Oh just for fun let's do some math.

Estimated 770,000 homeless people in the US. 20 billion divided among them is just shy of $26k per person. I think the original tweet US trying to suggest this would be a one time cost but since I cannot fathom how that's supposed to work out, let's be generous and say they meant annually. California's $24 billion works out to $42k per homeless person per year as of FY 2021-22. I'll let you tell me if you think homelessness in California has even been a little bit alleviated, much less eliminated.

Leaving aside how fun it must be to be a lefty who can just make up numbers at their own whim, throwing money at the problem indiscriminately isn't going to solve it. I'd actually be willing to talk about spending some money here but there are some conditions on that.

First and foremost, we have to acknowledge that chronic street homelessness is not in any way the same as someone who lost a job or got in an accident and fell behind on their bills. It is true that the latter group is the majority of the homeless population and we can help them with relatively little money to get them back on their feet and let them take it from there. But. Federal law prevents us from doing so and activists and so called advocates don't give a damn. They only care about the unlucky temporary homeless when they want to shame people who bring up the mentally ill addicts begging for money on the side of the road.

Those people are a whole different issue. They can't be simply put in an apartment and expected to thrive. They need significant help getting clean and treated. They also, largely, do not want that help.

Now personally I think it is abusive to say they are competent enough to choose a slow death in the elements while od-ing on something but the law says they are free to refuse treatment. Fine. Except the law also says we can't spend our resources helping the temporary homeless until we have helped the chronic homeless first. And the chronic homeless don't want help. So we can't do anything for the temporary homeless - again, the majority - who do want help and who can be helped pretty easily.

Instead we get to spin our wheels wasting time and money on people who don't want it and who we cannot compel to accept it and everyone else is left to fend for themselves.

That, combined with the weight of massive public and non profit sector bureaucracies eating up large portions of the money before it ever reaches the street, is why $24 billion later and California is no better off than it was. This won't change until we the law changes to either reverse its priorities or to allow us to compel treatment. Or both. If we did that, $20 billion a year probably does get us pretty close to handling the problem. It would certainly be enough to take care of the temporary homeless.

ok literally thinking about how id do star trek 2009 like i think it should start with the destruction of vulcan to both broadcast immediately this is a different universe and new things are happening as well as give more time for spock to go thru the grief of it and make it center stage or perhaps show like childhoods of kirk and spock first then jump into that but either way we are cutting the dead dad angst for kirk its so fucking stock and boring i hate it either go with his like genocide survivors guilt from tos or just generic bad parents thing i do think its interesting to make kirk kind of a fuck up and a rebel like in tos its interesting to make this kinda hero type whos brash and a bit silly have been a total overachiever nerd that bends expectations but i think introducing him as that overachieving nerd it feels like its saying you rando star trek fan in the audience whos a weird nerd this can be you which is just kinda lame so having it be him going from rebellious fuck up to more responsible gives him that character push and pull just in more of the opposite way but i do think that should have happened more in the academy like its really his last shot and he feels like hes gotta get his shit together because he will lose everything if he fails u know and also if vulcan is destroyed earlier i dont want spock to see it i want him to like just feel it and be so overwhelmed by it somewhat parallel to the motion picture opening and then the ship just disappears and then like more scenes at the academy and then also if vulcan is destroyed i think that makes the insane animosity between kirk and spock at the kobayashi maru make sense like spock has truly experienced that pain that loss and kirk cannot seem to understand it and thats what puts them at odds and honestly interesting how i feel like both 2009 and into darkness are trying to be the wrath of khan but i do think 2009 would make more sense if theyre on like a cadet mission like the wrath of khan and get pulled into this shit when the romulan ship reappears and so like then they become a crew or whatever and go to a planet and idk something kinda like errand of mercy in my head to have a discussion with some mysterious aliens who are under threat and are very peaceful but we dont know they are extremely powerful and mostly unafraid but then the romulan ship shows up again after u know time on this planet and the people wont help they wont fight back and its like interplay between pacifism and extreme loss and what are lines that must be crossed what is enough danger whats incalculable loss and idk they gotta create some complicated weapon to defeat the romulans with what they have and the aliens beg them not to do all this to protect them or something and idk we see what has changed spock and what hes willing to do so on this makes very little sense but i have ideas or something aldllad also i wish spock and uhura would like do science stuff together or play music and like do the vulcan hand kiss thing and work thru pain together perhaps give her a totally interesting new backstory fully reframe it for the main trio to be kirk spock and uhura have her backstory give her arc weight and meaning or something play into the not accepting no win scenarios theme or something idk

