I notice how (most of) the fandom likes to pin Mirabel as motherly but...Camilo's right there. I can see him getting strict when he needs to be or blurts out the right advice at the right time...which literally shocks everyone when he does but still. In other words, he's the "mom/dad" friend that everybody needs at the right time.
He takes care of kids all day + Is a natural caretaker like Julieta is. We don't know much of his personality other than "mischievous" but taking care of kids from an early age can surely make someone responsible and mature overtime.
Mirabel isn't the town babysitter; she has her own things going on. And I know she loves kids and all, but she strikes more as an older sister/ "aunt who gives you the candy you aren't supposed to have" kind of gal than a motherly type. Don't get me wrong, I honestly think she's good with advice too, but Camilo comes in a close second.
Yet, there's literally a tag on ao3 that's "Mirabel Madrigal acting as Antonio Madrigal's parental figure" that belongs to 94 fics. It's not a lot but still.
I'm okay with it being an au and all, have your fun, but Camilo takes care of kids on a regular basis. Shouldn't he be the one that's seen as parental?
It would be funny to see the slacker get fed up with someone's antics and start scolding like a parent would. I'm sure when it happens it makes the person do a double take because it's not something he does often. Rarely even.
So, when it does happen, it's shocking.
It would be nice to have Camilo be painted as someone who is emotionally mature. Maybe not to the extent of Mirabel, but like I said, he takes care of children. That has to make someone emotionally mature to some extent.
It would be nice to see Camilo not painted as a jerk for once. Sure, he's incredibly blunt but not a jerk! And yes, he's a teen boy, he's going to feel emotions like one, but we SAW him giving tea to his mom when she was freaking out.
Not jerk teenager would do that unless they were forced too. Camilo isn't forced, he wants his mama to be calm so SHE can feel a little better. We can see that by the way he's talking to her.
It would be hilarious to see Camilo using a chancla on someone (maybe a bully who's harassing Mirabel) and ending it with-
"AND DON'T THINK YOUR PARENTS WON'T HEAR ABOUT THIS!"
Sorry for the rant, I didn't intend for it to get that long.
anon you are speaking my language!! I’ve talked about my dislike for parentified mirabel before so it’s nice to see I’m not alone on that!
camilo definitely has a more nurturing side and we see it as early as the opening song! Whilst I wouldn’t go as far to say he acts like a parent he definitely knows how to discipline children and is just naturally good at dealing with them! I would love to see more content that talks about how caring camilo is (I am sick of the jerk camilo thing he’s not heartless guys!) I can definitely see him as more experienced with kids than mirabel as he’s the babysitter she’s more just the fun one who hangs around with them! it’s a very different dynamic as we don’t really see mirabel necessarily looking after kids only entertaining them! As for your point on camilo being emotionally mature I would have to agree! the mothers wouldn’t trust him with their kids if they thought he would be irresponsible! he definitely knows how to scold them even if it’s surprising when it happens! I’m glad you mentioned the tea scene, as I think it shows a different side to camilo! he is caring and he’s good at comforting people! he isn’t gonna try make a situation worse he cares about his mother and wants to assure her! and I hate when people use that scene against pepa too! it is normal to make your mother tea weirdos!!! I love that scene despite how brief it is and we see glimpses of that side of camilo in the comics too!
As for mirabel 100% agree! she definitely strikes me as someone the kids would view as the cool older best friend much more than a parental figure. They don’t want to make her mad because in their eyes she’s cool! she’s fun and entertaining and they don’t want to make her mad! it’s not the case of a parent where it’s they know they’ll get in trouble for it! that’s partly what inspired my camp counselor au lmao! the fact mirabel is so good with kids in a way she makes them feel validated she doesn’t reprimand them she is someone they view as a friend! The mirabel is antonios mother fic genre is one I completely avoid i love their relationship because she is so much more of an older sister figure to him! I’ve said before I don’t like these fics so I tend to avoid them even if I don’t really read fics anymore lmao!
but I agree with most of your points! camilo is always seen as the fun one whilst mirabel is the parental one when in canon it’s the other way around! that’s not to say camilo isn’t fun because he absolutely is but we see him actually babysitting we see mirabel just hanging out with kids for fun! what I really need to see is mirabel and camilo as a babysitting duo that would be so fun!! both of them are 15 and deserve to have fun!! let mirabel have fun!! I would love to see more stuff involving camilos nurturing side for sure though!

I haven't written Encanto fic in a minute, huh? Anyway I banged this out in half an hour to stop me killing my co-workers, enjoy!
Tumblr media
One of the girls was passing it around in the back of church. This silly little folded paper star; you picked a number and a colour and it told your fortune. "You'll marry a rich man," Sofia Quintero whispered, to a chorus of giggles. "Pepa; do you want to try?"
Pepa Madrigal tossed her shiny auburn curls over one shoulder. "No thanks," she said haughtily. "I don't need toys to tell me my future. I can see it whenever I like."
"Pleeeeease Bruno!"
Pepa hung on the end of her brother's ruana as he stomped from room to room. "Please let me see. It's important! I can't let Sofia Quintero and her stupid piece of paper win."
Bruno ignored her.
"I'll do your chores for a week?"
He paused; just for a second, but Pepa noticed. Pepa always noticed. To everyone else, her brother was as hard to read as still water; to her, it was nothing at all.
"Please?" she begged. "Please. Please please please please pleeeeee--"
"Alright, alright!" Bruno stamped his foot, sandal slapping on the tile. "Jeez, Pep; what does it matter anyways?"
Pepa's face darkened. "It. Matters. You're a boy; you don't get it."
"Bruno's shoulders slumped. He didn't think it had anything to do with being a boy. But there was no arguing with Pepa when she got like this. "Ugh. Go get Juli. Might as well make it a party."
And a party it was; Juli smuggled snacks up to Bruno's room after bedtime and Pepa brought some blankets and stuffed animals from her room. They hadn't had a sleepover in Bruno's room in years.
"Ooooooooh!" Juli crowed as, in hues of green, an older version of Pepa was dipped by a handsome, dark-skinned man. "Oooooooooooh, Pepa, he's handsome!"
"I know," Pepa simpered; gracious and faux-humble, like she'd won a prestigious award. "I know."
Bruno wrinkled his nose as the man closed the distance between his lips and Older-Pepa's. "D'we have to watch the kiss?"
"YES!"
"Okay, okay, fine."
"Do me next," said Julieta, leaping onto Bruno's back and shaking his shoulders. "Me next, me next! I want to see my true love, Bruno!" She sighed dramamtically, her eyes going wide and dreamy. "I bet he's strong and graceful and a little bit bad. Not bad-bad, but just...bad enough. You know?"
Bruno had no idea.
Sand fell all around them as the vision ended. "Okay, Bruno sighed, handing the tablet to Pepa without even glancing her way. She squealed happily and kissed her future husband's glass cheek in delight. "Gimme one'a those arepas first. Gotta get my strength back. I'm fourteen, yanno. No spring chicken."
"Thank you Brunito."
"You're welcome, Oven Girl. Glad I'm here for you two to - to exploit."
"Bruno!"
"Don't make us feel bad; that's not fair!"
"S'okay, I'll accept payment in baked goods. Lucky for you."
As much as he complained, Bruno relished the time with his sisters. It was a memory he often looked back on fondly as they grew up, especially as the girls started courting and fell in love. It was nice to see their lives unfolding like that; like the end of the story written just under a folded piece of paper, out of sight for everyone else but them.
So when Dolores came to him - nine years old, shyly tugging on the hem of his ruana - and started talking bout one of her little playmates using some fortune telling game in school that day, he chuckled softly under his breath. "Sure, kiddo," he said, hoisting his sobrina onto his shoulders. "C'mon. Let's go see your husband, huh?"

Guys i had so much to do this week. But I PUSH TRUST I GOT Y'ALL 🦅🦅
So this is for the vampire au. One shots I have planned are Housebroken, Protective (likely Cutthroat), and Giant Siren. Gonna try and do art for them too 🤭
ANYWAY. LETS GET IT. MADRIGALS WON'T GET ROBBED 👺👺👺
-----
"Who are you?" The man whipped around, spooked by the sudden voice of a child. This house was ancient, no one had been said to live in it for years. The village around it was lively and bustling with activity, especially during the day, but it just didn't make sense why anyone would be in this house.
Standing there, was a girl. She couldn't have been older than 5 or 6 years old if that. She had on dark blue clothing, a dress that covered most of her body. Her appearance was clean and well-groomed. So she wasn't a beggar's child or anything of the sort.
"Why are you here?" Mirabel asked, her round green glasses reflecting the moonlight and shielding her eyes. Her face looked conflicted, though he couldn't truly tell because the rest of her face was concealed in darkness.
The man shifted, moving his bag out of sight from Mirabel. He didn't know if she lived here, but if she did, he didn't want her to try and stop him. The antiques he found were quite valuable, and he intended to get some money for them. He stared at Mirabel before scoffing. It was just a little girl. She couldn't do anything.
"None your business. What's a little girl like you doing here? It's dangerous at night," the man scoffed, and Mirabel giggled, confusing him.
"I'm always awake at night. Abuela says if we go outside to play in the day, we'll get sunburned," she said, looking at the man curiously. The man was about to respond when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He jumped, turning around, but no one was there. He turned back around and saw the girl, Mirabel, standing next to a boy. The two were digging around in his bag, which he noticed had been missing.
"What...? Hey! Give that back!" He said, reaching for the bag, but the two young children moved at an impossibly fast speed, evading him easily.
Camilo dug in the bag before pulling out an ornate chalice. "Hey, isn't this Abuela's?"
Mirabel stared at it before nodding. "Yeah...yeah it is," she looked at the man, who realized he had been caught. Camilo dumped the bag's contents on the floor. All of it was Alma's, or someone else's. "Are you stealing from us?"
The man backed away. Mirabel's voice was weirdly calm, but it was...unsettling. Something just wasn't right. She walked closer, and so did Camilo. "Hey, back off."
"You stole from Abuela. She's not gonna be very happy," Camilo said, the man found himself being stared at by the two kids. They inched closer, and he noticed a strange red glow coming from their eyes. He began to slowly back away, his unease growing.
"I...I said back off," the man repeated, this time with more bass in his voice. But Camilo and Mirabel were persistent. They were getting closer, and he didn't like the eerie look in their eyes.
"Won't you stay for dinner? Maybe you can apologize. Abuela is very forgiving," Mirabel asked innocently, though the man could sense a much darker, sinister intent to her words.
Creeped out, the man turned, rushing down the hallway, his bag of valuables forgotten. He needed to figure out how to get out of this house. But as he ran, back the way he came, he became confused. This...was the way he came right? It was only a few turns he took. But suddenly the house was like a labyrinth. Constantly changing, the hallways and corridors growing longer, imposing. He slowed, realizing he wasn't being chased, looking around. He could hear the faint sound of thunder rumbling in the distance. He rather not stay, he didn't want to meet those kids' grandmother.
As he walked, looking for the staircase, or an exit at least, he felt a force stop him. Stumbling back, he looked around, then down slightly. A girl stood there, she was rather tall, though she was probably only 9 or maybe 10.
"Who are you?" The girl asked. Once again, she was clean, her dress neatly pressed and her brown hair pulled into a bun. Unlike the two younger children he encountered though, this one seemed much more...intimidating in a way. He couldn't explain it, but the look in her eyes gave him the same creeps as before.
"I...I'm just trying to get out. I don't want any trouble," the man stammered out; he didn't think that would happen. He sounded much more confident in his head.
The girl, Luisa, then smiled. It looked like she was trying to come off as warm and welcoming, but it wasn't working. Maybe it was the dim light from the candles across her face, or maybe it was the way she stood, but he got the opposite feeling of feeling welcomed. "Won't you stay for dinner?" she asked, her voice deceptively sweet.
