hihi i wanted to do a quick breakdown of the differences between menhera, yami kawaii / yamikawa, and jirai ^^! i have seen some confusion and a lot of misinfo seems to get spread around super easy so ... !

menhera is a japanese slang term used to describe an individual with mental health issues. it means "mental healther" and comes from the term mentaru herusu from the 2channel discussion board on mental health! it has a higher connotation to women than it does to men.

yamikawa or yami kawaii is the aesthetic often associated with menhera ! as far as i know, it originates from yumekawa with a heavier focus on mental health, medical supplies, and dark topics! it came about as a coping mechanism for mental health issues. however, it did become over-commercialized at a point in time and there is a lot of discussion / critique about it!

jirai kei means landmine type. this originates from an insult in japan referring to people who look sweet on the surface but actually turn out to be explosive. it is most often used towards women, but there is a connotation for jirai danshi as well! this in particular has associations with a group called the toyoko kids, who are often homeless runaways with various mental health issues and addictions. jirai kei is also a fashion. the toyoko kids originally were known to wear something called girly kei, or more specifically dark girly kei. slowly, their own fashion began to form and it now has its own connotation with multiple different substyles.

this is just a very quick rundown since ive seen confusion between the three >,< it is not a comprehensive guide by any means !! if i got anything wrong please do correct me

I wanted to vent, but also ask an honest question. Since I was a teenager, I always wanted to work on character design. And one thing that always caught my attention was how I always preferred male character designs over female ones. My first thought was that I was always more into androgynous fashion and more masculine styles. But time passed and I came to the conclusion that it wasn't just that, and it seems that male characters can always be different things: fat, thin, handsome, ugly, short, tall, young, old, etc. and female characters, for the most part, fall into two categories: cute or sexy. I wanted some tips on how I can make female characters with more interesting designs, without having to fall into those two categories. I love your work and you managed to make someone else like the three musketeers <3<3

Hello ! That's definitely a good question and something I think about a lot. The bias towards beauty is very strong in character design and it takes a conscious effort to diversify output in that regard.

That sort of advice might be a bit obvious, but one habit I picked up from the director on my first feature film gig was to actually "cast" characters. Without reference, we tend to go for the kind of symmetrical face and "average" features mostly out of stylistic habit. I like to look at character actors with distinct faces (I like this pinterest page that has a lot of faces in one place) but also just acquaintances or pictures of random crowds.

When designing a character, at first I'm always building a big reference board trying to decide what Type of Guy (gender neutral) I'm going for, trying use photos rather than other people's art, because I want to rely on automatics and graphic symbols as little as possible. Whether I'm designing a man or a woman or other, I use references of fashion styles and people across the board in terms of gender so I keep the scope open. Sometimes a character ref board for me will be a picture of one of my aunts next to a bunch of screenshots of Columbo. In my experience, a lot of the times, it's mostly about going with styles and archetypes the same way you would for a male character, and switching it up somewhere along the way by looking at real women in your life and beyond as a grounding mechanism. Sometimes that will mean changing almost nothing, because the borders between genders and how you characterize them is blurry and fluid, and sometimes it will mean using features that are uniquely tied to some sort of female experience.

I enjoy realism and I think getting more proficient at it did help me diversify my designs (I find that more difficult to do with more minimalistic styles). Still, I am mostly a fantasy artist and in my case that comes with some amount of stylization and idealization of shapes and looks. I'm far from perfect in my biases and I'm not going out of my way to draw "ugly" characters because that doesn't mean much to me ; I try to draw inspiration from the faces of every day people and I associate it with my love for fashion. It's also worth noting the work I post here for fun is a lot more hash tag aesthetic than the stuff I do professionally where diversity is much more important.

I don't know if any of that is relevant but that's definitely an interesting topic ! I'd love to know others' perspective and tips on the matter.

A guide to being the local fashion icon 🐆

1. THRIFT THRIFT THRIFT!

I am someone who lives for unique clothing. My biggest tip ever for anyone who wants to stand out and be more fashionable is to start thrifting. Not only is it beyond fun this is a place where you can get pieces no one else has for CHEAP. nothing feels better than finding ur dream clothing piece at a thrift store. And you can get high quality clothing for way cheaper than a new poor quality item you get online. I’ve thrifted since forever so I might post thrifting tips soon.

2. Do a closet cleanout

It is so important to get rid of clothes you won’t wear anymore. I struggle with this and found myself keeping clothes as “backup” so much that I ended up with filled to the brim drawers full of clothes I find extremely ugly or that I just didn’t ever wear anymore. And this caused me to forget the nice clothes I have and only wear the same outfits all the time because I couldn’t find my other clothes. So GET RID OF CLOTHES!

3. Find your staples

My staples include black boots, leather jackets, denim jackets, and a few good pairs of jeans. Now this can be completely different for you. You need to figure out what the items are most needed for the outfits that go with your style.

4. Avoid shopping on SHEIN

Hear me out. I used to be a shein addict and I know how addictive it can be to buy cute clothes for cheap. But I just don’t find it worth it at all anymore. And I don’t even own any of the hundreds of clothes I bought on Shein anymore because the ones I wore often got ugly crazy fast. I hate to be the one to say it but you can almost always tell when a clothing piece is from shein. Now you do you, but if we’re talking about being that it girl, the one who always looks so cool and stylish and somehow nobody does it like her, buying quality clothing is key. Trust me you can find a better option at the thrift for almost anything you’re buying from shein. Shein also mostly sells clothes that will go out style in a few months.

