Midnight In Sheffield (VII)

Pairing: Alex Turner/Reader

Summary: When a soon-to-be-wedded insomniac author heads back home to visit her parents, she comes across the likes of a mysterious musician whilst on her sleepless escapade in the AM.

Notes: I took a bit longer to write this chapter, and thank you all so much for the patience. If you didn’t know yet; I got accepted into a writing school! I can’t express the gratitude I feel right now, I owe it all to you. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy.

Chapter VII - I Wanna Be Yours

Her feet dragged across the pavement, and this time they showed no hesitance because they knew exactly where they were going.

She didn’t find the building she was looking for the first corner she rounded, so she took a detour, until the lights seemed to change and the asphalt disappeared and she nearly tripped over the uneven brick road. A group of men turned their heads when they’d heard her swear loud enough she was sure she’d woken up the deaf grandma that lived in the attic at the end of the street.

As soon as she met his eyes in the pub, she wasted no time do drag him away from a very confused Matt, out to the hallway where the bathrooms were. They were occupied by couples doing, well, what you can imagine they were doing, as well as ladies trying to not-so-subtly sniff a questionable substance from its counters, but she couldn’t be bothered right now. Alex didn’t seem surprised to see her, and it irritated her how calm he was while she was practically having a mental breakdown.

“Guess who I met this morning,” she said, crossing her arms over her chest.

He raised a brow disdainfully, almost offended by the way she was manhandling him and throwing vague questions at him. But she didn’t waver, so he thought he’d humour her anyway. “The wedding planner? I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to be a bit more specific,” he replied.

“Oh, I’ll be a bit more specific,” she ground out, “I was just about to head down for breakfast, when I found that my mum had guests over. A couple, about her age, people I’d never even met before. But somehow, they seemed familiar to me.”

Alex hesitated. He had a feeling where this was going, yet remained silent.

“That’s when I learned their last names. Turner. And they told me all about their missing son, and how he hadn’t even left a note saying he was leaving, and how worried they were. That the only reason they hadn’t called the police yet was because you’d pulled off stunts like this before. But that now, you’ve been gone for years. Without a word.”

“I don’t think it’s any of your business, really-“

“Oh, don’t you fucking start with me, Turner. You made it my business when you started interfering with mine.”

It took her a moment to realize why her mouth was tingling. He had his lips pressed against hers, and they were warm and inviting. He tasted like what she’d expected him to this time around; expensive whiskey with a hint of smoke. His eyes were closed, and without those piercing brown orbs staring back up at her, she almost thought she was kissing someone else.

Hang on a minute.

She shoved him back, “You can’t just do that!”

He raises his eyebrows innocently. “Why not?”

“You’re trying to distract me!”

“Whether or not you get distracted by me is irrelevant, love. I was just hoping we could have a good time, and I was, until you nearly knocked me off my feet and dragged me out into some dirty hallway.”

She glared at him, “You deserved that. I’m engaged.”

Looking across the hall and around the bar, he casually shrugged. “I don’t see him anywhere. And I certainly didn’t hear you complaining last night.”

She felt it at the pit of her stomach when faced with reality; a deep, underlying sense of guilt. What had happened between her and Alex, was something she hadn’t ever felt before. And that scared her senseless. It shouldn’t happen. It couldn’t happen. And she had to make it very evident to him, that this could not go on this way. She had Mark, ad he was all she needed. He didn’t deserve this. Neither of them did.

“Alex, what happened yesterday, it was a mistake. I shouldn’t have let it get to that point, and I’m sorry I led you to believe that I felt that same interest in you that you have for me. It can’t happen again, and I hope you understand.”

He seemed indifferent, but his words were harsh as he took a step closer to her, up until the point where she could feel his hot breath fanning across her already burning cheeks. “You can blame it on wedding nerves, or insomnia, or insecurities all you want, love. But I think you and I both know that last night really meant something. I can’t blame you for lying to me, I really don’t mind. I’ve had enough lies thrown at me before. The thing is, though, I won’t let you lie to yourself. You’re better than that, smarter than that. And most importantly, you deserve better than to be in a situation where you have to lie to yourself to not give into those feelings.”

“Alex-“

“I’ll tell you all about my parents. About what’s going on. About why everything seems to be stuck in time when the moon finally hits the sky. I’ll tell you, but only if you’ll tell me how you really feel.”

“I…” She hesitated.

All she could think about was that night Mark walked away from her. She thought of how sad her mother would be to hear she wouldn’t get married after all. She thought of Rachel and James, who would be telling her they told her so, and then laugh about it all behind their back.

She thought of what might happen to her if Mark wasn’t there. How was she going to get around?

She thought of all that time wasted, trying to make something work that might not have ever been intended to work at all.

“…I don’t know what to feel right now.”

She looked up at him in search for answers, but he wasn’t willing to give her any.

“I feel… scared, confused… and most of all, fucking tired.”

She was glad to see the corner of his mouth quirk up at that at the very least, and comforted when he slung his arm around her shoulders, and said, “Let’s go get you a coffee, then.”

Alphonse was a trained chef from years of hard work at the cook’s school in Paris. He knew how to make any dish, in any way, shape or form, and most importantly; how to make one with love. It might sound cheesy, but everyone knows that’s the key ingredient to a successful meal.

Alphonse was very good at cooking and working with love. He was also very good with the ladies, if he was allowed to say so himself. But he had to admit, his temperament was short, and he was awfully bad at being patient with people who were subconsciously withholding affection from one another.

So, when Mr. Turner had stepped back into the restaurant with his Cherie asking for a cup of coffee and looking mighty burdened with heavy topic, he scraped back his chair, and stormed off into the kitchen to angrily grind some coffee beans.

“Is he all right?” she wondered, as she hung her coat over her chair.

Alex shrugged it off.

Furthermore, even though their cups nearly cracked from the force Alphonse smacked them onto their table with, the restaurant was as quiet as ever at this hour.

“I suppose I’ll leave you to it, then,” the chef grumbled, and strutted back into his kitchen.

She turned back to the steaming dark liquid, trying to focus her attention on the swirls her spoon were creating instead of the tense feelings she got from being alone with Alex once more.

“It’s a long story,” he finally spoke up, “But I need you to look at me while I tell it.”

She did as asked.

“When we were still in school, we’d already started the band. Played a few gigs here and there. Managed to catch the eye of a record company once someone had put some of our demos online. We got lucky, and managed to release a few albums with them. But fame isn’t all that fun anymore when your last record flopped and your manager is trying to sell you out.

I’d gone home for a few weeks to think things through; what I wanted to do with what was left of my career. So I went for a walk, late at night.”

She gave him a knowing look, and he nodded conformingly.

“I met Miles at Mardy’s. A pub I’d never seen before, in a street I’d never walked through. I thought I’d seen all of Sheffield when I was younger, but it turns out I was wrong. For when the clock strikes an uncertain hour, and you watch the ground shift beneath your feet when you’re not paying attention, you walk right into what appears to be a glorified version of the twenties.”

She recalled their gig on that night she’d also met Miles. “So your guitars…”

“I’d just taken them from home,” he confirmed, “No electric guitars invented yet at that time, so I had to bring them myself. Strangest thing is, the people don’t question it at all. They just think it’s another fancy new instrument that hasn’t officially hit the market yet.”

“So, what? You just decided to continue your life at night here?” she asked.

“It was simpler. I don’t have to run from the paparazzi, or do interviews where people question my sanity all the time, or get dragged for who I date or knock about with. We released an album with instruments and music that’s way ahead of its time here, and we’re seen as legends. It’s as simple as that.”

“But, Alex… I think this album could easily hit the top charts in the regular world.”

He scoffed, “They said that about our last album. And the one before that. And when they don’t do as well as you’d expect them to, people will say it’s ‘underrated’, but you know deep inside you could’ve done better.”

“Music is about more than just hitting the top charts,” she reminded him.

“I know. Yet it appears that the feeling of validation through it has left a bigger mark on me than I had expected. I expected more from my own music, and was disappointed when I couldn’t deliver. I’ve finally found a place where everyone enjoys my music again.”

“So, what? You just decide to spend the rest of your life here, a fantasy world in an attempt to hide from reality? From your family, all the people who care about you?”

“It’s not as simple as that.”

“It’s not as simple? I think you just made it very clear how simple this all really is,” she said.

“Matt thought the same thing. Until he started playing with us for the first few nights, and even he was convinced. It’s hard to explain. It’s why he didn’t want you to stay around for too long when we hung out in the pub. This place gets to you.”

“He was just convinced after a few good shows?”

“I don’t think you understand,” he said, “If you stay here too long, if you spend too many nights in this version of Sheffield, you won’t be as willing to leave. It’s like an addiction; a place where all your dreams come true, if only for a little while, a few hours maybe. But you just can’t stay away from it. Once it takes hold of you, you can’t escape.”

Her brows furrowed. “What are you trying to say? You’re stuck here like this forever?”

His eyes cast downwards. “I couldn’t say. But I’ve never had good reason to leave.”

Her heart was swelling in her chest. “And what if you did have a reason?”

“What?”

“What… What if I wanted you to leave… with me?”

It was as if a spark flashed in his eyes, but then quickly snuffed out. “Don’t do that,” he huffed, “Don’t give me hope. You should be out there, living your life without chasing after the ghost of a man and blaming it on your insomnia.”

She took hold of his hand across the table, and squeezed it tightly, too afraid he’d take off if she didn’t. “I should be out there, living my life. But so should you. You’ve made me feel things I thought I was unable to feel, and I wouldn’t have experienced any of this if it wasn’t for you. You can still escape from this, Alex. I know you can. I can’t do this without you.”

“It’s not that simple, love.”

“Why not?”

“You shouldn’t want me.”

“Don’t you want me, then?”

His brown orbs lit up passionately, as he leaned forwards and captured her lips in a kiss. “Of course. I want to be yours,” he muttered.

