I Need Some Sleep

A/N: Well, I wasn't kidding when I said I was gonna write the little scenario I described in this post and that nobody could stop me. I've always imagined dancing with Vash to this song from the Shrek 2 soundtrack because it reminds me so much of him. I listened to it while writing, so I encourage listening to it while you read. Enjoy. Warnings: Honestly, none, really. This one's wholesome, I swear

Sleepless nights weren't a new thing for Vash.

Over the many years he'd lived and spent wandering across the deserts of No Man's Land, he'd often found that sleep was just as elusive as the supposed Mayfly of love he had once joked about. Endless thoughts, what-ifs, and memories always seemed to haunt him once the glow of the moons was the only light left, and his mind never seemed to have an off switch. No matter what he did, no matter how many walks he took, no matter how much he tried to meditate or focus on trying to quiet his mind, sleep never seemed to come when he wanted it to.

As he stared at the ceiling of his little private cabin and listened to the steady rumble of the sandsteamer as it chugged along its route through the sand seas, Vash found himself feeling especially restless. He wondered to himself what it was that kept him awake this time - was it the usual, overwhelming sense of self-loathing he felt? Or the guilt that threatened to drown time every time he remembered that he'd failed to save somebody? Or was it just the worry he felt at the fact that you, his longtime travelling companion and one of his best and only friends, didn't end up in a cabin near his?

After what felt like at least a couple hours, Vash let out a deep sigh and gave up trying to identify the cause of his wakefulness, accepting that it was likely a result of a combination of all the things usually troubling him plus worry for you. Simultaneously, he decided to stop trying to force himself to sleep, knowing it would do him no good to continue trying at this point.

'Well... the least I can do is go make sure (Y/N)'s safe.' Vash thought to himself, standing and stretching while trying not to smash his head on the low ceiling of his cabin before quietly heading out to go check on you.

The sandsteamer almost felt abandoned. There wasn't a single soul in sight, not even a single straggler or drunk who'd lost their way back to their cabin. As Vash walked through the halls, he found himself thinking of you, wondering if you'd managed to fall asleep with the rumbling of the sandsteamer and the rare situation of having a room to yourself.

More often than not, you and Vash shared rooms and beds in inns, motels, or whatever accommodations you could find from time to time in order to save double-dollars, and the two of you were more accustomed to falling asleep with the other nearby, the sounds of the other's breathing and the way you both moved in sleep familiar to each other. So, to suddenly be greeted by complete and utter silence and a lack of your warmth was more than unsettling to Vash, more so than he cared to admit.

Not having you tucked up by his side as you slept felt... wrong.

He missed the feeling of your warmth against his body, the softness of you pressed up against him as you slept undisturbed, at peace by his side, peace that he brought you. He missed the sight of your face, somehow more youthful as you slumbered on. He missed the sound of your deep, steady breaths. He missed the scent of you and the way it would linger on his clothes the following morning.

He missed you.

However, Vash was quick to brush those thoughts away, shaking his head to himself as he approached your cabin. He couldn't be thinking about you like that. He couldn't be feeling about you like that. After all, it wouldn't be fair to you. You deserved better than the pitiful, stressful, touch-and go, unsettled life that Vash could offer you, even if he would love you better than anybody else ever could if you gave him the chance. In his eyes, in his mind, it wasn't enough for you. He wasn't enough for you. You deserved better.

However, all his self-deprecating thoughts disappeared the moment he realized that you weren't in your cabin.

'Where did you go?'

Trying hard to quell his rising panic, Vash decided to head up to the open-air decks first and look for you there, as he knew sometimes you, too, had difficulty sleeping. In those times, he tended to find you stargazing, your eyes glued to the heavens, mesmerized by the way the stars seemed to sparkle and dance in the night sky.

So, without wasting a second longer, Vash began to make his way up to the deck.

He walked much faster than he normally did, trying desperately to stop himself from breaking into a sprint all the way up to the deck and preventing his panic from overtaking him completely.

Yet, despite all his efforts, he found himself thinking on repeat, 'Please be safe. Please be safe. Oh, Gods, please let (Y/N) be safe.'

As Vash got up to the deck, he looked around for you, moving around as quickly as he could, desperation and fear beginning to take root in his heart when each place he searched came up empty.

Then, thankfully, he found you.

You sat on a bench on the deck, your head tilted up and your eyes on the heavens, watching the stars as the desert wind ruffled your clothes and hair. When you heard Vash's footsteps, you quickly glanced over to see who was approaching, your body tensing as if anticipating a fight. However, when you realized who it was, you quickly relaxed, an easy and genuine smile appearing on your lips.

"Oh, hey, Vash." You greeted your best friend with a small wave of your hand.

Trying hard not to let his relief be so obvious, Vash came over and sat on the bench next to you, smiling back at you warmly, "Hey, (Y/N). Couldn't sleep?"

"Nah," you answered, sighing softly as you leaned back against the bench, looking out at the endless dunes that passed as the sandsteamer chugged along. "It was simultaneously too loud and too quiet in my room. I couldn't get comfortable."

"I can understand that." Vash chuckled softly, following your gaze out onto the horizon. He let himself relax next to you, all his previous panic and worry fading away as he caught your scent, carried by the breeze.

A comfortable, familiar silence fell over the two of you as you sat there next to each other, taking in the sights of the sea of sand, the night sky and the moons that glowed bright enough to cast shadows. After a few minutes of silence, you allowed yourself to move a bit closer to Vash, letting your head rest on his shoulder as you let out a small sigh.

"It feels weird, sleeping without you being nearby." The words spilled from your lips before you could stop yourself. "I don't like it."

The flutter that Vash's heart gave betrayed the depth of his feelings for you, but he ignored it, focusing instead on answering quietly, "I don't like it, either. I'm not used to sleeping alone, anymore, I guess."

You found yourself looking up at the blonde gunman sitting next to you, a curious look on your face and a hint of worry seeping into your words. "Is that a bad thing?"

Vash couldn't stop himself from looking down at you, his eyes meeting yours as he pondered the answer. Then, after a couple moments, his lips turned upward into a small, amused smile. "No. It's not a bad thing."

You could feel your body relaxing slightly as you let out a breath you hadn't even realized you had been holding. Vash wanted to laugh at just how endearing your obvious relief was, but he restrained himself, instead turning his head so he could tear his gaze away from you, his heart pounding frantically in his chest.

After a couple more moments of comfortable silence between the two of you, you whispered softly, "You need some sleep, Vash."

Your care and concern for him was so obvious, your every word and the tone of your voice so telling that it made Vash want to scream. Instead, he simply offered you a quiet, weak laugh, "Yeah, I know. I just can't seem to get my mind to quiet down is all."

That made you pull away from him, your gaze remaining fixed on his face as you studied him carefully. You knew that Vash struggled with a lot more than what he shared with you, and that he carried a lot more scars than just the physical ones that marred his body. There were scars on his soul, more than you could ever think to know. You could only imagine how heavy a weight he carried on his shoulders and in his heart, and how badly you wished that he'd share some of the load with you. You knew better, though, than forcing him to do so, and you knew that when and if he decided to share any of the burden with you that you would carry it gladly.

