Jack Crutchie and Race childhood best friends who took turns sleeping at each others' houses when things were bad at home, who spent so much time together that they practically have their own language, who understand each other so well they don't even have to speak to know what's going on, who are so casually affectionate and loving with each other that all of the have been accused of dating the others more than once, who are each others' stability and solid ground and constant through everything life throws at them.
#and davey coming along and being insecure because how can he compete with these friendships?#while crutchie and race privately worry that davey coming in means they get forgotten#when really what happens is davey gets absorbed as a new part of the group#and it's not the same because how could it be when he doesn't share so much the way they do?#davey will never speak jackcrutchierace the way they do no matter how well he speaks jack because he wasn't /there/#but he can be there for jack just as solid and steady and true. and he can laugh with crutchie and race. tease them and#joke around with them and let them be part of his life too#he can learn that it's totally normal to wake up to race cooking breakfast in their kitchen when he lives six subway stops away#and totally normal for crutchie to show up at dinner time and sit at the place at the table jack set without being told with words he had t#and crutchie and race settle into the norm of knowing that davey is for jack in a way they aren't and that doesn't mean they're losing jack#it means they're gaining davey#anyway. i love them <3#newsies#jack kelly#racetrack higgins#crutchie morris

could i get ships for newsies and wicked, if possible? i'm a bi female, 5 feet tall, curly dark hair, and a prominent nose. i'm really dorky and neurotic, and i have this constant need for people to like me, and i'm not sure why? and i love to sing, except i can only sing theatrical stuff because i've got a really noticeable vibrato (and because i'm extra). i also write sometimes? but i haven't really had time lately, because school is mean.
iâm sorry this took so long and iâm really sorry they arenât my best. itâs been a while since i wrote headcanons so these arenât where iâd like them to be bt i really hope you enjoy them!!
newsies:
i ship you with davey!!
this boi
THIS BOI
so you guys meet in school probs
he hears you singing to yourself as your cleaning the blackboards and heâs all like: jasadmsmd omg this girl
somehow he finds the courage to talk to you and asks if you want to go on a date to which you accept
first date was totally cute
yâall went out to this lil cheap restaurant (and by cheap i mean a family friend that gives him a hefty discount)
you both talked about our life aspirations and interests
davely loves that you write and also loves your singing
wants to hear you sing 24/7
lsdsldflsmd loves your hair
like he just loves how your curls bounce when you both run down the new york streets just because you want
truthfully, a little after your third date, he realizes heâs whipped for you
the boys donât let him forget that either
like heâll do everything he can for you and more
speaking of the boys, you're super nervous to meet them
you just really want them to like you, even if davey insists that they will
you had a little dinner at jacobiâs with jack, kath, crutchie, race, and a few others
race flirted with you almost all night just to rile davey up but they loved you so so so soooooooooo much
on the days where you arenât doing anything, you two will just sit in his apartment doing nothing in particular
like, youâll be writing while he reads and itâs just peaceful silence
during one of these lazy days, you two have your first kiss
it was cold in december so you were both curled up together under the same blanket which was pretty normal for you two
but for some reason, the second the two of you looked into each otherâs eyes, you both just remembered how much in love you were with one another and boom
kiss
iâ sorry, i honestly wish i had more headcanons for davey but i have a good amount for your next ship!!
wicked:
i ship you with elphaba!!
