You give me sun coded vibes - but like on a summers day when its slipping into the evening so it’s still warm and the sky is looking gold, but also on a winters morning when there’s a chill in the air but if you stand in the right sun spot you can feel the warmth .. I hope that makes sense
Oh my gosh love to you! You understand me! Sunrises, sunsets, light at transitional times 💞

Hey girl, me again 🥺I’ve had this idea in my head for ages 🤔 based off the song ‘Polaroid’ by Liam Payne Mason Mount on holiday with the boys in Mykonos, him and the boys befriend a small group (reader and friends) bassically a holiday fling between reader and Mason but he never actually gets her name or anything just a few ‘Polaroid’ pictures of them both, few months later he’s been trying to find her but can’t and the lads convince him to post it on Instagram with the caption “Instagram do your thing” after a while he notices numerous different people (her friends) tagging the reader in it and turns out it’s her and sends her a message. Thankyou sweet cheeks 😎💙
aaahh bestie this is such a good idea
𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 — mason mount
summary: mason can’t find the girl he had a fling with last summer, so he takes to the internet to find you.
notes: my requests are open, ask away!
for @yourmypurpose
Winning the Champions League was supposed to be a feeling like no other, a feeling that you’d remember for the rest of your life. But Mason felt deflated, he felt like the world was closing in on him and he could do nothing but watch it happen. Even his friends noticed his awful mood, they’d gone from watching him run around the pitch with the trophy, with a smile nobody could take away from him, to this; a man not wanting to leave his bedroom, let alone his house. His career was the only thing he was doing well in, his girlfriend left him, he would just train, come home to an empty house, sleep, and repeat. It wasn’t a life worth living.
“It’ll be fun,” Declan pleaded, following his best friend into his living room, “it’ll be the perfect chance to get away from everything, from work, from the UK, from your ex.” He spoke the last part quietly, yet Mason still heard and shot his friend a glare as he sat on the couch.
“I’ll think about it.” Mason mumbled, reaching for his PlayStation controller and turning his console on. Declan was trying to get Mason to come to Mykonos with a few of the Chelsea boys, as a celebratory vacation after winning the Champions League. But he wasn’t budging.
“You say that, but you never do. Come on, if it doesn’t lift your mood, you can take the next flight home.” Declan was trying to reason with his friend, to do anything in order to get this man out of his sweatpants and into some swim shorts. This holiday was all Mason needed to get back into his rhythm, to realise you don’t need a girlfriend to be the best version of yourself, to realise he was Mason fucking Mount.
The look on Mason’s face was completely readable, a smile appearing on Declan’s face. Declan jumped onto his friend, cheering and shaking him vigorously. “You won’t regret this, we’re gonna have so much fun.”
Mason found himself in his plane seat, earphones on, and on the way to Mykonos. Greece had always been one of his dream destinations, it was one of the places he’d planned on going to with his ex. Shaking his thoughts from his head, he’d drowned himself in the music. Waiting for the next three hours to be over.
The villa was lovely, the view from his room was even better. He felt himself smile just a little, hopeful for this holiday. He’d spent the first day enjoying the food of Greece, visiting the beach, taking in the place he was staying. Every time the negative thoughts would try to push in, memories of his previous vacations with his ex, he shut it down. He forced a smile and laughed with his friends, hoping they didn’t see through this façade.
It was tiring. Getting back from a busy day and then being told there was a club in town. Having to force that smile back onto his face once more. He still dressed appropriately for the night ahead, pre-gaming with his friends before heading out to this club. It was only 8pm and it was packed, the place had an outside terrace, which didn’t seem so crowded.
Drink after drink, rounds of shots, drinking games with his friends and a few randomers. It was wild. Mason was finally beginning to let go of it all; his negative thoughts weren’t affecting him right now. It was pure bliss.
“Mase,” Declan called out, gesturing to him on the other side of the bar, “wanna play beer pong? These guys need another group.” Mason just nodded along, looking over to the group he was referring to. It was a group of four, just like them, but he’d locked eyes with you for the first time.
Throughout the game, you constantly had a smile stuck to your face, brighter than anything he’d seen before. It was the infectious type of smile, one that spread to his face too. The drinks had done a number on his movement, almost stumbling to the terrace, where only a few people sat. He took in the cool air, resting his head back onto the wall behind him.
“You good?” You questioned, sitting beside him and placing a hand on his shoulder. He quickly opened his eyes, turning his head to face you. There you were again.
“I’ve had a lot to drink,” Mason mumbled, breathing heavier than usual, “your twin looks so much like you.” You just laughed, understanding how much he’d had to drink. You had also had a lot to drink, but clearly Mason didn’t handle alcohol well.
“Here,” you instructed, holding his hand out for him and placing a cup into his hand, “it’s water, drink it.” You watched as he did so, downing it rather quickly and slamming it onto the table beside him. “Do you remember your name?”
“Yes, it’s Mount. Mason Mount.”
“Well, Mount, Mason Mount, do you remember where you’re staying? I think it might be an idea to get you home.” You spoke, the cool air sobering you up almost entirely. Mason’s head was getting droopy, you’d seen this all before, he was inches away from snoozing on your shoulder. You just giggled at him and stood up, grabbing both of his hands and pulling him up.
