been thinking long and hard abt soda and what it did to him to drop out of high school (i also feel bad bc somehow the only fics i have abt soda are all ships and i know i can do better for my boy)

so here’s a quick lil thing abt darry and soda after soda dropped out :p

darry couldn’t remember the last time soda had been this upset. even after their parents died, there were moments when the gang was all together and soda could laugh and feel the littlest bit normal again, but this felt like it was never going to end, and there was no reprieve. there was no end in sight, and darry couldn’t do anything to help him.

his grades had been going downhill for a while. it wasn’t his fault, or at least not entirely. it had been years since soda had done alright in school on his own instead of barely scraping by, and at some point the class had left him behind and it was like they started speaking another language.

and then their parents died.

soda already had enough trouble missing one day of school, let alone missing a week while they tried to throw together a funeral.

a month after their parents had died, after far too many nights at the kitchen table crying over math homework, after screaming matches that shook the roof over his grades, after darry had yelled so many times about how failing out of school was a surefire way to get them sent to a boy’s home, soda finally said that he was dropping out of school.

he could barely leave his room after telling darry, he couldn’t even tell ponyboy himself. he didn’t know what to do with himself, battling with his own mind every hour of the day. thoughts bouncing around his head of feeling like a failure for not even being able to graduate high school, bullying himself over not being able to joke around about it or making other people happy, which felt like maybe the only thing he was good at anymore. he knew that he was going to fail out eventually, so what was the point?

“soda?” darry cracked the door open, his eyes landing on his little brother where he had been for the last three days: curled up in bed, his back to the door. “do you want some dinner?”

soda silently shook his head.

darry sighed, “you can’t stay in here, forever, pepsi. we miss you out there.”

soda didn’t give much of a response, just gave a half hearted shrug.

“listen,” darry let himself into the room, sitting down on the bed and bringing a hand up to rub soda’s back. “i know you feel lousy, and i know you’ve got a lot on your mind, but you’ve gotta get back to living, soda. you’ve just gotta. we couldn’t get along without you.”

soda rolled over and sat up, and darry had to swallow a gasp at the state of his brother. soda’s eyes were rubbed raw and angry red from crying with deep shadows stamped under them, his hair was sticking up at all angles from the grease he hadn’t washed out in days, and his clothes were wrinkled and hanging loosely off of him.

“soda…”

darry could hardly get the word out before soda had thrown himself at his big brother, tears starting up again. god, he was so tired of crying.

“i’m so sorry,” he cried miserably, clutching to darry with everything he had in him.

darry felt the tears hit his shoulder and his heart ached for his little brother, “i know, i ain’t mad at you, honey.”

“mom and dad just wanted me to graduate and i couldn’t even do that! how am i supposed to do anything if i can’t do that?” soda sobbed.

“they’re not mad at you either, baby, don’t say that,” darry could feel tears prickling in his own eyes.

“listen, i don’t care if you’re lyin’ to me,” soda leaned back, his eyes not meeting darry’s. “but can you please tell me it’s gonna be okay.”

darry felt like he had missed a step going down stairs with the way the words made his stomach drop. he grabbed soda’s face in his hands and forced his brother to look at him.

“it’s gonna be okay, baby. i don’t know when and i don’t know how but i promise you, we’re gonna be okay. i’m gonna make sure we are.”

he wasn’t sure soda believed him, and maybe he didn’t even fully believe himself, but he had made a promise, and he had every intention of making good on it. some of the tension soda had been holding in his shoulders seemed to melt away, and darry knew he would be okay with saying everything over and over again if it meant soda didn’t have to be so scared.

“thank you… i know you hate lying to us.”

“i wasn’t lying.”

oh my fuckin GOD I just had such a piss adventure

so I went to a restaurant, and was like oooh free soda refills?? niceee and got like THREE big cups of sprite. I finished two and had a couple decent sips from the last one

and I did pee after the first two, I thought that would take care of it, I wouldn't have to worry for a while

and THEN

I drove some friends home from the restaurant, and thought "oh, I kinda gotta go, would it ve impolite to ask if I can use their bathroom? eh I'll just hold it it's fine" and I was like. DYING by the time I got to theirs

and then I drove away w my one other friend in the front seat and asked where a good bathroom would be and they were like oh sure! I need to go too, can u hold it til you get home tho? and I was like uhhhh. no.

so we decided to head to a grocery store we knew abt. we were like hell yea, it's close right? and then we realized it was like, up to TEN MINUTES AWAY and we had to drive past a LAKE.

i kept having to take deep slow breaths, and at one point I winced bc I got a sharp bladder pain and my friend was like wtf are you good?? and I was like yea I just really gotta go.