youâre extra? you have a vibrato? youâre a lil dorky? do you know who this girl is most often shipped with? if this is you, instantly falls head over heels
only difference is that youâre nice to her when you first meet
i think the start of your relationship is when she runs out of the classroom after seeing what they were doing to that poor lion cub
you run after her to make sure sheâs okay, which she really appreciates
you tell her that she looks different, which she totally does bc this is after popular, you know
â... do you like it?â
âhonestly? i think the you that you like.â
âcryptic but okay.â
she appreciates you though
because you look at her like a person, the first one to do that
in the time she spends at shiz, she loves talking to you
during lunch, the two fo you will eat and just dicuss your interests
her eyes light up when she hears you like to write
constantly asking you to let her read your work & you constantly telling her someday but not today
glinda does not like you
you want to get her to like you because elphaba likes her and because of that little thing where you want people to like you
but sis just doesnât
elphaba tells you to let it go but you just !!! dlskfmvlsldm
itâs a lil heated between the two of you when the three of you go to the emerald city
after finding out the wizard is a fraud and sets his guards on you all, you want nothing more than for her to fly away from it all
but glindaâs over here saying elphaba should step the fuck down when youâre telling her to step the fuck up kyle
but when the guards are beating down the door, elphaba just grabs your face and kisses you hard in hopes youâll kiss back which you def do
while glinda goes and steals all that fame, you go off to other things
you work in a club in the emerald city as a singer
one day, a boring day, the wizardâs guards show up to your job thinking you know something about the wicked witch
you were hurt and let me tell you, elphaba is P I S S E D
i donât want this to be too long, but long story short, when you get hurt, she does everything in her power to make sure youâre okay
when you are, she takes you into hiding with her
your days together are spent in quiet serenity
you write stories and poetry while elphaba curls up to you in the light of the fireplace with tea on the stove
she loves listening to your voice, it soothes her
you get an animal together, a cat maybe, and spend the rest of your days with each other, hiding from the world that hates you both
her for speaking her mind, and you for standing beside her
you both lovingly look back on your days at shiz, but are content with all that you have now

Twin Trouble
Title: Twin Trouble
Fandom: Newsies
Pairing: Mike x fem!reader
Request:Â âIs there anyway you could write a Mike or Ike x Fem!Reader? Maybe something a bit fluffy? Thereâs really not much with the twins out there but theyâre such cuties. Sorry for the lack of context to the request, Iâm drawing a blank on plot ideas at the moment.â - W anon
Description: You and Mike have been dating for a while and the newsies see this as an opportunity to prank you with his twin brother. Unfortunately for them, youâre the one person who can tell the two boys apart.
Warnings: pranks (?), language, overuse of commas as per usual
A/N: this is based off of my prior experience with dating someone who has a twin, except itâs a bit more cheerful⌠and it actually has a happy ending. Also, I agree completely, the lack of Mike and Ike content is gross. Enjoy!
It had been just a few months since you and your favourite newsie had started going out. Mike had sold you papers every morning since before you could remember. You two became friends very quickly, and one day Mike realized that his feelings for you were much stronger than friendship. It took him a whole year to work up the courage to ask you out to dinner (with encouragement from his brother, Ike, the only other newsie who knew about you two). The way his face lit up when you said yes, after all that time of pining, proved just how relieved and how happy he was. Now, most people would assume that that glow had only lasted until the end of the date, but all these months later and Mikeâs smile was still as bright as the sun. You were finally his girl and he couldnât be happier, especially since you got along so well with Ike when heâd first introduced you two. However, the more evident this joy was, the more Mikeâs fellow newsies got suspicious. He still hadnât told anyone other than Ike about you, and the other boys were all very perplexed as to why their friend was so much more cheerful than usual. They knew the only way they were going to get answers was to ask his brother, so a few of them launched a plan.
Racetrack woke up early that morning, sneaking over to Mikeâs bunk and tying all of his clothes together before moving to get himself ready. As the boys woke one by one, Mike noticed the state his clothes were in and grumbled- it was going to take him forever to untie them and get to the circulation gate. Ike offered to help his brother, but after a quick youâs canât both afford to lose a dayâs pay speech from Jack, he joined the other newsies in filing out of the lodging house and into the streets of Manhattan. As they reached the gates of The World, Race started to snicker.
âWhatâs so funny, Racer?â
âI tied Mikeâs clothes together.â the blonde giggled.
Ikeâs eyes widened, but he wasnât quite sure why he was surprised- this was Racetrack Higgins after all, âWait, what?â
âI tied his clothes together.â Race repeated, âIâs needed to talk to ya alone so I messed with his stuff to give us alone time to talk.â
Romeo piped up, arching an eyebrow, âYa couldnât just ask âim to talk?â
Albert stepped forward, shaking his head, âThat was the plan, but Race had other ideas.â
âThe plan?â Ike asked.