Since the kindergarten was in constant darkness, Amethyst has never seen anything so… bright before. The brightest shade of light she’s ever experienced other than the warppad was that one open area where the dark, gloomy clouds would be drifted away from that are. It was the only ray of sunshine she has ever experienced. She had touched the little, but weak sunray, and felt warmth all around her hand. It was so different than the usual cold air of the kindergarten, but in a good way. But now, she’s travelling in a warp pad with the beautiful giant lady beside her. The light of the warp pad may be as bright as the little ray of sunshine, but it didn’t give out the warmth she experienced. As for the travelling, she never though she would be leaving the place she called home, what’s worse, there was this small little cloud of regret hanging around her, telling her leaving was a very bad idea. But the pink lady looked so sure, so kind and confident of what she’s doing, taking this new gem away from her home? That’s not how she thinks, that’s honestly how amethyst felt, being taken away from her own home, and be willing to do so just because this lady said so! The pink lady announced to her one audience, “We’re almost there! Oh you’re gonna love it!” Amethyst involuntarily felt a surge of excitement, but she wasn’t actually excited, she should be more nervous than the feeling she’s having now… When they finally landed in the new location, it was apparently early morning as the sun was rising into the sky. They appeared to be in a cave, surrounded by water, brief stairs up and down, neatly placed tiles and a huge door behind her. Rose held out her hand to the new gem, “Come, let me show you around first.” And led Amethyst down the several stairs, slowly and carefully making their way out of the cave and into the white grains and sand. The texture felt weird to amethyst as she was used to the solid hard dirt and rocks scattered around. But here, there was not a lot of rocks, just a bunch of white, tiny looking pebbles and water splashing onto the shore. It was the first time Amethyst left the kindergarten, and she’s already feeling rather uneasy with all these… new experiences. The duo circled around the pre-beach city land, where dozens of flowers and plants bloomed in the midst. Rose ran ahead, beckoning the purple gem to come along. She twirled around within the beautiful flowers, throwing her arms all around, showing how much she loves the planet and its beauty. “These here are called Flowers, they are all their own individuals, but ultimately, it takes more than one flower to bloom into a huge patch like this!” Amethyst walked up to a flower and noticed how its…glowing with health? Her fascination on the unusually strong and glowing little plant life caught Rose’s attention. The big gem slyly admitted, “I may have…used some of my abilities to grow a few missing patches here and there-” she said as she turned in embarrassment, awkwardly stroking her tuffs of hair. “Plants like these may not live long, as from our observation, they only live at most for one season, but they are all so very much worth it!” When she turned back, she noticed Amethyst laying within the flowers, as if she found herself a flowerbed to lie down after all this time. She was moving her arms and legs as if shes making a snow angle from the flower patch- Rose found that to be a very fun idea indeed and joined the small gem as they basked in the giant flower patches, each making a “flower angle” to commemorate the first every joy they had together. SWISH SWISH SWISH HEHEHE The duo had their fun for a while, playing in the patches, showering each other with flower petals, and playing hide and seek. Tho, Rose was a lot easier to find with her big fluffy hair and figure, while amethyst was just the right size to become invisible and be one within the flower patches. After a few losses for Rose, she suggested they move on to something else. She gave out her hand to the little gem, who was covered in flower petals, and gently pulled her out of the patches.

“Come on, there’s something else I would like to show you.” She led Amethyst into a beautiful forest, dotted with freshly grown oaks and little saplings covered in dirt. Leaves were fluttering around the atmosphere while also gliding around the rays of sunlight that shone through the little gaps and fissures. The two gems stopped at a flowing river, where the fresh, clear water streamed Living creatures, mostly animals like butterflies, lions, but also the mentions of humans “They kinda look like us, except they don’t live longer than a century and theyre very, very fragile. Us gems are very different from humans, so if you ever meet one, you have to be extremely careful not to hurt them, even if you don’t mean to. Amethyst tried to get close, but Rose stopped her before she took another step closer. The small gem turned her head back to see Rose carrying a worried expression, “Maybe we should start with observing them before we interact with them, they’ve never seen you before, so maybe we should start slow, alright?” Before Amethyst could say anything, the human at the distance got up and disappeared into the forest. The small gem sighed; she was so excited to meet other new people! Rose reassured she’ll be able to meet them soon enough. “We’ll get to know them sometime in the future, come on, let’s head back to the temple and I’ll introduce you to the gems!! The two gems held hands and started strolling back to the temple. There’s no awkward chemistry between the two, as they projected a simple mother daughter relationship, or even a sibling relationship, where one of them energetically leaped around the larger figure, while the figure in the middle giggled at the little ball of energy circling her and constantly made her laugh with great joy and longed snickers! They reached the temple. Rose asked Amethyst to stay behind so she can surprise them. Just then, Garnet, Pearl and Coral warped back from their mission Pearl reporting what happened as Coral and Garnet added on their own little details “Oh Rose, you should’ve seen Garnet’s new gauntlet rockets and Coral’s amazing strike on that gem, with those two final blows, the gem monster was poofed in an instant! Coral chimed in, “Well, we would’ve been able to throw in the final blow without your brilliant, strategic idea! Your plan made all the difference!” Pearl blushed at the complement, “Why thank you Coral!” While the two pearls were getting along well, the fusion stood behind and gleamed at the stronger friendship between the two pearls, looking very proud of both of them. And judging from the grin, it was pretty clear to Rose that, the mission somehow got the three of them closer together. As Rose slowly shuffled around, being suspiciously quiet, the gems noticed a little figure hiding behind her white dress. Pearl was the first to spoke.

