do u have any specific ideas on how the membrane like..knows to clone? is it instinct or was it told?
YES I have quite a bit of an idea actually. It's a bit of both, i'd say! (thank you so much for asking me oc lore questions btwwwww <3)
Base black is a really weird and unique substance. In living things it acts as the sortof semicorporeal "spirit glue" that attaches your incorporeal soul to your corporeal body. It's ability to attach to ever-changing matter like that is why it's used in manufacturing/cloning. Now, as a human, your memories are stored in some kinda physical way in your brain. Your soul will also carry a sortof 'spiritual' memory of yourself (a la ghosts or something) AND, your base black has it's own kind of memory. hard to describe but I guess but it's like. a spiritual memory of being physical. It remembers EVERY version of yourself you have ever been. THIS form of memory is critical for cloning.
By feeding the membrane a live sample from a human (blood) it will attach to that living thing and try to "remember" what (and who!) it is/was. This is kinda the instinct part. Base black likes to be attached to things that are alive, or else it will decay. it WILL attach to that sample. so you can kinda "tell" it to clone by using that "instinct"... additionally base black has a certain "saturation" i guess? a human body has however much base black it needs for it's size. so when you submit a little blood sample to a full-size membrane, it wants moooooore it needs more Stuff. so, utilizing the process of it 'remembering' being the person the sample is from, you can kinda manipulate it to grow into something. (the machine i had designed before (Delphi model) has a larger than standard base black membrane size because it was made for making human faxes, which would often be full sized adults. machines made Just for cloning have much smaller membranes, since clones are made as babies)
base black manufacturing for non-living stuff works similarly, but you have to try and make the membrane remember being in the form of something that wasn't alive. you kinda have to train it? this means you can't use cloning machines for anything but cloning (unless you retrain it heavily), as they want to be made of people, and vice versa. they remember being in that form over n over...
But this leads me to something I've been wanting to talk about for a while: "unsolicited ejections" (called UEs). to make a new clone you need to purge the base black membrane of previous physical contaminants (reset it to nothing, essentially), but you don't need to completely purge the feeder reservoir. this is because once the membrane accepts the sample, becomes part of that thing, it'll want to be that thing even if you supply it with stuff that may have some other DNA contaminant. (this is actually why getting possessed can be soooo dangerous. it'll Change You. but that's a whole other long textpost). now. this means sometimes even though you don't "tell" the membrane to make a clone, it may still try sooo hard. even if it has no sample, it just remembers Making. UEs almost never result in actual living clones...more so just contaminated meat mess. BUT. they can! this is actually why there's so many Maverick clones. the Delphi-4 Human Facsimile Machine has been contaminated with "Maverick" for decades. and no one can figure out how to fix it. Foster is a UE. Maverick (Delphine) is one, kinda. isn't it amazing that even with cloning you can have accident children...
but also im unsure if i've ever mentioned: this cloning process does not work every time. it actually fails most of the time! making something with the right shape and DNA isn't too hard, but the getting it alive (conscious, human) part is tricky (this is why UEs don't tend to result in proper clones). cloning something usually involves soliciting the machine to try over and over and over and over until you get something conscious. but because this cloning process involves moving physical matter into the right shape as opposed to growing it in a wholly natural manner, you can basically recycle the old stuff until it becomes alive stuff lol.

5G NTN: Transforming the Connectivity Landscape
What is NTN?
Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) is a terminal-satellite direct communication technology based on the new radio (NR) interface technology developed by 3GPP in R17. As a supplement to the terrestrial cellular network, NTN enables space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) beyond ground-based infrastructure in bandwidth, latency, reliability, etc. It provides seamless network services to global users by providing larger coverage and resilience, satisfying the future network requirements on all-time, all-domain, and all-space communications and interconnected networking.
Tumblr media
Why 5G NTN is Essential?
A significant portion of land and marine areas, around 80% and 95% respectively, lack coverage from terrestrial cellular networks. To ensure ubiquitous mobile network access, 5G networks must extend beyond these limitations. However, building and maintaining 5G terrestrial networks in remote locations like mountains, deserts, and oceans are daunting challenges. 5G NTN offers a solution by using Phased Array Antennas, mmWave technology, Adaptive beamforming..etc, to help bridging the digital divide and connecting the unconnected.
Advantages
· Expanded Coverage and Connectivity 5G NTN overcomes limitations faced by traditional networks, providing high-speed internet access to remote regions, rural areas, and disaster-stricken zones. Satellite-based networks cover vast expanses of land, while drones and High-Altitude Platforms (HAPs) offer temporary or on-demand coverage during emergencies or events. · Enabling IoT and Smart Cities 5G NTN unlocks the potential for IoT deployment and smart city development. It facilitates real-time connectivity among devices and sensors, leading to improved automation, enhanced public services, and optimized resource management. Applications range from smart grids to connected healthcare and environmental monitoring. · · · · Redundancy By offering an alternative communication channel, 5G NTN ensures connectivity even if the terrestrial network is affected or destroyed. Satellite or aerial platforms serve as backup options, guaranteeing uninterrupted service.
Challenges
While 5G NTN holds immense promise, it also presents challenges. Coordinating between terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, managing handovers, and ensuring seamless connectivity across platforms require robust infrastructure and efficient network management systems. Regulatory frameworks, spectrum allocation, and international cooperation are crucial for harnessing the full potential of 5G NTN.
Moreover, the main difficulties of NTN networks are the high latency (up to 120 ms for GSO satellites) and the deep fade (up to 170 dB) due to the orbital altitude of the satellites, as well as the large doppler (tens of kHz) introduced by the high-speed movement of low-orbit satellites. For the deep fade, the transmission and reception capabilities are usually improved by increasing the size of the antenna and panel on the satellite side to ensure that the unmodified smartphones can also carry out satellite communication normally; as for delay and Doppler, 3GPP has formulated a series of solutions in the protocol, so that terminals and base stations can confirm the delay and Doppler changes through satellite ephemeris information, and complete compensation at the transmitter to ensure the normal progress of communication.
Future Enhancements
3GPP R18 for NR introduces enhancements to support NTN connectivity, including: · Expansion of NR (FDD mode) NTN into frequency bands exceeding 10 GHz, such as the Ka-band, to accommodate VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) devices. VSAT terminals possess higher antenna gain and transmit power, making them suitable for installation on airborne, maritime, or land-based vehicles to provide broadband data services. These frequency bands will not be accessible for handheld user equipment (UE) and IoT devices due to the significant path loss experienced at higher frequencies. · Enhancement of coverage for low-data rate and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services through commercial smartphones in NTN scenarios. VoIP is specifically applicable to LEO satellites due to the latency associated with longer propagation distances, while low-data rate services can be offered by all satellite types (LEO, MEO, GEO) through sufficient repetitions of transmissions. · Improvement of UE mobility within NTN earth-fixed and earthmoving cells, as well as mobility between NTN and terrestrial networks, to ensure service continuity. This will be achieved through enhanced procedures for measurements, cell re-selection, and handover. Tracking areas will remain earth-fixed, similar to the specifications in R17. · Network verification of UE location reports to fulfill regulatory requirements regarding accuracy, latency, reliability, and other factors. This verification is necessary for various purposes, including emergency calls, lawful intercept, public warnings, and charging/billing processes.

One last post before I retire for today, and it's about the language!
So I've been thinking of how to use and mark verbs in a sentance. Like yes, "to water the plants with water" is great, but sometimes there will be words and situations where nouns won't always work as verbs, so how do I turn a noun INTO a verb? How do I turn water into watering?
Simple: add a suffix (the -ing)
But in this case my brain is heavily suggesting I use (-r) as the suffix for verbs. No reason. It's just there. Oh well.
So if we take a word, like eg. the name Loki, and we say it means "entangler", then if we add an (-r) it becomes lokir "to entangle"! Doubt this is how norse worked or anything ever worked but it's simple so we'll keep it for now
(realisticly if we were to dirctely translate "Loki" into this language, it would mean "passive-place-knowledge-many" which sounds like a library! Or libraries (technically because the plural (-ī) is applying to the whole word)! Does that make Loki a god of libraries in this language? Many people talk of him being a fire god (incorrectly), but no one talks of him being a knowledge god)
So if we take the word (lkeu) "eye" and we say (lkeur) that would mean "see"
And if we say (lkeur u) "see self" then that could be a form of greeting, giving us a reasonable "hello"
And if we say (ur), then that's "self" as an action, so the reasonable conclusion is that (ur) means TO BE, giving us a possible "is, was, will be, be, being, been"!!
But what if there is a Sumerian city called Ur? How will we know that it's a city? Do we add (i-) "this specific thing"? No! We add (-o), a suffix noting a place! So (Ur) becomes (Uro)!
This (-r) suffix also gives an answer to (p) "to give/receive" in that it seems exclusively a verb-word, but that means the (-r) annotating it as a verb would be useless BUT that's not the case because now (p) can mean the verb as a noun, so "give/receive" can become "gift/receipt, a thing that is given/received" (but (p) cannot stand on it's own because it's a plosive, so we add (-a) to make it (pa)). And this is all great because for a minute I was worried about making (p) a form of "have" and insinuating possession, which is already taken by (m') which itself is taken from Toki Pona's liberal use of "mi", which I personally think is genius
This also brings into question (b) as it was originally meant to mean "hit" before expanding on it and giving an additional meaning of "a collision", so now (ba (remember plosive))="collision" and (br)="hit", and (a'br) can mean "violent" and (bre) can mean "thing you use to hit things with"
And (-r) is not just a suffix, but (r) can also mean "to act/do"
(u d'pr ō) "I don't give time / I don't recieve time" which can be writen as a moral of a story as "I don't get time, I don't give time" or "I don't get time, you don't get time"(u d'pr ō, ue d'pr ō), which means we already have reasoning and thought and a basis for philosophy!!!
As usual, thoughts are welcome in the comments, reblogs or dms

A jealous scenario with Kyo. Sen is just so cute & precious that you can’t help but baby him. The pillars joke to Kyo “Ooo... you got competition!” 😂 thank you keep it up
Oooh this was cute, bby. Hope you like it! 😌❤️‍🔥
Kyōjurō x F!S/O: Competition (Fluff, SFW Scenario)
Note: This will be set during the Pillar Training Arc, where Kyō will be alive and well enough to take part in it.
***
Days off were extremely rare for the lower ranking slayers attending the Hashira training camps, and it was even rarer for all the Hashira whom were conducting all the training. And when they did all have mercy on their subordinates, they all gathered together to train with each other.
After all, they were all humble enough to realize that their own techniques still needed to be honed. And what better way to get critique than to be surrounded by other people who were better in the things that they were bad at?
So, that was how the nine Hashira found themselves gathered together at the Rengoku estate; all taking a breather after getting done with their own sparring sessions.
Shinobu, Muichiro, Gyōmei, and Mitsuri were casually sitting on the engawa to recuperate in the shade, while the rest— Sanemi, Giyuu, Uzui, and Kyōjurō— all laid on the ground. They were all so breathless, and all so tired, but still held smiles on their faces.
Save for Giyuu, as usual. But there was a lighter aura that surrounded him, which had the others making an effort to include them within their fold.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, (Y/n) and Senjurō were busy trying to finish up plating all of the snacks that they had prepared for the afternoon.
“So how does it feel to be a married man, Rengoku?” Uzui asked with a teasing grin, which Kyōjurō easily returned with an enthusiastic one.
“It’s great! Better than I could have ever imagined! And my wife’s the best; just last night she made my favorite!” The blond practically bellowed, before tacking it off with a boisterous laugh that had the other men around him wincing a little at how loud he was.
However, the moment that the shoji slid open to reveal both (Y/n) and Senjurō, all the men’s eyes turned towards them both. Most looking at the snacks they had, and Kyōjurō looking right at his wife for the sole reason of admiring her beauty.
He even had to muffle a contented and smitten sigh; which must have failed, since he caught Uzui and Sanemi scoffing at his lovestruck reaction.
“I can see why you’re so smitten with her,” Sanemi began gruffly, which Uzui took as his cue to add on to the building fire that was guaranteed to mess with the Flame Hashira.
“But you might have some competition right there; not as her husband, but the cutest thing to her.”
Kyōjurō’s eyebrows furrowed at the Sound Hashira’s words, eyes briefly darting over to him and seeing him subtly nod his head back towards (Y/n).
So, he turned his attention to her and had to bite down on his tongue to keep himself from making a horrified expression. Since she and Senjurō were giving the other Hashira their snacks, and she had reached over to cup Senjurō’s cheek before pinching it slightly.
And, much to his jealousy, she even said, “You’re the cutest, Senjurō. Such a sweet boy.”
Those particular lines had Sanemi and Uzui internally laughing, especially when they saw the ill-concealed jealousy on the blond’s face.
“You might be her husband, but you’re not cute to her. A travesty, really.” Uzui stretched the teasing out, even making a show of shaking his head right at Kyōjurō.
“No. I’m the cutest to my wife.” The blond muttered under his breath; his expression going from bothered to pouting, which just looked plain out childish on him.
Especially since he was only feeding right into Sanemi’s and Uzui’s teasing. All the while, Giyuu was only focused on the tray of food and drinks that Senjurō was bringing over to them.
“Thank you, Senjurō, but where’s (Y/n) going?” Kyōjurō asked— clearly confused by his wife going back into the house. “Is there anything she needs help with?”
“Nee-san just had to get some more sugar for our tea, and she said that you’re all welcome to join us on the engawa, ani-ue.” The younger Rengoku chirped, looking almost too adorable.
And it made the jealousy inside Kyōjurō flare up even more; since he wanted to be the only one that his wife loved the most— no matter if it was so childish of him.
Still, he wanted to save face in front of all the other Hashira; so he stayed put where he was and thanked Senjurō for the snacks and tea. All the while, he kept glancing up to sneak peeks over at his wife and his younger brother joking around and being so cute together.
So, the jealousy within him turned up even more— up to a palpable amount that even Giyuu was interested in how Uzui’s and Sanemi’s goading from earlier would pan out.
“Looks like you have some competition, Rengoku,” Sanemi stated with a slight smile; merely expecting the other Hashira to brush his teasing remark off.
Nobody expected Kyōjurō to practically shove his half-eaten rice ball at Uzui, before getting up and marching towards his wife.
“Oh, Kyō, would you like to join us?” (Y/n) asked with that breathtaking smile of hers, making the Flame Hashira momentarily dumbstruck. Before he plopped himself down next to her and wrapped his arms around her waist.
Of course it made (Y/n)’s face burn red with embarrassment— as she was surrounded by all the high ranking members of the Slayer Corps; and there was her husband, acting so adorably possessive.
Especially when he bit down on her clothed shoulder, before mouthing, “Mine.”
“I... uh... yes, Kyō. I’m yours.”
“And I’m the cutest.” The blond huffed under his breath, which had (Y/n) holding back a flustered and confused giggle. Still, she raised her free hand up and used it to cup her husband’s cheek.
“Yes, Kyō. You’re the cutest.”
“You promise?”
“I promise. Now, what brought this on?”
“Nothing. I just want to be the cutest for you, because you’re the cutest for me.” That statement alone was enough to make (Y/n) want to melt. Thankfully, that wasn’t physically possible; especially when Kyōjurō nipped at her shoulder once more. “Mine.”

Accents and Syllables in Spanish
Or I’m so mad about this that I wrote an explanation of basic Spanish grammar:
First, all letters in Spanish are consistent in their sound, some consonants vary in how they’re pronounced but there are rules to this. Spanish has five vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and their sounds don’t change. I’m not going to explain the pronunciation of all letters here, so I’ll work on the assumption you’re familiar with them. So if you know the way the letters sound and know the orthographic rules I’m about to explain, you should be able to know how to pronounce any word in Spanish by just reading it.
Words are divided by syllables, each syllable in Spanish feels very individual, like the beat of a drum. Vowels are the core of each syllable, a consonant sound must always come with a vowel, the priority goes to having a vowel after, but it can also follow a vowel when there is none after it.
Respeto: res-pe-to
Vena: ve-na
Estructura: es-truc-tu-ra
Now, each syllable has what we call the sílaba tónica, that is, the stressed syllable. Which syllable you stress can completely change the meaning of a word. For example, título, titulo, and tituló would mean title, [I] title, and [she/he] titled, respectively. Luckily there are rules to know which syllable to stress
When a word ends in a consonant that is not N or S the stressed syllable should be the last one. For example: ayer (a-YER), reloj (re-LOJ), valor (va-LOR).
When a word ends in a vowel, N or S the stressed syllable should be the penultimate one. For example: gato (GA-to), marco (MAR-co), polen (PO-len).
Accent marks (á, é, í, ó, ú), signal the stressed syllable whenever it doesn’t follow the previous rules. This would of course mean that all words where the stressed syllable is any one before the penultima one would have an accent mark.
Café (ca-FE), corazón (co-ra-ZON)
Árbol (AR-bol), cráter (CRA-ter)
Sílaba (SI-la-ba), célula (CE-lu-la)
Hiatus and diphthongs
Ok, now that we covered the basics let’s move to something more tricky. Spanish vowels are divided into strong (a, e, o) and weak (i, u). Whenever two strong vowels are next to each other, each keeps to its own syllable, forming a hiatus. However, a weak syllable gets pulled in by the force of a strong vowel and becomes part of the same syllable; the same thing happens if two weak syllables are together, forming a diphthong.
Hiatus: toalla (to-A-lla), leer (le-ER), aéreo (a-E-re-o)
Diphthongs: reino (REI-no), hueso (UE-so), buitre (BUI-tre), camión (ca-MION)
The way to break a diphthong and make a hiatus with a weak vowel would be if the weak vowel is pronounced with enough strength to break into its own syllable, which would make said syllable the stressed one of that word. In this case, an accent mark is always written regardless of the usual accentuation rules.
Río (RI-o), ataúd (a-ta-UD), cafeína (ca-fe-I-na)
Acento diacrítico
That’s all on accents and pronunciation, but you may have noticed that some Spanish words have accent marks even when you wouldn’t need it to know how to read it out loud, mostly seen in monosyllabic words (which wouldn't need an accent mark in any case). Well this is what we call an acento diacrítico.
This accent mark is used to differentiate between words that are written the same but belong to different grammatical categories. For example:
Sí is an adverb meaning “yes”, while si is a conjunction meaning “if”.
Tú is a personal pronoun meaning “you”, while tu is a possessive determiner meaning “your”
I won’t make a full list, but you will notice that it’s usually the pronouns that get the accents mark. Él means him/it, but el means “the” (Él está enojado vs el carro es rojo). Compare ésta vs esta, mí vs mi etc.
Furthermore all interrogative adverbs have an accent mark: dónde, cuándo, cuánto, qué, quién, cuál, por qué.
And that’s pretty much the gist of it. Now you too can read any Spanish word you encounter!