That question again. Once again, it just sounded...off. Something wasn't right, these children were not normal. The man carefully walked around her, though she kept her steady gaze on him. As he walked away, he felt her grip his hand. Luisa was now staring at the man. "L-Let go," he said, trying to tug his hand away, but her grip was inhumane.
"Stay. For dinner," she repeated, her voice much lower now, and her smile was gone, replaced by a determined look.
Thoroughly scared, he pulled away with a hard tug, running away. This time he could hear her chasing after him, her footsteps surprisingly quiet compared to his. His lungs were burning as she raced down the hall. He quickly turned the corner, running into a room and shutting the door as quickly as he could. He could hear the sound of footsteps fading.
Turning around, he looked around the room. It was a shocking and rather drastic difference from the rest of the house while the walls were still a darker color, most everything else was light. White curtains were draped over the window. There were toys scattered, among other strange things. Baby items. His eyes fell on the white bassinet sitting by the window.
This was a nursery.
"There's no way..." The man drew closer and finally was hovering over the crib. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. A baby. It was a baby. It looked like a boy, swaddled in warm, pale yellow, almost white clothing. Compared to the other kids he had encountered he looked innocent enough.
The man stared for a moment, noticing what was in the baby, Antonio's, hand. It was a cup, an ornated bejeweled one. And the gems look real. The man carefully reached into the crib. The baby seemed unphased until the man started prying the chalice away. It took a moment, seeing that Antonio seemed to have a grip on it, but he got it away.
"These...these are real emeralds..." The man mumbled, admiring the stones. This would go for a lot of money. "What's a baby like you doing with something like this?"
The man paid little attention to Antonio, who began to whimper and whine. The man was too busy to notice the door opening quietly. Antonio rolled over, using the edge of the bassinet to stand up. His eyes drifted from his stolen chalice to the door, and he broke into a smile, giggling as he reached for whoever was at the door. The man noticed and turned to see what the babe was so excited about. "What are you...!"
The man froze when he saw an elderly woman standing there. There were two younger girls, different from the ones before, though they looked like they could be related. But the man was more focused on the woman, who was holding what looked like a bottle in her hands; it didn't look like milk though...
"I ask again," the older said, her eyes narrowing. "Who are you, and why are you in here with my grandson with his cup?"
The man seemed to realize she had asked him a question, stuttering as he dropped the cup, the sound of it clattering on the ground filling the room before he spoke. "I...I uh...he..."
"The man watched as the three previous children from before walked up behind the woman, the younger two hiding behind her dress while the one who was chasing him before stood next to the older girl with long, black hair. "That's him," she said, pointing to the man.
The older woman looked at the man before moving towards him. He tensed up but relaxed when she walked past him and to the bassinet. She picked up Antonio, who giggled as his small hands grabbed at her shawl. The older woman turned to the man with an ominous smile.
"How rude of me. My name is Alma, and these are my grandchildren," she said warmly, and the man relaxed a bit more. "Please excuse their behavior. They don't see many people, and certainly not in recent years."
"I-I...uh..." The man looked at the children nervously, though they seemed to calm down in the presence of who he assumed was their abuela. "A-All good..."
Alma cradled Antonio, her hand carefully hovering over him. He attempted to grab the bottle in her hand, babbling and seemingly occupied by the promise of food. Alma looked towards the man, her smiling widening. "You should stay for dinner. I insist."

They're so silly (they haven't eaten in 3 days).
No but like. It's insane how bro tried to rob them and then copped an attitude when they confronted him. Like what did you expect 💀💀 anyway. Alma is very forgiving <333 (she's not)
This what bro looked like the whole time Alma was talking to him btw

Daisies and buns
Carlota was used to Isabela bursting into the bakery in the middle of the day. And she was used to the Madrigal making a pink daisy all of sudden
For the Madrigay days! Love our lesbian queen!
Carlota looked up at the sound of ringing bells as the bakery door slammed open. She groaned, seeing a golden metal being ripped off a ribbon. Somebody should tell this Madrigal girl to stop breaking in like this.
"Hey, do you need help?" Isabela placed her elbows on the stand, flipping her long eyelashes.
After Casita's fall thing, the eldest Madrigal grandchild took a full turn in herself. Now extremely awkward and open, instead of the perfect gentle flower Carlota always saw her as. Even if she didn't really care for the most time. That's until Isabela accidentally broke the shutters in her bakery's window. And, what's more, instead of asking her sister, who was now focused on construction, she claimed that she could do it perfectly herself. Needless to say, the new window wasn't even closing well, as two shutters hit eachother.
"Hola to you too." Carlota sighed, at this point she had expected Isabela to come. The latter showed up in the bakery often, either asking if she could help or just bragging some nonsense about the plants. Carlota hoped for the second option. After allowing Isabela to cook once she now knew better than to let her into the kitchen ever again. And maybe she could use how much Isabela tells her about the plants for the new food to make. And it also was interesting to listen to how passionate Isabela was. "Are you for long?"
Isabela tossed her straight black hair back. "Probably, mi hermanitas are being annoying again." She shrugged, crossing her arms.
Carlota couldn't really say anything about this. She didn't have a big family. The only child who took the family's bakery after her mamá retired.
She didn't think she and Isabela had much in common. Especially if you talk about Madrigal's new persona. But again, she barely knew Isabela before. Her main close point with her was that Isabela was an older sister of her classmate. And yet again, she didn't talk much to Luisa, as she was too busy for the most part.
"You painted your fresh again?" Carlota asked, noticing the new bright purple spot on the elegant sleeve and the right chest. "Looks good on you!"
Isabela gulped, several white and pink flowers bloomed in her hair. "Really?" She widened her eyes, covering her mouth. Just for a moment before she got her composure back. Isabela picked out the flowers, leaving them on the stand.
As much as Carlota loved to pretend to be annoyed with Isabela's shenanigans, she adored her small shy smile after being complimented. Not that crazy wildness, even if it was enjoyable too, but the shocked surprise for a second of her time. Carlota picked one of the daises Isabela just made, twisting it between her fingers. Sliding the tip over a small petal. Looks pretty. Everything Isabela did was perfect to the core, no matter how much she denied it.
Isabela chuckled, looking away. Almost squeaking. "Ah, mmm... I... Gotta go!" Her eyes ran all over the place, as she bit her lip. "Need to feed Remi! The boy has grown so much!" She exclaimed proud as it always was when talking about her homeplants.
Carlota stared in confusion. A moment before Isabela planned on staying. Now she talked about feeding a carnivous plant that was her proclaimed son. But just as this, the eldest Madrigal granddaughter disappeared into visible nowhere. Leaving a scratching emptiness that nobody else could fill. Maybe Isabela will visit again? It was so boring without her around. Isabela could fill any place, creating a magic environment just by the mere fact of her existence.
Carlota lay on her bed, leafing through a book that Isabela gave her a while ago. The yellow paper of the old pages and dull images of the flowers. The language that people in the Victorian era had made. The moon shined through the curtain. The flame of a candlestick played on the bedside table.
"Oh, daisies, she muttered, throwing a look at the dry pink thing on her table. Left after Isabela's visit a while ago. Her eyes slid down the text. Isabela had mentioned that her powers were related to her mood, splashing with emotions. Even if it wasn't to the same extent as Pepa.
Carlota blinked, looking down at the text. "Pink daisies are a good way to confess in love?" Carlita muttered to herself. Feeling the blood getting to her cheeks. Her heartbeat got faster as she buried her face in her hands in confusion.
It probably should be a coincidence...
But, now as she thought about it... It was nowhere near the first time Isabela made pink flora by accident when Carlota saw her.
"Goddamit..." Ricaurte gasped, lying down, taking deep breaths to calm down her crazy heart. Praying that Dolores wasn't listening. She stared at the jumping yellow flame, trying to focus on anything. There was zero way Isabela had any feelings for her. Why would she? But why did she grow flowers so often near Carlota? The baker kept her face in her pillow, trying not to make a sound.

Regarding the post about your last Madrigals x OC post - how did the Madrigals meet their SO's and why did they end up in a relationship? What made them stick together?
I noticed that Isabela and Luisa date people from each-others friend groups which sound really funny, I need to know how it happened lol
Oh yeah, Dolores really appreciated Isabela doing that 💀. (Isabela didn’t care as much with Luisa).
This is a long post and I was only doing short summaries.
Most of them met in school. It’s a small town, they probably only had the one school - unless you want to be really historically accurate (in which case girls and boys would be separated), then two - either way, they all knew each other early on. There isn’t more than a couple years between them, so even if they weren’t in the same class, they would have seen each other in the playground. Especially given the status of the Madrigals. But, some of them didn’t form proper connections until much later on.
Alfonso & Bruno:
Alfonso and Bruno (and Félix, but this ain’t about him) had been friends throughout their time at school. By the time they finished school (15/16 ish), Bruno realised his feelings weren’t as platonic as they use to be. Probably had many awkward instances of attempting to flirt with him and failing, partially as Alfonso hadn’t realised he was bi yet. Bruno’s reputation slowly began falling away over the next few years, resulting in him distancing himself from his childhood friend; not wanting him to be treated badly by associating with him. Alfonso never really got why - he never saw Bruno as this villain like the rest of the town slowly came to view him as.
Cut to Bruno’s return, he avoided Alfonso as much as he could at the start of Casita’s rebuild. Eventually, he was setup to talk to him by his sisters or by his older nieces - I haven’t quite decided yet, but I could see both of these scenarios working. Regardless, Bruno and Alfonso got to talking and became friends again. By the end of the rebuild, the two were dating. They both are very open with each other and gain a lot of confidence when they are together, which definitely helps them stay together. They bring out the best in each other!
Isabela & Lili:
Isabela has always been aware of Lili, who was Dolores’ childhood best friend (Mariano being Isa’s). Once free from her engagement and embracing her true self, she was quite open that she was a lesbian. And then slowly had to accept what a girl failure she was when it came to her crushes. So she kept quiet about the crush she had gained for Lili. She was locked into further silence when Dolores mentioned to her that Luisa had a crush on Lili and - not wanting to have to relive the whole Mariano thing - kept clear out of the way.
Even long after Luisa had clearly gotten over said crush and mentioned over a hundred times that she had a new crush, who later became her girlfriend, Isabela didn’t dare go after something she wanted herself. If it wasn’t Luisa, there would potentially be someone else she’d hurt. Mariano began to notice her acting odd and asked her what’s wrong, getting her to open up about everything. He assured her as best as he was able and even offered to help Isabela with some of her flirting skills and getting her a chance to speak with Lili away from the public eye.
It was during some town festival that Mariano managed to pull Lili aside from the rest of her and Dolores’ friend group to “meet” Isabela. Isabela still was her girl failure self and gave Mariano more than enough secondhand embarrassment to last the rest of his life, but Lili took it all really well and was extremely flattered. She asked Isabela to dance and that was that. They were found making out in by Dolores (on accident) several hours later.
Dolores was initially not very thrilled about this. Realising with somewhat over exaggerated horror that it meant Isabela would just be around her 24/7 - not only at home, but now she would just be crashing the friend group to hangout with her girlfriend. Though, as Isabela continues to remind her, she is dating Mariano (who is part of Isabela’s friend group), so she doesn’t really have the high ground here of not mixing friend and family.
Luisa & Marta:
Marta is part of Isabela’s friend group but is a much more recent member, she joined sometime in the middle of Casita’s rebuild. Though she spent a decent part of it admiring Luisa, as a lot of the ladies did. As much as Isabela is a huge girl failure, Luisa is a bit of a flirt, charmer, ladies’ woman, whatever you want to call her! Luisa clearly knows she’s a gorgeous and wonderful woman, okay?
