I even miss the cultural jokes that existed in the early Pokemon anime.
Now they replace that culture with.....
Nothing.
More pokemon I guess.
kinda miss when anime was ,like... REALLY unapologetically Japanese...
#anime#i dont know...#something felt different when Takeshi Shudo wasnt given creative control anymore#i miss the original concept of the world being high tech but scrappy#and a lot of bon dances#festivals#and untranslatable puns#the new stuff is just squeaky clean#although i wish zetsubou sensei took off more#that anime is so unapologetically japanese and it wont slow down or wait for you

// Minthara's "it was a beautiful webbing" pun is translated in spanish as "it was a beautiful wedding [...] the spouses [...] had hundreds of eyes on them"

i absolutely do not claim to understand japanese and this is like not a shock because i have made 0 formal effort to learn it ever but a really really annoying thing is that after like 14 years of cultural osmosis i know enough things about japanese that watching the subtitled version rather than the dubbed version of something actually does give me more information and sometimes lets me identify if the subtitles are inaccurate
#most of it is stuff to do w honorifics#because thats something thats considered like quote unquote untranslatable and so often left out of subtitles#but is still like a concept that can be understood and also is often used to convey information about characters relationships to each othe#but also like for example power's cat is named nyako#the subtitles translate it as meowy which works fine#but nyako is a pun combining nyan which is the sound cats make in japanese and neko which is the word for japanese#¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I actually wrote something about sifloop but I don't know where to share it anymore...
#it's not in english and the usual platform I use is getting progressively STUPID#translating is an option but half the charm will disappear because of untranslatable puns#and i made such a pun that is so funny if you understand original phrase#a very self-deprecating and projecting one too#but the rest of the work is mostly tender and tragic#and i no longer can post it#wthhhhhh#this is devastating im out#fifty musings

Hi, do you know why Dr Ulatane from the XY card game manga was named "Hiroshi" ? Is it a pun or something like that ?
yes! it's a pun on 博士 (hakase, aka doctor, the job title that's translated as "professor" in english versions of pokémon) because 博 can also be read "hiro" and 士 can also be read "shi." hence, hiroshi!
(fun fact, this pun is also present in yakuza kiwami with one of the kids from the mesuking storyline, except there's really no way to get that there's even a pun in the english version unless you're knowledgeable about japanese to begin with)
#la réponse d#not blaming the kiwami translators at all i'm sure they were aware of the pun but it's basically untranslatable anyway so#as with other untranslatable things they just ignored it completely which is fair

#OP's opponent has made the classic blunder of putting all their pieces on an unpurchased square #if OP has any sheep or lumber they can build a hotel on d5 and black'll be bankrupt within three turns #but yeah if they don't have sheep or lumber then the sicilian defense is probably their best bet #chess tags by @sufficientlylargen (on an earlier version of this post)
Hey guys, my opponent just fused their entire side of the board into a gestalt entity, which is currently dissecting and calcifying my pieces such that they fit into its twisted vision of an eternal, perfect state of the universe. What's the best counter in this situation?
#Chess#*chuckling*#Just as I was reading this post the first time someone posted a pun about chess in my autism WhatsApp group#(pun in French so sadly untranslatable)#OP have you tried white vinegar I heard it's good against calcification