Elmer nodded from his spot ahead of them, âYa brotherâs been actinâ funny, Ike. We wanna know why.â
Ike realized what they were talking about almost immediately, and he hoped that wasnât evident on his face as he tried to lie his way out of the situation, âFunny? Mike ainât actinâ funny. Whatâre ya talkinâ about?â
âWait, Mikeâs been acting funny? I didnât notice anything.âÂ
The boys all turned to see Davey standing behind them, a confused look on his face and his little brother Les at his heels.
Most of the boys muttered their hellos to the Jacobs brothers, but Race just rolled his eyes, âYouâs tellinâ me you ainât noticed Mike smilinâ all dopey while lookinâ at nothinâ?â
âOr his face lightinâ up like the fourth aâ July no matter whatâs happeninâ?â Albert added.Â
âOr him mutterinâ to himself all the time? Or him disappearinâ once sellinâs over for hours and cominâ back lookinâ like he just won the lottery?â Elmer pressed.
âWait.â Davey put his hands up and thought for a moment, âMikeâs been doing all that?â
âYes, he has.â Jack confirmed, ushering the boys through the gate since the Delanceys had just unlocked it, âHas been for tha past few months.â
âMonths?â Davey gulped, âGee, I- I never noticed.â
âYeah, well, you donât spend as much time with âim as we do.â Jack shrugged. nudging Ike, âSo you gonna tell us why or not?â
Ike gulped as he contemplated his options; on one hand, he knew Mike had a reason for not telling the boys about you, and he had trusted Ike with the secret of your relationship- he couldnât betray his brotherâs trust. On the other hand, though, Mike never really said that it was a secret, and he never made Ike promise not to tell anyone. Before Ike could make a decision, however, Davey spoke up again.Â
âWell, Iâm not certain, but it sound to me like Mike is acting this way because of a girl.â
Ike froze as the other newsies whirled around at Daveyâs statement.
âWhat did you just say?â
âI think Mike might be in love.â
The boys turned from Davey to Ike, waiting to see what he had to say. Ike simply sighed, âIf he finds out I told youâs about his girlfriend, heâs gonna kill me.â
There was a pause in the conversation before a single voice cried out, âHis WHAT?!â
Ike spent his day selling with Race, telling him everything and selling as much as he could while Race ran off to tell the other boys. Being the last one at the circulation gate, Mike didnât get to leave with his brother and ended up selling with Crutchie- who was kind enough to sit on a wagon and wait for him to arrive. It took all of five minutes for Mike to convince Crutchie to sell at his usual selling spot; he wasnât about to miss out on seeing you just because Race thought he was funny (and yes, he knew it was Race. Who else would tie all his clothes together?). This new position allowed Crutchie to get some extra information on you that Race and the other boys couldnât- such as how Mikeâs face molded into pure bliss as you approached, and exactly what you looked like as you skipped towards him.
âMikey!â You greeted, beaming as you threw your arms around his neck.
âHiya, gorgeous!â Mike beamed back, his arms wrapped happily around your waist.
âI missed you!â you giggled, handing him a small basket, âMy mother made you these, in case you get hungry during selling.â
âSnickerdoodles!â
âJust for you! So, howâs the headline today?â
Mike chuckled, shaking his head, âI already told you, baby, headlines donât sell papes-â
Before he could finish, a loud voice pierced through the air, âIKE!!â
Both Crutchie and Mike turned around in confusion to see Ike, Racetrack, and about 15 other newsies marching their way.
Ike stepped forward, gesturing accusingly at his brother, âIke, what the hell is you doinâ with my girl?â
Mike stared, still very much confused, âWhat? Iâm Mike, youâre Ike, and sheâs my girl.â
âIke, donât be ridiculous, sheâs my girl. Right, babe?â
You glanced between the two brothers, completely confused, âIke, what are you doing? What are you talking about?â
Albert stepped around them, gesturing to Ike, âYour boyfriend here is worried that his brother is stealinâ you from him.â
âBut thatâs not my boyfriend.â You shook your head, pointing at Mike, âThatâs my boyfriend. I can tell; his dimples are more subtle. Plus heâs got that cute button nose.â
You poked Mikeâs nose, giggling as he smiled and blushed at your actions. The rest of the boys gawked at the scene, completely stunned.
âYouâs can tell them apart?â Race muttered in shock.