After she got over her crush on Lili, Luisa had noticed Marta among her admirers and focused the attention on her. Mutual pinning. She began seeking her out more often, whether she was on a round of chores or just in her own free time. Isabela, as previously stated, was happy enough for Luisa to date her friend and probably was the cost in of this ship - definitely not as a way of learning how to date girls. What? Why would you say that?
Luisa planned a very romantic first date/picnic for them to get to know each other. They now have one of these every couple of weeks. Definitely one of the most chill and least dramatic relationships in the Madrigal family. Oh and yes, Lili has bragged to the Luisa fan club that they are dating.
Camilo & Marco:
They are in the same class at school. Always have been. Became friends very early on. Their families were also very close beforehand, which definitely helped when planning to spend time together outside of school. Their families probably got together every so often anyways. Camilo has been crushing on Marco for at least a good couple of years before he did anything. Definitely wrote things like “C+M 4 EVER” in his diary or on his schoolwork or whatever. Marco had been crushing on Camilo too, but was infinitely more subtle about it.
It during the end of the rebuild before Camilo’s sixteenth birthday that the pair of them both happened to confess their feelings at the same time. It was a little awkward but overall very sweet for a couple of teenagers newly in love. They are still learning and growing as they go, but it’s a journey they’d rather face together.
Mirabel & Sera:
These two got together three years after the miracle returned, when they were roughly 18 and 19.
But, we need to backtrack a little first. By the time they finished school, Sera had been crushing on Mirabel for a while but had been advised by Camilo that it was going to be a hell of a mission - Mira had never dated anyone nor had even the smallest of crushes. There was no way to gage what would be the best thing to try to get her to go on at least one date with Sera.
Sera settled on writing a short love letter/poem, remembering what an avid reader Mirabel had been in school and assumedly still was. Given how often you could spot her with a book in hand. Mirabel corrected the letter of its spelling and grammar, like the smartass she is, and then returned it to Sera. Sera found it endearing and funny, Mirabel was marvelled that someone hadn’t immediately gotten annoyed with her smartass behaviour. Sera accepted that Mirabel just wasn’t interested and offered to be friends instead, to which Mirabel agreed.
(Just to clarify, Sera had a couple of girlfriends during this time. She wasn’t just pining after Mirabel for years).
At 19, Mirabel realised she’d grown incredibly fond of Sera. Even beyond platonic. She was very attached to her “best friend”. And maybe Isabela overheard her confessing this to Luisa and then told Dolores. And maybe Dolores then went on to spread the gossip to Camilo. And maybe Camilo then told Sera. Now knowing Mirabel a lot better, Sera decided to try again. This time with a basket of wool. Mirabel did say yes but asked they take it slowly, as she still didn’t quite understand these “alien” romantic feelings. Sera was happy enough to do so.

FABril Day 1 - Crush
G, 2103 words, The triplets crush on Félix.
--
The triplets sat on the Ortizes’ wall, facing the big construction site while they did — as Pepa called it — “boywatching”. A few guys their age and up had been asked to lend a helping hand with the construction of the new church. The town was growing exponentionally in both resources and population and the little chapel that had been hastily built when the Encanto first formed hadn’t sufficed for years.
Naturally, Bruno was looking at boys along with Pepa and Juli, because why wouldn’t he?
The triplets were fourteen and busy as anything with their miracles. They were old enough that Mamá didn’t always have to manage them together anymore. Julieta had been standing with the other merchants at the plaza to give away her little care packages, and Pepa and Bruno joined her on their breaks. Pepa never had much to do this time of the season except be sunny, and Bruno was glad to be away from Ma and her worried hovering for a little while.
(Though he appreciated that she still sat in on the visions. They had been getting weirder and worse and she worried about them, so that’s why it didn’t make Bruno feel too guilty for indulging in her affection a little bit longer. Still, a guy had to have his private moments away from his mami. Albeit with his sisters.)
“Ugh, he doesn’t even know I exist!” Julieta exploded, burying her face into her hands.
Félix had just walked past them, grinning and calling out a casual “hey, Bruno, ladies.” The air around them instantly heated up as Pepa stared with half-lidded eyes, cocking her head ponderously.
It was unanimous to anyone with eyes that Félix was a dreamboat, even if Pepa always feigned disinterest by complaining about how annoying he was. (In later years, this would only inflame her fixation on him.) He was two years older than them and way out of their league. He had stocky arms and a smile that could fight Pepa’s sunrays for attention, and as he carried a wheelbarrow packed with sandbags past them they could clearly see his muscles bulge from the effort.
It took Bruno a belayed second to wiggle his fingers back at him, and then he realized he could totally have hammed it up and pulled out one of his Don Juan-type characters to charm him--
No, too much. Too much, Bruno. That’ll never work.
“What are you talking about?” he said to Julieta, dopey smile still on his face as he watched Félix go.
“Of course he knows who you are!” Pepa added. “Duh, we’re the Madrigals.” She gestured over the three of them because it was obvious. They were the bearers of the miracle. And although Félix rarely got into accidents, he wasn’t exactly a stranger to Julieta’s magic.
Julieta stared abashedly in front of her. “I know that, but- ugh!” She threw her head down between her knees.
It was a bit surprising that she had such strong feelings for him. Bruno suspected she was just playing along, that she wasn’t really into Félix like he and Pepa were. That she just wanted to hang out with her siblings. He didn’t mind the dramatics, though.
Bruno kicked his feet. “Well, if he doesn’t know who you are it’ll leave more chance for us.”
“Oh, I’m not interested.” Pepa flicked her long frizzy hair over her shoulder. “I’m going to ask José out.”
“Which one?”
“Martinez.”
“Wow, that’s a familiar last name. I wonder who you’re trying to make jealous with that.”
She pouted. A little cloud floated over her head for a moment, but it cleared up when her expression did, suddenly struck by a fantasy. “I could have them fight over me.” She clutched her chest. “Oh, wouldn’t that be the talk of the town?”
“Oh, oh, oh!” Bruno chimed in. “A battle of life and death between cousins. José wins your hand, which leaves Félix wounded and in the care of your handsome brother who’s always been more understanding of him and knows what he deserves and gives him twice the attention you would.”
Julieta piped up, “If anyone is going to nurse him back to health, it’s me!”
“Oh, right!” That was a good fantasy too. “Yes…Yes! And that’s the moment he truly notices you! I’m standing in the doorway — I see the two of you right as I’m about to confess my feelings to him, but I realize he’s not in love with me. He’s in love with you. So I nobly walk away and let you guys follow your hearts instead.”
--
But in reality there was no jealousy. There was no battle. There was no kneeling next to a sickbed as either Julieta or Bruno dabbed blood or sweat away from Félix’s forehead and, in this intimacy, dared to kiss his lips with surprise bravery.
A boy arrived in the Encanto like a mirage. The first people who spotted him and his parents had to squint to make sure they didn’t recognize them since everybody knew everybody in an isolated town like theirs, but when it was established that they really must be strangers, they were quickly taken in.
They were refugees like anyone else, but unfamiliar as the trio was, the town didn’t quite trust them yet. Agustín, for example, hadn’t been invited to help out on the cathedral with the other boys until it was well near finished, and when the triplets’ quince came around, Mamá did not allow him to dance with Julieta, who’d asked Bruno — who had become fast friends with Agustín — to invite him as her chaperone. Mamá didn’t like, or rather, didn’t trust, how comically clumsy he was, the exact reason Julieta had become so well acquainted with him (and as a result completely lost eyes for Félix).
Agustín was also tall, slender and friendly, and Bruno wondered why he again liked the same boy his sister liked. It wasn’t like he’d even lost Félix out of his periphery yet.
Wasn’t that greedy of him? That he’d like to maybe reach around their shoulders and hold hands with both boys too. Félix, Pepa, him in the middle, Julieta, Agustín.
“Eh, stupid. Fantasies,” he’d dismiss himself, never quite shaking off that happy ending.
--
Félix danced with Pepa on their quinceañera and that was it for them.
Bruno stood next to Mam, clutching her black mourning shroud as green overtook his vision and his body went rigid with alarm. Seeing the slender arms of an older Pepa around Félix’s broad waist, moving him however she wanted because he yielded so easily for her; seeing Félix pull up a wide umbrella big enough to shield both of them from Pepa’s stormy cloud as she cried against his shoulder; seeing them kiss.
Mamá quickly and effortlessly disappeared him from the crowd of attendants before anyone could notice his impromptu vision. Sand stirred precariously around his feet, his eyes wide and frightening.
“Querido, sit down.” She placed him on the single chair at the food-bedecked table of the dining room, chairs placed elsewhere in Casita for the party. The music was dampened just enough to put the two of them in a little bubble. Mamá’s hand cupped his cheek. “Are you alright?”
The vision had gone. Bruno slumped, hands hanging between his knees, and he nodded.
“What was it? Your expression- ay, Bruno, why now?” She said this last part more to herself than him, knuckle to her lip as she thought of its significance, or importance thereof, with a deep frown.
“No, it was a good one, Mami,” he stopped her from worrying. He noticed he was still clutching her shroud like a lifeline and let go.
“Are you sure?” Her voice was sharp.
“Yeah. I’m sorry. I can’t tell you about it yet, but you’ll like it. It’s not going to happen for a while.”
Relief washed over her in a full-body shudder. “Oh… Thank you, Brunito.”
“Go back to them, okay?” He waved at the party-goers. “I’m alright. Knock on wood.” He rapped his knuckles three times against the table.
“Gracias a dios, I will.” She knocked as well, then took his face in her hands and kissed his forehead. “Eat something, alright, mijo? Then come back. We’ll talk about your vision tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
She adjusted her shroud and rejoined the party, hands jubilantly up in the air as she cheered for her daughters. Like the upsetting diversion had never happened.
When she was out of sight, Bruno slid off the table, pushing his wrists against his stinging eyes, keeping the tears at bay.
He wasn’t crying. He could never betray Pepa by being jealous of her. If he wanted Félix to come into the dining room, find him in a mess, and caress his tears away with soft sturdy words like he one day would for Pepa, that was just a separate feeling.
It wasn’t until Julieta descended from the courtyard — frantically looking around for her brother whom she knew wasn’t comfortable at big parties, especially when he had nothing to perform, a role to play, and who’d gotten more and more prone to strange meltdowns — that Bruno realized Casita had gently moved him to a more secluded space. Julieta found him tucked behind a flower pot between the corner and a cabinet, protected from stray guests spotting him. Casita moved the pot out of the way for Julieta, who squeezed herself in next to Bruno and asked what was the matter.
Her brows were furrowed and he could tell she was trying to temper her anger that she had to take a break from her own party to comfort him. But she still looked for him.
He laid his head on her shoulder.
“I’m always just going to have you,” he said softly, still kind of hoping it’d be Félix coming to get him. Or even his friend Agustín (who’d been invited, just not to act out the traditions).
“Obviously I’m missing something here or else you wouldn’t say something as mean as that,” Julieta said a tad offended, squeezing his shoulders. The annoyance she had so far kept in check came out sharp.
He slapped his face with his hands. “I always say it wrong…”
“Bruno, just calm down, okay? What happened?” She breathed in through her nose, calming herself. “Did you have a vision?”
She sounded like their mother, but unlike with Mamá he could actually share his feelings with his sister.
“Yeah,” he said. “Félix isn’t going to like me back.”
“Oh…”
He rubbed his eyes, then balled his fists around his knees. “I’m so stupid. Nobody in the Encanto is like me, I know that. I’m just weirdo freak Bruno. But I never even tried with him, you know? And now I’ve ruined it. I’m such a coward.”
