Ok I've been getting a lot more Taco II discourse on my timeline recently. NOW I see what you all mean.... I gotta be honest, a lot of the posts to me still read as fans making up things to be mad about fhdjf what do you MEAN "Taco is irredeemable and doesn't Want to be redeemed and forcing her down a traditional redemption arc is Impossible AND you're a misogynist for misinterpreting her character" OKAYYY. Sit down buddy, Cool IT. What in the WORLD are you talking about. Did you miss the last minute of the episode where she says "no more running" and decides to face her fears head on, with the support of MePad. Did you miss all those letters she sent to Pickle, or her reaching for the portal for "another chance" at season 1, so she could fix her mistakes and wouldn't have hurt her friend? "But she wanted to kill Balloon that one time!" ONE she wanted to taze him, relax. I mean like if he pops he pops, but that's pretty Par For The Course for an object show, ESPECIALLY when II2 was still developing its more serious, less hyper-violent slapstick tone. TWO part of her problem is that she doesn't change w the game, she's still running (at least partially) on season 1 rules and in season 1 killing people was pretty normal, sorryy. Like a HUUUUGE point of her narrative arc is how she's still making a lot of the same mistakes she made with Pickle, but she doesn't realize until it's too late bcuz she's still too focused on the game (until it all comes crashing down a second time and she hates herself about it, and tries to End The Whole Show (THROUGH NONVIOLENCE MIGHT I ADD)). The whole show, she's wanted nothing more than to be redeemed and to undo her mistakes becuz she REGRETS HURTING PEOPLE AND she doesn't fully believe she can or that she deserves to, until MePad begins to help her out. These two things can both be true!!

Also, come On man. Sooooo many characters in this show are "bad people" or can be mean or hurtful. (Honestly, Id argue that a huge theme of the show is realizing people are multi-faceted and that people aren't only their worst traits, or their stereotype personalities but are in fact just as complex and personable as anyone else. That the show and the game and the challenge bring out the worst in people for Drama or Views or Money, but that doesn't mean that's all there IS to the competitors, and even the hosts, and you can't judge them based solely on their worst traits, which are getting exacerbated and unnaturally worsened due to the harmful exploitative nature of reality TV). That doesn't make ANY of them "irredeemable". Taco can have a redemption arc just as much as MePhone or Knife or Nickel can, who IN MY OPINION have done similar, and also Way Worse Things than she did, that no one ever brings up in these conversations. And NO that doesn't make you a misogynist for misinterpreting Taco or for thinking Knife is fine and she isn't, it just makes you have poor plot comprehension skills and you're predisposed to hold bias against the antagonist character becuz she's the antagonist. It's Whatever.

Adding to the episodes of bad Mako social media takes, here one from the "offical" youtube channel. They did a 'who's on the naughty list' poll and the choices were Zaheer, The Earth Queen, and of frickin course Mako (and Tahno for some reason).

That actually made me a little angry. I really hate how their channels go to appeals to the worst parts of the fandom.

the fandom's hatred towards mako has always been objectively odd to me.

like there isn't anything wrong with disliking a character and i know a lot of people find mako boring.

couldn't be me but whatever.

what bothers me is that the purposeful, willful misunderstanding of a character where it's twisted to justify character bashing. it often comes across as "hey this character isn't expressing their trauma the way i want them to so they suck."

mako is repressed.

part of the love triangle problem is that mako doesn't know what he wants. mako's emotional needs became superfluous when his parents died. they no longer mattered in the face of survival for himself and bolin. when confronted with something outside of this he completely flounders because he's not only never examined what his wants even are and has disregarded them so much he has no idea that obtaining something he wants for himself is like, you know, allowed. also, tu clocked his ass by saying that him wanting to people please ended up pleasing no one including him.

is mako the mom from reba mcentire's is there life out there? yes. yes he is.

i have seen sooooo many bad takes on legend of korra characters. from korra herself to a child character like meelo. mako is not the only victim but he is the most visable i think outside of korra.

i've also expressed sooooo many times that i loathe what i consider a bad stale joke that is frequently regurgitated that mako somehow "turned" asami and korra gay makes me want to brain myself. i expect that shit from reddit and youtube but when i see it on tumblr it's disappointing because it's usually people who claim to want representation yet they disregard korra and asmai's bisexuality to make mako the butt of a shitty joke.