P: uh, Rose…what do you have there? The small gem hid behind Rose while a smoothy suddenly appeared on her hand. R: A smoothy

Coral, who kept her eyes on the new gem, asked, “What’s a smoothy?” Before Rose could answer the definition of the contraption in hand, Garnet interrupted by stating, “The smoothy is not something we should be concerned about right now…” while eyeing on the new, yet unexpected little gem. “Garnet’s right.” Pearl agreed, “Rose, please tell me you didn’t bought that…thing with you?” Amethyst decided to hide behind Rose completely after hearing that statement. Rose slowly turned and calmed her down before she said more. “Pearl, you should think before you say, otherwise someone might get their feelings hurt you know?” Rose suggested while holding on to the small, frightened gem. Pearl was a quick thinker, and it seemed that Rose took a liking to the little gem, which was rather typical of the leader. She’s a kind gem that wouldn’t take no for an answer after spending a certain amount of time with the object, Pearl of all gems should know better than to refuse whatever Rose brought in. Coral and Garnet turned to Pearl, who sighed in desperation, “Rose, may we know where and how did you find…her?” The big gem slowly, and abruptly responded, “I…uh, was taking a stroll in the kindergarten until I noticed her hiding in one of the holes! Yeap! That’s how it happened! Totally not moping around the places we hurt and trying to bring justice by destroying those that caused it! Haha…ha…” Rose, looking embarrassed, tried very hard not to do or say anything more. The three gems were trying their best to interpret her words as positive statements, but from their time together, they pretty much got the idea of how things went down exactly. Coral stood a step forward, “Rose, are you sure about this? She’s not like the other Amethyst gems we know. I mean, compared to the other quartz friends we had, she’s small, she can barely speak, and probably doesn’t know anything about being a gem!” Rose took that information and digested it for a short while before she came up with ideas to counter those issues. “She can learn! While I was talking to her, I noticed she repeat whatever I said, just in a different way to convey another message! As for not knowing what being a gem is about, that’s okay too! We can teach her without having her go through any of those Homeworld stuff, wouldn’t that be great!?” Rose was gleaming at the idea of a gem with no prior knowledge to how gems are “supposed” to be and allowing themselves to be whatever they want to be! Amethyst came out just a little bit from her hiding and repeated the last word she heard, “Great!” before scuttling back. Coral still doesn’t look convinced as she turned to the fusion, “Garnet, what do you think?” “Hmmmm…” Garnet made a look that could only mean one thing, she’s trying to see the little gem’s future. Future vision can be tricky, but it’s good to see what could potentially happen when we add in another factor into the equation. Her shades shone as the possibilities were carefully drafted and narrowed down to the most likely events. “In the futures where we accept her, I see her adapting to our lifestyle, but nothing much on how it’s going to end. There’s a possibility of her being a great asset to us, but there’s also the possibility of her being a greater liability than we could ever imagine.” “I like those odds!” Rose gleamed at the wide range of unpredictability. Coral didn’t want to rain on Rose’s parade or be a wet blanket seeing her being so happy. But she’s also not completely on board with this…new gem appearing out of nowhere. Pearl was the first to speak, “It’s always been just the four of us, I don’t know about having that unproperly developed gem into the team. It’s rather suspicious that she suddenly shows up at the kindergarten when that place has been shut down centuries ago! She might be a spy from homeworld for all we know! Or worse!” Coral gasped in horror and whispered, “Ohno…There’s something worse than spies!?” “Coral please,” Garnet reminded, “focus.” It was up to that point where Rose finally realized why the gems were not on board with the idea of adding a

new member. Homeworld was still a threat, they’re never safe if they keep including new people they don’t know. It’s only been some time since the blinding light turned all the gems on Earth into corrupted monsters. A lot of them were still out there, alone, confused, and most importantly, scared. Those gems were once powerful individuals that were indestructible, but now, they’re terrified gem monsters running around, fleeing from who knows what, not knowing what to do in their current state. But this Amethyst, the sweet, innocent, and lonely gem, won’t be facing that kind of terror any longer when she has us. Rose took one more look at Amethyst, who was trying her best to be unnoticed by the other gems, and was determined to take her in. “Now Crystal gems, don’t you see this is our only chance to have a gem untainted with the rules of Homeworld?” Rose started her topic with the recollection of the crystal gem origin. “Wasn’t that what we were fighting for? To be free of Homeworld’s rules and to live without a care? To preserve the life on Earth instead of taking it, and leaving nothing behind?” Rose continued, “The earth, the rebellion-” “Its more than just that! It’s also for love! The love for ourselves, and the love we have for each other! We never get to show our love anywhere except here! And right now, we have Amethyst who has been living in an abandoned kindergarten, and has probably never been loved through her entire existence! If we neglect her, we’re going against everything we’ve worked so hard for. Besides, she’s a newcomer who had never experienced the horrible tragedy of Homeworld. I mean, isn’t this a good thing we found her right before any homeworld gems did?” She didn’t wait for a response and proceeded, “We can teach her everything about the earth and the crystal gems. Coral! You can teach her what being a Crystal Gem is all about! Pearl! You could teach her about speech and physical formation! Garnet! You could teach her about our current missions or even gem fusion! I know she’s different from us, but she can handle this! With us keeping her safe, she won’t have to face any of those linear rules like staying within your duty, or being cast away as off colours when you don’t fit in with the others?” “She can be a free gem right from the start, without facing the trauma we had. What do you say?” Rose’s words were being very persuasive and all, but none of the gems seemed to budge towards the ideas from their dear leader. “Rose, please, still this is a risk to take. Risks that could potentially have an impact on our freedom and the earth!” Garnet spoke with a hint of fear, perhaps took a glance towards the possibilities of the future. Pearl and Coral, each holding an arm, both stayed silent, but ultimately agreed with the fusion. “Come on you guys, give her a chance, if you get to actually talk to her it might change your minds!” Rose turned around, but failed to see the small gem that was hiding behind her mere seconds ago. “Uh…Amethyst?” Rose called out, but heard no response, nor saw the small figure behind her anywhere. But all she saw were footprints leading back to the temple, and noticed the warp pad was just activated. Amethyst went back home.