I had MULTIPLE different times delaying us-- once, I was going the wrong way until I pulled up my gmaps, and got us turned back around the right way. and then, we had to stop for a cop car to go. AND THEN we saw the accident the cop was rushing to, and I turned a lil to go down another road on the way so I wouldn't get stuck at the scene of the accident-- lol I ended up at the MAIN part of the accident instead 😭 luckily didn't get *stuck,* but definitely slowed a bit... I near rushed the last block to the store

and then I was like okay where's the bathroom and my friend was like uhhh good question! so we walked around. first we went to the back, saw it wasn't to the left of the store, and started walking down the back aisle-- I was nervous that there wouldn't be one at ALL. then my friend came up behind me and was like hey I asked someone, they said it's down at the other end of the store from where we entered but we are going the right direction! and I was like thank god

so we found these two family restrooms and I was like yesss and we each knocked and went inside, luckily they were both empty, and I was SO READY

and then the fuckin toilet was COVERED in droplets of who knows what. i had to wipe the thing down. hell, some employee left a bottle labeled "general purpose disinfectant" so I tried to spritz that on to kill any freaky germs-- and the thing was empty. I squeezed that thing a few times thinking the noise was spritzing, but no, it was literally just empty and my bladder was YELLIN

so I finally WENT and it took a second for me to really feel it bc of how FULL I was but when I did the relief it hit like a TRUCK and I sat there like half a minute at least sighing in relief

I'm still sitting here with my bladder refilling lil bits, and trying to make sure I don't sit desperate in my car again hfjdnfhd

Cute and Caring Noona from Apartment 424: i think deep down inside i knew the apartment thing was gonna come back, even at the time, though i had to promise myself it wouldn't be a series. Yujin and Xiaoting are still a killer duo i'd love to write but it wouldn't fit that well with what i've decided on what the apartment fics will be, instead i'm going with the direction that The Sultry and Pervy Soda in Apartment 307 went and go from there

Like It Like I Love It: EASILY my top 1 from this year. it was everything reader box would have wanted in a yuri fic: a casual relationship, a possibility that there's something more in it, hot sex (literally), and just the right amount (maybe a bit too little) of showing off babygirl yul. i really hope this isn't peak box but going back to why i started writing in the first place, which is that i wanted to see more quality yuri fics, this was something that if i were still a reader would have sated me for at least another year. good job box!

can't remember if I said it out loud on the tl but im not a serious writer! that just means that I dont consciously aim to improve how I write and I'm totally fine with the skills and style I have now, and any exp gained or skills learned is has been passively achieved

that said, I'm really so so happy with Fly in the Night Trip and Love in the Night Train. In my first ever fic i said i wanted my next work to be a smut, and that i would be able to write more of what i wanted on my blog soon. Enjoy was both of those, and i even got to write so much more of my ult bias throughout the year and then some. you could call it self-serving, or as @capslocked so eloquently put it, unconsidered readers, all of you. :sitt:

thats why im really happy to be able to come full circle with another fluff in Love in the Night Train, because i feel like it concludes such an awesome year in such an awesome way. id tell 2023 box that just keeping at it wouldve worked out so well, but the extra effort to write just a tiny bit better, to listen to @midnightdancingsol's advice, to stick with it even though work fucked us up (and still does) is going to be well worth it

ok obviously im not as proud of this one. but each time i did, it was me reevaluating how I run the blog and what sort of stuff I'm getting myself into. it was well worth taking a step back from writing and just figuring out what exactly I wanted to do, and the breaks did wonders for how I paced myself.

these were me asking myself questions that struck the very core of how I conduct this cacophony of a kpop smut blog. it made me aware of arbitrary rules I was holding myself to, and gave me a chance to do away with them. everyone has to clear out their inventory every once in a while, and these were mine :DDDD

ive stopped tracking notes bc I learned since I occasionally write nugu and non-smut to never expect 100+ and I'm always pleasantly surprised when I get there slfjglah but yeah, there's better things to keep track of like what I did above

these are what really matter to me: yuri, writing, and the community i've become part of. while I do think the 1022 club is a fun milestone to celebrate, anything else is a bit more work than i care to make a separate post about (except maybe on bluesky lmao)

OHH!!!! GET READY BC I AM ALWAYS HAPPY TO TALK ABT IT!!! OJ's the leader of this small little bandit group with Light-Bulb and Yin-Yang. Think cartoon lackeys they're super loyal to each other, but all a bit bad at their jobs. For a long time OJ got by without any scratches or cracks in his glass. He thought it was rather impressive- because he's made of glass. No one would ever expect a glass object to be a bandit and survive as long as him! But then one day while he's turned around Paper, the then Sheriff of a town he's attacking, shoots him in the back. Now he has this super ugly crack in the top of his glass. He's devastated. So so sad. But he's like you know what! We did good today! Tries to look on the good side of it all. He gives his two companions a lil speech, praising them for how good they did, holds up a carton of orange juice for a toast- dumps it into himself- And its spoiled.

