Thinking about AA role-swap AUs and if prosecutor Phoenix Wright would also “choose death” and then I remembered that in Farewell My Turnabout, Phoenix tells Edgeworth it might be time for "Defense Attorney Phoenix Wright chooses death". In the bad ending where Matt Engarde is declared "not guilty", Phoenix literally wanders the streets. Before I played this case, I thought Maya dies in the bad ending which prompts this reaction, but no he doesn't even see Maya again.
The more I look at canon, the more I realize Phoenix is as much of an emotional mess as Miles is, likely even worse. Phoenix's identity has always been so tied to being a lawyer, to saving people. He condemns one innocent person (Adrian Andrews) and he completely falls apart. And honestly, the same would probably happen if he got Matt Engarde "guilty" and Maya dies. Of course prosecutor Phoenix Wright would leave like Miles did.

whoops my hand slipped and I banged out 1800 words of fix-it fic in like an hour. btw i think the Abby connection is dumb but I'm making it work.
Three years after reconciling with Buck, newly engaged to him, Tommy gets a phone call from a certain former dispatcher...who's just seen some interesting news via a Facebook Relationship Status post.
*****
(also on AO3)
To say that the phone call blindsided him would have been the understatement of the century.
He was just sitting at home watching the game, having a beer, minding his own business. Evan was on shift — must be a busy one, he’d only gotten two text messages all evening, one bitching about not having had time to eat dinner and the other about idiots who texted while driving.
His phone rang. Unknown number. Normally he wouldn’t have picked up, but with all the wedding preparations, a lot of vendors were calling. It was a little late to be making business calls, just after 8 pm, but he’d quickly learned that business norms meant little in the wedding planning business. “Hello?”
“Tommy?”
“Yes?” A woman’s voice. Familiar, but he couldn’t place it.
Pause “You’re marrying Buck??” A slightly hysterical note of disbelief entered the woman’s voice as she said the name.
And all at once, he knew who it was. Shit fuck motherfucker why didn’t we get ahead of this one.
“Abby. Um…”
“Evan Buckley? My ex-fiancé and my ex-boyfriend are marrying each other?”
“Small world, huh?” he said, going for levity.
“Buck’s not even gay!”
“No, he’s not. He’s bisexual.”
“I’m…okay. I’m sorry, it’s just…this is a lot of information to get all at once.”
“How did you even find out? Don’t you live in Phoenix?”
“Buck posted one of those relationship status things on Facebook.”
“Oh. I barely use Facebook.”
“Me either, but Buck does, and I hadn’t been on there in awhile, but I logged on and that was like the third post I saw!”
Tommy remembered the day Buck had made the post. They hadn’t really put their relationship on social media much - Buck posted photos of them on Instagram sometimes - and he hadn’t done one of those stupid relationship status things for them until they got engaged. They’d trawled their phones for the right pic, eventually settling on one taken at a 118 barbecue of them together, smiling, arms slung around waists. He hadn’t said so, but he’d gotten a little emotional over what Evan wrote on the post:
Evan Buckley is engaged to Tommy Kinard.
“It’s been a long road, but we made it. Can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with this man. He’s the best person I’ve ever known. I love you!”
“Well…I’m sorry that was an unpleasant surprise for you,” Tommy said, carefully.
She sighed. “I don’t know that it was…unpleasant. But a surprise, for sure. How do you even know Buck? How did you meet?”
“We’re both firefighters, it’s not that surprising that we could have met, is it?”
“No, I guess not.”
“And he was at my old firehouse. The one you refused to ever come to. But I guess you went when you were with him, didn’t you?”
“You never wanted me to meet your friends. I guess I found out why when you broke off our engagement.”
“I’m sorry, Abby. I know I said it then, but I’ll say it again now. I lied to myself, I lied to a lot of people. It took me almost trapping you in my lie, when you did not deserve that, to break me out of it.”
“I forgave you ages ago. We don’t have to go over all that again.”
“I met Evan…I guess it’s four years ago? We started dating not long after. I, um…was the first man he dated. I guess I made him realize some things about himself.”
“Just transforming lives everywhere you go, huh?” she said, a teasing note entering her voice. Tommy was happy to hear it.
“Yeah, well, I almost screwed it up. I broke up with him six months later. He was diving in headfirst, too fast, just all in and wanting to move in with me.”
“That sounds just like Buck.”
“I panicked and ended it before I could get in any deeper with him.”
“It was too late, wasn’t it?”
“Yeah. I was already in love with him.”
“He’s easy to love. Too easy,” she said, quietly. “But you got back together, obviously.”
“Took a little while. Almost a year. I dated a few guys, he dated a few people, but nothing stuck for either of us - I know now it’s because we were still hung up on each other. We have a friend in common and we’d hear about each other through him…but I didn’t really see him until we ended up on a major incident call together. I sustained a minor injury - just a scrape, really - and Hen from his house patched me up. I was sitting there on the ambulance deck, more or less left to myself, and he came waltzing up with that eyebrow raised like he knew all my secrets.” Abby chuckled, like she knew the exact expression he was describing. “He just said, are you done being fucking stupid yet?”
“And you were.”
“Yep. I was. He took me home that night and we’ve barely been apart since. Got engaged a year later.”
“You sound happy.”
“I am. I’m ecstatic. I can’t believe I got a second chance with him. I kicked myself for ending it like that, I don’t know what came over me.”
“I do. You thought you weren’t enough for him to want to keep you.”
He nodded. “Yeah.”
“That’s dumb.”
“That’s what he says.”
They sat there not speaking for what felt like a long time.
“Well…” Abby said. “I feel like I just unloaded on you out of the blue.”
“You kinda did,” he said, smiling.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have called.”
“I’m glad you did. You know…Evan and I didn’t realize we had you in common until our six month anniversary dinner. In fact, it was that revelation that sort of started us on the way to breaking up for awhile. But that’s been so long now and it hasn’t come up in a few years. I almost forgot about it.”
“Gee, thanks,” she said, her grin audible. “I’m glad you’re both happy. I have a lot of regret over Buck, how I left things with him. I assume he’s told you.”
“He has. If it helps, he doesn’t have any bad feelings towards you.”
“It does help. Thank you for that.” She sighed. “I’ll let you go. I just saw that Facebook post and spiralled a little bit.”
“Understandable.”
“Please tell Buck I say hello. And I wish you both so much happiness, Tommy.”
“Thank you. And I will.”
She hung up. Tommy stared at the phone for a moment, then opened his text message thread with Evan.
You’re not gonna believe what just happened.
*****
When Evan got home at 7 am, they had their usual two hours to share breakfast and maybe a quick fuck before Tommy had to be on shift himself. They tried to sync their schedules so their off days coincided, but it didn’t always work.
“Holy shit, why didn’t we get ahead of that one?” Evan said as he burst in the door, not even bothering with “hello.” His shoes and duffel went flying and he bustled into the kitchen where Tommy was mixing the pancake batter.
“Yeah, I had the same thought,” he said, leaning over to kiss him hello.
Evan went to the coffee pot. “I didn’t even think about it, that she might see.”
“Neither did I.”
“How’d she sound?”
“Really surprised at first. Incredulous, even? Like in the what-are-the-odds way.”
“Kinda like when I found out we’d both dated her.”
“Yeah, but you’re my himbo now,” Tommy said, smirking. “No, she was just shocked. I gave her the quick rundown, and she ended up congratulating us.”
“Did you tell her it’s her fault we broke up for a year?” Evan said, popping a strawberry into his mouth.
“I think the proper person to bear the fault is me.”
“And also me. Who asks someone to move in after six months? Before even saying ‘I love you?’ And when you had a house!”
“I say we blame Josh. He got you all juiced up with that damn Glee speech.” After they’d reconciled, Evan had given him chapter and verse on his mind-boggling thought processes on that last fateful day.
“He got me feeling guilty, is what he did. That I judged you for lying to Abby. Overcorrecting is one of my special gifts.”
“Yes, it is.”
“Well, while I’m overcorrecting…why don’t we invite her?”
Tommy looked up. “To our wedding?”
“Sure, why not? She can flip a coin whose side she sits on,” Evan said, grinning like the mischievous imp that he was.
“Evan, darling, love of my life, we are not inviting our ex to our wedding.”
He scrunched up his face. “Ew. ‘Our’ ex? Makes it sound like we were in a throuple.”
“Ew, indeed.”
He cocked his head. “I dunno, though. The thought’s kinda sexy.”
“Not to me! No vaginas anywhere near my bedroom. Kinsey 6, remember?”
“Of course, my apologies.”
Tommy looked at his innocent wide-eyed face for a few beats. “You’re still thinking about it, aren’t you?”
“Can I help it if the thought of two people I have found intensely attractive doing sexy things is appealing?”
“Can I help it if the thought of Chris Hemsworth going down on you has gotten me through some lonely nights?”
“Okay, I get the point. Shutting up now.”
Tommy put a plate of pancakes in front of him. “Your shift okay?”
“Fine. Busy. I’m a bit wired. Do we have time for me to bounce on your dick for a bit before you have to head out?”
“For that, I’ll make time.” He sat down at the table at Evan’s side with his own pancakes. Evan slid a hand over and squeezed his thigh.
“Missed you, though,” he said, chewing.
“I always miss you when you’re on shift,” Tommy said.
Evan looked up at that, meeting his eyes. “Tommy, sometimes I miss you when you get up to get a beer.”
The simplicity, the sincerity of it made his chest tighten a little. He leaned forward, put his fingers under Evan’s chin and pulled him into a soft kiss, just like the first time. “I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you, too.”
“And we are not inviting my ex-fiancee who is also your ex-girlfriend to our wedding.”
Evan grinned. “Deal.”

Hey! I’m writing a story that involves a lot of different perspectives of disability, I love scifi but god can it be awful about disability so I’m trying to make an anti that. It mostly focuses on the idea of the cure narrative. A big theme at the core of it is accepting your disability because you wouldn’t be the person you are without it. You’re an important piece of the richness and diversity of humanity etc etc. That’s a message that’s very close to my heart as someone who’s neurodivergent and physically disabled from birth.
But I also know my experiences and feelings are far from universal. I wanted to show other perspectives, other interpretations of that core message, so I added a character who was recently disabled a year ago which has significantly uprooted her life. He also doubles as showing someone who became disabled through doing dangerous things he shouldn’t have been doing because I want to have a way to tackle disability as a punishment or moral thing (another shitty trope that scifi is full of! :sob:)
Her acceptance is the most raw and recent of the group’s, happening over the course of the story. But since her experience of disability is so different from mine (never having lived without it), I wanted to look for outside opinions. What are some things I should keep in mind while writing him? Do you have any recommendations for articles/blogs/etc from people with similar experiences?
Thank you! I love what this blog is doing :) <3 Apologies if this is a little incoherent, it’s one of those days
Thank you for your ask! For a character with an acquired disability, one of the big things to consider is just how much recovery there will be. Even after leaving the hospital she will be on bed rest for a bit, and afterwards comes physical and/or occupational therapy for at least a few months. Recovery is a taxing, slow process that makes a person realize just how much process they’ve lost for tasks that they didn’t think much about. He would also probably have pain and maybe even a new routine to take care of the injury. It’s hard to give specifics of what your characters recovery will involve without knowing the injury though.
As for resources, here are some links I think can help! Thank you mod Sasza for the help compiling them :] (smiley face