He deepened the kiss, gliding his tongue against her bottom lip suggestively. She opened her mouth and her tongue met his, sliding against it and drawing a quiet moan from her throat. He held her cheek in his hand and slid his thumb over her soft skin gently.

When she pulled back, she had finally made up her mind. “I need to speak with Mark.”

Saying goodbye to the village, again.

I’m only moving down the road, which almost makes it feel more permanent. This is the first time I’ll have a place of my own; no roommates or family members. I’ve got many mixed emotions.

First of all, I’m moving in there without a permanent source of income that will cover my realistic living expenses. Yes, I’m currently contracted to 19.45 hours with Asda, paying £9.15 per hour, and I actually just landed a freelance gig at £12 an hour for a CBD brand, which could be another days worth of hours, but it’s not the kind of sweet spot between security and flexibility that I need. Delivering on behalf of a supermarket is actually quite physically demanding, AND it’s so emotionally tiring, from my perspective, with the unfortunate oxymoronic relationship between my intellectual and professional capabilities and my socio-economic positioning. Plus, it would be really difficult to travel to from my new place without a vehicle of my own, and the entire point of getting this place immediately for me was so that I could have a fresh new space to be the person I am when I’m alone. She’s the only one who can get this project done; done on time, and done well.

I tried to quit my job with Asda already, but then the letting agents needed a reference from a current employer in order to accept me as a tenant, for obvious reasons, so I rang my supervisor and told them I’d changed my mind. I had actually asked them for some time off to work on my degree and explained how I’d been crying at the driver’s seat because of the stress, but company policy states that these kind of benefits are only extended after the three month probationary period. (Edit August 18th: The irony that after only three weeks with my new employer, a small media production company, I have been given several weeks to work on this, while still getting paid, yet a huge corporation like Asda did not care at all). They text back within the hour asking me to do a shift that evening. So I went back for a few shifts - some okay, some awful - but today I decided I wanted some time to pack and appreciate my childhood home for one more night before I move all my stuff across tomorrow, so I called in sick, like the creative Zennial anti-capitalist I really am.

My grandma wanted to go to Asda so we had to go to the Pudsey one, which is the furthest place she will drive. We got lunch at my auntie’s restaurant in Morley beforehand and made a day of it. It reminded me of this one morning that my roommate in New York took a mental health day and told me she was going to see A Star Is Born. I was like “that sounds like fun” and called in homesick at my creative agency. We got bagels at Tompkins Square and ate them in the park, then cried our eyes out to the movie; it really was a self care day. New York City is the best city in the world and it wasn’t often that I got homesick, but being the token Brit had its benefits. Plus, my company were so progressive and saw something in me that I’d barely begun to see myself. Right from the start, when they sponsored me — a 21 year old working class student from Yorkshire — for a summer internship and flew me out first class from Manchester, covered Uber to my apartment, visa, everything.

My life in New York always makes it into the conversation; I became conscious of this because of the way it made people at home perceive me. Yet that’s precisely why I hold the city to closely to my personality, because that’s where I began to find one for myself, without fear of what others would think. I liked being so far away, and having those hours to myself where nobody back home was even awake. I don’t have that here in my new flat in Bradford but what I do have is a place of my own, with beautiful windows that open all the way, and face into the courtyard of the Mills. I’m reminded of those days I spent cramming for the Cinematic Themes exam in second year; it’s like I’m in that Hitchcock movie, Rear Window. I slept here for the first time last night. The mattress is still on the floor but I’ll have a bed and a sofa by Wednesday. Tomorrow, dad’s picking me up to do an Aldi shop then I’m going to do my evening shift at Asda, and tell them that it will be my last one.

I’ve got a couple of freelance invoices coming in soon, and I start the work with Real Cannabis Club right away. They’ve set me up with an email and are willing for me to kinda do my thing with it, plus they will pay weekly invoices. (Edit 18th August: they began ignoring my messages, immediately after this). That leaves me with about two weeks to sit here and complete this. Right now, I want to share this edit that I made back in September 2020. It was in the weeks after I saw MH in Shoreditch, when I first started thinking about the narrative. Watching it back now, it feels so beyond off. It reassures me that I can tell a story but that this shouldn’t be a sob story. For so long, it has been my early childhood that has defined me but this story should be far more about what I’ve done since. It’s also important to look at how this project has evolved, over the year. The California trip was the story originally, and then it was about why Dirty Hit should hire me. Now, it’s going to be about why Dirty Hit should use everything in their power, and pockets, to help me win an election. It’s like I’m a character in The Bold Type, except it’s set in Yorkshire.

This edit was very rough and looks pretty clumsy, but gives an idea as to a desired style. At the time, I remember this being so difficult to work on. I was still very much in a bad place. I’m waiting for the new script to just come to me, and sporadically finding more Dirty Hit content and 1975 lyrics to incorporate. In terms of this project fitting in with the Motion Graphics requirements, this shot was taken with the intentions of adding a 2D animation cartoon of myself, sitting on the chair. This is where I’m going to start.

Vent session 4/26/20

A couple things. First, the not so serious. 

I’ve been living with my parents for a little over a year now since the second year of my boyfriend’s ST program basically makes it impossible to work while doing the program. We decided to move our in with our parents to save money (especially since there’s no way I could support us and our two dogs on my own.) My parents are fine. They’re not perfect but they’re fine. I’ve realized as I’ve gotten older though just how different I am from a lot of my family. My parents are definitely products of their time. They dont believe in therapy. I go to therapy. I’ve gone to therapy since I was a freshman in college (When I could go without them paying for it/knowing about it) I’ve recently started Trauma counseling, trying EMDR to process past traumas and maybe stop some of my more toxic/ bad habits and the cycle of abuse. (my current relationship isn’t abusive but I’m scared that I may make it toxic because thats really all i’ve known or if it fails I’ll go back to the cycle)  

I myself have had quite a few traumatic events happen in my life. In the last few years I’ve become pretty open about my mental health, hoping that it might help others (so no one will feel the way I felt, like I was alone etc) I think a lot of my family would benefit from therapy, as now that I am so open, sometimes my family will share their stories. My parents, like I said don’t believe in therapy, and now they also believe they are too old to be fixed. Especially my mom. Which, for me, is really saddening. My mom, when overwhelmed, will hit herself in the head. Which can make it hard to talk to her about anything serious because she also takes a lot of things super personally (and I cant blame her for that. I’m sensitive AF) and it sucks that she feels she, or her inner peace, is worth it at this point. I’ve found a lot of my family just doesn’t really seem to want to better themselves and would rather just say “This is how I am, take it or leave it” 

It’s exhausting to be around people who are in that sort of mindset when you’re working very hard to be better. Trying to be happy, get my anxiety/depression/PTSD under control, process traumas....

Also. some of my traumas happened in the house, or when I was teen living here. SO, sometimes just being in this house is a struggle. Being back in this room where my ex-wife tried to kick me out and pushed me to a breaking point. Being in this room where I found out my ex-wife kissed someone else while they were deployed and decided they didnt want to be with me anymore. Being in this house where I broke down shattered, screaming and crying for the world to stop spinning, and my ex-wife yelled at me, belittled me, harassed me so much over the phone I had to get my parents involved so she wouldnt speak to me again. In this house where I had to hide so much of myself, had to pretend so many things didnt happen....Its really hard being here. especially in this time of super stress, being in Quarantine and a Pandemic due to COVID-19. 

and to add on top of that, my mother has started trying to inch me out. My grandma is supposed to move in when I move out. I guess my grandma is hounding her, so in turn, she’s hounding me. Even after I have explained that COVID has messed with my boyfriends program, and my planned summer vacation. Originally he was supposed to be done in June, and we had a FL trip planned in Sept, so we’d move out after our FL trip, to save money, and hopefully not stress the dogs out. (moving to a new place and then all of a sudden your parents are gone for 8 days might be a little much for our pups). Depending on when he started, and how much money I saved, and if my coworker would be moving in with us we could possibly move in August, gives the dogs a month to adjust to their new surroundings before we would move. BUT, now....he may have to do a summer term, to make up for the lack of ST time in ORs at different hospitals, which means he wouldn’t start working in June, he may, depending on how they do their summer term, not be done with his program till July or August...and obviously he needs to work, for at least a month or two before we could move. also, we don’t know if we’ll be able to travel to FL in September, THere isnt really a point in going if Disneyworld and Universal aren’t open/fully functioning. soooo....a lot is up in the air. The added stress of my mom constantly asking when I’ll be moving out is not helping my stress level at all. It’s irking me more than I thought. I didn’t want to admit quite how much it bothers me. oi. 

Secondly, 

probably a month ago now...or a couple weeks I’m not sure (time is hard right now ya’ll) our dogs started fighting. Very suddenly. We’ve had Carbon since September 2018. Frank (Jake’s dog) and Carbon have never fought till this point. I’m not sure what changed because they both have lived with me (Frank and one of Jake’s parents’ dog dont get along, so he had to live with me) the entire time I’ve lived at my parents house...It seemed like we were making progress, we were able to have them out in the same room without any trouble for a few days recently. (previously we had been crating one, and switching them out about every 4 hours if we were both home) They do fine on walks together. they seemed to be doing okay, but then another fight happened a day or two ago...Jake’s suggestion is to remain living separate. I’ll move in with my co-worker, he’ll either move out on his own or with a roommate with Frank. 

to backtrack, Carbon is a almost 2 year old pit/lab mix. He was a rescue, I got him when he was 5 months old. He’s fairly mellow for his age, but he is 2, he’s young and playful. Frank is a 6/7 year old potato dog (he’s short, a little long and has a round/barrelesque body, supposedly a chihuahua, pug, staffy mix. He isn’t fat either, its solid mass. He’s older and grumpy. so maybe he just snapped at Carbon’s youthful shenanigans.  They both are very much daddy’s boys. they may have fought over his attention (now that they see him more, he has been basically quarantining at my house ) it’s kind of impossible to know. 