Japanese vs. English Todoroki - A 301 Comparison
Finally, for the first time since this manga has begun - and it only took 300 chapters to get here - we get an entire chapter that is solely about the Todoroki family! As I read through the chapter and started to type down the Japanese text, I asked myself which scenes I should translate. And so here we are with me having translated every single line. With that, this is a long post. Long. You have been warned. So let’s get right into it:
The chapter starts out with a flashback to Endeavor speaking with Rei’s father to get his approval to marry Rei:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「次期No.1の呼び声高いエンデヴァー様からお声掛けいただけるとは夢にも思いませんでした!僥倖の極みにございます!!」
「次期 ; jiki 」-> next term
「No.1 ; nanbaa wan 」-> number one
「呼び声高い ; yobigoe takai 」-> being widely talked about as a prominent prospect (for)
「エンデヴァー様 ; endevaa sama 」-> Endeavor-Sama
「から ; kara 」-> from
「お声掛け ; okoegake 」-> greeting; approaching (someone)
「いただける ; itadakeru 」-> receive (potential form)
「とは ; to wa」-> adds emphasis to the prior word/phrase
「夢にも思いませんでした ; yume ni mo omoimasen deshita 」-> I never dreamed that; not in one’s wildest dreams
「僥倖 ; gyoukou 」-> good fortune
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「極み ; kiwami 」-> height; extremity
「に ; ni 」-> at
「ございます ; gozaimasu 」-> to be
= “I never dreamed that we would receive greetings from Endeavor-Sama, who is widely talked about as a prominent prospect for the next term’s Number One position. We are at the height of good fortune!!”
It’s kinda sad if the height of your good fortune is meeting Endeavor. I also wonder how he reached out to them? “Hi, I need a wife with an ice quirk, do you have one?” How did he even search them? Is there some kind of registry that tells you which family has which quirk?
Anyway, we then learn a little about Rei’s family:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「氷叢もかつては名家と呼ばれた由緒ある家柄にございます故―
トップヒーロー様の伴侶としましては充分に釣り合いがとれるものと。。。」
「氷叢 ; himura 」-> Himura
「も ; mo 」-> also
「かつて ; katsute 」-> once; before; formerly
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「名家 ; meika 」-> noble family; distinguished family
「と呼ばれた ; to yobareta 」-> was called
「由緒ある ; yuisho aru 」-> prestigious; with a long history
「家柄 ; iegara」-> social standing of a family; lineage
「に ; ni 」-> from
「ございます ; gozaimasu 」-> to be
「故 ; yue 」-> reason; cause; circumstances
「トップヒーロー様 ; toppu hiro sama 」-> Top Hero-Sama
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「伴侶 ; hanryo 」-> spouse
「としまして ; to shimashite 」-> to take as
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「充分に ; juubun ni 」-> sufficient; enough (the ni turns this word into an adverb)
「釣り合い ; tsuriai 」-> balance
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「とれる ; toreru 」-> to be attained (of balance)
「ものと ; mono to 」-> shall; to assume; understood as
= “The Himura family was also once called a noble family. It’s a lineage with a long history - so to take her as a top hero’s spouse shall be a sufficiently attained balance.”
Something I would like to note here is something that is difficult to properly translate, which is the politeness level. There are a lot of different politeness levels to show the different social ranks. We don’t know how Rei’s father normally speaks, but he probably talks politely here to show respect to a top hero, which also makes this seem more like a business deal rather than a familiar conversation with your future father-in-law.
Anyway, we then get a little bit of narration from Endeavor:
「氷のような女だった」
「氷 ; koori 」-> ice
「のような ; no you na 」-> similar to; like
「女 ; onna 」-> woman
「だった ; datta 」-> was
= “She was a woman like ice.”
Ah, the classic “this woman doesn’t immediately worship me so she has no feelings” attitude. Not that I can say that I’m surprised he’d say something like that. And look at her. She looks so unhappy! Why are there people reading this chapter and claiming that this wasn’t a forced marriage when she looks like that? She clearly didn’t truly want this herself. This is also confirmed in the next line:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「“個性婚”である事も承知の上で。。。。。。家の為に俺の妻になると言う。」
「個性婚 ; koseikon 」-> quirk marriage
「である ; de aru 」-> is; be
「事 ; de aru koto 」-> nominalizes the preceding phrase
「も ; mo 」-> also
「承知の上で ; shouchi no ue de 」-> being aware of; taking something into account
「家 ; ie 」-> family
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「為に ; tame ni」-> for the sake of
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「妻 ; tsuma 」-> wife
「になる ; ni naru 」-> to become
「と言う ; to iu」-> to say
= “She is also aware that this is a quirk marriage... she says she will become my wife for the sake of her family.”
De aru is a formal way used to express that someone is explaining something and makes it a neutral, official-sounding statement.
It’s not entirely clear to me how she knows that this is a quirk marriage, though. Did Endeavor just tell her? Did he tell her father? Does she just know?
It still leaves me baffled how some people read this sentence and came to the conclusion that it wasn’t a forced marriage just because she agreed to it. I’m actually kind of sensing a pattern here: first, we learn that Rei agreed to have more children, so people claimed she wanted to have all these kids with him. Now, she apparently wanted to marry him out of her own will. I cannot stress this enough, but please please understand that if you do something “for the sake of your family” or generally for the sake of someone else, it doesn’t mean you actually want it yourself. If you live your life basing your decisions on what makes the people around you happy, you will not be happy. It’s one thing to be selfless, but another to never live for your own sake.
The only reason Endeavor decided to have a wife, specifically Rei, was for his own selfish goals. And the only reason Rei agreed, despite knowing she was being heavily objectified and reduced to her quirk here, was to please her family. However, this in no way indicates what her true feelings are.

「。。。花が好きか」
「花 ; hana 」-> flowers
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「好き ; suki 」-> to like
「か ; ka 」-> question marker particle
= “... Do you like the flowers?”
A pretty straight-forward sentence.
「はい。とても綺麗。 」
「はい ; hai 」-> yes
「とても ; totemo 」-> very
「綺麗 ; kirei 」-> pretty; beautiful; lovely
= “Yes. They’re very pretty.”
Can I just say that she looks so sad here? There is something very lonely about her expression and the way she looks at these flowers. I’ve mentioned it before in another post, but the flowers Rei likes so much are Rindou, and the meaning of them is “I love you who is sad”, “justice”, or “sincere; faithful” - this would probably be more something to talk about in a separate meta on Rei, but I think maybe she identifies with those flowers in a way? She doesn’t seem happy - and granted, who would be in her situation? Maybe her whole life has been sort of dictated by her family and about pleasing them instead of ever being truly happy. These flowers are a common theme in terms of their relationship, so it’s likely that here, she is the one who is sad and maybe she just wants to be loved despite knowing this marriage isn’t based on love. She might still be hopeful that it will turn into love eventually and for now, she just enjoys the thought that someone might love someone as sad and unhappy as her.
「強く。。。しかし触れれば溶けて消えてしまいそうな。。。」
「強く ; tsuyoku 」-> strong
「しかし ; shikashi 」-> however
「触れれば ; furereba 」-> to touch; to come in contact with (conditional form)
「溶けて ; tokete 」-> to melt
「消えて ; kiete 」-> ; to vanish
「しまい ; shimai 」-> to do something completely
「そうな ; souna 」-> it seems
= “Strong… however, she seems like she would completely melt and vanish if I touched her.”
Then… don’t. Anyway, as mentioned in other posts, a verb + shimau means either that something that was done was regrettable or that it was done completely. Shimai is the polite version of this same concept. Back to the present:

「冷。。。!おまえ。。。大丈夫。。。なのか」
「冷 ; rei 」-> Rei
「おまえ ; omae 」-> you
「大丈夫 ; daijoubu 」-> alright
「なのか ; nanoka 」-> question marker particle seeking an explanation
= “Rei…! You… are you alright?”
The no itself is already a question marker, but men often add ka to it to make it more ~manly~
「大丈夫じゃないよ」
「大丈夫 ; daijoubu 」-> alright
「じゃない」-> am not
「よ ; yo 」-> emphasis particle
= “I’m not alright!”
I’m not sure what kind of answer he expected, to be honest, but I think we can all appreciate Rei here. The official translation did a good job capturing that emphasis of yo by having her say “Okay? No, I’m not.” which bolds her statement a little more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「だから来たの」
「だから ; dakara 」-> that’s why
「来た ; kita 」-> came; arrived
「の ; no 」-> explanatory particle
= “That’s why I came.”
Other people have already pointed out how this line is similar to All Might’s catchphrase, which is 「私が来た」 - watashi ga kita. Obviously, she doesn’t say that exact line - although that would have been absolutely hilarious to see, just imagine you see your wife after ten years of her being in a mental hospital because of you and your obsession with your rival only for her to quote your rival’s catchphrase at you? Iconic! Anyway, it still has that same feeling to it.
Another thing worth noting is how much her expression here differs from the earlier flashbacks.
The panel of her looking at the flowers is a high-angle shot, which is used to make the subject seem inferior and looked down on. Additionally, that shot is from Endeavor’s POV, which is to give us a sense to show us how he viewed her - inferior. He is the hero and he is the one planning on using her to gain more power for himself. He made the decision to get a wife and thus initiated this whole relationship.
In this panel, though, we look at her with an eye-level shot. This is a neutral perspective, so it’s neither a superior or inferior situation, but there is still a specific atmosphere being created, usually done to make the viewer connect with the character and sort of having the character’s emotions be projected onto the viewer, especially in uncomfortable scenarios. To intensify this, we are staring directly at her. In the flashback, she is also turned to the side, so we don’t see her full face. Instead, she is avoiding eye contact and instead, is looking down at the flowers. Showing a character from the side creates a distance and makes it less clear what the character truly thinks.
But here, she is fully facing the viewers and staring directly at us. As mentioned before, this angle is meant to make you feel what the characters feel, especially when there’s an uncomfortable atmosphere. So here, when she says “That’s why I came” it’s supposed to make you uncomfortable. The “I am not alright” isn’t because her supposedly dead son turned out to be alive and a villain - she is not alright because of all the pain each of them endured for the past decade because of Endeavor. She lost ten years of her life, precious time with her kids, missed seeing them grow up, because of him. She wasn’t able to be there for them because of him. So no, she is not alright. But now she is out. And now she can finally regain some power. Power she never had in this relationship and possibly never had in her whole life. But now she is here. She is here because she feels guilty for what happened to her son, but she isn’t going to just give up. She is holding herself accountable, but she is making sure Endeavor knows he is the culprit. He is supposed to be uncomfortable and so should you (to understand that Endeavor is not the victim here) and anyone who sees that panel and thinks she is being supportive of him here? She isn’t.
I’ve seen a lot of people either claim that she is supporting Endeavor here or people say that she is being too soft on him here. While I don’t really see how this could possibly be her supporting him, I definitely do agree that Horikoshi seems to avoid wanting anyone directly pointing a finger at Endeavor, which is odd considering throughout the whole story everyone in the Todoroki family has always only ever blamed Endeavor. Dabi made it very clear in his broadcast that he wants to destroy Endeavor, Shouto always blamed Endeavor for his scar and for Rei being in the mental hospital, Natsuo can’t even have one dinner with Endeavor because he has always been neglected by him and because he blames Endeavor for what happened with Touya - rightfully so, by the way, Touya being alive doesn’t exactly change that Endeavor destroyed Touya. And given how Horikoshi writes female characters in general, it’s not really surprising that the only ones who don’t actively speak out against and blame Endeavor are the women of the family.
But while I do think that Horikoshi is toning down on that here and I don’t wanna give him too much credit, we should also keep in mind that this is the first time in ten years that Rei talks to him. Just a few months prior, when Fuyumi and Natsuo visited her, she said that she was still afraid to see him. I think it’s actually more realistic that she isn’t yelling at him or anything like that, yet is still able to at least put him in his place and remind him that this isn’t about him.
And that’s the other reason why I think it makes sense she reacts the way she does. It’s not about him, but this is also not about her. The last line of chapter 300 was saying “I’m here to talk about our family and Touya.” This isn’t about any of them individually except for Touya (more on that later). So if she gave an entire speech here about how much pain Endeavor has caused her and how he took ten years of her life away, this simply isn’t the time. Instead, she is prioritizing Touya.
Could she be a bit more clear that Endeavor is the culprit who caused them all a lot of pain and trauma? Yes, apparently she needs to say this more clearly considering how many people absolutely fail to interpret this correctly by claiming they are a happy family. But it’s not the most unrealistic way to write her here, either.
But let’s move on to Dabi and where the main criticism for the official translation comes in:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「だいぶ焼けたな。。。」
「だいぶ ; daibu 」-> considerably; greatly; a lot
「焼けた ; yaketa 」-> burned
「な ; na 」-> sentence ending particle; usually used to seek confirmation
= “Burned a lot, huh…”
Someone recently pointed out to me that Dabi’s staples might actually just be there for him to check how much his scars are spreading. And that really does seem to be the case now as he has simply moved them to the new edges of the scars. The new burns aren’t yet as intense as the rest, so I guess those aren’t skin grafts that need to be held in place, after all, but just his skin heavily burned?
As mentioned above, na gets used at the end of a statement to seek confirmation, however, it can also be used in a more rhetorical sense to make a sentence less assertive in order to simply introduce a topic in a more casual and less abrupt way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「何も感じねぇ」
「何も ; nanimo 」-> (not) anything
「感じねぇ ; kanjinee 」-> not feeling
= “I don’t feel anything.”
The normal negation of kanjiru (to feel) is kanjinai. Changing the nai into nee is a more casual form, but it can also be used instead of nai to add more emotion/feeling to what is being said, which is kinda ironic in a sentence talking about his inability to feel anything.
Dabi generally uses both forms (nai and nee) for negation so it’s hard to say if this is just him negating a word or if this form gets used to put more emotion to it, though it’s probably a mixture of both considering he is just lying there and reflecting on the situation.
More importantly, this sentence reminded me of what he said to Shouto in chapter 292 「そうだよ焦凍。兄ちゃん何も感じなくなっちまった。」- “That’s right, Shouto. Nii-Chan has completely stopped feeling anything.”
While the line from chapter 292 is referring to his mental state, he is now talking about his physical state. So basically, Dabi is completely numb - both physically and mentally. Fun times!
「あいつは俺の親父だ。あの程度で死ねるようなタマじゃねえ。例え死にたくても立場がそれを許さない。」
「あいつ ; aitsu 」-> he; that guy
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「親父 ; oyaji 」-> dad
「だ ; da 」-> be
「あの ; ano 」-> that
「程度 ; teido 」-> degree; amount
「で ; de 」-> by; of
「死ねる ; shineru 」-> to die (potential form)
「ような ; youna 」-> like; similar to
「タマ ; tama 」-> person (when commenting on their nature); character
「じゃねえ ; janee」-> isn’t
「例え死にたくても」-> even if you want to die (例え...ても + 死にたく)
「立場 ; tachiba 」-> position; situation
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「それ ; sore 」-> that
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「許さない ; yurusanai 」-> doesn’t allow
= “That guy is my dad. He isn’t the kind of person to die from something of that degree. Even if he wanted to die, the situation doesn’t allow that.”
A few things to note here:
First of all, and I know this is a big shocker to us all, and it does pain me to say, but he does not say “adios” here. He really just says “want to die” and, although this is such an unimportant change it’s just really annoying to constantly see him being translated in such a weird way. Even minor changes like this one just make him sound strange. Dabi is someone who chooses his words carefully, so it really does alter people’s perception of him when he suddenly starts speaking like that. Does anyone actually talk like that?
“He isn’t the person to die from something of that degree” - Here, Dabi uses “tama” which is usually written in Kanji, but is written in Katakana here for emphasis. More importantly, though, this is a derogatory term.
Anyway, that sentence follows after the obvious statement of “That guy is my dad” - which isn’t new information to us, but this is the reason why he concludes that Endeavor hasn’t died without actually having that confirmed. He is able to tell how much damage Endeavor can take, possibly also stating here that as long as Dabi himself doesn’t die from his attack, Endeavor also wouldn’t have died. So much for his self-confidence! The “dear old dad” in the official translation yet again sounds a bit odd. It might be used to make a more clear distinction between otousan and oyaji, but much like boku and ore (male pronouns), you don’t really need to make a distinction in English because it’s just something unique to Japanese, and trying to translate it results in something like “dear old dad” which just makes the character sound weird because no one says that in English.
“The situation doesn’t allow it” - while the fan translation went for “I won’t allow it” the official translation went for “His position won’t allow it” - all of which are different statements. It’s hard to determine which of these is correct since there isn’t a pronoun used here. The reason I went for “the situation” is because it seems like he is referring to the current state the country is in. We’ve already been shown how much damage has done and the “I am not here” statue shown in the previous chapter is a good summary of that. Although it’s unlikely that Endeavor could do much to make things go back to how they used to be before the reveal, the country is still waiting for his statement, which will further impact the situation. If he died now, it would probably be the end for heroes, whereas him being alive and trying to somehow save the country could bring a little hope back to the people. So basically, the future depends on him (not really, but that’s the general idea here).
「そろそろ表に出てくる頃合いだ。」
「そろそろ ; sorosoro」-> gradually; soon
「表 ; omote 」-> surface
「に ; ni 」-> to
「出てくる ; detekuru 」-> to come out; to appear
「頃合い ; koroai 」-> suitable time; good time
「だ ; da 」-> be
= “Soon it’s a good time to come to the surface.”
Much like the rest of the country, Dabi is clearly also awaiting Endeavor’s statement to the public so he can plan his next move.
Something to note here is that these two panels use the thinking speech bubbles, so we have two different kinds of internal monologues from Dabi in this scene: interior monologue and soliloquy. Soliloquy refers to a speech given to oneself out loud, which is why this is commonly found in plays in order to show what a character is thinking since you can’t make the audience hear the character’s thoughts otherwise.
An interior monologue gives us readers immediate access to a character’s unfiltered thoughts. Since we don’t exactly control our thoughts, we often jump from one thought to another without explaining how we got there. So when Dabi thinks “That guy is my dad.” followed by “He isn’t the kind of person to die from something of that degree.” - he doesn’t have to go into an elaborate explanation as to why the second sentence is the conclusion of his first statement because he just knows.
A soliloquy isn’t too different as the character is still their own audience. However, this style is often used to amplify a character’s thoughts, in a way signaling that they can’t keep their thoughts inside anymore so instead they just come out of the character’s mouth. Using these two styles here emphasizes the soliloquy even further. While his interior monologue is a reflection of what happened and tells us that Dabi already knew he wasn’t going to kill Endeavor back then, the soliloquy part focuses more on his actual feelings. This last part of his interior monologue, where he concludes that Endeavor will have to face the public soon, serves as a trigger of his following excitement, highlighting his obsession with making his dreams of ruining Endeavor come true.

