Alright, we're putting down some ground rules.

First off, my friend SHANBO is the one who motivated me to do this at all, and I nearly went with her "The Clash" Inspired 'The Only VG Music Blog that Matters', but as great as that is, I respect the work of other VG Music blogs. I'd never hear PLOK's OST were it not for them. I figured there's no better way to emphasize my own priorities with this music blog than in it's very first post- Everything I post will be related to video games in some way. I will be generally avoiding music that is created for another project, that is used in video games. Think Tapes in MGSV- I would love to throw Rebel Yell, but that feels like cheating. Just as well, as much as it pains to me say, music that is specifically inspired by video games, but lacks any of the melodies from them, is off limits. No Protomen. But, covers, vocal additions, and remixes, are fair game. Babylon 5 Rewatch - A Voice in the Wilderness (Part 2)

This is a post I originally wrote several years ago for Mark Oshiro’s Mark Watches blog. I don’t really plan to edit them before posting, so there may be some references that don’t make sense. If you see words that look like gibberish, they are actually rot13, which was our way of discussing spoilers. There are plugins you can install to decode the text (Cryptext is the one I use), or you can copy/paste to rot13.com, or just ignore it.

Overall, I’d rate this two-parter as being fine. Nothing really stands out as exceptional for me (except the B5 Mantra in part 1), but there is nothing I particularly dislike either. I don’t mind watching it, which is good because it sets up certain things down the road, but there are definitely better episodes. Now that I can talk about the main plots, I find that I don’t really have much to say. I find Captain Pierce irritating, but then again, you’re supposed to. One of the most annoying things about him is the fact that it’s actually not that bad of an idea to have a warship as backup in this situation, as we can see once the alien ship shows up, but Captain Pierce is entirely the wrong person for the job. In fact, he’s so much the opposite of the kind of person you’d want on your side in a situation like this one that he’s almost a caricature.

We find out in this episode (or at least, Draal guesses) that the reason Varn appeared to Londo, as well as to him and Sinclair, is because the three of them are most familiar with the third principle of sentient life—its capacity for self-sacrifice. I can definitely see this applying to Draal and Sinclair, but Londo? What do you guys think? Does this characteristic apply to him?

In the same scene, Delenn warns Londo seriously, “I don’t think you fully understand what Draal is asking of you.” Londo replies, “One of us will not return, yes?” This scene is trying to be super dramatic, but come on. Draal is clearly the redshirt in this situation. Not only is he the only one of the three not in the main cast, but he’s even come to the station already in the process of letting go of his old life. Attempt at creating tension: unsuccessful.

I suppose I should talk a little bit about Garibaldi’s story in this episode. It’s interesting that early on in part 1, there is a scene which really emphasizes Garibaldi’s interest in Talia (in a weird stalkery way), before dropping the subject entirely for Garibaldi to focus on this old relationship. I do like that when he asks Talia for help, there is some acknowledgement of the awkwardness of the situation and that he is completely professional and polite. This is the Garibaldi I like, and I suppose we’ll have to wait and see what effect, if any, this little interlude will have on his behavior towards Talia.

One more thing about this subplot: Garibaldi finally manages to contact Lise, and she starts to try and tell him something, but he interrupts her because he just has to get his confession of love out before he loses his nerve. Oh, Garibaldi! Don’t you realize you’re in a work of fiction, and in a work of fiction nothing good can come of interrupting someone who is trying to tell you something? You could have been saved the embarrassment if only you had recognized the trope!

Favorite scene: This episode has a few great lines scattered here and there, but not really any extended scenes that captivate me. If I can be permitted to link two short scenes across a commercial break, I’d pick Londo piloting the shuttle. He’s so clearly having a blast, but, whoops! he’s a little out of practice. I’ve started a XIII-themed recipe card/notepad project that I’m going to estimate will either take me four months to complete or an entire Year.

I’m guessing it’ll be the four months, but IDK. I’m amazing at procrastinating.

Anyways, I’m still trying to math out the sizes. I’m gonna have them free to download for people to print at home.

I don’t want people to waste paper printing them one-by-one, so each paper will have two (notepad) or four templates (cards) on a 8.5 x 11 in. US letter-size paper (also, they’ll be awkward sizes because of this lol). They would need to be cut down to their correct sizes.

They’ll have hole punches along the top where they’re intended to be tied or bound with metal rings (it’s supposed to be like a flip book thing). I’m thinking… four holes should be good? I’ll have to test this on my own (reminder: buy binder rings).

Ofc, that would mean people would need metal rings and a hole puncher on-hand… and scissors. (Note to self: find out what size hole I need to make for a standard hole-puncher.)

So, I’ll also prepare a file without the holes, so people only need to have them cut.

It’s fun to think about. I was looking up recipe cards and wondering if mine will be too big and/or small? Like… some recipes have LONG ingredient lists (usually comprising of spices) and wordy directions. And unless you write small and illegible, I feel like the standard sizes are too small for my purposes? This is largely for me, because I hate recipe blogs and their ten trillion fucking mobile ads.