Wordlessly, you stood up from the bench, turning so you were facing Vash and extending your hand out to him. Vash looked up at you quizzically, clearly not understanding what was going on. The determination and glint of something he couldn't place in your eyes, however, led him to offer you his prosthetic hand, gently resting it in yours.

Without hesitation, you tugged on his hand gently, clearly wanting him to stand with you. Vash followed your silent requests without complaint or question, but his curious expression remained, his blue eyes trained on your every move. As the two of you stood, you guided one of Vash's hands to your waist, trying hard not to let the heat rise to your face as you did so, before taking his other hand in yours and resting your free hand on his shoulder. Then, slowly, you began to sway the two of you back and forth, as if to some tune.

After a couple seconds, Vash settled into his stance, allowing himself to sway with you on the spot, a small chuckle escaping him. "(Y/N)? What are we doing?"

"Isn't it obvious, Stampede?" You replied, looking up at him with a playful little smile. "We're dancing."

"I figured that much out for myself, oddly enough." Vash answered with a proper laugh, his smile becoming more genuine as he kept his warm gaze on you. "I meant more along the lines of "why are we dancing?"."

You shrugged. "It seemed like a nice night for a dance."

Vash couldn't help but laugh softly at your reasoning, and he let himself relax and enjoy the gentle swaying of the two of you. Tightening his grip on your waist, he gently began to turn the two of you as you swayed, both of you completely unbothered by the lack of music. The thrumming of the sandsteamer's engine, the whistling of the wind, the shifting whisper of the sands, were your music.

You found yourself getting closer and closer to Vash the longer the two of you danced together, unsure if it was you stepping closer to him or him pulling you in or some combination of the two, but you couldn't bring yourself to care. As your head came to rest on his chest and you felt Vash rest his chin on the top of your head, you let your eyes close, focusing on the feeling of Vash against you.

He was your safe space. Your home, in every way that it mattered. Your heart was his, even if he didn't know it, and always would be. And right now, on the deck of the sandsteamer, there was only the two of you in the world, as far as you were concerned. You knew that Vash needed some way to get his mind off his worries so that he could rest, and maybe, just maybe, this would do the trick.

Meanwhile, Vash finally felt his mind fall quiet, his focus solely on you and holding you close to him as the two of you gently rocked from side to side in time to some silent tune. Somehow, just the feeling of you in his arms and dancing with you in the middle of the night on the deck of a sandsteamer was enough to pull him away from the suffering that plagued his mind. You were a soothing balm to the torn, raw and bleeding mess that was his soul.

"You finally dozin' off on me, (Y/N)?" Vash's voice teased you playfully after a couple minutes of silence, a gentle undertone to his words.

You reopened your eyes, pulling your head away from his chest so you could look up into his eyes. "Not yet. I'm just enjoying this. Besides, I don't think I'll be able to sleep when I'm alone again."

A slight frown appeared on Vash's face at your statement, and he whispered back before he could stop himself, "You don't have to be alone."

Your eyes widened as you looked at him, and you could've sworn you saw his cheeks and the tips of his ears darken slightly as he said that. Uncertainty filled you, but so did the overwhelming need to accept Vash's thinly-veiled offer.

All you could bring yourself to ask was, "Are you sure?"

Vash nodded slowly, his eyes not leaving yours for a moment despite the deepening of his blush. "I'm sure. I'd prefer to have you nearby, anyways. It always makes me nervous when you're not close enough for me to protect you."

That made your heart flutter wildly in your chest, and you could feel the heat rising to your own face now as you answered, "You don't always have to protect me, you know?"

Something in Vash's face shifted, a resoluteness taking its place in his eyes as he looked at you, his voice firm and leaving no place for argument or negotiation. "Yes, I do, (Y/N)."

You felt the heat in your face intensify at his resolve and determination to protect you, and while you desperately wanted to ask him where this was coming from, you didn't have the courage to start down that road.

Not yet.

Instead, you asked quietly, "Should we head back, then?"

You could've sworn you felt Vash's grip on your waist tighten a bit, pressing you against him just a little more than before. His expression became warm and tender as he continued to spin the two of you, something you couldn't quite identify shining in his eyes and a genuine smile appearing on his lips.

"Not yet. We've only just gotten started."

One of the most interesting aspects of Legato as a character is that he's the only one who makes both Vash and Knives act against their principles at some points.

Everyone already knows that Legato was the first human that Vash killed willingly and while fully conscious, but just before that Vash was able to break free of Legato's control by "throwing off the shackles of the no-kill rule".

Somewhere I already made a post trying to translate this part more accurately, but I'm too lazy to look for it. A rough translation is "Vash the Stampede's body. And the pointed wings that emerged from it. No supernatural force could hold it all down. But that's why, up until this very moment, these two [forces] have been in perfect opposition. They [Legato and Vash] didn't realize it themselves yet..."

"...but one thing has changed. It was the time Vash Stampede threw off the shackles of his no-kill rule that he'd bound himself with for decades."

I interpret it as follows: Vash subconsciously restrained his Plant powers by not wanting to kill Legato, thus helping Legato without even realizing it. In other words, in this scene Vash not only lets his "dark" side come out by starting to fight to kill, but also accepts his Plant nature. In other words, Legato succeeded in doing what Knives failed to do: earlier, even Knives couldn't force Vash to fight like Plant.

That's the case with Vash, but as I wrote Knives also occasionally behaves contrary to his own words and beliefs with Legato. I've written about this many times before, though. For example, in the post at the link below, I mentioned three instances where Knives left Legato alive even though he had no particular reason to do so.

Note that each of those decisions to let Legato live resulted in Legato saving Knives' life later. And it wasn't a "return favor" on Legato's part, nor was it a calculation on Knives' part (Knives is really overconfident and each time doesn't even realize he's in trouble). It's purely a narrative device to show how much Knives really needs Legato and that he's invincible as long as Legato is the exception to the "all humans are bad and must die" rule for him.

In fact, if Knives had gone a little farther and accepted Legato as someone important to him (or at least clearly defined their relationship), then probably even Vash wouldn't have stopped Legato. I mean, if Legato hadn't decided to play "who's better, you or me?" with Vash, and instead used his own powers in the most effective way possible, he would have simply taken the entire city hostage and Vash wouldn't have been able to do anything about it.

While watching Trigun Stampede, I ended up binging the Trigun ‘98 anime, and I will try, but no doubt fail, to articulate what it is about VashMeryl that makes me so feral, and I mean in all continuities because the themes rings true for the both of them regardless if it’s TriStamp, TriMax, or the anime.

Many people have praised Meryl’s agency in Trigun Stampede, how a lot of the plot moves because of her contribution, and I can’t help but compare this to the anime, where it was because of her that Vash has a breakthrough in how to deal with Knives (after her and Milly took the time to heal and take care of Vash, ugh, found family for the win). In both TriStamp and the ‘98 anime, Meryl is juxtaposed (contrasted? given a parallel with?) Rem. 

And in the ‘98 anime, after Vash’s battle with Knives, he finds the peace to move on, casting aside what was in a way his clutch to Rem (his red geranium coat) to come back home to Meryl and Milly. 