「早く惨めな面が見てぇ楽しみだ。ここまで長かった。」
「早く ; hayaku 」-> soon; quick (adverb)
「惨めな ; mijime na 」-> miserable
「面 ; men 」-> face; mask
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「見てぇ ; mitee 」-> to see
「楽しみ ; tanoshimi 」-> anticipation; looking forward to
「だ ; da 」-> be
「ここまで ; koko made 」-> so far
「長かった ; nagakatta 」-> was long (time)
= “I’m looking forward to seeing your miserable face soon. It’s been a long time so far.”
Here we have another case of the official English translation making him talk in ways no one talks. Aside from the “pathetic mug” part, Dabi doesn’t say “damn” - considering swear words aren’t really a thing in Japanese anyway. But he’s also generally not really talking in a rude way here, it’s just a pretty straight-forward sentence. To be honest, I think the reason why certain characters (i.e. Dabi) get written like that™ is to add character and distinguish them from less casual-speaking characters? To show that this is a character that’s a bit on the rougher side? Even so, he doesn’t actually talk like that, and trying to make him sound rough in every single sentence is a bit of an overkill. I get that he’s dramatic, but that still doesn’t mean that he speaks like he never read a normal book.
To quickly bring up the soliloquy again: You can see with this sentence that this is far more subjective. “Soon it’s a good time to come to the surface” was somewhat objective as the whole country awaits Endeavor’s public statement to this situation. But “I’m looking forward to seeing your miserable face soon. It’s been a long time so far” is subjective. The public might not necessarily care about a hero being exposed. But Dabi cares because to him, this whole reveal is personal (obviously). This plan has been in the making for around ten years, whereas the rest of the country was unaware of the truth about Endeavor up until a few days ago.

「轟炎司。お母さん。冬美ちゃん。夏くん。。。。。。焦凍。」
「轟炎司 ; todoroki enji 」-> Enji Todoroki
「お母さん ; okaasan 」-> mom
「冬美ちゃん ; fuyumi chan」-> Fuyumi-Chan
「夏くん ; natsu kun」-> Natsu-Kun
「焦凍 ; shouto 」-> Shouto
= “Enji Todoroki. Mom. Fuyumi-Chan. Natsu-Kun….. Shouto.”
While we can’t exactly blame the official translation for not including these suffixes, the distinction with Shouto doesn’t really show in the translation at all. Endeavor is an obvious one in either version - addressing your parent by full name indicates a distance as this shows no signs of familiarity. Much like his other siblings (I will talk about this at some point in a separate post) he calls his mom okaasan, a pretty normal way to say mom. As the older sibling, he wouldn’t have to use a suffix for any of his siblings, but this can - especially in a case like this - show familiarity. Aside from the many many dots representing a small pause he makes before even naming Shouto almost like he initially forgot about him, Shouto is also the only one only being called by name without a suffix, so the distinction becomes far more pronounced. It’s obvious that Touya, Fuyumi, and Natsuo grew up together and spent a lot of time together, thus he still uses these suffixes. But Shouto is just… Shouto. There is no relationship between them and the many dots just show this distance between the two.

「俺を見てくれ地獄の底で。」
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「見てくれ ; mitekure 」-> please look at me
「地獄 ; jigoku 」-> hell
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「底 ; soko 」-> bottom
「で ; de 」-> in
= “Please look at me in the depths of hell.”
The kure at the end of mitekure gets used when asking a favor from someone.
The official translation yet again sounds a bit weirder with the “Take a real good look at me” when kure is more of a “Please look at me” which sounds less assertive. Anyway, Dabi is clearly trying to state that his life is hell and now they get to see it, too. At the end of the chapter, Rei says that she and Endeavor both didn’t look at him before and there are several times during the flashback where Touya says “look at me!” which is all a summary of where this whole thing went wrong: Touya was in pain, and he made it known that he needed help and that he wasn’t okay, but both his parents ignored that. And so now his broadcast forces them to look at him. Forces them to look at what happened as a result of them ignoring his pain before. It’s not just to show the civilians how their heroes aren’t all that heroic, but more importantly, it’s so that someone can see his pain. He’s not giving them a choice, either. Though people - both in bnha society and in the fandom - write Dabi off as annoying or continue to refuse to see him as a victim, it really doesn’t matter because what he has accomplished is making people experience his pain. He is damaging society just how society has damaged him. Just how his father said “you’re not good enough” it’s now Dabi’s turn to say the same thing to him and society.
Dabi is already in the depths of hell, yet so far his family didn’t know that. But now they do and now they have to face the facts.

Sekkaku doesn’t have a direct translation, but here it emphasizes that an opportunity has come up (Endeavor having a day off), which would be a shame to waste by not spending it with training. The nanda in nandakara is a preliminary remark, which can be used to get the listener’s attention to the conclusion that follows after. Again, these are nuances that you can’t necessarily translate. But at least little Touya talks more like a normal person than Dabi.

「何度も言ったろう。おまえの為なんだ。」
「何度も ; nando mo 」-> many times over; often
「言ったろう ; ittarou 」-> told; said
「おまえ ; omae 」-> you
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「為 ; tame 」-> advantage; benefit
「んだ ; nda 」-> explanatory particle
= “I’ve told you many times. It’s for your benefit.”
The tarou ending in ittarou is used to add an accusatory tone to the phrase, so it shows somewhat of an impatience/annoyance here. Imagine being Touya. You always look forward to your training days with your incredible dad. And suddenly, he keeps canceling on you and just says “it’s for your own good” - kids aren’t stupid, and they know when they are treated as though they were. So it’s obviously frustrating that his dad just gives him weak excuses instead of being honest with him. And it’s not like Endeavor is seeking an actual way to help Touya. All he does is go to the doctor, gets told that Touya’s body and quirk don’t match, and then his solution is to stop training him. It’s one thing to be a concerned parent and keep your child away from harm, but it’s more important to think about how you keep them from harm and whether or not you ensure that they know that failing doesn’t mean that they are a failure. Problem is, Endeavor can’t tell him he’s not a failure since Touya is a failed project so he does, in fact, see him as a failure.
If you take a quick look at Touya, you can see his hair is only now starting to get a few white spots. It’s difficult to determine the exact timeline of things, but it’s obvious that this takes place only shortly after his hair first started turning white, which means that Endeavor went to the doctor pretty quickly. And yes, he says this is for Touya’s sake but remind me again why Touya is born? Oh right, for Endeavor’s sake! Anyway, moving on to the doctor’s office:

In the last part, we once again have the verb + shimau constellation, which always either indicates that something happened regrettable or completely. In a way, both meanings apply here since Touya’s body fully takes after Rei’s constitution, but this is also obviously regrettable since it’s a waste of his strong fire quirk. In the official translation, he just says “he takes after his mother physically” which doesn’t really carry either nuance.

Considering all the support items the heroes have, I feel like they could have found a solution to this. Dabi’s current coat helps cool him down, so why did Endeavor not think of something like that?

I feel like a normal doctor should maybe inform someone that this Top Hero is having a little eugenics project on the side. Maybe also call Child Protective Services. But since we’re all assuming this doctor is Dr. Ujiko, it’s not exactly surprising that he left it at “giving advice” which he is just as good at as Endeavor. Those two would truly get along well.

「なんと ; nanto 」-> what…!; surprisingly; believe it or not
「今日 ; kyou 」-> today
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「62 ; 62 」-> 62
「も ; mo 」-> emphasizes the number
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「市町村 ; shichouson 」-> cities, towns and villages
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「救いました ; sukuimashita 」-> saved
「オールマイト ; oorumaito 」-> All Might
「がいる ; ga iru 」-> there is
「限り ; kiri 」-> as long as
「我々 ; wareware 」-> we
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「悪 ; aku 」-> evil
「に ; ni 」-> to
「屈する ; kussuru 」-> to yield; to give in
「事 ; koto」-> nominalizes the verb it attaches to
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「決してない ; kesshitenai 」-> never; by no means
「でしょう ; deshou 」-> used to express certainty
= “What! Today, 62 cities, towns, and villages were saved! We will certainly never give in to evil as long as All Might is there!”
The mo after the 62 implies that 62 is a large number and granted, that is a lot of places to save in one day.
「燈矢。おまえならオールマイトを超えられる。」
「燈矢 ; touya 」-> Touya
「おまえ ; omae 」-> you
「なら ; nara 」-> on the topic of; if
「オールマイト ; oorumaito 」-> All Might
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「超えられる ; koerareru 」-> to surpass (potential)
= “Touya. You can surpass All Might.”
Let’s move on to some sibling interaction, though:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「冬美ちゃん。ちょっと火傷するくらいなのにさ!全然がまんできるのにさ!」
「冬美ちゃん ; fuyumi chan」-> Fuyumi
「ちょっと ; chotto 」-> a little
「火傷する ; yakedo suru」-> to burn
「くらい ; kurai 」-> used to describe a state, situation
「なのに ; nanoni 」-> even though; although
「さ ; sa 」-> emphasis particle
「全然 ; zen zen 」-> entirely; completely
「がまん ; gaman 」-> bearing (something)
「できる ; dekiru 」-> be able to
「のに ; noni 」-> used when complaining to someone
「さ ; sa 」-> emphasis particle; also used to let out emotions
= “Fuyumi-Chan. I only burn a little! I am able to endure it!”
Noni is something that roughly translates to even though, and usually gets followed with a second part of the phrase, but that follow-up part can be left out when you can understand it from context. So in that first part, he’s basically saying “Even though I got burned a little, I can still do this so he shouldn’t stop training me!” The second noni is used as a way to complain about the situation (= “Even though I am completely able to endure it, I get treated like I’m weak.”)
「俺の身体のことは俺が一番よくわかってるんだ。」
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「身体 ; karada 」-> body
「のことは」-> nominalizes the preceding phrase
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「一番 ; ichiban 」-> the most
「よく ; yoku 」-> good (adverb)
「わかってるん ; wakatterun 」-> to understand; to know
「だ ; da 」-> be
= “I am the one that knows my body the best.”
We don’t know how fast his hair color was changing, but this is probably a few months after his hair first began to turn white. So at this point, Endeavor already knows that Touya’s body and quirk aren’t compatible yet still hasn’t bothered to come up with a solution. Instead, Touya keeps training. It’s odd that no one seems to try and properly stop him and make him understand that training isn’t good for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「でも冬美も燈矢兄ボロボロなの心配嫌っ。」
「でも ; demo 」-> but
「冬美 ; fuyumi」-> Fuyumi
「も ; mo 」-> also
「燈矢兄 ; touya-nii 」-> Touya-Nii
「ボロボロ ; boroboro 」-> worn-out (physically); tattered
「なの ; nano 」-> this particle functions as a substitute for a noun (= his body)
「心配 ; shinpai 」-> worry
「嫌っ ; yaa 」-> casual no
= “But Fuyumi also doesn’t [want to] worry about Touya-Nii [being] tattered.”
Me too, Fuyumi, me too.
「冬美ちゃんにはわかんねーよ!女の子にはわかんねンだ!」
「冬美ちゃん ; fuyumi chan」-> Fuyumi-Chan
「には ; niwa 」-> as for
「わかんねー」-> doesn’t understand
「よ ; yo 」-> emphasis particle
「女の子」->
「には ; niwa 」-> as for
「わかんね」-> doesn’t understand
「ンだ ; nda 」-> explanatory particle
= “Fuyumi doesn’t understand! Girls don’t understand!”
The n in nda is written in Katakana, once again for emphasis.
Also he looks so adorable the way he is marching out of the room there. Tiny Touya.
Still can’t believe some people in this fandom apparently were never (around) kids and somehow drew the conclusion that Touya is sexist. What a great takeaway from this entire chapter! Anyway, that’s just how kids talk - and definitely something brothers say to their sisters - but I’m pretty sure if he tried to say something like that now Fuyumi wouldn’t let him get away with it. But she’s like 2 (?) here, so not like she cares. Oh and… if you think “a girl wouldn’t get it” is sexist, then wouldn’t you also have that same energy in regards to a man solely getting a wife to use her as a baby-maker-machine, and then after putting her into a mental hospital proceeding to turn his only daughter (who was only created as emotional support person for her older brother) into a replacement for the mom? Yeah, I’m really surprised little Touya would say something that could be considered sexist...
「心配ちてんのに!! 」
「心配ちてん ; shinpai chiten 」-> worrying
「のに ; noni 」-> used when complaining to someone
= “I’m worrying!!”
Here, little Fuyumi-Chan is basically complaining that Touya-Nii is mad and says she doesn’t understand, even though she is just worried about him. Everybody say “Thank you, Fuyumi!” for caring about Touya. Now, moving on to the actual sad panel:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「俺はもう「超えたい」って思ってるんだ!火をつけたのはお父さんだ!」
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「もう ; mou 」-> already
「超えたい ; koetai 」-> want to surpass
「って思ってるん ; tte omotterun 」-> thinking
「だ ; da 」-> be
「火をつけた ; hi o tsuketa 」-> ignited
「のは ; no wa」->
「お父さん ; otousan 」-> dad
「だ ; da 」-> be
= “I’m already thinking ‘I want to surpass him’! Dad is the one that ignited that flame in me!”
He is crying! Already! He acted tougher before walking away, but now that he is facing away from Fuyumi, the tears start rolling in a very defensive way. It’s basically him knowing that he can’t live up to his father’s expectations, but this is what he wants. He “wants” to surpass All Might, but it’s Endeavor who ignited that fire in him. Kids oftentimes have one parent they are closer to and sometimes even look up to. For Touya, that’s obviously Endeavor. He wants to make his father proud and wants to be what his father wants him to be.
Clearly, he’s always been very smart and also very self-aware. He’s always known his limits, but also back then refused to admit to it because he still had hope that he would somehow be able to be this incredible hero, despite his limitations. He wasn’t willing to just give up back then, and even now in the present time, he doesn’t give up. He can’t just let go and move on with his life, because no one ever told him that was an acceptable option. Not performing well meant his father loved him less. That’s why he never gave up because a child naturally craves their parents’ attention and love, even if it isn’t a healthy love. So who would give up something if that would result in not being loved anymore?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「それは。。。あんまりだよ。。。!残酷じゃない!あなたが子どもに何を求めてるか燈矢はもう知ってる!」
「それ ; sore 」-> that
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「あんまり ; anmari 」-> too much
「だ ; da 」-> be
「よ ; yo 」-> emphasis particle
「残酷 ; zankoku 」-> cruel
「じゃない ; janai 」-> used to express emotion; when you want to accuse someone
「あなた ; anata 」-> you
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「子ども ; kodomo 」-> child
「に ; ni 」-> for
「何 ; nani 」-> what
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「求めてる ; motometeru 」-> searching for; seeking
「か ; ka 」-> represents the intention of a question
「燈矢 ; touya 」-> Touya
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「もう ; mou 」-> already
「知ってる ; shitteru 」-> to know
= “That is… too much…! It’s cruel! Touya already knows what you want children for!”
A difference I noticed between the original version and the official English translation is that in the official translation Rei says “That would be too cruel!” whereas in the original version she says “That is cruel!” accompanied by janai which is used when you want to accuse someone. The “would” seems a bit more like Endeavor merely suggested something, but it’s still undecided. In reality, he’s not asking for her permission. It’s not about what Rei wants, yet she is still trying to make him come back to his senses and realize what effects his actions have on Touya.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「どれだけ言っても。。。毎日新しい火傷をつくってくる。。。」
「どれだけ ; dore dake 」-> how much
「言っても ; ittemo 」-> although I say
「毎日 ; mainichi 」-> every day
「新しい ; atarashii 」-> new
「火傷 ; yakedo 」-> burn
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「つくってくる ; tsukuttekuru」-> continue to get (つくる + てくる)
= “Despite how much I say, he continues to get new burns every day.”
Well, the earlier advice of “it’s for your own good” isn’t exactly the best way to get your child to understand why it shouldn’t do something. There probably could’ve been a bit more initiative here, you know, like getting a therapist involved. Someone, who actually understands children and knows how to handle them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「バカなところも俺に似た。。。!諦めさせるにはそれしかない。。。燈矢には。。。超えられない 。」
「バカ ; baka 」-> idiot
「なところ ; na tokoro」-> aspect; side
「も ; mo 」-> also; too
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「に似た ; ni nita」-> resembled
「諦めさせる ; akirameru 」-> make someone give up
「には ; niwa 」-> as for
「それ ; sore 」-> that
「しかない ; shika nai 」-> only
「燈矢 ; touya 」-> Touya
「には ; niwa 」-> as for
「超えられない ; koerarenai 」-> can’t surpass
= “He also resembles me with the idiot aspect…! That is the only way to make him give up… Touya can’t surpass him.”
Those last two panels honestly look straight out of a horror story. Is that the face of a loving family man? Apparently so!
These posts originally started out because of the bias and obviously, Dabi is still written weirdly, but I do have to point out that the official translation at least doesn’t make Endeavor sound nicer here than he actually is.
I also find it interesting how Rei is drawn here, with half her face being in a shadow, which is usually a style used to show a character’s sinister side. Here, it’s accompanied by a sweat drop, which often indicates exasperation. This might indicate the start of a turning point for her. And this turning point is something that you see over the following panels until it comes to a finale on everyone’s faces once Shouto is born:
Tumblr media
Looking at their eyes, they all look less than fine here.
Touya just kinda stares lifelessly. As Rei stated in the previous scene, Touya already knows why he and his siblings exist. He already knew when Natsuo was born and thus, Natsuo’s existence was living proof that Touya was still not enough. Yet, he still refuses to give up and desperately tries to prove himself to his father. And then 3 ½ years later, another sibling arrives.
Rei has shading under her eye and her eyes only half-way open, indicating fatigue. Obviously, giving birth would do that, but she’s also just generally tired of this and probably began to understand how powerless she is. And Endeavor has his eyes wide-open with tiny pupils, often indicating a character’s drive (not in a good way). He knows this is the one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「お父さん。俺も超えられるよ。ほら。。。こんなに強い炎が出せるようになったんだ 。俺のこと見てよ。 」
「お父さん ; otousan 」-> dad
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「も ; mo 」-> too
「超えられる ; koerareru 」-> can surpass
「よ ; yo 」-> emphasis particle
「ほら ; hora 」-> look!, hey!
「こんなに ; konna ni」-> such
「強い ; tsuyoi 」-> strong
「炎 ; honou 」-> flame
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「出せる ; daseru 」-> can produce; start (a fire)
「ようになったん ; you ni nattan 」-> have reached the point that
「だ ; da 」-> be
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「のこと ; no koto 」-> about
「見て ; mite 」-> look
「よ ; yo 」-> emphasis particle
= “Dad. I can also surpass him. Look… I have reached the point that I can produce such strong flames. Look at me!”
Based on this scene we can conclude that Touya kept training on his own. Endeavor knows about this, yet never bothered to actually stop him from going out to train (just saying “don’t do this” isn’t enough).
You can just see the desperation on his face, completely ignoring the tears running down his face. He is already at a point here where his feelings start to be tuned out. The only thing that’s on his mind is his goal of proving himself as the worthy successor.