You nodded, âWell, of course! Itâs not that hard; Ikeâs dimples are more profound, Mike has more of a button nose, Ike tends to wear more blues while Mike normally wears browns and reds, and their hairlines are totally different-â
As you rambled on, the newsies stared at you like you were speaking Chinese at high-speed. The boys had lived with Mike and Ike for years but theyâve never been able to tell the two apart, and here you were- a girl whoâd been dating Mike for only a few months- getting telling them apart down to a science. It was so easy for you, and as you explained it, the boys wondered how theyâd never noticed these things before. While the other boys stared in shock, Mike looked at you with more love and adoration than he knew was possible. He knew you could tell him and Ike apart, but he never knew youâd noticed all those little things about him. He watched as your face lit up with love at every new detail you mentioned and he could tell that you not only noticed the little things, but they were part of why you fell in love with him. His heart was so full from these discoveries that he almost burst. He couldnât wait until your rambling was over, Mike just had to show you how much he appreciated this.
âPlus, they both have very different tastes; Ike prefers chocolate chip cookies, but my Mikey just loves snickerd-â
Before you could even finish your sentence, Mike grabbed your waist and gently pulled you closer, trying to squeeze every ounce of love and appreciation he had for you into a single kiss. You, of course, didnât hesitate to kiss him back, cradling the back of his neck in one hand. The other newsies smiled, happy that Mike had found someone that he loved so deeply, and disappointed with themselves for trying to mess with that. All in all, it was a moment of pure peace and happiness... or it was until Racetrack piped up from his spot between Specs and JoJo, eliciting laughter from everyone present:
âAlright, alright, get a room!â

(also total inspo at the end from in the heights oops)
Davey watched fondly from the doorway as Jack perched on the edge of one of the bottom bunks, five or six of the youngest boys crowded around him on the floor.
âJack, Jack, how do you say newspaper in Spanish?â one of them piped up, waving his hand frantically as if he were a pupil at a desk and Jack was the teacher. (The image amused Davey to no end; he couldnât for the life of him imagine Jack in a classroom, student or teacher.)
âPeriodico,â Jack answered calmly, saying it slow so the boys could work out the syllables on their tongues and try it out for themselves. âYou know how some oâ them upper-class folks call the papes periodicals?â The boys oohed, and Jack nodded, pleased. âThatâs sort of where they get it. âS all related.â One of the other boys perked up.
âOh, Jack! How do you say selling partner?â He grinned at the boy next to him, and Davey smiled warmly; the two were obviously already inseparable.
Jack smiled, humming in concentration. âI think that would be,â he mused, âsocio vendor.â He looked up and pointed at Davey in the doorway all of a sudden. âSo if I wanted to say in Spanish that Davey was my selling partner, Iâd say, Davey es mi socio vendor.â Clamoring excitedly, the kids on the floor turned to each other and began testing out the new phrase with each otherâs names, giggling as the unfamiliar words tangled on their tongues. Jack laughed, shaking his head as he stood and made his way over to where Davey was standing.
âYouâve got a pretty attentive class there, Mr. Kelly,â Davey greeted him. âYouâre a natural.â Jack waved him off sheepishly.
âAw, shucks,â he joked, âitâs nothing. Helps me practice too. Canât let myself slack off.â Davey smiled.
âYou ready?â he asked, conspiratorially holding up the paper bag heâd been hiding behind his back. Jack gasped, looking .
âYou didnât,â he breathed, and Davey nodded excitedly. Jack clapped his hands briefly before turning back to the group. âOkay, kiddos, Blink is in charge, okay? And rememberâŚâ he gestured to the group of kids on the floor.
âOnly sell papes in English,â they chorused, and Jack grinned.
âAwesome. Blink, you good to hold down the fort for a few hours?â Blink waved him off from where he was perched on a top bunk, legs tangled lazily with Mush.
âGo have fun, Kelly. Race and Albieâll be back soon.â Jack nodded, turning back to Davey, and together they practically sprinted out the door, climbing the fire escape ladder all the way to the penthouse. Crutchie was at the theater that night, helping Medda with one of her shows, so they had the rooftop to themselves. Settling down, Davey whipped his treasure out of the bag with a flourish: a whole cupcake from the bakery down the street, preserved carefully in a box. Jack whooped.