5. don’t put yourself in a box

Create your style without trapping yourself in an aesthetic. The beauty of fashion is you can always try new things and be creative and express yourself through it. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Wear something a little different every now and then if you feel like it. You don’t need to dress a specific way all the time.

6. Find inspiration

One thing I like to do is to write down the people whose style I like so that I can get inspiration from them and see what I can take away from their fashion choices. Another thing I do is making a Pinterest board for every season every year that way I can look at it when I want ideas.

7. Shop with a goal in mind

A lot of the times we end up buying things we barely wear because we bought it just for the sake of buying something. I like to keep a list of things I really want t and look for those specific things when I’m shopping to avoid buying things I don’t actually want.

8. Add a bit of color to your outfits

Look, I am someone who literally only ever wears neutral colors. But the times I choose to add a bit of color to my outfits it upgrades them so much. I mostly do this with red because it’s pretty much the only bold color I don’t despise. But a bolder color can really make ur outfits stand out so much more. This works best if it’s only 1 specific part of ur look.

9. Accessorize

I know we hear this all the time but accessories really brings an outfit together. You can have the most basic outfit, but if you add some jewelry, a bag, and a pair of sunglasses it suddenly looks not basic at all. Or maybe you add a cute belt. Accessorizing is key to spicing up your outfits.

10. Find a makeup that fits you

Recently I’ve been loving a 90’s makeup look. I think finding a makeup style that suits you changes everything. I don’t feel complete if I’m not wearing some lip combo. So try out different makeup styles and see what you like best.

11. Have one interesting factor in ur outfit

Having one thing that stands out from the rest of ur outfit makes it so much more unique. This can be anything from a pattern, to a texture, to a color etc. having only ONE is important because it makes your outfit interesting but keeps it from looking messy.

Testing out some designs for my 70s AU!

Notes:

​ Sakura’s fashion (particularly Shippuden forward) incorporates both movement and style. I wanted to keep that here too, and what better way to express that than a jumpsuit?? I’m also biased bc I loveee jumpsuits and bellbottoms, lol. Her outfit is inspired by this one, though I changed the pattern in the middle to resemble that of a cherry blossom. Her hair was inspired by Donna Summer’s in the movie “Thank God it’s Friday”!

(Remembering when Kishimoto talked about referencing a karate outfit for her shippuden design while also being feminine. I love the idea of Sakura exploring gender through fashion, and I think team 7 would too (particularly Sasuke and Sai, where it’s more apparent).

I chose orange for Ino to 1) add in some color diversity in the line up and 2) earth toned were prevalent in the 70s. I noticed she wore orange as her casual outfit in the anime. I take it that she seems to like wearing secondary colors (or she just likes purple and orange). Her style is kinda more reminiscent of the 60s (I have a lot of Gogo fashion saved to my Pinterest board of her, lol), but there was a good bit of overlap between the eras (which tends to be the case throughout time).

Hinata was low key (high key) challenging for me to style for this au, just bc the aesthetic I originally had in mind felt so out of place in the line up😭. I had to start from scratch and try other styles while keeping it true to her, but I like the outfits I have for her now (all of them weren’t shown here).

Tenten usually wears red like Sakura, but I thought she would rock brown (and I was right), esp since it was a popular color in the 70s (along with other earth tones). Adding her accessories was fun too!

Dashi Masina Dachshund

Some general headcanons:

She/her, 34 years old, Bisexual (I dont know a lot about different sexualities, but that seems fitting).

Loves fashion (along with Kwazii) and their styles are the most out there compared to everyone else's. They modify their uniforms the most out of the crew, and Dashi has a particularly love for a pink, tropic, and techy aesthetics.

This is how I imagine her general aesthetic and/or vibe looks (Absolutely drop dead gorgeous) :

AfroAmer + Samoan ( original idea from @animalsalvationassociation ) grew up in Australia with her mother, who was a wildlife photographer. They traveled often but always returned home eventually. --- mother is Samoan, and father was AfroAmer

Her middle name : "Masina," mean "moon" in Samoan. I think it's fitting because the moon affects the tides, and having the moon in your good graces would grant you safe passage on the sea.

Was a pilot before the Octonauts, where she continued to travel and took photos of all her destinations. Even now, she sends almost all of the pictures she takes back to her mother.

( @hers-underwraps ) said she would be into meteorology, and that sounds very fitting.

Pirate!Dashi

AU Lore/Headcanons :

Is the Black Ice's Navigatior (like a Skipper). She pilots the ship and is the best at it. She could dock even the biggest warship on a dabloon if she wanted.

Met the Gentleman Blue (+ crew, which was only Tweak and Kwazii at the time) after she tried to steal his ship. Barnacles was impressed by her skills and bravery and asked if she'd like to join them. She agreed.

She is closest with Shellington (the new guy) and occasionally helps him with his alchemy.

Primary weapons would be something focusing on distance. Poison darts, throwing knives, and the occasional flintlock shot. Knives and darts are quicker than guns to reload, so she sticks to that. She doesn't fight often though, as on the rare occasion an enemy managed to get on to the Black Ice, they are quickly removed or killed before they can reach the helm.

Master of seduction and trickery. She knows she's drop-dead gorgeous and will use that to her advantage. (Because she's hot like that, and a pirate. She's gotta be a least a little evil and sexy.)