And I love the ‘98 anime because of the implications, that he willingly sheds his outlaw persona for a chance to live a quiet life with Meryl, Milly, and his brother. It was Meryl who gave him the hope to do that, through her words, her invitation to stay together permanently, and even through her actions in standing up for him. (Honestly, the only thing that would have made the ‘98 anime ending perfect for me is if we had Wolfwood. Which is why if Knives could survive 1/3 of the continuities, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Trigun Stampede is the continuity where Wolfwood actually gets to survive). 

Even in the manga, he makes a promise to return to her, and though he ends up quite late, he does end up making his way back to Meryl and Milly eventually.

I love how there’s a chain of influence that happens, and the parallels between the two. Rem says she had been influenced in her ideals because of the person she loved, Alex. Vash is influenced by her, and eventually Meryl is influenced by Vash to the point that she’s ready to stake her life for what he believes in, such that it becomes her ideals too. 

“You can’t save everyone, you can only be there for them.” And this really rings true for Meryl in that while she can’t save him the way Vash tries to save everyone around him, she can still be there for him, whether it’s staying and trying to help him when no one else won’t (Trigun Stampede), making a home for him to return to (’98 Trigun), or telling him to unburden himself because he’s not alone (TriMax). He’s superhuman but he gets hurt like anyone else. I love that Meryl doesn’t scoff at his ideals or tell him to stop, but just helps him in whatever way she can, the way he tries to help everyone else. She treats him not like some act of God, destruction personified, or a savior, but simply as Vash, a softie who needs a bit of help sometimes (which is why when Meryl ends up scared of him, it was heartbreaking, but again this is something she chose to overcome because her love outweighed her fear). 

But at the same time, she won’t simply wait around. Again, I love her agency. In TriStamp, she chooses to stay behind to help Vash (which was pivotal because who knows if Rem’s spirit would have been triggered if not for her voice) and in TriMax, even if it was Vash who made the promise, when he’s late, what does she do? Goes and meets him herself. 

In every continuity, she’s always aggressively chasing after him. When Vash said in the TriStamp finale that he’d keep running and running, and when it becomes quiet again, he’d settle back by humanity’s side, it sounded so lonely. 

And yet, when Vash runs, Meryl will chase after him. Even when he believes he should be alone because everyone who touches him dies, Meryl still wants to be by his side. Meryl proves over and over again that Vash is loved (in a way, to him as well) because she doesn’t ever want to leave him alone. And again, it’s such a wonderful ending in both versions (the anime and TriMax) that when Vash eventually does stop running, it’s to Meryl (and Milly) that he returns home to.

Now I'm picturing a scenario where rem just. Unexpectedly comes back to life a la some deus ex machina plot twist and getting scared about what will happen when she finds out what roleswap vash became...

Okay! Well! That's sad! You get how sad that is, right? I don't even like thinking about that! Good god!

I think Vash is the most militant pacifist I've ever read in fiction, and is probably the character most frequently challenged on that pacifism. It's literally The Entire Thing. It's The Point. Trigun explores what it means and its very real consequences with incredible depth. And I always found it really interesting how, for the vast majority of 98, what keeps Vash adherent to his pacifism isn't really any kind of philosophical reason. It's because killing somebody would be killing his mother - who died a hundred and fifty years ago - and he can't bear that. One hundred fifty years later and he still can't lose her. At what point is it no longer...about the pacifism...

It kind of means that thinking about an alive Rem in Trigun breaks the brain and shuts down the computer. Rem as a character doesn't work if Rem's a person. She's an idea, she's a ghost, she's your peace and innocence. She's the reason for living and she's the salvation of humanity and she's why it should be saved. Mother fucking Mary up in here. Rem, alive, would...just be a guy...everything would break down. I can't imagine what it would do to Vash.

Anyway, roleswap wise: Rem would still love him. She would love him and forgive him. She wouldn't hold an ounce of resentment or anger in her heart towards him. It would reassure her to know that Knives still loved Vash as much as ever, and that he still looks after Vash as an adult. It would break her heart. It would terrify her - not Vash himself, but that something could hurt him so badly that he would turn into this. She would realize that her kids were aliens who she could never truly understand or predict, only influence. She would believe that he could change and get better, and nothing would ever convince her differently. If she ever saw him trying to hurt anybody, she would stand between Vash and his victim and refuse to move. If Knives and Vash told her that they caused humanity to fall, she would forgive them. I think she'd accept that her influence wasn't enough to prevent Knives and Vash from doing what they did, and she'd come to peace with that - that she'd tried, and she failed, and that maybe this was fate.

I think all of this would push Vash truly off the brink. Whatever he would come up with to reconcile the fact that she didn't actually want him to run around murdering people - that she just didn't understand and needed to be convinced, that somebody turned her against him, that obviously this wasn't really Rem because Rem would support what he was doing - wouldn't be good. I think there's several scenarios in which he would kill her.

Meanwhile Knives would be having a WAY more banal weird 'interacting with your parent as an adult' experience. The gang would die of shock that somebody so nice raised the two worst sapients ever. Wolfwood would think she was cute, then feel weird about it.

Last 4 episodes absolutely wrecked my shit, holy fuck.

It was all just soooo delicious. The drama, the losses, the mind games, the doubt, the belief found anew. It was absolutely what I wanted from the show, and it delivered, serving it like a medium stake with a glass of red wine.

Spoilery thoughts under cut for posterity.

First of all, can't walk past Wolfwood deciding at the end that maybe he IS better than that and refusing to murder, and THAT gets him killed right after Vash failed to save someone again. Just masterful one-two punch both into Vash's soul and mine.

And I absolutely LOVE Nickolas' confession scene. His relief of finally finding the way that felt right to him, at long last, and the desperation in the face of inevitable death were just crushing. Watching it made me want to squeeze my own ribs as hard as I can. That's what I call Good Shit. I don't know if it's right to call this cruelty, but it sure felt like one, watching him filling up with new purpose and desire to live only to have barely a minute left. There is no closure, only more open wounds for everyone involved. Chief's kiss.

And how in the next episode Vash is accused of just running away from responsibility, and that he is as much of a murderer as everyone else, and only fooling himself with insistence that he is free of sin. Because, yeah, I've actually been thinking about this too for almost the whole series. And it's even brought up rather earlier in the ep. Lost July, where a victim of July Town destruction points out to Vash how his action actually got people killed. You don't need to put a bullet between someone's eyes to end their life. His hands ARE stained.

And he knows that. That's why he is so desperate to save everyone. He is not stupid. It's absolutely true. If it wasn't, Midvalley's and Legato's words wouldn't have affected him so strongly. Just the fact that his devote pacifism is a fond memory of a person he loved and respected, a distant dream, a single point of ethical superiority over his brother, and an attempt at atonement all wrapped in one. The layers on this man just never end, do they?

I know I just said here and also in previous post that Vash is not a delusional fool, but maybe he actually is, just a little bit. Because him shooting Legato just broke his last line of psychological defense, and he was forced to face all the horror and death that have been following him. And you know what, GOOD FOR HIM. Belief that only direct murder counts needed to be broken for him to be ready to go on. Look at my baby all grown up and not afraid to shoot people anymore. Oh, and also realizing that hey, he messed up, but he will do better.

