'Stars of the Silver Screen' (working title) LIFE SERIES WINNERS AU

HI! so. uh. ive been thinking about a new au while taking a wondrous break from the sea prince and with alien stage infecting my mind rn... i might as well spitball some ideas in regards to it! if all goes well, ill have a fic made of it <3 (reasonably shorter than tsp, i want it to be contained in one fic)

SO. lets talk about it a little!

General blurb;

In a world corrupted and filled to the brim with chaos and nonsense, the Watchers provide a sense of relief and entertainment with their brilliant and stunning performers. Their performances are to die for-- quite literally.

Only the most talented are to succeed within the confines of a glorious stage, only one must take the crown.

So what might happen if the Watchers' top performers compete for the crown?

The Stars of the Show; (wip codenames)

Grian (GR-1AN) | Golden Sun

A child of the Watchers, Grian grew up knowing about his true origin while keeping it a secret from everyone else. He doesn't really want to talk to other performers because of it, and he doesn't see the need to, if he was being honest. He's sick of the life he was forced into, but he performs to survive. He's been doing well so far, enough to be deemed a winner, so he has to be doing something right... right?

Scott (5C-0TT) | Brilliant Star

Once an over rebellious performer, Scott is now the Watchers' best performer out of all winners. After the death of his performing partner, Pearl, Scott has resigned himself to following every whim and command the Watchers give him. He has proved to be a wondrous asset, beating all of his opponents with ease and charm. Though his fellow performers are put off by his attitude, they'd wish to never go against him. He has never lost a match in all of his years of performing.

Pearl (P3-4RL) | Bright Moon

Presumed dead by the public, Pearl works in the shadows to bring the Watchers down. Originally, she and Scott planned to leave together, but after her escape plan went awry she was forced to watch Scott perform alone, silently wishing she was there with him. She has to do this for him. For the rest of the performers, too. She just needs Scott to hold on a little longer, and it'll be like she never left at all.

Martyn (M4-RTYN) | Thrilling Mars

Known for his more aggressive performances, Martyn sets out to keep his audience entertained, even if he's a bit of a hothead. Though, offstage, he tries to make acquaintances with other performers, he can't help but feel a little closed off. He knows death, like everyone else, but it took away Ren. He wouldn't want to strike any more connections than he needs to.... But what's Scott's deal, exactly? Why was he acting like that?

Scar (SC--AR) | Grounding Earth

A bright and cheery performer on the outside, a sick and tired individual on the inside. Scar yearns for the outside world, but he wants to leave with Grian, a man he'd been crushing on for the past few years. He's aware that Grian probably doesn't like him as much as he does, but that distant and longing stare from the man is enough of a conviction that Scar would want to bring Grian with him. Like other performers, Scar is wholly unaware of Grian's origins, and believes that he had a 'normal' upbringing like everyone else.

Cleo (CL-3O-) | Unlabeled as of now

The newest addition in the collection, Cleo is shaken at the thought of performing with more 'dangerous' people. She wants to survive, and hell maybe the others too, but she can't help but be monitored by Scott, or given a distance glance by Grian. All she knows is that she has to get out. The outside world can't be that bad, can it?

Notes;

i want this au to be primarily focused on the winners and their place as the Watcher's 'performers'/captives, but i do want to worldbuild on what had happened to the other lifers!

the fic is probably centered on more platonic bonds overall than anything romantic! completely reasonable if people see some romantic tension haha

100000% theres going to be major character death haha, with the nature of its inspiration id like to mess with that <3 so when i brainstorm further, your favorite lifers may or may not be dead!

bc of the au's nature (since its around singing, with alien stage) im not sure how id write it! i feel writing characters sing is a little hard for me to do, so maybe elaborate dances, hm... its a major part of the story-- and i explicitly dont want them to fight physically!

theres a lot of things i gotta work out the kinks on (whos perspective we follow and whatnot) but i feel i already have the main outline bulleted out! itll be much shorter than tsp so- i think i got it haha

i feel i'll formally work on this after wild life, so whoever becomes this series' winner is probably going to play a vital role :0c i can't incorporate secret or wild into tsp as much but this au can definitely work with those more <3

hehe ofc i'll tell you about the love of my life and the bane of my existence, thunder :]

so my sarchengsey fic is like... it's the ultimate road trip fic. there's kisses in the middle of crop circles. there's beach adventures. there's carpool karaoke. there's fights. there's sitting on the ground in gross gas station toilets. there's in depth discussions of love and sexuality. there's people who don't know how to switch gears. there's friendship and love and messiness and three people who do not know how to deal with that. there's a glorious instance of the only one bed trope where all three of them lie awake being stressed out by their feelings thinking the others are asleep. and, eventually, there's a relationship