Also, since it’s XIII-themed, there’ll be even less real estate for the actual recipe itself lol. I’m gonna try to keep it minimal though lol.

I also have a small box for people to paste pictures of their recipes on! I think having images would help so much more than having to squint to read titles lol. And if they don’t want to use it… well, they can just use stickers.

Oh and there’ll be a little line at the for people to write down dietary restrictions. I’m gonna include a key for abbreviations as a separate page (i.e. D = Dairy, P = Pescatarian, V = Vegetarian, Vg = Vegan) with space for people to write down anything else I missed or didn’t know about.

So good to see old friends and readers, now my blog isn't always gonna be about Devil May Cry as I do like these deep dives whether you do or not. I've been in depression since early December but I'm feeling grander than ever! I'm happy to say that Uncharted 4 and RE8 helped a lot.

But I'm not gonna talk about the whole RE8 game...

I just wanna talk about one specific character...

Karl Heisenberg

First off, I love his name! Instead of being spelt with a C, it's spelt with a K! And the lastname alone is just fucking sexy!

From the information I've gathered (my observations, Wiki, and YouTubers), I couldn't help but find myself infatuated by him:

- He was kidnapped and subjugated to the Cadou Parasite Experiments (said in the Wiki and his diaries).

- Kept himself cooped up in his factory to work on his inhumane experiments for his rebel army (introvert, maybe?).

- Has a grudge against Mother Miranda.

Alright let's get this out of the way, I LOVE his appearance, he looks so rugged up and I just love it!

From his trench coat, to his hat, to his shades?! So adorable (nope, not hot... adorable...) especially when he says:

To be honest and blunt, he stammers and stutters before he starts yelling, an example of him not liking to be interrupted, which happens three times; by Angie, Moreau, and that experiment with the propellers ( can't think of his name at the moment).

Let's be honest, no one likes being interrupted when speaking...

Back to the Dive-in...

I was listening to a YouTuber called  Video Game Sophistry, who said that Karl Heisenberg was supposed to actually be a pair of TWINS, they'd both do brain experiments on their mother while his father was supposed to look like Karl during his boss fight... As well being the ruler of the land, not Mother Miranda... But capcom discarded that idea (glad they did)...

His body is made of electrical organs that are connected to his nervous system where he can pass and control electricity throughout his whole body, allowing him to control magnetic fields which moves the metal!

Mother Miranda didn't see Heisenberg as a good enough vessel for her daughter. Only seeing him like an experiment, which he mentions in his diary.

"She took me. Took us. To be her children. She locked us away in the village. Decades of serving her. Can you even understand that humiliation?"

It is extremely clear that his life was taken from him, but it's his next line that made me think...

"I'm not my siblings. I want nothing more than to be free of that bitch."

Wanting to be free, eh?

Sound familiar?

Yeah, Karl and Zoe have some things in common:

- Stuck with their 'families' for years

- Want nothing other than being free.

- Relying on Ethan to help them

Unfortunately Heisenberg dies before getting his wish... Zoe doesn't...

Gonna skip to the scene when Heisenberg explains his plan to Ethan... I don't know how, I don't why no one looks to the left...

But I did...

In red, BOLD LETTERS next to Donna Beneviento and Salvator Moreau's pic says and quote:

"BSAA COME!!"

Why does he want the BSAA to come to wherever he lives? Does he want to join them? Does he work for them secretly? Also, how does he know about Chris...? As well as American Ground Beef (That part makes me laugh as well as question him)...?

Like:

- Did he ever travel to America?

- Did he ever eat something that had ground beef in it (not all ground beef is used for burgers, guys)?

- Was he going to travel to America if he gotten free? Maybe keep a low profile?

We'll never know...

Another thing I've discovered while scrolling through the comment section of YouTube vids that have Heisenberg in it was that it didn't look like Heisenberg actually died, most of the time the characters would calcify and crumble... But he just exploded! No calcification, no nothing just... BOOM!

Someone also said that his 'form' looked like armor rather than a transformation... Which I had to agree on, it does look like armor!

The transformation even looks like a Splendid Royal Moss Caterpiller ( VGS even says it himself) which was supposed to move faster than the other Lord's transformations.

I was personally thinking he'd turn into a mechanical horse thus to his symbol, but, oh well!

top 5 things you learned about writing from breaking bad? (hope you're having a nice monday, congrats on the short story collection! please ignore this if you don't feel like it!)

characters can be unsympathetic but still engaging

in the mfa i had a professor who always offered critique along the lines of, “but is your character sympathetic?” that always bothered me, because i very rarely write sympathetic characters. my goal is always empathetic characters. i think the difference is that a sympathetic character is one you’re meant to like and root for, and an empathetic one is you’re meant simply to understand. 

i don’t like walter white. if you’re rooting for walter white by the end, you’re watching brba wrong. however, walter is still an extremely engaging character whose choices are all terrible but it’s clear why he makes them. he’s very shakespearean to me; his allure is in understanding his poor decisions and watching in horror as he faces the consequences.