(A/N: Heyyyy so this is the second part of the newest chapter. As you may have known, i was pretty busy with the end of the University studies and internship, so i kinda had my hands full to do anything like writing for fun!

Now, this is the end of part 2, where i tried to keep things a bit more interesting, but not too complicated that it would go on for more than 3 parts.

And again, sorry for the lack of visuals. Some of you might prefer reading with the images, and unfortunately, i currently do not have the motivation to be drawing, even if most of them would be tracing from screenshots of the show itself.

How you would meet the two of them;

You used to work with Eddie, filming his every action, every word and discovery’s. You admired him, both of you sharing deep yet rare conversations that never exactly lead anywhere

But for Eddie, it lead him to the depths of what he thinks is love.

After the situation with Venom went down Eddie became just a bit more bold

Tracking you down with venom questioning him the entire time, running up to you in public and making as much slow paced conversations as he possibly can with you

While a bit stuttery and awkward Eddie did his best to make you laugh, to make you smile or agree on his stance on things. Trying to talk while listening to Venom question him is harder than you think

While Eddie was intranced with you from the very beginning Venom took a little while

If it wasn’t for having to stick to Eddie, who usually stuck around you Venom would’ve never realized his fascination with you

Voices in Eddies head slowly agreeing with his thoughts, waking up in the morning to only ask when he’s going to see you again

Hearing every sickly in love idea Eddie might have, And Venom can’t disagree, they have the same want for you Eddie has

Venom starts to love everyway your body moves, every vibration of your pulse, your voice that speaks out your words and beautiful laughter, skin looks so soft Venom almost envies that Eddie gets to touch you and he can’t

Yandere traits;

Eddie is obsessive and clingy

He’s the type to adore you from afar, to enjoy every second he might get of you. Considers you the most beautiful person on the planet

Not the type to lock you away with him, Eddie respects you and is willing to give you space and time to warm up to him, as long as you end up with him.

Obsessive: you’ll never see a man stare at you so lovingly other than Eddie. Touching you gently even your rare hugs with him will be close and cuddly yet gentle,

Does research on every single thing about you, which his job experience helps with. Knows a little bit more about you than you would want him to know.

Will take any and every chance to get closer to you, and will go into a bit of a depressive phase if you show interest in someone else

Clingy: Eddie is everywhere you are, and from what you know he just happens to be there. Watching your every movement during his free time always a safe distance away, enough for it you were to spot him you wouldn’t think he’s following you.

Hug him please Eddie will never let you go, his arms lingering longer than they should. Any touch is lingering as well, from when he tucks a strand of your hair behind your ear to while your hands accidentally touch

Venom is obsessive and possessive

Venom will find any possible way to keep you with them, whether it’s by force, manipulation, or just by you falling in love with them

Obsessive: while venom hasn’t seen many humans or talked to many yet he finds you to be the best yet along with Eddie, so intriguing and beautiful

Best believe they’ll eat the head off of anyone who dares to upset you, and Eddie most likely wouldn’t stop him

Wants to feel the entirety of you, to wrap themselves around every inch of you including your insides, to be one with you and feel safe knowing your with them now

To hear your voice all day long would be amazing

Possesive: Venom wants you around them 24/7, every second in every night and day.

Would encourage Eddie to introduce his existence, wants to have a deep relationship with you, whether it’s with Eddie or not

Will keep you at eddies apartment for longer than needed, forcing any exit closed saying you should stay for just a little longer

Venom doesn’t believe you like other people other than Eddie and himself, won’t hesitate to scare off or attack those who gain your interest

How the relationship would be like;

The most sweet and cuddly thing you’ll ever witness in your life

Eddie will devote as much time as possible to you, sharing interest while showing Venom to all the things on earth along with concepts

The three of you goofing around on the Internet or with board games,

Venom can still play games like uno, making separate hands from Eddies body, but Venoms a champion at Monopoly and they still don’t know what they’re doing exactly

Venom switches from Eddie to you from time to time, mostly depends on the times. Once the sun comes up Venom will hang off of Eddie, preferring to stick with him until the sun starts setting or when he’s stuck at the computer typing away upon pages and pages

Clinging to you at night, watching whatever you are binging that night or trying to helping you cook food for Eddie when he’s overwhelmed with work

Sleepy time consists of you and Eddie cuddled within sheets with Venom either fitting around and inbetween the two of you, forming hands to entangle with both Eddie and your hands that aren’t already holding eachother.

Or latched onto one or the other, wrapped around their torso listening to every fading thought with their head snuggled into the persons neck

If someone hits on you, hurts you in any way you won’t be seeing Eddie or Venom that night, and when you ask where they’ve been Eddie will make a quick excuse of “it had something to do with my job,”

You’ll never see that person again

How they show their affection;

Venom and Eddie are usually connected, so they agree on cuddling you for the most part.