REAL GENTLEMEN, b. bradshaw
word count | 2.3k
pairings | bradley “rooster” bradshaw x fem!seresin!reader
summary | in which jake’s sister goes on a bad date, and bradley decides to show her how a real gentleman acts.
warnings | slight angst (not rooster’s doing), icky men just looking for sex. age gap relationship: reader is 21, rooster is 33. reader is in college. use of ‘y/n’. insinuations of smut but no actual smut. not proofread. lowercase intended.
a/n | i got this idea a few days ago and figured this would be perfect for rooster x hangman’s sister!reader, i did get carried away and i had to cut myself off before i wrote a whole ass novel. i would be more than happy to write a part two tho ;))))
it had been a month since you had seen your big brother jake in person, as he had been called back to TOP GUN for some classified mission he couldn’t tell you about, which meant limited phone calls. instead you were left back in lemoore, california in your shared apartment all by yourself. to pass the time when you weren’t in class or working part time as a server, you decided to join an online dating site. at first, it was nothing more than just trying to connect with people in the area since you weren’t from around there, but you had recently swiped right on a good looking guy who had a good sense of humor and a great personality. soon, a date had been set up for later in the week, and you felt genuinely excited.
as you sat in your room, deciding between your favorite dress and a more casual outfit, you heard the front door opening. you weren’t expecting anyone, so you grabbed the baseball that sat near your door, ignoring the uneasy pit in your stomach as you quietly walked towards the living room. you heard loud rustling, raising your bat in defense as you jumped the front door, blindly swinging. “jesus, stop– stop swinging!” you stopped your rapid swinging at the sound of your older brother's voice as he ripped the bat from your hands. “what are you doing? you coulda hurt yourself!”
“jake? shit, i thought you were an intruder or something! you could've told me you were coming back!” as angry as you were at jake for nearly giving you a heart attack, you hugged him tightly, pulling back when you noticed the group of people behind him. “and i see you brought friends.”
“ah, yes. y/n, meet the dagger squad: phoenix, rooster, bob, fanboy, payback, and you know coyote.” you furrowed your eyebrows at all the callsigns, “guys, this is my baby sister, y/n.” you smiled kindly to coyote before awkwardly waving to the rest group, now realizing you looked kind of crazy with your makeup and hair half done, wildly yielding a bat.
“sorry about the whole trying to beat you with a bat thing, jake didn’t tell me he was coming back, let alone bringing friends.” you glared at jake before stepping aside to allow the group to walk further in. “i haven't been able to go to the store this week, but you are welcome to anything in the kitchen.”
“why do you look like that?” jake questioned, you followed behind him as the dagger squad began to get comfortable.
“don’t be a jackass! i’ll have you know, i was in the middle of getting ready for my date tonight when–” you started, only to be rudely interrupted by your dumbass of a brother.
“woah, woah, woah, date? since when did you date?” he snarked to which you rolled your eyes, shoving past him.
“since you left! and now i’m running late because of you and i still haven't picked out my outfit!” you began to panic, realizing your date would be here soon and you still weren’t dressed. “fuck!” you rushed back to your room, still unsure of what to wear. you were beginning to get really frustrated when a knock sounded at your bedroom door. “come in.” the woman from the dagger squad, phoenix, entered with a hesitant smile.
“sorry, if i’m intruding but you seemed stressed the fuck out so i figured i’d try to help you out.” you smiled thankfully, holding up your two outfit options.
“thank you so much! okay, so i’m stuck between these two.” with natasha’s help, as she had properly introduced herself, you were able to get to the door before your brother could, allowing you to leave with your date before jake could interfere. “i’m leaving, bye!” you quickly shut the door, accepting the hand of your date.
the date itself didn't go horrible, at least not until the end. your date, mike, was a gentleman: opening your car door, pulling the chair out for you, the works. but it started to get weird when the server came over, ready to take your order. she looked at you, only to be interrupted by mike who proceeded to order a salad for you, while he got a steak. you didn't say anything, smiling awkwardly to the server who sent you an apologetic look. after dinner, mike led you to his car, opening the door. “so, would you like to go back to my place now, or did you want to stop somewhere before?” he said nonchalantly, leaving you bewildered and offended.
“excuse me?” mike seemed confused by your reaction. “i wasn't planning on going home with you. i thought i made that clear when we first planned the date.”
“are you being serious? i thought you were just playing hard to get.” you huffed out a laugh in disgust, “i was a gentleman, i drove you, i paid for dinner. the least you could do is come home with me.” shocked was an understatement.
“first of all, you paid for dinner, yes, but you didn't even let me order what i wanted! that hardly makes you a gentleman! second of all, expecting sex as a return to paying for dinner is the least gentleman thing i can think of! expecting sex, after someone made it clear they weren’t looking for it, is crazy!” you pushed the car door open, quickly getting out.
“where are you going?” mike called out after you, watching as you pulled out your phone. “i’m your ride!”
“i’d rather walk than be stuck in a car with a piece of shit like you!” you started walking away, the tears that you had been holding back began to cascade down your cheeks. you fumbled with your phone, pulling up jake’s contact. “jake, can you come pick me up?”
“what's wrong? are you okay?” jake’s worried voice must have caused concern amongst his friends, who’s murmurs you could barely pick up.
“the dude was a douche. please, jake.” you pleaded, taking a seat on a bench, ignoring the strange looks from passersby.
“text me your location.” you hung up after thanking jake, quickly texting him your location. you patiently waited for jake to arrive, trying to calm yourself down before jake got there. you watched as a blue bronco pulled up, surprised when jake hopped out, followed by one of his friends, who’s name you couldn’t quite remember. you groaned internally; the last thing you wanted was one of jake’s (hot) friends to see you crying on a bench after a shitty date. “what happened? are you okay? did he hurt you? cause i have no problem committing homicide for you.” that last part made you smile slightly.
“jake, i’m okay. the dude was a douchebag but he didn't hurt me or anything.” you reassured your brother, who seemed relieved. the guy behind him, goose was it?, seemed surprised at your brother’s kindness. “did you really have to bring one of your friends though?” you asked in a whisper, smiling softly to the guy, who smiled back slightly.
“sorry, my truck wouldn’t start and rooster offered to drive.” you nodded, looking to rooster who stood there awkwardly. “let's get you home.” jake and rooster led you to the bronco, jake taking the passenger seat as you climbed into the backseat. the ride was silent and awkward, as you watched out the window, listening to the quiet country music that played.
as soon as rooster’s bronco rolled to a stop, you pushed the door open, walking hurriedly to your apartment. you pushed the door open, not bothering to close it since jake was not far behind you. you rushed past the group who were watching a movie, slamming your bedroom door shut. you finally broke down, feeling disgusted and hurt by the night's events. you changed into sweats and one of jake’s old shirts you had stolen years ago, crawling into your bed. you curled into yourself under your blankets, ignoring jake as he knocked on your door.
“y/n? can we talk?” jake called through the door, his own worried expression causing concern amongst his friends. they had never seen jake like this.
“i’m fine, jake. just leave me alone, please.” you begged your brother, who seemed to accept you weren’t ready to talk. he left you alone to wallow in your pity, for god knows how long.
when you finally got up, it was dark in the apartment and the dagger squad was asleep in the living room. you tried to stay quiet, walking toward the kitchen, flipping on a small light that hopefully wouldn’t wake the sleeping aviators in the other room. you jumped when you noticed a figure sitting at the island, who seemed surprised to see you.
“shit! you scared me!” you whisper-shouted at rooster who was happily enjoying a bowl of ice cream. “what are you doing in here?” rooster looked at you and then to the bowl in front of him, and then back to you.
“i could ask you the same question. it’s past your bedtime, isn’t it?” you rolled your eyes, grabbing a bowl and spoon before joining rooster at the island.
“well, this is my apartment, and that is my ice cream.” you began to scoop ice cream into your bowl, smirking slightly at rooster. “and i don’t have a bedtime!” rooster laughed at your exasperation. “what are you doing up, rooster? i thought an old man like you would be snoring loudly like your pals out there.”
“first of all, you can call me bradley, if you’d like,” you nodded; the name fit him well. “second of all, i am not an old man!” you laughed a little too loudly, your eyes widening when you heard someone stir. you and bradley stilled for a moment, but nothing happened. “i just… couldn’t sleep, i guess.” bradley shrugged, pushing his ice cream around with his spoon.
“yeah, same.” you quieted for a moment before an idea popped in your head. “y’know, when i can’t sleep i usually go for a drive. i know this place where you can see the stars clearly, i can show you, if you’d like.” bradley seemed to hesitate for just a moment before agreeing. you both quietly put on some shoes, bradley grabbing his keys as you both tiptoed out of the apartment. you followed bradley to his bronco, smiling as he opened the door for you, allowing you to climb into the passenger’s seat. “i’ll direct you there.”
bradley put on a random radio station, singing along as you directed him to your favorite place. it took about thirty minutes before bradley was pulling over on a dirt road near an open grassy area. you climbed out the bronco, bradley meeting you on the other side. you took his hand into yours, ignoring the heat that began to spread on your face, as you led him over to the area. “look.” you pointed to the sky which held millions of stars, which never failed to amaze you. “there’s the little dipper, it's a part of the ursa minor constellation.” you explained, pointing out the constellation to bradley, who followed your finger. “isn’t it beautiful?” bradley looked at you, taking in the beauty that is you.
“yeah.” his voice came out barely above a whisper, his eyes still trained on you. he was pulled back to reality as you pointed out more of the stars. bradley watched as your face lit up while talking about all things astrology related, he couldn’t understand how someone could hurt someone as sweet as you. he may not have known you very long, but bradley could tell you were special.
“y’know, you can’t let a dick like mike ruin your night.” bradley spoke, breaking the silence that had blanketed the two of you. he had driven the bronco to the grassy area, helping you into the bed of his truck so you can look at the stars more comfortably.
you looked at bradley before looking back at the sky. “it’s not just him, most guys are like that nowadays.” you shrugged, hugging your knees to your chest.
“most, but not all.” you turned to bradley who was facing you. “you didn’t deserve that, y/n.”
“do you have a girlfriend, bradley? a wife?” bradley paused for a moment, which gave you your answer. “why not?”
“haven’t found the right girl to tame me, i suppose.” bradley shrugged, watching as you giggled slightly at his response. “why do you ask?”
“just figured a guy like you would’ve been taken already. you’re a real gentleman, bradley, y’know that?” you moved onto your knees and closer to bradley. you thought he would move away, but he stayed in his spot, watching with uncertainty. “i’m sure there many ladies who would like to tame you, bradley.” you inched closer, now between bradley’s legs as he watched you closely.
“like who? you?” bradley watched you come even closer, impossibly closer.
“maybe…” bradley knew it was wrong, that he shouldn’t want his friend’s little sister like this.
“jake’ll be pissed.” bradley watched you roll your pretty little eyes. “fuck it, can i kiss you?” you nodded, bradley pressing his lips to yours in a passionate kiss. even in a moment of passion, bradley was still a gentleman. he pulled you on to his lap, kissing you as if he never would again, which was probably true if jake were to ever find out. but that didn’t matter right now.
“i’m going to show you how a real gentleman acts.”

Previous part | Next part
“Lieutenant,” the man started, glancing down at his notes. “I regret to inform you,” He paused once more and Jake really wished that the man would just spit it out already. “Your wife was eight weeks pregnant. Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done to save the baby.” Suddenly, Jake’s whole world came crashing down around him.
His knees dropped out from under him. Within seconds, Rooster was by his side, grabbing the large pilot before he could crash into the ground. The mustached aviator thanked the doctor quietly as he pulled Jake into him. As the older man stepped away, Jake’s breathing sped up. You were two months pregnant. With his baby. He had no idea and if you did, you probably didn’t even remember by now.
“Jake, you gotta tell me what’s goin’ on.” Bradley murmured as fat tears began rolling down Jake’s cheeks. He hated the fact that he was now crying in front of Bradley and Natasha but at the thought of his wife losing their baby, he couldn’t help it.
Holding him tightly, Bradley waited patiently for the pilot to explain what news the doctor had given him. “She was pregnant,” The pilot eventually choked out. Bradley couldn’t help but focus on the was. “She lost it in the crash. The doctor said that there was nothing that they could do to save it.” Sighing, Bradley squeezed his wingman tighter. He knew that the two of you had been trying to get pregnant ever since you got married. The two of you would make amazing parents, everyone was sure of it.
Now, Jake not only had to deal with the fact that he couldn’t tell you that you were married, he also couldn’t tell you that you were pregnant. He sniffled quietly in Bradley’s arms. Jake had no idea what he was going to do.
You woke up to the steady beeping of the heart monitor. Blinking slowly, you sat up on the squeaky bed and groaned as your joints cracked. A few moments passed as you sat in silence, mulling over everything that had happened since you woke up. You instantly thought of Jake. the man was so familiar and yet you couldn’t even remember him. It was driving you crazy.
Seconds later the same nurse from earlier walked in, interrupting your train of thought. She smiled at you kindly. “How are you feeling now, Dear?” The elderly woman questioned as she began taking your vitals. You watched her silently for a few seconds.
“A bit better,” You started. “My breathing is a little easier and my leg doesn’t hurt as bad,” You gestured toward your leg resting on the bed in a white cast. The nurse nodded, jotting down a few notes before informing you that she would be back later and moving to step out of your room. “Could you actually do me a favor ma’am?” You question shyly. She nodded, looking up and watching you patiently. “Could you please send Jake in?”
With a knowing smile, the elderly nurse nodded and stepped out of your room to fetch the pilot. There were butterflies fluttering all around your stomach as you willed yourself not to stare at the door. You didn’t know why you were so anxious to see him. The gentle knock on your door had your head turning so fast you almost got whiplash.
Jake was standing there with a hesitant look on his face. If you looked close enough, you could see the tear stains on his cheeks. You blushed slightly under his heavy gaze and patted the arm of the chair next to you. “How’re you feeling?” Jake questioned as he sat down on the plastic chair. At that moment you realized that he had spent four days waiting for you to wake up in that same uncomfortable plastic chair, and never complained one bit. Did you really mean that much to him?
“A bit better,” You started, noticing the small smile that rose on Jake’s face. “I still can’t remember anything, if that’s what you’re wondering.” That was all he could have wanted. You assumed that that was all he was worried about.
Immediately, the pilot began shaking his head. “That isn’t all I was asking. I really did want to know if you were okay,” Now it was your turn to smile, cheeks turning a crimson colour at the sincerity of his words. Jake grinned. He was glad that he could still make you smile like that. “I was wondering, if you’re feeling up to it,” He started. “If you would like to meet some friends?” He watched you carefully to gauge your reaction.
You sucked in a breath. Even though you were anxious to meet people that you may not even remember, you knew that it would need to happen eventually. For some reason, You trusted Jake. Part of you knew that he would never purposely put you in an uncomfortable position. You nodded and Jake smiled softly.
After a few last words, Jake stepped out of the room to retrieve Bradley and Natasha. You waited anxiously, plucking at a loose thread on the scratchy hospital sheets.
Phoenix had her head resting on Bradley’s shoulder as she watched him play Candy Crush. His thumb stopped moving across the screen when he heard someone approach them. Through sleepy eyes, Phoenix looked up at Jake. The two tired pilots waited for Jake to begin speaking. “She wants to see you two,” Without further explanation, they stood from the hard chair and followed Jake down the hall. He stopped them in front of your room. “Please, don’t say anything about us or the baby.” Jake practically pleaded with them. They nodded with sympathetic expressions.
When your door cracked open, your head shot up to watch who was going to walk in. Jake came in first, followed by a woman that looked oddly familiar, you just couldn’t remember her name. But you could remember seeing her at a navy bar one night. It was just after you were stationed in Lemoore. And then the second person walked in. You immediately recognized the mustache.
“Bradley?” Jake felt his stomach drop. You remembered Bradshaw, and yet you couldn’t remember your own husband. Bradley spoke your nickname quietly, looking at Jake for permission before sitting in that same uncomfortable chair. “Why,” You started, glancing between Bradley, the strange woman, and Jake. You couldn’t help but notice the empty look in his eyes and the white skin around his knuckles as he clenched his fists. “Why can I remember you and no one else?”
Bradley smiled at you gently. The two of you had been stationed overseas when you first met. It was only a few months before when you met your future husband. You and Bradley had instantly hit it off, and ever since then, he had thought of you as a little sister. “I think it's because we met first.” He was trying to communicate a silent message to Jake. The only reason that you could remember Bradley and not him was simply because you met first. Not because you cared about Bradley more than Jake.
Jake nodded to himself, knowing that whether he wanted to believe it or not, Bradley’s words were true. Seconds later, you were nodding as well.
Standing up, Bradley moved next to Phoenix, encouraging her to introduce herself. The female pilot had tears in her eyes. Over the past three years, ever since you met, the two of you had become best friends. She was your maid of honour when you got married to Jake. Even though you couldn’t remember it, she was there to hold your hair back when you were throwing up, she was there every time you anxiously took a pregnancy test, and she was there for you after each negative result. She knew you better than anyone and the same was true for you.
“My name’s Natasha,” She started. Her words were watery and she willed herself not to cry. “We met a few years ago in Lemoore and we’ve been best friends ever since.” Now you were almost in tears. You couldn’t believe that you had forgotten your own best friend.
Jake watched as you and Phoenix became reacquainted, the female pilot filling you in on all the crazy adventures you had over the past few years. There was a small smile on his face. He loved seeing you happy, and the bright grin on your face was the best sight he had seen in weeks. He shared a look with Bradley, silently thanking him for staying by his side throughout all of this. The two of them sat down on the other plastic chairs in the far corner of the room, watching you and Natasha laugh with soft smiles.
Everything seemed to be taking a turn for the better now. Given everything that happened yesterday, Jake was almost positive that things would never get better. He knew that eventually, he would have to tell you everything. But for now, he was only focused on the wide smile on your face. Maybe everything would be okay after all.