and god, i can’t tell you how amazing it felt by season 5, to want the protagonist to suffer. i’m not one of those people who loves to hate characters, but i loved hating walter white. i loved rooting for the protagonist’s downfall. in hamlet, in macbeth, you understand why they do the things they do, but you don’t necessarily want to see them suffer. that’s why it’s a tragedy.

but breaking bad is the only story i’ve ever engaged with that isn’t a tragedy but the main character still dies. and you’re happy about it. like that’s the success of the plot, is to kill its protagonist. amazing. i remember reading an article with VG where he said of breaking bad, "You take Mr. Chips and turn him into Scarface."

you can slow down near the end (rather than speed up)

the biggest risk of the final season was the massive tonal shift in the final few episodes. it feels like a completely different show. even the direction is wholly different, and walter looks different, and the pacing is different, and i was just really blown away by it. i really think the end of breaking bad is the best series finale i’ve ever seen, and that’s partly due to how the pace just slows way down. it takes its time. it hits all its beats and does its victory lap, and then it ends.

no shock value. no twists. it goes exactly how you think it’s going to go, and it’s amazing. 

i’ve always thought that stories are supposed to speed up at the end once the stakes are all set and everything is just getting knocked down, but brba did the opposite and i thought it was fantastic.

no matter how abundantly clear you are, some people will always misinterpret you, and they are allowed to

this is something i knew before brba but offers the worst example of it. i have to remind myself a million times a day that fiction is always interpretive, and readers/viewers are allowed to draw their own conclusions about it, even if those conclusions are dead wrong. 

obviously, walter white has been heralded by toxic bros as being a hero, completely missing the entire point of the show. their perception is so widely known that i avoided watching the show for years, because if they loved it, i would hate it. it didn’t occur to me that the show was actually entirely aware of what it was doing.

it’s hard for me sometimes to realize that the picture most people have of me has to do with my fanfic and what i post on my blog, and that is actually a very narrow and ambiguous view of who i really am. i’ve gotten hate before that has made me think, how could you possibly get this impression of me? or, how could you make that conclusion about this story i wrote? 

making peace with being misunderstood is a big challenge for anyone putting their work out there, especially if that work exists to pose big moral questions like brba.

the pawn/king dynamic

you may remember me writing about my fallen knights archetype project. brba made me start expanding on that a bit and introduced the archetypes of the pawn (jesse) and king (walt). actually i managed to fit the entire show into the archetype heuristic.

the pawn: a character whose agency is stripped from him and whose morality, like the fallen knight, is dictated by a king character. the pawn differs from the fallen knight in that he is not a threat, and his greater occupation or mission is usually met with repeated failure. he exists to be used and discarded. draco malfoy is also a pawn.

the king: a character who builds empires and whose ambition eventually overtakes him. not necessarily evil but rarely good. the king’s arc is generally a major fall. 

to my first point above, i think jesse is a necessity in balancing the narrative. walter is *so* evil and *so* horrible that jesse tips the scales. even when he makes bad or wrong decisions, he remains sympathetic. by the end, you want jesse to live, and if he were to die, then the story would have been a tragedy. 

when you look at fanfic as a form rather than a genre, el camino becomes a fanon, not canon text

Mmm. Gonna be honest with Jasabeth. I do not care for it lmao. I mean, I guess??? But I’m way too deep into Valgrace to like Jasabeth, since they’re virtually the same thing but uhh, vg is fun 💀. Sorry anon, can’t say anything great about them this time. IMO, Jasabeth is just the straight, white, and boring version of Valgrace. And even if you didn’t like Valgrace (impossible) and you think Leo is too much (he is) and Jason should be with someone more serious (maybe), then Jasabeth is literally the same as Jeyna 😳? On Annabeth’s side, then just give her Reyna lmaoo, Jason’s just a dorkier version of Reyna. If you wanted Annabeth to be with someone dorky and a dude, then... Percabeth was right there... 

They had that one moment where they built off each other’s ideas nicely, but I think that should’ve went to Annabeth and Leo instead, or Jason and Percy, because... smart people shouldn’t be pitted against each other, and the other two were supposed to be pitted against each other so them adding to each other would be more meaningful. Besides that, Jason and Annabeth seem like the type to fight for the best grade in a class for three days and then Jason realizes he literally doesn’t care and Annabeth remembers she could spend the time doing literally anything else. 

TL;DR jasabeth is somehow simultaneously a boring version of valgrace/jeyna/percabeth 😩

One of the things I like about this story is the way you can see Sinclair constantly probing for more information and picking up on hints that Knight Two didn’t realize he was giving. He spends the whole time he is in that chair, not just trying to remember the Battle of the Line, but also trying to escape and not give any more information to his captors than he has to. And by the end of the episode, that includes Delenn. Although it seems that he still likes her, he realizes that he can’t trust her enough to reveal what he has remembered.

I noticed this time through that when Sinclair first realizes he has been kidnapped, one of the first things he says to Knights One and Two is, “Why are you doing this?” And when he finally starts to remember being on the Minbari cruiser, the first thing he says there is also, “Why are you doing this?” Fragment of repressed memory already starting to leak through, or just Sinclair’s natural response to the situation?
