I strongly suspect that what happened between Lian and Kuea has been much more of a give and take than either of them realized. Lian got more serious because he's supposed to take care of Kuea and Kuea started being more obedient/perfect because his parents told Lian to look after him and he just wants to live up to everyone's expectations... and the more serious Lian got the more Kuea pulled away and the more Kuea pulled away the more serious Lian got and now they're both totally different people together and they know it and they hate it but they don't know to change it.