「ダメだ!何故わからん!そこまでの火傷を負って何故わからないんだ!!」
「ダメ ; dame 」-> no good

「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「火傷 ; yakedo 」-> burn
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「負って ; otte 」-> receive (wound); injured
「何故 ; naze 」-> why
「わからない ; wakaranai 」-> don’t understand
「んだ ; nda 」-> explanatory particle
= “No good! I don’t understand why! You get so many burns and still don’t understand!!”
Again, not a great way to get your kid to understand anything. Yelling isn’t helping, either! Neither is telling them you don’t understand why they don’t understand.

「見ろ ; miro 」-> look (imperative)
「冬美 ; fuyumi」-> Fuyumi
「や ; ya 」-> and
「夏雄 ; natsuo」-> Natsuo
「と ; to 」-> with
「遊べ ; asobe 」-> play (imperative)
「学校 ; gakkou 」-> school
「で ; de 」-> at
「友達 ; tomodachi 」-> friends
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「つくれ ; tsukure 」-> to make (imperative)
「ヒーロー ; hiro 」-> hero
「以外 ; igai 」-> excepting; with the exception of

「沢山 ; takusan 」-> plenty; enough; a large number
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「世界 ; sekai 」-> world
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「ある ; aru 」-> be
「わかる ; wakaru 」-> to understand
「だろう ; darou 」-> don’t you agree
= “Touya…!! Look outside! Play with Fuyumi and Natsuo!! Make friends at school! There are other things than heroes… there are many worlds… you understand that, don’t you!”
The darou at the end here is a little assertive, like saying “This is how I see it and you should agree!” which is captured in the official translation by him saying “I know you understand” - which is a funny phrasing since Touya obviously doesn’t understand.
I get that being a hero is often reduced to just being about fighting, but how is this man so incapable of understanding his own child? He knows Touya goes out training regularly - and has been for years - and keeps coming home with burns and even after all this time Touya still doesn’t listen to him, and yet his incredible advice here is “Go get some friends!” Is that… helpful to anyone? No wonder he never got to the Number One position if that’s how he tries to save people.
There’s actually a chapter in the School Briefs light novels (no spoilers) that brings up this topic too: What kind of hero are you if you can’t even save your own family?
And we’re not talking about Touya being held at gunpoint or something; we’re talking about years and years of this child’s mental and physical health decreasing, very obviously so, and it’s not getting any better.
Touya doesn’t do this because he’s jealous because he already did all of this before any of his competitors (= Natsuo and Shouto) were born. He’s doing this because he is a child and like any other child out there just wants his parents’ love and attention, which is literally the parents’ whole job. Endeavor failed both as a father and a hero.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「そうしていく内に忘れる。」
「そうしていく ; soushiteiku 」-> continue to do so (そうする + ていく)
「内に ; uchi ni 」-> while
「忘れる ; wasureru 」-> to forget about it
= “While you continue to do so, you’ll forget about it.”
I don’t even know if he thinks this is good advice? Surely, no one could think this would be helpful here, right…?
「学校の子は皆ヒーローになるってさ。。。!。。。わかるはずないだろ。。。!」
「学校 ; gakkou 」-> school
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「子 ; ko 」-> kids
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「皆 ; minna 」-> everyone
「ヒーロー ; hiro 」-> hero
「になる ; ni naru 」-> to become
「って ; tte 」-> quotation marker
「さ ; sa 」-> emphasis particle
「わかる ; wakaru 」-> to understand
「はずない ; hazu nai 」-> cannot be
「だろ ; daro 」-> right; I think
= “The kids at school all say they’ll become heroes…! I cannot understand, right?”
Hazu nai is used to strongly emphasize that something cannot be. In this case, Touya cannot possibly understand that concept of just letting go because this is his whole identity and you can’t just toss your whole identity away, especially when that identity is necessary in order to get your parents’ attention and love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「俺はお父さんの子どもなんだから」
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「お父さん ; otousan 」-> dad
「の ; no 」-> possessive particle; similar to an apostrophe
「子ども ; kodomo 」-> child
「なんだから ; nandakara 」-> because; after all
= “After all, I am your child.”
Nandakara has an important nuance that’s worth talking about it. It’s used to give an explanation or emphasize something that both the listener and speaker know and expresses a strong emotion that the speaker feels and that the listener doesn’t fully appreciate. Apparently, some people had an issue with the official translation here and claiming it sounded too accusatory. Anyway, this child has every right to accuse his father of expecting him to just give up on his attempt at reaching his goal when Endeavor got married and had four kids because he wasn’t immediately handed the Number One position. That sure is ironic and sad that little Touya understands this so well, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「冷やさなきゃ」
「冷やさなきゃ; hiyasanakya 」-> must cool; must calm down; must cool off (冷やす + なきゃ)
= “We must cool him off!”
This is a pun that also works in English! While the word hiyasu can mean to cool off in the sense of calming down, it can also mean to cool (from room temperature); to refrigerate. And both meanings are applicable here since Touya is having a breakdown and needs to be calmed down mentally, but he also seems to be sweating almost like his quirk is building up inside of him and about to boil over, which it then does as he tries to attack Shouto, so he also needs to be physically cooled down.
「お父さんが火をつけたんだ。。。!消えないんだよ。。。!!なかったことになんて。。。できないんだよ!」
「お父さん ; otousan 」-> dad
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「火をつけた ; hi wo tsuketa 」-> ignited
「んだ ; nda 」-> explanatory particle
「消えない ; kienai 」-> won’t go out
「んだ ; nda 」-> explanatory particle
「よ ; yo 」-> emphasis particle
「なかったことに ; nakatta koto ni 」-> to forget something ever existed; to pretend something didn’t happen
「なんて ; nante 」-> something like
「できない ; dekinai 」-> can’t
「んだ ; nda 」-> explanatory particle
「よ ; yo 」-> emphasis particle
= “Dad ignited that fire in me…! It won’t go out…!! I can’t just pretend something like that never existed, you know!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「俺を見てろよ。。。!!エンデヴァー 俺を見てろよ!!!」
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「見てろよ ; mitero yo」-> just you wait and see (as a threat)
「エンデヴァー ; endevaa 」-> Endeavor
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「見てろよ ; mitero yo」-> just you wait and see (as a threat)
= “Just look at me…!! Endeavor, just look at me!!!”
So mitero yo is an expression meaning “just you wait and see” and it consists of the imperative form on miteru (= you must be looking) and the yo emphasizes this more. “Just you wait and see” obviously sounds far more threatening (because it is) and also kind of makes sense when considering where they are now in the present time. Now - fifteen years or so later - Endeavor sees him. This goes back to the earlier part where Dabi said “Watch me from the depths of hell” - it’s a different form (in that part he says mitekure, while here he says mitero yo) but he’s always telling his family to look at him. Because, at the end of the day, that’s where it all went wrong. No one ever truly saw him and his pain until one day, he broke. What exactly is a child supposed to do? Endeavor has gotten away with not looking for too long, but Dabi won’t let him go on like that anymore.
And notice how he says the same line twice here? And in the middle he says “Endeavor” - for the first time, he addresses him by his hero name instead of calling him dad. This is because he isn’t just asking his father to look at him, but he’s also threatening Endeavor. I think this might actually hint that he’s already having thoughts of turning into a villain? Maybe he already thought about what it would be like to just turn himself into a villain and refuse Endeavor from reaching his goals just as Endeavor has refused Touya from reaching his goals. Whether he actively thought about this or whether that was more of a subconscious feeling is hard to say but it’s clear that at that point he already viewed Endeavor, the hero, as the bad guy that took his father away from him. If it wasn’t for Endeavor, the hero, then Touya wouldn’t have to prove his worth to his father by having a strong quirk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
「一番辛いのはあなたじゃないし。あの子を見なかったのはあなただけじゃない。」
「一番 ; ichiban 」-> the most; number one
「辛い ; tsurai 」-> painful; difficult (emotionally)
「のは ; no wa」-> nominalizer + topic marker
「あなた ; anata 」-> you
「じゃない ; janai 」-> aren’t
「し ; shi 」-> emphasizes the point you make
「あの ; ano 」-> that
「子 ; ko 」-> child
「を ; o 」-> direct object marker
「見なかった ; minakatta 」-> didn’t look
「のは ; no wa」-> nominalizer + topic marker
「あなた ; anata 」-> you
「だけ ; dake 」-> only
「じゃない ; janai 」-> aren’t
= “You are not the one with the most pain. You aren’t the only one that didn’t look at that child.”
This is another line where some people claimed the official translation made Rei sound harsher than she actually is. But I don’t think she’s even being harsh here? She’s just stating a fact. And just compare the two of them real quick: Rei just got out of the mental hospital she stayed in for ten years and upon finding out what really happened with Touya, immediately took responsibility and decided to do something. Endeavor, on the other hand, is crying in his hospital bed because suddenly he regrets that he failed as a parent for over twenty years. I don’t think she’s being harsh by telling him that he isn’t the one who is hurting the most when that’s just a fact. And the “you don’t get to claim” phrasing of the official translation isn’t really harsh, it’s just being direct. But Endeavor is a grown man and with all the pain he has caused his family, I think he can deal with not being handled like some fragile little thing.
What I find interesting about this line is that it’s essentially a continuation to what she said in the last chapter when she stated that “Everyone else is having those feelings a lot more than you” Now, she is adding to that because not only has the rest of the family suffered a lot more than Endeavor, but one person in particular - Touya - is currently in the most amount of pain out of any of them. Endeavor’s self-pity and regrets have no space here because Touya is the actual victim here, and not Endeavor for having been exposed for something he chose to do for over two decades.
They both never looked at that child, but now it’s time to change that and finally start looking at him.
There weren’t really a lot of changes in the translation - aside from our now Spanish-speaking amigo, Dabi - but there’s still a lot to talk about, as you can see by this very very long post. So if you read all of this, thank you! And also congrats for making it through! There’s always nuance that just doesn’t translate but is still important to mention and gives a better insight into the characters. This chapter was just the first part so chapter 302 will surely give us some more clarity, possibly even finally revealing what actually happened on the day Touya supposedly died. So now let’s see what the next chapter will bring.

Nuyate, the Complete Grammar Guide (WIP)
The Language of the Clans was one of the languages nearly completely destroyed after the Great Connection event. Although everyone knows that it once existed and there are some clan artifacts still written in the old tongue, nowadays, the clans have come to the point where only the medics can speak the language fluently. It’s said that during the Dawn of the Clans, the medics accessing the Moonstone were able to speak to their eldest ancestors who still knew the language.
Although it was saddening that most of their clan had lost their language, the Ancients made the medics swear not to teach the rest of their clan the language as the reason for the fall was because of the violence and lack of empathy between species, so the Ancient Tongue would be kept between the medics and sometimes, the leaders.
When you speak to the clans, assume that only the medics speak their own tongue fluently while the rest of the clan mostly only has sparse words that were commonly used enough that they resisted the wipe.

Part 3: Noun Cases
---
The Old Language of the clans have four noun cases - Nominative, Accusative, Ablative and Allative cases.
Nominative (n/a): The nominative is the agent of the sentence the one committing and performing actions against others - being that this being is often the topic of the sentence, it’s also the one most frequently left unmarked.
Accusative (-(a)yen): The accusative is the one having things done to them - they’re the object that’s affected by the nominative.
Ablative (-(a)len): The ablative case is motion away from something - such as running, walking or turning. It’s also used as a spawning case - when it was still being spoken, this case was used most frequently in daily life for names.
Allative (-(a)wen): The allative case is for motion towards something - it’s the opposite of the ablative case and means something like -ward.
---
Example Sentences
Ba keme run ba dakeyen - The cat bites the dog
Ba keme kulan ba suyawen - The cat runs towards the sun/sunward
Ba keme kulan ba suyalen - The cat runs away from the sun
---
Part 4: Grammatical Number
---
Nuyate keeps everything straightforward regarding grammatical gender - there’s only a singular/plural distinction.
Singular (n/a) - Is when there’s only one of a thing and always left bare.
Plural (d(o) - Is when there’s more than one of a noun.
Example: Keme (cat) vs Dokeme (cats)
---
Part 5: Tense and Aspect
---
The tenses of Nuyate is where we get slightly more complex - they have a past, distant past, present and future tense which are all fused with their aspects - perfective and imperfective.