I don’t like the idea of living apart. I’m needy. Plus, for a majority of our relationship we have lived together already. Jake is not only my boyfriend but also my bestfriend. I’m very physically affectionate, and Jake kind of sucks at texting...Also, I’m worried that our schedules wont line up. I work M-Thurs 6:30 am to 5pm. his ST schedule could have him working 12 hour days, he could have to work on my days off. having him spend the night once a week is not enough for me, if I can help it, most of this year that’s all I’ve been getting and its been awful (Quarantine has changed that but, thats special circumstances) We already were only supposed to live apart while he was finishing his program, and now we may need to live apart another year...or more...for the rest of Frank’s life, unless Carbon passes suddenly I guess...thats a long time. I get that he doesnt want to crate them “forever” if we lived together. and if we wanted to go on a trip, we’d need specific people to help us, to be sure no fights ensued or whatever, if someone gets bit...it’s over. I understand that...it might not be fair to “crate and rotate” them for however long we need to and neither of us is giving up their dog....I thought maybe if we could get a big enough space maybe it wouldnt be so bad. we could kind of section them off away from each other...(this past year its been me and the 2 dogs in like maaaaaybe 500sq ft) but finding that might be difficult in our price range...especially since we’ll be renting and probably moving to Portland (which is expensive) it’s causing a lot of stress for me...my anxiety is causing me to overthink. Like. is this somehow a sign that we shouldnt be together? He and I got together before i was even officially divorced (granted he was supposed to just be a confidence boost, not actually a legit relationship..but we fucked up and fell in love) and he has broken up with twice over our three years...the second time really wasnt necessary because he was trying to take care of me, to not cause me to be miserable during his second year of school when he knew I wouldnt be able to see him much and that I am needy, but we ended up doing what I had suggested...which is what we are doing now..being together but living apart. sigh. I don’t know. It’s a lot going on right now. I’m not a fan....everything is super stressful as is...and now all this too...oi oi oi. sigh. it’ll work out somehow...right?

Racist mom tries to bribe son to dump me, I gain power over everything she cares about.

This is gonna be a LONG post lol, may have gotten exact timing sequences out of order.

Met a guy that we had mutual friends with and invited him to hang out with my friends and do fun stuff. Later learned he was not even allowed to hang out with my crowd cuz his mother was the very strict and hypocritical sort who thought everyone else was inferior to her precious kids. Guy was telling them he was doing work or something. Eventually he told them he wanted to date me and they flipped. The dad doesn’t have much say in the house and the mom (EM) was livid.

You know how Amish people don’t like rock and “sinful” music? Or females that wear shorts and tanks? Yuuup basically her. She went through my social medias and literally compiled and printed out giant lists of every country song I’d ever posted or concert I’d been to or clothing she thought was too provocative along and gave it to the pastors at both of our churches. EP called MY mom at 2am a couple times to rant and rave about “how could she let her daughter do such sinful things and flirt with boys yada yada yada”. She made racist remarks to Guy (I’m a super cute half Asian half messican, and all of his family is pale white golden haired angels) and even asked him if I’d molested him (I’m 5’ 2” and he’s literally a foot taller than me) and if that’s why he wanted to date and marry me. He was still at home and they went on a family trip to Colorado. Or as it turned out to be an exorcism style prayer meeting over Guy because EM just knows there must be a demon or something wrong with him. Oh and this was only within a span of a few months while he saved up to move the hell out.

Nope not over yet. EM then was harassing his work, his new church pastors (mine), his friends, got one of his business partners to leave him with lies that Guy is “bipolar” and “Schizophrenic”, thankfully most of the people had our back and we had some good laughs over what outrageous things they told us. Even driving an hour and a half to his apartment (I know dumb move to let them know where he moved to), in the middle of the night a couple times to harass and berate him and blubber about how everyone would judge her and how her reputation was going to suffer and church standing, she even dragged his two younger siblings into it all and told him they were heartbroken that he moved out and all the reasons he needed to move back home. Cue even more fun, one night he was just done so when they showed up to again try and bully him into moving back home or at least dumping me, he just up and left. Got in his mini and drove away. AND THEY FOLLOWED HIM. Unbelievable right? He used to race his mini so he lost them pretty quickly and booked it over to where I lived and spent the night there. I know, why not call the cops right? Well there was no physical damage or threats thereof. Yes she’s been verbally and borderline physically abusive to him growing up, think patriarchy super conservatives but it’s a matriarchy. At one point EM asked Guy what it would take for him to dump me, what amount of money could she pay him (Guys dad makes buttloads of moola, yeah those kind of people) to get me out of his life and for him to move back home. SHE TRIED TO BRIBE HIM TO LEAVE ME. She’d threatened to disown him and all the typical rich EP stuff before and knew he didn’t care. EM even called all his guy friends and asked if Guy has ever had any “homosexual” tendencies etc. Next month Guy proposed, and EM was SO MAD that she heard about it for the first time from a mutual friend congratulating her on the upcoming wedding! So of course she calls all the pastors and REEEEs about how we’ve been living in sin (kicker, we hadn’t even done the dirty dance but she didn’t bother asking) and telling everyone that they shouldn’t attend the wedding etc. Yea call us prudes :p EM also printed out all the reasons why I wasn’t good enough for her son and handed those out like candy to church leaders. Then when that had no effect she switched tactics and did the same thing with all her reasons why he was immature and shouldn’t get married and should move back home and be parented. Still no effect, except my dad at a huge meeting where she tried to distribute those, gathered them all back up and handed them to her and told her to stop slandering us and said how ungodly that was. And she stood there baffled and all the other people present agreed with my dad and told her to put those papers away. EMs exact words “but but I thought the very reason everyone is here is to show Guy why he needs to leave that girl and move back home!” I couldn’t help a giggle and a few other people couldn’t either. That meeting is a whole nother story, it was hilarious.

Where is the revenge you ask? Well all that was just the tip of the iceberg of course, but the revenge has been pretty simple. Spend a few obvious nights (SLEEPING ONLY) at his place, just to trigger her, but ofc our pastors and friends knew we’d committed to abstinence our entire lives up to the wedding (hella yea wedding night was killer) and other things like that to get under her skin but nothing that anyone else thought was bad. Very publicly plan and execute a HUGE wedding (over 500 people) and tell everyone about how our relationship is so beautiful and holy and how Gods destiny brought us together yada yada. She made a couple extra hoops for our pastors but we jumped through them with flying colors and everyone except her thought we were the cutest most Christian kosher thing. So basically to save face she had to fake smile and accept all the congratulations and be secretly embarrassed that we didn’t invite her to the wedding showers (she said she never wanted to see me and wouldn’t go to the wedding) and made excuses as to why she hadn’t gone, EM couldn’t tell her friends that we hadn’t invited her now could she? She went after the best man too and he almost decided against being the best man she was such a hassle and he was a pushover, but I told him the best passive way to deal with her is tell her that he wants to be there for his friend and how could she argue with that? She didn’t. But of course, what’s better than forcing her to attend the wedding but not allowing her to ruin it? Extremely petty I know, but I’m a drama llama and have enjoyed 98% of all this. I of course get ahold of EMs own mom and get to know her and she’s very sweet and loves me to death, along with Guys siblings and his dad, as many of EMs own friends and their families etc. So everyone loves me and when we invite them all to the wedding, they strong arm her into coming. I have my cop friends who have been having a heyday hearing about all this drama coming in for the wedding, one of them I make my MC so if she tried anything, not only would they take care of her swiftly, but she would also deeply embarrass herself because there was no denying that there were 500+ people there who loved Guy and I, including a lot of her friends. The ceremony was great, went off without a hitch, oh wait... I am not a bridezilla so if anything went wrong it was fine and the drama was cracking me up, I was a little disappointed she didn’t try anything drastic, but I could see on her face the entire time that EMs smile was sooo fake, and I got reports that she was seen crying outside later. Watching people congratulate her was priceless. When my own friends congratulated her a few of them later told me that she seemed surprised that I had any “respectable” friends (her literal words) who thought well of me. And no I’d arranged her to be only in one photo so she couldn’t ruin any others.

Oh and our wedding day was only the 3rd time she’d ever set eyes on me. She was against me from the start for almost a year without ever having spoken a word or ever seen me in person. Take that EM. To this day I have no idea what was her real beef with me. Happy ending: now that I provided the first grandkids, to my chagrin they’re like baby Targaryens they’re so white, and of course she’s too “young” to be a grandma so she’s called “nana”, but we laid down ground rules and she knows we will ostracize her at the drop of a hat, and she has kissed butt so hard and to her credit done her best to mend everything without ever really actually mentioning any of it. It’s great. We have holidays and fun visits in between and she showers us with super expensive gifts and will drop everything possible to help if we need anything. I think we’re friends now. One day I think she might bring it all up and try and play the victim, idk, but she’ll be hit with a carefully detailed account of everything that went down, in case her memory “fails” her. I can forgive but I’ll never forget, after all, I got my delicious revenge. Power over everything she holds dear and the evidence to expose whatever she hasn’t already done by her own dumb self and absolutely ruin her reputation and community and church standing. I feel really good right now

TLDR entitles mom wants to be petty about me dating her son so I take petty to another universe levels and crush her with epicc facts and logic and hold all the cards to ruin her life now

Why I “snatch” things.

!! This post isn’t to make anyone feel bad for me, the last thing i want is a pitty party !!

A common message i received along with “Youre a pos for shoplifting” and “I hope you get arrested” is 

“why do you shoplift”

Well, here’s the rundown. I dont know where to nearly begin. Like most, my father left my family when i was maybe one year old, possibly before that. My father figure entered my life around age 3. My mom suffers from severe depression and anxiety and refuses to take medication most of the time. As a family we had money, but none to splurge on nice things like the other kids. While their parents bought them justice and nike things, i had my grandma get me a couple outfits from walmart every year or so. That was my sweet splurge. My dad convinced my mom that he made enough money working for construction for her to quit her job as manager of hardees. her new job was to make sure dinner was ready for him when he got home, clean the house, do the laundry, and take care of the kids. 