âJesus, Davey, whatâs the special occasion?â he asked, staring longingly at the pastry. Davey shrugged, still not sure if he was ready to divulge the information.
âHad some extra pocket money,â he said. He looked away. âAnd my birthday was yesterday,â he added quickly, hoping Jack would miss it. Jack didnât miss it, his mouth dropping open.
âThatâs why you ate with your famiâ ohh.â He smacked Davey on the arm. âYou bastard, why didnât you tell me?â Davey shrugged.
âItâs not that big of a deal,â he said. âWe donât exactly have the money for presents nowadays, so I just eat dinner with the family, and thatâs that.â Jack suddenly looked guilty.
âWhy you sharing this with me, then?â he asked self-consciously, gesturing at the grandiose cupcake. âShouldnât you be splitting this with Les and Sarah or something?â Davey shrugged.
âWhy wouldnât I share it with you?â he countered. âYouâre my best friend.â Jack smiled brightly at him, eyes shining.
âAw, Dave,â he hummed, and Davey smiled in return, pulling out two forks so they could eat. They made short work of the pastry - after all, it was normally intended for only one person - and put the litter in the bag, setting it aside in favor of reminiscing and looking up at the stars. Jack was warm and solid next to Davey, leaning against the railing of the fire escape.
âJack?â Davey asked. Jack looked at him.
âYeah?â he responded. Davey shifted so they were sitting across from each other, still close enough to touch but able to talk.
âTeach me some Spanish, will you?â he asked, and Jack grinned brightly.
âYeah, sure! What do you want to know?â he asked eagerly. Davey looked around, feeling warm and happy and very much at home.
âHmm,â he hummed. He looked at the penthouse where he spent so much of his time now, how very Jack it was. The drawings, the thin blanket, the hat hanging casually from the rail. âHow do you say fire escape?â Jack drummed his fingers on the metal grate.
âSalida de incendios,â he answered easily. âWhat else?â
Davey looked at Jack, at his easy posture, the confidence radiating off of him that couldâve been perceived as cocky to anyone that didnât know him well. He thought about the strike, the early days, the whirlwind feeling of victory; he thought about Jack surrounded by those little boys in the lodging house, not a care in the world.
âHow do you say best friend?â he asked. Jack blushed.
âMejor amigo,â he answered, looking down at his hands. Davey looked at those hands, calloused and ink-stained, fingers surprisingly nimble; he thought about every time those hands had closed around his wrist to tug him sprinting down an alley at the first sign of trouble, every time those fists had been split and bloodstained after a nasty fight, how those same hands immediately became gentle, weapons no more because someone else was hurt and needed to be taken care of.
âHow do you ask someone to hold your hand?â he blurted. Jackâs head shot up, eyes wide and still.
âToma mi mano,â he managed, and somehow Davey mustered enough confidence to take Jackâs hand like it was the easiest thing in the world. They were close now, close enough for Davey to see every fleck of color in Jackâs eyes, pupils blown wide, his breath coming in soft puffs, lips parted. Davey took a deep, shaky breath in, his heart pounding with anticipation.
âHow do you say âkiss meâ?â he asked, voice barely above a whisper, and Jackâs breath hitched. The stars twinkled above, a breeze blew across the rooftops, a window closed somewhere below them. They were still. Jackâs eyes flicked to Daveyâs mouth imperceptibly fast, his cheeks glowing pink.
âBesame,â he whispered.
Davey did.

So I wrote a thing
I totally donât know what to title this but uh maybe give this a read?? Iâve never written newsies stuff before and nobody proofread it so donât judge too harshly please! âââââââââââââ-
The first time Davey has an attack in front of Jack he runs to hide it. Makes up a stuttered excuse about going to the bathroom and avoids Jacks usual friendly pats on the back just so he wonât notice heâs shaking. They were with Crutchie and Spot and Racetrack in a place that was too crowded, too loud, too much. David had only met Jack a few days earlier, considering heâd just transferred, and he desperately didnât want the reputation of the âpanicky scared freakâ that heâd had at his old school.
So when in the middle of a conversation he felt the familiar drumming of his heart and lump rising in his throat David gently pushed Jacks arm off of him. This earned a confused look from the table and a concerned âYou okay Dave?â from Jack.