“You’re not a coward, Bruno.” She bit her lip and frowned. “And you’re not a freak. You can try with other boys, maybe.”
Bruno thought of Agustín and the way Julieta sometimes looked at him, and decided he really couldn’t. “...I don’t want to make it awkward.”
“But you won’t know until you try-” The two triplets considered that for a second. “Sorry. You could know, of course.”
What was the point of trying if Bruno could toss his sand and burn incense like Mamá showed him and see for himself what he wasn’t brave enough to do? Julieta had a point, but he just wasn’t like that. He wanted to be certain first.
“No, don’t be. I’m just…being difficult again.”
She had no reply to that. “Bruno, can I be honest?”
“Yes. Always.”
“I don’t know how to help you with this.”
“That’s okay,” he said lightly. As if she could pull out clear-cut advice for every situation hidden in her pockets. That’d be the real miracle.
“And…And I really just wanna go back to the party.”
“Yeah, of course.”
“With you.”
The thing about having feelings at the age of fourteen is that, in most cases, those feelings will pass when they aren’t nurtured. On Julieta’s signal — a slight nod towards him and Pepa as they rejoined the dance court — Bruno was reminded of their plan and pulled out his firecrackers, disrupting the careful traditional dancing of their friends and their dance partners until everyone, guests and hosts, was roped into la hora loca craziness. He hugged Félix, he hopped in circles with Agustín. Bruno cried out and danced with his sisters and even goaded Mamá into a wild dance as he shook every bad feeling about the prophecy away.
Because all it should’ve been was exciting.

Could you write a Camilo x male reader fanfiction preferably fluff where y/n is a friend of mirabel who is the same age as Camilo and is described to be really warm and sweet with blue eyes and pink hair and the story follows their relation ship
Girl yes!! Thank you for being one of my early requests like you do you queen/king/thing!! Also y/n is a bit shy in this🥰
TW: Male reader, encanto
"Hey y/n would you like to come to mi casa this afternoon, mi familia's cooking empanadas and they really want to meet you anyway!" Mirabel asked. Currently y/n and mirabel were walking to y/n's house after shopping at the plaza. "I don't know, im lowkey a bit nervous to meet your familia... I mean they all have powers so wouldn't I stand out?.." Y/n asked, he was an outgoing person sure, but anyone would be nervous to meet the madrigal family. Especially considering they are the only thing keeping this town together. "Girl i've lived there my whole life without powers and the only thing that's ever happened to me is being shit talked in front of my own eyes by my abuela, im sure you'll be ok." Mirabel said, without a trace of depression. "Um, ok sure if you really want me to..." Y/n said, getting ready to meet the madrigals.
Later on at the casa:
Y/n straightened his back (unlike his sexuality) and knocked on la casa's door. He was then greeted by not mirabel, but her older sister Isabella. "Omg hola, you must be mirabel's quirky little friend y/n?" Isabella asked. Y/n tried to keep his confidence up, he was talking to the girl that could make her own plants, if he messed up he would kill himself on the spot. "Y-yes! It's a pleasure to meet you Isabella!" Y/n said, cringing at his stuttering. "No need to be nervous! Our familia is so excited to meet you!" Isabella said, signaling him to come inside. "T-that's nice to hear..." Was all y/n could splurt out before dashing inside.
Y/n tried to look around for his friend Mirabel, but all he could see was the madrigal family smiling, waving and talking to him. He couldn't handle all the attention so he politely asked if there was a baño nearby. Julieta, Mirabel's mother, pointed him to down the hallway. So he awkwardly excused himself to the baño.
He was on his way when he noticed someone coming down the stairs. It was mirabel! Finally. Y/n smiled and called out for her, in which she waved back. But what y/n didn't know is that he was NOT looking in front of him. He was about to run into a wall, but thankfully casa came in clutch and pushed him backwards with tiles. It was a bit too hard though, because he ended up crashing into someone who was trying to talk to him behind him. He fell into the arms of none other than Camilo Madrigal. His hands were on y/n's waist as y/n sat in his lap, both of them in an awkward position on the floor. "O-oh my gosh i am so so so so sorry! I wasn't looking where I was going and!-" Y/n was cut off with a cute chuckle coming from Camilo. "Woah woah relax mi amigo! It's all good, calm down!" Camilo said patting y/n's shoulder. "Are you y/n? Mirabel's friend?" Camilo asked as y/n nodded silently. Y/n turned around to see his face and immediately blushed from how close they were to each others lips. Camilo and y/n stopped talking and stared into each others eyes. But before they could do anything else, they were cut off by Mirabel screaming.
"Y/N?!?!? CAMILO??! WHAT ARE YOU BOYS DOING???" Mirabel was definitely not expecting this. "I-its not what it looks like! I bumped into him by accident and we got into this awkward position!" Y/n said getting up, Camilo getting up too. "Well whatever your excuse is, just hurry up and let's go to the table!" Mirabel said dragging y/n to the dining room, leaving camilo awkwardly waving at y/n goodbye as they both blushed.
Everyone sat at the dinner table and y/n noticed camilo taking the seat opposite him, where they both awkwardly blushed and smiled at each other. Mirabel noticed this, and flung her napkin to y/n's face to get him back on track. "So y/n, what do you think of our casa? It's pretty cool isn't it?" Luisa asked, trying to start a conversation. "Yes it's very beautiful, but it's also way bigger on the inside than i expected!" Y/n responded, taking a bite into his empanada. It was delicious. "Oh my Ms. Julieta, this food is amazing!" Y/n said, biting viciously into his food. "Gracias Y/n, all the best for Mirabel's friend!" She said, happy that y/n was enjoying her food. Abuela then spoke up. "So Y/n, is there something going on between you and mirabel?" Abuela asked, making Mirabel, Y/n and Camilo spit their food out. "Ay watch it! I just cleaned the table cloth!" Pepa yelled, smacking Camilo across the back of his head as he wiped his mouth. "N-no abuela! Not at all! Y/n's just a friend! In fact he's ga-" Y/n stomped on Mirabel's foot before she could continue, making Mirabel yelp in pain. Y/n didn't need the madrigals knowing he was a fruitpop, especially Camilo. He didn't know why, but Y/n just couldn't let Camilo find out. Camilo probably took the hint though, as he stared at y/n confused. Before anyone could talk, y/n got a call from his backpack, which casita threw over to him so he could answer. "Who is it?" Mirabel whispered as everyone slowly started talking to each other. "It's my mum, give me a second." Y/n said answering the phone. After a few minutes he hung up with a sad expression.
"Sorry everyone, but my mother needs help at home, so i will unfortunately be leaving early. Thank you for having me!" Y/n said getting up and leaving as everyone waved goodbye. As he was about to leave, someone grabbed his hand. Camilo, who was blushing. "H-hey um.. I know we didn't talk much this evening but.. if you ever wanna hang out around the casa without my loser of a cousin mirabel, i could always show you around. Even a personal secret tour of my room!" Camilo said proudly, making y/n smile to himself on how cute Camilo was trying to impress people. "Of course Camilo! Until then." Y/n said waving him goodbye. Unlike last time, Y/n wasn't so nervous about going to the casa anymore.

I think Bruno should be one of the shortest people in Encanto just for the sheer hilarity of it. Like, imagine everyone talking about this really scary dude with glowing eyes, innumerable number of rats and a personality of a recluse, who by some accounts could curse you by reading your future, who brings bad luck everywhere he goes, and then you meet him and he's just. Some anxious small man, barely taller than his youngest niece. He's got one of the biggest and saddest eyes you've ever seen, and to look you straight into eyes he'd need to stand on a stool, and he looks like he'd rather be doing literally anything else except talking to people.
(he has a small horde of rats, and (sometimes) glowing eyes, and the reputation of local cryptid. also he is around 165 cm tall and has anxiety)

Mi Vida (Bruno Madrigal x Reader)
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Ship: Bruno Madrigal x Reader (She/Her pronouns)
Tags: Fluff, Madrigal grandkids bonding, Camilo being a prankster, flustered Bruno
Warnings: None:)
Synopsis: Y/N joins the Madrigal grandkids’ game of truth or dare. Things get interesting when Bruno is mentioned.
‘What are you guys doing?’ Y/N asked as she walked up to the Madrigal’s house. The grandkids were sitting in a circle in the front. They turned to her.
‘Señorita Y/N! You here to see my Mom and Tía Pepa?’ Mirabel asked.
‘Yeah but I want to know what you troublemakers are up to first.’ Y/N put her hands on her hips.
‘We’re playing truth or dare!’ Camilo said with excitement.
‘Oh truth or dare huh? I’m in!’ She said, taking a seat in the circle.
‘Wha? Really? I didn’t think grown ups played this game!’ Antonio shouted.
‘Only the fun ones.’ She gave him a wink. The others chuckled. ‘So, who’s turn is it?’
‘Camilo’s.’ Isabela said with a sinister smile.
‘Alright prima what you got for me?’ Camilo leaned back. The older cousin pondered to herself then turned to Y/N.
‘Y/N help me out here.’ Y/N glared at Camilo playfully.
‘Hmmm… I dare you… to shapeshift into your Mamí Pepa and stuff your face with Julieta’s freshly made arepas.’ All the cousins gasped then fell into a fit of giggles. Camilo stood up.
‘Alright Y/N. I accept your dare.’ He shapeshifted into Pepa and began to walk inside. All the cousins ran after him, wanting to see Julieta’s reaction.
He reached the kitchen where the arepas had been beautifully displayed and began to stuff his face.
‘Pepa?’ Julieta questioned as she reentered.
‘Oh uh.’ Camilo managed to say with his mouth full. ‘Sorry hermana I was hungry.’
Camilo ran out of the room as the others laughed and ran after him. Julieta tutted.
‘Camilo! I’m going to tell your mother about this!’
The group all fell to the floor laughing as Camilo finished chewing.
‘Okay Y/N.’ Camilo pointed at her. ‘Since we’ve all been playing a while, I think it’s only fair that you have two rounds right now!’
‘Alright then.’ Y/N shrugged. ‘Truth.’
‘Do you like our Tío Bruno?’ Camilo grinned. The younger cousins ‘oooo’ed. Dolores and Isabela gave Camilo a disapproving look.
‘Camilo don’t ask her that.’ Dolores said.
‘It’s fine Dolores. I can handle it.’ Y/N smirked. ‘Of course I like Bruno. I like all of the Madrigals.’
‘Come on, you know what I meant.’ Camilo pushed.
‘I don’t know what you want. I answered the question.’ Y/N shrugged.
She knew her crush on their uncle was obvious enough. She would give him more attention than his sisters, she would go out of her way to talk to him when she saw him in town, she would ask about her future more than anyone else in Encanto. And although she’s never told Bruno, she was also never embarrassed when others hinted at it.
‘I choose dare for my second. Camilo, hit me with your best shot!’ Camilo smirked.
‘Okay Señorita Y/N. Since you’re acting so bold, I dare you… to call my Tío Bruno mi vida!’ The shapeshifter pointed a finger. The others gasped. Dolores stood up.
‘Camilo. That’s enough.’
‘It’s okay Dolores.’ Y/N said. ‘I can handle it.’
‘Wha? Really?’ Camilo asked with excitement.
‘Yup. I’ll do it. Now where is the lovely Bruno?’ She asked, looking around. Just as she said that, he walked out of casitá. Y/N began to walk over to him as the others ran and hid.
‘Good morning Bruno!’
‘Oh Y/N good morning. Here to see my sisters?’
‘You know me.’
‘Well they’re in the kitchen right now. I think Camilo pulled a prank or something.’
‘Ah that Camilo boy, always a troublemaker. I’ll see you around, mi vida.’ Y/N placed her hand on Bruno’s face before walking away. Bruno stood there frozen.