After getting spoiled he complains for like an entire day. He's SO ANNOYING. but he's sick. So YY and LB put up with it. When they finally get to a new town, he's not really thinking right and gives YY all of their life savings. He tells Yin-Yang to get new orange juice but Yin-Yang is SOOO sick of him that he just has to kick OJ over before leaving to get it. Lightbulb feels bad tho, so she fills him up with some soda they have and Fizzjay is born!!! (Yk how different liquids affect OJ's mood? Fizzjay is like he's on a sugar rush.) Fizzjay and LB steal a carriage, rob a bank, lose the police by exploding a water tower, then he crashes into the store Paper and Silver are at causing another fire and burning all the money..... (forgot to mention but somehow everywhere he goes a fire starts. its rarely even intentional 😭) He challenges Paper to a duel- but then moments before it begins the soda wears off. He realises how stupid it is but its too late! Paper shoots him.

There's also the fact that he and Paper are childhood friends. It isn't until the duel that OJ realises. For a while Paper thought he was dead. OJ disapeared as a child after a fire burned down their home, and he's been a bandit ever since. Now Paper get's that second shot on him, the one in the very middle of his glass (DONT ASK HOW HE DIDNT DIE OBJECT PHYSICS) he's stalled recognizing him and Yin-Yang has to save OJ in the very last minute from a fight from Evil Paper. Currently (since its an RP) We've just gotten back to them. He's being pathetic again. Super sad bc he's got an ugly crack and his Childhood friend is sooo disapointed in him. But LB and Yin-Yang are gunna cheer him up.

This post started out with a point then turned into rambling abt the stage show lol

So like. at least in my irl circle and from what I heard yesterday, a lot of ppl prefer the musical to the movie. Acknowledging the bias of theatre ppl toward theatre, that's not the reason I heard most; what I heard most is that the musical stays closer to the book than the movie. Granted idk how many if any of these ppl have seen the complete novel extended cut of the movie, but even so this argument sits wonky with me

Bc the musical takes quite a few departures from the book, some p dramatic. Darry is not the gang's leader, Dally is. Randy is an ensemble part with one line; Cherry gets his ending "even if you win, nothing will change" moment. Sandy is already gone. Evie and Sylvia are gone. Steve is not a big part of Soda's life. Two Bit isn't acknowledged as an alcoholic. Johnny was only jumped a week ago, and it's not a secret who did it. Bob is the one who jumps Pony at the start and even comes up with an excuse for it. Dally doesn't give Johnny his heater, Dally commits a far more direct suicide, no sickness or court proceedings, so on and so forth.

Now I understand why we made just about all of these changes: the show is just about 2 hours as is, not counting intermission; streamlining needed to happen, for time and for clarity of storyline. I even prefer a lot of the changes (Cherry is just. Such a livelier character lmao. She's given stuff to DO. I love her in the book and movie but the stuff they added in the musical I simply love.) I bring this up just bc it. Is honestly just as different as the movie if not more so in how it departs from the source material.

Which means when ppl are saying it's closer to the book, they mean in feel.

And in many avenues; talking about the the extreme accessibility of the book as an adult with other adults, attempting to articulate my issues with the film adaptation, and then later attempting to defend the movie on those same shortcomings, I think I know why.

It's the ever-present narration. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Ponyboy tells his story, he doesn't show. And that makes the book an extremely straightforward read, and absolutely how he can tell us so much shit that happened in so little time, but it also makes it hard to capture in a standard movie adaptation, especially when the movie also needs to trim down and streamline characters and plot points.

But what does Pony do throughout the musical? He narrates. Yes the story plays out real time, but it's still interspersed with these slowdowns where he talks to the audience, where he's narrating.

And I think that's what's really clicking so well with the musical, despite all the changes to characters and their dynamics and plot beats.

And for certain things, the impact is still there, they just changed it around. Johnny was jumped last week instead of months ago and we don't get the excerpt abt how he wound up buying his first blade, and how he would kill the next soc who tried to jump him, and Dally no longer gives him his gun, but he does give him the 6 inch switchblade when Johnny is genuinely worried his dad will kill his mom, and then shows him how to stab to kill. The circumstances are different, but we still get Dally giving Johnny a lethal weapon. The motivation changes for why Johnny carries his blade, from self defense to an explicit want to protect others, but this makes it a more direct setup for when he kills Bob to save Pony.