At age 8 my step dad, my father figure, and the one who made the money in the house, got arrested from robbing his grandparents. He was sentenced to 6 years in jail. My grandmother moved into the house to pay for the bills while my mom became a bad alcoholic. every dollar my little sister and i got she would snatch eventually and buy bottles of vodka and drink that straight. slowly after two years our little splurges of walmart trips twice a year disappeared because all of my grandmothers money went towards bills, food, and for me to go to the local skating rink every two weeks to escape the house. i could have not gone to the skating rink but i spent everyday after school at home watching my mom. making her food, when she passed out to roll her on her side to make sure when she puked from too much alcohol that she wasnt on her back so she didnt down in her on upspit, and when she would frustratingly leave the house to go walk after her and keep her from spending the night in jail after going to mcdonalds drunk and throwing a fit. 

i wanted all the nice things life had to offer. i would occasionally snatch a chapstick and use it down to the core before i got another. or a nailpolish bottle once a year. at age 14 my dad came home from prison. he started working again and got us on our feet. i thought things were looking up. jokes on me. he grew to be abusive, only towards my mom and i. but my mom slowed down her drinking to only once every blue moon. he wouldnt touch my little sister because that was his blood, and im not. i would get daily chores that took most of my time while my 9 year old sister got nothing. She played softball while i ran track. I would wear shoes ive had for years from walmart while my dad took my sister to get expensive helmets, under armor softball shoes, and other very expensive things. I was left out of the fun. my shoplifting grew to shirts, face masks, and other small things they wouldnt notice, and i would go get them once or twice a week. my dad went to every practice and watched her play toss the ball. and would take off work to play outfield of every game. if you have ever watched little girls play ball, nothing hardly goes in the outfield. My parents didnt go to a single meet of mine, or my ffa banquet which i was elected vice president in my first year and got two different awards. While everyone sat and ate with their parents, i sat with my friends’ family while mine sat at home. 

In september of ‘17 my family kicked me out. I was 16 years old. I had no job, i just quit my job at mcdonalds due to bad managers. And i stayed with one friend for around a month, then another for 3 months. i had no money and thats when shoplifting grew a lot for me. it was very common. now im in my third home and i have things i never imagined me having. when i say “i told my mom im going shopping today” means my roomate (a good friend a grade under me) and i planned on going to our mall and such an hour away and shoplift our hearts out. 

I shoplift to have a chance to own nice things. Just because i was born in a bad home doesnt mean i dont deserve the things everyone else has. I dont lift to resell for money, just to make myself happier and to gift some nice things to my friends to see them smile.

This is no excuse for any judges, just myself. Anyone else in the community can comment on this their stories, considering how accepting everyone is. Any outsiders will be blocked.

First Date (AustonxAshley)

Author’s note: Is this realistic? Nope. Do I care? Another nope. Enjoy.

I was sitting on my bed stressing about what I was going to wear on this date with Auston. The last time he saw me I was in a ginormous Bluejays shirt that was not very flattering so I wanted to look at least a little bit more presentable this time. However I didn’t want to be dressed up either as this wasn’t a fancy date by any means. I had argued with him for almost half an hour to get it to not be in a fancy restaurant. Instead we were going to go to the aquarium which was one of my favourite places in the world. I was worried about going to fancy restaurants since my eating habits were very strict and I was fussy.

“Leaaaah help meeeee.” I said in a snapchat video showing her the two different options. One being black ripped jeans, gray croptop, blue flannel with skull sneakers. The other one was light-wash shorts, my pizza sweater, with my blue skateboard shoes and knee socks. I kept waiting for her response but was greeted with a phone call instead.

“Hello?”

“Where are you going on this date?” she asked not bothering with small talk.

“The aquarium.”

“Seriously? Out of all the things you could do you chose something you’ve done a million times?”

“Yes. I love it there. Now which oooone?!”

“I don’t know because the pizza shirt outfit looks cute as hell on you but the flannel will be easier to not get your sleeves wet when you pet the stingrays.”

“Oh shit true! I looove the stingrays. The first time I went I wore a long sleeved shirt and then my arm froze so bad on the way home.”

“What did you shove your entire fucking arm in without rolling up your sleeve first?”

“No! I just reached too far trying to give the ray a boop.”

“You’re ridiculous.”

“I know.” I put her on speakerphone and started getting changed.

“Are you gonna do makeup and stuff?”

“Pfft no.”

“Why not? I thought your whole thing right now was that you wanted to look more presentable.”

“Yeah I want to be wearing clothes that fit and aren’t ripped by accident, not be in full glam makeup. I don’t have the patience or the talent to do that. I don’t even have foundation that matches my face right now.”

“God you’re crazy. It’s not that hard, Ash.”

“That’s easy for you to say, you’re good at makeup.”

“You should’ve just called me earlier, I would’ve come over to help you.”

“Nah I can’t be bothered. I don’t want him to expect me to look like that always. Makeup is a special occasion thing for me, not an everyday thing.”

“What and going on a date with Auston Matthews isn’t a special occasion?”

“It is but if I’m gonna date him long term I don’t want to do this shit all the time.”

“Are you at least gonna do your hair?”

“No.” Leah groaned loudly. “Oh my god what now?”

“You’re not even going to do your hair?!”

“No. It’s washed and brushed though if that makes you feel better?”

“Well it does a little bit, but come on. A date Ashley.”

“Well to be fair I’ve never been on a good date. All my dates have been like, mcdonald’s.”

“That is so sad? Why does no one want to treat you good?”

“Wish I knew dude.” I finished getting dressed and checked the time. “Okay Leah I gotta go Auston is going to be here soon.”

“Alright call me when you go back home, I want to hear all about this.”

“Okay bye.”

“Byyyye.” I hung up on her and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and make sure my hair was okay. My face was breaking out but there was not a whole lot I could do about it. I hoped he wouldn’t be too judgemental about it. I didn’t think he would but you never know. I went out into the livingroom putting my camera into my backpack along with some snacks incase I got hungry on the way or in there. Are you supposed to bring in snacks? No. Does that stop me from sneaking them in? Nope. I was tying up my shoes when there was a knock on my door. My heart jumped into my throat as I got up, walked up the stairs and unlocked my door. With a deep breath I open the door to find Auston smiling.

“Um hi.”

“Hey, how’s it going?”

“Gooood. Would you like to come in? I’m just getting a couple things gathered up still.”

“Yeah sure.” I moved out of the way and locked the door behind us. “What’s that for? Kidnapping me there Ash? Jokes on you Mitch knows I’m here.”

“No, I have to lock it or else it will open if it’s windy at all.” I said laughing at him. “Besides I don’t think I’d have a chance in hell of kidnapping you. Too small and wimpy.”

“I donno, my face doesn’t agree with wimpy.”

“Oooh my god shut up I didn’t mean to!” I said pouting grabbing my backpack and standing in front of him.

“I’m just kidding.” he said smiling bigger. “Are you ready to go?”

“Yes! Always!” I say smiling and going up the stairs dragging him behind me while he laughed at me. We got out of the house and into his car which was too nice for me to snack in that’s for sure.

“What’s wrong?” Auston asked worry on his face.

“Am I allowed to eat snacks in here?” he just laughed at me again.

“Seriously? That’s what’s got you all frown-y right now? You just want to eat some fucking snacks in my car?”

“Dude stop laughing.” I smiled and shoved his shoulder. “This car in more expensive than anything I’ve ever owned in my life I just want to make sure it’s okay..”

“You little cutie, go ahead.” he started driving right after that and I pretended I didn’t see the blush on his face. I pulled out some candy from my backpack. “Why does it say your name on that backpack?”

“Cuz it’s mine.”

“But you’re like almost 20 why do you label your bags?”

“Um well it’s kind of from the 8th grade.” this made him laugh again.

“Why do you still have it?”

“It’s adventure backpack. It’s the one I had with me at the ballgame too. I keep it for going out on tripes like this because it holds just enough and I don’t care if it gets wrecked. It’s got my name on it because it was from the grade 8 trip and like 60 of us had the same backpack.”

“Was yours full of snacks then too?”

“Yeah it sure was. Especially day two after the farmers market. I had so many fruits in there. I got so sick.”

“What did you get?”

“Strawberries mostly. My friend was supposed to split paying with me for two things of them because it was cheaper but she then didn’t want to pay me back after so I fucking ate hers too. Take that Rhiana.” I mumbled the last part and he just laughed at me again.

“That is a lot of strawberries.”

“Too many. I threw up when we got back to the dorm we were staying at. But then I was fine and ate some candy with other friends.”

“Wow. You’re crazy.”

“Those were my wild days.”

“No wild days anymore?”

“Not really. Me and my friend go to this one dance club sometimes and I go to ballgames but other than that I just sit at home on the phone with grandma watching hockey or baseball.”

“How long have you been into baseball?” he asked while looking down to his phone.

“Excuse me sir. Stop with the phone, I’m not trying to die tonight.”

“I’m just trying to put music on, I’m sorry.” he mumbled.

“Here I’ll do it, what’s the passcode?”

“Um..it’s the same as my twitter name.”

“Wow not very creative Matthews.” I go into the phone and look up a song to play.

“You never answered my question. How long have you been into baseball?”

“Since the womb. Grandma literally started on me the first season I was alive for. I went to my first game just before I turned 2.”

“Wow that’s really young.”

“Yeah I sat through the whole game though. Didn’t leave my seat once after the game started. Apparently I was really into it. We’ve been to games every year since, it’s our tradition.”

“That’s such a cool tradition to have!”

“Yeah and now we’ve started another one where we go to Sting games every year. That’s what started to get me into hockey. Then I was there for the playoffs last year so I watched it everyday. Now I sit in my house and talk to her every night while we watch hockey together but not together.”

“Was she talking to you the other night?”

“You mean when you exposed me?! Yes. Yes we were talking and let me tell you I will never hear the end of this for the rest of my life.”

“Well you should’ve been easier to find.”

“Hmmph.” I pouted getting more candy from my bag. “Would you like some chocolate almonds?”