At Home Barista (Jake Seresin x F!Reader)
Author's note: Hello again! This is just a short story I thought would be cute. Gotta give all of Glen’s characters some love right? Here's a fluffy Jake Seresin drabble.
Warnings: None! Just fluff!
Jake was nervous as he set up everything. He hoped he had gotten everything she needed. “Calm down, she's going to love it!” Rooster said as he put ice in a cooler. They were celebrating your birthday today. It was the first one since you and Jake had gotten together a year ago. In that time, Jake had noticed just how much you loved coffee. Espresso, drip coffee, instant coffee, all of it! Jake had also watched you scrolling TikTok trying to find the best home espresso machine for months. Using people's opinions and videos to make a decision. Jake took matters into his own hands by buying you the machine you had been eyeing, the Breville Barista Express. The rest of the Dagger squad helped Jake get the rest of the pieces by buying something he had assigned to them. Now, Jake stood in front of the small coffee nook he had made in your shared kitchen. He had set up all your syrups, sauces, and other nick nacks in this dedicated area. It was perfect. Now, they just had to wait for you to get home.
“Hangman! Bring the burgers out here and quit rearranging that thing!” Coyote calls from the backyard. Jake huffs through nose and grabs the marinated burgers from the fridge.
While Coyote and Bob cooked, the rest of the group had some drinks and enjoyed the setting sun. “Who knew that Hangman of all people would be nervous about the gift he got his girl?” Phoenix jokes as she notices Jake constantly checking his phone to see if you're home. “This is serious! This is one of her favorite hobbies.. or obsession? Whichever makes more sense.” Jake jumps up, nearly spilling his beer when he hears a car door shut. “She's here!” He calls while running for the front door. The rest of your small group of friends huddle in the kitchen while they wait for you to come in.
“Jake? I thought we were getting together tomorrow?” You ask as he opens the front door. Jake smiles as he watches you come up the stairs. “Well, today is your actual birthday. We wanted to celebrate today!” Jake said as he got behind you and covered your eyes. “Jake Seresin! What have you done?” You asked playfully as you smiled and let Jake lead you around. Jake smirked as he led you to the kitchen, “Me? You know I'm the perfect little angel.”
Rooster scoffs at Jake's words, but smiles as he covers it with a cough when Jake glared at him. “Surprise!!” Everyone yells when Jake has you standing in front of the coffee nook. You stared shocked for a moment and then realized what they had all done. “Jake? Is this..? It is! You bought me that espresso machine I wanted?!” You asked excitedly as you looked at everything. Jake smirks as he nods, “Sure did baby girl. Everyone else bought other pieces to complete your little barista station. Now, you can practice all those recipes you've been looking at online.”
You turn and look at Jake with eyes full of love. Jake smiles cockily and opens his arms for you. He knew that look and laughed as you jumped on him and hugged him tightly. “Thank you! Thank you thank you thank you! I love it so much!” Jake couldn't help the small chuckles he let out as you pepper his face with kisses. You jump down and then hug everyone else on the Dagger squad for your gifts. Thanking them multiple times. You felt like they were your chosen family and it made your heart swell that they cared so much for you.
“Alright! Let's eat!” Jake said as he ushered everyone to the dining room where they had made a small buffet to make the burgers and hotdogs.
-_-_-Two Days Later-_-_-
“You okay there Hangman??” Bob asks as he watches Jake excitedly do his work. Jake had been rushing around all day and sporadically doing things.
“Yes!! Yes yes yes. I'm great! Never better! Hey! Don't mess up my clean floor!” Jake yells as he sees a rookie going to walk where he had just cleaned. Jake then decided the best course of action was to chase them down.
“He said he had a quad shot latte this morning and he usually doesn't drink a lot of coffee. Y/N has been feeding him coffee ever since the party to see if she is making it right.” Rooster explains with a shake of his head.
“He's not even assigned to clean the floors…” Bob says, confused as he watched Jake irritably clean the floor again where the rookie had been walking.

Next thing you know - Jake Seresin Imagine
A/N: This is a super cute imagine that I could not get out of my head. It is super fluffy and follows your relationship with Jake
Warnings: Pregnancy and tooth rotting fluff <3 Also, this is unedited so I'm hoping there aren't too many mistakes
“Rooster, just hit the damn ball.” Jake’s eyes rolled as he leaned against the wall of the Hard Deck. It was a typical Friday night and the bar was buzzing with the excitement of the upcoming weekend. The dagger squad was all there as was tradition after a long week and this weekend was no different.
As Rooster was taking his time, Jake let his eyes wander around the bar. His gaze landed on you, a super pretty girl he had never seen before. You were wearing civilians and leaning against the bar next to some other female aviators. You caught his attention immediately. Your smile lit up the bar and your laugh was absolutely infectious. He had to know your name.
He approached, a smirk on his lips as he leaned against the bar beside you. He ordered a beer for himself before asking you what you were drinking, which you told him happily. The two of you sat there flirting back and forth all night, laughing and carrying on. “Can I take you on a proper date?” Jake was hopeful as he leaned closer to you at the bar, his words in your ear as you giggled and nodded, kissing his cheek before you left with your friends.
He was smitten from that first date, though he wouldn’t admit it. But, when he showed up on your door step with the prettiest bouquet of flowers you had ever seen, you were pretty smitten with him too. The two of you became serious fairly quickly and you spent all your time together.
“When is she moving in?” Phoenix’s words were laced with teasing as you walked up to the bar at the hard deck, ordering drinks for your boyfriend and the rest of the squad. They had welcomed you in with open arms, insisting that you made hangman bearable. “Not for a while, guys. We’re not there yet.” The words left hangman’s mouth as he watched you, an easy smile on his lips. You were a new light in his life and he was already so in love with you.
However, a few months later he would eat those words as the two of you sat in his living room. You were cuddled up to him, your head on his chest and his arms lazily thrown around you. “Move in with me.” It wasn’t a question, more of a statement. The minute he said the words you looked up at him with a raised eyebrow, trying to judge his facial expressions. Once you realized he was serious you burst out into a bright grin and nodded, agreeing as you kissed him hard.
You started to slowly move your things in, finding a place for everything. You had talked to Jake and had decided on throwing out his old rug in his room and replacing it with yours, but he had one stipulation, his deer head got to stay. It was from his last ever hunt with his Grandpa, and it was special to him. You agreed, deciding to decorate it randomly with hats and things for the holidays. You made it fun. You made the space both of yours and you couldn’t have been happier.
The next few months went by smoothly as you and Jake got used to living together, each day an adventure that the two of you couldn’t wait to go on. You got to wake up next to each other and go to sleep together every night. You had late night conversations, morning cuddles, and afternoon kitchen dances to old country music. It was everything you didn’t know you needed. Life was going absolutely perfect.
“Mom was in such a hurry for us to get here, I don’t know why.” Your confusion laced your words as you and Jake walked up to your parents house. You were knocking on the door when you turned to look at Jake and you saw him down on one knee, a beautiful box and ring in his hand. Your moms door opened and she was sitting there grinning, tears in her eyes as you immediately said yes and threw your arms around Jake. You were getting to marry your best friend and the love of your life.
The months leading up to the wedding were a dream come true. Jake wanted you to have the best of everything. Anything you wanted, count it as done. You were able to plan your fairy tale wedding down to your Prince Charming. He would be standing across from you at the altar, his navy dress whites making him look handsome as ever across from you. There were lots of tears shed and more smiles and laughs had.
At the reception, it was considered the party of the year. Rooster was already half drunk during his best man speech, but he made sure that you knew how special you were to everyone. He saw how happy you made Jake and that’s all that mattered. The speech brought you to tears and Jake helped you to carefully wipe them away. The night was absolutely beautiful. It was everything you could have wanted. Jake loved showing you off as his new wife, calling you Mrs. Seresin as much as he could and constantly bragging on you. The two of you radiated so much love for each other that it was like you were glowing.
After all the wedding excitement, you were headed to Hawaii. You guys were excited to spend a week on the beach, forgetting sunscreen existed. You both got pretty bad sunburns the first day. However, you had never felt so content. You had a week of relaxation with your best friend and husband by your side. No navy to interrupt, no rooster (you loved him, but he could be a lot sometimes), and no responsibilities. You just had to enjoy your time with Jake, and that was the easiest thing in the world.
Once you two got home, you started looking into buying a house. Jake had one in mind and he knew you would love it. It was one you had said you loved and you had looked at it a lot. Well, Jake had taken it upon himself to make sure that you got that dream home. He hired a realtor and the two of you bought the house and turned it into a home. It was a dream come true.
The next few years went by fairly quickly, your new house becoming a home. Jake got a big promotion in the Navy and was home a lot more now; which was something you both loved. Jake was getting more and more used to being a husband and he loved every single moment with you. “I’m ready for kids.” His words were random as you laid on the couch one day, your eye brows furrowing together, a look of pure love on your face. “Really?!” “Really, baby girl.”
The two of you got too it and had been trying for months. You were taking pregnancy tests and hoping for the best; when one day it popped up positive. You were elated and you couldn’t wait to tell Jake. He was at work, but you had the test sitting out on the counter. As soon as he got home, you pulled him into the bathroom and waited for him to notice. He picked up the test and looked at you, tears rolling down your cheeks as you nodded. “I’m going to be a dad?” You felt him run over and pick you up, spinning you in his arms. “You’re going to be a dad, Jake.”
Your pregnancy flew by, Jake and you both being absolutely terrified yet excited for the new baby to come. You found out you were having a little boy and you were over the moon. You guys had decorated the nursery in planes and his new wardrobe was packed full of clothes from your family and Jake’s both. You guys had everything planned out, down to his name, Colton Lee Seresin.
It was bearing your due date and you felt like you were going to explode. Jake was a very dotting husband, your every wish his command as he tried to make things as easy as he could. But, as you stood in the kitchen making dinner one night, you felt your water break. You were in shock, Jake’s name barely leaving your lips as he rushes in to check on you. “It’s time.” And with those two words, he was rushing to get the emergency diaper bag ready.
He helped you into the truck, speeding as carefully as he could to the hospital. Once you were situated he was sitting next to you in the delivery room, his clothes replaced with scrubs and a sterile hat that covered his head. You were giggling at how silly he looked as he squeezed your hand, pressing a kiss to your forehead. It was an amazing moment and they soon told you to start pushing. “How you doing there dad?” The doctor asked, smiling at Jake as it fully sank in. He was about to be a dad.
After a couple of hours of pushing, your little boy was placed in your arms. You and Jake were instantly in love, the tiny bundle of joy eliciting big emotions from both of you. Tears of joy and happiness left your eyes as you held him close. He was your new purpose. He was the new light of your life.
Jake took the two of you home once it was time, an easy smile on his lips as he watched you try to show Colton around his nursery. “And look, this is the kind of planes your daddy flies.” Your voice was soft as you pointed at the F-18 on the mobile of planes, the tiny bundle making cooing sounds in your arms. “Yeah, I think it’s pretty cool too.” Your voice was hushed as you sat him carefully in the crib, walking over to Jake and into his arms.
Jake felt like he was falling in love again as he watched Colton grow up and become his own person. He was starting to walk and starting to talk and every single new milestone was beyond amazing to the blonde pilot. He was sitting on the floor of the nursery with the little boy when he heard the words Dadda leave his lips. Jake got teary eyed as he yelled for you, encouraging the boy to say the words again. When he did, you both had tears of proudness rolling down your cheeks.
He was growing like a weed, and you had been told repeatedly that kids grow fast. But, you never realized just how fast. In what seemed like no time, you were taking Colton to his first day of school. You were dropping him off and your social little boy waved bye at you and ran inside to make friends, your heart running off with him. You were proud, but you didn’t expect it to be this hard.
“Time is going by too quick.” The words left Jake’s lips as he watched his son, now 14 getting ready for his first date with a girl from his class. He had asked her out and was super excited to go to the movies with her. Jake had given him the speech already of how to be a gentleman and you had given him money to use to treat her tonight. Before he left, he threw his arms around the both of you and told you he loved you. It was enough to make you both emotional.
“Dad, I wrecked the car.” The words left Colton’s mouth as he walked into your room at half past midnight. You had been asleep, but had woken up when you heard Jake raising his voice. Colton had just gotten his driver’s license and his first car a couple of months ago. As you heard the fight get more heated you got out of bed and walked in, putting your hand on Jake’s bicep. “Honey, calm down. We can get him another car.” Your voice was soft enough to calm down your husband, a frustrated sigh leaving his lips. “We’ll finish talking about this tomorrow.” His voice was a promise as you walked over to your son, looking him in his eyes as you placed a hand on his shoulder. “We’re just glad you’re okay. With that, you pressed a kiss to his forehead and told him to get to bed.
“I got accepted to USC!” You heard the screams of victory coming from the front room as you walked in and saw Colton excitedly dancing around the room with his girlfriend, Sydney. “We’re both going, I can’t wait!” He pulled her into a hug and you heard Jake inhale a deep breath. “That’s all the way across the country.” His voice was quiet and sad as you patted his back, walking into the living room. The conversation shifted to how far away the college was, and if they were serious about it. When they both reassured you it was what they wanted, you took the opportunity to console Jake. He would be okay, he was his boy after all.
Colton had gone on to USC and had taken an interest in becoming an engineer. You and Jake fully supported him and Sydney as the two continued to date through college. Once graduation hit, you watched as your son proposed to the love of his life and you got to gain a daughter-in-law. You welcomed her into the family with open arms, so excited for the two of them.
Their family continued to grow along with yours as you got word that Sydney was pregnant with twins, a little boy and a little girl. You and Jake were over the moon ecstatic to be grandparents, watching them go through all the milestones the two of you went through in your younger years. She went through all the same things you did, often coming to you for advice. You gave it gladly, treating her like your own daughter.
Once the twins were born and old enough to hang out at your and Jake's house, the two of you knew you did good. You were able to fall more in love with each other as you watched the interactions with the grandkids. The two of you often took them to church and then out to get icecream after, treating it as a tradition you were starting. Jake also loved getting to take them out fishing and teaching them just like he taught Colton.
"We made an amazing life for ourselves." The words left Jake's lips as you sat next to him on the porch, your grandchildren running around the yard and playing. Sydney and Colton were inside fixing dinner, telling you and Jake to relax. It was an amazing moment and you couldn't agree with your husband more. "I'm so glad I didn't just brush you off as a cocky pilot the day we met." Your words were teasing as he reached over to squeeze your hand, his laughter ringing out. "I love you, baby." You smiled easily at him, your head leaning back against your rocking chair. "I love you too."