Did she really just say that? No. No I must have misheard her. But she definitely said it. Maybe it wasn’t aimed at me. Yeah. Yea- no there’s no one else around.
He stumbled around. Debating on wether or not to follow Y/N back inside. The grandchildren hid around the corner of the house giggling.
‘I feel kinda bad for Tío…’ Mirabel said.
‘Why?’ Camilo asked.
‘Well he thinks that señorita Y/N really meant that.’ Dolores smiled and shakes her head.
‘Oh she meant it.’

K gonna do my responses to things I have a response to/opinion on under a read more because long post is long and I feel like having (silly) opinions so let's go!
- I don’t think camilo is an asshole who’s heartless and I hate content that portrays him as such
- pepa is not a bad parent because of one 5 second scene where camilo comforts her
BOTH! OF! THESE! Like I love sassy twerp Camilo and imperfect Pepa but there's more to them than that and they are not thee things! This is why I'm selective about my engagement with fandom XD
- julietas trauma is undermined a lot of the time and compared to her daughters
AND her siblings. As a kid she likely saw and heard about thing no child ever should - much like Bruno - and had the responsibility to make it all better. That has to haunt her, along with being parentified and having the perfectionism foisted on her (my headcanon). She's complex!
- comparing the characters trauma is weird
It's the oppression olympics all over again, I thought we were pat that.
- i don’t think isabela is crazy violent post movie and would hate to be seen that way
TBH I don't think she changes all that much; circumstances around her change and she has a lot more freedom and is more ready to speak her mind/behave how she likes, but the Senorita Perfecta act was not 100%...well, an act. She's a bit more chaotic but isn't going to suddenly be more dangerous than she already inherently was.
- I don’t like the take that bruno avoided the kids pre movie I actually think he would spend more time with them than the adults
Thiiiiiiis one I'm iffy on, partly because Jared said he'd been withdrawing for a long time before going into the walls but also because...idk, him having more connections makes him leaving worse (which I guess is the point). My main objections are fics which make like he was closer to her than her parents were because that's Gus and Juli slander and I personally won't stand for it XD
My personal view is he started retreating around the time Luisa was born and maybe connected more with the older girls and was maybe more in contact with them as time went on but Camilo and Mirabel he was much, much more hands-off. He didn't want to taint them, he wanted them to have a chance.
- I hate parentified mirabel. she’s 15 let her have fun she does not need to babysit people who are all older than her
If y'all can be "lol it's fine he's 15" with Camilo you HAVE to do the same with Mirabel, otherwise you need to examine a few things. she's a kid she'd allowed to be a kid please god let her have interests beyond ~becoming a part of the family~ the movie takes place over the mot STRESSFUL days of the Madrigals' lives I promise it was not like this all the time it was just a catalyst in this essay I will-
- isabela is smarter than she’s given credit for
Isabela can read a room better than anyone and thanks to years of practice can come up with the perfect thing to say to either smooth over or blow up a situation. She's a theater kid. She's clever. She's very quick-witted. She loves science. She was assigned Darwin in school (ok that's my headcanon).
- luisa is the most feminine out of the sisters but y’all discredit that because she has muscles even tho the movie has an entire song about how she wants to be seen as more than that.
I go back and forth on this; I feel like the song is implying she wishes she could just chill, ad yeah maybe for her that's unicorns and fluffiness, but I feel like she's also proud of her strength and physique. I know the two are not mutually exclusive but I feel like there's a middle ground and that's where I live.
- dolores can be fun
Dolores is a goddamn chaos troll just like both of her parent and ALSO a theater kid - they're all theater kid change my mind (you can't) and yes she can be silly and ridiculous.
- camilo is watered down to being just “crazy” but y’all ignore how caring and considerate he is too just cause he’s a teenage boy
He's a kooky mixed up kid but ultimately he's a Madrigal and a good boy. I'm extremely old and very cis so he didn't ring any bells for me but I'm not gonna reduce anyone in this family to a cliche.
- let mirabel say fuck
Heck, let her smoke (thanks @missilestorms )! I firmly believe everyone (except Antonio probably) was smoking in this moving when the camera was off them. I'm kidding. Don't smoke, kids, you Nana Seda doesn't because it's stinky and gross, but if this movie came out in the 80s or 90s....
Anyway, yeah, Mirabel can totally swear, she learned it from one of her friends.
- this one isn’t even a hot take anymore but none of the characters are perfect and that includes Bruno
I think I am the only person to have used the "Bruno Madrigal Needs A Slap/Bruno Madrigal Gets A Slap" tag combo but I stand by it. Bro is a dumbass (affectionate/derogatory)
- I think it takes a lot of time for isabela to fully embrace imperfection as we saw after wecid how fast she reverted back
Yeah, like I said above I don't think she's 100% Amazonian wild woman, there's shades of the facade she built in the person she is. It takes time for her to break from it fully, and longer to accept the parts of her that ARE perfect and pretty and effortless.
- isabela and mirabels relationship is mutually strained
1000%, mutual jealousy and mutual longing, and it's gonna take a while to heal that too. It can't be solved with a huuuuug.
- mirabel was just as ignorant as everyone else and I’m tired of y’all acting like she knew the whole time when she didn’t
Literally none of this was going to happen if not for the gift ceremony + proposal combo. People really, really downplay how stressy the timeframe of the movie was and treat it like this was how every day in Casita was like and while things were not perfect (lol) we saw it at its most extreme. It needed that catalyst for the plot to happen.
- pepa never hated bruno and y’all didn’t understand wdtab
Th wedding situation, for a while, was the FUNNIEST awkward family anecdote which was retold and reenacted every Christmas and on the wedding anniversary until Bruno went away. Then it was just painful. (Also it was all Felix's idea but that's again my headcanon)
- dolores never intended on ruining isabelas proposal she just heard a prophecy that everyone’s lives were gonna be ruined and was terrified
Justice for DOLORES goddamn this fandom is insane. Yes the proposal scene for me is the funniest in the movie but come on.
- mirabel has friends
And I need to develop them more, I've got this whole intricate circle of friends and enemies and acquaintances for the triplets; I need to come up with the kids of these people to interact with the grandkid.
- luisa is a grown woman who is capable of doing things for herself
And she's very level-headed and competent about it! Stilla nnoyed Jared didn't make her birthday May 1 (International Worker's Day), she'd have been an AMAZING Taurus.
- I think camilo was the most distant when bruno came back but after a while they became really close
They're itchy for a while but eventually game recognizes game.
- i don’t think pedro is given enough respect
LMAO a few days ago I tried making up a "Guzmans got the miracle' AU but it turned into a "Pedro Lives" AU and he just did a Mirabel speed-run of fixing the first generations' trauma in this essay I will-
I’m bored so here’s user jacarandaaaas hot takes rapid fire round
- I don’t think camilo is an asshole who’s heartless and I hate content that portrays him as such
- pepa is not a bad parent because of one 5 second scene where camilo comforts her
- julietas trauma is undermined a lot of the time and compared to her daughters
- comparing the characters trauma is weird
- i don’t think isabela is crazy violent post movie and would hate to be seen that way
- luisa is an introvert
- I don’t like the take that bruno avoided the kids pre movie I actually think he would spend more time with them than the adults
- I hate parentified mirabel. she’s 15 let her have fun she does not need to babysit people who are all older than her
- on another note yall undermine mirabel too much just because she has trauma but so does every other character. mirabel is not the only one who is traumatized and her trauma doesn’t make her any less capable than anyone else.
- isabela is smarter than she’s given credit for
- luisa is the most feminine out of the sisters but y’all discredit that because she has muscles even tho the movie has an entire song about how she wants to be seen as more than that.
- dolores can be fun
- camilo is watered down to being just “crazy” but y’all ignore how caring and considerate he is too just cause he’s a teenage boy
- let mirabel say fuck
- this one isn’t even a hot take anymore but none of the characters are perfect and that includes Bruno
- talking about bruno I hate when he’s shown to be completely incompetent at everything
- same with mirabel
- I think it takes a lot of time for isabela to fully embrace imperfection as we saw after wecid how fast she reverted back
- alma is not evil or villainous at all but people have a right to be upset at how she acted (the movie makes this a point she does say mean things) her actions are understandable not inexcusable
- going from one toxic dynamic to a different toxic dynamic doesn’t make it any less toxic (codependency)
- isabela and mirabels relationship is mutually strained
- luisa wasn’t a good sister just because she ignored mirabel instead of belittling her
- mirabel was just as ignorant as everyone else and I’m tired of y’all acting like she knew the whole time when she didn’t
- pepa never hated bruno and y’all didn’t understand wdtab
- LET MIRABEL BE FUN AND SILLY
- antonio wouldn’t abandon mirabel for his animals he already loved animals premovie anyways
- isabela is a huge softie and I hate how overlooked that aspect of her is
- luisa never hated isabela
- dolores never intended on ruining isabelas proposal she just heard a prophecy that everyone’s lives were gonna be ruined and was terrified
- mirabel has friends
- luisa is a grown woman who is capable of doing things for herself
- I think camilo was the most distant when bruno came back but after a while they became really close
- mirabel is brunos fav i mean come on she literally saved his life
- i don’t think pedro is given enough respect
uh yeah that’s all I have for now lmao

fight for you
Tumblr media
Inspired by the Book of Life. Part 1
masterlist !!
A letter had arrived to inform the Madrigals of your return. Camilo is overjoyed to reunite with you.
Camilo had kept his word. Even as eight years had passed, as Casita fell and rose back again on the hill that the two of you had once ran around on, the hope that you would return never once wavered.
Although he wanted to send you letters, he didn’t know where to write to you and your father hadn’t exactly warmed up to him even after your departure. Oftentimes he would run up to him, asking for any news from you. Though Ignacio would only regard him for a moment before silently walking away. He can’t say the same for his family though. The Madrigals and the lonely widow Ignacio Castillo had maintained a friendship of sorts. Though it seemed that Ignacio hadn’t really seen him as anything but the boy that drove his one and only daughter away from him. Often frowning and leaving the room whenever Camilo entered.
He knew his reputation wasn’t exactly the best but he had tried to show the older man his good side. Often he had pestered him, helping him out whenever he could. And try as Ignacio may, he couldn’t help but admire the boy whose smile was infectious and bright.
Camilo had spent years waiting, completely unaware that he was a boy falling deeper into the depths of love. No longer was it a silly crush and it took years of your absence to realize that.
He thought that he would have to wait longer. Not that he minded waiting but the day he had been waiting for would soon arrive.
A letter had been delivered to the matriarch of the family while they were having dinner. He recognized the seal that had your father’s initials on them as well as the wax seal’s colors. He drummed his fingers on the table, fidgeting as he resisted the urge to just snatch the letter from his grandmother’s hands.
He watched with bated breath, chewing on the arepa he ate like his life depended on it as his abuela’s serious features melted away to form a warm smile. She placed the letter back in its envelope before placing her hands on the table, glancing at him briefly.
“It seems that Señor Castillo’s daughter is expected to return from after completing her studies in the city.”
Camilo choked, an unchewed piece of arepa lodging itself in his throat.
Pepa, not noticing the choking Camilo had smiled fondly. “Oh, how sweet, you’re getting all choked up.” She stifles a soft motherly laugh, knowing how Camilo had admired and loved the girl.
Most people would argue that it was puppy love and that it would pass but her son’s unwavering patience to wait for (Name) told her all she needed to know. She was blissfully unaware that Camilo was so close to seeing the light, his abuelo Pedro on the other side—
Camilo grasped onto the table tightly, turning slightly purple as he couldn’t breathe. Was this it? Death by arepas? Granted it was a good way to go but he hadn’t seen (Name) yet!