“We walked here from our villa, it’s a silly looking one. One with the pool shaped like a love heart.” You hummed, not knowing which one exactly, so his information rendered useless. He was leaning against you as you both walked back into the club, spotting his friends again.
“Hey, he’s had a lot to drink. I was going to walk him home but the only thing he said about the villa was that the pool was heart-shaped.” You laughed to his friend, who you’d learnt was called Ben. Mason was looking around the club, the multi-colored lights making his eyes squint in pain. This was the beginning of his hangover, he knew it was only going to get worse from here.
Ben had been kind enough to give you the villa address, and a key, so you made your way to the location. It was weird how trusting they were, for all they knew, you could be a psycho thief. You’d gotten to the villa, after an awful walk up the hill, and placed him on the couch. You didn’t even want to look at their stairs, let alone take Mason up them.
“I’ll stay here until your friends get back,” you spoke quietly, grabbing the blanket from the back of the couch and laying it over the half-asleep Mason, “night, Mason.”
“You never said your name.” He stated, craning his head to look at you as you sat on the opposite couch.
“Y/N.”
Declan had gotten back, wanting to arrange another outing together, a bit less boozy than a club. And here you were, on your way to spend the day on a boat. You’d brought your polaroid camera with you, hoping to get some nice pictures with your friends before you go home in a few days.
“You’re back.” You spoke, sitting beside Mason as the boat started to move. He smiled at you, handing you a flute of a sparkly liquid, which you’d taken without complaining. “Having fun so far?”
“Yeah, I’m glad I’m seeing you again. I don’t really remember much from last night apart from your face.” He admitted, rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment. You blushed, hiding it with your hands and reaching for your camera.
“What do you say to a picture? To remember this moment.” You suggested, holding the camera up at the two of you. Mason’s arm slid around your shoulders, pulling you in closer with a smirk on his face. You just smiled your usual, bright smile, and let the photo develop.
The day was spent enjoying the view, jumping off the boat multiple times, finally making your way back to the docks when the sun began to set. Everyone was sitting on the front of the boat, taking in the last few hours of the sun on their skin, whilst you and Mason were at the back together. Away from the sun, completely alone. You laid beside him, your eyes shifting to look at him every few seconds.
“Take a picture, it’ll last longer.” He retorted, poking his tongue out at you as you laughed, shoving his leg slightly.
“Oh, I already have.” You replied wittily, holding the polaroid up to show him. It was quite a creative picture, actually. His skin was tanned, muscles perky, the sun hitting him in all the right places. He was very handsome, you could only imagine the job he had back home.
“Hey, give that,” Mason chuckled, reaching for the polaroid but you’d held it away from him. He leant over to you, hand out to grab it, but you’d both been focused on something else. How close your lips were. You could feel the other’s breathe, it was straight out of a movie the way Mason grabbed your waist and closed the gap between the two of you. He was pulling you down with him, your legs instinctively wrapping around his waist. This was an Oscar-worthy kiss.
You knew you wouldn’t see these boys again, as you didn’t have long before you returned back to the UK. So, as you were grabbing your things, you’d flicked through the polaroid's from today, finding the one of you and Mason.
“Here,” you spoke, holding the polaroid out for him to take, “I thought you’d like it. And it’s a way of remembering your time here, and the most gorgeous girl you’ve ever laid eyes on.” You joked, but Mason really felt that way. You were the most gorgeous girl he’d laid eyes on. He came on this holiday thinking it would depress him even more, but he found fun in you.
“Trust me, I won’t forget a face like that.” He replied, placing the polaroid into his wallet and smiling. “See you,” he whispered against your neck as you hugged, one last time, “someday.”
It had been two months since he’d returned from holiday, back to work, but more importantly, back to his old self. He enjoyed going to work, coming home, and spending time with his friends. He saw beauty in his mundane life again. But he missed you. He never thought he’d miss a two day fling with a random girl on holiday, it wasn’t even a fling, The pair of you hadn’t hooked up, only shared a kiss. But it was a good kiss, an unforgettable kiss.
“Have you searched her name up?” Declan asked, relaxing into the corner of Mason’s couch, rolling his eyes as Mason opened his wallet up for the fifteenth time that day. The boys were round for their frequent game day, a day Mason looked forward to.
Mason shook his head, slightly embarrassed to have forgotten your name, in his defense, he was out-of-this-world drunk. “I don’t remember it, I was hammered. Plus, I’m sure there’s at least a thousand people in this country who share her name.”
“Post the picture on Instagram, people always find people on there, it’s creepy.” Ben added, laughing at the end of his statement. It was a good idea, but was he ready to put it out there that he’d moved on, only for his ex to be mentioned in his comments again? Were you worth all of those nasty comments?
He’d posted the polaroid that evening, with the caption:
‘Instagram, do your thing.’
You had received a call from your brother, just as you were heading up to bed. Strange, you thought, your brother only called if he had some ridiculous news. You’d answered it, sitting on your stairs as he spoke.
“Did you meet anyone on holiday?” He questioned, your mind instantly flicking back to your memories with that man. The kiss on the boat, the horrible walk up the hill, the fighting over a polaroid.
“Why’s that your business?” You questioned, running up your stairs and grabbing the polaroid's from your bedside table and flicking through them.
“It’s my business when I’m scrolling through Instagram, only to find a Chelsea player has posted a picture of you and him.” He mentioned, voice raising in disbelief as he finished his sentence. You furrowed your brows, Chelsea player?