Can I request yandere Valorant Yoru x reader? Pls and Ty!
I'm sorry that it took me so long to finish it! It got longer and longer and I kinda couldn't stop writing ahhh ;w; But I hope that you like it and have a great day!!
Words: 611
Warning: mdni, Yandere, blood, death, underwear kink, stalking, masturbation
⇢ At first, Yoru didn‘t notice you
⇢ Until one day, when you had to defeat some omega agents and you saved him
⇢ That was the moment, Yoru really saw you
⇢ At first, he will only watch you
⇢ Then, the more he gets interested in you, the more he has the urge to learn everything about you
⇢ He will stalk you
⇢ Yoru will often go into a new dimension, while he watches you from in there.
⇢ At the end, he knows basically everything about you. He knows how you would react to little things
⇢ I might even say, that he knows you better than you know yourself
⇢ After couple of months and learning your routine, he began his plan…
⇢ He stole your underwear.
⇢ The moment you went away to train for the next mission, he walked out of his dimension and casually walked to your dirty clothes, that you had planned to wash later, and grabbed one of them
⇢ He immediately went to his room, locked the door and smelled it, before he took care of his problem… The big one between his legs.
⇢ He masturbates at least three times, while holding your underwear, before he will put them back to your other ones
⇢ After month 4, people realized that Yoru's eyes sometimes twitched, the moment you talked with another agent or even laughed at one of their jokes. They immediately knew that he was smitten with you.
⇢ And they were right. He likes… no…. loves you.
⇢ That‘s why he is so often jealous. Some agents like Phoenix and Jett teased him for it, but they just thought that he was jealous like some people might be… Not the other kind of jealous guy, who dreamt of killing every single person who even dared to touch you on your arm. Even if it is just a light touch but nope… He won’t like it…
⇢ Most of them (except for you) knew that he was into you, so why did they touch you? The person he loved? The one person who belonged to him?
⇢ Sometimes, when you fell asleep, he would come and watches you for a couple of minutes. Even touch your cheeks, chest and every inch of skin he could see
⇢ Yandere!Yoru is one who would kill people to protect you
⇢ At missions, he will try to stay near you to protect you from the bad guys
⇢ Yoru will kill every single person that tries to hurt you. Hell, even if they are near you, they are dead
⇢ He will watch you in his dimension, when you have nothing to do during the missions
⇢ If you ever see Yoru in your bedroom, he will just lie and tells you, that he wanted to spend some time with you
⇢ He will appreciate the other agents if they will try to play the matchmaker for you two
⇢ But will be super mad, if another agent had their eyes on you. Hell no… You are his!
⇢ He is not afraid to walk to the other agents to beat them up, while whispering into their ear that you are his and that they will never have a chance
⇢ If the other agent will try to tell you about Yoru’s obsession, they will die. Yoru will just lie and tell everyone that there was an accident…
⇢ “(Y/N), would you like to try this new drink?“
⇢ Don’t worry… Yandere!Yoru would never hurt you…
⇢ He will just make you fall asleep…
⇢ Yandere!Yoru just wants to watch you…

Phoenix Wright x f!reader first kiss?
Hiii I hope this is okay!! Also sorry i made reader more gender neutral
You and Phoenix have been together for several months now, nearing a year. You tend to help Phoenix when Maya or anyone else is unavailable to help him, and when you don’t have anything else to do with your work, since you like helping him when you can.
You were reading through a file, picking out some papers which you deemed useful or important for the upcoming trial, and setting them down on the table in front of you.
“Thanks for the help, Y/n,” you heard a familiar voice say to you, making you look up from the files you were reading, a faint smile on your face.
“You’re welcome, Phoenix. If I weren’t around, do you think your office would look as tidy as it does now?”
“Who knows?” You both laughed a bit in response, you shaking your head a bit as you closed the folder in your hand.
“You nervous for tomorrow?” You asked, handing him the packet of paperwork that you had gathered for him.
“I always am, but I won’t let them know that.”
“Of course you don’t, and that’s a good thing.” You stood up and made your way over to him, slightly adjusting his tie which was coming loose.
“Besides, I have you to help me with organization.”
“That is true. At least now you’re not all over the place, scrambling around for evidence or anything.”
“Well, I mean I still am, just not as badly now.”
“Fair enough I suppose.”
“We should probably get to sleep soon, it’s getting pretty late,” you pointed out as you looked out the window.
“Yeah, got an early morning tomorrow.”
“True, now come on.” You put the papers you had been sorting away where he would be able to find them the next morning before you two made your way to your shared room, to get some much needed sleep.
It was now the morning of the trial, and you and Phoenix were now walking into the courthouse, him with a stack of papers which you had organized for him, and you were empty handed, as you were just here as support.
“You’ll do great in there, Phoenix, just like always. I’ll see you later.” You leaned up and kissed his cheek before you made your way into the courtroom to find a place to sit. Phoenix watched you leave, a soft smile on his face. He was always so happy to have you by his side, you were always so helpful and supportive of him.
“Right, let’s do this.” He said to no one in particular, making his way over to his client, who had been waiting for him, before the two made their way into the courtroom after a brief moment to discuss a few things before the trial began.
It’s finally over. The trial which has taken him three days, is finally over and he got the not guilty verdict that he had been working for his client. After a brief congratulations, the two went their own way, Phoenix now looking for you.
“Phoenix!” And speaking of you, here you are.
“Hey, there you are.” You smiled as you made your way over to him, pulling him into a hug, which caught him off guard at first, before hugging you back.
“You did great in there! I knew you would.”
“Of course, I always do my best, Y/n.”
“I know that. Now come here, I have something for you,” and before he could even say anything, you leaned closer to him, lightly grabbing onto his tie and pulling him closer to you, and kissed him, which he definitely wasn’t expecting, but wasn’t complaining, as he reciprocated the kiss, holding you close to him. The moment didn’t last long, as you two remembered you were in the middle of a public space, which caused you two to pull away.
“Y/n.”
“Yes, Phoenix?”
“I just realized something.”
“Hmm?”
“That… was our first kiss.”
“…oh shoot you’re absolutely right. I’m… surprised it’s taken this long.”
“You and me both.”
“I guess I just didn’t think much about it?” You both shrugged, laughing a bit in response.
“You know…” you started, placing your hands on your hips, “I wouldn’t mind another,”
“Of course. Let’s wait until we’re in a less public place, alright?”
“Oh fine.” You chuckled a bit and took his hand before the two of you left the courtroom.

Where Do You Go? | three | Bradley Rooster Bradshaw
Your husband died in a training accident, unexpectedly. So what happens when you find yourself leaning on his best friend and wingman, Rooster Bradshaw?
Part One Part Two
It felt strange, going out without Kurtis by your side. Three months without him. Three weeks with only Rooster as your company. He did his best, just like he promised. But the empty ache was still there. He couldn’t get rid of that even if he tried.
But you allowed him to convince you to come to the Hard Deck, just for a little while tonight.
You planned on leaving before Rooster started playing piano and singing, mostly because you didn’t want to cry in the bar. Not again. But you weren’t sure how you were going to get through even just a short amount of time. Not when everyone that knew and worked with Kurtis would probably be there. But you promised Rooster.
So you took a deep breath and stepped through the doors.
Rooster could feel the moment you walked in, he wasn’t sure how, but he knew. He could feel it to the point that he missed his shot and scratched while shooting pool with Phoenix and some of the others. He straightened his back and licked his lips, trying to get rid of the dry feeling before making his way over to you.
You tried to muster a smile, but he could see just how strained it was, how fake. You had on shorts today and a nice blouse. You combed your hair and even put on a little makeup. The sight made something stir in Rooster’s chest. Just like the sight of him in his uniform khakis made you feel some sort of way.
Then the guilt settled in for both of you. You, because you realized it was a strange sense of attraction that you were feeling for Rooster. You always knew he was attractive, you always said he would make some woman so lucky. Yet he never brought anyone around, claiming no one was ever interested. Guilt because you lost your husband mere months ago, and somehow you were already looking at another man, his best friend nonetheless.
And Rooster…the guilt for him was somehow worse. Because he knew how wrong it was to look at you. You were his best friend’s widow, the woman he promised to protect and look after. Not lust after. There was never anything in the agreement about being allowed to want you. Because in that moment, he did want you. He wanted to take you out to his bronco and keep you there. But he didn’t have the right to do that, or to feel any of this. You were strictly off limits. His only job was to protect you and help you navigate this new life without Kurtis, not try to replace him.
“Hi,” You sounded out of breath when you finally reached Rooster.
“Hey, you made it,” Was the first thing Rooster could think of to say.
Obviously you made it. You were standing right in front of him, eyes glassy like you’d been crying earlier in the day. He hated seeing you cry. He’d seen enough of it in the last weeks that he was sure he would never get the image out of his mind.
You stood, one foot awkwardly on top of the other as you held your wrist. He knew you were covering the scabs from when you quite literally tried to scratch off your tattoo just two weeks earlier. Another one of your outbursts like with the pictures.
Though, you were glad to find out later that Rooster was able to save all of the photographs and even a few of the frames. You wished you could smash them all over again, because for just a few moments, the ache was gone. While he held you, the ache was manageable, you could live with it like that. Unlike now, where you felt like it might swallow you whole and leave no trace of you behind.
“Do you want a drink?” He asked, motioning over to the bar.
He still had his sunglasses on. He told you a little while ago that they belonged to his dad, one of the few things he had left of him. The sunglasses and all of the Hawaiian t-shirts he liked to wear when he wasn’t in uniform. You used to make fun of him for them, but now you understood. Because now you slept in Kurtis’ old shirts, you clutched onto the few items you kept. His favorite things showed in a drawer in the back of your closet.
“A drink would be really good, actually,” You breathe out, nodding slowly.
He smiles at you before leading you towards the bar and waving Penny over. You don’t pay attention to what he orders for you. But you have faith that he knows all of your favorite things, because he’s ordered them so many times over the years for you. He would get round after round when he came out with you and Kurtis. He liked to treat the two of you.
“Here,” He slips a glass into your hand, “It’s a double and then some so, take it easy.”
You nod, taking a sip of the lemonade and vodka, feeling the alcohol slip down your throat. You liked that feeling, always had. But now it was another thing to distract you from everything else. Just like the way Rooster was now holding your hand and gently pulling you along with him was something else. Anything with Rooster was something to distract you.
You didn’t want to rely on him as just a distraction though. But you couldn’t allow yourself to want more from him. It wouldn’t be right.
How long is long enough? How long until you can stop feeling so guilty for enjoying being with another man, even if it has nothing to do with romance? How long until you can be with another man, really be with them, and not feel guilty for it?
“You doing okay?” He brings his lips close to your ear so you can hear him.
You nod, even though you aren’t sure. Your skin feels too tight for your body. You keep expecting to turn around and find Kurtis watching you from across the bar like he did so many nights over the years. You and Rooster would play darts together while Kurtis hung back with a big smile on his face. Or you would follow Rooster to the piano and play with him. You were the musical one, not Kurtis. He couldn’t carry a tune in a wheelbarrow even if he tried.
The thought brings a large lump to your throat, making it hard to breathe for a moment. What would he say if he was here to see you clutching onto Rooster like he was your anchor in a storm? Would he be mad at you, or relieved that his friend was there to take care of you?
God…his friend…his best friend. His best man. The man who stood up next to him as he recited his vows to you. The man who asked so politely before taking you onto the dance floor and gently swaying with you for a while. The man who hammered on the piano for half the night and brought life to every party.
But he only brought life to the party with Kurtis. Because now, just like you, Rooster felt like he was missing a limb. He could feel it deep in his chest every time he looked over at the corner table that he used to sit at with the two of you. Someone else was there now, not knowing the significance of that stupid booth.
He took a deep breath and tugged you alongside him. He had a promise to keep. And he needed to keep his hands and his thoughts to himself while he did his damned best to keep it. He wouldn’t put you into a position that would make you backside and shut him out. He needed you just as much as you might have needed him. He needed to be near you, because he felt like he could finally breathe when he was. He didn’t see Kurtis crash everytime he closed his eyes when you were near him, or hear it play out again and again in his mind.
“Do you want to go play something?” He asked, seeing the way you kept looking over at the piano.
You didn’t have time to think before you were nodding slowly, like you were in a trance. He nodded back and let go of you long enough to walk over and pull the plug on the jukebox. Then his hand was back in yours, tugging you towards the piano. He sat you down on the bench before taking his seat right next to you.
“Can you play Heroes?” You asked softly.
There’s a sad shimmer in his eyes as he nods and starts playing old familiar chords. Kurtis loved David Bowie’s Heroes, but he loved it even more when you and Rooster played it like this. He loved the piano and the sound of your voices together. Up until now, you couldn’t even bring yourself to think of the song. So you closed your eyes and let the music fill you, one hand on the side of the old piano so you could feel the vibrations.
The bar was silent as you sang. Everyone here seemed to understand what was happening. If you opened your eyes you would’ve seen the way some people were already crying as Rooster started to sing. Or the way that Rooster had his eyes on you and you alone, not even paying attention to where his hands were on the keys. He played this song enough to trust that his hands knew the chords without having to question it.
Tears slowly slipped down your cheeks as you joined in with him at the chorus. You could feel the music all the way to your soul, patching up something that was so broken within you, and yet at the same time breaking other parts away. Fixing and breaking.
You were on your feet the second the song was over, dashing towards the door. The second you opened your eyes and saw the way that Rooster was looking at you, you knew you had to leave. Because you were getting too close to him, too personal. Too comfortable and feeling too safe.
He ran after you, getting to you before you could even reach your car. You wanted to curse his long legs and fast strides. He didn’t even give you a fighting chance before his arms were around you, keeping you from running further.
You went limp in his arms, allowing the tears to openly flow. He dropped his cheek to the top of your head, trying to comfort you the best he could. He learned a few tricks over the last couple of months. He knew he could get you to stop pretty quickly, but he had the feeling that you just needed to let all of this out. So he let you cry and he held you as you did.
“I can’t keep doing this,” You mumbled, tears finally starting to dry, “I can’t keep expecting you to be here at every turn to catch me.”
His head shakes, “That’s why I’m here. That’s my whole job, to catch you when you fall. Be here to pick up up when you do. That’s what I promised Kurtis I would do.”
Your eyes meet his. He’s serious, you know he is. He’ll be there time and time again because he’s a good man. Too good of a man. He’d put his own feelings towards Kurtis’ death aside as long as it meant being there for you, just like he’d been doing for the last few months. You loved him for it, even though it broke your heart even more.
“Who’s there to catch you?” You question, holding onto his arms.
He shrugged, “I can catch myself.”
Your heart broke open. You felt like you were laid bare in front of him now. If he looked close enough he might be able to see into your soul. Somehow standing in the middle of the parking lot of The Hard Deck felt more personal than all of the time he spent in your home.
“You shouldn’t have to catch yourself,” You argue softly, “This should be a two way street. You should be allowed to miss him too.”
“I do miss him,” He responds almost immediately, “I just do it on my own time.”
“Miss him with me,” You plead, “Feel this with me. Don’t let me be the only one losing their mind. Please.”
He then nods, holding you closely. Something changed between the two of you tonight. The lines blurred a little. Friend into something else. More than just induced by grief, but bonded by something other than trauma. You held tightly to him, trying to convey in a simple hug that he wasn’t alone anymore. That he had someone in his corner, like he’d been the person to be in yours.
“I should call an uber,” You said, finally backing away, “I can’t go back in there tonight. Too many people are looking at me with their pity eyes.”
“You learn to stop noticing it,” He shrugged, “But, I can drive you. It’s not too far out of my way, anyway, and I don’t feel like drinking anymore.”
“You don’t have to do that,” You shake your head again.
“Just let me go close out my tab so Penny doesn’t have my balls,” He forces a laugh, “I’ll be right back.”
He gets a few steps away before stopping and reaching into his pocket. He turns around and throws a set of keys at you, “Go start her up. I’ll be out in just a minute.”
You stare down at the set of keys as he makes his way into the bar. He never let anyone touch his keys. In all of the years that you’d known him, and the even longer time Kurtis knew him, Rooster only let Kurtis start his precious Bronco once. And even then that’s only because Bradley wasn’t cleared to drive after an accident in PT but couldn’t leave his Bronco on base. Something stirred in your chest, a sort of feeling you couldn’t exactly place. He trusted you with his Bronco. He trusted you with the keys. He trusted you. Simply put.
You’re still standing there when he comes back out less than five minutes later. He has a small smile on his face, although you’re sure it doesn’t reach his eyes. But he’s trying, just like you are. You’re both trying the best you can.
“I thought I said you could start her up?” He questions, nudging you towards the car.
“Felt wrong,” You managed to shrug, “I haven’t even held the keys before.”
“Well, keep being nice and I might let you drive her one day.”
His sly wink made you smile. A real smile. The kind of smile you hadn’t felt in months. Not since the morning before you got the news. Kurtis was making jokes in the kitchen and you laughed so hard your body shook. But now, it was a quiet smile, small in feature, but big in meaning.
Rooster smiled knowing you were really smiling, and grabbed your hand. Together, you made your way towards the Bronco and a few phase of your friendship. One where you leaned on one another, instead of it being one sided.