“Oh..! Ay dios mio, you’re choking!” Panic ensued as Felix had turned to his son, about to share some fatherly wisdom, only to see Camilo choking. He immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver as Pepa thundered and rained all over the dinner table.
Well, after almost having a heart attack from Camilo’s near death experience, Alma had announced that she would like to host a welcoming party in honor of (Name’s) return. Seeing as the Madrigals and the Castillos were more than acquaintances after your departure, she saw it fit to hold a party for the return of one of Encanto’s memorable citizens.
As Camilo laid in his bed, he couldn’t help the smile that graced his lips. You were coming back. After all this time he was going to see you again.
Camilo wondered what you looked like now and as he stood up, he glanced at himself in the mirror. He combed his fingers through his brown curls, smiling at himself. He could say that he looked good. He only hoped that he wouldn’t disappoint.
The shapeshifter turned to his closet, opening it up to reveal dozens of ruanas that resembled the very same one you gave him. Said ruana was carefully tucked away. He had worn it only once and that was on the day of your departure. It had slipped off his shoulders a few times but Pepa reassured him that he would grow into it.
He went back to bed, holding the ruana close to his chest as he reminisced about his childhood with you, slowly falling asleep with a smile on his freckled face.
Soon came the day he had been waiting for. Casita was roaring with excitement, much to his sister Dolores’ chagrin. Everyone had wondered how you were after being away from Encanto. Rumors of your studies as well as your beauty buzzed around the town. Camilo had looked forward to meeting you once again, fidgeting as he kept on shifting to different people out of nervousness.
“Alright, alright, calm down. You got this.” his fingers drummed against his thighs as he tried to focus.
The welcome party had been attended by the whole town, all of its’ citizens as equally curious as he was to see or know what had happened to the little menace that once terrorized the whole town with Camilo.
“Óye, (Name’s) on her way.” Dolores whispered to her Abuela before she let out a little ‘hm’.
He stood beside his abuela, with your father on the opposite of the Madrigal matriarch. Camilo donned the exact same ruana you had given him the last time he saw you, his white button-up pressed smoothly and showed no creases. He swallowed thickly as he fidgeted with the ends of his ruana, careful as to not pick on it too much as he was afraid of ruining the gift that you had given him.
“Camilo, your girlfriend’s here!” Isabela had smirked after she had peered out on the walkway where you were escorted by a boy that looked to be of Camilo’s age, though they weren’t familiar with him. Perhaps he was an outsider that you met while studying in the city? He was tall, handsome, a mop of smooth umber locks on his head. The unknown boy’s pretty amber eyes gleamed as he smiled down at you. Camilo could feel his throat dry up and his heart clench. Who was he?
A hush fell over the crowd as you finally entered Casita’s newly built doors. All eyes on you as you made your way down the center of the parted crowd. Camilo could hear their whispers but his eyes had narrowed on the unfamiliar boy by your side. He didn’t like it. He didn’t like him. Maybe it was his overprotectiveness for his girl.. His friend showed but he was far too close for his liking. Though he tried to push the green monster that threatened to ruin his whole night. This is gonna be a night to remember. You don’t want to ruin it, Camilo hissed to himself.
As expected, everyone in town was curious to see how you had grown. Camilo had quickly turned his attention to you once he heard the soft gasps that came from the crowd.
“(Name) Castillo has returned..”
A delicate fan had hid your features from curious eyes that tried to take a glimpse of you. You were dressed in a white blouse, delicate frills on the neck with a light yellow lace trimming, your skirt was long, embroidered with pretty carnations and sugar flowers and it stopped just before your ankles. On your hair was a little bow in the color of Camilo’s ruana.
“And she’ll be helping out with the children..” One of the mothers that Camilo had been helping had gushed as you gently ruffled the curly hair of the little tyke in her arms.
“I heard she reads books.. like for fun.” One of the haughty girls your age had scoffed, rolling their eyes while her companion had gasped. “No way..”
You continued to make your way through the crowd, a space between Alma and Camilo being made for you. The boy he had been glaring at joined your father’s side. Although he was nervous, Camilo had tried his best to retain his confident smile while your father had looked on proudly. “Mija.” Your father greets you with a warm hug and you couldn’t help but return the embrace before you had pulled away to stand in between the shapeshifter and his grandmother.
“Señorita Castillo.” Camilo breathes out, unable to believe that you were actually here now. You were so close and he could feel your warmth. He could only see your eyes right now, mesmerized and getting lost in them.
He briefly wondered if you even remembered who he was. It had been years after all and no letters were exchanged to know what had happened to the both of you in each other’s absence. Anxiety filled him and he felt his palms get sweaty. Though that soon would be melted away as you turned to him with that sweet smile you always gave him when you were younger.
You lowered your fan, eyelashes fluttering prettily as you beamed up at him. “Hola, Camilo.” You greet with a soft smile, only then making your features visible to everyone in town.
Camilo Madrigal swore he could hear a chorus of angels singing as his eyes opened wide to take in all of you. His jaw dropped and he started shifting again, his familiar disfigured face staring at you in disbelief.
A soft giggle merely escaped your lips, far too familiar with Camilo’s antics to be surprised anymore. “It’s really nice to see you..” You lean close as you whisper, smiling sheepishly, cheeks heating up as you recognize the ruana he wore. "You kept it? After all these years?"
Camilo’s own cheeks felt warm as he didn’t even know where to look. Your pretty eyes or the lips he swore he could kiss forever. And he could only nod dumbly as you smiled.
However, your attention was soon captured by his grandmother who had smiled fondly, gently grabbing your shoulders as she made a welcome speech that Camilo didn’t really listen to. Something about returning, yada.. Yada.. enough about his abuela!
All he could focus on was you.
Aside from his grandmother’s speech he would briefly hear muffled snippets of conversations of both your father and said boy who he now knew as one of your friends from the capital. He heard how he had insisted on escorting you home. He had shook your father’s hand firmly, proudly smiling as he heard Ignacio’s praise of making sure his daughter had come home safely. And to that he says, really? He spent years trying to gain even a smile from the ever cold Ignacio Castillo but it was given away so freely to a stranger?
As Alma’s speech ended, she asked for the band to play some music, no doubt sparking what would be a very lively party. Although Camilo wanted nothing more but to speak with you, you were whisked away by his primas who had fawned over your outfit as well as your now grown features. They had also filled you in on what you had missed during the eight years you’ve studied in the city.
You talked animatedly, recalling all your time in the city. He would watch, mesmerized by how you had become so.. so beautiful. Though there were quirks you had retained that he remembered when you were children. He smiled to himself, sighing dreamily.
“Camilo Madrigal. The shapeshifter, right?” A voice interrupted him from his thoughts and he turned to see the very same boy that was by your side upon entering Casita. “Andres Del Pilar.” The boy held his hand out. “I’ve heard a lot about you from princesa. It is nice to finally meet you.” Andres greets with a smile that didnt quite reach his eyes.
Something about this boy had honestly riled Camilo up. He was so.. Smug. Like he was smug too but his smugness, by his defense, was endearing! Not like this.. This.. chico engreido! He could feel Andres size him up, likely to scope out the competition as Camilo shook his hand.
“All good things, I hope.” He says through gritted teeth, eyes narrowing at the nickname the boy had referred to you as.
“But of course, mi princesa speaks highly of her darling friend.” Camilo could practically hear the emphasis on Andres’ words. His princess. Not yours. He turned to gaze at you just like Camilo had. The tall boy hummed softly. “During her years in the city, I’ve been granted her gracious presence. I admire her, you see. Only a blind man wouldn’t.” Andres had shook his head. “Numerous times I have thought of asking for her hand to court..” Camilo could feel his heart stop at his words, eyes wide as he looked at Andres.
“But I intend to ask for it from her father, Señor Castillo himself.” Camilo’s blood ran cold and he swore he feel himself freeze up, nails digging in his palms at how tight he was clenching his fists.
The tall boy merely gave him a once over, huffing haughtily. “Judging by your reaction it seems she has failed to inform me that this darling friend.. Doesn’t see her as just that.” He shook his head. “Though I really don’t see someone like you as a competition. No shapeshifting could amount to the life and the riches I could give her.”
Andres turned to walk away, bumping his shoulder against Camilo harshly and watching with a snicker as the shapeshifter had stumbled back. “Just a friendly advice, from one amigo to another, si? It is best if you cease any feelings you have for her, friend.” Andres had masked the poison in his words with his flowery sentences.
Camilo’s jaw clenched and he swore if he didn’t have the patience of a saint he would’ve seen red. Andres had expected an easy win. An easy ‘I yield’ from the Camilo boy. What he didn’t expect was dark green eyes narrowing at him.
“Que gane el mejor, amigo. May the best man win.” Camilo stood tall as he sauntered past Andres. If Andres thought he was going to back down, he had another thing coming. Camilo Madrigal was going to fight for you.
Nearby, hidden by a large assortment of plants, one could hear a little ‘oooh’ as they bore witness to the scene that had just transpired. Dolores, Mirabel, and their Tio Bruno had been listening in. After making sure that both boys had left the scene, Dolores let out a little ‘hm’ before relaying what had just happened as Bruno who had been quite inspired by the display, had taken notes, invested in his sobrino’s story and inspired to make a telenovela with starring his rats. Mirabel recalled the exchange from both boys to be used as the dialogue.
“Write that down! Write that down! That was telenovela gold!”

Teen!Bruno Madrigal x Foreign Fem!Reader 「Chapter 1」
Tumblr media
This is probably gonna be a short fic instead of a one-shot, I wanted to start it on their teenage years, but will probably make the rest of the story pass by after the birth of Luisa, Isabela and Dolores!
Read it on AO3
Next!
°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°
Bruno Madrigal. You've heard this name so many times since you and your family moved to Encanto, it wass as if the guy was the only talk on the village. Be it via hushed whispers, disapproving gossip or even revolted screams, everyone always had something to say about him.
Being knew in the village meant you hadn't met the Madrigals yet, curious about their powers and what they would look like! The only one you've seen so far was Señora Alma, the lady being kind enough to introduce you to a few of your neighbours.
Now, a week has passed and you still haven't had the time to meet many people, more focused in helping your parents get habituated.
"That Madrigal boy is a magnet of bad luck! You and your family better stay away from him!" your neighbour commented one day, as you were helping your mom hang some clothes to dry outside. "Came to my son one day telling him he was gonna be in pain, and wouldn't you know? The very next day he broke his arm!"
Your mom hummed along, not really paying much attention to the older woman. She seemed to have taken a liking to you, already joking about how you and her son were the same age, nudging you into talking to him as much as you could.
"But why would it be his fault?" you asked, confused. "Did he break his arm or something?"
"He wouldn't dare, he's skinny as a stick, that one! It was his bad luck! If he had kept quiet it wouldn't have happened!" she seemed enraged about it. "Alma needs to do something about that boy, or else he'll keep spreading his curses around!"
The conversation didn't seem to be going anywhere, so you decided to tune it out, the older woman ranting about the boy to your mom, while you hummed to yourself. Finishing your task quickly, you blew your mom a kiss, waving to your neighbour and deciding to finally check out the village properly.
Crossing the bridge that connected one half of the village to the other, you heard the soft clicks of tiles tapping against each other, following the sound for a bit, stopping in front of Casa Madrigal, smiling softly at the sweet aroma of passion fruit in the air.
"Hii! You're new here, right? Mamá told us about you!" a red haired girl happily skipped next to you, colours lightly shifting around her as she spoke. "I'm Pepa Madrigal! But you can call me just Pepa!"
"Hi, Pepa!" you waved at her, introducing yourself. "It's nice to finally meet one of the famous Madrigals! Your family is pretty popular, huh?"