Dave. The lump in Davids throat grew at least two sizes larger and he stumbled out of the seat, glad that it was probably too dark to see the blush taking over his face. âB-bathroomâ Silently cursing his stutter he rushed off before anyone could stop him. When the loud chatter of conversation seemed to bleed through the walls of the abandoned restroom it was all David could do to keep from sliding down the wall and crying.
âI 2 3 4 5â Slowly counting and going through his routine breathing exercises David felt his pulse slow and the lump in his throat unknot itself. Taking one last deep breath he walked back out to the group and made up some lame excuse about getting caught up when his mom called him. This led to the boys all teasing him about how 'sweetâ he was, brushing off his weird behavior as just being David.
âââââââââââââ
The second time he has an attack around Jack itâs during lunch. It was Davids second week at their school, and most of the boys had learned that David was not touchy. Although he was affectionate he showed it through exasperated sighs and sheepish smiles, because touch just wasnât his thing (giving or receiving).
Jack was the one exception. The way heâd casually place an arm around Daveys shoulders and how heâd always greet him with a hug all made Dave feel safe. Jack was always patient, at first heâd constantly asked permission but within just a few days he and Davey had learned to communicate almost telepathically. And the boys all recognized this and respected it. Davey didnât like being touched and if you did something he wasnât comfortable with then you had to deal with a pissed off Jack Kelly.
So when Skitteryâs (slightly annoying) cousin Franky sat a little too close to David during lunch it set red flags off in his mind. Choking out laughs and keeping his gaze fixed on Jack and Racetrack who were on his other side David tried to pretend he was fine. Tried to pretend that just the body heat of Franky wasnât making his hands shake and his heart hammer.
âUgh Collins is such a dick Davey!â Groaned Jack overdramatically as he chomped down on his pizza. âI mean who assigns a packet over the weekend?!â Scrunching his nose as his friend talked with his mouth full David gave Jack a stern look, smiling when Jack swallowed his food before speaking again. âOver freaking Romeo and Juliet! The most overrated book of all time!â
Across the table Romeo let out an offended scoff, which made them all burst into giggles. David had almost forgotten about The over enthusiastic kid sitting much too close to him until Franky casually draped an arm around Davids shoulders as he was laughing. Nobody else seemed to have noticed until Davids laugh suddenly cut off and he sat rigid. Racetrack was the first to notice what had made David suddenly so uncomfortable and a fierce glare was sent to Franky. A few others (Romeo, Skittery, and Blink) also sent dirty looks to Franky but he didnât seem to get the message.
Then Jack noticed, and right underneath the surface he was livid. âHey Frankyâ he calmly greeted in a saccharine sweet voice. The mentioned boy leaned over David to hear what Jack had to say, which only made it worse. Squeezing his eyes shut and hunching his shoulders closer to him David tried to slow his breathing. âHow about you let go of Davey here okay Franky?â There was a sickly sweet venom to Jacks voice as he smiled at Franky.
Leaning back into his seat Franky laughed, âAw, he yours Jack?â The comment itself made Jack nearly boil over but what happened next made the entire table mad.
He squeezed David and pulled him into his side, ruffling his hair. Shooting out of his seat David dashed towards an abandoned hallway, his legs shaking so bad he nearly couldnât stand.
âHe donât belong to nobody you dickâ A Seething Jack shoved Frankyâs chair back before running after Dave.
'Not today not hereâ David thought frantically. Everything around him faded into a blur as he gasped like a fish out of water, too panicked to even think of his breathing exercises. Slipping down to the floor he tried desperately to think of anything, resorting to tears when it didnât work.
âShit Daveâ
The discord inside Davids head calmed the tiniest bit as he recognized Jacks voice. But he was acutely aware of the fact that Jack was panicking a little bit too.
âHey hey just breath okay? Count with me budâ
A barely managed nod enough for Jack and he was surprised when David grabbed one of his hands, squeezing tight. Wasnât affection the reason for Davids current panic anyways?
â1 2 3â
Squeezing Davids hand Jack sat down across from him, letting out a relieved sigh when his counts were finally repeated.