“Chelsea player? Chelsea, as in the football team you follow?” You wondered, opening Instagram to find this man’s account. You’d forgotten his name, curse your horrible memory. “What’s his name again?”
“Mason Mount,” he recalled, and you were kicking yourself for not remembering his silly James Bond introduction. Finding his account, you’d seen his recent post. It was your polaroid. The one you’d given him the last time you’d seen each other, he was looking for you. Your heart was beating rapidly in your chest, scrolling the comments and seeing everyone compliment you. How did you manage to run into this man and not remember his face? Or his name? The amount of times your family had mentioned how A1 he was on the pitch, how happy they were when Chelsea had won the Champions League.
“That’s not me,” you lied to your brother, knowing there was no way of escaping this now, everyone you knew would be able to tell it was you.
“Don’t bullshit me, Y/N,” he laughed on the other end of the phone, as you were frantically shoving the polaroid's back into your drawer, “I don’t know anyone else who uses a polaroid camera.”
“Should I text him?”
“You’d be an idiot not to.”
After ending the call with your brother, you sat in Mason Mount’s inbox for over an hour, unable to send him a message. Was there a right thing to say? Was ‘hi’ not enough for the man you’d left a mark on? Throwing away all of your conflicting thoughts, you sighed and just sent the word, ‘hey’. It didn’t take long for him to get back to you, so over the moon that he’d found you.
Mason: I can’t believe it worked, I actually found you.
Turns out my brother follows you and saw the picture, small world?
Mason: Chelsea fan, huh?
Guess so.
Your conversation lasted until the early hours of the morning, you promising Mason a proper date when you were both free. He had training the next day, but how could he sleep when he now knew you. He now had your Instagram, so he could talk to you, instead of staring at the polaroid in his wallet a million times a day.

i have to tell you that the second i saw cal and ash on that mountain getaway a couple weeks ago, i thought about how desperately i would love a sequel to your turks & caicos fic set during that trip. (this is not a request, i promise, i just wanted to tell you bc that is one of my fav fics of all time)
Aw anon!! 🥺 Gosh I hadn't even thought about that when I was in my feelings about the mountain getaway pictures, which is wild because I am just remembering now that I started a fic after the honeymoon comment initially happened (like, very soon after, because @elliebirdthings was at that show and told me about it and we were freaking out haha), before we knew that they went to Turks & Caicos, and I had them taking that trip to a cabin in Maine.
Just for kicks, because this message made me smile and I love you for that, here's the beginning of that fic. It's unfinished obviously (not even any kissing!), but there's some nice stuff in there I think. This fic was going to be titled A whole fucking lifetime of this after the American Pleasure Club album which was a title I should have kept, goddammit. Also randomly in here I have them driving to the cabin while listening to My Bloody Valentine, who Ashton later called out as one of his main influences for Superbloom.
1600 words of unfinished Cashton under the cut! 😘
The day after the last meeting about the promo schedule the dressing room conversation turns, as it does, to plans for the break. It’s a month out, but they’ve to a man developed a fetish for planning their free time carefully as soon as the schedule’s set. Planning things makes Ashton feel like a grown-up. He likes renting cars. Sometimes he scrolls through AirBnB for hours just to see what’s out there.
“I’m going straight back, we got Dodgers tickets,” Michael says.
“I remember when you used to say ‘we’ and it meant you and me,” Calum says. He wiggles a little from where he’s snuggled against Michael on the couch like he wants to get away, but of course Michael doesn’t let him. Ashton thinks he probably wasn’t really trying.
“Aw, you’ll always be my first love,” Michael tells him, squeezing Calum to him more tightly. “You wanna make out just for old times sake?”
“I do not,” says Calum, but he lets Michael give him a big kiss on the forehead, his face squinching up happily.
“I just wanna get away for a bit, no work or social media or anything,” says Ashton, ignoring their tomfoolery. “A little cabin by a lake somewhere.”
“Oh yeah?” Luke says. “Where are you and Cal going this time?”
“Maine,” Calum says, at the same time as Ashton says, “Why would you assume we’re going somewhere together?”
A small silence falls over the room.
With dignity, Ashton says, “Calum and I are going to Maine.”
“Just get out in front of it this time,” Michael advises. “Let everyone know it’s another honeymoon. Take control of the narrative.”
“How many times can you go on a honeymoon before you have to acknowledge that you’re married?” Luke asks nobody in particular.
“It’s a bro trip,” Ashton says firmly. “For bros.”
“It’s very bromantic,” Luke says. “It’s okay, I’m not hurt I wasn’t invited. I love going back to LA and jerking off alone.”
“It’s nice that we’ve all got plans,” Calum says. He’s settled peacefully back against Michael, Michael absently petting his hair.
“It’s not a honeymoon,” Ashton insists.
*
Whatever, Ashton called it what he called it, okay? Might as well control the narrative.
Over drinks at the bar after their last show Calum asks, “Where would you want to go on your honeymoon, anyway? Somewhere new?”
Ashton pokes at the ice in his cocktail with his straw. Aren’t they supposed to not be using straws anymore because of the ocean or whatever? Ashton loves the ocean, it’s very important to him. Also this cocktail sucks. “Can I try your drink?” he asks. “I don’t love mine.” Calum has something with ginger in it, and bubbles. Calum slides his obligingly over, and Ashton passes his own over to be fair.