She laughed, linking yor arm with hers as she talked about her gift and how it usually got people's attention, walking towards the house and guiding you to the kitchen, where a brunette girl sat, munching on a piece of cake.
"Julieta! Look who I found right in front of our house! It's the new girl!" gesturing for you to sit down, Pepa took her place next to her sister, still happily chatting as she served you a piece of cake. "I was telling her about our gifts!"
"Ai ai, Pepita! Mamá told you not to go running your mouth already..." the girl said, jokingly, turning to you. "She's not overwhelming you, is she? She does that sometimes."
"No, no! I have no problem listening to you guys, really!" you waved your hands in front of your body, gesturing for Pepa to continue her story as you finished your piece of cake.
After a while, you noticed the sun starting to settle down, getting up and quickly thanking the girls for the chat, telling them you had to be home soon. They waved you goodbye, inviting you to come over any time, happy to have made a new friend.
°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°•☆•°
As the days passed, you got closer to Pepa, accompanying her on her errands, talking about yout life before going to Encanto and laughing at her stories about her family, they were always very nice to you, but you still hadn't met the infamous Bruno, being told that he was either in his room or already left the house every time you came over.
On the other hand, it seemed like the villagers had even more to say about him than before, and it was starting to get in your nerves. Pepa and Julieta told you very few things about Bruno, but they were all positive, and you didn't get the hatred the people of Encanto had towards him.
You knew it made his sisters sad, hearing them complain about how it wasn't Bruno's fault what he saw on his visions, and they were your only friends there, so it was starting to get you down too. After passively listening to another of your neighbour's rants once more, you decided to go for a walk so you could cool off.
Her son didn't get the hint, apparently, rushing to your side as you walked towards the village's market, waving the cast on his arm, his mom too prideful and irritated to let Julieta take care of it.
"You've been awfully close to the Madrigal's lately, huh?" he started. "Did you get the weirdo to see your future already?"
"I'm sorry, who?" you cocked an eyebrow, turnining to look at him with an irritated look.
"You know, Bruno!" he reminded you, indignantly. "The one who broke my arm!"
"You broke your own arm out of sheer stupidity, Nicolas, Bruno was just trying to warn you." turning to one of the food stands, you looked at what they had for sale, still annoyed at the guy next to you, gesturing to his cast with your head. "And then you keep the pityful look, even after Julieta offered multiple times to help you out with that."
Nicolas let out an indignant huff, opening his mouth to complain once more, before looking behind you with a slightly frightened expression, and quietly gesturing for you to leave. You cocked your head, turning around to see a boy around your age, his skinny frame towering over you, a large green poncho almost engulfing him. He looked like he wanted to tell you something, but before he could even start, you were already warning him.
"Sí?" you locked your eyes on his, still annoyed. "I swear, if you heard me and are gonna try and tell me another puta historia about Bruno, I will not hold myself from doing something I might regret later."
"Well, I'll try not to be too egocentric." the guy in front of you gave you a short smile, before extending his hand for you to shake. "Bruno Madrigal, nice to meet you."

Gluing the broken glass
(Todos vienen a celebrar)
As Mirabel finally finished with her part, she took off her apron, tying it around the wooden chair before she walked out of the kitchen, exactly at the time when her baby cousin was getting downstairs with a nervous smile. Tia Pepa rubbed his shirt gently. Camilo paced next to Mirabel, slightly hitting her with his shoulder by accident. Inigo jumped after him quickly. He presumably was Camilo's closest animal, but it would probably be expected that a monkey would be as much of an elf as Camilo was himself.
Mira passed over them, for a moment her eyes were locked at how Camilo pat his brother's head, ruffling his black fluffy hair while his monkey wrapped his tail around the birthday boy before she looked away, passing into the front yard where the celebration was in full bloom already. Mama and Dolores stood outside, welcoming the guests that flooded the house. Mirabel could see how Julieta was shifting to honor every villager who had come while her older cousin gave beautiful bouquets of flowers to everyone. Isabela and Luisa had been standing at the front doors, the first one with her usual notebook, marking everyone who had come while Luisa was listening to people, sometimes correcting the older girl when she had forgotten someone.
"What are you doing?" Isabela muttered, looking up from the notes to Mirabel.
The youngest sister rolled her eyes in annoyance. "I'm done already." She knew that she probably could make just one more set of arepas,  but was it that bad that she wanted to see everyone?
"Dios Mio, please..." Luisa breathed out, throwing her head back and rubbing her skirt slightly. Mirabel glanced at the sewn-in ribbons of various shades that had symbolized the volume.
Isabela just huffed. "Okay," she had scribbled something on paper and Mirabel looked at the notebook. It turned out that her name was crossed out now, meaning that she was free. She just rushed inside, happy that she could finally have some fun.
Animals were jumping all over the place, entertaining the townspeople. A jaguar ran nearby with a bunch of children on its back almost knocking Mirabel off, but she jumped away at the last moment. Her green glasses slipped off slightly from this. She turned around to her papa and Tío Felix, who had played some music.
"Colombia, te quiero tanto!" Tío Felix discanted in his bass voice.
"Que siempre me enamora tu encanto."Mirabel continued and Agústin stopped for a moment to wave his hand before getting back to the piano.
Somebody squeezed Mirabel's arm quietly making her look down. She chuckled a little as she saw her primito, all smartened up, in his white ceremonial costume.
"Ah, Tonito, are you ready for the big day?"
The little boy nodded with delight, looking at Mirabel with happy sparkles in his eyes. "What do you think my gift would be?"
She smiled, kneeling a little. "I'm not a wisewoman." She slightly pinned his plump with baby fat cheek. "Either way, it's going to be cooler than anything!" She had embraced her cousin tightly, before tossing him up into the air. Antonio laughed cheerfully, while Mirabel held back her groan of pain. Yes, Antonio might be small, but he was a big boy already.
Luisa scurried next to them, then stopped for a moment. "The ceremony is about to start." She looked at Mirabel, who squeezed her baby primo for the last time before following her sister. With her side-eye, Mirabel saw the hot side of the family gathering around the youngest Madrigal family member.
"Fifty years ago this candle blessed us with a miracle given to our family." The Patio was silent, except for Abuela's voice. The air was filled with anticipation, the cold night air lay upon everyone and even Camilo's animals were quiet.
As her grandmother continued, Mirabel leaned on Luisa who had wrapped her right hand around Mirabel, the other hand had been put on their mom's shoulder. Julieta held hands with Camilo, somehow similar to how Isabela and Dolores did. Agustin armed the two oldest girls. Tío Bruno, as Mirabel actually expected, wasn't here. Everyone was listening closely. This speech wasn't any different from what Mirabel had heard at her ceremony, but this whole pomp made her heart flutter in awe.
Finally, the fanfare had lightened up the long corridor, focusing on the main focus of the evening. Antonio if to be clear. Casita flipped the tiles, creating the Red carpet right to the door. The patio burst into applause as everyone turned to Antonio. Unsurely, he had made the first step. Mirabel squinted a little and her face broke into a smile of tenderness as she realized that he had an orange flower crown on his head. There was no doubt that it was created by Dolores earlier.
Every step felt like it was taking forever, Morabel almost relieved her own ceremony at this moment. She remembered it like it was yesterday, this worry if she would make Abuela proud with her gift... Oh, she really hoped she did. Mirabel tightened her grip on Luisa's arm.
Finally, after what felt like forever, Antonio stood right in front of the magic candle. Abuela leaned over slightly, looking right into  his brown eyes. "Do you promise to work for the better of Encanto?"
Antonio's black curls trembled as he moved his head down and up before his tiny dark-skinned palms reached forward the candle and started to warm up against its wax. Mirabel adjusted her glasses, not because they had slipped off, but from all the worry in her soul. Finally, Antonio took a deep breath and reached for a doorknob. A bright light irrupted all over Casita if not the whole Encanto. Such a bright color that Mirabel seriously thought that she had gotten blind. A strong wind blew, Mirabel's legs bulked slightly from a sudden force of nature.
Mira blinked a couple of times to shove the brightness in her eyes off. For a moment, she saw Antonio, surrounded by a sand cupole, before it fell down, ruining the complete tidyness of the floor. Abuela stared at the mess, probably wondering what was going on. Mirabel squinted and realized that her primo held some sort of a dark brown tablet. He looked down at it, twitling it in his hands.
"Is that... me?" He asked nervously, examining the plate. Abuela leaned to him, looking at the object in his arm. A second later Antonio's door brightened and a carved image appeared on his door. Abuela's face brightened as she took a tablet from Antonio's arms and showed it to everyone. Mirabel raised her head, looking carefully, before realizing that there was an image of Antonio's door with Abuela and Antonio in front of it. Positions are exactly how they were a few moments ago.
"...seeing the future" Mirabel realized briefly.
"We have a new gift!"
A moment later, Casita was filled with clapping, the sound of exploding fireworks drowned it down a bit. For a split second, Luisa clutched Mirabel's arm tighter, before letting go of it and covering her ears abruptly, her face doubled up from the racket. Even Mirabel herself had to admit that it was pretty loud.
The next time she would make a Bandeja Paisa for Luisa to make it up for all the uproar.

For @maleficent09, based on the prompt: “how the villagers see or don’t see how wrong they were about Bruno.”
Hope you enjoy!
Comments are always appreciated.
~~~~~~
Ajustamiento
An adjustment.
That’s what Mama had said this would be. For both him leaving the walls for the first time in ten years. And for everyone else, who hadn’t seen him in ten years.
It was an adjustment for a lot of the Madrigals too. Some struggled - Luisa had to be keenly watched over, so she wasn’t overworking herself, and Pepa would instinctively keep a locked gate over her emotions. And some found it came easily - Isabela is impressively quick at dropping that perfection, happily wrestling in the mud with her younger cousins and demanding her Abuela join in, and Dolores takes the transition of enhanced to normal back to enhanced hearing in her stride. He’s even caught her singing to herself.
It was a careful balance for him. Bruno didn’t want to fall back into the whole golden child adoration he had before his reputation crumbled away, nor did he want to remain the mysterious Madrigal that nobody talks about. Though the latter was a good premise for a play or something.
Well, at least he thought that. Turns out there was no careful balance.
Most of the older townspeople came around within seconds. They remembered him from before and knew better than the twisted gossip of recent years.
The village kids too. They were an excitable lot, brimming with questions, clearly influenced by their babysitter/friend/playmate, Camilo.
All that was left is that awkward group in the middle. Young adults. Most people in their early twenties to late thirties, still walk very apprehensively around him. They think he can’t hear them whispering too.
There’s a tug on his ruana.
He looks down to see he’s surrounded by three little boys. One of which is clutching to green fabric.
“Are you Bruno Madrigal?” The boy asks, who yanked at his ruana.
“Can you really see the future?” Pipes up another.
“Can you tell us our futures?” Questions the last.
Bruno chuckles fondly. A part of him has missed this. He remembers the days when a young Isabela, Dolores and Luisa would hound him for visions in a very similar fashion.
“Yep. I’m Bruno and I can see the future.”
The children look at him in awe.
Would it be wrong to say he feels like a celebrity?
“Who wants a vision?”
The way all their hands instantly shoot up reminds him of doing this at school. Most of the kids would come running for the solutions to homework or tests to to find out if their crush liked them back. And he remembers Mama telling him off when she found out he was charging his classmates for them.
The kids introduce themselves as Diego, Juanito and Samuel Perez. The name is familiar, Bruno went to school with their parents. The boys are cousins. And are babysat by Camilo - though that was obvious already.
He leads them away to an open space.
It’s just outside the Perez house, which is getting an extension, built by Luisa. Bruno tries to wave at his niece as he passes but the kids have a very firm grip on his arm.