â1-1 2 3â
They continued counting until Jack felt Davids hands stop shaking and his stutter all but vanished. âIâm sorry Davey, I knew Franky was sitting too close but I figured it wouldnât get too bad.â The two sat with their back against the lockers, Jacks arm draped across Davids shoulders and David leaning into his side for support.
âIts fine, I get these all the timeâ Jacks breathing hitched and David winced. 'He thinks youâre a freak, a wimp. Heâs gonna leave you like everyone elseâ
But Jack didnât leave, he squeezed David just a little bit closer to his side. âWhy didnât you tell me Dave? Is that why you left at dinner the other night?â
And so they spent lunch and their free period discussing Davids anxiety and how Jack could help.
âââââââââââââ-
The third time David has an attack around Jack, Jack does everything he can to prevent it.
Several of their friends were in the band and so heâd joined Jack and Crutchie for a football game to see their friends play. David had yet to attend any games because a football game was just about the worst place for somebody with sensory overload issues and a pretty severe anxiety. But Jack promised heâd be with him all night, and so David allowed his best friends to drag him to the game.
âPopcorn Dave?â Crutchie asked, holding it out towards his friend who shook his head. Currently the three sat towards the top of the bleachers because it was less crowded and Jack assured David 'you can see better up here anywaysâ. Jack and Crutchie sat on either side of him, David leaning into Jack who had an arm wrapped protectively around his shoulders. After a particularly bad call yelling and shouts rippled throughout the audience and David nuzzled into Jacks scarf.
âItâs too loud Jackyâ Wincing at the quiet tone of the curly haired boy who was hiding in his scarf Jack nodded.
Pushing Davids hair off of his forehead Jack placed a light affectionate kiss on the exposed patch of skin, which only made David burrow into his scarf more in an attempt to hide his intense blush. âHow about I go get you a hat or some earmuffs?â After a second of hesitation David nodded because Jack wouldnât take longer than five minutes and Crutchie himself had an anxiety problem and knew what to do if an attack happened. âIâll be right back okay?â Gently Jack shifted David over towards Crutchie, who smiled brightly and held Davids hand to assure him that somebody was still with him.
âThanks Jackâ
Watching Jack walk down the stairs and away from him made Davids heart panic. He knew it wasnât healthy, this unsafe feeling he got whenever Jack wasnât around. Pushing it down he instead leaned into Crutchie who jumped a little in surprise because David normally wasnât comfortable with much more than occasional hand holding. A moment later he smiled and melted into the affectionate gesture, holding Davids hand just a bit tighter.
âDave do you even like football?â Sheepishly David shook his head and Crutchie laughed. âMe neither, but Jack sure does have a way of convincing people to do things. Wanna watch Netflix on my phone instead?â With a nod David snuggled even further into Crutchies side.
Thatâs how Jack found them 10 minutes later when he returned with nachos and a cute red and yellow beanie for David. When he saw his best friend since kindergarten and his new best friend cuddled up on the bleachers and giggling hysterically at something on a phone screen he couldnât stop the affectionate smile on his face. God he had already known he loved Crutchie, but now Dave comes along with his crystal clear blue eyes and his curly hair and sarcastic comments and random facts. Jack should feel guilty shouldnât he? After all somebody had once told him it was impossible to actually love 2 people at the same time.
Then again, when did Jack Kelly ever listen to what anybody else said?
âââââââââââââ- The fourth time, Jackâs the one who causes it.
He really hadnât meant to, honest. What kind of dick would intentionally cause their friend/crush to have an anxiety attack?
A few weeks ago Jack had confessed to Crutchie, babbling about how he was in love with his best friend for what seemed like hours until Crutchie just laughed and pressed his lips against his. Jack thought that once he had Crutchie his love for Davey would go away. Not that he wanted it to but it made him feel guilty.
Little did he know Crutchie felt the same way.
When heâd first heard they were together Davids heart sank. The two people he had slowly fallen in love with were in love with each other. There would probably be no more safe touches, no more protective arms placed around shoulders. No mumbled Daves, and no bright Daveys. Jack and Crutchie had each otherâŚso why would they need him?
And so he drifted. It started with little things like denying requests to hang out, or 'forgettingâ to respond to calls and messages. (Both of them knew Davey didnât just forget things) And then it turned into avoiding them at halls, sitting next to Skittery who sat on the other side of the table from his usual spot. The last straw was when David completely walked past their table and took a seat on the ground, leaned against the wall.