“No that’s alright. Save me some to sneak later.” he gave me a wink and I blushed hard and looked out the window, which confused him. “What?”

“Don’t wink at me, jesus.”

“And why not?”

“Too hot. Can’t handle it.” I said looking at him and now it was his turn to blush.

“Oh. Sorry..” it was awkwardly quiet for a while until Auston broke the silence again. “Okay so you know how you said no fancy?”

“Yes. I remember arguing a lot insisting on no fancy.”

“Yeah I remember that too. You’re literally the only girl I’ve tried to date in years who turned down a fancy expensive date to go to see some fish.”

“Well I’m special what can I say? I love the fish.”

“Well I didn’t do anything fancy but I did do something.”

“Oh my god Auston what did you do?”

“I might have paid to have the aquarium to ourselves.” he said as we pulled into a parking garage close to the aquarium.

“WHAT?!”

“Maybe. Might’ve.” he quickly found a parking spot and unbuckled turning to look at me.

“Auston that’s so much! Why? I would’ve been fine with others there too..”

“I didn’t want our first date to be you fighting for my attention all night while fans talk to me and stuff..”

“Cocky. But aww I appreciate that.” I say smiling looking down. “I definitely wouldn’t be very good at fighting for attention. I’m not that interesting.”

“What? No that’s not what I meant at all!”

“Oh no, I know Auston. I didn’t mean to make it seem like that’s what I was saying.”

“I think you’re very interesting.” he said getting out of the car. I blushed but followed him out of the car. We went up some stairs and got outside, only walking a little bit until we got to the aquarium. “Here we need to go this way.”

“Austooon.”

“I’m sorry okay I just want this to be great. Now let’s gooo.” he walked over behind me and pushed my back to make me move making me giggle.

“Okay okay I’m going jeez!”

“Good. This is going to be fun I promise.”

“I know it will. I love the fish.” he laughed and rolled his eyes as we went in the back of the Aquarium.

“Welcome Mr. Matthews. Everything is in order and you guys can take your time looking through the aquarium. We hope you have a good time.”

“Um thank you.” Auston said with an awkward smile before walking into the beginning of the aquarium.

“This really wasn’t necessary you know that right?” I asked walking beside him.

“I wanted to spend time with just you. Get to know you better ya know?” he said rubbing the back of his neck.

“That’s very sweet Auston.” I said smiling at him before running off. “Look at the flat nose fish!!”

“He’s funny looking.”

“I think he looks like perry the platypus.” Auston laughed beside me.

“Yeah he kinda does.” we started walking around and seeing all of the animals. We were joking around and having a great time getting to know each other and talking about the fish. We kept sneaking snacks also which kept making Auston laugh telling me that sneaking was not needed since we were alone and making me shush him. I took a lot of pictures of the fish and I started sneaking some of Auston but of course he caught me when we were petting the little crabs.

“Are you taking pictures of me?”

“Maaaaybe?” I said shyly.

“Whyyy?”

“Because you look cute.”

“Stop no I don’t.”

“Yes you do.” I said simply as he started walking again. I put my camera away and ran a little to catch up to him but of course being as clumsy I am I ran into him and almost fell over. He caught me though thank goodness but it didn’t stop me from blushing.

“Stop trying to take me out Ashley.” he said laughing.

“I’m sooorry.”

“You’re so damn clumsy.” he complained while he was still smiling.

“Boy you don’t even know the half of it. I’m so clumsy.” we walked into shark tube and I kept looking at Auston. I was scared of sharks and while it was common knowledge to my friends and family that I panicked or needed someone to hold my hand, it was not knowledge Auston had. He had his hands in his pockets as we  stood on the conveyor belt going further into the shark tube. I thought I would be okay and I was. Until I saw a shark’s teeth. Then I freaked. I looked at Auston again who was looking around at all the animals with a smile on his face. I looked down to see his hands still in his pockets. While looking around at the animal I took his hand out of his pocket and held it.

“Um whatcha doin?”

“Sharks scare me.”

“Why did you want to come here then?” he asked laughing but holding my hand properly.

“I love the fish. I love everything except the shark teeth. The shark teeth scare me.”

“Oh no can’t have that.” he said letting go of my hand and wrapping his arm around my shoulder holding my other hand. “Is that better? Still scared?”

“Nope this is much better.” I said blushing leaning into him while we went slowly through the tube. Once we got out he moved his arm and I pouted making him laugh.

“If you wanted to hold my hand you could’ve this entire time cutie.” he grabbed my hand again and pulled me along happily through the jellyfish part of the aquarium. He loved the jellyfish and everytime he got that excited look on his face my heart beat fast. Him holding my hand still was not helping with the heart thing. We walked back up to the top level where the stingray petting was.

“Waaaait! We need to pet these little sharks first!”

“You literally just help my hand because you were scared of sharks.”

“These are tiny and I can’t see their teeth so it’s okay. Aus, look at them!!”

“Two fingers right down their backs, they love that. Don’t touch their fins though.” the worker instructed us. We nodded and went and pet them.

“They’re so cuute.”

“They aren’t the only ones.” Auston said looking at me.

“Oh my god shut up.” I said blushing hard.

“Can we go to the stingrays now please?” he asked tugging on my free hand.

“Yes! I love them! Are you ready to see me cry? Cuz I’m gonna.” I said giving him finger guns which made him scoff and roll his eyes at me with a smile. We walked up to the sandy part and I put my backpack down. I took off my flannel and shoved it into my bag before turning back to Auston who was staring at me. And I gotta say that did absolutely nothing to help my self image problems. “Why are you staring at me?”

“Why did you take your shirt off?”

“I want to pet the rays. I don’t want to get my sleeves wet and freeze on the subway.”

“If you think I’m letting you go home late at night on the subway you’re wrong.” he said rolling his eyes and his sleeves up.

“It’s not that late? It’s only like 8. I’ve been on the subway latter than this before.”

“I don’t care, I insist.”

“But it’s so far out of your way..”

“Maybe I want to spend more time with you.”

“Do you?”

“Maybe.” he said smirking at me.

“If you want to spend more time with me you just have to ask Aus.”

“Fine I want to spend more time with you so can I please bring you back home?”

“Why of course.”

We spent a lot of time with the rays before we decided to leave. Auston thanked the people at the desk and we left to go back to his car. The ride was filled with joking around and talking about all the fish and stuff we had just seen. It was really fun and we got to my house a little bit too fast for either of our liking. He walked me to my door and we stood outside for a while.

“I had a really good time with you tonight Auston..” I said shyly looking at the ground.

“I had a good time too. You’re a lot of fun.”

“Pfft yeah I know.” I said laughing. “Seriously though thank you for doing all this for me. It was really sweet of you. And thank you for holding my hand in shark tube.”

“You don’t have to thank me for holding your hand you freak.” he said smiling at me grabbing my hand. “Look I’ll do it again. Because it’s fun and I like to.”

“You’re a dork.” I said leaning in faceplanting into his chest.

“You’re cute.” he said putting his arms around me in a tight hug. “You’re different and special I can tell. I really hope you let me see you again.”

“Um yeah? If you want to deal with my clumsy ass again then definitely.” I said looking up into his eyes and smiling.

“You’ve got really pretty eyes..” he said quietly.

“Thank you Auston..You do too ya know.” I replied quietly. We were silent for a minute until Auston spoke up again.

“Can I be honest?”

“Yeah dude always.”

“I want to kiss you so bad right now but you’re so damn short.” he said making us both laugh.

“Hang on a second.” I said getting out of his hug and going up the stairs to stand on the ledge of them. “There. Now I’m tall.”

“I’m still taller, but this will work much better I think.” he said pulling me close to him. I wrapped my arms around his neck as he brought his soft lips to mine in a sweet simple kiss. He pulled away smiling and I was a blushing smiling mess. “Definitely worked better.”

“Shut up.” I said giving him another kiss. “Okay you should probably go.”

“Aw how come?”

“Because if you come in we’re gonna kiss more and that’s gonna lead to things and I am no hoe Auston Matthews. I will not be banging on the first date. Wait until at least the second.” I said making him go from serious to snorting in a millisecond.

“You’re hilarious. Fine I’ll go.”

“Message me when you’re home so I know you’re safe please?”

“Yeah of course I will, don’t want you worried.” he gave me another lingering kiss before leaving. “Bye Ashley.”

“Bye Auston.” I went inside my house and almost cried of happiness. This night had been absolutely perfect and he had wanted to see me again. Something no other person I’ve dated had wanted. I got into pajamas and into my bed and waited for Auston to let me know he was home. He did and he told me again that he had fun with me. I told him I had fun with him too and then went to bed with the biggest, dopiest, smile on my face.

This is great news for a lot of people but still not a perfect solution. With that being said, let’s talk about Vietnam Visa. who needs it? who doesn’t? how to get one?.

Requirements for everyone even if you don’t need a Vietnam Visa!?

A passport! This might seem crazy to some people to even mention this but some might not be used to traveling. So lets cover it, you MUST HAVE a passport if you are visiting Vietnam from another country.

This next point is very important and I have actually seen many people get caught up on this and not even realize it until they get here.

**important** Your passport must have 6 month of validity from the date of Travel. **important**

Our company Back of the Bike Tours have actually seen this issue a few times where one person in a group gets stopped from traveling because of this issue.

Don’t let it happen to you! Check cousin Jimmy and Grandma’s passport to make sure they aren’t expiring 6 months from the date you land in Vietnam.

This isn’t something you can get around as well, If you land in Vietnam with a passport that is expiring, they will not let you in. Your best and most unlikely scenario would be that your embassy would issue you an emergency passport to travel. There are three ways to get your Visa:

Mail your Passport to the Vietnam Embassy inside your country. They stamp a Vietnam Visa into your passport and send your passport back to you.

or

Obtain an Approval Letter so that you can obtain your Visa on Arrival

or

E-Visa that allows you to enter Vietnam through 28 different points of Entrance. This would be the best option for those coming into Vietnam through Land or Sea.