“I like yours better,” Calum says after a sip. “You wanna trade?”
Sometimes Ashton does believe in soulmates. “Yes, thank you.” He takes a long drink. “It would be nice to spend more time in Italy. Not one of the tourist-y parts though, somewhere quiet. Up north, maybe, one of the smaller towns.” He tries to picture what it would be like: olive groves, blue skies, stone churches. An old villa with lemon trees and a view of the hills. He’s so used to traveling with the band or just with Calum that it’s hard to picture anyone else there with him. They’re all as prone as anyone to get swept up with girls to the exclusion of most everything else, but Ashton can’t really imagine a future without seeing Calum all the time, without talking to him every day. Maybe he and Calum could just get married around the same time and they could all go on a honeymoon together.
“Yeah, that’d be pretty nice,” Calum says, looking wistful. Ashton wants to take a picture of him, capture the way a curl rests against his temple, how the blue neon lights behind the bar hit the glitter he let Ashton smear on his cheekbones before the show. They made a no social media pledge for this trip but Ashton’s bringing his camera anyway. He has to keep in practice, doesn’t he? Anyway, it’s important to capture these memories.
“Maybe we should just go,” Ashton tells him. “Why not? Who knows how long it could take for me to fool someone into living with this forever?” He sucks down the last of his drink, feeling sorry for himself now. What if he falls in love and she moves in and Calum stops coming over in the morning to walk to their favorite coffee shop together, and stops picking Ashton up so they can go hike Runyon, and stops bringing Duke over like he owns the damn place and doesn’t care about the dog hair that Ashton has to hoover off his couch pillows? That would be terrible. Worst of all, what if it was Ashton that suddenly wanted those things to stop?
“I’ll live with you forever,” Calum says, too busy flagging down the bartender to intuit Ashton’s emotional crisis. He gestures to Ashton’s empty drink. “Another one of those, right?” His own is still half full. Maybe he didn’t really like Ashton’s better after all.
“Yeah, thanks man,” Ashton sighs.
Calum bumps his knee against Ashton’s, the barstool squeaking beneath him. “Ash, you’re gonna find somebody if that’s what you want. Anyone would be the luckiest person alive to be with you. Maybe we could do Italy after the tour wraps, we’ll finish in Spain so it won’t be far.”
The thought cheers Ashton a bit; that’s a decent amount of time to get on AirBnB and see what he can find that’s available. It’ll be nice to have something to look forward to, Italian sunshine and limoncello and the quiet.
“Mike and Luke will definitely give us shit though about planning another honeymoon while we’re still on this one,” Calum says.
“Let ‘em,” says Ashton.
*
It’s not a long flight but it’s a bit of a drive from there to get to the cabin. But Calum said he wanted something remote and quiet, so it’s worth the wait, the drive in the dark. There’s moonlight, anyway, and Calum took the wheel, getting them the rest of the way there in their little silver Prius rental. He puts on My Bloody Valentine and sings along, low and comforting to listen to after so many days straight of playing, of promo. Halfway through the trip Ashton thinks he sees a shooting star, maybe thought he dreamed it until he felt Calum’s soft nudge of knuckles against his arm, heard his quiet, “You see that, bro?”
The way gets bumpy, thick with trees, dark and hard to navigate once they turn off the main road. At the end of it all there’s the cabin, looming in the dark, lights left on for them and the key exactly where it’s supposed to be. It’s past one a.m. but they still give the place a wander, stopping at the largest bedroom facing the lake. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows Ashton sees trees, darkness, the black glitter of water under starlight. Calum asks, “You want this one?”
Ashton looks further and just sees more darkness. “It’s kind of unnerving at night,” he says. “Anyone could be out there.” The other bedroom has smaller windows, but the point stands. “Do you wanna just watch TV or something in here and then decide?”
“If we get axe murdered here I hope our ghosts come back and leave a one star review,” Calum says, but he’s already shrugging his duffel off his shoulders and kicking off his shoes.
The host left them a bottle of pinot grigio so Ashton pours up a few glasses while Calum strips down to his boxers and gets in bed. The boxers have cartoon pugs all over them. “I can’t believe that’s the lingerie you’re wearing for our honeymoon,” Ashton says, handing him a glass. “I also can’t believe those boxers even exist.”
Calum raises it to him in a salute and takes a sip. “These boxers are fantastic, but I guess if you want me to take them off…” he trails off, eyebrow raised, thumb hooked in the waistband pushing them down past his hipbone, then further until Ashton can see the crease of his thigh.
“No, no,” Ashton says hurriedly, “I’m just saying, what’s wrong with a nice pair of footie pajamas? Keeps you warm. Keeps you modest.” Nevertheless he shucks his own clothes except for his own (very grown-up, perfectly normal, in a flattering shade of dark green) boxers and joins Calum in bed. Calum’s already stopped paying attention to him, too busy trying to figure out how to work the remote. He finally gets the screen to flash on, and Ashton stays quiet, sipping his wine while Calum flips channels, finally landing on something in black and white. Cary Grant comes on screen but Ashton still isn’t sure what movie it is; Calum seems interested enough, setting the remote down between them, so he doesn’t complain. The wine goes down easy and Ashton does too after not too long.