Eddie is better with words than physical expression, telling you how he feels about you and how much he loves you almost every day

You’ll wake up in the morning to hear mumbled praise in front of you with Eddies hands tracing over your form

Venom is the opposite, isn’t that talkative and the fact they just randomly developed the language doesn’t help, so they show their love by physical lengths

Wrapping around you and having you host them which is a true sign of trust. Forming a makeshift hand and entwining it with yours. Shapeshifting into a scarf around your neck on a cold day, or wrapping themselves around your hands

Venoms Incredibly comfortable compared to how they seem, you could drift off into the depth of sleep from just having Venom wrapped around you

The contrast on how they show their affections will prove useful when you have a breakdown, venom showing you love no other human could possibly manage while Eddie ensures that your loved with words, keeping you encouraged and determined.

How they show anger;

It really depends on what they’re angry about,

venom is most likely to be straight forward, but if it’s something that really gets to them they’ll start being passive aggressive. Silent and sticking away from either you or Eddie, whoever made them angry in the first place

Would confess to what made them mad within time but needs a bit of space. Example would be; if you called them Parasite, they would express their feelings towards it but if you don’t stop they’ll just get feed up, not wanting to hurt you in anyway Venom will just get increasingly quiet

Listen to Venom the first time, their anger will slowly spiral down into becoming just plain upset and will be down for the entire day

Eddie is stubborn, but doesn’t want to deal with more problems than he has to so he’ll try and make it up quick.

But once a problem hits a certain line he’ll actually get vocally angry, complaining with arguments, sometimes yelling but not much.

Never gets physical, loves you too much for that. Doesn’t matter what the problem is you’re more important he would never hurt you.

So basically any problem with these two could be easily solved by sitting down and talking with them. If theyre both mad at he same time for the same reason it won’t last long, things will be easily sorted out with you

Now if it’s at someone else, if someone harm you etc etc

They both have the same goal

Will take you away from them at first, if they still manage to find ways to harm you best believe they’re Venoms snack

also i talked about my scifi story for like half an hour (to myself, natch) and figured out that a good way to handle the AB thing is not to have A decide to ruin the plan out of nowhere by trying to get back to the army base, setting off the system and putting B at risk because Oh Shit. its to have A be arrested for like. hacking and shit, planetside. And, of course, they take ID in that arrest (which would place the criminal mark next to B, whose only crime has been impersonation with permission and some minor licensing shenanigans that come from that), but they also take dna/biometric data, because, yknow, Fake Ids, etc. and yknow, they get the data from A, and it shows up as them being A, and everyones like :T HMMM. A is adamant that they are B, but their colleagues who were arrested with them kinda fuck that by referring to them as A (yknow, Shenanigans).

meanwhile B is at space bace. tries to call A like they’ve been doing semi-regularly, fails. assumes theyre busy. next day, tries again, fails, decides to call their younger bro, who goes ‘yea they got arrested by the govt’ ‘they WHAT? Put mum on the line!’ and all that ensues. they don’t tell B what A did (mum says ‘i dont think im allowed to tell you’) but B is panicking. because Oh, Fuck. the best case scenario is that they assume A is B and B gets a criminal recod, but that fucks over B, who is currently pretending to be A, so like, what are they supposed to do? How long are they going to have to pretend to be A, and will they want to swap back at all if it means suddenly having a record for crimes they didn’t commit? the more likely outcome is that they figure out the switch, and oh GOD, OH NO.

Before the army base can be properly informed about the ongoing Situation (info was delayed because A demanded a lawyer, as you do) B gets sent on another mission with the squad, which helps put their actions into an emotional context. Explains why, when seeing D charge up a terrifying direct hit to a stationary C (whose ship had already been hit and was essentially ‘floating’ while she tried to manually fix one of the broken systems), B goes ‘fuck that’ and does a manual lightspeed jump to intercept the shot, which breaks through their shields and sends them fucking careening off into the void of space because getting hit at near light speed fucks you up real good. like, okay, fucking incredible maneouver, would have worked significantly better if the summonable shields for standard class weren’t Not Super Great, and also if D hadn’t fucking charged shot the bastard. fucking nyoom off into the void, 90% of the reason B fucking blacks out during that is that they got hit on an angle and fucking corkscrewed into the void like babe no amount of gravity stabilisers on the inside are gonna prevent you from wanting to vom, and thats assuming the gravity stabilisers weren’t fucked with IN THE HIT.

i guess the broad strokes is that A gets arrested, and before B can be like, questioned about it re:identity, they get fucked up real good on the last mission because part of them goes ‘if im gonna go to prison after this i might as well go to prison having saved my friends life’ and boom bitch, an unconscious pilot in a corkscrewing spaceship rocketing away from the encounter because theres noone at the wheel to hit the brakes. wild. theyre fine, as soon as L sees whats happened and processes what the FUCK just happened they basically immediately go ‘OH SHIT’ and completely disengage from the fight with D to chase after B’s runaway ship. shenanigans, etc etc, eventually everyones safe and back at base and B’s out fucking cold in the med bay and then like the resolution of that whole thing happens i guess? the fact A is not in orbit sorta messes with the original idea which is that both A and B would fly together, but A’s kinda under arrest for hacking like govt secrets of something trying to uncover the truth behind the DECAF ambush (i love that thats the acronym for the squad it kills me so bad) which means that if the story is entirely set in space, A never actually physically makes an appearance, which is hilarious. does complicate matters because its like, okay, so we’ve gotten a confession from B that they are, in fact, not A, and that they have committed that Worst of Crimes, impersonation with permission. at that point the folks have a few options. Jail B for ~crimes~, or let B continue to fly. Their squad would probably argue in their defence, with C’s testimony on the matter being particularly important from a procedural and emotional standpoint, since C has flown with both A and B. And that previously, C had something of a falling out with B where she almost accused them of being a different person. its more complex than that, but its like. yknow. turn around. willing to recognise the good in it, provided she eventually gets answers from the actual A, which B promises to set up once A isn’t, yknow, in lock up. And they’d be looking at B’s record, noting that they are a qualified pilot and attended flight school before transferring out to becoming a mechanic, that their criminal record is clean bar this shenanigannery and the confusion re: A’s hacking, and that their actual flight record during their time pretending to be A is. pretty fucking solid. Like. B has done nothing wrong aside from impersonate someone, and beyond that has just. done their job. they’ve followed orders, they’ve saved people, they’ve taken down enemy combatants, etc etc. and they go ‘you know what? we dont have the luxury of time to slot a new person into that squad to replace you, and so on, so forth, do fuck it! you can stay! but the moment things ebb, you will be on the first ship back to the planet to be dealt with’ and B’s like That’s Honestly Better than I thought that would go, so that works.