Chairlift Confessional
(a Fresh Powder in the Pine Trees story)
.
The sky is grey and overcast, diffuse light dimming with the approaching dusk as they ride Phoenix Mountain Express up the backside of the peak. The night skiing lights will kick on soon to illuminate the slopes and extend the ski day. This is the third day this week that Wei Ying and Lan Zhan have gone to the backside to wind down after lessons have closed. It’s a new habit, a good habit, if you ask Wei Ying. Lan Zhan doesn’t seem to hate it, either.
The lift rocks to a stop and Wei Ying leans back. It’s not abnormal for the lift to pause for someone struggling to get on or off the chair, but as the silence stretches, Wei Ying realizes this is some other problem entirely. Whether mechanical or human doesn’t really matter. They’re going to be sitting here for a while, it seems.
The wind is soft through the trees, blowing powder off in small flurries. It’s cold enough that both Wei Ying and Lan Zhan have their faces covered, Lan Zhan with his actual brandname BUFF in midnight-blue merino wool, and Wei Ying with his 69-cent red bandana.
The quiet is peaceful and, normally, Wei Ying might be content to just sit here with Lan Zhan and enjoy the company. He likes not having to fill the silence. Likes just being in the same space and not feeling like too little or too much. But there’s… something that’s been brewing between them and Wei Ying can’t think of a better opportunity to have this conversation.
Still, it’s not easy to break the moment. Wei Ying kicks snow off his board as it dangles from his left foot before propping it back up on the toes of his right boot, preventing too much torque on his knee. There’s plenty of room for it on the four-seat chair with just the two of them. But it’s really just a procrastination. One that Lan Zhan seems to pick up on as he quirks his head to the side in question.
“Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying starts, “we’re friends, right?”
“Mn.”
“Yeah? Good, good.” He leans forward on the restraint bar and ignores whatever look Lan Zhan gives him about it. “It’s more than that, though,” he says, “right? I’m not alone in this?”
“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan says, somewhat muffled by the buff but sounding uncomfortable, or maybe just tired. But it’s not a no. It’s definitely not a no.
“Okay, so I’m not totally off base,” says Wei Ying with a smile Lan Zhan won’t be able to see, but he’ll be able to hear. “Are we gonna do something about it, then?”
Lan Zhan sighs and shakes his head, “Like what?”
Wei Ying thinks he can hear something like a smile in Lan Zhan’s voice, too. It spurs him on.
"Oh, come on,” he says, teasing, “You've wanted to fuck me since you saw me with my sleeves rolled up, teching a pair of skis."
"No," says Lan Zhan with an abject dismissal that takes Wei Ying by surprise.
"No?"
"No,” he confirms, and then, “I've wanted to fuck you since you told me I had a ski pole stuck up my ass and inquired as to whether the basket was still attached."
Wei Ying feels his eyes go comically wide, "Lan Zhan!" He isn’t sure if he’s reacting more to the profanity or the confession. Both are delightful.
“Mn.”
It’s a smug confirmation and Wei Ying is living for it.
“But I was such an ass!”
“There are,” Lan Zhan pauses, considering his words, twisting his poles with his fingers, “solutions to that problem.”
Wei Ying really hopes he means that the way he thinks he means that.
“And yet, here we are,” he says, gesturing vaguely to the mountain and present time, “almost two months later and…?”
Lan Zhan’s voice turns serious, "You're my subordinate, Wei Ying."
"I am not. I mean, I could be if that's how you like to play."
"You are. You're my employee."
"We haven't been boss-and-employee for months now."
"We have." He’s calm, serene as always, but the words are heavy, emphatic.
Wei Ying can’t accept it. He turns to face Lan Zhan as fully as he can, lifting his knee onto the chair. "You follow all of your employees under the rope?" he asks, voice goading.
"I --"
"You let all of your employees bully you into a three hour park session?"
"Wei Ying."
"Every Thursday."
Lan Zhan shakes his head again. "That's not the point," he says quietly.
"What's not the point?"
"Don't you want to run Juniors' Club?"
That is not where Wei Ying thought this was going. "You think I'm trying to get a promotion by fucking you?"
"I don--"
"Or by you fucking me,” he amends, turning it into a joke. “Really, either way, I'm easy."
"Wei Ying."
The chastisement in Lan Zhan’s voice is sharper this time, so Wei Ying stops. Changes tactics. Narrows his eyes, not that Lan Zhan can see them.
"Is this a rules thing?"
"It is an HR violation," says Lan Zhan, like he’s finally back on solid ground.
Wei Ying scoffs, "Your brother is the owner. I don't think you'll get fired over it."
"I won't."
The implication is obvious, but Wei Ying actually hadn’t considered that possibility. It stops him short. "Oh."
"Which would be ridiculous,” says Lan Zhan, suddenly more aggravated than Wei Ying has ever seen him, “because it would be my impropriety, my abuse of power, not yours."
"I mean, if abuse of power is what you're into…" Wei Ying tries, weakly.
"Wei Ying."
"Oh my god,” Wei Ying laughs then, at them, at the whole situation, “lighten up!"
He’s not sure how he can tell with the goggles and buff in the way, but he’s almost positive Lan Zhan is glaring at him.
"Fine,” he shrugs his shoulders, “I'll quit."
"No!"
Wei Ying didn’t expect a response quite that strong. He isn’t really sure what to do with it. "What?” he says, deflecting, “I'm sure I can find something else."
"You love this job,” says Lan Zhan, voice heavy with emotion in a way Wei Ying can’t really parse. “I will not allow you to quit. I'll… I'll refuse your resignation."
That, at least, makes Wei Ying smile. "I'm a carnival worker, Lan Zhan, I don't think you can refuse my resignation."
"You would not do that to Wen Yuan and Lan Jingyi, would you?"
Wei Ying pauses, sucks his teeth. The argument is valid. Unfair, but valid. It’s a trump card he didn’t know Lan Zhan had, but he’s right. He huffs out a sigh, fogging his goggles slightly.
"Fine! Okay, okay.”
He scrubs his hand, uselessly, over his goggles in frustration. He wants to see Lan Zhan’s face. Needs to see his eyes where he keeps all of his more subtle emotions. Wei Ying can read him so easily through his eyes. This conversation is too much for how covered they are, but then, maybe that’s better.
“Okay, so, what?” he asks, exasperated, “We wait until the season's over?"
"Are you not planning on coming back next year?"
"Well, sure, but if we start something in the off season, it's not an abuse of power, now is it?"
Lan Zhan considers this argument. Mulls it over in silence. He nods, seeming to find it acceptable.
"So we wait," Lan Zhan says carefully.
"Yeah! It's January, already. So like, three more months?"
"Three months."
"How hard can three months be, right?" Even as he says it, he knows he’s full of shit.
When the chair kicks back into motion, Wei Ying looks off to the side. The lights are on now and the closer trees have purple and gold Mardi Gras beads dangling from their branches. He breathes loudly in their silence and thinks. Three months is no time at all. Three months is forever.
He glances over to Lan Zhan, face still guarded by goggles and dark blue gaiter. He wants to reach over to him, to take his hand, to steal his poles. Something. Anything. He keeps his hands tight on the bar, taps more snow off his board.
It’s doable, he tells himself. They can manage this. They can still be friends, he can keep dragging Lan Zhan out of his comfort zone and pushing him into spending more time with the instructors. Good distractions for both of them. There’s just a new boundary. Wei Ying can respect that boundary. There are, after all, lines even he won’t cross.
This, their after-work sessions and easy friendship, this can be enough.
He reaches over and steals one of Lan Zhan’s poles.
“For the flats,” he says, smile bright in his voice.
“You’re not even strapped in yet,” says Lan Zhan, stealing it back.
Wei Ying is pretty sure he hears a smile there, too.
It’s enough.