Nicknamed : "The Black Ice Siren"

Extremely competitive at card games/fun stuff they do on board in their free time. She wins most of the time, and it infuriates Kwazii (who is twice as competitive)

Weasley Siblings Giving You A Mani-Pedi! 💅

A friend of mine is from another country/culture and we ended up talking about mani pedis. I helped translate them, and I got to learn about their culture and how they view them. It was cute and wholesome! So it inspired this. ((Also it’s called projecting because when you are in a wheelchair you get self conscious, and also can’t get mani’s because of needing to roll and self conscious about pedi’s because of surgical scars

William ‘Bill’

As the eldest, you just develop a lot of skills. Especially when the baby girl of the family needs female support. As the designated ‘man with long hair’ he was the one to help her with polish a lot. So he would know what he’s doing, but would also want to keep them practical to. He would give you nails that would be simple, clean, but with top coats. Making sure they last, so you can enjoy them. He also gives you the full wash deal. He knows better than anyone. Also, he is 100% the grunge type to always have his nails painted black. He’s just the grunge aesthetic king. Black nails are his favorite. If you ask him to paint you little moons and stars on your fingers and toes, he will try his best. They always turn out stunning. Curse breakers have to have a steady hand after all.

Charlie

Hope you like nails that can stab a bitch. He has worked with dragons for so long, you’ll either end up with nails so flat you’ll never get anything done. Or nails so sharp you can use them for cutting the stems off flowers. Sharp, or dull. No inbetween. Hope you like dull toe nails and vampire finger nails. He is also a bit messy with the paint. That’s what cleaning spells, and cotton balls, are for anyway. He’s gonna paint them red every time, hope you know that. He himself doesn’t wear nail polish, because it’s never gonna last long anyway. He did, however, always join in with painting sessions with Ginny. He’s a good older brother!

Percy

He feels it’s to ‘femmine’ and just has an overly traditional view. So never expect him to sport anyway. He does, however, know how to care for his nails. He takes hygiene very seriously, so he would be happy to help keep your nails presentable. Cleaned, nail beds worked on, trimmed, and a transparent top coat to help keep them looking presentable. If he’s in the mood, a French tip will be on the menu. He just doesn’t care, beyond keeping them cleaned. His Percy, what else did you expect?

Fred and George

They are going to have fun with it. It’ll be messy, but it’s going to be so much fun doing it with you. Fred more than happy to do so, and will even ask you to do his. Same for George. They are twins, they love to be cliche and do matchies or complimentary in some fashion. Fred is the messier of the two, while George is able to be more neat and thoughtful. Definitely will work your toes, while Fred works your hands. Expect wild colors, and fun designs. Like glitter hearts, with little beads on them. They wanna have fun with it! They also have their nails painted, typically orange and purple in some fashion. They also love doing gel stuff for meetings, and business events. It’s fashion, and colors. They are the Weasley Twins. Gender conformity? I hardly know her!

Ron

He has no idea what he is doing, please send this man some help. He doesn’t know the difference between gel, and a top coat. He’s mixing the colors, he’s gotten it on his clothes, HERMIONE HELP-! He’s trying his best, but he just has no clue. You’ll need to teach him alot, but he’s willing to learn! He does think it’s neat that you can have a ‘theme’ with your nails. Like paint them as the color of your favorite quidditch team. That’s what gets him on board. Your nails are gonna get so sloppy, but hey. Who hasn’t had sloppy nails? A lot of it will end up being you painting his nails. You are allowed to get more creative with his toes, since less people will see them. Baby steps.

Ginny

The girl of the hour. As a kid, she liked it alot. Helped her stand out against her brothers. Now? She has her own style. Given she’s a Quidditch star, it can be rather rough on the hands. She does, however, really enjoy the subtle styles. Like transparent glitters. That’s her favorite. Just a touch of magic, if you will. She would love to have you more of her model, of what she can do. Have you wear all the fun things she can’t. Like making ombré’s, and tiny designs. It’s a really great way to bond. It helps her with her connection with feminine side. It can be hard. Being raised by six boys, but also genuinely being a Tom Boy. Makes you have a weird connection to what makes a ‘girl a girl.’ So this helps her feel that connection. She loves it. A wonderful way to spend her time with you.

Hi! I’m loving The Prison of the Phoenix and I was curious about the dressing gowns that Severus and Remus have been gifted by Lucius. I’m really intrigued by the detail that these articles of clothing are quilted! They sound really comfy and luxurious to wear.

I was wondering if you would be willing to expand on the details of snupin’s dressing gowns? Perhaps even a moodboard of the silhouette and type of fabric? Do they have hoods? A sash? A wand pocket, perhaps?

Sewing is a hobby of mine, so I’m always interested in reading about textiles and the details in wardrobe choices of stories (and the same goes for food! I love eating 😆✨)

Oh you came to the right place. I ALSO love clothes, and it IS DEEPLY maddening to me that Severus has so few costume changes, and that he is a narrative voice that... honestly isn't going to spend much time describing clothes.

I pulled all the dressing gowns and dressing-gown adjacent garments off my master Malfoy Manor pinterest board... and I've never made moodboards before... but it sounded like a fun, aesthetic fall evening activity.

Lucius knows he's not going to get Severus into anything *too* crazy, so I took some notes from 1700s banyan robes and wrapping gowns. So lots of decadent, soft, draping fabric. Slouchy, open front. And yes, I think Lucius would go for layers of quilted fabric, because Severus always neglects lighting his fireplace, and as a result his house is always cold.

And yes, I am all about wizard clothing just almost exclusively having wrist-length sleeves, because everyone keeps their wands against their forearm in wand-pockets.