the only bit about all this thats iffy is trying to make sure A is still... relevant? that their presence, their actual presence, it felt somehow, so that all the shenanigans don’t come from nowhere. and also to have the information A obtained from The Hackening be useful somehow. like, its about the DECAF thing, and proves something about the incident, like that the space fleet knew D’s ship was active the entire time and did nothing about it, or some shit. thats the issue, cause i feel like being able to know anything about that incident requires explaining what D’s motives are, since its presumably tied into The Truth, and i dont knooow

oof i respect ma zhe saying that he doesnt want to win bc he recognizes other kids like FRUIT PLANET KIDS, zy and xiao zhi, are so skilled. he knows winning is just a numbers game and would not serve as proof of his skill. thats a tough place to be in, and it isnt uncommon but i think i rarely hear a contestant say it like that. “i dont want to win bc im not worthy” “i dont want to win bc i know im not as talented” 

wow i was a little confused as to why they were doing these solo spotlights but actually this is really nice! its nice to see them really going hard at their strengths and really pouring their all in to show off a bit. it can be hard to do so in a group setting all the time, and really it reminds you that there a lot of really talented musicians among these kids. i think itll also be good to remind the kids who are picking later what the other kids’ skills are and what they’re capable of. 

oh whoa i thought about there only being 2 bassists, i didnt realize there are only 2 pianists too

hm maybe im just biased but i thought xiao li’s playing was a litttleee bit cleaner than szb’s heheh but i respect that they attempted to even play a duet from across the room, thats a challenge

Traveling While Vegan & Staying Sane

Bring snacks This is absolutely essential. Before you leave town, stock up on easy-to-carry healthy(ish) emergency snacks. Energy bars, dried fruit, trail mix, nuts. (If there’s a Trader Joe’s near you, you’ve hit the motherload.) On short trips (10 days or less), get one snack for each day you’ll be traveling. Get a variety of flavors.

Don’t listen to yourself in the store when you say, “Blech, energy bars. Those things are so dry!” These puppies will save your life on the road. Even if you don’t end up eating them all, you can give them away to someone in need and you’ll be their best friend for the day.

Get access to a kitchen Given a choice between accommodation options, choose one where you get the use of a kitchen. A stove with pots and pans and random spices makes life so much easier. Even if you don’t feel like cooking, you can rinse off that fruit that you bought at the farmer’s market, or cut up veggies to eat as fresh snacks during the day.

If you have to stay in a hotel, try to at least to choose one with a little fridge. That way you can bring leftovers home and eat those for breakfast while everyone else is chewing on cow legs or whatever.

Relentlessly pursue new foods I don’t have to say this, right? This planet offers such a wide variety of plants for us to choose from. Now that you’re traveling you can get your hands on even more! Woot!

Clean your produce properly In some countries (I’m looking at you, Mexico), you can get the serious runs (and worse) if you eat produce without washing it properly. Cleaning it with tap water that’s not drinkable does nothing to improve the situation, and using bottled water to clean produce is not sustainable.

So in the market, buy yourself a tiny bottle of produce wash (look for Microdyn or Bacdyn in Mexico, Take you zinc lozenges supplements when you can too since theyre a good alternative) designed to get rid of unhealthy stuff (fertilizer, contact with contaminated water and people’s hands) on the outside of produce. Read the instructions for specific measurements and time, but the process goes like: Put a few drops into a container of tap water. Soak your produce in it for the designated number of minutes, et voila! Remember to air dry or pat dry; don’t jank it up again by rinsing it with plain tap water.

In places where the tap water is potable, you can rinse your produce with a vinegar solution. NY Times says 1 part vinegar to 9 parts tap water, then rinse with plain tap water for at least 30 seconds.

People might tell you that washing your produce is silly and unnecessary. But when plants are all you eat, your chances are of eating bird poop, cow manure or hand sweat along with your meal are greater than someone who only eats plants as a side dish. Think about it. Then go wash your hands.

Research your options in advance Being vegan has become less and less of a big deal. How much effort it takes to stay happily fed will depend on where you are, how open you are to trying new foods, and how well you prepare.