He rolls onto his side and sees that Calum’s eyes are already closed. It doesn’t look like he’s asleep yet; it always takes him a bit, leaving him in a dozy stage for about ten minutes during which he might respond crankily to any communication or with adorable mumbling affection. Ashton turns the sound down and says, as quietly as he can, “TV off?” Calum’s eyes don’t open, but he nods a little. “Okay. You want me to go sleep in the other room?”
Calum moves then, a sleepy shift of his body, fumbling a hand up and blindly patting the sheet until he makes contact with Ashton’s hand on the remote and squeezes it, links their fingers together like he can’t quite figure out how to make it work. It feels nice. “’S’okay,” he murmurs. “Stay here.”
Ashton didn’t feel like getting up anyway.

The McKinnon Ranch
THE MAIN HOUSE
Tumblr media
Located east of the town Wilton in Northwest England, The McKinnon Ranch’s central point consists of a two story villa, where majority of its residents stay - including the war refugees. Apart from its vast array of bedrooms, the Main House holds a lovely French-style kitchen, a chimney connected to the Floo Network, a large common room area, two dinner tables, and an office with ten foot tall bookcases filled with a collection of novels, biographies, and magical encyclopedias, adjacent to the circular staircase.
THE COTTAGE
Tumblr media
The old English cottage beside the Main House was the first building on the McKinnon lands, originally serving as the home of Roderick and Jacqueline McKinnon (Marlene’s grandparents). As the estate expanded and the Main House was built, the cottage then served as the guest house for the McKinnon family household. Nowadays, Marlene lives there on her own. It holds three bedrooms, a bathroom, and a kitchen with a nice little dinner table. Her favorite parts about the cottage are the subtle, sweet mint accents on the building’s back door and window.
THE STABLES
Tumblr media
Roderick and Jacqueline McKinnon began their dream of having their own aerial equine ranch. Since their days at Hogwarts, they had always imagined working with magical creatures and when they found a patch of land available to purchase, they took their chance. For years, The McKinnon Ranch has focused on the humane breeding of Aethonan and Granian winged horses. Hired hands have a multitude of tasks, such as casting regular disillusionment charms, feeding, and training the winged horses. Majority of the horses are purchased by magical organizations, but a number of them are also bought out by individual wizards and witches or live out their lives on the farm.
THE GREENHOUSE
Tumblr media
The greenhouse is the personal garden and apothecary of the household, with a patio area in the foyer. Aside from providing the necessary fruits and vegetables for cooking, you can find an assortment of herbs - both muggle and magical - such as lovage, thyme, ginger, moondew, bubotuber, and dittany. You can also find several shrubs, like wiggentrees, umbrella flowers, and alihotsy, hanging along the walls.
THE MEADOW
Tumblr media
Running up and down the meadows was practically the backyard sport for the young McKinnon clan. Far behind the main estate of the ranch, just before you hit the woods, there are several hills, sprinkled with patches of daisies and aconite.
THE FIELDS OF CROPS
Tumblr media
One of the most recent developments of the McKinnon family business has been agriculture. They specialize on crops like wormwood and valerian, that require a high supply. However, there is one section of the fields dedicated to growing fluxweed, in specific supply for the Order.
THE WOODS
Tumblr media
The woods are not officially a part of the estate. However, they have become a crucial part for the Order. Shelters were built deep within the forrest for our werewolf refugees to live at with peace in mind. Not too far from the ranch, there is a beautiful secluded waterfall, which happens to be a favorite spot of the winged horses.
Full photo album of the ranch can be found here.

Adriatic Tour - September 2019
My fourth Rick Steves tour, and the second in 2019, was his Best of the Adriatic. A two-week tour taking in Slovenia and Croatia, with an overnight stop in Bosnia. Seeing three of the now seven nations created when Yugoslavia broke apart in the 1990s.
A Bit of History
Yugoslavia was created after World War I with the defeat of both the Austria-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. That changed in the 1990s when the regions started to breakaway to create independent nations.
Slovenia in the north is a member of the European Union and in the Schengen Zone. Thus my arrival in Europe in Munich was sufficient for my passport to be stamped. Slovenia also is on the Euro, so money I had leftover from my previous trip was used for the first several days. And, because of the borders, and the Schengen states, we seamlessly drove within Slovenia with a 30-minute drive into Italy on the outskirts of the city of Trieste.
Croatia and Bosnia on the other hand have their own currencies and tighter border controls. We went through customs and passport control as we passed through those borders. The Croatian Kuna is the Croatian currency with little acceptance of Euros. The tour made sure we did not need to have any of the Bosnian currency by having group lunch and dinner during our stop in Bosnia. Breakfast of course was included with the hotel. Luckily the gelato vendors in Mostar near the famous bridge took Euros or Kunas.
Slovenia
The main highlights of Slovenia was Ljubljana, the capital and Lake Bled.