Nuyate like Asitatu has a set of dependent and independent pronouns that can be attached to verbs. The independent ones are as follows;
Tumblr media
And the dependent set are as follows;
Tumblr media
As you can see, the pronouns of Nuyate are actually fairly simple. A very easy singular/plural divide that follows through the entire chart with the hardest bit being that the first-person plural has an inclusive/exclusive division. Here’s what the dependents look like in practice;
Mouvanuki - I’m sick | Er uvanuki - I am sick
Souvanuki - You are sick | Ser uvanuki - You are sick
Nouvanuki - They’re sick | Ono uvanuki - They are sick
Wauvanuki - We (incl. you) are sick | Wan uvanuki - We (incl) are sick
Kheuvanuki - We (excl. you) are sick | Ukhe uvanuki - We (excl) are sick
Tovuvanuki - You’re all sick | Tov uvanuki - You are all sick
Zauvanuki - They’re all sick | Iza uvanuki - They are all sick
Tumblr media
Now when it comes to possessive pronouns, like the skulks the clan had a sense of alienability. You should know that what is and isn’t alienable can vary from clan to clan. For example in ThunderClan; all family is spoken as inalienable nouns while in ShadowClan, a mother can be referred to with alienability while a father is inalienable.
The suffix -ikh is the marker an inalienable noun.
Alienable -> Sor imel - your mouse Inalienable -> Sorikh kemesu - your child

Note
What would an elementary and intermediate college course of Spanish teach? I'm looking into taking these and I'm curious. Thanks!
So I'm not 100% sure how intensive these courses would be, but my guess is that you'd be in A1-A2 and probably up to B1 levels. In the US that’d be like Spanish 1 to Spanish 3 is my guess, though if it’s combined I’d say probably up to Spanish 2
Going based off your information, I assume you wouldn't get as far as subjunctive but you'd probably learn the following topics... though I’m not sure in what order:
pronouns
basic words
the alphabet
the basics of noun/number/adjective agreement
how to introduce yourself
greetings and goodbyes
basic question words (would also include the difference between dónde and adónde)
definite articles
indefinite articles
grammatical gender
basic nouns and plural rules
muy vs mucho/a
telling time
basic numbers, probably 1-10, 11-20, then up to 100, and then eventually probably like the hundreds 200-1000, nothing too intense but they really like to stress learning the hundreds because of some irregular ones like 500 and 700
colors
basic family members
days of the week, months of the year
basic countries and nationalities
basic professions
ser, ir, estar, ver, dar
ir + a + infinitive as a precursor to future tense
ser and estar will be a big thing forever
expressions with tener + birthdays with tener
the basics of regular verbs, -ar, -er, -ir conjugations
present tense
the irregular verbs in present tense, especially the -go verbs
basics of stem-changing verbs; E=>IE, E=>I, and O=>UE
saber vs conocer
gerund/progressive forms + progressive forms of irregular verbs
basic adjectives
locations and directions
a+el being al, and de+el being del
por and para at least the basics
use of hay as “there is/are”
using the infinitive forms
the basics of gustar and verbs like gustar; encantar, molestar, doler etc
basic parts of the body
preterite and imperfect
preterite and imperfect irregular verbs, as well as the -car, -zar, -gar, (and possibly -guar) verbs
the personal a
ordinal numbers [first, second, third]
demonstratives [this, that, these, those]
possessive pronouns [my/mine etc]
superlatives
better and worse
comparisons of equality and inequality
direct objects and direct object pronouns
indirect objects and indirect object pronouns, usually referencing gustar
possible direct + indirect objects
reflexives and reflexive pronouns
present subjunctive, maybe
Depending on how advanced of an intermediate course it is, you might also get the basics of commands and tú commands in particular with the irregular ones
You’ll also probably see adverbs rather than be taught them, that a lot of them end in -mente the same way English has -ly for many adverbs
You may also get haber and the basics of the perfect tenses
You may also expect to see the future and conditional tenses, though I would say that’s going more towards the advanced level because conditional leads into imperfect subjunctive, and trying to deal with the subjunctive in all its forms becomes a more advanced topic
You will also probably see things like que “that” and quien “who” or relative clauses and lo que but I don’t know if they would teach you that right away

HEAD TO THE DINING HALL let's go!!!
Tumblr media
Maeda, narrating - Am I even hungry?
Maeda - Hm… I’ll just grab something for in between periods…
Maeda - …Which means I won’t be hungry for lunch, but that’s whatever.
Maeda - Burn that bridge when I get to it.
//Maeda sits down at the table where the rest of his class has congregated.
Tsurugi - Hiya Maedaaaa!
Maeda - You seem like you’re in a good mood today, what’s up?
Tsurugi - …I was temporarily possessed by a very very enthusiastic spirit.
Tsurugi - But anyways!
Tsurugi - Are you cold?
Maeda - No, uh, just haven’t gotten around to taking my jacket off…
Tsurugi - I see, I see…
Tsurugi - There’s no snow out, but there’s frost all over; does it usually snow where you’re from?
Maeda - Uh…
Maeda - Yeah, actually... I always try to get a good jacket, and shoes that can handle the snow for winter.
Tomori - Ahhh… it snows a lot where I live, too.
Tomori - I think the snow is pretty, but once it’s gotten old, it’s such a inconvenience…
Tomori - I wouldn’t be upset if it didn’t snow, to be honest.
Tsurugi - You’re going home for the holidays, right, Tomori?
Tomori - Mhm… I’m really excited to see my mom and my sister again.
Tomori - How about you, Tsurugi?
Tsurugi - I’m going to see family, but I’m not going home…
Tsurugi - My parents got a place nearby, so I’m going to visit them,
Tsurugi - But I’m saving my holiday flight for Seollal, in January.
Tsurugi - I don’t know where I’ll be staying then… hm-hm~
Tsurugi - Well! I don’t know which house, it’s the same town for either option though.
Uehara - You haven’t been back to Korea in a while, right?
Tsurugi - Mhm…
Tsurugi - You, uh… you’re not going back to Italy for Christmas, right?
Uehara - Nah, not invited back this year.
Uehara - I wonder, if I don’t use my flight for a holiday, would they pay for tickets just because?
Uehara - Italy is nice in the summer…
Uehara - It’s so cold where my family lives in the winter.
Uehara - So, so, so cold…
Tsurugi - Hm-hmm~
Tsurugi - …Ue, if I grabbed an orange, would you have half? I don’t really want a whole orange.
~*~
Maeda, narrating - Everyone just dispersed back to their own conversations after that.
Maeda - I think everyone’s about done, so there’ll be a mass exodus to the classrooms now.
Maeda - I should grab something warm to drink before heading to class.

Hey!! Again I can't get enough!! I really appreciate you putting Actually time and effort into our asks! My ask! Can we get a Michael Myers (other SLASHERS) as a meaner more scary yandere?? Like just a more realistic darker version of them with a cute innocent S/O NSFW IF YOU WANT!! AGAIN NO RUSG
Hell ya!! NSFW: Blood, gore, implied sex and noncon.
MICHAEL MYERS
Whatever you did to catch this man's attention you're either one lucky bastard or one unfortunate SOB. Hes extremely possessive and in the first day of him showing you your his you'll be covered in hickies.
You can kick and scream all you want. He has you in his clutches and he needs you. You better learn how to behave. He doesnt like hurting you but will if you dont act nicely.
Friends? Murdered. Family? Pushed away. Any boyfriend/girlfriend? Killed 3 days ago. No one is allowed near you unless you're working or buying groceries. He does know when to let it go.
God forbid anyone flirt or bully you. They're tortured and killed. Only he can do that. Speaking of which his idea of flirting is stealing or murdering people for what he needs for you. That rich family down the street? Murdered and you got some nice shiny jewelry covered in blood.
Now he will wait for consent to fuck you. Hes not a complete monster and you're the only one he loves. But he will grope you, rub up against you and mark you however he pleases. When he kisses you he doesnt expect you to kiss back. Just sit back and take it. Hes still a dom but hes a bit cold. You talked to a cashier for too long and hes left you naked tied to the bed with a vibrator in for an hour.
All in all you're his little doll and hes never loved anyone like you. Just let me play with you Y/N, you'll enjoy it I promise.
JASON VOORHEES
He'd tear anyone to shreds to get to you. You remind him a bit of his mother, so sweet and kind and he wants you. He needs you. So everyone else is slaughter with blood and guts sprayed across the cabin and campgrounds as he carries you to his place.
He ties you up to a bed and a chair during the day so you can sleep at night. Hes very kind, despite slaughtering your friends. He'll treat you like a delicate bird or baby deer. Petting you softly and feeding you from his own plate.
Stay in Pamela's good graces. Mainly be nice to her boy! Dont do drugs and no escaping! If you try he wants hurt you. He'll put you into a timeout. Do it too many times and he'll bend you over his knee and spank you li km e a naughty child. So you're not in much danger.
He's very sweet to you once you get to know him but like Michael he refuses to let anyone come over or near you. He'll chase everyone away. You dont need them, Y/N! All you need is me. He loves to cuddle you. Sweet little pets and even kisses.
Hes more likely to take off the mask if you've earned his trust or promise kisses. Then he'll stay unmasked around you. But only you! He doesnt really make you work but he does appreciate if you clean house a bit.
He always makes sure to have consent before touching you any where other than your hair. He doesnt wanna upset you.
THOMAS HEWITT
Something about you caught his eye. And now here you are at dinner. With your dead friends seated on one side and the large man wearing you best friends face on the other.
Be kind. Dont insult them or itll lead to you being punished. Thomas already made clear that he wants you and he wants you alive so they wouldn't risk killing you but being forced to do hard labor and chopping your friends up for dinner isnt killing you.
He'll spoon feed you the stew made of people. And at dinner you're tied down until further notice. After that you'll be tied to Thomas's bed. He'll feel up on you and touch you no matter how much you squirm. He just cant believe a beautiful creature such as yourself is in his bed. Laying with him!
He likes to cuddle you a lot and he'll grind on you and hump you a ton. Hes never had a sexual outlet before so it's a common occurrence when he just masturbates over your naked body. He loves seeing the look on your face as he cums all over you.
He may actually fuck you without your consent. You're his right? His to take? And he loves you so much. He promises to make you feel good. Just let him in.
BUBBA SAWYER
The fact that you survived one dinner is enough for Bubba to make you his. He'll give you plenty of kisses straight off the bat. He makes sure you're fed and bathed. Usually you're tied up for these.
He doesnt talk so it hard to understand him but he likes to cuddle with you. Sometimes if you cut yourself or get cut he'll lap up the blood and sometimes he likes to bite you.
He can and will kill and eat your friends. If you try to run away or escape you leg or legs may be butchered or mutilated courtesy of Drayton telling Bubba that he needs to so you dont run away again.
Now he'll probably fuck you while you sleep or are so tired you dont know what's going on. He's not so great on consent but that's bc if his upbringing and not out of malice or need to prove your his.
Probably one of the more innocent ones and the only reason he harms you or does freaky shit is bc of his brothers. He likes to make you jewelry out of body parts or steal some from victims.
He'll have Drayton marry you too so you both can have kids together! And he wants lots of kids! He's so happy he found you!
BO SINCLAIR
You're tied up in the chair until you can behave yourself. You get bathroom breaks but only he can take you and hes right inside with you. He'll face the other way he just doesn't want you escaping.
He'll gag you if you keep making noise. He wont glue your lips together bc what if he scars them? You're his perfect little doll. He doesnt want you too injured. So stop struggling in those bindings Y/N. It wont help.
Within the first few days he'll be on top of you grinding and groping. Touching you wherever he can. He loves your body and he wants to make you feel good. Dont you wanna make him feel good too?
Hes aggressive though. He may love you but he wont hesitate to scream or yell at you if hes thinking you're acting like a bitch. Hell come back later being softer and kissing you.
He'll get you to marry him. How can you say no to him? He'll take care of you and your kids! Hes so excited to get his little nuclear family started! After the chair you'll be chained up in his room. Maybe he'll take you for a drive if your good. But hes another one to lock you down fully or cause it so you cant escape.
No he wont cut off your limbs! But maybe if you cant see the exit you wont be able to leave him. Remember even though he loves you he still gets off on your pain a bit.
VINCENT SINCLAIR
More or less Bo thought you'd be good for him and he locked you in the studio where Vincent spends all his time. At first he doesnt know what to do. He leaves you food and water and let's you use the restroom but ues not sure.... but you are really pretty.
Awkward cuddling. Usually when you're asleep he'll nuzzle up to you gently. He doesnt wanna wake you but he wants to be close to you. He'll start drawing you and soon he'll be enamoured with you.
During the day hes polite and kind and offers you things to keep yourself occupied. But at night he let's his fingers and lips wander wherever he wants. Usually you tire yourself out by crying or trying you escape. So you're really conked out by the time he starts to touch you.
He wont mutilate you if you try to escape no. He'll cripple you. He can just carry you where you need to go. He can help you with whatever you want! He can bring you food and water! You can have everything you've ever wanted! But you have to stay here with him.

Piggybacking off my post from yesterday
Allow me to add some possible context to the lines that could destroy us in season two
For this I’m picturing it as the lead up to Alex’s UE esque solo. Something reminds him of his parents. And he gets an anxiety attack. And this is all after a confrontation with Caleb!Nick where he says something about “ridding myself of the boy whe he’s of not further use to me” which brings back really bad memories of the last full conversation he had with his parents leading to the “no kid should ever be thrown away” line. And then his big emotional solo happens
Of course Willie’s soul breaking line is directed at Caleb. Full on the knees begging and crying here, the side of his head buzzing with light. Caleb naturally refuses and leaves Willie there wracked with sobs on the floor of the dark room
Here I’m thinking that it’s the anniversary of her mother’s death. That coupled with the whole “former crush being possessed” dealio leaves Julie feeling incredibly drained emotionally leading to the “it feels just like last time” line
Let’s say Caleb!Nick told Carrie everything. The plagiarism, the hotdogs, the ghost. She’s not upset. Just. Disappointed. And she says the line like it’s just one of her barbs at Julie and Flynn. Cruel and callous. No tears. Just disownment. And she joins Caleb feeling he’s the only one she can trust
What if Caleb tires of Nick? What if he decides Julie is the stronger target? What if Ray wakes up to find her gone and Nick passed out on the patio? While Nick is tearfully apologising for the hurt he’s caused Ray forgives him and just implores him to try and think of where Caleb might’ve gone using Julie as a meat suit
The lead up to Reggie’s own solo. Reminiscing on his life with his parents after finding out one of them recently died. He didn’t have a horrible life. But unless he actually approached them or he got hurt they didn’t really pay much attention to him. Leading to his “invisible existence” which he was ok with. But he just wishes they could stop the fighting for ten minutes and watch Star Wars with him
Either Caleb!Nick or Caleb!Julie says this to the boys. Obviously referring to his grand plan as a dark reprise to his secondary song in season one. Probably as the cliffhanger to episode eight. You know. When the shit really starts to hit the fan
Naturally this is Trevor apologising to the boys for plagiarising their works. Definitely a genuine apology. Could absolutely be made sadder by one or all of the ghosts flatly refusing him and leaving him to live with his soul crushing guilt
Not as sad as the others but here I’m imagining Carlos, half asleep, either Luke or Reggie or both fulfilling their new “older brother” roles and putting him to bed and him kind of just absentmindedly asking them if they could look for his mother. And of course they say yes because the alternative is letting him cry himself to sleep
Now. Imagine a recurring gag in season two is Luke and Julie trying to decide on nicknames for each other. Julies settled on beanie boy for Luke. But Luke has several in rotation for her, human wrecking ball, boss, butterfly, glitter girl. You know the usual. And they finally decide on “angel voice”. Then julies possessed by Caleb. And Luke figures out a way to free her. But at an incredibly steep cost. So he hugs her, holds her face in his hands, in an exact parallel to their scene in stand tall, says “goodbye angel voice. I’m sorry”. And let’s himself with willingly possessed by Caleb. Ending season two on the family reunion of all cliffhangers
A lot of these are dependant on. A. Lore. B. If ghosts can possess other ghosts like they can with humans. And. C. Should Netflix get their fucking act together and renew the sodding show. And even then any of these happening is a major long shot. But I really wanted to add some context to my previous post. So. Enjoy