And look at that, he actually DID beat Knives into submission. Huh.

That actually left me with tons of questions, like. How are you going to reprogram your unhinged twin, my dear? I mean, this man is convinced that he is superior to human race, and it was You, Vash, another plant creature that defeated him in battle, not a human being. As far as he can tell, he was beat by his equal, it doesn't mean he will tolerate humanity any more than he has been for all this time. Are you going to shoot him full of holes every time he starts acting up? Is that the plan? Doesn't sound healthy, not gonna lie. But then again, when your family dynamic was ever healthy after year 1?

Maybe the manga holds the answers. I should check it out. Maybe there the plant creatures are explained. As far as I can tell, the interstellar travel was only possible thanks to plants, so they must have come before the human race left Earth. Curious.

Tumblr won me over with pretty GIFs and amazing fanart to finally sit down and watch Trigun. I started with 1998 series, and it's really good.

God, it seems impossible to not love Vash. As a big time connoisseur of moody angsty characters, I enjoy spicing it up with positive angsty charactets. That's just a good subspecies. And the fact that he holds fast to his idealistic principals in all situations is rather inspiring. Normally I would find that kind of character annoying, because they are often played as naive fools who are detached from reality. But Vash has more depth than that, and he makes it work. With him it looks more like a true and earnest dream rather than delusion. I suppose it's not in small thanks to the fact that he is ready to pay big price and sacrifice so much of himself for the sake of that dream. Even thought Wolfwood wouldn't agree most of the time.

And god, Wolfwood. He plays so good against Vash. All of us is Woolfwood here, I feel. Like, being ready to choose a lesser evil (but evil nonetheless) in bad situations, when Vash would fight tooth and nail to get a third option. And I like how show portrays his methods as also legit options with acceptable outcomes from time to time. Or at least doesn't condemn him outright for the way he thinks. His logic Makes Sense, and it's not hard to agree with him when presented with similar situation.

In the trolley problem Wolfwood would pull the lever to kill one guy when Vash would shoot the trolley untill it derailed and fell on its side without killing anyone, basically.

Like, inside the limits of the problem Wolfwood is right, but in the wider scope Vash's solution is superior, and it requires thinking outside of the box. And a lot of bullets.

I still haven't finished the series, tho I am close. I wonder if Vash's idealism will hold when faced with someone who you just can't beat into submission without strangling them to death. You know, someone like Knives.

just rewatched Trigun for the first time in probably 10 years or so?

Trigun is often extremely compelling, except when its writing becomes very bad, and by bad I mean dissatisfying in terms of internal logic.

production-wise, i get the sense that they blew the majority of the animation budget on the first two or so episodes, because they’re absolutely gorgeous, but in many of the later episodes they take a lot of shortcuts to the point where some scenes are basically slideshows.

writing-wise, there’s a number of really key moments that are intended to be emotional, but they’re so intent on discussing THEMES and making ON-BRAND CALLBACKS that characters start spouting dialogue in moments that are absolutely unfitting for the situations that were set-up, and a lot of the social issues in the later episodes is due to the fact that absolutely none of the main characters ever explain to anyone else, “Okay so there’s this guy named Knives, and he’s totally the reason why bad things happen around Vash”

and i’m not saying everything would be resolved because they’d be automatically believed, but everything Meryl and Vash say in lieu of that rightfully serve only to infuriate all the scared, misguided people precisely because they’re desperately asking for an explanation and instead they’re told some sanctimonious bullshit about how killing is bad, or so it sounds because it has not been explained to them that Vash is not who they think he is.

in hindsight, i mostly stuck around with this rewatch because of how good the first two episodes were, and the richness of the premise they promised. the idea of a pacifistic but extremely skilled gunman with a legendary reputation who is actually a dork IS interesting, especially when combined with the supporting cast. 

If someone pitched to me an RPG campaign idea set in some sci-fi wild west world where we’d be playing as insurance claims agents sent to make contact with an outlaw so fearsome he’s on the verge of being classified as a natural disaster or act of God, i’d tell them to sign me the fuck up. out of all the backgrounds for a supporting cast in this type of setting, that’s a very fresh one.

the way that all the drama in Vash’s backstory which took place aboard giant spaceships intended to colonize other planets effectively turns his past into that planet’s own Creation story in a way, and how this somewhat subtly casts himself and Knives as angels or demigods is actually way cooler to me now than i ever registered the first time I watched Trigun.

but i just don’t find that the whole Vash-Jesus-Job analogue exactly resonates. There’s no tension because Knives and the Gung-ho Guns are effectively all-powerful, and if they’d been even slightly more competent they’d have succeeded in their goals. But it’s also left completely unexplained why the most loyal of the Gung-ho Guns are loyal to the point of death to Knives, and at this point I’m actually just talking about Legato because the rest of them barely exist. but Legato, wow, what a hot mess of a plot device masquerading as a character. 

early on a question is raised: does Vash manage to get out of life-or-death scrapes with zero fatalities (though lots of property damage) due to dumb luck, or because he’s just that good? But the thing is, it’s never truly answered. Legato, in particular, is central to the least satisfying parts of the story. His powers are the most overtly supernatural and staggering in scope. It’s never explained why he has so little regard not only for the lives of other humans, but for his own life, allowing himself to be a total pawn to Knives despite probably being the most powerful character in the setting. Legato’s arc could have been used to help definitively answer the prior question, but it’s resolved in a different way that i’d call a swerve, but ultimately not a good swerve.

there are certain things i don’t mind not being explained, so long as the lack of information doesn’t turn into plot holes. So for example, i don’t really need to know what the Plants are. They’re humanoid and seemingly-sentient, and somehow provide all the resources humans need to survive on a desert planet. That’s fine. Not knowing how they work is fine. That mystery does not distract from the narrative’s comprehensibility.

But the show is very blatantly one wherein the fate of all humanity always falls on Vash’s shoulders, which is a bit too egoistic a story for my tastes--yet this wouldn’t be a problem if it were done well. i don’t think it is, though, not in its totality anyways.

Legato isn’t the only problem, he just happens to be the biggest problem. Legato isn’t so much a character as he is a plot device, a deus ex machina--not one that *resolves* the problems caused by the plot, but rather *creates* the problem that the plot requires so that the story arrives at the resolution the author wants.

Legato was the *facade* of an interesting character--an immensely powerful psychic with no regard for human life who also enjoyed eating sweets in his spare time. He can mind control hundreds if not thousands of people at once. Cool. Why can he do that, and what does he want? The answers to those two questions respectively are, (1) because shut up, that’s why, and (2) because he wants everything Knives wants because of reasons.

and that second part is infuriating, because in failing to address this, the writers miss an opportunity for exposition that would enrich not only Legato but also Knives as characters, at the same time. *how* did Knives convince Legato and also the saxophone guy to do his bidding loyally until death? Why is it that Legato is absolutely devoted to Knives, whereas Saxophone Guy shows some bitterness as they meet their ends to fulfill Knives’ plan? How has Knives secured their loyalty despite hating humans so much? See, those would have made for interesting moments, if they weren’t absolutely shunted off to the side in favor of varied scenes of Vash coughing up blood as he spouts his beliefs in a way that’s usually out-of-context for his audience.