Portland vs. Dallas can make a difference. Mexico City vs. Huatulco can make a difference. So before you get there (or before you get hungry) map out some places that will definitely (or most likely) have food that’ll make your tummy happy. Find out when and where the farmers markets are.

Get on Yelp and create a collection of restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries that excite you. Put out a bat signal to your favorite traveling vegans and ask for recommendations. What’s in season and are some local foods that you really want to try?

Get creative If you’re in a place that’s less than veg-centric, you’re going to have to get creative. This doesn’t mean you need to be a pain in the ass. You know the person who orders a salad with “extra, extra cheese. Extra, extra dressing on the side. Light lettuce.” Don’t be that person.

But do tell the waiter that you don’t eat meat or dairy (probably best to spell it out clearly rather than use the word vegan, which could be interpreted in many ways) and that you’re open to their suggestions. If you’re in a group, let the idea percolate while everyone else orders.

Often, you can pull together a great meal by ordering just side dishes. Can you have breakfast for dinner? If you see someone at the next table eating something that floats your boat, politely ask them or the waiter what it is and what’s in it. Can you get that without the fried egg on top? If all else fails, throw yourself at the mercy of the chef. Ask them to create a vegan plate for you with what they have in the kitchen.

Whatever the waiter ends up setting down in front of you, be gracious and enjoy the present company.

Think ahead Nothing at the breakfast bar but rooster feet and fish heads? Yeah, that sucks so bad. Remember to at least grab a banana for later. And at some point while you’re out, remember to pick up something for the next day’s breakfast. Be on the lookout for farmers markets, street vendors and stores with prepared dishes. If you happen to find a vegan store in a meat-centric place, rejoice and replenish — and ask the staff for recommendations.

No need to turn your journey into a foraging expedition (unless you like those). Just be ready to pounce on opportunity when you stumble upon it. And ask anyone you’re traveling with to tell you if they see any particularly delicious looking produce.

I have an unfortunate flaw: The hungrier I get, the pickier I get. So the longer I wait, the less likely I am to find something that I’m willing to eat. I traveled to Puerto Rico with a friend (then boyfriend) who learned to recognize my signs of hunger. With a slight look of panic on his face, he would quickly steer us towards a fruit stand or a cafe before I could get too grouchy and lose my sense of humor/direction.

Don’t be that girlfriend.

Flex if you have to This is a tough one. I remember finding out that the bread in the supposedly vegan sandwich I’d eaten a week before had egg in it. I felt sad and a little sick inside.

There are situations where you have to choose the lesser of two evils. One day it will come down to choosing between a pounding hunger headache or eating a little fish sauce in your veggie pad thai. Or your host will spent an entire day cooking a special welcome meal for you that happens to have a little butter in it (“You don’t eat butter either?”).

The reasons people have for being vegan run deep. Some are vegan for health reasons, but for many it’s about valuing all life. So there’s that. And then there is the value of appreciating the hospitality and kindness of other humans. It’s a tough call; only you can decide what’s right for you in these situations. But sometimes, you have to flex in order to: 1. Get the hell off the hangry train, or 2. not be an asshole to another person who’s sincerely trying their best to accommodate you.

If you end up needing to flex on one meal, don’t kill yourself over it. And don’t get on everyone’s last nerve by talking about it for hours. Just do your best to live by your values, and if you stumble, redemption is only as far as your next meal.

The future of Snapchat Discover looks a lot like TV

Three years ago, Nick Bell and a few colleagues at Snapchat stared at a wall of post-it notes. On them were the names of dozens of media outlets like People, Daily Mail, Billboard and The New York Times.

Snapchat wanted brands with strong voices that could connect with a 14 year old. It was up to Bell, formerly senior VP at News Corp., to convince publishers to see the light.

That was the beginning of Discover, a network of media outlets that elevated Snapchat’s credibility as a company (from a sexting app to a lifestyle brand) in exchange for a new source of revenue for publishers desperate for eyeballs.

It’s been two years since the platform went live on the app, and dozens of publishers told Mashable they want to build more. Viewership is up, from the hundreds of thousands to the millions per day with completion rates, for some, above 50 percent. Revenue is up, into the tens of millions for some. Channels are profitable. “It started out as an experiment, but its become really, really real,” said Raj Mody, vice president of social media at National Geographic, one of Discover’s launch partners. “When you look at our brand were a leader in social media and in visual storytelling. The fact that theyre evolving the platform, that’s something that has been enormously helpful.”

For Snap, Discover has grown from 12 partners to more than 40. The name no longer applies to just magazine-like feeds. Now, there are Editions, Our Stories (formerly Live Stories) and Shows, an effort to lure TV production studios to make original series for the app. Snapchat itself has invested in a political show called Good Luck America, which returns for a second season next month.

Each of these serve Snap’s audience and, Snap says, attracts ad dollars, like the $70 billion locked into television annually. Snap boldly compares itself with TV during strategic conversations with investors and ad agencies as it preps for an initial public offering.

All the while, competitors older and wealthier are after the same thing.

“Right now, Facebook, Amazon, even Apple are willing to write massive checks, tens of millions, hundreds of millions, to build specific content for that platform,” said one media executive who has spoken with each of them and is not currently a Discover partner. “If producing a Snapchat show returns more than its cost, and you reach global millennials than it could make some sense, but it’s not easy.”

Few on the street recognized Peter Hamby, Snap’s head of news and host of Good Luck America, when he was a political reporter at CNN. Now, he’s the “Snapchat guy.” Exclusivity, Snapchat says, means quality.