For the Love of Shell - Chap 42
Tumblr media
Next chappie for those who are reading this!
Here it is from the beginning for those who want to start! Filled with smut my loves
Chapter Forty Two – Betrayal of the Son
By now the palace was now overrun with guards searching for the Daimyo. The sound of the clanging metal of their armor was almost deafening. It had taken Ue-Sama far too long to order the palace searched for Aurora’s liking. Since she had shown up at the palace this morning Ue-Sama had been acting very bizarre. Particularly the kiss he forced onto her after the tournament. He was planning something, she could tell and now with the Daimyo’s disappearance it seemed to solidify her speculation. Now Mikey, Donnie and herself were slipping silently through the palace on their own mission, one being done under Ue-Sama’s nose.
There was no sign of Ue-Sama when they pasted the dining room on their way to the lower levels. It was still in disarray with a few servants trying to clean up the damage. There was a knot forming in her stomach, she did not like this one bit. With the door to the basement in sight Donnie hurried forward and brought his giggles down over his eyes. His hand shot up and waved back signaling them of guards coming up the stairs. The three disappeared easily into the shadows waiting for their opening. With a loud clamor five more guards barreled up the stairs heading to the main hallway. Slipping silently down the poorly lit staircase to the basement and the dungeons, she noticed Mikey and Donnie staying close to her keeping her between them as they descended. They stopped at the first level scattering to cover more ground faster.
“Be careful, yell for us if you find anything or need help.” Donnie gazed down at her with a worried look while his large three fingered hand rested on her lower back.
“Will do.” With a half hearted smile she nodded to the two turtle brothers and ran in the opposite direction in search of any clue of the disappearance of the Daimyo and Splinter.
~~~~~~~~~~
Master Splinter groaned in discomfort as he came too. His skull felt like someone had cracked it open with a sledgehammer. He needed to rub his temples to release some of the pressure but found his arms immobile. In fact when he finally opened his eyes he found he was hanging from a brick wall in a dimly lit room by his wrists that were stretched painfully tight on either side of him. Due to the lack of height he was hanging suspended off the ground. His weight was pulling at his old limbs making the predicament even more excruciating.
A soft cough next to him alerted the old rat he wasn’t alone in his dilemma and his mind went to his dinner companion and the series of events that lead them to this dark musty room. They had been enjoying each other’s company about to start dinner when he tasted something foreign in his soup, something that wasn’t supposed to be there. Dropping his spoon his hands thrust forward disengaging the spoon from his friend’s hand toppling the bowl of soup with it.
Before he would warn the Daimyo about the unknown substance in their food they were attacked. Dark shadowy figured came from everywhere and converged in on them showing no mercy. They fought them as best they could but in the end there was too many and were knocked unconscious. Now in the present they found themselves at the mercy yet again of their captors.
“Splinter?” the groggy voice of the Daimyo hit his fury ears.
“Yes, my old friend I am here with you. It looks like we have found ourselves in quiet a predicament. I wonder who our host is?”
As if on cue a large hooded figure emerged from the shadows with bright red eyes glowing under the heavy hood.
“Who are you? Why have you done this?” The Daimyo scowled yanking on his confines. “Release us at once!”
Rough as gravel, a deep twisted laugh rumbled from the mysterious cloaked figure. The movements so smooth it seemed their captor floated across the room on air, stopping a few inches from the old rat. Two large scaled hands emerged from the large sleeves pushing back the hood.
“Draco!” Splinter hissed through clenched teeth.
“Yes you sniveling rat! How long I’ve waited for my revenge against you and this old fool. Years of planning and now my patience will be rewarded. I will take from you what you love the most in this life and rip ripe apart your son’s bodies using their bloody hollow shells as foot rests. And then after I’ve shown you their mutilated carcasses I will end you!” the red dragon spat at Splinter, his face mere inches from his.
The usual gentle features of the old ninjutsu master hardened and an ominous growl rolled from his lips, “You will not touch my sons.”
“Oh on the contrary you old fool, as we speak they are scattered around the grounds looking for you, two with that little bitch the young daimyo has his sights set on and your two eldest heading to the falls and right into my trap. I have several of my shadow minions at my disposal all ready to attack and dismember each and every one of your sons.”
“What of the woman?” the Daimyo quickly cut in, trying to pry a little more information out of Draco. “And why do you call my son young Daimyo?”
The dragons head snapped to the old man hanging from the wall just next to the giant rat, “Your son seems to have plans for her. He talks about some sort of power that she possesses that could help him. He covets your throne old man hoping having her at his side will solidify his place upon it. Either way it doesn’t matter. I will have my revenge then that brat can have his kingdom.”
The Daimyo’s eyes widened in shock, letting the dragon’s words roll over him. Again his wrists pulled at the metal shackles holding him to the wall. “M-my son……. Is behind this? How can that be?” the sorrow apparent in the old man’s voice trying desperately to hold onto the hope Draco was lying.
“Your son is an idiot; he couldn’t orchestrate this by himself. He is an overgrown child throwing a tantrum that he can’t have the throne right now. The woman is something new though, he fell for her a year ago when she quiet literally fell into your laps. But there is no way she would be persuaded to go along with his plans; she’s too smart for his games and won’t do anything to hurt you. He just refuses to see it. So she will need to be eliminated as well. Which is a shame really, someone with powers would be convenient to have on my side. The idiot already tried wooing her by kissing her after the tournament today but she rejected him. He’s too blind to see she only has eyes for his son, the one in blue, Leonardo is it?” Draco’s red eyes shifted to Splinter. “But that is neither here nor there now and makes no difference. None of them will survive this. I need your son compliant so a strong headed woman is out of the picture.”
“They will find us and foil your plans. You will not succeed.” Splinter smiled; with Aurora at his son’s sides once again they would defeat Draco and Ue-Sama. He was sure of it.
“We will find out now won’t we, because the party is about to begin.”
~~~~~~~~~
Aurora turned down another hallway searching the final group of rooms coming up with nothing, yet again. Each room she had checked her fingers skimmed over every nook and cranny for any hint of a hidden door. Someplace someone could hide two unwilling victims. Finishing with the last room she headed back to the stairs to meet up with Mikey and Donnie.
With her mind spinning with worry she didn’t hear the shadow ninja creep up behind her. By the time she sensed it’s presences it was too late. A hand reached out grasping her long hair pulling her back and down to the ground. Her shriek of surprise echoed through the halls reaching the sensitive ears of Donnie and Mikey but unfortunately they too were in their own battle for their lives. Surrounded by several dark shadowy ninjas Donnie reached for his com calling for his older brothers.
“Don?” the familiar calm voice of their leader came over the speaker on his shoulder.
“Leo we’ve been ambushed in the bowels of the palace. We need back up.” Donnie called into his com anxiously blocking a blow with his bo staff. “They came out of nowhere and have no faces! They look like shadows!”
Knee deep in the falls high above the palace Leo and Raph stopped in their tracks listening to their genius brother in distress. They had come up empty, no tracks or any kind of clues to the whereabouts of Master Splinter and the Daimyo, when Donatello’s frantic call came over their coms.
“Donnie are you alright? Where is Mikey and Aurora? Are they with you?”
After a few seconds Donatello came back over the com, his labored breath telling them it was imperative they hurry. “Mikey is just outside in the hallway with his own party of ninjas. And I don’t know where Aurora is but we did hear her scream a few minutes ago. We can’t get to her! Mikey!!!” then the com went eerily silent.
“Don! Donnie! Are you there?! Donatello!!” Leo felt his heart jump into his throat and looked to Raph with terror in his eyes. They were in trouble and needed their help.
Raph heard the fear in his brother’s voice making the already burning rage inside him increase to an uncontainable inferno. The grips on his sai tightened and he caught his brother’s eyes that held the same wild fury. Someone had kidnapped their father and now were attacking their two younger brothers and Aurora. But then like a light switch Leo’s demeanor changed and lunged forward tackling his larger brother into the water.
Bursting from the surface Raph tried pushing Leo from him, “What the shell Le…..oh!” his eyes immediately narrowed in on the kunai now rooted deep into the top of Leonardo’s shell. Leo had just saved his life for the thousandth time. Reaching up he pulled the offending item from his brother’s shell and they both scrambled to their feet pulling their weapons out. Just like Donnie had described them, they looked on in shock at the weird shadow figures surrounding them. There had to be at least 40 of them closing in on them fast and it didn’t seem like they wanted to play nice.
“Shell, looks like they’re not getting the back they need.” Leo growled readying his katana.
Raphael readied himself as three of the figures launched themselves at him bringing down their weapons on his waiting sai. With a grunt he took the brunt of the force faltering on the slimy rocks below the surface of the water.  “Looks like we might need that back up now.”
Reeling back Donnie swung his electrified bo staff forward connecting with two of the ninjas sending them flailing against the wall disintegrating like a puff of cigarette smoke in the wind. The last of his attackers were beside him but with expert balance his long leg shot up colliding with its head making it explode in a cloud of smoke. Without skipping a beat he headed out to help his little brother who was on the ground holding off three of the shadowy figures with his nunchaku.
“DONNIE?!” they both heard Aurora shriek from farther away then they’d like.
Mikey’s gaze snapped to Donnie and they both took action. With a swift kick of his legs Mikey sent the three assailants over his body crumbling to the ground. With the momentum of his legs coming down and his pelvis rolling up into the swing he was on his feet. Then Mikey and Donnie took care of the rest of the dark ninjas with a swift determination to get to their friend in trouble.
Taking off towards the sound of Aurora’s worried cry, they hurried through the halls in search of her. They could hear sounds of metal on metal and exasperated grunts from beyond the bend. Before they rounded the corner two of the shadowy ninjas came sailing out into view colliding with the wall. Taking the corner, they saw her pressed against the wall, eight figures on her ready to drive a tanto blade through her heart.
“A little help guys!” she cried out ripping a hand from one of the them punching it in the face.
They were on them in a second ripping Aurora’s attackers from her body one by one. Mikey lurched forward grabbing the blade poised for her heart and threw it down the empty hallway, the sound of the metal clanging across the ground echoed in the large halls.
Aurora took advantage of the distraction and placed her feet on the wall and pushed forward taking three of the ninjas with her. The back of their heads slammed into the hard surface of the wall behind them making them disappear beneath her momentum. She caught herself before she fell to the floor getting her feet under her. “They’re skilled but break easily. I’ve never seen anything like them; it was like I was fighting shadows of smoke. What the hell are these things?” Aurora groaned picking up her blades taking care of another ninja.
Donnie electrocuted the last one ending their current fight. Mikey went to Aurora making sure she was alright. His eyes moved over her body assessing damages, touching and pushing at her skin.
Her fingers found his quickly easing his overzealous attention to a halt. “I’m fine Mikey.” Aurora tried her best not to be too cold with the two brothers but didn’t want to act like them being together in this moment felt right. She couldn’t let herself get used to their presences; this was a temporary mission to save the Daimyo and Master Splinter. After this was over Leo would no doubt end this as well.
“They put up quite a fight, we must be getting close.” Donnie calmly stated using his goggles to scan for heat signatures on the level they were still on.
“Agreed, let’s move to the lower level.” Aurora moved around Mikey who was still looking at her hopeful. His baby blues tore at her soul, she wanted to tell him all would be alright but time was of the essence and they needed to move.
The three of them descended to the lowest level of the palace, this time sticking together. The silence that hung around the dungeon was a bit unsettling. No guards what so ever nor any prisoners. The uneasy feeling within each of them grew. This was too easy.
“Shell!” Donnie broke the eerie calm. “I called Leo for back up a while ago; he should have been here by now.” His fingers flew to his com calling for his older brother. No response came so Donnie called again this time for Raphael. Still nothing, a deafening silence that made the already chilly dungeon seem suddenly colder. “I don’t like this.”
~~~~~~~~~
Draco landed another blow to Splinters jaw continuing his unrelenting assault on the old rat. With each strike the metal chains moaned from the sudden movement of the body it held. Blood was running down the dark fur of the old sensei’s mouth but showed no sign of discomfort.  The Daimyo beside him pleaded with the large dragon to stop his assault but if fell on deaf ears as another hit connected with Splinters gut.
Without warning several dark cloaked ninjas appeared behind the angry dragon. His attacks ended as one whispered in his ear. The smug smile slipped from his face into a frustrated scowl.
“They’re down here already?! They took out how many of you? SIMPILTONS!! Yes, send more to stop them! I can’t have them ending this plan just as it begins!” as quickly as they came the ninjas vanished into the shadows leaving the dragon with his two helpless prisoners. Reaching to the wall he grabbed the cloak he had removed when he started his assault on Master Splinter and swung it back around his shoulders lifting the hood to conceal his face once more. “You’re lucky I have other things to attend too you old fools, but I will be back to finish this. I have some turtle flesh to filet.” His wicked eyes flashed and retreated out the hidden door in the wall leaving them alone.
“My friend! Are you alright?” the daimyo immediately called to his battered friend. A soft cough alerted him to fact the old rat was still in fact breathing. The chains creaked when Splinter shifted uncomfortably spitting out a mouthful of blood.
“Am I my friend, a little worse for wear but I am alive. Do not worry my sons will free us, they will stop this madness.”
“They have too.” The daimyo started. “If they try and use the war staff without proper training they will bring upon destruction to this dimension and all who reside here.”
~~~~~~~~~~
The pull for air made his lungs burn as Leo fought the many hands that held his body submerged under the current of the river feeding the massive waterfall several feet down stream. There was far too many of these shadow ninjas for Raph and himself to defeat. They seemed to come out of nowhere like the never ending flow of water they fought in.
It had been almost an hour since Donnie had called them for help and they were ambushed on top of the waterfall. He hoped all three of them were alright. They had to be, he didn’t know what he would do if he lost his two younger brothers and Aurora. But the way things were looking they might lose him, there were so many on top of him keeping his head below the water drowning him. The strength was leaving him as the lack of oxygen to his brain began to affect his dexterity, he was losing this fight.
~~~~~~
Aurora could feel it, something was horribly wrong. More wrong then what was happening in the dungeon with Donnie, Mikey and herself fighting off an infinite flow of these damn ninja. Every cell in her body was on alert, something else was happening, something was happening to Leonardo and Raphael.
“Guys!” she screamed over the thunder of clanging metal and grunts. “We have to get to Leo and Raph! Something’s wrong!” Blocking another tirade of attacks Aurora flipped up landing just behind the shadows slicing through them with her katana.
As Donnie fought his goggles scanned the walls for false walls and air drafts. They had to be down here judging by the massive assault they were receiving. Then something flashed in his goggles when he turned to deliver a shock from his bo staff. Quickly turning back he saw two warm bodies behind the wall, a large form and a smaller one hanging midair.
“There!” Donnie screamed pointing to the small wall just a few feet from where Aurora was.
Immediately Aurora sprang for the wall feeling with her hands for anything to open the hidden door all the while keeping the growing mass of ninjas as bay.  Out the corner of her eye she saw the blade gliding through the air aimed for her throat, determined to hit it’s mark with extreme prejudice. Before it could find its target the hilt of Mikey’s nunchaku stopped its momentum pushing back the assailant.
“I got your back angel cakes!” the orange banded turtle smiled at her while taking down anther ninja with his band hands.
The battle in the dingy basement was deafening, she couldn’t hear herself think. A shove behind her sent her sprawling against the cold brink of the wall she was searching. But with a stroke of luck the hit brought her fingers in contact for the latch for the door making the brick door shift open revealing the entrance to the hidden cell.
The heavy scrapping of the brick door opening brought the Daimyo’s and Spinsters eyes to the entrance of their confinement.  Expecting the tall hooded dragon to appear they were surprised by two spinning blades followed by Aurora as she fought her way in.
Her eyes snapped to the old men hanging on the wall. The state Master Splinter was in sent her blood boiling. Battered and broke he was bleeding from several parts of his old furry body; someone had worked him over pretty good. Thankfully the Daimyo looked unharmed for the most part besides a busted lip and his white hair askew. “Donnie! Mikey!” she bellowed ending the five ninja currently before her. Whoever had hurt Master Splinter would pay, would pay dearly.
And one time he did
The final part of  Five times Caleb didn’t let the Mighty Nein take care of him when he was sick… (part 5) This got away with me somewhat, so here’s 10k of feverish Caleb and concerned Caduceus.
Whole thing is posted here for easier navigation if you like.
Of all the times to get sick, for once his timing is not too bad. The Mighty Nein are between jobs and have a few days to spend in the Xorhaus. Caleb Widogast had been planning to spend them in the library catching up on his studies.
It seems that the moment he opens the book and summons Frumpkin onto his lap as a reading companion, the scraping soreness that has been in the back of his throat for days becomes a lancing pain every time he swallows, forcing him to cough and clear it nearly constantly. His nose is quickly too stuffed for him to breathe through. He swears to himself then feels a rush of gratitude that this did not happen while they were on the road. He isn’t sure he could accurately throw a fireball in this state, let alone anything more complex.