Ljubljana is an old-world city with cafes and wide streets for easy walking. Clearly the Austria-Hungarian influenced the growth and culture of the city. I spent hours walking along pedestrian streets and into squares simply enjoying the ambiance of the city. One highlight was to see several buildings designed by a famous local architect, Joze Plecnik.  One currently is a high school that was a block from the hotel we stayed, and the other is a university library. The playfulness of the library is that windows are shaped as if they were open books.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lake Bled is within the Julian Alps and close to the Austrian and Italian borders. I’ve been told the only island in Slovenia is the small one in the lake with a church on it. A castle commands a high view from one side of the lake. After touring the castle, we were given time to stroll, hike, walk around the lake. That was a serene and beautiful way to see this marvelous place. Actually I did not walk totally around the lake but went about half way to 2/3 in one direction and returned the same way. So, yes, may not have walked all the way around, but covered the same distance. Preferred to stay in woodsy forest setting than ending up in the developed town by the lake. One note, a villa used by Yugoslavian strongman Marshal Tito now is a small hotel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other highlights of Slovenia is the beautiful vistas driving through the Julian Alps and a stop in the town of Kobarid to see a World War I museum. Several major battles were fought in the area and a young Ernest Hemingway served as an ambulance driver which he later turned into his novel A Farewell to Arms.
Tumblr media
It was during this final stretch in Slovenia that we crossed into and out of Italy in about 30-minutes.
Croatia
The bulk of the two-week tour was in Croatia mainly spending the time along the Adriatic coast from the Istrian Peninsula down to Dubrovnik.
Istrian Peninsula juts out into the Adriatic and is close to Venice and the Italian coast. Supposedly from the town of Rovinj you could see Venice on a clear day. Well they say that but I didn’t. There is a heavy Roman and Venetian influence in the towns we saw including Roman amphitheater in Pula.
Tumblr media
Rovinj
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three from Pula
Venetian influence is seen in Rovinj and Opatiija. As I walked into the warrens of the streets of Rovinj, I felt as if I was walking in Venice or a Tuscan or Umbrian hill town. It was as close to feeling in Italy without being there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5 photos of Opatija
The interesting note about the Istrian Peninsula is that the towns all have two names, the Croatian name and an Italian name even though it has been centuries since the area was under Roman or Venetian control.
Plitvice Lakes National Park is an absolute jewel. The tour made sure we entered the park early in the morning at one end that is not the usual entrance for tourists. The goal was to walk through the park which is full of lakes and waterfalls until we arrived at the main entrance. It was a six mile, 16,000 steps walk seeing amazing vistas and waterfalls all by noon! I don’t think my photos do it justice. At one point I mentioned to someone I was walking with that it reminded me a bit like Milford Sound in New Zealand. Within minutes heard someone going in the other direction say the same thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though the tour guide was specific about where we should meet near the end of the trail, we lost four women. I later said they saw the walk through the park as a race and not a walk. They were in front of all of us and took the wrong turn near the trail end. While we waited where we were suppose to be, they ended up walking back to where we entered the park! Of course we found them but had to change where we would have lunch since their misadventure forced a change of plans.
Split
One of the jewels of Croatia is Split. An amazing beautiful city nestled on the Adriatic. We spent two nights there (thank goodness, was able to get laundry done) and was absolutely beautiful. Was supposed to meet up with my ex-boss who was going to be there at the same time, but he cancelled on me. So I spent free time walking along the seaside walkway.
The main tourist attraction is the remains of the Roman emperor Diocletian’s palace. The modern city used the remnants as a base to build along the waterfront. One part of the basement of the palace that is intact supposedly was used in the filming of the HBO show “Game of Thrones.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was able to find the synagogue in Split which is barely used for services on Saturdays or for holidays.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Split is definitely a place I would return to if the opportunity came again.
Korcula
A two-week tour is somewhat exhausting so the last weekend we were given a free day on the island of Korcula. It is off the coast of Croatia between Split and Dubrovnik. To get there we had to take a ferry from the mainland. And we needed the break. Absolutely gorgeous with amazing views of the Adriatic. I had not planned on bringing a bathing suit to go into the sea but if I had to do it over, would have just to get into the Adriatic. As is, I was only able to dip my toes and hands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dubrovnik
The old city is an amazingly beautiful walled city. We were given a walking tour by a local who lives inside the walled city. Luckily we did the tour in the morning beating the crowds from a cruise ship that disgorged hundreds of tourists into the small area of the walled city. Clearly a case of over-tourism. There were more tourists than necessary for us to fully enjoy the scenery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The highlight of the day was walking around the city wall and seeing the city below in its full beauty. And, similar to Split, I was able to go to the synagogue which is now a non-working synagogue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bosnia
One of the “Wow moments” of the tour was our overnight trip to Mostar in Bosnia. Mostar sits in a river valley with high hills surrounding the city. It was from those heights that the town was shelled during the siege that devastated it during the wars in the 1990s.
The famous arched old bridge was destroyed - a bridge that was originally built by the Ottomans in the 16th Century. As the area calmed down and peace was relatively restored the bridge was rebuilt and is the main tourist attraction in the old town area. Locals will solicit money before diving off the bridge into the river. The crowds swell to see this sight. And, according to the tour books, so do the pickpockets. Luckily didn’t bother me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had a local guide, a Bosnian Muslim who described how she and her family survived the shelling and the siege. At one point when the bridge was destroyed, her family was divided by the river without contact from the other side for weeks. She recalled her brother still has shrapnel from a shelling that also killed her uncle. We saw numerous buildings still with signs of being damaged from the war.
She was not enthusiastic about the peace accord that ended the war. The agreement was brokered by the Clinton Administration and established a couple of autonomous ethnic zones, especially one for Serbians. She felt that has led to a country with multiple presidents and a lack of cohesion as a nation. However so far that agreement has held.