and if you're now thinking "wow noah, that sounds so cool, i wanna read that!"... well yeah! me too! but the issue is i also gotta write it! and i'm at 9k words rn after spending four months with it and nowhere near done with it! so yeah, this fic is making me so happy, it's in my humble opinion the best thing i've ever written, but i'm also incredibly stuck and it'll probably take a while until i'm ready for it to see the light of day. until then i will continue to scream about it whenever the opportunity arises

do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I want to, I swear!! But the process goes like this: I see the comment and I have to sit and bask in the warm happy glow, and then I get distracted while thinking of something to say and suddenly it’s been two years and then it feels a little awkward, right? So this is just to say: If you have ever commented on my fic, I see you and I love you and I cherish every word. Thank you.

what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I am bad at angst. Probably the fics with the saddest endings are In Fire (exr Pacific Rim fusion) and We Will Become Silhouettes (Professionals episode-tag drabble--it’s not clear without context, but they sort of explode at the end).

Honorable mention to Even After All These Years, which has the angstiest beginning. 

have you ever received hate on a fic?

I once got scolded in an AO3 comment for using the fandom tag correctly. Also someone yelled at me on ff.n for mentioning America in a positive context in a Les Mis songfic. (There were so many better reasons to yell at me for that fic, tbh.)

do you write smut? if so what kind?

The highly fraught and overly emotional kind. Also sometimes the iambic pentameter kind, or the alliterative verse kind.

For years I could only get myself to write smut for the semi-annual p*rn battle that was held on dreamwidth. It was super-handy for shutting up my inner editor and locking my inhibitions in a cupboard somewhere.

have you ever had a fic stolen?

Scraped to a random website, yeah, but not stolen.

have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! Grounds for Dismissal was translated in to Chinese, and a few other fics have podfic versions, too!

have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not to completion, but writing with friends is a joy even if we never finish things. 

what’s your all time favorite ship?

Don’t make me choose, it’s mean. But Enjolras and Grantaire have had my whole heart for quite some time now.

what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

All of my as-yet-incomplete Les Mis fics are in a shared word doc. It is longer than my total AO3 word count. There’s a college professor AU (exr, of course) that has gotten hugely bloated and might or might not be fixable.

But I will finish the indulgent Batman AU someday. Mark my words.

what are your writing strengths?

Banter! And replicating a voice or a style. 

what are your writing weaknesses?

Action and smut. What are bodies? What do they do? How many limbs to they usually have, again? I don’t even know.

what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Storytime! I was the only non-Classics major in my Latin class, and my professor would regularly start writing shit on the board in Greek. I would have to raise my hand and remind him that I couldn’t understand it.

And that’s all I want: to understand what I’m reading. Whether the author uses translations or context clues, or just indicates in the header or the notes that you need to know multiple languages to understand the fic, I’m cool with it.

(Also consider not italicizing words from other languages when you put them in a sentence. Daniel Jose Older has a great 2-minute video on it here.)

what was the first fandom you wrote for?

Somewhere in my parents’ house is a blue spiral-bound notebook with a printed label that says Star Wars Novel on it. I think I was 11 or 12 and it was a Young Jedi Knights continuation. So...that one.

what’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Usually, whatever fic I’ve finished most recently. But I’m really proud of The Glorious People’s Republic of the Cafe Musain. I can’t claim a hundredth of Terry Pratchett’s skill, but trying on his style was an absolute blast, and there are some lines in those fics that I’m still genuinely delighted by.

01. Who is the first writer you remember being interested in knowing more about them?

I think R.L. Stine was the first author who’s name I could remember by heart. I read all the Goosebumps books as they were translated into danish! The librarian was always tapping me on my shoulder whenever a new book came in. Buuut I’ve never really dived into the private lives of the creators. Any creator. I’ll worship a song more than a band, a book more than an author and so on.

I suppose real life just doesn’t interest me that much, heh.

02. What ending of a work of fiction surprised or offended you the most?

UuuGhhhag, ‘Norwegian Wood’ pisses me off. Murakami just end the journey, like that, and I hate that ending. I hate it a lot. Despite its dissolving beauty.

A huge cookie I just baked. It was megaHUGE and glorious and the best batch ever, but now I feel sick. Too big. Too much perfection.