Now, in other fighting superpower anime, i would normally expect a character such as Legato to be defeated once the protagonist figures out a weakness or limitation in his psychic powers and adopts a strategy to target that vulnerability. In a good fighting superpower anime, i might expect that a powerful psychic might have some vulnerability based on a psychological issue or two. that’s intuitive, and would not only be satisfying for the protagonist’s development to figure all that out, it would simultaneously provide an opportunity for deeper characterization of said psychic villain.

the swerve that instead Vash wins by losing, that is, by finally being forced into a situation where he has to (temporarily) violate his own moral code and shooting Legato dead was somewhat dramatic but only because of the buildup. Actually, one thing I unreservedly applaud Trigun about is the restraint they demonstrated in having Vash not even fire a gun for like the first five or six episodes which, in a 26~ episode show is quite an investment. It also spent even more time building  up like 24-25 episodes of Vash not killing anyone, and then suddenly he did. But that’s the only reason it was remotely dramatic. Legato was an enigma and and obstacle but ended up being an empty contrivance, which was disappointing.

in many early episodes, it was very clearly laid out what the villain and guest protagonists’ motives were and why they had them. the writer(s) clearly knew how to do that even within the span of a single mostly self-contained episode. and that makes the bundles of unanswered questions that Legato’s role in the story and also his existence altogether raise that much more grating on my suspension of disbelief.

As soon as Legato’s whole dilemma was resolved, i couldn’t really engage with the story anymore, save to watch the last few episodes for the sake of doing so, and also out of curiosity for where the writers were going with everything. but i was no longer invested in the characters, because at some point they started saying and doing things in a manner meant to tie a bow on the themes the writers had been harping on the whole series, but not in a way that demonstrated any internal consistency or believability as far as the characters themselves.

Vash and Meryl never tell anyone who Knives is because the writers need Vash to forever be a falsely-accused and persecuted Christ analogue. it’s so freaking transparent, and that’s one of a number of similarly unsatisfying elements to Trigun, and it’s a darned shame. because so much of the show is interesting and promising, but it doesn’t really have the follow-through. idk maybe the manga explains everything.

Finally, there’s no good reason why Knives didn’t just kill Meryl and Milly after Legato died. I’m not saying this because I wanted their characters dead or anything. I’m saying it because if Knives’ whole motivation is to hurt Vash, and if Knives thinks of humans like cockroaches, then why wouldn’t he kill Meryl and Milly not long after Vash breaks his own code against killing just to save them? Why not drive that final nail in the coffin just to spite Vash? 

All we know about Knives is that he’s Vash, but evil, he wants to wipe out humanity because he thinks they are inferior to them, and he wants to break Vash emotionally. Everything he does is motivated by spite towards Vash, and misanthropy, so killing Meryl and Milly while Vash is sulking over the abstract notion of taking a human life due to killing Legato would be the final insult to injury and would be 100% consistent with everything we know about Knives.

And this is why I couldn’t stay engaged with Trigun. Vash only adheres to his beliefs because the villains don’t do everything that’s within their power to break him. I’m not saying I wanted a grimdark downer ending. I’m saying that the only reason Trigun doesn’t have one is because the writers wanted a good ending, which clashed with everything they set up. Vash’s reaffirmation of his beliefs simply isn’t earned, not in my book, because the only reason they remain intact is because of either laziness or neglect on the part of Knives or the writers.

The septic egos get into a fight because they found out Jameson lied about where he was going that night. He said he was going to the cinema, but he went to the forest, and was found almost dead by Dark and Wilford. The two Iplier egos brought him to The septic egos house, and are met with a chorus of shouts. (Jameson went into the forest to be alone but an animal or something attacked him.) Maybe, if you wanted to, have Wilford and Jameson be boyfriends or Best friends. Just for the fans :3

Bickering.

“What do you think we’re going to do? We’re going! We made the commitment.” Marvin bellows trying to be heard over the other egos. It’s not a common occurrence to see the whole house up in arms but today is an anomaly. No one really remembers what triggered the spat, but later it’ll be determined it was something Anti said in passing, for now no one give a flying fuck what started it. Mainly because every other word seems to be fuck.

As the voices rise in the living room Jameson finds he can no longer get the peace he needs to ignore the shouting. It’s not even the shouting that bothers him anymore, he just hates seeing his, for lack of a better word than doppelgangers, brothers ready to rip each others throats out. It’s like all there aggression and mixed feelings explode and anything and everything is suddenly and issue.

It always seems to happen when Sean is in a bad spot mentally. Right now Sean is over seas in Ireland visiting his family. Jameson just knows there is a problem with Sean and his family, he feels it deep within his soul. As connected as they all are to Sean not everyone can feel where their anxieties, their spikes in anger, fear, and insecurities come from.

Sitting up Jameson grabs a light weight jacket from his closet and makes his way to the front door. Just as he turns the knob a hand grips his shoulder. Glancing over his shoulder Jameson catches Henrik’s eye.

“Jay, vhere are you going?”

“To the movies.” Jameson responds shaking off Henrik’s hand. “I’ll be back later.” He adds leaving hoping to escape unscathed by the verbal and possible physical assault.

Breathing freely without feeling the stress and tension resonating through out every fiber of his being Jameson feels... relieved. He’d thought about actually going to the movies but the moment he stepped outside he ventured to the right and walked right into the woods. They only recently moved from California the wild lush green of Oregon. It’s a nice change of pace and it makes Sean feel more at home.

However there is a draw back, and one Jameson hadn’t thought of. He’s never wondered through a forest before, or even just a grove of trees. He has no idea where he is going or which direction is home. Usually he follows the road to Wilford’s home not far from his own. The Iplier’s had moved up years before his own family had. 

Pausing to look at the moon Jameson tries to figure out in which direction it is moving and work backwards from that information. This idea does him no good but to drive him further into the trees. Taking a moment to rest on the mossy floor it’s not long before the soft silence of the forest and focusing on the moon lulls him into a light slumber. The summer heat bleeding into the night giving a comforting warmth.

Jameson doesn’t know what exactly woke him, but from the moment he came back into consciousness he’s immediately on alert. Something triggered his fight or flight reaction. Scrambling to his feet Jameson looks around he forest.

Screams in the night wakes up Wilford and Dark from their slumbers. Wilford immediately goes for a short barreled Daniel Defense, a DDMK18. With a 10.3 in long barrel the compact hunting rifle and Wilford loves the sound it makes. One of the only reasons Dark allowed Wilford to bring anymore weapons into the house is for protection against the creatures that can become hostile. 

“Wilford.” Dark greets meeting Wilford at the glass back door. The pair nod at each other and head out. In the three years they’ve been living the only times there are ever screams in the night is when there is an attack on a lost hiker. 

Calmly the pair sweep through their extensive back yard. Scream after scream they track down the source. Wilford lines up his shot and stalls. “Jameson!” Wilford shouts dropping the rifle his heart nearly stopping at the sight of Jameson being attacked, he can’t even hear Dark shout his name.