The dressing gown choices Lucius makes for himself are going to be a *lot* more elaborate, take more fashion risks, and be a little ah, sluttier. He's not wearing this stuff out, so this gets to just be him having fun. I see Lucius leaning into Victorian dressing gown cuts (he would have loved all of the authentically Victorian loud color and fabric choices.) There would just be a lot of antique clothing lying around Malfoy Manor, especially since you can magically preserve and repair clothes. Lucius would absolutely get a kick out of wearing that kind of thing. I also think he'd go a little international with his fashion. There's some asia in there, there's some ottoman empire in there. What says 'British Aristocrat' more than that?

In public, there's always a little bit of armor and a little bit of bite to what Narcissa wears. But when she's is in private-facing mode, with the handful of people she actually trusts... Narcissa enjoys going very soft and airy-fairy, or (when she's in the mood) - full on vampire bride. Her dressing gowns are a bit more 1930s glamor, with a lot of delicate details. (and Lucius ALSO buys her clothes, so some of these reflect a little more of his taste.)

Also, you didn't ask, but this is my quick mock-up of the clothes Lucius and Narcissa wear to the ballet in Chapter 6. I had Lucius in that crystals-as-water Robert Wun look, and Narcissa is in custom Givinchy ( I made the skirt longer.)

Lastly we have Tecna!

Design wise, I built off the original design and paste redesigns I have done. I definitely leaned more into Y2K fashion for all the girls, but with Tecna, I went for the Cyber Y2K aesthetic. I added more tech-y/digital designs here and there because I thought it fit the vibe, and I just thought it was cute. In the past, I had tried to give Tecna a cute, fitting, short hair that fit her, but I was never satisfied with it until this one. There's just something about the choppy asymmetry that is just *chef's kiss*

The glowing bracelet on her arm is connected to the MagicWideWeb but also acts as a heart monitor for herself. It helps tell her if her heart is beating too fast or if she is overheating. This is one of her drawbacks to her powers. She tires easily, mainly because, kind of like Bloom, she hasn't had her magic for a long time. Her ring has a mini microphone in it, and if she activates it and asks it a question, it will tell her it's results through her earrings. She especially uses it if she doesn't understand a social interaction or how to go about being social. Because of her health and the unknown reason why she has magic, she was isolated a lot and doesn't know how to connect to others.

Fairy transformation wise, I wanted to keep the feel of her original design, which to me was like functional magical sci-fi fashion. A lot of words, but mind you, I watched the show when I was Itty bitty, and I'm pretty sure those words were actually written down somewhere XD. I know a lot of people love her helmet. I also do so, so I kept it in the design, just made it rounder and more fitted to her head. Though I loved her original wings, they always made me giggle in a good way, I made her new wings that mimic a circuit board. I also added more green to the design as little jewels and accents in the armor part of her outfit.

Headcanons!

• Tecna has the first artificial heart in all of Flaemterna. No one knows how she got her magic, but it is seen as a blessing from the Great Dragon.

• She is not a princess, but she and her family are held in high regard because of her magic.

• She is closer to her grandmother and younger brother than her parents.

since landing is closing down soon, i decided to take a quick break from SUPERSTRUCTURE (although i will be back don't you worry two fans) and made some fashion moodboards for the 14 fears from the magnus archives to accompany this post there will be some notes and insight on each collage under the cut.

the buried: the buried was really underutilized in the podcast imo. some of my favorite episodes revolved around the buried like lost john's cave and we all ignore the pit. i really hope this did it justice since jonny sims did not.

the corruption: oh my god this one was so hard to make. my google search history is full of terms like "bug infested dress", "moldy clothing" and "yucky fashion" the corruption girlies really seemed to like my last post so i felt obligated to get it right. i think i did okay.

the dark: making a black on black collage look decent is really hard 😭 I was originally going to go victorian for this one but ended up doing nu goth instead since I thought victorian fit a lot better with the end.

the desolation: this is one of my favorites. there's somthing so satisfying about combining ashy greys and black with orange it just tickles my brain. other than that, i don't really have any notes

the end: as mentioned earlier, i went with victorian mourning wear for the end. i mean queen victoria herself was in mourning and only wore black for forty years. that era is so synonymous with death it only felt fair to work its customs and fashion into my end board.

the eye: eye avatars are legally required to wear academic fashion. it just comes with the job description. i don't make the rules. have fun being jonathan sims

the flesh: this one really took me down a rabbit hole. first:, i could only find those anti-vegan shirts that your unemployed uncle wears to the family barbecue and then i came across this fashion designer and spent like an hour on her shop trying to figure out how she got her clothes to look like that. after that it took me another two hours to find all of the accessories. pinterest has been both my best friend and worst enemy over the course of this project.

the hunt: i am so sorry the supernatural gas leakage returned to my home when i made this and I age regressed into being 15 again. when i was making this i pictured it more as the trevor and julia flavor of the hunt instead of say, daisy. god breast america.

the lonely: this one was pretty easy to make once i got a handle on the color scheme. the aesthetic of the lonely has always striken me as a romanticization of the melancholy. think wanderer above the sea of fog. So i gave this one all the things i would romantasize about my life at my loneliest, which is why there's a teacup and a heart locket. the book was also a part of that, but it also doubles as a recreation of a leitner by theponderingalpaca on reddit.

the slaughter: yeah yeah i know the slaughter is supposed to be about war as well as murder, but forgive me for not making a fashion collage about military uniforms. that's really boring. i had just watched woodstock '99 before i made this though and decided to go more for that angry punk/metalhead fashion that korn was wearing in that concert. them and limp biskit are the closest we'll ever get to irl grifters bone.

the spiral: i made this moodboard twice. i know its crazy that the fear meant to represent insanity is hard to pin down, but i think i did it better the second time around. the first one read too much as regular kidcore/decora for my taste.

the stranger: i had to do this one last. i could not for the life of me figure out how to make a circus/uncanny fashion board without just doing clown fashion. i'm still not entirely sure how i feel about how it turned out, but at least the masks are cool.