also asami and korra didn't get together until three full ass years after either of them were involved with mako.

all three of them get over their cringe love triangle too and become even better friends by the end. none of them hold onto any resentment. mere weeks after korra and mako's break up korra and asami are laughing about their mistakes and korra wants mako to come with her to find airbenders. there weren't any hard feelings.

people will bend over backwards to justify kuvira and rationalize amon or defend zaheer when mako's worse crime is being a dumbass teenager who made mistakes but more than apologized and made up for them.

the handmaid’s tale s2ep8 thoughts

- it’s obvious the writers have been wanting to do this episode for awhile. Anytime the de-aging of serena from the books is brought up they point to how that changes her relationship with june and creates the idea they could have been friends. And that friendship is teased sooooo many times this episode

- it’s funny (though not funny) that while june is constantly oppressed and a slave, she has a support system in gilead. She has nick, rita, emily, janine, and alma. Serena has her fake friendship with naomi and knitting. I would argue that while serena’s life is better, her life is also lonelier. Which is her own damn fault

- but you can tell that while june enjoys their interactions, serena clings to them

- and neither of them was happy fred is coming back. 

- I don’t think anyone in this show has ever said “praised be” sincerely

- Is is just me or does fred look 1000% times creepier

- okay nobody in this house is happy fred is back. Except eden but even then that could be argued that she is a kid who is trying her best to fit in so deep down she might not even be happy

- “may the force be with you” I love you janine

- is there anything more pure than janine’s smile???

- I hate seeing Emily angry but I’m also like GIRL WHAT YOU GONNA DO because I will get my popcorn and watch emily take down gilead all day

- june has obviously let her editing sessions give her more confidence/power. She pushed those guardians away like she was in charge and I was impressed. But also confused at why the guardians let her get away with it? Unless they were impressed as well

- Serena coming to june to get an opinion... this is what draws up so much complexity. While june enjoys serena’s company due to not feeling oppressed, I think serena is a step ahead and feels an admiration for june and a need to connect with her. 

- fred is such a prick. And june and serena sitting on that bench in the kitchen made me think “men. what are you gonna do?” and then serena’s face is like “aight fuck it janine can see the baby”

- forever confused by warren and naomi’s relationship

- aunt lydia is a lot less threatening when she is just as concerned as june. And I also wonder why she feels such a strong attachment to janine. In the same way pryce was a father-like figure to nick, I think aunt lydia feels strong maternal instincts to janine. more so than any other handmaid at least

- also why does everyone call janine “janine”? even aunt lydia doesn’t give a fuck about her given name anymore

- that poor martha was so scared at first and then SHE MADE ME SO EMOTIONAL. that actress did such a good job conveying so much emotion in 3 seconds

- also that doctor just talking her up about how great it was to see her again. Part of me thought it was cute and part of me wanted him to just shut the fuck up because where was he objecting to her being made a martha instead of being kept as a doctor? hmmm? HMM?

- Naomi getting mad about angela dying? Naomi cares about angela? what?

- serena goes and rages on the martha/doctor... of course. She has such a short fuse she has to take her anger out somewhere and it’s always misplaced. 

- fred going up to rape june... ughfdkghdksfj he’s the worst and so much creepier now

- and then he saw the rose and realized serena and june are cool with each other and he realized that he didn’t have control over either of them

- naomi handing charlotte over to janine... thank god she was civil about it

- okay lots of thoughts on this scene...

cinematography was A+++ at first fred seems really feeble behind his desk and then when he rises up the lighting made him look like this terrifying monster

watching the whipping was harder than I thought it would be it was so much more violent

also fred is the worst and he did this because he’s weak and needed to exert his “power” and drive these two women against each other

all three of them acted that so well. Fred was a creepy monster, yvonne was pitiful, and elizabeth acted her face of as per usual

- eden finding the letters. knew it was coming. But as nick got mad... did anyone else get the feeling she was expecting to be hit? As in she’s been hit before and that’s what she expects when a man raises his voice?