Moving quickly Dark takes the rifle from Wilford’s hand and takes aim. The sound is deafening in the silent woods. Keeping the fallen beast in his sights Dark cautiously moves forward. A lone wolf. 

Looking around Dark tries to determine if more will come out to attack. Wilford brushes past Dark, nearly knocking him over to scoop Jameson up into his arms. Keeping his attention around them Dark asks, “Is he breathing?”

“He’s alive. We have to get him inside. It all seems superficial, but he’s bleeding really good.” Wilford says cradling Jameson to his chest. Dark nods looking around again. 

“We’re closer to his house than ours. Let’s go.” With that the pair of them pick their way through the woods to the Septic household. While they walked as quietly as possible all they hear coming from the house is shouting and screaming. Knocking urgently Dark waits with Wilford for someone to answer. 

Nearly a minute passes and Dark’s anger gets the better of him. With a swift kick the door bursts inward, slamming into the wall silencing the bickering inside the house. Stepping into the entry way a gathering of angry and confused looking duplicates stares at the trio.

“What are you... What the fuck happened to Jay?” Anti shouts moving quickly to Wilford. In the light of the house Jameson’s wounds look worse. Blood coats him from nearly head to toe, his breath heavy as he clings to life.

“He was attacked in the woods. Now I understand why he was alone. I’d want to get away from the screaming match in here.” Dark responds glaring through the guilty faces.

“Attacked? MOVE!” Henrik shouts rushing through the crowd to look at Jameson. Quickly he orders Wilford to take him into the living room and lay him down on the couch. Wilford helps remove all Jameson’s clothing and assist him with cleaning and assessing Jameson’s wounds.

Dark steps back watching before turning to the worried household members. “What brought this on?” He asks meaning the fight.

Guilty looks cross between the faces. “We... we couldn’t agree on a...” Chase has tot stop and wipe his eyes. “It was stupid and we couldn’t... now look at him. Look at Jay.” He weeps scared to lose the youngest member of the family.

Eyes look away from the couch. 

“He vill live.” Henrik calls from the couch. He and Wilford are covered in blood and dirt but there is relief in Henrik’s eyes. “It is all superficial as Vilford had guessed.” Henrik says wiping off what blood hasn’t dried to him.

Dark looks a the group. “Perhaps you should take a look at what you’ve almost lost and rethink how you should handle your disagreements.” His tone is neutral. He knows they are hurting, if the roles had been reversed he would be besides himself. “Wilford I will assume you are staying.” He can see Wilford will not leave his best friend in such as state much less with the noise they were greeted with. 

“I’m staying.” Wilford says. Whether the Septic family wants to accept it or not Wilford will not leave the house until he knows Jameson is well again. 

“You are good student, Vilford. I vill need you.” Henrik says handing Wilford a clean towel. “Vash off in zhe bazhroom. I vill get you fresh clozhes.” Henrik adds nodding to Wilford.

“Thank you.” Wilford says leaving the room with one last look to Jameson. 

Dark nods his head. “I’ll have someone over in a few hours to change out the door.” And with that Dark leaves. Past this point it is a private family matter. Pausing a moment in the ruined door way. “I do apologize for losing my temper.” 

Anti and Marvin simply stare at the door then to Dark’s form as he disappears into the darkness. They can’t believe that he considered ruining their door was a slight temper out burst.

“He broke our fucking door.” Anti says in disbelief.

“I’d hate to see him completely enraged.” Marvin remarks walking over to the door and attempts to close it. At the slightest touch it falls completely off the hinges. 

“He saved Jameson when we were clueless. I think a door is the least of our worries.” Chase says keeping watch over Jameson. His little brother, and he failed him. “We’re grown men, how did we let this happen?”

“He said he was going to cinema.” Henrik responds changing a few bandages.

“He obviously lied.”

“We didn’t even notice a car hadn’t been turned on.” Eyes shift from one face to another then to the ground. “How did we miss this?” 

Wilford stands in the arch way to the living room leaning against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest with the towel wrapped around his waist. “Is something wrong with Sean?” He asks watching everyone look to him.

“What?”

“Sean--Jack, however you refer to him as, is there anything wrong with him right now? As alter personalities born from the same person. His moods affect you.” Wilford tells them.

“His uncle recently passed in a car accident.”

“That’s why he’s in Ireland right now.”

Wilford nods his head. “His grief can affect you all in different ways. You have to be aware of when you are acting out and take a moment, like Jay does, and breath. 

Chase looks at the others. “I’ve noticed it, but I ignored it. I didn’t understand what was happening because I didn’t want to deal with it.” 

“I never put two and two together.” A few agree with Marvin. Wilford nods his head. 

“Whether you believe it or not, we talk in our house. We check in on Mark when we begin to feel an over abundance of emotions.” Wilford admits earning shocked expressions around the room. 

“Even Dark?” Anti asks unable to wrap his head around the idea that Dark talks about his feelings. 

“Dark is the one to put it together. We do not get along everyday, but we do not allow our differences and disagreements to tear us apart.” If he didn’t look so dead serious and certain about his words everyone would assume he was joking. “Start with talking. Work on a plan to keep this from happening again. Never allow this to happen again.” Wilford suggests glancing over at Jameson asleep on the couch. 

Henrik had administered a sedative to keep him rested and still. Henrik nods. “You are right, Vilford. Zhank you for your input. Ve obviously needed it. However, please do get dressed.” Henrik asks noticing the towel around Wilford’s waist is about to fall.

Nodding Wilford turns away from them. The towel seemed to know the exact moment to give up the struggle and falls giving everyone a lovely view of his naked backside. He continues back to the bathroom to dress.

“He’s not wrong.” Marvin says wishing he could wash his eyeballs.

“No, when Jameson is better we should talk as a group. We cannot lose him because we are not willing to talk about our emotions.” Chase says committed to ensuring the arguing is cut down. 

Heads nod. For the remained of the night the egos sit around Jameson in the living room and talk to each other with some prompting from Wilford. Using the computer Chase calls Sean, bringing him into the discussion as their creator. By the end everyone is exhausted and ready for a long sleep. 

When the morning comes Wilford returns home to change his clothing and eat while Chase takes his place as Henrik’s assistant. As a whole everyone agrees to take the day to focus solely on helping Jameson get better. Everyone feels the guilt of driving their brother into the arms of a monster to be slaughtered. 

Sean had been mortified at the news of the attack Jameson lived through and the information provided by Wilford. He apologized over and over again, crying at the sight of Jameson laying prone on the couch, each could feel it in that moment. The power of Sean’s emotions washed over them, heightening their own sadness. 

They understand. They know exactly what Wilford had been talking about now that they are aware of it. They promise Sean to take good care of Jameson and to talk more when he’s back home. 

When Jameson finally wakes up he’s greeted with thankful smiles and happy tears. Everyone has to fight hugging Jameson tightly and instead sees to his comfort. To lose one would be devastating, to lose that one because of personal negligence and ignorance is a tragedy. 

Now they have the tools to keep from losing themselves and each other.