It's a common theme for my Emmrook ships that they bond through a silly hobby that Rook has and hides out of embarrassment, only for someone from the inner circle (usually Emmrich) to discover it and support them; or a silly hobby that Rook does not hide but might not always be taken seriously for, persisting regardless and infecting Emmrich with their enthusiasm.

Specifically:

Evaraas Mercar writes crime serials and submits them anonymously to a Tevinter paper. They are very shy and secretive about this side of themself, until Neve puts two and two together and presents her findings to the book club, and Emmrich realizes that Evaraas has based a character on him. I have written a whole fic about it!

Hjördis Laidir has a flair for the theatrics, specifically dramatic storytelling with magical effects. She takes advantage of camping out in the Fade to put on elaborate shows with spirit actors and illusory backdrops, often featuring parodies of the villains the team once encountered. Other shows are recreations of her escapades with the Lords of Fortune. She does not force anyone to be in the audience, but Manfred and Spite are both delighted to watch, in their own way, as is Bellara. Emmrich, for his own part, is utterly giddy to be swept off in a world of adventure, like an enchanted princess on Hjördis' magic carpet ride. After learning the truth about Varric, Hjördis grows ashamed of her storytelling antics, because she will never measure up to Varric's legacy, but her companions reassure her otherwise.

(She also likes playing board games with Johanna's skull, though she cares more about Rule of Cool than about dice rolls. I don't think Johanna minds, as you can hardly go more Rule of Cool than turning into a giant skeleton).

Sataa Mercar was raised by her overprotective adoptive parents as a very sheltered, airy fairy maiden, learning all the elegant arts like embroidery and music. Later, after running away to join the Shadow Dragons and seeing the true horrors and corruption of Tevinter, she swears off her "frivolous" hobbies as a vestige of her past life. Yet the music room at the Lighthouse beckons her, and eventually, she reveals this terrible secret to Emmrich (at the time, she is not as close to him as to some of her other companions, so it feels less painful to disappoint him). Yet he insists that there is a place for beauty and hope even in a dark, blighted world.

Da'Adahl Laidir is a former Sentinel who stumbled upon a group of treasure hunters in an elven ruin and ended up joining them to see more of the modern world. Like Sataa, she is spreading her wings and discovering herself after a sheltered youth, only in reverse: her mentors, Abelas in particular, insisted that the Thedas of today is a decaying husk, innately grim and filled with untold dangers. Yet she is absolutely delighted to discover all the little things that make everyday people smile. You could say that her hobby is cultural studies, and she is very passionate about it, to the point of being annoying, but thankfully, she has her Yapper Squad (Bellara and Emmrich).

Beata Ingellvar is into fashion and makeup, and also paints a little. Since she favors a flowery pastel aesthetic, with a lot of pink and sunrise hues, and is a gorgeous petite dwarfette with an hourglass figure to boot, many people assume she is too stupid for the serious and important pursuits of a Mourn Watcher. Nonetheless, she asserts herself with spunk and confidence, and Emmrich is there to cheer her on through very rare slips into self-doubt.

Lenore Aldwir has always liked alchemy, and while her hobby was recognized as valuable by the various groups she joined — first the Agents of Fen'Harel, then the Veiljumpers — she never actually *talked* to anyone about it, because past bullying for her appearance has made her withdrawn and guarded, and because some people assume, looking upon her with a mix of fatphobia and ableism, that she is some kind of "not all there" savant and can't actually talk like a "normal person". She has resigned to being dismissed as a stupid, weird creature skulking in the background while normal people live their lives, and rarely speaks up even among her companions. Assan and Manfred are a different story; they will never judge her, and she often rambles to them about the formulas she's mixing while they watch her work. One day, Emmrich comes looking for Manfred and finds him listening, enraptured, to one of Lenore's alchemy lectures. She is mortified, because Emmrich is an actual academic and she is self-taught, and swears she did not mean to disrupt Manfred's studies and steal him away... But her fate is sealed. Emmrich is officially in love.

Vashkost Thorne is a cheery, larger-than-life Grey Warden whom Evka and Antoine rescued from a Tal-Vashoth cult that was trying to achieve ultimate strength by drinking darkspawn blood (not unlike the Antaam would soon do under Ghilan'nain's guidance). A lot about her is inspired by Karlach — the one broken horn, the unrelenting friendliness, the boundless optimism born out of living on borrowed time, the occasional bursts of righteous anger — so her silly little hobby is making plushies, in honor of Clive! I hc that she kisses both Emmrich and Bellara, who get soft, handcrafted gifts. (Manfred gets a teddy bear that's almost as big as he is).

Otrera Aldwir is a Veiljumper for gameplay reasons, but her "true origin" is a former agent of the Inquisition. Harding took her under her wing when, 10 years ago, Otrera was exiled to the surface from Orzammar for catching a glimpse of the sun through the crack caused by the tremors in Descent. Originally, though, Otrera was a very dedicated young member of the Warrior Caste, and trained ardently to protect her city. A cousin of hers was a Silent Sister, and Otrera would often follow her around, acting as her sign language interpreter. This instilled a love of translation and interpreting in her, though right now, she does not allow herself to have hobbies, because whenever she finds a cause to follow, she throws herself all-in, without a moment of rest and reflection. Somebody make her put her sword down and read a nice book of translated dwarven poems or something.