Observations
This was a region of Europe on my “must see” list for some time. Now I can go to other parts of Europe without wondering will I get to the Adriatic area. A member of the tour said to me that it is a tribute to Leila that I continue to travel, something we loved to do together.
Loire Valley and South France in spring 2020 and South Italy in October 2020 coming up.

THE BEST OF TIMES – THE WORST OF TIMES
(I recently read that a single COVID 19 is 10,000 times smaller than a grain of sand – which may or may not be precise but certainly helps put this ‘invisible enemy’ into perspective.)
Colin and Alison Cameron are the parents of a very dear friend. They live in the Royal Burgh of Irvine – a smallish town on the west coast of Scotland, around 25 miles south of Glasgow with an indigenous population of about 35,000 souls. As a couple they have been married 63 years and find themselves in good health, all things considered, while approaching four score and eight years on this verdant planet – their birthdays are eleven days apart with Colin in the role of ‘Toy Boy’.
The loss of freedom’s privilege experienced by all involved in the Second World War – during which these two stalwart growing Scots entered adolescence surrounded by propaganda, fear, heroism, rationing and loss – developed a sense of survival and optimism (most prominent) among the young that would reach mature relevance in the 1950’s, resulting in an innate desire with the many to re-build a better and more egalitarian world.
Alison and Colin proved to be true pioneers of this ‘Golden Generation’
Educated and married within the environs of an aspiring middle-class suburb of Caledonia’s biggest city, (a part of Greater Glasgow, this town is on the north side of the River Clyde with the somewhat uninspiring name; ‘Uddingston’), they were pierced by Cupid’s arrow at school and have been together ever since.
In 1957, almost immediately following their legal betrothal, the couple hardly had time to enjoy a honeymoon before finding themselves on a six week boat journey to the landlocked East African country of Malawi – 118, 000 square kilometres of land and fresh water previously known as Nyasaland which was colonised by the British in 1891.
Colin – who was by then a graduate lawyer in Glasgow - had been offered and accepted a position at a law firm in Malawi’s district of Blantyre – home to the country’s second largest city, (also the commercial / industrial / financial centre), that unambiguously bore its Scots roots in a very un-Bantu name.
At the time Alison had recently qualified as a midwife and, as part of her consideration to a seismic change in geography and social circumstances, (as proposed by her now husband), replied to Colin’s enigmatic question of;
‘How do ye feel about delivering black babies?’ with a statement question; ‘Children are children, what’s colour got to do with it?’
This answer formed the basis of an ideal they both carried through their time in South East Africa and into the rest of life’s adventures – which turned out to be many and varied.
A seven year rollercoaster ride followed with Alison establishing herself first in a mission hospital and then in a Government medical facility while at the same time raising her profile to a level that caused the redoubtable leader of the country – Doctor Hastings Banda – to recognise her influence and importance as a care-giver to his country through inviting her to be his platonic consort at the high table for the Independence Commission celebration, (Colin was also in attendance as a Member of the Malawian Parliament and an effectual combatant to the unfair vagaries of British colonial and local law).
The reality of any country achieving its freedom from an imperial power tends to be coated in turmoil and disagreement. Colin and Alison proved to be among the victims of the chaos that surrounded Malawi’s departure from the body British.
The detail they describe regarding being given 24 hours to be out of the country or be fed to the crocodiles is fascinating in its, now, stoic retelling but one can only imagine the sense of terror this mother and father of, then, three young children must have experienced in a deplorable version of; ‘Hobson’s Choice’.
Their expulsion emanated from Colin’s unrelenting legal and moral pursuit of honesty and justice which Doctor Banda somehow found to be unacceptable in the creation and establishment of his new regime and personal pursuit of power. The fact the two men had had a cordial and friendly relationship for many years appeared to make no difference to the leader of this ‘new’ country.
(If you’re lucky enough to share a coffee, whiskey or brandy with Colin and Alison then I would recommend you sit back and take in the background to this banishment and the desperation of the resultant flight while being prepared to experience an appropriate sense of awe and shock from the narrative.)

With little or nothing by way of material or financial assets, due to the sudden and forced removal from the country of their African adventure, a return to Glasgow was the singular option. The displaced couple and their young family benefited from parental assistance in re-establishing their lives to some form of normality - lives that found a home in Irvine and a level of prosperity based on a protestant work ethic and a sense of belonging.
Over time Colin established a successful local legal practice – within which Alison worked alongside him – and, in company with the many ups and downs this world has to offer, they watched their four children grow while preparing them for the slings and arrows of life as is incumbent on all loving parents. In the midst of this nuclear family ideal and the relative success of their commercial endeavours, a holiday casa was purchased on Spain’s Southern Coast in the idyllic Padron of Mijas.
-o-
Roll the tape forward to 1989 and set the scene with a backdrop of a glistening Mediterranean viewed through sundrenched tropical foliage from the picture windows dominating a veranda of a southern facing villa set on a small hill to the western side of Mijas on the Costa del Sol.
Colin and Alison are talking and the subject is their future and the disabling nature of boredom. They have reached that disparate age of nearly six years past a half century where slowing down in life is a serious consideration for many. The conversation ends with a pact to travel and work. Industry is applied to applying for overseas positions with any number of governments, charitable and/or philanthropic agencies seeking the assistance of experience and dedication.