Seriously, these kids could easily rival young Isabela for how enthusiastic they are.
He doesn’t mind them helping out with pouring sand into a circle, but he doesn’t want to redo an angry Abuela getting involved because a flowery braid got singed while burning leaves.
“I bet I become the richest guy in the world,” Samuel says.
“I don’t care about money. Adults say money doesn’t make you happy. I want to become a farmer, like my Papas.” Juanito announces, proudly.
“I want to marry Sophia.” Diego pipes up.
“You said you liked Carolina?”
“I can like many things.”
“Who wants to go first?” Bruno cuts in.
It’s a silly question because obviously they all want to go first. And they start arguing about it.
In the end, Diego goes first. He was the eldest apparently. He would be followed by Samuel, then lastly Juanito.
“You ready, kid?” Bruno questions, holding out his hands.
He takes them instantly. “Born ready.” Diego answers.
They sit in anticipation under green light. The other two are sat off to the side, watching in hushed excitement.
Now that he’s actually doing the vision, he’s starting to consider what happens if the future isn’t good. He’s internally watching a repeat of young Dolores crying to Pepa and Félix, saying that she is never going to be loved and will be lonely forever - that wasn’t the vision, but the future can be difficult for some adults to grasp, never mind children.
He didn’t want to do that again, so he stopped doing visions for children after that. Much to the annoyance of young Luisa.
Since the magic returned, he’s been doing visions for anyone that shows interest.
Still not many of them have actually been kids under ten. With the exception of Antonio, due to personal biases.
The reputation that was created for him in those absent ten years are probably to blame. Parents have convinced their children or anyone that will listen that his gift is taboo.
Take Osvaldo Ortiz, for example.
The Ortiz family had been close with the Madrigals. Osvaldo’s father had been friends with Alma since birth and then worked with her in Encanto. So, his son was the best suitor for one of Alma’s girls. Until, of course, Julieta fell madly in love with Agustín.
Osvaldo hadn’t taken it well, to say the least. Bruno had only tried to advise him, it could hardly be called a vision, more than a warning.
Soon enough, Bruno found himself being accused for Osvaldo growing a gut.
He can’t help but think Osvaldo’s unhappiness is somewhat deserved though. He’s seen the way Osvaldo treats Agustín and the way he still tries flirting with Julieta. Isabela complains of the way he looks at her sister.
“What do you think you’re doing?!”
Bruno blinks, and the vision stops.
Oh. He hasn’t been paying attention to what he was actually doing.
However, there’s no vision slate in his hand, so hopefully nothing bad has actually happened.
A familiar woman suddenly appears in his field of vision, holding Diego by the hand. The other two boys are peeking out from behind her brown skirt. She looks down at him, glaring. The children must’ve done something.
Camilo tends to encourage mischievousness in the kids he babysits and that often leads to trouble. It’s no surprise adults are displeased.
“Ah, Xiomara Perez! To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Don’t give me that, Bruno! How dare you try to use your magic on my son! And my nephews!” She screeched.
Yep. That makes more sense.
“They asked for a vision. I’m just doing my job.” Bruno shrugged.
“Liar! My Diego would never have asked. Your visions always lead to trouble!” Xiomara continued. “These are innocent kids, they have never done anything wrong, and don’t deserve getting awful fates!”
“What’s going on here?” Luisa asks, stepping over at the sound of commotion.
Xiomara points an accusing finger at the young woman. “You! How dare you just let this happen! You should have intervened. You are meant to be the protector of Encanto. Why wouldn’t you help these poor children?”
“I didn’t see anything wrong. Bruno gave these boys a vision because they asked,” she said. She glanced at the three boys in question. Bruno can see the exact moment something snaps in her. She stands, intimidating, at her full height, with muscles tense and eyes narrowed. “Poor children? Let me tell you, Señora Perez, these poor children need no help from my Tío screwing up their futures.”
“How dare you—”
“These three cut open Mirabel’s hand in some sick prank, and nobody has punished them for it. If they weren’t children, I’d kick them over the mountain for what they’ve done.”
It makes Xiomara shut up for a second.
Bruno is just gaping. He knew Mirabel had injured her hand, but he didn’t realise that was the work of three kids.
Xiomara has enough sense not to push Luisa’s protective older sister buttons. Though she quietly mutters, just loud enough for Bruno to hear, something about his youngest niece deserving that and much worse.
However, not enough sense to keep her mouth closed as she redirects the argument to Bruno.
“Looks like you bring out the worst in your own family, Bruno,” Xiomara said. “Can’t imagine why on God’s earth they welcomed you back into their lives - forcing us to put up with you and your curses as well. You should be ashamed of yourself and everything you’ve done to this town, and should’ve stayed in exile when you had the chance.”
“How dare you?”
“What—”
“Bruno is one of the friendliest and most inspiring adults I know, who has helped me grow in more ways than one. Which is more than I can say for these kids,” Luisa hissed, standing over the woman. “I can guarantee that if he was a parent he’d be doing a much better job than you - though I’ve seen mosquitos do better than you. Bruno only sees the future, he can’t change it. The only one who can do that is yourself. So if you have an issue with your vision, take a look in a mirror. And if you have a problem with him then you can get the hell out of our town.”
The woman stared up at Luisa with a beet-red face, completely speechless.
“Now, Señora Perez. Would you like some instructions on how to finish a roof or a recommendation for another builder? Because I and the rest of the Madrigals certainly won’t be doing anything else for you.”
The question was enough to make the woman give a huff and storm away with the boys, watching in varying levels of fear, shock and confusion.
The walk back to Casita was quiet.
Neither said a word.
Bruno was grateful for Luisa’s defence, even if she did take it a little too far. It reminds of when Pepa would do so when they were teenagers. He also knew well enough that there was plenty of others who had similar views to Xiomara, and no doubt Luisa did too. Simply yelling at one wouldn’t change the majority’s beliefs about him.
Luisa, on the other hand, knew she hadn’t kept control of her temper and would definitely find herself grounded for not doing work. Which was weird because she was usually grounded for doing too much work.
As much as she wanted to undo the renovation she had made to the Perez household, she knew it was better to stay with her Tío. Not only was it the right thing to do, but he looked like he needed and wanted her company right now. So she stayed put.
Even once they had reached Casita and had dinner with the others.
Bruno was about to excuse himself when Luisa pulled him back into his chair. He raised an eyebrow at her, but didn’t move.
“We… we usually have a game night on Fridays,” Luisa explained, nodding her head towards Isabela, Camilo and Antonio already arguing about who had the most wins. While Dolores was urging Mariano to go home before it got worse. “You’re welcome to join us, Tío. If you’d want, we won’t force you.”
Bruno blinked. Then tearing up a little, “I’d like that.”
Almost instantly, the chaotic trio stopped arguing and jumped into action. Isabela grabbed a stack of board games and a few packs of cards, sorting through them on the floor. Camilo bounced upstairs to find as many blankets and pillows as he could find. Antonio gathered his animal friends as cuddle companions, in case anyone wanted them. Dolores and Mariano opted to get some snacks and drinks from the kitchen.
Soon enough, the group were huddled together under a pillow fort, playing a game of Charades. Some of Bruno’s rats insisted they have a go.
That’s how, at three on a Saturday morning, they found themselves laughing and squabbling over Cluedo in a slight mess of sugar and pillows.
Readjusting to life could be exhausting for Bruno, but that didn’t mean it was without its good moments.
Family bonding was one of the things Bruno had missed the most during his ten year absence. Even the simplest things of playing games and accusing his nieces of blatant cheating was enough to bring a wide smile to his face.
Said good moments made it - dealing with people like Xiomara - all worth it.
“Oh, Doloressss? Have you ever felt Mariano’s biceps before?”
The poor woman spat out her drink across the kitchen table. The sound of sizzling breakfast covered up the noise of Dolores being extremely flustered and mad. Mariano was, thankfully, making breakfast and not hearing what Camilo had said.
“SHUT UP, CAMILO!” She whisper yelled, not wanting to keep her voice up. The young boy cackled at himself, falling back into his chair.
It was a beautiful Sunday morning. Everybody else in the family had gone out on town, doing their thing and helping about. Currently the young boy was tormenting his older sister. As usual.
“What? You guys are dating, yeah?” He smirked, raising an eyebrow.
Dolores couldn’t take it anymore. She was furious! What he was doing was an everyday occurrence. Especially when Isabella was on the occasion. Oh, how they wished that his mischief could end.
A door creaked open nearby, and a young girl burst through the door. A bright smile displaying her face.
“Good morning, Madrigals!“
It didn’t matter how many members were there at a time, you always had a funny knack of calling them that. Camilo perked up to your voice.
“Morning, (Y/N). You look especially happy today.”
You giggled at his comment. “It’s just nice to see you guys, that’s all. Nothing special happening today.”
For everyone else but you, the evident blush on Camilo's face meant more than just him being hot. If his crush was obvious to everyone else, why not to you?
And then- it clicked.
Dolores knew what she had to do.
Tumblr media
It was just a casual stroll around town. At least, that’s what Camilo and you thought. Dolores had an evil grin on her face without even showing it. She looked over at both of you.
“So, Camilo, wouldn’t you say it’s such a beautiful day outside?”
He raised an eyebrow to her question. “Uh, yeah. I guess so.”
Dolores turned her attention to you. “Yknow (Y/N), Camilo finds a lot more beautiful things. Kinda like… oh, I don’t know- you!”
The young boy's eyes widened, as a vast blush spread across his freckles. You smiled innocently.
“Aww, that’s so nice of you, Camilo!”
He scoffed and awkwardly scratched the back of his neck. Trying to hide his completely red face. You giggled, while Dolores did a little happy dance. Her plan is becoming successful.
Isabella turned the corner, gracefully swooping in from seemingly nowhere. As on cue.
“Oh! I didn’t expect to see you guys here.” Isabella noticed, acting all surprised. “I was just going on a small walk. (Y/N), your hair looks so bland. Honey, would you like some flowers?”
You gasped, nodding enthusiastically. Isabella formed a beautiful flower crown with your favourite colours. It smelled so nice!
In Camilo’s mind, he knew something was off…
“Smells so lovely. A beauty with a soft and delicate heart. Just like how Camilo would describe you often!”
Oh-ho-ho, he was PISSED pissed now. You could almost see the fumes coming out of his ears, as he tried to shut Isabella’s mouth. And yet, you again were oblivious to what these girls were saying.
Finally the walk ends at the church. Much to the dragged Camilo’s demise. Dolores spoke up.
“The church is really special, isn’t it, (Y/N)?”
You smiled. “Yeah! So many happy moments have happened here.”
Camilo immediately started to know what was going on. Quickly, he tried to stop the words coming out of his sisters mouth.
“Yknow (Y/N)! You could — also — form memories here — with Camilo — once he proposes!”
She blurted out, while Camilo kept repeatedly try to cover her mouth every time. Isabella shooed him off of her with her flowers.
“Huh?” You said. “I uh… don’t understand.” You explained in a confused tone.
He sighed and quickly grabbed your hand, walking you away from the mess that’s happened today. “C’mon, let’s just get you home. And away from thOSE JERKS!!”
The sound of Isabella and Dolores laughing their asses off slowly faded out in the back. You got to the porch of your home, ready to wave Camilo goodbye for the day. Trying to puzzle everything together and what they were trying to say.
“Camilo, I still don’t understand what happened today. Were they teasing you about something?” You mindlessly asked, making Camilo smile and sigh.
“Yes, (Y/N). But don’t go too much into it. Maybe in time it’ll be brought up again…”
He slowly started to walk away, leaving you a very confused person. Now wanting answers to your questions.
Oh well. At least Dolores and Isabella had fun today.