The last two Emmrich kissers without a silly little hobby are Vitaar Laidir, a deliberately crude pirate who secretly longs to be loved (and recently discovered that the Fade shenanigans are turning her into a mage), and Araña de Riva, a mournful and brooding half-elf, half-Qunari assassin who was picked up by the Crows off the streets, where she was doing gymnast and contortionist tricks to earn some coin. I suppose acrobatics/parkour could be her silly little hobby, but she's come associate it too much with her job (which she hates).

What is Aesthetics? A Study of the New Art Movement that Art History is Looking Over

It started on tumblr [citation needed], we've all seen the "a e s t h e t i c" tags and all the blogs dedicated to the many many different types of aesthetics. I have spent the better part of 4 years collecting, studying, and categorizing theses aesthetics. I do have a formal education in art and architecture so I sort of know what I'm talking about. I'd like to share with you what I've found. I've also made a chart (link) of my findings. This chart is very rough and not meant to be taken as fact. It is how I've categorized almost 700 different aesthetics but that is not even close to how many there are. I do plan on expanding it more. If I get some attention, maybe I'll make more posts that dive deeper into defining this new art movement.

In short, today's use of the word "Aesthetic" is a noun that refers to a title/word given to a specific atmosphere, emotion, feeling, or vibe that a collection of images evokes when viewed together. A comparable approximation would be a "mood board".

Anything can belong to a particular Aesthetic; an art piece, a song, an entire show, an outfit, etc. In my opinion however, its very rare that a singular work can express an entire aesthetic. As stated, an aesthetic is a very specific emotion. Thus, in most cases, a singular work (work here referring to any form of expression) is likely to be interpreted in a multitude of different ways. The only exception to this is if a particular aesthetic is based on a very specific motif found in a particular work that is unique to only that work and from there new pieces can be made that also carry that motif or relate to the original work that the aesthetic was built upon. This will be discussed later. Not every genre of art can express an aesthetic, for example, some aesthetics may not translate very well to fashion, imagery, music, etc. That is to say that it may not be possible to express the emotion evoked by the aesthetic through other mediums other than the original medium the aesthetic was created in.

In summary, an aesthetic is a collection of images that evokes a specific emotion. Most often, this emotion is evoked through the combination of particular motifs found in each work that contribute to an overall "vibe" or atmosphere. These motifs can then be used to create new original works that belong to this aesthetic.

There are a multitude of categories of Aesthetics that I have identified and some of them may seemingly contradict this definition. We will discuss these later. There is also much overlap between specific aesthetics, it is extremely common to find that an art piece may belong to multiple different aesthetics.

This is a very brief definition of the movement. But to fully grasp the depths of this new art movement, we will need to discuss a lot of art history and definitions.

6: What was the thought process behind their appearance? Did you go mostly for the aesthetic or are there other reasons they look the way they do? Elias' appearance has always been centered around portraying less common features in a positive light. my past houses put a lot of stress on my physical appearance, and making sure i fit into a specific mold, so! elias was designed to break that mold in whatever ways made me the happiest!!! at first it was just them having their wheelchair, and visible stubble while presenting incredibly femininely, and then over time it grew, and so did they!! Elias gets to be fat and happy and wear beautiful clothes that fit them, their chair gets to be personalized and decorated and loved, their stubble is as prominent as ever, and they're allowed to be happy about their curly hair!!! As i had Elias get into dye-making and pigment research, I also wanted to show that too. Elias gets to wear bold or saturated or vibrant colors, and they also get to show off all the stains that their work accumulates!! I chose Mauvine to be their main color because that was the first Analine Dye made, and what better color for a dye scientist to wear? Some people think Elias is messy, but people who knows dyes and colors would recognize it for what is it, which plays well into Elias' whole 'sweet ditzy socialite' facade (not that they aren't a nice people person, but theres far more to them than that). Marigold was words first and foremost, so when designing them I wanted to put thought into how the Gardens would affect their appearance. I also wanted to get across the feeling of someone who has been touched by horror and tragedy. Beauty couldn't save them from all that they went through, horror and tragedy can happen to anyone. They're still beautiful, they just need extra care now. I really wanted their appearance to emphasize all they went through. Their eyes are entirely pupils now, no iris, and have turned the color of honey, based on some text about being honey-mazed, the saying about eyes being windows to the soul, and that part of Marigold has literally been consumed and taken away. The veil hiding their tears and dark rings is about how easy it is to not look deeper, to miss abuse happening behind closed curtains, even though it shows through the bug-holes in their net. I wanted Marigold to look like I had taken someone off of a fashion-plate and tossed them through a bramble patch. Their clothes pretty, but all tattered and deteriorated, the same as their owner. Marigold's hair color is because. Well/ Honey. Strawberry-Blond. Just fitting into the color scheme. The red bow was because I wanted it to be clear that someone owns them, someone who is seemingly above such things, and that the bow is the only part of their appearanc Marigold has the strength to take care of anymore. Marigold is also my only skinny oc, and this is on purpose. I wanted their bee and flower motifs to reflect their living situation Thursday I wanted to be pawn-shaped. I wanted their position as a Pawn on the board to affect everything down to their very appearance. Mostly I've just been fiddling with their color palette, trying to get things right and have them all look good. I think??? I'm finally happy??? So I just. Dipper and Mabel have had time in high school to grow more comfortable with a little more independence, but don’t want to leave each other behind entirely

So they wind up going to colleges that are nearby each other but not to the same school

And they wind up in Oregon to be closer to friends and whatnot

I'm an Oregonian so I'm allowed to have opinions on their school choices

Mabel goes to PNCA and gets a bachelors of fine arts with a minor in fashion

Dipper gets into Reed and decides to go there because he isn’t really sure what he wants to do with his life yet

His application essay is about the life skills he learned from cryptid hunting and it’s pretty good. admissions people think he's doing a creative writing exercise but he means it entirely seriously.