- I feel bad saying poor serena because she’s a villain and I know what happens in the next two episodes but POOR SERENA. Yvonne acted the undressing scene so perfectly and I flipped back and forth between being in awe of her beauty and talent and feeling bad for her character

- june comes upstairs to try and keep the friendship going, serena is tempted, and then pushes those feelings down and lets her anger walls back up. and then goes back to crying. YVONNE DESERVES AN EMMY I SAID WHAT I SAID DONT @ ME

 - june gives up, knowing their alliance is over and goes back to fred. Shout out to the use of margaret atwood’s quote

 Again A+++ camera work making fred seem like a monster hidden behind a door and then of june on the floor

- I don’t really know how to interpret june’s breakdown? Is she upset about serena? about angela? both? is it just a typical day in gilead? idk

- JANINE AND CHARLOTTE <333 (it’s hard flipping back and forth between angela and charlotte but I always try to use charlotte whenever she is referenced with janine)

- That scene was so beautiful and janine is a glowing mother, charlotte is her happy daughter who looks just like her and that was the best shot to end on

Next episode:

- I’m not going to speculate for it because I know exactly what happens in episodes 9 and 10 and so it wouldn’t be speculating and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who doesn’t want to be spoiled

Chicago Med On Shaky Ground Review

I’m going to be honest…I was not crazy about this episode. First, where did Natalie and Will learn to break heart-crushing bad news from? Dr. Lee? The empathy was not there for that poor couple from the beginning and isn’t exactly how hospitals handle this kind of sensitive case. I know why they did it this way but it was lazy and lacked humanity. The way the couple gave Natalie that pep-talk speech (because she has NEVER not been consoled when she’s upset) was not real to the way that kind of heartbreak and trauma happen to people.  This story is connected to a larger problem with Med.

I could’ve sworn that the patient April and Ethan treated had some sort of abdominal issue but then it became about her head and of course her home. This story was yet another problem connected to the larger problem with Med’s storytelling.

What am I bitching about you didn’t ask? Before you didn’t ask why I even watch this show?

It’s this;

The problem overall with Med is that each case we see these GROWN UPS act as though they have no life experience or knowledge. Because we don’t get enough background or development for the cases we are left  with ADULTS asking stupid questions about shit we all either learned or know about through lived experiences or have read enough non-fiction or fiction to think about.

Let’s take Natalie:

Why did Natalie have an issue with this case? Does anyone remember the parents of the girl who had cancer that Natalie gave false hope to? She knew there was a thin margin for survival and she gave them that hope and their daughter died. Why did Will even need to ask her “What about the second time this happens?” because this was the SECOND time this had happened. He reminded her what she would have said to him (Remember Jennifer Baker) so why the regression for Natalie (to be honest this whole season)? 

We don’t get an answer because this is the lazy way the writers have decided to set up the clash between Will and Natalie instead of allowing growth and complexities. We never see why or how Will has changed to respect Natalie’s opinion aside from him liking her. They never address  the sexist tone he takes with her when he wants to get his way. He apologizes and claims it’s because he likes her (yikes) but more than anything they won’t explore it. 

They won’t explore or even have Natalie admit that letting go has been a struggle with her from season one! Losing hope has been hard for an ex- rangers’ wife. And this is because we haven’t really seen them delve into Natalie’s’ ordeal as widow and all that comes with it in a thoughtful way. We had many episodes with her crying and missing him sooooo much and having everyone basically tell her to get over it for their own selfish gain or do a “there, there” style pat to the arm.

They showed Natalie as the object of another characters' attraction and steered us viewers into questioning “when she would be ready to date?” as if the all healing penis of Halstead was what she needed. It’s this same buffoonery and lack of depth that made Will kiss her and then say he couldn’t and wouldn’t wait for her. The “special” way they talk, connect, and hang out is never shown because Natalie would’ve divulged that pain to her best friend (see Alex Karev and Meredith Grey for examples) and he would’ve understood her. Manstead would have this beautiful foundation of friendship we are told they have but never really see. So Will could’ve engaged her in this case as friend, then as a boyfriend, and finally a superior if he felt she was falling back into bad habits but nope.

Ethan is another case of nonsense. Did April really have to be the one to remind him about Emily and where his sister came from? How in the world would a huge arc like that shape Ethan but also go completely over his head when it came to this case? You would think given his understanding of Emily’s family situation before the Choi’s adopted her he would know that CPS is an underfunded and deeply flawed system that children die or are abused in constantly. This narrative once again divorces lived experiences from our characters. Not to mention do you remember the teenage girl who stuffed her baby in her back pack after giving birth? The anorexic from the last episode he lost? All of these lessons should have showed Choi that there are lot of people you can’t save with this black and white thinking. Once again no growth; no development, no consistency.