Discovering Discover

Snapchat looked at how media used other social platforms and decided to do something different. On Facebook, publishers try to ride the site’s ever-changing and ambiguous algorithm. On Twitter, 140-characters of clickbait flies around. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and Bell, whom he hired in April 2014, were inspired by old-school newspaper and magazine stands with a mobile twist.

When Snapchat walked into the doors of publishers, some turned them away. Others said it wasn’t the right time, and some, Snapchat says, just didn’t fit the brand: young and fun.

National Geographic committed to a contract almost immediately. “Were willing to reach people where theyre at. We see all these experiences being additive,” Mody said.

“When you look across the major platforms, you definitely see a younger audience.”

Magazine giant Hearst offered up Cosmopolitan and saw so much immediate success (in viewership and revenue) they began to think about a new brand. A year into Discover, they launched Sweet, which now receives about 16 million unique viewers per month on the platform out of Snap’s daily audience of 150 million. That’s low on the daily average. For Sweet, that’s just fine.

“There hasnt been anything thats been negative,” said Ross Clark, vice president and general manager of Sweet. But he, the overseer of a Snapchat-exclusive outlet, does expect more. “What I would love to see, more interactive elements, quizzes, polls, ways to engage more deeply.”

One concern that frustrated several publishers was moving Discover content below friends’ stories. It did cause a drop in viewership, but the dip has since reversed.

Snap has not released updated metrics since mid-last year. In May 2016, Snapchat had 150 million daily active users and publishers have indeed seen an increase in audience size. Sweet, for example, is at 16 million monthly views, up from 15 million in September 2016.

Playing along

After Bell’s initial pitches and Snapchat’s grand reveal on Jan. 27, 2015, publishers became hungry to be on Discover. Even when Snapchat would say no or at least not yet some created mock-ups anyhow, desperate for meetings.

Snapchat has since opened the platform to more publishers to get a new, wide swath of users. Discover skewed young, so in came The Wall Street Journal. Not enough male viewers, so Bleacher Report moved from the international edition to global.

Not all of these companies are seeing significant profit margins, but that isn’t what matters at the moment to everyone.

“For us right now the engagement and the ability to reach this young demographic that is what is incredible,” said Melissa Rosenthal Brenner, SVP of digital media at the NBA. “A high concentration of our fans are in the age of 14 to 24 on Snapchat.”

Both Snapchat and brands are still experimenting. Forbes offered up an exclusive of its 30 Under 30 List this year and Forbes said that it was “happy” with its performance above Discover’s average for completion but it isn’t planning to build monthly, yet.

Meanwhile, The Washington Post, known for its commitment to digital, hasn’t jumped on Editions. It is a test partner for Facebook’s Snapchat Discover clone. The Post does have a Snapchat account and contributes to Stories.

“We rely on a few personalities that appear regularly on our Snap stories. Followers see familiar faces that way, which is a much closer experience to seeing their friends stories. These personalities can also act as hosts that then can introduce other reporters and editors,” Washington Post audience and engagement editor Ryan Kellett wrote in an email.

The same goes for NBC News, with reporters featured in Stories on Mosul and other news events. The Atlantic‘s Quartz take viewers behind the scenes of events all over the world. Both publishers have been in discussions about more formal, revenue-driven roles on Discover.

But not everyone is playing along. Mic, the self-branded millennial news site, no longer produces content for Snapchat.

In development, in the studio

Next up for Snap: Shows, a form of mobile television.

Snap, in part, convinced studios to join its push by building its own series. More than 22 million viewers watchedthe first season of Good Luck America, which featured interviews with Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Paul Ryan and Chris Christie.

Just like how Bell served as a bridge between publishers and Snapchat, the company has been recruiting more TV-experienced executives. Michael Lynton, chief executive of Sonys entertainment division, announced earlier this month he was stepping down from Sony to go all in to Snap.

Snap is also hiring for a shows partnership lead, someone who will “drive the expansion of Snapchats Discover platform through partnerships with studios, networks, and production companies,” according a recent job posting.

Facebook, with CollegeHumor co-founder Ricky Van Veen and TV news vet Campbell Brown, presents competition. The company has a Discover clone with 10 partners and is simultaneously in conversations for series with studios. Publishers, though, still see them differently.

“Facebook is good, engaging written content. Snapchat for whoever is hosting, we say, ‘Go crazy, have fun.’ Its about bringing out that personality,” said Maria McKenzie, social communications manager of travel guide company Lonely Planet, which has worked with Snapchat on Stories.

“I hope that it keeps growing strong. I hope people keep engaging and just have fun it,” she continued.

A sports publisher noted Snap often says “you watch the game on television, but youexperience it on Snapchat.”

A flood of Shows isn’t expected. Just like Editions, only select partners are being brought on. NBCUniversalalready has introduced The Voice and E: The Rundown. ABC/Disney is in with The Bachelor. Turner Broadcasting is expected to introduce shows from TBS, Adult Swim and truTV.

While these new experiences make the mobile screen more crowded, traditional publishers were positive about the addition. “Being early in the game has definitely been a benefit,” Mody of National Geographic said. “You develop a great bond and relationship with the team over at Snapchat.”

Shows “benefit everyone by creating more of a reason to come back every day,” Clark of Sweet said.