Next part
“Who are you?” The pilot's head snaps up at the sound of your voice. He had been sitting at your bedside for the past four days, waiting for you to wake up. There had been a terrible accident during training, one that sent you crashing into the ground. You couldn’t eject. No matter how hard you pulled on the handles, there was nothing you could do to save yourself. Hours later, the search and rescue team found you buried under debris and unconscious. You had been rushed to the hospital on base and immediately treated. You had numerous broken bones, a punctured lung, and a brain bleed. The doctors weren't even sure you were going to make it.
You were in surgery for hours. The Dagger Squad spent the whole time in the waiting room, all anxious about whether you would be okay. Rooster and Phoenix refused to go home, insisting that they would stay by Jake’s side until you woke up. It had nearly been a week, and the longest either of them had left was for a quick shower or to pick up food.
Now, as you were waking up in a room merely 20 feet away, Bradley and Natasha were resting on each other as they slept.
Jake stared at you with wide eyes. He had been waiting to hear your voice for days, and now that you were talking to him, he couldn’t believe it. Your wide eyes watched him carefully as he shot up out of his seat. There was a wide smile on his face, one that quickly disappeared when he realized what you said.
He spoke your name softly as he slowly lowered himself back into the chair. “Do you recognize me?” Horror spread through him as you shook your head. “Excuse me.” Jake murmured before he shot off his chair and darted out of the room. You stared after him, confusion written across your face.
Laboured breaths fell quickly from his lips as Jake leaned against the wall and tossed his head back. Rooster and Phoenix shot out of their chairs at the sight of Jake. “What’s going on?” The blond pilot could hardly hear Rooster’s words through the ringing in his ears. “Jake? Is she awake?” Jake heaved a large sigh.
Humming quietly, Jake peeled his eyes open and did his best to not let any tears fall. Phoenix’s next question had him choking out a humourless laugh. “‘Then what’s the problem?’” He pushed himself off the wall. “You wanna know what the fucking problem is Phoenix? The problem is that when she woke up, she had no goddamn idea who I was.” Everyone fell silent at Jake’s words.
You were always the life of the party. You were always the one to lift everyone’s spirits with your presence alone. Wherever Jake was feeling down, you never failed to cheer him up. You were the single best thing in his life. He never could have asked for anyone better. But now, you couldn’t even remember your husband’s name.
“I’m so sorry,” Phoenix spoke quietly setting a hand on Jake’s forearm to try and comfort him. She couldn’t imagine the pain he was feeling right now. The two of you had only been married for a few months, and now you had no idea that you were ever married in the first place. The tears that he had been trying so hard to hold in were now rolling down his cheeks, dampening the black fabric of his T-shirt. She and Rooster wound their arms around the shaking pilot. “God, Jake. I’m so sorry.”
Just then a nurse stepped out of the room beside them. “Mr. Seresin?” Jake sniffled and pulled back. “If you would please come with me.” She headed back into the room, Jake trailing behind him. Your husband exhaled shakily at the expression on your face. He could tell that you were confused and scared. It ripped him to shreds knowing that he couldn’t comfort you right now.
“Mrs?” The elderly woman started, moving to stand next to you. You sat up, glancing between her and the strange man at the door. “Do you remember your name?” You nodded, giving her your name. The sound of your voice made Jake sigh. He had missed hearing your voice and knowing that you could at least remember your name was a relief. “And can you tell me what year it is?” That was when Jake’s heart sank for the second time in the past ten minutes. You thought that it was three years ago. That explained why you had no idea who he was.
The older woman smiled at Jake gently, seeing the pain in his eyes. “I'll leave you two alone. The doctor should be with you shortly.” Then she stepped out of the room, silence filling it seconds later.
“So…” You started, trying to fill the awkward silence. “Who are you?” Your voice was quieter now, less scared than it was before. Sighing, the pilot took a seat beside you in the hard plastic seat beside your bed. He gave you his name and watched your face carefully to see if you recognized it. You could tell that he was expecting you to know it, but when you didn’t, all you could do was give him a sad smile. “How do we know each other?”
Instantly, Jake began to think over your entire relationship, ever since when you met to now. The two of you met at the beach. The second Jake saw you, he couldn’t help but drop some corny pick-up line to try and get you to look his way. You had giggled at his cheesy line and a few hours later agreed to go out with him. From there the two of you had grown inseparable.
“We met at the beach,” He started, a barely-there fond smile on his face. “I made some corny joke and then we, uh,” Pausing, Jake debated on whether or not to tell you that the two of you had been together for nearly three years. “And then we became friends. We’ve been nearly inseparable ever since.”
You smiled at the thought. “Can you tell me more?” You liked hearing him talk. For some reason, listening to Jake’s soft voice as he spoke about how the two of you met had you melting against the scratchy hospital sheets.
Jake nodded. “Of course, Darlin’,” The pet name sent butterflies fluttering around your stomach. Why, you weren’t quite sure. “You were on leave and I had just been stationed in Miami for six months,” You smiled, trying to picture what he was describing. “After that, you went to Lemoore and I went up to Virginia. We still kept talking though,” There was a faint smile on his face as he thought about the last few years with you. “A few months ago we both came to North Island. And now we're here.” The pilot wrapped up his short summary just before your doctor walked into the room.
The older man smiled gently at the two of you, glasses perched on his nose as he glanced down at your file. “Mrs.,” He started, pausing when Jake shook his head subtly. “Miss,” The doctor started again. “It appears that due to the crash, you have sustained mild brain damage. This would explain your memory loss,” You nodded, listening intently to the doctor's words. “In time, you should hopefully regain most, if not all of your memories. However, we cannot be sure how long this will take. It could take anywhere from a few months to a few years,” Swallowing, you nodded. “We’d like to keep you in the hospital for the next few days to monitor your progress.” You nodded once more, yawning slightly as your doctor finished talking.
He stepped out of the room, allowing you and Jake to continue your conversation. “Would you mind if I slept?” Your words were quiet as you yawned once more. There was a soft smile on Jake’s face as he nodded.
Standing from the uncomfortable plastic chair, Jake stepped toward the door. “I’ll be in the hall if you need me.” And then he was gone. You weren’t sure why his words made you feel calm and protected or why the look he gave you before he left had your stomach fluttering. Your eyes slowly closed and the last thing on your mind before you let sleep pull you under was Jake. Even though you couldn’t remember Jake, you could have sworn that the two of you had a bond stronger than what friends had.
Jake knew that it was unlikely that you would call out for him. However, he couldn’t help but hope that even though you couldn’t remember him, you would feel like you could trust him.
When Jake stepped out of the room he was greeted by the sight of your doctor. The door closed softly behind him. “Mr. Seresin,” The older man started, a sombre look on his face. “I’m afraid I have some more unfortunate news.”