Despite the fire he can’t seem to get warm. A blanket over his lap helps a little and his cat helps a lot but shivers still trickle down his limbs with increasing frequency. He is going to have to get a hot drink or something for his throat, or he’ll never be able to concentrate on this transcription.
He intends it to be a very short interruption, to get back to his reading chair and the warmth of the fire as soon as possible. Upon standing, he realises he is dizzier than he had thought. Descending the stairs to the kitchen requires keeping his hand firmly on the wooden banister.
The kitchen is mercifully quiet and empty apart from a familiar tall figure with a shock of bright pink hair, occupied with peeling and coring apples. The room is as still as a painting. Low light from the enchanted baubles overhead blesses the fruit with a sheen like precious stones.
Caleb feels a swell of emotion at the scene. It’s the little things; Beau and Fjord’s boots kicked off by the door, a novel open face-down on the table, a half finished glass of tea. The house is warm and lived-in and safe. It is home. He’d never thought he’d live somewhere like this again. Some feeling rises in his throat and he swallows against it.
That slight sound is enough to prompt Caduceus to turn. The same light illuminates him from behind, an improbable furry angel.
“Mr Caleb?”
It seems Caduceus doesn’t need to touch Caleb to gauge the man’s fever. The moment he walks into the kitchen, the firbolg looks up and eyes him with considerable concern.
“Oh my, that’s not good at all.” He says, by way of greeting.
“Hm?” Caleb manages. “Oh, I just came to get a glass of water.” As if on cue, he starts coughing again. Even to him it sounds harsh and unpleasant.
“No, no, come here.” Caduceus approaches and leans down to look Caleb over carefully.
“You’re really very warm. I think you have a temperature.” He says gently. “You should be resting.”
“Perhaps a little, but I have a lot to do today, I am perfectly ok to keep working on my spells.”
That is all very well but he finds the world swimming at the edges; the firbolg blurs to a rose-edged smudge until Caleb can scrub a hand over his eyes. He manages to find the edge of the table with an outstretched hand and lever himself onto a chair. It feels good to sit down. The short walk downstairs has made his legs and back ache. He looks up guiltily to see Caduceus standing over him, eyebrows raised.
“Caleb,” those pink sapphire eyes are turned on him with their full force of kind persuasion. “I know what’s normal for humans and I know you can’t be comfortable with your temperature so high. Let me give you a spell and I’ll make you some tea.”
Actually that does sound like a good idea. He nods in surrender. “Yeah. Yeah, okay. Thank you.”
Caduceus rests one of his hands on Caleb’s shoulder and casts healing word. Caleb knows that spell doesn’t require contact, but finds himself grateful for it nonetheless.
“Spells are not actually too good for common illnesses.” The firbolg says apologetically. Caleb knows that too. “Give it a second to kick in.”
So he sits and waits while his friend boils the kettle and selects pinches of ingredients from the wall of dark jars. He endeavours to wait without making a fuss, but the spell seems to have made the congestion in his nose shift in a way that sets him sneezing. With his handkerchief firmly over his nose and mouth he manages to smother the sound to a strangled “–ngkt!” The price of the quiet is a bolt of pain through his throat.
“Ah –ngkt!” And again.
“Bless you.” Not too quiet to escape Caduceus’ notice, then.
He nods his thanks and doubles immediately with another sneeze.
“CHssh-ue!” Neither quiet nor polite, but it doesn’t hurt quite as much.
“Bless you!” Caduceus calls over his shoulder. “So, some upper respiratory symptoms with the fever, yes? Let me see what I can find.” He adds a sliver of gnarly-looking root to the teapot and swirls it thoughtfully.
“Now, will you come and drink it with me? I could use some company.”
Caleb swallows. He should be reading, he should be working on that new spell, he shouldn’t be wasting everyone’s time, he should-  Who is he kidding? His vision is too blurry to read and he is shivering harder now.
“Ja. Yes. That would be nice.”
He allows himself to be led to Caduceus’ rooftop dwelling.
It is warmer here, magically heated in the same way as his native Cemetery. The air has a pleasant, earthy smell and the captured sunlight from emanating from enchanted globes is easier on his eyes than the bright lamps in his library.Caduceus’ huge oak tree stands proud, it’s roots curving into the base of the tower like possessive fingers, creating inviting nooks and crannies perfect for resting. The firbolg leads him to one where there are cushions and a low table to place the tea set. The angle of the trunk invites him to slump against it.
He sneezes again, finishes with a groan. “Ghh. When is this going to stop?”
“When you’ve had enough rest to let your body heal.” Caduceus says sagely.
 It isn’t what Caleb wants to hear. The wizard realises he is still hoping his companion might  have some magic up his sleeve to just get this over with, so he can get back to his usual routine. For him to just take all the pain away. It’s a childish urge, but a powerful one.
He settles for sipping the tea. It’s good; spicy and hot enough that he can feel it going down and radiating warmth into his tight chest. A hint of honey coats his throat, taking the tickle away for now, and he thinks he might be able to breathe through his nose again soon.
Caduceus is smiling at him, head tilted in interest as he holds his own cup.
“S’good.” Caleb tells him, slurry with tiredness.
“I’m glad.” Caduceus says. ”Are you still feeling chilly?”
“Ja.” Caleb murmurs. “Can’t seem to get warm.”
“That I can do something about.” Caduceus smiles. He disappears for a moment into his shack, and returns with an armful of thick blankets. He settles them over Caleb’s lap, where they provide a comforting weight. “Is that better, darling?”
Caleb nods.
 “Now, just sit quietly there and drink that. I’m going to do some work around the garden, but you call if you need me, okay?”
Caleb nods. He manages to sit long enough to finish the tea, then lets himself slump until he is laying on the cushions and looking up at the shifting patterns of light through the canopy.
He must have dozed off, because he wakes feeling truly horrible. He hears a familiar, deep voice asking him a question. He cracks his eyes open and the light seems to sear through his skull.
He goes to answer, sneezes thickly against the blankets.
“Wildmother bless you, Caleb.” Caduceus murmurs fondly and reaches to rub the man’s back. His fingers pause and then migrate up to the back of his Caleb’s neck and a frown deepens on his face. “Whoah, hey, your fever’s way up. I think you need to be in bed, hmm?”
“Far.” Caleb despises the whine in his own voice, but his limbs feel like lead and the stairs back to his room are steep.
“My room is right here.”
Caleb’s pupils go big when he realises what his friend is implying.
“I couldn’t possibly-” he tries to say, but his fever-addled tongue can only manage a mush of Zemnian and common that doesn’t make any sense at all.
The Firbolg nods sagely, as though he has made an excellent point, and adds “Yes, I think I’d better pick you up. Just for a moment.”
“Wait- please- oop-”
Caleb’s  limbs are bundled from under him. Caduceus cradles him close to his chest with one arm under his knees and the other to keep his head from lolling too painfully. Caleb’s vision lurches at the sudden movement and so does his stomach, and he wonders if he might throw up, or pass out, or both. Maybe Caduceus hears the dragging gasp that provokes, because he stands still and holds him tighter, presses his head into his chest and strokes through his hair for comfort.
“There, easy now. I’ve got you. I think…” he pauses to open the door to his little hut with one hip, “that if you’re feeling badly enough to let yourself be carried, doesn’t that mean you deserve to be carried? Just a little?”
Caleb doesn’t reply, just tries to concentrate on the flood of sensation that is being lifted, being held. He is freezing, he is shivering so hard in Caduceus’ arms that he can hear his own teeth chatter. In response the firbolg holds him a little tighter.
A gentle impact as Caduceus sits down on the bed, and Caleb is shifted from his friend’s grasp onto a firm, low mattress. Compared to the bodyheat of a moment ago, the sheets are cold and unwelcoming, sparking soreness on his over-sensitive skin. He grits his teeth so as not to seem ungrateful but a convulsive chill chases along his limbs all the same.
“Oh, you’re really shivering.” He hears Caduceus say. “Come here, sweetheart.”
He is gathered up again and the blessed warmth is back. He curls into it like Frumpkin finding a spot of sunlight in winter. Caduceus manages to settle himself to sitting, with his human friend curled against his chest and supported with one long arm around his back.
Caleb wants to rest there in Caduceus’ arms, he doesn’t want to move ever again, but his stuffy nose is still so ticklish and the change in position has only made it worse. He needs to turn his head away, needs to do something before he sneezes all over his friend. He squirms weakly, trying to find a handkerchief from his pocket, and whines under his breath when his fingers react with fumbling slowness.
“What is it?” Caduceus’ voice is soft and concerned.
“Wait, I have to-” He gestures helplessly to his running nose then bucks into a sneeze against Caduceus’ chest. It’s wet and painful and deeply embarrassing. He feels blood race up his neck in a chaotic blush and he keeps his eyes closed as if they can pretend that didn’t just happen.
“Oh! Bless you!”
“Sorry- excuse me- CHssh-ue! CHssh-ue! ...m’sorry,” he manages. He doesn’t know if it’s for the mess or for falling ill in the first place.
“Trust me,” Caduceus actually laughs, “I’ve seen worse than a few sneezes. Bless you-” he adds preemptively as Caleb winds up for another. “There, are you done?”
Caleb sniffles and shrugs. “Ja. Gott. I’m so sorry.”
“Hey. It’s okay. It happens. I’d rather have that than blood. Come on, let’s get you into bed.”
“S’cold…” Caleb actually pouts a little.
“It won’t be, look-”
Caleb feels a whisper of magic, recognises distantly that Caduceus has used some spell to warm the bedsheets for him. He could have done that himself, should have thought to try it, if he had any spells left in him. So stupid…
It’s much better. This time he allows himself to be bundled over, lets Caduceus pull the blankets up over his shoulders and tuck them in around him. When was the last time someone tucked him in…? It doesn’t bear thinking about, so he doesn’t. He is so, so ready to sleep but Caduceus is nudging him, trying to push something into his hand.
“Hmmf?”
“One more minute, then you can sleep. Blow your nose first, sweetheart, or you’ll regret it later.”
“Nein.” That would involve raising his head and some modicum of effort. Ugh.
“Trust me.” And he does trust Caduceus, so he does so. Then he falls into thick sleep as though a rug has been pulled out from underneath him.
…………………………………………..
Caleb doesn’t sleep for long -One hour thirteen minutes says the part of his brain that never stops counting- and it feels like forever or no time at all. The dreams that came were hot and black and chaotic. He is glad to wake and be out of them.
“Hmmm, let’s have a look at you,” a rumbling murmur from a familiar bass voice. He feels the weight of Caduceus settling next to him on the bed. The Firbolg presses the back of his hand to Caleb’s forehead and nods, his expression sympathetic but not worried. There is a little tickle of magic, possibly some sort of diagnostic spell that Caleb never bothered to learn, and his friend nods.
“Yeah, you’re gonna be fine. Looks like you just have a bad cold.” He sighs fondly and amends this to, “a really bad cold, poor thing. Can you sit up and drink some tea for me?”
Caleb obeys passively, though levering himself up to sitting is an effort that tires him out. It’s hard to drink hot tea when he feels so hot himself. He does so partially because he’s seen the healing powers of Caduceus’ tea first hand and partially because his friend would be incredibly hurt if he turned it down. So he sips, coughs a little, snuffles helplessly through a blocked nose.
He has to put the mug down in a hurry to sneeze hard into the crook of his elbow.
“Bless you, Caleb. Hmm, you managed to get yourself really sick sweetheart. You need to eat more, and sleep more, too.”  Caduceus says, reaching to rub his shoulders afterward. “How are you feeling now? Anything I can do?”
“I’m okay.” Caleb manages shakily. “Just hot. And achy.”
“Yeah. I know you’re really warm but I’m not going to cool you too much, you need the fever to burn the virus off, okay? It’ll break soon and you’ll feel so much better.”
Ja. Caleb knows this intellectually, but hearing ir  in that deep, soft voice is very reassuring when he feels like his skin is on fire. With a little prompting, he finishes the tea and lies down again.
“That’s it. Try to get back to sleep. That’s what you need right now.” Caduceus encourages.
This time it takes a while. He hears Caduceus leave the shack and can track the little sounds of his working in the garden outside. Caleb feels very close to sleep but instead he lies and lies there with his eyes closed, his thoughts racing unpleasantly. He summons Frumpkin and the cat tries to take his customary position on Caleb’s chest but the weight makes his clogged lungs work too hard. Frumpkin on his lap or his legs is too heavy and hot. Frumpkin not touching him is unbearably lonely. Frumpkin’s purring makes his head ache but the silence is no better. Caleb tosses and turns miserably, bleeding heat into the atmosphere for an hour and a half before sleep finally claims him.
……..
It is hard to judge the time without a sunset, but when Caduceus’ body feels like he has been working for a few hours and his chores are done, he makes his way to the shack to check up on his guest. The fever heat and stuffy air of sickness are tangible as soon as he opens the door. The wizard is sprawled in sleep on the low mattress with his limbs splayed and the blankets kicked off. His cat is as near as he can be without touching. Evidently the chills have passed and his temperature is rising again. It should be due to break soon, if Caduceus is any judge.
 The human man is flushed under his freckles. One arm is pillowed under his head and the hand is turned upward but clenched and tense even in sleep. His wrists look impossibly delicate, the tendons in his arms standing out like cords, while the multitude of scars stand out in vivid white. Caduceus is bony himself but he has a layer of fur and lean rangy muscle with it. Caleb just looks like he could use a good meal.
He says, “Hey there Mister Caleb,” to judge how deeply the man is asleep. No answer. Must be pretty deep. That’s good. Still, he mustn't get too cold, no matter how he feels, or his body will just crank his temperature higher, so Caduceus finds the thinnest sheet he has and drapes it over the man.
Caleb does stir at this, trying weakly to push it off.
“Okay, okay, but it’s there if you need it, alright?” He murmurs.
Caleb maybe nods, maybe it’s a twitch as he falls back into whatever dream has his eyes flickering behind their lids.
He’s not in any danger and he is as comfortable as Caduceus can make him, so that will have to do for now.
He leaves the sleeping wizard and pads softly down to the shared space to greet the rest of the Nein.
They are gathered in the kitchen, some eating and others just keeping company. It is so, so nice to come down to them, it’s like having a family.
Jester raises her head and gives him a great big smile. “Caduceuuuuus!  Where have you been all day? I found the soup you left though, it was really good!”
“I’m glad.” He tells her, then explains, “Caleb’s not feeling too well, so I’ve been looking after him a little.”
“Oh.” Jester’s eyes go big with worry. “Is he okay?”
“Yeah, what’s going on?” Fjord echoes. The others turn their heads. Nott tenses like she’s ready to spring up the stairs to her boy’s side.
“Oh, he’ll be fine.” Caduceus reassures them. “Just a nasty cold, but he has a fever with it that’s making him pretty uncomfortable. He’s in my bed sleeping it off.”
That news causes an amused clamour when Beau blurts, “and he told you?” at the same time as Jester’s- “he let you-?” and Nott’s outraged, “he didn’t tell me?!”
 “Seriously Caduceus,” Jester adds “did you, like, drug him or something? I really need to go see if he’s okay right now.”
“No, no.” It is very unusual for Caduceus to be firm but he is now. He actually raises his voice just a touch and holds up a hand to stop the enthusiastic teifling in her tracks. “What he needs is rest and for you lot not to bother him. If he gets too much attention he’s just gonna feel guilty and try to get up.”
“That’s true, actually.” She sits down in defeat.
Even Nott shrugs in agreement. “If you’re sure it’s just a cold? And you’ll let us know if he needs anything from us?”
Caduceus puts a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Hey. You know I will.”
So that’s that.
Caduceus takes the time to eat some of the soup he made earlier and also heats a bowlful to bring up for his patient. He also brings some more tea and a glass of the fruit juice he knows Caleb is fond of. He has to set down the tray to quietly open the door. Even then it rattles loudly, but that doesn’t matter because the wizard is already awake.
……………………………..
His dreams are always awful, but these are worse. He knows he’s dreaming, because nothing makes any sense, but the usual combination of smoke and flames and guilt is heightened by the physical feeling of burning up. He wakes enough to make out the walls of the room wavering as though in a heat haze and falls straight back into a dream where the space gets smaller and smaller. Something is wrapped around him, binding him tight, holding his arms still so that Ikathon can cut them open-
Caleb wakes from falling, gasps as though smacked into the mattress from a great height.
He sits instinctively to make it easier to breathe as he coughs and coughs and coughs. His chest hurts ferociously and he is absolutely soaking in sweat.
As his vision clears, he realises the blankets had wrapped around one of his arms and his struggling had pulled it taught. He unwinds it and feels where the cloth has pressed ridges into his flesh. Every inch of his skin feels itchy and dirty and wrong.
The door clicks open quietly but he still jumps like he’s been slapped.
“Oh, hey sweetheart, you’re awake.” Caduceus' voice is steady and gentle.
Caleb swallows guiltily as he remembers where he is. He has made such a mess of Caduceus’ bed, he is disgusting and he’s surely overstayed his welcome. The Firbolg must have come to ask him to leave-
“Hey, hey, leave that alone, hmm? There’s no need for that.” Caduceus says suddenly.
For what?
Caleb follows his friend’s gaze and realises his wrists are crossed so that he can scratch compulsively at both forearms at once. He must have been doing it for a while; he can feel the soreness now and see his scars standing out like spilled candle wax against reddened skin. He lowers his hands.
“That’s it.” Caduceus encourages with a smile.
“...dreaming.” He manages. His voice is a wreck.
Caduceus nods. “Just a dream though, you’re right here in the Xorhaus with me now.”
Caleb doesn’t need telling that. He is quite capable of orienting himself after a nightmare. He has been doing it nearly every night for years, in fact. But it’s nice to hear someone else say it. It’s nice, too, when the firbolg comes to sit beside him on the bed and takes his chin in one hand, tilting his head slightly to look him over. Caduceus leans his cheek onto Caleb’s forehead to compare and nods, satisfied.
“Looks like your fever broke. That’s good. How are you feeling?”
Caleb shrugs. It’s true, he doesn’t feel hot any more, he just feels wrung out. He feels like he has been run over by a cart and left in the rain.