Sarah’s story….dear god why. This story is so ridiculous. So I was glad they explained the prison visit was Sarah’s idea and it was done from a place of attempting Exposure Therapy.

 Exposure Therapy is done by putting a person who suffers from anxiety in their fear so they can face it and hopefully retrain the brain into relieving the stress around whatever activity, event, or thing triggers the person’s anxiety. 

Okay….why in the world couldn’t we have had therapy sessions where Sarah worked her way up to it and viewed a scene where Sarah and her therapist discussed the pros  and cons of visiting a PRISON as way for her to exercise this form of therapy? Training your brain to believe that orange-jump suit wearing violent prisoners are not a danger to you is ridiculous. Sarah should have stuck with the last doctor she was assigned with because she would’’ve been an observer first and then she would have had to read about patients and then construct a plan BEFORE seeing them. Then doctor Charles could have her observe IN the room with a potentially violent or agitated patient for a few weeks until she wasn’t afraid, then finally with her alone, and then treating the patient. Do you see all these steps? This all could have been done throughout the last few episodes instead of the same jump scare they have been giving Sarah. I could go on and on about how I would’ve wrote that story while revealing background on Sarah, deepening the relationship with Dr. Charles and watching her grow as a psychiatrist, take charge of her mental health, and most importantly handle this story that she shouldn’t have had in the first place the respect it deserved but nope. Another rush job that is actually kind of disrespectful to people suffering from anxiety and PTSD.

And THE WORST!

The story that made steam blow from my ears was Ava’s. This show does not know how to let women be successful without taking them down a few pegs. It’s obvious that she is in awe of her mentor and his approval means a great deal to her; but goddamn people. They put the well-knowledge assertive surgeon on the back-burner so we could see that Ava doesn’t really have confidence; it’s all an act. She desperately needs approval, just like Connor, (yay something they can bond over right?). My eyes rolled practically into next Tuesdays’ episode. No one on this show is allowed to have confidence except Connor. Latham’s was blamed on autism and now we are basically to believe that Ava’s, comes from her mentor, and can be easily snatched. The Ava we were introduced to would NEVER let Connor see her cry and she definitely would challenge her mentor; this is what made her his star pupil; because she rebelled and was successful and fearless. That’s what I thought it would be. Instead we got Med’s sexist thinly veiled daddy-issues that plague the One Chicago world of writing.

Maggie is another example of not giving too goddamn shits about past experiences. We know Maggie and Barry are going to date because what would the point of bringing him on be? I’m not into this story either. It makes her appear wishy washy; which to be fair this is what they do to ALL the characters. Some quick after-school-style special gesture or lesson is learned or seen and our characters start seeing the world in a new light because screw critical thought or higher order thinking. (You know what you’d find among doctorates). In this case we are shown the gesture of Barry getting a jacket for April and Ethan’s patient. If they are going to go down this route then why not have her agree to dinner as friends. After all if Barry wants to get back into her good graces he’ll take any chance to be part of her life; because that’s what you do when you are trying to repair trust from an infidelity. Maggie can see the ways he’s changed and even more importantly he can see the changes in Maggie after however many years have passed since they dated. Unless we are to believe having your heart ripped out doesn’t change a person or she has had no growth over the past however many years.

I like that Sharon sided with April and gave a reason why she did, but have we ever seen this extra layer or depth of reason when child services are called? It was like Med was saving this obvious explanation for this particular situation. *eye roll*

I continue to love Abrams but was a little put off by the fact that Ethan had to show a NEUROSURGEON where a problem was in her scan.

We are back to Med nonsense guys. The momentum of the first six episodes is squandered and this is what we are left with. I just hope that it doesn’t last much longer and we get a more solid foundation to stand on because my attention and patience is on shaky ground.

1. Welp, been away from Riverdale for awhile -- at first I thought I was just avoiding it, but then it turns out that my avoidance lined up with their planned hiatus. I'm a bit behind on this episode though, so let's get things rolling.

2. So apparently Alice Cooper is planning a baby shower for Polly? I feel like that's going to end badly.

3. Oh right, I just about forgot that Jughead's dad had Jason's coat.