Let’s jump into each way to get your Vietnam Visa, the specifics on how to get it. The advantages and disadvantages of each one.

Obtaining a Vietnam Visa from your Local Embassy in your country

This is old reliable.

Before the days of the internet and expecting everything within just a few minutes of our current culture, we all had to send our Passport to the embassy before taking off to Visit Vietnam.

What do we need for a Visa from the Embassy or consulate?

Each country has its own price and time frame to complete the Visa Process. Since there are so many different countries world wide we believe you should use the following link to track down the embassy in your country and follow their Visa Process which should be rather easy and simple to follow.

Here is an example of the Visa Process from The Vietnamese Embassy in the United States,

APPLY FOR VISA IN PERSON OR BY MAIL

To apply in person or by mail, the applicant is required to submit the following documents:

01 application form to be completed online at http://visa.mofa.gov.vn ; please select VIETNAM EMBASSY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA as Place of visa submission and collection. After completing the online application form, please PRINT OUT and sign your application. In case you are unable to fill out the online application form, you can download the form (click here) and fill it out by hand or use paper application forms available at the Embassy upon your submission.

Passport (the original for a sticker-visa application OR a copy of the ID page for a loose-leaf visa application) with at least 06 months of validity prior to the proposed date of entry into Viet Nam to meet airlines’ and immigration requirements). For Vietnamese holding a US Permanent Resident Card (also referred to as “Green Card”), you can apply for a Visa Exemption Certificate (click here), also known as “Viet Nam 5-year visa”.

Photo: one (1) 2×2 inch identical photo if the original passport is submitted for a sticker visa OR two (2) 2×2 inch identical photos if a copy of the passport is submitted for a loose-leaf visa.

Visa fees: paid in cash or Visa Card/Master Card for in-person application at the Embassy, or in the form of money order/ cashier’s check/company check payable to “EMBASSY OF VIET NAM”.

Other supporting documents (if any): copy of visa approval document or provision of visa approval reference number issued by the relevant authority of Viet Nam; invitation letter from sponsor/host etc.

If you wish to receive your passport and/or visa sent back to your mailing address by mail: 01 prepaid self-addressed return envelope. To ensure safe delivery of your application package and visa, it is recommended that you use certified mail service offered by USPS, UPS and FedEx with tracking number to check on delivery status. The Embassy shall not be responsible for any loss of documents due to insecure and uncertified mailing service. In case you do not bring along a prepaid return envelope upon submission of visa application at the Embassy, you may use FedEx envelopes available at the Embassy and are required to pay for the additional mailing service.

The process above seems rather straightforward.

I have personally always gotten my Visa on Arrival, but I can see how getting your visa before leaving would be easy just to have it completed and done before leaving. One less thing to worry about when traveling with a large group or small children

What is the Pro’s and Con’s of getting your Visa from the Consulate/Embassy?

  Pro’s:

  Scam Free

If you are worried about submitting for your Vietnam Visa on arrival through a scam site, then bypass those worries and just apply directly with the embassy.

Worry Free

When planning travel and on the actual date of flying, sometimes thinks can feel rushed and overwhelmed. If you get your visa through the consulate/embassy its done and there will be no surprises when you land in Vietnam. This peace of mind is comforting and a huge reason to get your visa through the consulate.

Debit/Credit Card Payment

Many of the consulates/embassies provide an online payment source for you to pay for your Visa before sending your Passport to them for the Visa. Some people enjoy this rather then having to worry about cash payments on arrival in Vietnam.

No Waiting

If you have your Visa already, you will queue up in the immigration line and not have to wait for the “Visa on Arrival” line that can sometimes add over an hour to the immigration process depending on how long the wait is when you arrive. After a long flight, I do find this additional line irritating.

Length of Time

Getting a Visa from your embassy/consulate provides the option for you to apply for single or multiple entry Vietnam Visa and 1 month or 3 months Vietnam Visa.

  Con’s:

  Time

If you don’t have the luck of living right next to an embassy or consulate, you will have to send your Passport in via the post. This might take up to 6 weeks to get your passport back. If you are great at planning and do this part early, then time may not be a factor that you’ll need to worry about.

Price

Depending on your individual consulate, this might turn out being the most expensive way to get your visa. But the peace of mind might be worth it.

Paying in Check or Money Order

This feels like a bit of a con because I don’t write many checks or get money orders in the days of debit/credit cards. This may not be a big deal for those who often deal with these forms of payments.

Verdict: If I was traveling with just myself or as a couple. I might go for the option of getting my visa on arrival or Evisa listed below. If I was traveling with children or any sort of large group whether its all friends or family, I would prefer to gather all the passports and send them in for a Visa before the trip just for the knowledge that I won’t have any surprises when I land. This is my personal opinion though, and please use all the information provided to find out what works best for you.

What is Visa On Arrival and a Approval Letter?

Okay, here is the deal with the Visa on Arrival.

Step 1: You Fill out some information online and make a payment to receive a Approval Letter. This letter allows you to get a Visa when you land before you go through immigration.

Step 2: You land in Vietnam, before you can go through immigration, you have to wait in line to get your Visa. This is where you will give them your approval letter, a form, and the additional photos you brought along. You will have to also pay a Stamping Fee here, which they would like for you to pay in cash. If you don’t have cash they will have someone escort you to an ATM inside the airport( I have had this happen before)

Step 3: Once your passport is stamped, you get your passport back with your visa inside and now you can go through immigration. Enjoy your time in Vietnam ?

What are the Pro’s and Con’s for the Visa On Arrival?

  Vietnam Visa on Arrival Pro’s:

  Time

You can sign up for your approval letter rather quickly, and in just a few days receive the letter allowing you to travel to Vietnam and get your Visa.

Price

The Visa on Arrival might be a little bit cheaper than sending your Passports to the embassy or consulate in your home country. This does depend on each country individually as the price for the visa differs country to country.

Emergency Travel

In Emergency cases you can get your Approval letter in just 4 hours. This does depend on the time and availability of the immigration office and the agency you are using for you letter.

Location

The Visa on Arrival does not require you to go out of your way when preparing for a trip to Vietnam. After receiving your Approval Letter via email, the only thing you need to do is fly to Vientam where you will get your visa right when you get off the plane.

Length of Time

The Vietnam on Arrival provides the option for you to apply for single or multiple entry and 1 or 3 months.

I have used the Visa on Arrival process every time I have needed to travel when I first came to Vietnam before receiving my Residency card. There was never an issue i had with scams but apparently it does happen, so often that you can find warnings issued on Vietnam Embassy websites as you can see here:

Personally, I have had no issue using an online service, but it is important to be made aware that these services are not the Vietnamese Government so they do hold some risk when relying on them for your visa.

Time

I have marked time as a pro when it comes to getting the approval letter, but the time spent waiting for your stamp after a long flight can be excruciating. I have also waited for hours at the airport when friends and family were waiting to receive their Visa stamp before going into already long immigration lines.

Miscommunication/Errors

I believe the biggest con here is that if there were any issues in your Approval letter process, then you might have a difficult time on arrival that will not be a great way to start your vacation. The other issue here is that sometimes people forget, I have been caught at the Visa on Arrival window myself with no cash for the stamping fee. That was painful after a long flight. A different example, my friend forgot her photos to give to the VOA when she arrived so she had to take time to get new photos and pay for that. While not expensive, its just painful after a long flight and doesn’t provide a “I’m ready for vacation” mood.

Not applicable for Land or Sea Arrival

The Vietnam on Arrival ONLY applies to travelers coming into Vietnam through an International Airport in Vietnam. This leaves Land or Sea Arrivals needing a different way to get a visa like the Vietnam E-Visa.

Verdict: Visa on Arrival is really useful if you are in a pinch and need a visa quickly. If that is the case, then that one pro outweighs all of the cons of the Vietnam Visa on Arrival. If you are planning your vacation in advance, then getting your visa before you arrive might be a better option.

What is the Vietnam E-Visa?

I am glad you asked! The Vietnam E-visa is an excellent step forward for Vietnam. Adapting their tourism policies and infrastructure to their customers needs is very important and we are so excited to see that happening last year with the introduction of Vietnam E-Visa.

Any other site is not an E-Visa and is either a scam or just signing you up for the Visa on Arrival.

Alright, Now that we have that cleared up let's get into understanding what you’ll need for the E-Visa.

You will need a photo of yourself that looks like this. Your face will need to be clear with a white or light colored background.

The next thing you will need is a clear photo of your passport details that looks like this.

Here are a few tips from struggles we have read about online.

Be sure that your photos are Jpeg images

You might need to resize the photo so that it is smaller for upload if you are using a photo from your phone rather than scanning your passport and photo. This can easily done by opening Paint program and resizing the photo to a smaller size.

To resize the image copy:

Right click on the image file in the File Explorer, select Open With, Paint.

Select main menu item Image, Stretch/Skew … Change the Horizontal and Vertical percentages to a percentage less than 100. Keep the percentages equal to preserve the aspect ratio.

Select the main menu item File >> Save As to save the resized image.

After you have all that, its a simple process of filling in and submitting the form.

You will need to pay $25 for your Vietnam E-Visa which is Single Entry for 30 days which should cover most travelers coming to Vietnam.

The Pro’s and Con’s of the Vietnam E-Visa

  Vietnam E-Visa Pro’s:

  Cheap

The E-Visa is the cheapest option out of all three. At $25 for a 30 day single entry this is a nice price compared to the charge by embassies and consulates. Its not such a far departure from the price for Vietnams Visa on Arrival but still cheaper.

Credit/Debit Payment

This is the only option for paying your full Visa fee with a credit or debit card.

3-5 Day Approval

Receiving your Visa back in 3-5 days is great turn around for the complete Visa.

All Ports

You can use your E-Visa at every port of entry into Vietnam.

Simple Process

After viewing the website and entry form, this is a simple process to get your visa.

Peace of Mind

Once you have received your Visa with No Errors on it, you are 100% done, just go right through immigration when you get to Vietnam with no worries. Personally, this is my favorite part, I like knowing that things are complete and done with no hang ups.

