don’t like romance anyway, Lord Quences,” Theta murmured softly, flinching when Brax lightly smacked the back of his head.

“Romance and the notions of Love certainly have no place in Time Lord society,” Quences scoffed. Flavia glared at him and he shrank under her gaze. “Well, they don’t!”

“Ignore this man,” Flavia said to the room at large, the gaze of ten or so children fixated on her as she all but glided with angelic grace and poise over the floor. “He’s just sore that he never got kissed at the Academy and will die alone.” Quences was left to storm from the room with a thunderous expression upon his face red as the grass of the fields of their House Estates as the children tried in vain to suppress their snickers. Finally she smiled and sat back down on her chair, leaning forward slightly. “I will leave you with this: Some say that The Other can be anyone, anywhere, any time.” She made a shooing motion with her hands. “Now, attend to your studies. I’ve kept you from your tutors for long enough.”

“Thanks for the story, Aunt Flavia!” Several children said in various ways as they left the room. Theta lingered at the back.

“Aunt Flavia?” He asked, head tilted slightly to the side in question.

“Yes, Theta?”

“Is any of that true? I just- you said it was a myth, a legend. And that’s different from a story because somewhere somehow it’s got a grain of truth in it.” Flavia smiled, an odd glint in her eyes as she looked at him and seemed to decide something.

“Well, that’s for history to know and for the present to guess at,” she said with a wink. Theta frowned at that before shrugging and walking from the room.