“Another date?” Hangman asked as he sunk the nine ball into the corner pocket. “Yeah.” I said as I leaned on the pool table next to him. “Isn’t this like the sixth one this week?” He asked and I smacked his arm. “It’s the third this month.” I said and he chuckled. “I just hope this guy realizes what a catch he has.” He flirted and I couldn’t keep the blush from creeping up my cheeks. “Well, he seems to. He’s really sweet.” I said and he nodded. “Well, as long as you’re happy.” He said and I nodded. “We’ll see.” I said. “Who knows, he may turn out to be a creep.” I said as I pushed off the pool table. “He won’t be if he knows what’s good for him.” I turned to find Rooster coming back from the bar. “Well aren’t you sweet Rooster.” I said and he chuckled, pulling me into a side hug. “Only for you.” He said and I laughed. “Well, five a.m. comes early. So I'm headed home.” I told them. “We’ll see you later.” Coyote said and I waved as Hangman took his last shot. “Bye.” He said and waved. “Bye.” I turned to Rooster who was smiling down at me. “Let me know when you get home?” He asked and I nodded. “I will.” I stood on my toes and kissed his cheek. “Bye Rooster.” I said before walking out.
The next evening was my date and I had a blast. My back was pressed against my front door while my date, Mark held me against him. His lips were on mine as my arms wrapped around his shoulders. I moaned as one hand drifted down towards my ass, grabbing a handful and pulling my pelvis flush against his. “Alright now.” I said as I pulled away. “Sorry. I got a little carried away.” He said, a blush on his cheeks. “It’s okay.” I told him. “Look, I had an amazing time tonight, and I’d love it if you'd let me take you out again.” I nodded. “I’d like that, Mark.” He smiled at me. “Awesome. There’s this farmers market on Sundays downtown, would you want to go?” He asked and I nodded. “I’d love to.” I said. “Goodnight, beautiful.” He said as he kissed my cheek. “Goodnight.” With that I stepped inside and locked the door behind me. I squealed as I made my way to my room. That was one of the best dates I’ve ever been on! I thought as I fell onto my bed. Suddenly my phone rang and I looked to see Phoenix calling. “Oh my god.” I answered. “That good?” She asked and I nodded, putting the phone on speaker and unzipping my dress. “So good! He even asked me on another date for Sunday!” I said and she sighed. “Let’s just hope he keeps his word unlike the other two. Still haven’t heard from either of them?” I shook my head. “No, and I’m not worried about them. They’re dicks for standing me up!” I said and she hummed. “And on the second date. Like, if they didn’t wanna go out, they shouldn’t have asked.” She said and I nodded. “Right! But who cares about them? I am perfectly happy to go on another date with Mark!” I squealed.
Phoenix and I talked for about an hour that night. By the time Sunday came around I was practically vibrating with excitement, until he completely stopped replying to me. I was dressed and ready to go, deciding to call him one last time and it went straight to voicemail. So I called Phoenix. “Are you busy?” I asked as tears filled my eyes. “The team and I were about to meet at the beach for dog fight football. Are you not on your date?” She asked. “He ghosted me, Phoenix.” I said and it went quiet. “I’m over it. Meet us at the beach. You are going to have a good day! Forget this fucker!” I sighed. “Okay.” I replied. “Meet us behind The Hard Deck in half an hour.” I nodded. “Thank you, Phoenix.” With that I got ready and headed down to the beach. I saw everyone setting up and Jake pulling out a football. “There she is!” He called when he saw me walking towards them. I gave them a small smile as Rooster stepped towards me, gently taking my bag. “Hey, Phoenix told us what happened.” He said and I nodded. “You don’t deserve that.” His hand came up, resting on my cheek and I smiled at him. “Thank you, Rooster.” I said, taking his hand from my face and squeezing it. “Come on!” Jake called, rushing over and taking my hand. “You’re just in time for a game.” He said and I smiled, following him.
I decided to take a break from dating for a while. It was depressing to get stood up so many times, so I decided a break would be nice. I went out with friends, focused on work, and most importantly made time for myself. Jake made it a point to spend time with me, making sure I never got too lonely. We were walking along the beach behind The Hard Deck when he turned to me. “So, I know you’ve been taking a break from dating.” He said and I hummed and nodded. “But I was wondering…” His fingers intertwined with mine and he squeezed my hand. “If you would go on a date with me?” I was shocked. “Oh, Jake. I-” “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked.” He said and I stopped him as he tried to let my hand go. “No, I just… I didn’t think you felt that way about me.” I said and he smiled at me, taking a step closer, invading my space. “How could I not?” He asked, looking down at me. “I didn’t say anything because you were going on all these dates and for the most part you seemed happy. I didn’t want to ruin that or our friendship.” He said and I smiled up at him. “So… would you go on a date with me?” He asked and I nodded, looking up at him through my lashes. “I’d love to.”
We went back inside and he immediately went to the bar while I joined our friends. "You guys were out there for a while." Bradley said as I stood next to him at the pool table. "Yeah." It was a quiet answer and I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. "What's that look about?" He asked as he smiled down at me. "He asked me on a date." I said as I dragged my finger along the pool table. "And what did you say?" He asked. "I said yes. At least Hangman will be honest with me if he doesn't want to go out after the first date. It'll be pretty hard for him to ghost me." I said and chuckled. "Yeah, pretty hard." Bradley said as Jake handed me a drink. As soon as Jake’s arm went around my waist Bradley walked off. "What's up with him?" Jake asked and I shrugged. "I don't know. I just told him we were going on a date and he got quiet." I said and Jake chuckled. "Bet he has the hots for you." He said as he looked down at me and wiggled his brows. I shrugged before Jake took my hand and pulled me towards the dart board. "Maybe."
A casual date? No dress? Where the hell is this man taking me? I thought as I slid on some bell bottom jeans. Just as I finished pulling on my shirt my doorbell rang "Shit!" I cursed. I grabbed the large knitted sweater off my bed before rushing downstairs. I slipped it on before swinging the door open. "Hi" I said as I took in the sight of him. Dark jeans and a white button up with his nice boots. "You look beautiful." His eyes met mine as I blushed. "Thank you. Are those for me?" I asked motioning towards the bouquet of roses in his hands. "Oh." He handed them to me. "Wanna come in for a minute?" He simply smiled and nodded. He came in as I walked into my kitchen to find a vase. “So, what are the plans tonight? Seeing as I wasn’t allowed to wear a dress.”
I grabbed his hand and pulled him with me as I ran towards the entrance. Jake took me to all the booths trying to win me something and we had no luck until we came up to the booth that had balloons pinned up and darts to throw at them. His fingers were intertwined with mine as my free hand was wrapped around his bicep as we walked. We almost passed the booth when I stopped him. “What?” He asked and I pointed. “You’re the master at darts.” He smirked and nodded before pulling us into the line. “Which one do you want, darlin’?” He leaned down, whispering in my ear. I grinned and looked up at him. “I want that Koala.” I said as I pointed to the gray stuffed animal. “It’s yours.” He said. “Step right up!” The attendee yelled. “One round, please.” Jake said and the guy nodded, handing him three darts. “You pop three balloons and you get a prize of your choice.” Jake nodded and grabbed the first dart before immediately tossing it and popping the balloon. “No cheating mister.” I said as I put my hand in front of his eyes. He tossed the second dart and it was dead on, popping a second balloon. People had started to gather around us, watching him. “Alright then.” I said and stood in front of him, a smirk on my face. “Eyes on me.” I said and he smirked. He lined up the dart, his eyes on mine before he surprised me. He swooped down and kissed me gently before tossing the dart. I was so surprised that I missed the sound of the balloon popping behind me. The crowd cheered and he pulled away.
“Come on, let’s get on the ferris wheel.” He said, pulling me towards it when I stopped him. “Oh, Jake, no.” I said and he looked at me confused. “Why?” He asked, turning to me and taking me into his arms. My eyes flashed to the top and when I looked back at him, he was grinning at me. “Don’t worry, darlin’. I’d never let you fall.” That was all it took to ease my anxiety. I clutched the stuffed koala for dear life as Jake had his arm over my shoulder. Once we were in the chair, Jake pulled me close and pressed his lips to my temple. “I didn’t know you were afraid of heights.” He said. I nodded and took some deep breaths. “I have been since I was a kid.” I said and he chuckled. “So I guess taking you up in a plane is a no go.” He said. “I love flying.” I said as I turned to him and he raised a brow. “It’s just being up high, like this, that bothers me.” I said and he chuckled, and kissed my cheek. “I got you.” He said. By the end of the night, Jake dropped me off at my house and walked me up to my door. “I had an amazing time.” I told him. “Me too.” We stared at each other for a minute before I reached up. My hand rested on his neck and I pulled him into a kiss. His hands rested on my waist as the stuffed koala was squished between us. My fingers worked their way up into his hair and his fingers pressed into my waist as he turned us and pushed my back into my door. “Fuck.” He muttered, pulling away. “What?” I asked, worried I did something wrong. “I just… I just don’t wanna fuck this up.” He said. “You won’t.” I said, hands coming up to his face. “No, I will. I just, I wanna take this slow. I don’t want to mess this up and lose you.” He said as he cradled my face this time. “Okay. We’ll take it slow.” I agreed and he smiled before he kissed me again. “Let me take you out again on Sunday?” I immediately nodded. “I’m borrowing Mav’s plane on Sunday and I thought we could fly up to San Francisco for dinner?” My eyes widened and I smiled at him. “Really?” I asked excitedly and he chuckled. “Yeah.” I tossed my arms around his shoulder again and kissed him. “I’d love to!” I replied. “Good, I’ll be here at eleven to pick you up and then we’ll head out to Mav’s hangar.”
I could hardly sleep on Saturday night. So excited for Sunday. I was up early and even got ready early that morning. I slipped on a lilac colored skater dress and some white wedges before I sat on my couch to wait. Soon eleven came and nothing, then eleven-thirty, then twelve-thirty before I knew it, it was three o’clock and I was pissed. I quickly dialed Natasha’s number and paced behind my couch. “How was the flight?” She asked. “It didn’t happen.” I said and she gasped. “Why?” He asked. “He never showed up! He ghosted me just like everyone else!” I said. “That doesn’t sound like Jake.” She said and I nodded. “No, it doesn’t. So you know what. I’m done with these fucking games. I’m going over there and I’m confronting his ass.” I snapped. I grabbed my purse and stormed out of the house. “Let me know what happens?” She asked and I nodded. “I will.” With that I hung up and drove off to Jake’s house. Once there I got out and stormed up his front porch. “Jake!” I called out, knocking harshly on the door. After a few beats there was nothing so I knocked again. “Jake!” Once again, nothing. I reached for the door handle, expecting it to be locked, but I was surprised when it wasn’t. I decided to let myself in and was immediately hit with a putrid smell, making me gag. I covered my nose and walked farther in.
Jake never struck me as gross or even messy. But this smell had to be something dead. I walked upstairs, searching for him and came up with nothing. I headed back downstairs and turned towards the kitchen but I stopped when I saw something on the floor. It was a droplet of something and when I rounded the corner there were splatters everywhere. I flipped on the light and saw it. Red, dried blood. I gasped. It looked like a murder scene. My heart raced in my chest, thudding in my ears. I could feel my blood pumping in my neck and I felt nauseous. I stepped farther into the kitchen, cautious of what I might find. It was everywhere. On the walls, the island, the fridge, the stove. I dragged my eyes around the room until I caught sight of Jake’s boot covered foot. “Jake?!” As I rounded the corner I stopped and rammed myself back into the counter. A scream escaped me as I looked down at his dead body. His abdomen was slashed open laterally, entrails pulled across the floor. His eyes were cold and dead as he stared up at the ceiling. His normally perfect hair was all messed up and he would hate it. I stared for who knows how long before sprinting out of the house.
I called nine one one and managed to tell the operator what happened through my gasps and cries. Once I was off the phone with him, I called Natasha. “Hey, did you-” “He’s dead.” I spat out as I cried. “Wh-what?” She asked. “Nat, it’s awful. There-there’s blood everywhere and his body-” I gasped out, trying to catch my breath. “His body-” “I’m on my way.” She said and hung up. I stood on the front porch before suddenly an officer arrived, then another, and another then paramedics. I was getting question after question when a bright blue Bronco pulled up. Nat jumped out but Bradley beat her over to me. I tossed my arms around him, squeezing him as his arms wrapped around me. “I got you.” He muttered into my hair. “Oh god.” I cried. After a minute he let me go and I turned to Nat who just stared at the house. “Nat?” I asked and she looked at me, tears streaming down her face. “Can we see him?” She asked and I shook my head. “No. You don’t want to.” The words escaped me just as the coroner's van pulled up, causing Nat and I to both break out into sobs. We held each other, and Bradley held us as they rolled his body out of the house. Suddenly I heard my name called and I turned to find a detective. “May we speak with you?” I nodded and they stepped closer. “I’m Detective Booth and this is Detective Lane. Where were you before you found Mr.Seresin’s body?” Booth asked and I furrowed my brows. “I was at my house, waiting for him. We had a date today.” I said and they nodded, writing it down. “And where have you been the last two days?” He asked. “After our date Friday night I went to bed and I was home all day yesterday.” Detective Lane nodded. “And what were you doing at your house yesterday?” He asked. “Um, cleaning. Can I ask why I’m getting the third degree?” I asked and they both sighed. “Do you know Justin Wade, Riley Hammil, and Mark Thompson?” They asked and I nodded. “I went on dates with all of them.” Detective Booth nodded, writing something down. “Was there ever any arguments or disagreements with these men? Any hostility?” I shook my head at Detective Lane’s question. “Are you saying they did something?” Bradley asked, coming to stand next to me. “No, we’re here to ask if she did something.” I raised my brows in surprise. “Me?” They both nodded. “Are you aware that you are the last person to see these men alive?”
“Y-you mean they’re dead?” I asked and they nodded. “All three of their bodies were found three days ago, tossed in the river down by North Island Air Base.” I started shaking. “They had multiple stab wounds and were dead before their assailant was finished with them.” I looked at Bradley who looked at me wide eyed. “I-I didn’t do anything to them. I never would be able to get the upper hand on them.” They were all tall and well built men. If I tried to kill them they easily could’ve stopped me. “Unless you seduced them and in a haze of lust you stabbed them.” Detective Booth said. “Excuse you?” I asked, tears welling in my eyes. “Men become slow to react when it comes to sex. You could’ve gotten a few swings in before they could react.” My mouth opened and closed a few times, not sure what to say other than, ‘I didn’t do it.’ “Now, wait a minute. I know her very well. She’d never kill anyone.” Nat defended. “You think you know her.” Detective Lane said. “We ask that you come to the station with us for questioning.” Detective Booth said. If I said no it’d make me look guilty, so I just nodded. “Take my car back home?” I asked and Bradley nodded. “It’s evidence. It’ll have to stay here.” I sighed and looked back at my friends. “Nevermind.”
I cried through most of the questioning. Terrified that somehow they’d pin me for murder when in reality I just thought they ghosted me. When they let me out, I was surprised to find Bradley there, waiting for me. I immediately rushed over to him, wrapping my arms around him. “Hold me?” I asked and he immediately squeezed me to him. “You’re okay.” He said. He held me for a few minutes before he led me out to the bronco. “You want to go home?” He asked and I nodded. I just wanted a shower and to go to bed. Bradley took me home, kindly staying with me while I showered as I was scared to be alone, but he did have to leave eventually, even if I had to push him out the door. He was hell bent on staying but I couldn’t inconvenience him and I didn’t want to grow dependent on him. The following Tuesday I went to talk to a lawyer. “All they have on you is that you’re the last one to see these four men alive.” He said and I nodded. “There is no DNA, no evidence of any kind that you killed them. But that doesn’t mean that they won’t try their hardest to pin it on you.” A sob escaped me at his words. “Could they really?” I asked and he nodded. “Chances of that are slim, but it’s not impossible.” He said. Soon we wrapped up our meeting and I immediately rushed out of the office and drove off towards the one person who could offer me comfort right now.
I parked next to the bronco and got out. Before I could even make it up onto the porch, the door swung open and I immediately attached myself to Bradley. “Woah, what happened?” He asked, immediately wrapping his arms around me. “They think I did it!” I cried as I buried my face into his chest. “What?” I could hear the shock in his voice as he ran a hand through my hair. “They’re going to try to pin me for the murders! I didn’t do it, Bradley! I swear I didn’t!” I pulled away and looked up at him. “Hey,” He said, taking my face in his hands. “I know you didn’t. You would never.” He opened the door wider and rushed me inside. “You want some coffee or something?” He asked and I nodded. “Coffee would be great.” I said. He smiled down at me before gently taking my hand and leading me into his kitchen. We sat in silence as he brewed the coffee and I sat on a barstool and waited. Once it was done he made it exactly the way I like it before sitting next to me. “Okay.” He said as I took a sip. “Tell me what happened.” So I did. I told him all about the questioning and the talk with my lawyer. “Bradley, I could spend life in prison if I can’t prove my innocence.” I cried and suddenly he stood, sweeping me up into his arms and sitting on the couch with me, holding me close. “Look at me.” He demanded, so I did. “I will do whatever it takes to prove your innocence. You won’t go to prison, I won’t let that happen.” I stared into those brown eyes for a minute before burying my face in his chest, crying myself to exhaustion.
When I woke up, it was dark outside. I vaguely remembered the room I was in. It was the spare bedroom Bradley had down in his basement. Bradley had hosted a few parties where I had too much to drink and I liked sleeping down here because the bathroom was close and if I puked then I wouldn’t disturb people with my retching. I sat up, flicking on the lamp and tossing the blanket off of me and stretching. I looked at the clock on the bedside table and saw it was eight-thirty. I must’ve been really tired. I stood up from the bed and heard metal rattling. I furrowed my brows, looking around before I looked down. My eyes widened at the metal cuff on my ankle. I sat back down, pulling my leg up onto the bed and pulling on it. I tried messing with the lock but it wouldn’t budge. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I stood, walking over to the basement stairs. “Bradley!” I yelled and not even two seconds later the door swung open. “Hang on, I’m coming. You woke up just in time, I made dinner.” I could smell Mrs. Bradshaw’s chicken noodle soup from here. Bradley always made some and dropped it off when I was sick. “Bradley, what-what happened?” I asked and he furrowed his brows before I shook my ankle. His eyebrows shot up. “Oh! That’s so you won’t leave.” He said as if it was the most normal statement in the world. “So I won’t leave? Bradley I have to leave at some point. I have to work, I have to take care of my house.” I said and he looked to me confused as he set the tray of food on the coffee table.
“Why would you want to leave?” He asked, taking a step closer. “I’m going to take care of you, baby. You can’t leave. Not now.” His hands gently cradled my face and fear grew in the pit of my stomach. This wasn’t the sweet and kind Bradley I knew, this one is crazy. “Bradley. I want to go home.” I said, tears gathering in my eyes. “You are home.” “No I'm not!” “YES YOU ARE!” He yelled at me and I jumped back in surprise. He saw my reaction and took a deep breath before letting it out. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled at you.” He said before smiling at me. “Come on, why don’t you eat?” He asked, leading me to the couch that sat before the bed. “Sit down and I’ll be right back to join you.” He said before handing me the remote and disappearing upstairs. I stared at the remote in my hand before my eyes drifted off to the soup. What the hell is going on? I thought to myself. Soon Bradley came back downstairs and sat next to me. “Here.” He said, taking the remote. He turned on Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince. “I know it’s your favorite. Come on, eat.” He said, grabbing the bowl and holding it out to me. “I-I’m not hungry.” I said as I took the bowl from his hand. “Baby.” His tone was dark, scary even as I looked at him. “Eat your dinner.” He said, gripping my wrist and squeezing. Fear washed over me and I just nodded before eating the food.
After dinner Bradley disappeared upstairs and I disappeared into the bathroom to puke up everything I just ate. I had to get out of here. I couldn’t stay here. I stood on the bed, looking out the small window that sat above it. I pushed and pushed on it, attempting to open but it wouldn’t budge. “It’s sealed shut.” I gasped, turning around to see Bradley standing at the foot of the bed. “Bra-Bradley… I just-” “You just what?” He asked, coming around the bed. “You were trying to leave.” He said, grabbing my hand and yanking me off the bed. “No! No, I wasn’t.” He just chuckled. “I’m not stupid, baby. You were. Why?” He asked. “Is it because I’m not Seresin?” The name alone brought tears to my eyes. “What are you talking about?” I asked him. He walked over to the dresser, reaching in and pulling out a manilla envelope. He came back over, opening it and dumping out dozens of pictures. Some were me on my dates, some were me in my own house and a few from me at work. But the most pictures were from my date with Jake. There were so many of them. “Why have you been taking pictures of me?!” I squealed, picking some up and looking at them. I picked up one that made my stomach turn. It was me, naked in my bedroom. “Because I love you, baby.” He leaned over me, tucking some hair behind my ear before he pressed his lips to my neck. On instinct I turned around, my hand connecting with his cheek before he harshly grabbed me. “Is that how you treat me? After saving you from them?!” He yelled, rubbing his cheek. “From who?!”
“Them!” He yelled, pointing at the photos. “They all only wanted one thing from you. But I see your worth, I want to give you everything! Yet you went on dates with all of them!” He yelled out and I stood there in shock. “Bradley, did you-” “Kill them? Yes.” I was going to be sick again and I sank onto the bed. “You should’ve seen how easy the first three were.” He stepped closer and I crawled back on the bed, trying to get away from him. “They begged for their lives.” His face was in mine as the tears started. “Seresin was a challenge.” At that I lunged, shoving him back into the dresser. He groaned as he rammed into it. “You killed Jake?!” I asked. “How could you?! He was your friend, your wingman!” “HE HAD YOU!” He yelled. “He had what I wanted! I wasn’t going to let him take you away from me!” He grabbed my biceps, pulling me close. “He had you.” He said quietly, his forehead dropping to mine. “Bradley, I-I didn’t know.” I told him.
I never thought Bradley was interested in me, I never had a clue. “Would you have said yes if I asked you out?” If he had asked me out a week ago, I would’ve jumped at the chance. I’ve always had a soft spot for Bradley and I had a huge crush on his when he first met. “Yes.” It was a whisper, but one that made the grin on his face grow. His lips slammed into mine and my eyes widened in shock. Soon he pulled away and smiled down at me. “I love you.” He said and I panicked. But before I could even respond he stepped back and opened the top dresser drawer. “I’ve packed the dresser and closet with clothes you might like and of course the dresser is packed with old shirts of mine for you to sleep in. Everything you need is in the bathroom and I’ll come down here and take the chain off once a day so you can shower.” He said before facing me. “If you need anything else, just yell for me, okay? Even if it’s in the middle of the night.” He said and I nodded. “Just remember, I’m doing this to protect you. They can’t arrest you if they don’t know where you are, and I won’t let you take the fall for something you didn’t do.” He said as he gently took my hands in his. “It’ll all be okay, I promise.” With that, he kissed my forehead and went upstairs.
I was very cautious of what I said as the days went on. Bradley was getting more volatile and I did not want to set him off. I was slowly gaining his trust, he no longer chains me back up immediately after my showers, he gives me some leeway. He even left me unchained when he went to work one day, but he did lock the basement door. I watched the news almost daily and I saw the announcement where the police were now looking for me, saying I was a murderer and that I should not be approached because I am dangerous. I cried the day of Jake’s funeral. I couldn’t be there and Bradley refused to even talk about it, telling me he’s gone now and he should be the only one I’m thinking about. He did keep me updated with the team. Apparently Natasha had a breakdown when I was declared ‘missing’. The rest of the team isn’t doing well but they’re pushing through. It was about five o’clock on a Thursday and I heard the front door open. “I can’t do it anymore, Rooster.” It was Natasha. I rushed for the stairs, climbing up as many as possible before the chain pulled on my ankle, stopping me. “What do you mean?” Bradley asked.
“The police stopped me as I was leaving work. They asked if I knew where she was. Bradley, I’m so worried about her. We have no idea where she is, if she’s okay or if this psycho killer has her!” I heard mumbling before Bradley spoke up. “Let me get you some coffee and we’ll sit and talk.” I heard his footsteps grow quieter as he walked to the kitchen. The kitchen was on the complete other side of the house, so this was my chance. “Natasha.” I whisper yelled. “Natasha!” I tried again. No response so I started knocking on the wall. After a moment the doorknob jiggled and I worried Bradley heard me before Nat’s face came into view. She gasped before flying down the stairs towards me. “Oh my god!” She said, tossing her arms around my shoulders and pulling me close. I squeezed her back, tears falling onto her shoulder. “Wh-what-” “He’s crazy. He locked me down here and he won’t let me leave. He committed the murders.” She shook her head. “I know it’s hard to hear Nat but look.” I lifted my ankle and she gasped. “We need to get you out.” I nodded. “I don’t know where the keys are! He usually has them on him.” She nodded. “I’m going to go upstairs, and I’ll try to get a chance to look for them. If not, I’ll get the police.” I nodded. “He can’t catch you down here, so hurry.” She nodded and rushed back upstairs, locking the door behind her.
I sat downstairs for who knows how long, waiting and waiting. But finally I heard the basement door open. I peeked my head around the corner, letting out a breath when I saw Nat. “I got them.” She whispered and stepped down onto the first step. “NAT!” I screamed as Bradley appeared behind her and I watched as he pushed her and her body went tumbling down the stairs. I heard something snap just before her body landed before me on the floor and I let out a scream. “NATASHA!” Her arm was crossed under her back and her leg was bent at an odd angle, but what made me scream was the way her head was turned just a little too far. I panicked, bending down and looking for her pulse, but there wasn’t one. “Oh my god! YOU KILLED HER!” I screamed at him as he came down the stairs. “She was trying to let you out. She was trying to take you away from me!” He yelled out. “I DON’T WANNA BE HERE!” I yelled back. “YOU ARE MINE! YOU WILL STAY HERE AS LONG AS I WANT YOU TO STAY HERE!” He yanked the chain, ripping my leg out from under me, causing me to fall flat on my ass. “You see this! You are mine! This chain binds you to me! Why can’t you see that I love you and I only want to take care of you?!” Tears of his own fell as I choked on a sob. “Oh, I’m sorry baby.” He said, wiping his tears away. “I just can’t think of my life without you. I can’t lose you.” He said, pulling me close to him.
Soon he pulled away and looked down at Nat’s body. “You need to understand that this is what happens when you try to leave me.” He said as he turned to me. “This was your fault.” I cried because in reality, it was. “But it’s okay, baby. I forgive you. You’ll just have to learn.” I flinched as he leaned forward and pressed his lips to my forehead. “Why don’t you take a nap, and I’ll figure out what to do with her body?” I was trembling as he lifted me, laying me in the bed before he walked over, picked up Nat’s body and the keys before going upstairs and locking the basement door. I stared up at the ceiling, thinking about everything. Maybe I should stop trying to leave. Other people will die if I don’t. Besides, it’s not so bad. He could’ve left me in a dingy basement, but instead I have a bed, I get to shower whenever I want, he feeds me and I have a tv. That’s how I came to the conclusion, I will just listen to Bradley. This is my life now.