And a lot of the straight up original additions to the plot feel seamless. The added backstory for Cherry's parents, her dad's alcoholism and her mom's kind of just. Surrender to hopelessness and despair. Not only explains why she's so touchy about Bob drinking, but it makes the change from going along with him to stop a fight into her refusing to back down after breaking up feel justified. To be clear, I don't fault book and movie cherry for doing what she does in that scene, she's trying to keep everyone else safe, I just think that the change was set up and well executed in the musical.

Also sidenote but in Justice For Tulsa...I have so many feelings after getting to see it. The cop shining his flashlight down on Two Bit as he gets jumped, but then he just keeps on walking bc why would he care abt a greaser...Bev buying right into the boys' escalation against the greasers vs Cherry's outright rebuke and then Marcia is over here looking genuinely Physically nauseous over having to choose a side. And of course the moment where the cop beats Dally after handcuffing him, that speaks for itself.

(Sidenote, unrelated to anything, I just wanna say when I listened to the soundtrack for the first time, years since I had read the book or watched the movie, somehow I just knew when the soc boys started singing their threatening section, that they were jumping two bit. I guess I just had a faint buried memory that Two Bit was the revenge-jumping victim lol)

Hmm first of all sorry for taking forever to respond to this anon but I’ve been thinking abt it, I don’t think they’d actually like formally come out tbh, I think it would be more of either Pony or Soda just sneaking around with their partner until Darry inevitably catches them at one point and it’s awkward for a little but then Darry’s like “you know I’m not mad at you, right?” and whoever it is instantly feels sm better. anyways yeah ilmari and the twins don’t really tell her anything either because they don’t really see it as anything worth telling her about, especially in comparison to way more important things like the fact that lance will sometimes sneak you dessert before dinner if you can convince eugene he has a gray hair without him catching on. so obviously emery grows up fairly unaware of anything varian has done but the defining factor is that shes constantly hearing about it out of context and is just left to struggle with that enigma.

like you know the experience of being like 14 years old at the family thanksgiving and you get to sit at the grown ups table for the first time and hear about all their weird beef and inside jokes and also hear your aunt mention out of context that hey your dad went to prison once bc that’s LITERALLY what the tangled kids experience in relation to their parents’ pasts. like the twins forgot about most of what varian told them by the time they grew up, they knew the watered down version of what happened with cass but they never knew the little details right. so they’ll just be hanging out playing checkers together while the adults are sitting across the room chatting over drinks and varian jokes “oh man its just like that one time cass kidnapped me” and all the kids immediately whip their heads around like “WHAT?”

this is ESPECIALLY true with emery who’s parents are notorious for having more insults for each other than pet names. em could just be reading by the fireplace late one night and var and hugo come out for a midnight snack and just start talking like

- paul gets his bachelor’s in business, but doesn’t really know what he wants to do with it, so he starts doing what everyone else does and works for his father. gets married, is miserable, and wants to get divorced, like everyone else does.

- once ponyboy graduates, darry manages to work his way through a junior college program with what he’s been saving and keeps working full time

- they meet on accident one day while darry is working on paul’s sister’s place (im stealing penny from my other au- check the tags for more abt her) and god it’s SO awkward but penny tells them that they should catch up over dinner and they’re both too polite to say no

- they manage to actually speak at dinner, it’s pretty tense and they don’t really want to be there but they don’t kill each other and by the end of it they might have even had…fun?

- i haven’t decided how long it’ll take them to get back together BUT eventually they start hanging out one-on-one pretty often and they finally have *the talk* and decide that they want to try again

- but plot twist! paul has a six-year-old daughter with his ex (there’s gonna be a PLETHORA of posts about her bc girly is my new hyperfixation and ngl) and one day they’re at lunch and paul has to do a swap and he just looks and darry and his heart DROPS and he goes, “oh, right, uh, this is stella :)”

- and of courseee darry is SO good with her and she loves him bc he’s basically like her fun uncle (send me asks about stella i dare you)

- a little while passes, darry and paul get closer and eventually want to move in together, buttt darry doesn’t want to leave his home so paul and stella move in with them

- everything is pretty awesome and they’re happy and in love but paul absolutely HATES his job,, so naturally one day he has the oh so smart idea that they should just start doing their own thing

- darry had been having problems with the leadership at his roofing job for a while (getting passed up for promotions, disrespect, etc.) and he basically knew his whole team would follow him if he tried to start his own venture

- paul uses his degree (and let’s face it: his parent’s influence and money) to get them a startup loan, and he runs things on the business side while darry and his team work on houses (like fixer upper but it’s like 1972 lol)

- over the years, darry managed to pay off the mortgage on the curtis house, and soda (and cherry OOP) can afford to stay there so darry isn’t worried about losing their family home, so he and paul eventually move into a bigger place for them and stella

- they might not make it out of tulsa, but they make the best of being stuck there, and they open up a building company