  Vietnam E-Visa Con’s:

  No Option For Multi Entry or Longer Stay

The current process doesn’t allow for travelers to select anything other than the 30 day single entry Vietnam Visa. If you need to leave and come back, you will need to have another Visa.

Filling out Forms

Currently, you can only apply for 1 visa at a time on the website. This means a family of 4 will have to enter in 4 different forms and make 4 different payments on the government website for the Vietnam E-Visa. This is a bit painful for most of us, but might be worth it when considering the price.

Website Issues

It seems that the website has some issues every now and again not letting people submit photos. These seems to be debugged rather quickly and sometimes are user errors but it travelers should still be aware.

Typos

Some name Typos may occur on your visa, these issues can from from the user or the immigration office. Either one still causes an issue going through immigration if the name on your Visa doesn’t match your passport. Please check each name carefully.

MW : OK, let’s tune to 210...

SC : In the early days of 210, there was a huge shift in music tastes. Disco was giving way to mega rock bands (Eagles, Fleetwood Mac) and soul, R&B and funk were massive too. Soon, in the late 70’s Punk was to explode... actually, programmers and top-level DJ/ presenters (Bob Harris) hadn’t a good grasp of what was actually happening! Bob actually got into a fight with Sid Vicious at a club in London, and  “called it a day” with Whistle Test. 

Tastes and audiences were changing.

At 210, there was a calm sea of music policy, enforced by Neil. The 210 Top 40 was a slow moving list, not sales based, but tailored to fit a certain pre-determined ‘sound’ like many of the programmers in the States.

DJ tastes were being eroded.

During my time at 210, us youngsters were always on the lookout to expand. Mike Read, Steve Wright, myself and others picked up a lot of outside gigs, mostly local disco work. 

Thanks to my documentary and talk experience I got more varied offers such as British Forces Broadcasting which paid very well (I subbed for Tommy Vance) and then BOOM!

I successfully applied to audition for Esther Rantzens’  ‘That’s Life’. What a step up that would be...

MW : ...‘That’s Life’ ?

SC :  ...every couple of years or so, Esther’s reporter sidekicks would cycle-out, and replacements had to be found. To start the audition process, I spent a few weeks at BBC West London, picking out useable stories and building them into TV-worthy items. (The actual show was on summer break.) This culminated in a full TV studio recording WITH audience. Just like the real thing. There were about eight finalists (four pairs), and it was quite nerve wracking. 

Sadly, I didn’t get the part; as seemed usual at the time, existing BBC reporters got the jobs... us outsiders were window dressing for this process, but it was super fun, a great experience. As a result, I became friends with the team, and often went up to TV centre to sit in on the tapings.

MW :  Capital Radio 194 went to air the same year as LBC in 1973, but it was Capital Radio 604 in South Africa that you later joined. How did you get involved, and how did the two “ Capitals” compare? 

SC : In late 1978, a revolutionary radio station was being formed in London and Cape Town called Capital Radio. It had nothing to do whatsoever with either the South African government, or 194. Rather, it was to be based in an ‘Independent’ African State, called the Transkei. The aim was to broadcast uncensored news and music from the ‘Homeland’ of Transkei, south, and into South Africa, which was ruled by apartheid, and white supremacy. 

604′s mission was to broadcast actual, real news, and play rock and pop which hadn’t been rejected by the SA government censors. Its transmitter was the “‘loudest” in the Southern Hemisphere, but the antenna system was misaligned, resulting in a poor AM signal to the intended audience. Short-wave and FM functioned to a point in Cape Town and to and extent, Johannesburg. 

I was chosen to ship out to Port St. Johns, Transkei, and helped set up the broadcasting side. The main studio and staff base was located in a sleepy former fishing town called Port St. Johns, on the Indian Ocean. It was Paradise! It was also the first time I’d earned a five figure, untaxed salary! No outgoing except for high quality wine and spirits!

MW : LBC celebrates its 45th anniversary this year - let’s look back at your time there...

SC : LBC is a book in itself! Suffice it to say that I joined as a jobbing freelance, doing late -night shifts and news, and then rapidly to traffic analyst (reporter) at Scotland Yard. This taught me London geography, almost like a black-cab driver. We then brought traffic in-house, when we added a small ‘plane sponsored by the Evening Standard, to view traffic congestion. As far as weekday presentation was concerned, I was usually co-anchoring with Philip Hodson, David Loyn etc.

My primary arc at LBC was news reading for Independent Radio News (IRN) and, for eight of my eleven years, I ran the syndicated travel programme ‘Time Off’. This was a way for us to showcase the many, varied press trip offers the station received. We were blessed with a huge audience, plus the central ability to satellite-out the components of the show, and also the entire one hour reel. 

In the late eighties, when a lot of people went freelance (off staff) we worked through our own companies/ entities and I turned ‘Time Off’ into a cash machine, selling the sponsorships myself.

MW : Melody Radio launched with the slogan 'At last - radio without the speakers' - as a launch presenter, what was it like?

SC : In 1990, Peter Black invited me to join Lord Hanson’s Melody Radio, which I did for four years. (A TV comedian at the time called it “Quiet FM”, orr was that Radio Two?!)

Nothing much happened here...apart from having the luxury of an actual producer for each show, including Roskos’ old producer Aidan Day, who was now scheduling easy listening!!

In 2005 off I went again... another adventure; this time to Nairobi and back to my TV roots to help redesign the Kenya Television Network (KTN) I was MD and CEO, and the re-shaping was drastic. In my early days there I bought first series of ‘ER’, ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’, ‘Days Of Our Lives’ etc... paying the super cheap “Third World” rate card price. And boy did we milk it until the reels had to be returned!

PC’s and WIndows ‘95 had just come out, so we were all good! Such systems, good sales and top TV presenters, staff, and shows took us rapidly to the most watched in the land. We also had exclusive use of CNN International for news inserts and over-night programming. I was also tasked with designing two FM stations for Nairobi (population 6.5 million) which were up and running after I left.

MW : What constitutes your life now?

SC : I met my Colorado born wife-to-be in Nairobi - who was on a sabbatical from Southern California, and a career in law.

In May 1996 we were married in Manhattan Beach, a suburb of Los Angeles, and soon moved to Santa Barbara where she continued a successful career in Law, and is now the Assistant City Attorney. 

We have a daughter, now at Berkeley, and I continue with my own media and web projects and a movie and TV project in development.

The Visa process has been adjusted last year in order to encourage more travelers and tourists to come to Vietnam.

This is great news for a lot of people but still not a perfect solution. With that being said, let’s talk about Vietnam Visa. who needs it? who doesn’t? how to get one?.

Requirements for everyone even if you don’t need a Vietnam Visa!?

A passport! This might seem crazy to some people to even mention this but some might not be used to traveling. So lets cover it, you MUST HAVE a passport if you are visiting Vietnam from another country.

This next point is very important and I have actually seen many people get caught up on this and not even realize it until they get here.

**important** Your passport must have 6 month of validity from the date of Travel. **important**

Our company Back of the Bike Tours have actually seen this issue a few times where one person in a group gets stopped from traveling because of this issue.

Don’t let it happen to you! Check cousin Jimmy and Grandma’s passport to make sure they aren’t expiring 6 months from the date you land in Vietnam.

This isn’t something you can get around as well, If you land in Vietnam with a passport that is expiring, they will not let you in. Your best and most unlikely scenario would be that your embassy would issue you an emergency passport to travel. The most likely thing to happen is that you will be on the next flight home after sitting in the airport for a number of hours.

Will I need a Vietnam Visa?

There are only 24 countries at the moment who are allowed to enter Vietnam without needing a Visa for a certain amount of time.

Let’s get you a Visa so that you can have fun traveling around this beautiful country.

There are three ways to get your Visa:

Mail your Passport to the Vietnam Embassy inside your country. They stamp a Vietnam Visa into your passport and send your passport back to you.

or

Obtain an Approval Letter so that you can obtain your Visa on Arrival

or

E-Visa that allows you to enter Vietnam through 28 different points of Entrance. This would be the best option for those coming into Vietnam through Land or Sea.

Let’s jump into each way to get your Vietnam Visa, the specifics on how to get it. The advantages and disadvantages of each one.

Obtaining a Vietnam Visa from your Local Embassy in your country

This is old reliable.

Before the days of the internet and expecting everything within just a few minutes of our current culture, we all had to send our Passport to the embassy before taking off to Visit Vietnam.

What do we need for a Visa from the Embassy or consulate?

Each country has its own price and time frame to complete the Visa Process. Since there are so many different countries world wide we believe you should use the following link to track down the embassy in your country and follow their Visa Process which should be rather easy and simple to follow.

Here is an example of the Visa Process from The Vietnamese Embassy in the United States,

APPLY FOR VISA IN PERSON OR BY MAIL

To apply in person or by mail, the applicant is required to submit the following documents:

01 application form to be completed online at http://visa.mofa.gov.vn ; please select VIETNAM EMBASSY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA as Place of visa submission and collection. After completing the online application form, please PRINT OUT and sign your application. In case you are unable to fill out the online application form, you can download the form (click here) and fill it out by hand or use paper application forms available at the Embassy upon your submission.

Passport (the original for a sticker-visa application OR a copy of the ID page for a loose-leaf visa application) with at least 06 months of validity prior to the proposed date of entry into Viet Nam to meet airlines’ and immigration requirements). For Vietnamese holding a US Permanent Resident Card (also referred to as “Green Card”), you can apply for a Visa Exemption Certificate (click here), also known as “Viet Nam 5-year visa”.

Photo: one (1) 2×2 inch identical photo if the original passport is submitted for a sticker visa OR two (2) 2×2 inch identical photos if a copy of the passport is submitted for a loose-leaf visa.

Visa fees: paid in cash or Visa Card/Master Card for in-person application at the Embassy, or in the form of money order/ cashier’s check/company check payable to “EMBASSY OF VIET NAM”.