He doesn't respond for the longest time, only listening. Walking. Normally he'd say that walking helps him think, but he doubts that's the case at that moment. He has no idea how much the effort he's putting into not letting the emotions show on his face is working, trying not to wince at certain things his brother says like it's nothing, but his face feels slack; anger and anguish and loss are building in him like storms, separately and then crossing paths. He lets the silence embrace them both after his brother's question, reaching up to wipe away a tear. Nonchalant. A reasonably calm front for the storm underneath that rivals his nickname.

There's a stillness as he gathers his thoughts, looking out at the sand but seeing nothing. "Rem... had a duty." He remembers. Nai reaching for her. The expression on her face when she closed the escape pod on the two of them. Screaming for her. He remembers. It wasn't betrayal that he felt, just aching emptiness. Absence. The first thing torn away from him. The fire, the explosion, the knowledge that they would never see her again--

Maybe, maybe, he can understand some of the anger, even if he didn't feel it himself. Still doesn't. Betrayal hadn't come until he heard his brother laughing, heard the words, realized what he'd done. "She... made sure we'd be safe. And saved as many lives as she could." Is he desperately trying to justify the decision? It sounds like it even to his own ears, but he doesn't... he doesn't think so. He's not trying to, he doesn't mean it that way. It's a reason. Rem didn't-- She tried to save everyone. Not one or the other, not humans over them; she tried to save everyone! And she... lost herself. She didn't fully succeed, but she didn't altogether fail either.

Nai, laughing. Fire. Pride. Vash recalls it much too easily, as it's haunted him since. Obviously, humanity had survived and tried to make a life for themselves in the harsh environment. He'd been there at the edges of it. He'd seen... what he'd seen... Swallowing, he still tries to express himself calmly. Patiently. "I... understand your anger at the people responsible for... For what they did to Tesla." The name makes his voice shake. He hasn't talked about her. He never talked about her. Maybe that's been a mistake. "Hatred, even. I can understand that, wanting justice for what's been done but-- You've hurt innocent people, Nai." That wasn't his name anymore. He knew that, knew it, unable to help his words or how they were breaking off from being carefully, calmly neutral. "You removed their ability to choose. Before they even understood they had a choice. Children." He doesn't want to mention names. He won't. He only knows so many, at a loss for how many others he will never learn.

He suspects that none of that will be considered noteworthy. That the humans killed, affected, tormented, will hardly be considered at all; and there is a point he knows waits on the tip of his brother's tongue about their sisters having no choice. He knows, he knows, and that isn't right either-- The thing he really doesn't talk about, has no desire to think overly much on, escapes his mouth like it's been trying to writhe away from his teeth the entire time. "You took away my choice, Nai." All of them. Everything.

It's a glance. Quick as a shot, looking to his brother and then back to the sand. "S-so. The anger is mutual, I guess."

He hears the question even if Vash doesn't give voice to the entirety of it. He could answer. He could. But Rem is a knot in his brain he's spent almost two centuries avoiding, unwilling to untangle it and study it.

Unwilling to let her cut him through a second time.

Because he had. He does. But she'd lied to them, she'd made promises and then broke them–I'll always protect you, but when they needed her most humanity had mattered more. Had they ever been enough for her? He hates her for that, hates her for leaving them because he knows Vash won't, so he'll do it for both of them.

"She was supposed to come with us." It's simple, honest. He wonders if Vash even remembers that Knives had held out his hand to her, had asked her to come with them. (He'd known she'd refuse, had resigned himself to the betrayal but it had still hurt.) Has Vash rewritten his own memory, convinced himself that Knives had killed her without even a second thought? "It was supposed to be the three of us, and the plant ship. We were going to terraform this planet into something better, something just for us and Rem where you'd be safe and no one would cut you into pieces and leave you floating in jars."

Like Tesla, he doesn't say.

"But she ruined that plan and then she died so I had to work with what I had. And you interfered at every turn, and what did that get you? Scars and scars and scars." He tilts his head slightly to the side. He wonders if Vash had ever even questioned Knives' motives, ever bothered to wonder. Had he made himself enough of a villain that Vash had just accepted it and never looked deeper?

"I know you do. You're quite loud about those opinions." Not just verbally; even in that shared space between plants, his twin has always been so loud. Too bright, even. He leads Vash down the alleys until they dump them out into the edge of town. He stops at the fringes of the borders, crossing his arms as he stares out at the sand.

He's never had a chance before, to explain. To make Vash understand; Julai doesn't count. They'd been fighting and Vash had refused to even let his words penetrate, to accept that maybe Knives had something other than sheer malice behind his actions. But it means he has to drag thoughts and motivations and feelings out into the light of day that he's never truly put words to.

You matter to me, Vash says like he means it.

"I hurt everyone you cared about so they'd leave you," Knives admits, still staring out into the desert sands. "To make you stop. Caring about people. Or at least stop letting them get close enough to hurt you." If he'd built his walls high enough that no one could ever get past them again, then there'd never be another Rem. Never be someone who can devastate him like that again when they inevitably died the way humans do. If Knives couldn't protect his body, he'd at least protect his stupid, soft heart.

Aries: Kekkai Sensen - 12 Episodes (2nd season of same length coming out Oct 2017)

Taurus: Mushishi - 46 Episodes (2 seasons)

"Mushi": the most basic forms of life in the world. They exist without any goals or purposes aside from simply "being." They are beyond the shackles of the words "good" and "evil." Mushi can exist in countless forms and are capable of mimicking things from the natural world such as plants, diseases, and even phenomena like rainbows. This is, however, just a vague definition of these entities that inhabit the vibrant world of Mushishi, as to even call them a form of life would be an oversimplification. Detailed information on Mushi is scarce because the majority of humans are unaware of their existence. So what are Mushi and why do they exist? This is the question that a "Mushishi," Ginko, ponders constantly. Mushishi are those who research Mushi in hopes of understanding their place in the world's hierarchy of life. Ginko chases rumors of occurrences that could be tied to Mushi, all for the sake of finding an answer. It could, after all, lead to the meaning of life itself.

Lilli is Lichtenstein, and Ludwig/Germany is referred to as Prussia’s brother. And...I think that’s it! This was really fun to make, and I’m glad I could write something for this pairing! 

Summary: Vash, as is his duty as the guard of the Holy Prisons, is walking the infamous soul eater demon down the halls to be judged by the Holy Supreme Court of Heaven.    Vash gripped his sword tighter, tensing his wings against his back and snarling at the demon before him. “I strongly advise you to be silent, you fallen mother-”

“Alright, alright, I get it,” the albino rolled his eyes, red slits dancing with fire and the smell of burnt flesh following the prisoner as he was rushed along the passageway to the Supreme Heavenly Court. “You don’t like me, you don’t have to be so rude about it, yeesh.”

“Yes, I don’t ‘like’ you,” the guardian spat, sword a hair from being drawn and slaughtering the chained prisoner, “You killed my Protected. You should be lucky I don’t kill you where you stand, demon bastard.” With a flick of his fingers, the demon was thrown further down the hallway by the drones in front of him, his blond hair shining the stale light from the ceiling onto the mindless bodies that waited for their next order. Although a dark voice whispered to kill the murderer in front of him, his Inner Light, the damned voice in his head that kept his behavior in strict ordinance with Holy Order, lit a path that prevented him from snapping his neck in the most blessed halls of Heaven. Afterall, killing your enemies was demon behavior.