Mabel is a little jealous of how proud of him people are over this but shakes it off. She has a Plan. And he’s her brother, she’s also proud of him.

I know people like to HC him going into film because he talks about wanting to do a ghost hunting show(?) But to me he’s too plan-oriented and anxious to really feel comfortable with gambling it all on Hollywood

So he goes to a liberal arts school to be able to figure things out some

And discovers that while he is a nerd, he’s not as in to physics and the like as Ford is.

Instead he likes puzzles and mysteries and putting things together

And I think he has a knack for archive research

So he winds up falling into a history program

And graduates with a major in History and a minor in Film and Media Studies.

His thesis is something on the role of espionage in the Cold War.

Area man learns how to file FOIA requests, uses this knowledge liberally

After College

Mabel is ambitious and believes in herself and her art career Takes Off

She does lots of photography and fashion as big sculptural art

Her art never looses that quintessential Mabel maximalism, but it does gain a really biting angle of social commentary.

Dipper wears a shirt with buttons on it, which counts as formal in Oregon.

Stan wears his “Goodbye Stan” sweater and brags to anyone who will listen about how he has a Mabel Pines Original and when she’s famous it’s going to be worth millions

Ford reads a bunch of theory beforehand because he doesn’t know how to to talk about Art and he still doesn’t really but Mabel recognizes and appreciates the effort

Her first bit of work to gain national attention is a series critiquing the demands placed on models after talking with some people in the industry while on shoots

Dipper is initially a bit down about being overshadowed, but she never rubs it in his face

Meanwhile he gets gently encouraged to go for a PhD

Specializes in 20th century history

While he’s in grad school he starts a buzzfeed unsolved style YouTube channel

Mabel is his first subscriber

He winds up teaching university while keeping the channel running on the side. It never becomes HUGE, but it eventually gains a steady following as a kind of niche but much beloved project.

This suits him fine

He continues to wear jeans and a T-shirt to teach

He’s known as the absentminded and kind of weird professor, but he tries to help people out and he grades fairly so he’s a beloved eccentric

If anything happens to the cool guy who teaches a history of espionage course every odd year spring I will kill everyone in this building and then myself

How the hell do you find every accurate representative culture fashion for the avatar gang? Like it pains me the hell how people this good and hardworking can find these gorgeous cultural clothes and accessories and draw them so well and detailed like you- TELL ME YOUR SECRETS (Please)

idk about accurate. at the end it is still a fantasy world inspired by real life cultures contrasting or soothed out to fit a charakter personality and traits. listen if i spot an option to have a older fire lord zuko with his titts chest out i will go for it and nothing can stop me not even accuracy i say this as if i didn't already do it in private with seethrough material hahah

there is not much secrets behind it though, sorry its research, fact checking. often even the most random things. at least that is my method. you go to google and type in what you need and would like to know. read the wikipedia article for some general understanding on the topic but them go to the source part and check these out. or like double check these. if reading is not your thing there are lots of dedicated youtubers or ticktockers that love to share and explain parts of their culture or tradtions (clothing included. depends on what you research.) contemporary to that or after that you build up your visual library by collecting images on pinterest, or google or websites covering the topic you are researching. make your own folders or pin boards.

of course you have an easier time with some research than with other. some things are clear others a contradicting some are barley documented. it is also necessary to have an occasional reality check. like reread your sources see if there is something new. replace what you misunderstood before. don't always go for what looks pretty and aesthetically good to you. there is a reason why things looked like they did. was it the material, was it protection, was it culture.

a part looking at contemporary photography i personally preffere to look at how people liked to depict themself at that time. Statues, wall painting, illustration, old fotos from that time and compare them to current pictures to see how they used to stylize this element or to see what was essential to them. thats probably my old art-history phase flaring up again though hahah. at the end it is also how you Interpret and headcanon the atla world for yourself. before i were able to redesign jet i had to figure out how i want to draw fire nation armor. because to me jet repuporses a lot of the armor from the enemy. a shin guard will be used as an arm protection. the red shirt he wears is fire nation, a shoulder guard that fits will just be used as it is. i just assume that FN armor is better in being fire resistent than earth kingdoms ones.

but fire nation armor is a chellenge on its own again. because is it tang dynasty? is it song? but the collar protector is a typical thai armor element. how do i combine that? is there a history behind it?

speaking about armor what would be the southern water tribe one? if it is lamellar ivory armor, how and why does it look so different by season 3 at the day of the black sun? did the southern water fleet separated form their home begin to adopt EK styles. switching out kuspuk and parkas in for sleeveless wrap shirts and armor with inside plating like they have in ba sing se? because that what was aviable to them?