“Pretty rough, I bet.” Caduceus answers for him. “Poor thing, you look exhausted still.”  His big hands smooth over Caleb’s back, lift his hair from his neck and begin to rub the ache from his muscles. “Is that okay?
Caleb nods. It’s more than okay. He sniffles thickly and tries to sit still but he really needs to blow his nose. Caduceus notices at once, passes him a handkerchief and moves away to collect the things he’d brought up with him. Blowing makes Caleb need to sneeze and he doesn’t want to because he knows it’ll scrape his throat raw. He sniffles again instead and scrubs underneath his nose with the heel of his hand. He feels beyond pathetic.
Caduceus returns with a glass of juice and offers it. “It would be good if you could drink something.” He prompts, “You’ve lost a lot of fluid in a short time.”
“Feel like I am a fluid.” Caleb manages a weak smile. “Sorry about your bed.”
“Never mind that. Sheets can be washed.” Caduceus says easily. “But what about you? You could go down to the spa and have a bath? I could help you, if you’re not up to walking just yet.”
Caleb considers this as he drains the glass. It would be good to be clean but there is a distinct swim at the edges of his vision when he turns his head too fast. His legs feel far too heavy for walking anywhere just now.
“Maybe later...” He says.
“That’s fine, sweetheart. Don’t worry about that right now.”
So he doesn’t. That's about all the conversation Caleb has in him, so he lies back down again. He feels Caduceus take the pillow from him briefly and manhandle him to one side to replace the sheet underneath him with a dry one. He accepts a clean shirt too and manages to wrangle it over his own head. The effort has him ready to fall asleep again and he doesn’t want to, isn’t ready for the dreams to start all over again. Frumpkin senses this. The cat paces up and down at the foot of the bed, giving voice to a low, miserable mew.
Caduceus reaches to pet Frumpkin and then looks up at Caleb, questioning. Caleb was okay until then, honestly. He was just fine. But something about his friend’s honest, compassionate gaze, an expression of care and concern that is for him, whether he deserves it or not…. A lump forms in his throat and he feels tears rise like a tide. He swallows, shakes his head, presses his eyes firmly closed so they don’t spill out. Ridiculous.
“Do you want me to come sit with you for a bit?” Caduceus says softly.
Caleb nods. He doesn’t open his eyes again but he feels the weight of a lanky firbolg settle beside him, then he feels a warm, steady hand smoothing his hair from his brow and cool, dry lips pressing a kiss to the crown of his head.
Caduceus lies down next to him, a little way away at first. Caleb isn’t feeling good with words right now, but he rolls over and sort of snuggles backwards into Caduceus’ orbit until his friend takes the hint and closes the gap. One arm drapes over him and comes to rest lightly on his arm.
“Is that okay? Not too much?” A bass whisper behind his ear.
“It’s okay. Thank you.” Caleb affirms.  “Good. That’s nice. I’d like to try another spell, then do you think you could go back to sleep for a little?”
Caleb nods assent and feels the cool whisper of Caduceus' magic course through him. It doesn’t do much for his stuffy head but it takes the edge of the aches and relaxes his nerves somewhat. Perhaps that’s the placebo effect of knowing someone is making an effort on his behalf. Whichever it is, Frumpkin seems to approve. The cat settles in littlest-spoon position in front of him, purring like an engine. That is all Celeb needs to send him back to sleep.
……….
Caleb wakes groggily. His impeccable sense of time tells him that it is morning; he has slept the whole night in Caduceus’ bed. He does feel better for it; his sinuses are hot and achy, his throat is raw and his lungs tight, but he no longer feels feverish. He sits up on one elbow and rubs tentatively under his nose, trying to dull the ticklish feeling. It doesn’t work and he smothers his face against his forearm to sneeze once, twice, three times in miserable succession.
“Bless you.” A familiar voice from the other side of the room, scratchy and worried. Not Caduceus- just Nott. The goblin woman is sitting criss-cross applesauce at the end of the mattress, apparently waiting for him to wake. At the sudden motion she looks up, big yellow eyes meeting his for a second before he sneezes again.
“Thadk you,” Caleb says thickly. “Hallo Nott.”
While he recovers, she crawls up to his side of the bed and inspects him closely. “‘Deucey said you were better, but you look like shit.” She says mournfully. “I missed you.”
“I missed you, too.” He says honestly. It has only been 24 hours but he is still not entirely used to her leaving his side. The fact she let him out of her sight and into Caduceus’ care says a great deal about how safe they both feel in this group. He adds, “trust me, I am feeling a lot better than yesterday. Caduceus gave me some tea and a spell for the fever. Now I just feel like I have a cold.”
“Okay then. Caduceus had to go out, but he says you should have some more tea when you wake up. I could bring it for you...?” It’s a question. She is half expecting him to refuse or at least make it himself.
To her surprise, Caleb nods gratefully. “Yes please, that would be nice. Thank you, Nott. Do you think you could bring my book as well? Then we could sit together.”
Of course she can.
By the time Caleb actually makes it down from the tower it is midday. Caduceus returns and checks him over before allowing him out of bed, which Caleb tolerates with as much grace as he can. His head feels like it’s plugged with cotton and the cough has gotten more persistent, but he feels better in himself. With a few spare handkerchiefs tucked into his pocket and Frumpkin as a warm weight around his shoulders, he feels ready to return to his usual routine.
He runs into the Jester in the dining room. Her exotic sapphire skin looks out of place among the homely pots and pans. She wears an apron and an expression of contentment as checks on something sweet-smelling in the oven. She straightens as he walks in.
“Hey, Cay-leb!” Her accent gives his name that sing-song quality that means he can never be sure if she’s teasing him. She dusts her hands on her apron and crosses to him.
“Should you even be up? Caduceus said you had a pretty high fever and you shouldn’t get a fever with a cold, you know, unless you’re really run down. Let me feel-” She reaches out her hands for him.
“Jester-” he holds up a hand in warning and manages to turn his head and smother three sneezes into the crook of his arm. It makes his head spin and when his vision clears Jester is laughing at him, but fondly.
“Bless you, Cayleb!”
He laughs too, and doesn’t duck this time when she catches his face in both hands and frowns at him. He feels a blush race up his neck when she smoothes a thumb over his cheekbone.
“Well, I don’t think you have a fever now. Honestly it’s kind of hard to tell because I run hot, but you look okay. For you.”
“Danke, Jester.”
“You should probably have a bath, though. You’re pretty stinky right now.”
Okay, he is fairly sure she is teasing him. A bath sounds really good though. His back aches from laying for so long and the steam might loosen the congestion that makes him sound like he’s speaking through concrete.
“Hey, you go put your things down and I’ll run it for you. Go on.”
“I can- he begins but Jester gives him a stern look and he shrugs, relenting, “Ja. Okay. Thank you. That would be nice.”
The bath is indeed excellent. Something in the bubbles Jester has put in it makes him sneeze ticklishly, startling Frumpkin every time, but then he would probably be sneezing anyay. He soaks for nearly an hour, feeling the warmth seep into his bones.
As he towelling his hair dry afterwards there is a knock on the door.
It’s Beauregard. “You naked?”
“Nein, I am dressed now.” He affirms. “Come in.”
She slouches against the doorframe, eyeing him through the steam.
“Hey, so I, uh, heard you weren’t feeling well. You look okay now though, so that’s good I guess.” She spreads her hands, awkward as ever, but Caleb can see past her gruffness to genuine good-will. “But, uh, just kind of wanted to say if you ever need anything from me, all you gotta to do is ask, you know?”
Even yesterday he might have brushed her off. Today her voice is still a little loud and makes his head hurt, but it also touches him.
“What Beau said.” That’s Fjord’s voice. He comes to stand behind her and nods at Caleb. “Even when we’re not fighting anything, you still gotta keep yourself healed up, alright.”
“Ja. Okay. Point taken. Thank you.”
They hover for a moment until Fjord suggests, “Why don’t you come upstairs. I don’t know what Caduceus cooked but it smells real good.”
The dining room is bright with magical lamps. Caduceus is setting out bowls for everyone, Nott and Yeza are already seated and chatting fondly. Yasha is stoking the fire. He knows it’s not for her benefit, with her barbarian blood, but for his, and feels the chill at his limbs lift as soon as he reaches the threshold. Fjord, Jester and Beau take their places at the table at once with a bustle of cutlery and chinking of glasses that makes his sensitive head swim.
It’s very loud in there, very busy, and he is not ready for the weight of all their eyes on him. He honestly doesn’t feel hungry. Whatever good smells Fjord was enjoying, Caleb can’t detect them through his stuffy nose and he knows every swallow will hurt his throat.
He feels sniffly and gross and vulnerable and unfit for company. His instinct is to apologise and retreat to his room to suffer alone. It would be so easy.They would all understand if he said he felt too sick to sit with them.
He is about to make his apologies when Caduceus approaches and places a gentle hand on his shoulder. The firbolg gives him a sympathetic look that makes his lovely, almond shaped eyes turn up at the corners. His hair is bound up out the way of the food, showing the fine rose-coloured down on the shaved part of his skull. He looks soft and welcoming.
“Hey, it’s good to see you up. Do you think you can come and sit with us? I made stew for everyone, but mostly for you. Nice and easy to swallow.”
“Sure.” Caleb finds himself saying. “I’ll give it a go.”
“That’s nice,” Caduceus says happily and turns to fetch Caleb a bowl.
It is nice, actually. Caleb manages to eat a little, mostly to make Nott and Jester stop giving him looks, but there is no pressure when he pushes the bowl away. The hot meal makes his nose run and sets him coughing enough to interrupt the conversation, but Beauregard just leans over to thump him on the back and keeps right on talking. Caduceus passes him a clean handkerchief under the table without drawing attention and noone complains when he turns away to use it.
After the meal he is persuaded to drink a glass of wine and join the rest of the Mighty Nein in the shared space Jester has coined the ‘happy room’. He feels a little weak and shivery, and is about to cross the room to grab a blanket when Yasha tosses one over to him.
“Here, you should have this one,” she says, indicating the delicate embroidered wildflowers over thick wool. “It’s my favourite.”
“It’s beautiful.” He agrees.
The wine has gone straight to his head. He can feel the relaxation seeping through him.
Soon he is yawning and leaning back against Caduceus on the sofa, staring into fire as the chatter of his friends flickers out of focus.
His nose is still bothering him. He sniffles softly, trying not to draw attention, then gasps when the itchy feeling flares suddenly and throws him forward in a sneeze.
““Ah-Tsssh! Ah-tssh-ue! ...ugh. I’m sorry.”
“Wildmother bless you, sweetheart,” Caduceus says fondly.
It happens again, loud enough to make everyone’s heads turn toward him, which sends a blush creeping up his neck. But there are no disgusted glances, just a few raised eyebrows and absent-minded blessings as they return to what they were saying.
As if they don’t mind. As if he has every right to be here, whatever state he’s in. As if they want him around, whether he is contributing  right now or not.
He does feel better for the soup and the spell and the company. More than that, he thinks he can feel something within himself start to heal, too.
It’s taking a long time, but with these people it might just be possible.
END.
Nuclear Gypsies (生きてるうちが花なのよ死んだらそれまでよ党宣言), 1985 dir. Azuma Morisaki
Tumblr media
status: completed download here
translation notes (includes spoilers):
・The film’s english title is “Nuclear Gypsies” after the central subject matter, but the Japanese title is, as you may have noticed, much longer. The Romaji reading of the absurdly long title is “Ikiteru uchi ga hana na no yo shindara soko made yo to sengen”, which roughly translates to, “Declaration by the Being Alive is the Best - If You Die, That’s It Party” - “party” meaning a political party or faction. Going even deeper, the way “being alive is the best” is phrased alludes to the Japanese way of saying “silence is golden”, “言わぬが花” (iwanu ga hana), which in itself directly translates to “not saying is a flower”. Saying something is a “flower” in this way means that it’s “the best”, so in another way the first part of the title could be directly translated to “being alive is a flower”.  It is never made explicit why this is the film’s title.
・Rafute is a signature Okinawan dish, usually consisting of cubed pork stewed in awamori (very strong Okinawan alcoholic spirit), soy sauce, dashi and sugar. Nearly all the body parts of a pig are more or less commonly eaten throughout Okinawa, which explains Barbara’s quip about the pig ears. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafute
・The Okinawan song first sung by Shimabukuro (the character almost only seen on screen playing a sanshin and singing) and then referenced several times throughout the movie is “Juku no Haru” 十九の春 (”Spring of My 19th Year”). Commonly misthought of as a traditional Okinawan folk song (perhaps because it was “adapted” from a much older village song whose composer is unknown), the first recording of the song was released in 1972 and has since been one of the most widely known folk songs representative of Okinawa.  Though the lyrics tell a story from multiple perspectives, which make it a bit hard to comprehend, the song is about an older married man who plans to leave his wife for a younger woman from a brothel. The first 3 verses are sung from the perspective of the wife of the older man, and then the 4th and 5th verses are thought to be from the perspective of the man’s younger lover. The film only references the 1st verse and the 4th.
・There are a few things to note when the Captain says “This is the best place in all of Japan. The Peoples’ Republic of Okinawa, settled on the waves”. The first is that he may be referring to the Ryukyu (former name of Okinawa) independence movement, which has been present since the US occupation after WWII; the second is that “settled on the waves” is a play on words from the name of the eatery that Barbara’s family (?) runs, “Nami no Ue” 波の上、or “on the waves”.
・The Eisa festival is one of Okinawa’s biggest annual traditional festivals, held in late summer. https://www.visitokinawa.jp/information/eisa
・”Tokoyo-no-shima” is a mythological place from ancient Japanese folklore which conjures images of a distant, otherworldly land”, and has the same connotation as “Heaven”, or at times, “Hades”. I believe the name comes from the story of Tokoyo, who sails to far off islands to search for her banished father. “Tokoyo-no-shima” is likely closely related to “Tokoyo-no-kuni”, which is the land beyond the living (like the afterlife, but not really sinister).
・Miyazato making a joke about wrapping things up in old newspaper and exchanging them for tissues refers to an old system in Japan where people could exchange things for tissue/toilet paper.
・Tadashi, an aspiring yakuza underling, refers to Miyazato as “aniki” 兄貴 which is a common way to politely address someone older or above you in rank (sometimes also of the same rank) within yakuza gangs. It translates literally to “(older) brother”, but I have avoided directly translating it to complicate the character relationships.
・A goza mat is a cheap mat made of rush, common in old Japanese houses.
・Kokusai Street (Kokusai-dori) is one of the main streets in downtown Naha, Okinawa.
・Many references are made to a “hanba” 飯場 which can mean a construction camp, bunkhouse or living quarters for workers depending on the context. In Nuclear Gypsies, they refer to the poorly kept living quarters that plant workers live out of, so translations of the term stem from “plant workers’ living quarters”, shortened when necessary.
・Aiko tells the story of how she was named by referring to words used when playing Japanese rock-paper-scissors, “Jan-ken-pon”じゃんけんぽん. I won’t go into the details of the language used in Jan-ken-pon, but the phrase “aiko deshou!”アイコでしょう!is what you say when the first round yields no winners, and so another round is required (usually in quick succession). The phrase “aiko deshou” literally means “it’ll be a tie, won’t it!”, which ties in to Aiko’s story about her name.
・There is a section in the film where Aiko reminisces about all the people she’s met, beginning with the people at the living quarters she was at. The rhythm of her pattern of speech gradually starts to follow a simple possessive grammar that is easy to say in Japanese but difficult to capture in English - for example, “tsume-kami no Takeuchi sensei” 爪噛みの竹内さん puts together the verb/noun - “nail-biting” - with the name of someone - “Mr. Takeuchi”, more or less indicating that the thing that represents that person the most is said verb/noun; an easier example is “Sawa from Shinonome” - “Shinonome no Sawa san”. These get very complicated and Japanese-centric as Aiko goes on, and while I have tried to capture the bizarre nature of her monologue, there is not enough subtitle space to fully translate the multitude of strange expressions she uses to describe all these people, all of them unique. Moreover, her dialogue begins to multiply around 2-3 times and overlap over one another, making it near impossible to transcribe all the things that are being said. Where possible I have included 2 simultaneous dialogue lines in the subtitles, but otherwise I have chosen to only transcribe and translate the lines that can be heard more or less prominently.
・“Distribution of mementos” refers to “katami-wake” 形見分け, a Japanese custom of giving away the belongings of someone that has recently passed away to family members or others close to the deceased.
・A fox’s wedding is a Japanese expression used to describe a sun shower. Where the term “kitsune no yomeiri” 狐の嫁入り is used, I have chosen to leave it in its literal translation rather than translate it as “sun shower”, as later in a pivotal scene where a sun shower happens, the characters refer to it using a different expression.
・At Aiko’s wedding, the “exchanging of nuptial cups” refers to “san-san kudo” 三々九度, a Shinto marriage ritual of exchanging sake cups between a newly wedded couple.
・When Ginko talks to Barbara about Maria’s future, she actually says something along the lines of her “living like a dog who’s being kept alive beyond its useful life”. This somewhat disheartening expression is “kaigoroshi” 飼い殺し in Japanese, whose kanji literally means “killing by owning”. The expression has come to mean someone who is being kept on a payroll despite not being utilized for their skills. I have tried to reflect this in the subtitles.
・When Miyazato mentions “hateful uranium”, the Japanese being spoken is “uraminyumu” 恨みニューム, which is a portmanteau of “urami” 恨み or “grudge, resentment, malice”, and the Japanese pronunciation of uranium. I couldn’t think of any appropriate ways of reflecting this play on words in English, so I have translated it normally.
・I could not find any reference to the Okinawan expression about hands and elbows mentioned by Tamae’s mother at the end of the film, so I’m unsure as to whether it’s real or not. Similarly, I could not locate any references to Shimabukuro’s ominous response “Higan-jirai jishiki, ichigan-jira ishiki”, so I am unable to translate it. It sounds vaguely Buddhist, or it may be some uncommon idiomatic expression - I have no idea, unfortunately. If anyone knows, feel free to get in contact and fill me in - I would love to know!