The insolent bastard, with his jagged, lone pair of wings and his ivory claws, started to tap out a tune as the drones become more rough with him, reacting to the slow-burning aura emanating from his halo and perceiving that as orders to shove and trip the unnatural entity. Vash didn’t stop them.

“You know where we’re going?” the demon asked, bleached tail swishing through the air, somehow escaping the normal mutilation that happened in confession rooms. Shackles rattling on his wrists, he leaned closer to the former guardian angel and said, “Am I going to the execution area already?”

“I suppose it’s fitting no one told you,” Vash snorted, dagger dangling from his wrist and green eyes glistening with the opportunity to tear the demon apart, if just with words. There were times before when his Inner Light would have clamped his jaw shut and order him to remain neutral like all guardians, but now that his title had been stripped away and he had been demoted to a simple prison guard, it was mostly silent to the loathing that had churned in him. With a mute conscience, he said, “You’re going to the Supreme Heavenly Court, where they’ll hold a mock trial and sentence you to any number of grisly deaths for eating blessed souls. Perhaps a gladiator battle,” Vash proposed, watching the pale demon’s face for any signs of guilt or horror, “Maybe you’ll finally be able to eat a demon’s lifesource. I hear they kept Ivan the Grim alive for the express purpose of watching him tear demons apart. If you get lucky, he might go easy on you.”

“No way that’s real,” the demon laughed, but there was something fearful in his eyes, Vash noted with a malicious glee. “Angels don’t just, just KILL people. You’re supposed to be the goodie two shoes of the Realms, like all peaceful and shit.”

“Not to demons like you,” Vash said, and prodded him further to his doom.

“You’re trying to make me scared so I’ll confess to the court,” he proclaimed, blood eyes dashing to the side and hands fidgeting slightly with his white prisoner’s garb.   

“Interesting theory. Too bad they already have all the evidence they need, snow bastard.”

“First of all, I’m not a snow demon, and second, how the fuck do you know that?”

“Because I have ears and don’t live under a rock in the most gossiping city this side of Saint Paul. Also,” the blond hissed, pressing his sword into the demons back until it drew blood, smiling grimly at the yelp the demon gave, “I have a special interest in your case.”

The demon whipped around, for the first sign showing flares of aggression and spitting, “What the fuck is your fucking-”

“Language,” Vash warned, and the drones besides him crushed the albino’s shoulders, eyes glowing in sync with the Holy Orbs on the walls. “No offensive language is permitted in the Heavenly Court Building.” The Inner Light moved his mouth to speak, and ever the faithful follower, he added, “Any unholy acts, orders, or speech that is not sanctified by the Court is prohibited. Please remain orderly and reasonable in all manners while in the presence of the Holy-”

“Oh save it, Vash.” A flick of satisfaction appeared on the pale demon’s face as Vash tried to keep his own face blank at the revelation that he knew his name, and knowing that he was failing when the demon laughed. “Yeah, I know your name, Vash.”

The second utterance shook his Inner Light as the name commanded him like the judges or the higher angels. Such power came with names, something whispered, we must get rid of him. Of course, we can’t get rid of him, his Inner Light bounced back. He’s a prisoner, he must face justice. But after. No, never. Yes, let us consume the demon who ate our Protected, strike him down in vengeance!

He gritted his teeth, shoving the seething hostility below the Inner Light and motioning the drones ahead of him as he collected himself.

“Don’t you want to know why I know your name?” the demon teased, now back in a position of power with guard’s name in his grasps. “It has to do with your beloved Protected-”

“Don’t you dare speak of Lili!” Vash screamed, sword fully drawn and aimed at the grinning demon's throat, and even though the guardian had the prisoner pressed against the wall, the drones fell back. “It’s your fault she’s dead,” the dark said, green eyes swirling with red, his six wings stretched out their full length, “And I should skin you alive for taking away my purpose!”

“Wow,” the demon blinked. “She wasn’t kidding when she said you were violent.” He caught his head to the side, acting in control despite being centimeters from death. “She mentioned you when she cried out for help, you know. She said, ‘Vash, why won’t you save me!’” He mimicked her high voice, eyes filled with mockery and abandon, wanting one last strike at this robotic creature before his trial, before his wings were mutilated and his body dent out to be devoured by Heaven’s pet monsters. The rumors were true, and like fuck he was going to step foot in that courtroom.

“You bastard!” Vash howled, a moment away from slicing the waiting demon’s throat before the Holy Orbs erupted in light and shoved him backward, forcing him away from the startled prisoner and onto the floor.

“No offensive language is permitted in the Heavenly Court Building,” the drones repeated, staring at the angel with empty eyes and spread their arms in front of the demon as if to protect him. “This is a prisoner. He is not to be harmed until his trial. This is a prisoner. He is not to be harmed before his trial. This is a-”

“I understand, and I apologize for my behavior in the holy building,” his Inner Light responded, shoving the corrupted energy back to its abode and bowing to the holy minds ingrained into the walls. Gritting his teeth, he said robotically, “I accept my punishment, and I accept the Holy One’s will forevermore.”  

The drones nodded, their human-like bodies glowing gold, and picked the demon up again. They were back to being the mindless beings they were before, waiting for orders as he gave a sigh of relief. Back in control, really in control, that dark spirit sealed away from his mind, his Inner Light said, “Demon, proceed. Please refrain from that conduct again. Attempted suicide is not sanctioned by the Holy Order, and you must wait for your trial before receiving an agreed death.”

“Oh Lucifer,” the demon breathed, eyes wide and taking a step back to the wall, “They really control you. Every single one of you. I saw you, I really saw you, I swear!” The demon narrowed his eyes at the blank angel in front of him. “But you’re just a robot, huh. The only thing you can really think about is Lilli.”

He clenched his fists, gritting his teeth and feeling the hideous emotions rise over him again, begging him to defend his Protected, his sweet baby sister he guarded with his life, to murder her killer and forget about whatever redemption or punishment the trial might give him. ‘What about Lili?’ it whispered.

“Refrain from attempting to provoke the guards,” Vash spoke, Inner Light glowing in sync to the lights on the walls, clenching his heart and burying those traitorous thoughts under the sheet of the Holy Order. “Lilli Zwingli is a Former-Protected, and she has the utmost respect and caused great sorrow to the Holy Order of Angels,” Vash stated, eyes as blank as the drones that now pushed the demons further down the hall.

The demon seemed to be deeply shook, tail limp and eyes locked on the humming walls and the presence of the Holy Order all around the group. Vash glossed over this, following his light guided path, stopping in front of the doors of the Supreme Courtroom. With a push on the door and a respectful step back, he looked his sister’s murderer in his red slitted eyes, and smiled, letting an inkling of satisfaction come from the heartless being’s death.

With one glance into the tense, cloudy room for the worst offenders, the soul eaters, the cannibals, the traitors, the demons, he gave one last response to the brother of the High Judge, the infamous Gilbert Beilschmidt, and not even his Inner Light could drown out hate dripped, sanctioned words.

“May you face your trial with courage,” he repeated for the millionth time, the final goodbye to the lost prisoners of the Angels, “and may you find redemption.”