âOkay thatâs it. I gotta see whatâs up with him.â Standing up from his seat Jack made his way over to David.
âJack Kelly do not confront Dave- I canât believe you!â Skillfully avoiding students Crutchie bounded over to Jack (or at least as close to bounding as one could get when they had to use a crutch) in an attempt to stop him. âJack youâre going to overwhelm him! Just wait and we can ask him to come over after school or something and ask then!â
Turning to face Crutchie Jack sighed. âBut he wonât Crutch. Heâs avoiding us and I have to know whyâ Continuing his speedy approach towards Dave he stopped only when he was almost directly in front of Dave.
Red flag.
Despite the fact that he knew Jack would never actually hurt him David recognized the fact that he was now trapped against the wall. And that was no good. No good no good no no no no no. Swallowing his strawberry David kept his gaze fixed on Jacks shoes. âY-yes?â
In a tone that came off much harsher than intended Jack asked him, âWhy are you avoiding Crutch and I?â
Shaking hands.
Gripping his hands together Davids shoulders tensed up and he scrambled for an answer. How do you tell your best friend that you like both him and his boyfriend? âI-Its nothingâ
âOh so you just decided to be a dick and avoid us because of 'nothingâ?â The moment the words came out Jack regretted them. Everybody had problems, and Jacks was not thinking before he spoke. âShit Iâm sorry I didnât mean that Davey i-i justâ kneeling down to Davids level he reached an arm out to pay him and flinched when David shied away, shaking violently.
âOh now youâve gone and done it Jack Kellyâ Crutchie whispered harshly. Shooting a glare at his boyfriend he plopped onto the floor, fixing his gaze on David. âHey hey can you count for me Davey? Just repeat after me, 12345â
Breathing shallowly David tried to copy, stutter and getting stuck and growing more and more frustrated until tears shone in his eyes.
âDaveâ
He hated to admit it but god Davey had missed the sound of his nickname rolling off Jacks tongue. Missed it so much that just hearing it calmed him down. Missed it so much that he grabbed onto both Jack and Crutchie hands tightly.
Neither said anything but a glance was shared between them that seemed to convey everything theyâd wanted to tell each other.
They both loved Davey, and each other. It was messy and different but it was what had happened.
A hesitant but protective arm was wrapped around Daveys shoulders and he nearly cried again, gripping Crutchies hand even tighter when he started to try and move. âI thought you didnât need me anymore.â
Jack threw Davey an incredulous look and softly kissed his forehead. âWeâll always need you you goof.â Burrowing into his sweater David thought he would combust when Crutchie scooted next to him and placed another kiss on his forehead.
âB-but you guys have each other and I donât wanna get in the way of your relationship because you guys deserve to be happy and I donât wanna be an awkward third wheel so-â His rambles were cut off by Jacks lips on his. David 'walking mouthâ Jacobs was speechless as he looked between Crutchie and Jack in panic.
'Jack just kissed me??! In front of his boyfriend??â When Crutchie leaned over to repeat Jacks actions David was even more confused. âI-I think I missed something here?â His voice rose at least 2 octaves as he continued to panic.
âWell you see, I think I like you Davey.â The casual way Jack said it made David snort despite his panic.
âBut, but Jack you have a boyfriend?â
âYes I like him tooâ As if to prove the point Jack kissed Crutchie. For a minute or so David just opened and closed his mouth without making any actual noise. Crutchie had to bite back a laugh, figuring David would be a little offended if he laughed.
After the minute of David gaping like a fish Crutchie spoke up, âI like you too y'know Dave, and Jack. And we have a sneaking suspicion you like us both too.â Both older boys took the blush that crept up Davids neck as a yes. âSo we were wondering if you wanted to be a relationship with us?â
At the renewed look of panic on Davids face Jack scrambled to calm him down. âItâs gonna be messy and weird and if you donât want to then thatâs fine. But we really do both like you Dave.â Squeezing his anxious friends shoulders Jack chewed on his lip as he waited for an answer.
âI-Iâd like that, I really would.â Smiling shyly at his friends, boyfriends now he supposed, David nodded. âYeah I think Iâll like that.â