In 1598 the Spanish explorer Alvero de Mendana was the first European to properly navigate the seas of Oceania and in doing he came upon a group of islands to the east of the coast of Papua New Guinea – whereupon he exercised the discoverers right and named the archipelago after a wealthy biblical King - as it was, in his view, a world of abundance.
1n 1989 Alison and Colin became the latest working guests of The Solomon Islands. For two years they ploughed away at what they were good at and any lingering feeling of declining relevance and apathy dissipated like thin smoke upon the wind.
With their return to Scotland Colin found a new vigour for the cause of Scottish independence and began an activism that remains to this day. Both their hearts still held accommodation for Malawi and both have been formally recognised by the progressive generations of leaders for the roles they played and what they achieved during those seven tumultuous years leading up to that country’s venture into independence.
But home had its own political fight and was in need of ground forces with a sense of history, fairness and a way to achieve it. Colin stood twice for election as SNP candidate, when it was neither popular nor profitable, while stamping his ideology on a town that would eventually mould Nicola Sturgeon into a leader of the SNP and the country.
-o-
Today the couple live in a small house in Irvine. Time has eroded the capacity for physical vigour to a certain degree - as it has a habit of doing to us all - but time is a slower master in controlling and diminishing thought and the facility to express.
I spoke via a Whatsapp video call to Alison and Colin on Saturday night of last week. While I cannot boast of knowing either of them well we have had a number of socially polite telephone conversations over the past ten months and on one occasion – in December 2019 - I listened to the most erudite of speeches given by Colin at the occasion of the sixtieth birthday his daughter, (and my confidant), Shona, (a surprise party organised by their granddaughter Michelle in a pub on the Costa and attended pre-COVID by a ridiculous number of happy people).
The subject of our conversation was primarily to be around the effect of the pandemic on their lives given they fell into the age bracket of being the most under threat from this ‘Invisible Enemy’. I had attempted to have the conversation the previous evening but Colin exercised his attorney privilege to prepare – seeking an adjournment on behalf of himself and his fellow witness Alison.
After a number of false starts – it was a WiFi thing – we managed to have a conversation over about an hour or so. Most of what you have read above was provided initially by Alison in considered timeline and factual background. Much of the detail came from Colin with intermittent interruptions from his wife to steer and correct.
Alison was philosophical and accepting in respect of the impact of enforced isolation, social distancing and the wearing of masks. Her medical and scientific background gave emphasis to listening to the experts and the exercising of patience. She has a controlled temperament when asked a direct or leading question and only really showed a level of distaste when the subject of Boris Johnson arose – a civil and polite distaste but distaste all the same.
Colin was prepared with a series of bullet point observations that he checked as he enunciated with care and lucidity.
The recklessness of people, (with particular reference to youth), in respect of the early days of being told to socially distance and wear a mask alongside the very real dangers to people over the age of 75.
The ensuing acceptance of restrictions by a majority following the first wave and at the commencement of the second wave - from which he took a degree of encouragement if not satisfaction.
The potential and existent desperate financial implications for so many and an almost guilty admission on his own part for how their domestic costs had reduced significantly while their income remained constant and was even about to rise due to a mandated increase in the government pension.
The loss of immediate human contact – particularly with their grandchildren – and the consequences related to any society deprived of distraction and interest from daily social intercourse.
The potential optimism for the effects of a vaccine with a caveat on the absolute necessity of political and commercial leadership to ensure a development of trust for medical science alongside an efficient distribution of the vaccine in a fair and orderly manner for there to be any hope of a return to relative normalcy
The effect of a creeping apathy towards preoccupation during lockdown – his home office still awaited much self promised attention in the way of, tidying, filing and editing the dictation of a book him and Alison were putting together about their time in Malawi.
I listened while he pronounced and understood this was a man used to addressing problems with a systematic consideration for cause and cure. His calculated expression of the situation held a passion but, I thought, was cloaked in almost professional brevity. I broached the subject of fears caused by the world being turned upside down through the spreading of a miniscule thing that made a grain of sand look like a giant.
Colin paused, as if deciding how much he could reveal of his inner self to this friend of his daughter and stranger of an Irishman. Decision made, he moved into a field of humanity made whole by an honesty found rarely and with a profundity in content.
He spoke of real concerns for himself and Alison, of how the thing we call Corona Virus was effectively a death sentence to them should they be infected and how his greatest terror lay in those who display any level of nonchalance to its dangers in the environment of people of his age and station.
His words weren’t delivered as a particularly emotional expression of his views and fears until he ended with telling me he was gone to bed every night for the last ten months with such a worry never far from his mind.
All of which served to remind me these two people had been through thick and thin together for more than 63 years, contributed what they could to society, stooped and built it up with worn out tools on multiple occasions, maintained a spirit and love that endured through the best of times and the worst of times and came through it all with a sense of national identity, familial devotion and the ideology of hope.
If that’s not a stupendous endorsement of the institution of marriage and the gift of love then I have no idea what is!
I ended the video call by eliciting a promise that when they had been inoculated and the potential to travel to Spain returned, they would grant me some hours of their company to, debate, argue, rectify and laugh at the problems of this planet while sipping something old and distilled.
-o-
(Tonight – Monday 25 January – is Burns Night – and I will raise a glass to two people in Irvine while digesting haggis, (the literal belly of the beast), and voice a salute that’s entirely Scottish: Slàinte Mhath Alison & Colin)