Other supporting documents (if any): copy of visa approval document or provision of visa approval reference number issued by the relevant authority of Viet Nam; invitation letter from sponsor/host etc.

If you wish to receive your passport and/or visa sent back to your mailing address by mail: 01 prepaid self-addressed return envelope. To ensure safe delivery of your application package and visa, it is recommended that you use certified mail service offered by USPS, UPS and FedEx with tracking number to check on delivery status. The Embassy shall not be responsible for any loss of documents due to insecure and uncertified mailing service. In case you do not bring along a prepaid return envelope upon submission of visa application at the Embassy, you may use FedEx envelopes available at the Embassy and are required to pay for the additional mailing service.

The process above seems rather straightforward.

I have personally always gotten my Visa on Arrival, but I can see how getting your visa before leaving would be easy just to have it completed and done before leaving. One less thing to worry about when traveling with a large group or small children

What is the Pro’s and Con’s of getting your Visa from the Consulate/Embassy?

  Pro’s:

  Scam Free

If you are worried about submitting for your Vietnam Visa on arrival through a scam site, then bypass those worries and just apply directly with the embassy.

Worry Free

When planning travel and on the actual date of flying, sometimes thinks can feel rushed and overwhelmed. If you get your visa through the consulate/embassy its done and there will be no surprises when you land in Vietnam. This peace of mind is comforting and a huge reason to get your visa through the consulate.

Debit/Credit Card Payment

Many of the consulates/embassies provide an online payment source for you to pay for your Visa before sending your Passport to them for the Visa. Some people enjoy this rather then having to worry about cash payments on arrival in Vietnam.

No Waiting

If you have your Visa already, you will queue up in the immigration line and not have to wait for the “Visa on Arrival” line that can sometimes add over an hour to the immigration process depending on how long the wait is when you arrive. After a long flight, I do find this additional line irritating.

Length of Time

Getting a Visa from your embassy/consulate provides the option for you to apply for single or multiple entry Vietnam Visa and 1 month or 3 months Vietnam Visa.

  Con’s:

  Time

If you don’t have the luck of living right next to an embassy or consulate, you will have to send your Passport in via the post. This might take up to 6 weeks to get your passport back. If you are great at planning and do this part early, then time may not be a factor that you’ll need to worry about.

Price

Depending on your individual consulate, this might turn out being the most expensive way to get your visa. But the peace of mind might be worth it.

Paying in Check or Money Order

This feels like a bit of a con because I don’t write many checks or get money orders in the days of debit/credit cards. This may not be a big deal for those who often deal with these forms of payments.

Verdict: If I was traveling with just myself or as a couple. I might go for the option of getting my visa on arrival or Evisa listed below. If I was traveling with children or any sort of large group whether its all friends or family, I would prefer to gather all the passports and send them in for a Visa before the trip just for the knowledge that I won’t have any surprises when I land. This is my personal opinion though, and please use all the information provided to find out what works best for you.

What is Visa On Arrival and a Approval Letter?

Okay, here is the deal with the Visa on Arrival.

Step 1: You Fill out some information online and make a payment to receive a Approval Letter. This letter allows you to get a Visa when you land before you go through immigration.

Step 2: You land in Vietnam, before you can go through immigration, you have to wait in line to get your Visa. This is where you will give them your approval letter, a form, and the additional photos you brought along. You will have to also pay a Stamping Fee here, which they would like for you to pay in cash. If you don’t have cash they will have someone escort you to an ATM inside the airport( I have had this happen before)

Step 3: Once your passport is stamped, you get your passport back with your visa inside and now you can go through immigration. Enjoy your time in Vietnam ?

What are the Pro’s and Con’s for the Visa On Arrival?

  Vietnam Visa on Arrival Pro’s:

  Time

You can sign up for your approval letter rather quickly, and in just a few days receive the letter allowing you to travel to Vietnam and get your Visa.

Price

The Visa on Arrival might be a little bit cheaper than sending your Passports to the embassy or consulate in your home country. This does depend on each country individually as the price for the visa differs country to country.

Emergency Travel

In Emergency cases you can get your Approval letter in just 4 hours. This does depend on the time and availability of the immigration office and the agency you are using for you letter.

Location

The Visa on Arrival does not require you to go out of your way when preparing for a trip to Vietnam. After receiving your Approval Letter via email, the only thing you need to do is fly to Vientam where you will get your visa right when you get off the plane.

Length of Time

The Vietnam on Arrival provides the option for you to apply for single or multiple entry and 1 or 3 months.

  Vietnam Visa on Arrival Con’s:

  Scams

I have used the Visa on Arrival process every time I have needed to travel when I first came to Vietnam before receiving my Residency card. There was never an issue i had with scams but apparently it does happen, so often that you can find warnings issued on Vietnam Embassy websites as you can see here:

Personally, I have had no issue using an online service, but it is important to be made aware that these services are not the Vietnamese Government so they do hold some risk when relying on them for your visa.

Time

I have marked time as a pro when it comes to getting the approval letter, but the time spent waiting for your stamp after a long flight can be excruciating. I have also waited for hours at the airport when friends and family were waiting to receive their Visa stamp before going into already long immigration lines.

Miscommunication/Errors

I believe the biggest con here is that if there were any issues in your Approval letter process, then you might have a difficult time on arrival that will not be a great way to start your vacation. The other issue here is that sometimes people forget, I have been caught at the Visa on Arrival window myself with no cash for the stamping fee. That was painful after a long flight. A different example, my friend forgot her photos to give to the VOA when she arrived so she had to take time to get new photos and pay for that. While not expensive, its just painful after a long flight and doesn’t provide a “I’m ready for vacation” mood.

Not applicable for Land or Sea Arrival

The Vietnam on Arrival ONLY applies to travelers coming into Vietnam through an International Airport in Vietnam. This leaves Land or Sea Arrivals needing a different way to get a visa like the Vietnam E-Visa.

Verdict: Visa on Arrival is really useful if you are in a pinch and need a visa quickly. If that is the case, then that one pro outweighs all of the cons of the Vietnam Visa on Arrival. If you are planning your vacation in advance, then getting your visa before you arrive might be a better option.

What is the Vietnam E-Visa?

I am glad you asked! The Vietnam E-visa is an excellent step forward for Vietnam. Adapting their tourism policies and infrastructure to their customers needs is very important and we are so excited to see that happening last year with the introduction of Vietnam E-Visa.

The first and most important thing you need to know about the Vietnam E-Visa

Any other site is not an E-Visa and is either a scam or just signing you up for the Visa on Arrival.

Alright, Now that we have that cleared up let's get into understanding what you’ll need for the E-Visa.

You will need a photo of yourself that looks like this. Your face will need to be clear with a white or light colored background.

The next thing you will need is a clear photo of your passport details that looks like this.

Here are a few tips from struggles we have read about online.

Be sure that your photos are Jpeg images

You might need to resize the photo so that it is smaller for upload if you are using a photo from your phone rather than scanning your passport and photo. This can easily done by opening Paint program and resizing the photo to a smaller size.

To resize the image copy:

Right click on the image file in the File Explorer, select Open With, Paint.

Select main menu item Image, Stretch/Skew … Change the Horizontal and Vertical percentages to a percentage less than 100. Keep the percentages equal to preserve the aspect ratio.

Select the main menu item File >> Save As to save the resized image.

After you have all that, its a simple process of filling in and submitting the form.

You will need to pay $25 for your Vietnam E-Visa which is Single Entry for 30 days which should cover most travelers coming to Vietnam.

The Pro’s and Con’s of the Vietnam E-Visa

  Vietnam E-Visa Pro’s:

  Cheap

The E-Visa is the cheapest option out of all three. At $25 for a 30 day single entry this is a nice price compared to the charge by embassies and consulates. Its not such a far departure from the price for Vietnams Visa on Arrival but still cheaper.

Credit/Debit Payment

This is the only option for paying your full Visa fee with a credit or debit card.

3-5 Day Approval

Receiving your Visa back in 3-5 days is great turn around for the complete Visa.

All Ports

You can use your E-Visa at every port of entry into Vietnam.

Simple Process

After viewing the website and entry form, this is a simple process to get your visa.

Peace of Mind

Once you have received your Visa with No Errors on it, you are 100% done, just go right through immigration when you get to Vietnam with no worries. Personally, this is my favorite part, I like knowing that things are complete and done with no hang ups.

  Vietnam E-Visa Con’s:

  No Option For Multi Entry or Longer Stay

The current process doesn’t allow for travelers to select anything other than the 30 day single entry Vietnam Visa. If you need to leave and come back, you will need to have another Visa.

Filling out Forms

Currently, you can only apply for 1 visa at a time on the website. This means a family of 4 will have to enter in 4 different forms and make 4 different payments on the government website for the Vietnam E-Visa. This is a bit painful for most of us, but might be worth it when considering the price.

Website Issues

It seems that the website has some issues every now and again not letting people submit photos. These seems to be debugged rather quickly and sometimes are user errors but it travelers should still be aware.

Typos

Some name Typos may occur on your visa, these issues can from from the user or the immigration office. Either one still causes an issue going through immigration if the name on your Visa doesn’t match your passport. Please check each name carefully.

This wraps up most everything you would need to know when it comes to getting a Vietnam Visa. As you can see there are multiple options with multiple pro’s and con’s.

My problem is this, In July 2007 A man in a huge truck with a trailer hinge back up out from a parking space, it I saw him and the only thing I could at the time is speed up so he would not hit the middle of my car. Bought a new one, then I took it to a man at midas , he said I needed a valve cover gasket and he showed me my spark plugs we filled with oil, fixed that. Now Midas ran a scan and said I had either a bad map sensor or a short. Changed the map sensor the car is still barely running, so then another place said it was a short but had it for two weeks and could not find the short . I would like to know , if the guys Insurance is still on the hook for all the problems I have had with the car since the accident. Now I give these two guys a ride from work each day and they knew there was nothing wrong with my car before the accident. What is the best thing I can do. Many thanks , Sylvia""