(appart everything the talk of armor is in general really curious because... what do you wear when you go in to fight against fire??? in the poles you can argure that it is not a concern. if you burn you roll in the snow but in the EK... hm.. they dont have fancy heat resistand clothing like fire fighters have now.... armor is ment to cushion off impact and or slicing. our standard armors conzept can work well against earth-, water- and air bending (to some degree) but fire burns what do you idealy do against that? leather helps to some degree)

while the southern water tribe is clearly circumpolar people inspired (although lacking lots of world-building which you can kind of excusing it with... the war destroyed everything but also... uh.... its a nearly 20 year old show.... ) the northern water tribe shows korean or even mongolian elements. so what do you want to focus on? i personally like to make things connect because these characters live in one world togheter and trade and exchange happens. (yes even during a 100 year war or at least there had to have been a time of influence and the lack of exchange froze(*snorts*) this culture in time) you know... migration? and transition of style and life through out history.

maybe i overthink things to much for just drawing some clothes... -srugs-

hi everyone! welcome back :)

i hope you're having a wonderful day wherever you are. it's raining and snowing where i am and i'm hoping it just turns to snow at some point. i started working out today for the first time in a few months and wow, i was humbled. lol. i am a little out of shape but that's okay. i'm taking baby steps to get back into it and it feels good right now. i'm back to give you all a reading and without further ado, here are your piles. please take a moment to meditate on the question and pick the pile that draws you in the most. i hope you enjoy the reading :)

immediately, i am getting a creative energy from this pile. the first thing that comes to mind is something with fashion and texture. i think you might enjoy thrifting/shopping and putting outfits together. or putting outfits together like in a mood board arrangement with color coordination. you might also have an eye for thrifting and seeing something in clothes that others might now. for example, you might be the type to see an outdated shirt that doesn't really follow the trends pattern and cut wise but you play around with it and make it fit. you make it fit for you and make it look good. you bring it back to life. it feels very detailed and tailored but very beautiful as well. also very venusian. like it has to be aesthetically pleasing. there's something different about the way you do things creatively that stands out but i'm getting you might not see it that way. you might be hard on yourself for the way you do things because it doesn't follow the way of everyone else. it doesn't fit in with the trends. i'm getting that you're quirks are unique to you. just as you might not do things the way someone else does it, they won't be able to do things the way you do it. we're all born different and come ingrained with our own set of experiences, skills, and strengths. don't be afraid of letting yours shine.

i think the way you can give yourself love might be to embrace your individuality within your creations more. there is nothing wrong with the way you make your art and you'll attract the people that appreciate it just as you do when you embrace it as well. i'm also seeing something about the outdoors as well? perhaps your body and soul loves the outdoors more than you think it does and would love to go out in the sun, play in the water, or go out for hikes and walks. something along those lines. i think the earth and outdoors can provide more healing and replenishment for us more than we think and even just a 15 minute walk a day would be healthy and loving <3

are you being totally honest with yourself about something? i'm getting that you're not. the energy here is that you're very off balance and tired i would say. overburdened with work and the responsibilities of life and i dont think you know when to say enough. i see deep down that you're harboring a lot of resentment towards whatever the source of this is but you're good at keeping your cool. you keep it reserved and don't let it out which, yes, in some cases might be a good thing but, in the long run won't be so good for you lovey.

i understand that it's difficult to press pause on our responsibilities such as work and bills. but i think the way you can give back to yourself is to start constructing some more boundaries for yourself between work and your personal life. you need more personal time for yourself. time to relax and rejuvenate. if that's not possible, i see writing is also on the table as well. i think you should try this regardless and discuss how you're feeling each day, describe what your day was like, describe how you would like your day to go etc. i enjoy writing and just letting my entire thoughts write themselves on the paper without too much thought. it helps me to see everything clearly and understand how i am feeling. i also find that i will feel better after writing like this too and it might benefit you as well. i also think you need to be honest with yourself about what you can and cannot handle. don't take on projects and extra work because you're worried about what people might think if you say no. screw that. you matter more. your self preservation matters more. prioritize yourself. there is nothing wrong with that at the end of the day and if all you can do is the bare minimum. do that. you're doing your best and that's all that matters <3

pile 3, i'm getting similar energy from pile 2 here. your energy is overburdened and heavy but i think for different reasons. i feel that you might not celebrate your individuality and kindness enough. you might be the kind of person that is more than willing to give kindness and love to others. you're always celebrating other people but perhaps don't match that energy with yourself. and i think the way you can give back love to yourself is shower yourself with love and let yourself shine more! i'm getting some venusian energy here for you and i think you may need to embody that more. i think you could do well with romanticizing your routine. some things that i am seeing for you is giving yourself more baths and perhaps adorning them with flowers such as roses, oils, salts etc. maybe lighting some warm scented candels while you're in the bath as well would be nice. i think you could also benefit from some loving affirmations to yourself and mirror work. saying affirmations to yourself before bed or saying them to yourself in the mirror. i don't know if you're the type to do your makeup at all but if that's something you enjoy, i think you should use that to your advantage and play with it more everyday. it's fun to be expressive through makeup and maybe this is something that would help bring you out of your shell.

i will be honest pile 3, your energy is difficult to read. it's reminding me of the hermit energy a little bit so i am surprised that this card didn't come out in your spread. but i do see you hiding yourself quite a bit and you're on guard with your personality. but you have a vibrant one lovey. you're not meant to hide. its hard to constantly hide who you truly are and i have to emphasize that it will hurt you in the long run. don't be hard on yourself and know that you're loved and will continue to find people who love you wherever you may go. you bring unique things to the group that others may not possess.