okay kind of long post incoming because i've just now figured out how i want to word this. i made a little post a while ago saying that i think maya started to consider phoenix her family when he insisted that he would help her in 2-2 despite her thinking that she killed someone and gave him her magatama and that i think phoenix started considering her as his family when he realized she was kidnapped and his vision started going gray and blacking out in a way it hasn't ever done for any other character and while i could make an entirely separate post detailing maya's side of things i'm going to focus on phoenix for now. i don't know if this is a proper analysis or something i'm just rambling lmao
okay. as we all know. phoenix does not believe in people unconditionally unless they have given him prior reason to do so (like edgeworth and mia). this exchange that happens in aa1 is, i think, the biggest example of him admitting it out loud:
Phoenix: I'm going to believe in you two until the end.
Larry: Us two?
Maya: Edgeworth and... who else? You mean me right?
Larry: Nah! He means me! Right, Nick?
Phoenix: Yeah, you, Larry.
Maya: Not... me?
Maya: ...
while it clearly hurts for maya to hear i think it makes sense. they've known each other for a very short time at this point and phoenix does, at this point, have more reason to trust in larry than he does maya (even though that trust seems pretty much revoked by the time aa3 rolls around because of larry admitting he was the one who stole the lunch money that caused the class trial at the end of turnabout goodbyes but i digress). while they're still in the process of quickly becoming good friends and while maya does seem to have grown attached to phoenix more quickly than phoenix to her (presumably because phoenix had defended her when no one else would) it's clear that phoenix isn't quite at the point she is. HOWEVER! according to rfta he also gets so depressed at the fact that she went back to kurain village to train that he literally doesn't take a single case for two months until he meets someone (ema) that reminds him so much of maya that he can't say no. fast forward to aa2:
Phoenix: What's wrong?
Maya: Are you sure? I mean, I'm guilty! I'm a murderer!
Phoenix: No one's decided that yet.
Maya: But I did! I killed that person... with these... two hands...!
Phoenix: That's enough, Maya.
Maya: It's hopeless! If you defend me, you'll lose, I'm sure...
Phoenix: Stop it!
Maya: ... ...Help me... Nick, help me... I'm scared...
Phoenix: Don't worry, I will. When is the trial?
this exchange is interesting to me because it's at this point that maya holds him back from leaving and gives him the magatama. their friendship, even though they've only just been reunited, is strong enough that phoenix insists that no one's decided WHO the killer is yet even in the face of maya admitting she thinks she's done it. but the thing IS—phoenix doesn't explicitly state he BELIEVES she hadn't done it. and when the topic of belief does come up later in the case, this is what ensues:
Maya: Um, Nick...
Phoenix: Yeah?
Maya: Why do you believe in me? Why do you think I didn't kill Dr. Grey?
Phoenix: ...Because of something Mia told me.
phoenix says out loud that the reason he believes wholeheartedly in maya's innocence (NOW, mind you) isn't because of his belief in maya's character, it's because of mia's words: spirit mediums can't dream when they channel. and he wholeheartedly believes in mia, which means that he now wholeheartedly believes in maya's innocence by EXTENSION.
and then farewell, my turnabout happens. and again, the minute he hears that maya's been kidnapped, his eyesight goes grayscale and starts fading like it doesn't do for any other character in the series:
Phoenix: (M-My sight... Everything's fading away... Maya... Maya... Maya's been kidnapped!)
and suddenly, phoenix is doing everything in his goddamn power to try to get her back. it's to the point that even the people of the gallery start turning against him when he attempts to pin the blame on adrian andrews to buy some time. it's even to the point where MIA, of all people, starts looking at him with seemingly genuine disapproval and not just her usual exasperation when he fucks up in court. and the only thought running through his head?
Phoenix: (This is to save Maya... This is to save Maya... Even if the whole world turns against me, this is one fight I can't give up on!)
Mia: ...
and then the case is over, and maya and phoenix have this exchange (as well as the happy little picture which always make me want to combust so i'm putting it in this post because look at them):
Phoenix: M-M-M... MAYA!
Pearl: Mystic Maya! Mystic Mayaaaaaaaa!
Maya: Oh, Nick! I knew you would come through! You got Engarde convicted, like I knew you would... And on top of that, you even rescued me!
Phoenix: Well, of course I did! You know I would never desert you!
and it's DIFFERENT when phoenix says it this time. when he told her he wouldn't abandon her all the way back in aa1 it was different. it was when she thought she'd been abandoned by everyone and phoenix compared it to his own past and made the decision to stay by her side through that trial partly because of that (and partly because of the fact that she was mia's sister). this time, when phoenix says he would never desert her, he EXCLAIMS it and states it like it's a simple fact of life. he would never desert her! that's all there is to it! and from then on things change. aa3 is known for its phoenix&maya moments for a reason: the banter is hilarious, the dynamics sublime, and if you didn't really see it before, you REALLY start to notice that you're getting hit with the wacky friendship/sibling-like shenanigans (maya whacking phoenix over the head with the shichishito is, of course, the first thing that comes to mind, but there's so so so many more moments) now. the conversation of "belief" between them starts in the stolen turnabout, where pearl starts crying and tells phoenix she'll never forgive him for taking ron delite's case. but when he asks maya about it?
Phoenix: And what about you...? Are you OK with me taking Mr. DeLite's case...?
Maya: Y-Yeah... I'm fine, Nick. I believe in you.
Phoenix: ... *sniffle* (I think I'm going to cry.)
she believes, wholeheartedly, in phoenix. and later, of course, bridge to the turnabout happens. you see how phoenix quite literally knocks larry (who he once said he'd always believe in) out of the way despite larry's very rational protests that the burning bridge was too dangerous to try and cross in his effort to reach maya on the OFF CHANCE that the murderer had fled to the other side. despite the fact that phoenix, just hours earlier, had been so terrified of the bridge that he needed literal time to recover after crossing it. and when dahlia-as-iris starts trying to pin the murder on maya....
Dahlia/Iris: I saw her commit the crime with my very own eyes... And then I cleaned up the area to try to protect her.
Phoenix: OBJECTION! Th-That's ridiculous! Maya could never do such a--
INSTANT dismissal. INSTANT refusal. it's not at all like his rationalizations (and his trust in mia over maya) in 2-2. he BELIEVES, wholeheartedly, in maya. in the fact that maya could never kill anyone. and the thing about it is that his belief in maya didn't come from some grand showcase of saving him like mia and edgeworth did—it was the product of years of friendship. throughout the entirety of the time that dahlia tries to pin the murder on maya, phoenix refuses to even CONSIDER the idea:
Phoenix: (I still can't believe it... The idea of Maya cornering someone at knifepoint! It's just silly!)
bridge to the turnabout even ENDS with maya saying that phoenix is one of the feys now. she calls herself his big sister TWICE and the only objection he has to it is that she was trying to claim that SHE was the older one and not the other way around. he (as shown by the end credits) literally ended up sitting under a freezing waterfall with her for the special course spirit training despite not being a medium at all. it's very clear by the end of the trilogy that phoenix and maya are absolutely irreplaceable in each other's lives, no questions asked.
so. overall. i think the moment that the dynamic between phoenix and maya shifted from "good friends" to "family" is actually different between the two of them. for maya, it was near the beginning of jfa, when she gave phoenix her magatama after he refused to let her admit she was guilty without a fight. for phoenix, it was near the end of jfa, when maya was kidnapped and he realized that he'd do anything to save her. and i think this shows throughout the entirety of trials & tribulations. i don't have a proper ending to to this or anything they're just my blorbos and i love them so much
#GAHHHHHHH. EVERY TIME I THINK ABOUT THEM I WANT TO EXPLODEEEEEEE#phoenix wright#maya fey#ace attorney

vivid bad squad x reader headcanons (separately)
kohane azusawa
Met you during a Wonderlands x Showtime show at Phoenix Wonderland
You two were sitting on the same bench, next to each other
It was really awkward since you two were the only ones on the bench
You ended up talking and gaining a new friend that day.
You and Kohane ended up meeting up on the weekends and going on trips to Phoenix Wonderland together
She ended up gifting you a Phenny plushie on one of your trips there
Kohane ended up slowly developing a crush on you
An noticed that she was starting to space out a lot recently and asked what was wrong
She became flustered and said it was nothing as she started stuttering
An caught on quickly on to what was happening.
an shiraishi
An was in one of your classes and hadn't even noticed you until a couple months.
One day, she fell asleep during class and didn't wake up until class was already over.
An looked around the classroom and realized that class was over, as the only other person in the room was you.
She glanced at her empty notebook, supposed to be filled with notes, and glanced back at you, packing up your bag.
An dashed over to you in a hurry
"Hey, do you mind letting me borrow your notes really quick? I... fell asleep."
"Not at all, go ahead."
An quickly wrote down all the notes on her notebook and handed your notes back to you.
"Thank you so much!! I'm An Shiraishi, by the way. Nice to meet you."
After that, you would occasionally meet up with An
An eventually found herself falling for you.
akito shinonome
Akito being Akito, absolutely refused to admit he has a crush on you
The two of you were co-workers at his part time job and occasionally talked.
You eventually became friends with him and hung out with him a lot, going shopping, amusement parks, etc.
Akito started to grow feelings for you but decided to ignore it.
An and Mizuki found out and immediately started to tease him
toya aoyagi
Didn't realize until really later on.
One day he was sitting there until he started thinking
"Wait, why do I feel about them this way?"
The two of you were pretty decent friends
The two of you talked and went to the arcade from time to time
He plays those crane games at the arcade to get you a plushie, and get the plushie flawlessly every time.
Tbh, he doesn't really act that different from normal.
He hopes to confess to you one day, just not yet.

Hi! I was wondering… is there any fic where Harry is really possessive of Hermione it can be just a possessive friend or secret crush and when he learns about dramione things go nuclear (?) or something like that.
THANK U 🤍
The Phoenix Potion by FedonCiadale - T, 111 chapters, Words: 237,679 - Twenty years after the battle of Hogwarts…. Harry is head auror and is worried about cases where Muggleborn children meet with accidents, Ron is a famous Quidditch keeper. Both haven’t talked to Hermione for ages and certainly not to her husband, Draco Malfoy. Narcissa Malfoy struggles with a curse, and Neville and Luna try to stay friends with all. The key to solving the problems may lie in the past, a time nobody really wants to revisit and some can’t.
Lost Souls of Nott Castle By: mezy - M, 44 chapters, Words: 125,761 - Everyone lost something in the war. Some of them lost everything. Hermione had nothing left. No family. No friends. Until she finds everything she ever needed amongst the most unlikely of people. Together they will face adversity, battle inner demons and navigate their futures. Rated M, EWE, Friendship, Romance, Action, Mystery, Dramione
Broken by inadaze22 - E, 37 Chapters - Draco felt something close to pity for the woman in front of him. While that disturbed him to no end, what really disgusted him was the fact that something had broken Hermione Granger’s spirit beyond recognition.
His Favourite Muggleborn by FranceHufflepuff - M, 15 chapters - 2004. Harry Potter could not help but stick his nose to where it doesn’t belong. He discovered that Hermione’s Slytherin friends had invented a powerful and advanced time-turner that could take someone back up to thirty years. He planned a raid at the Malfoy residence to confiscate it. He had a confrontation with a very angry Hermione Granger-Malfoy. A confrontation that led to an argument. An argument that led to yelling and fighting. And the exchange of spells led to her unconsciousness. She had travelled back in time and found herself in her childhood home with her parents, in her eleven-year-old self. She sobbed, realizing that she was no longer an adult, and Draco wasn’t around. She hated Harry Potter. After everything she did for him after she had forgiven him for abandoning her when she needed him the most, he still could not trust her judgment. He could no longer trust her, either, since she became friends with Slytherins and dated their schoolyard bully. She swore she wouldn’t be friends with him anymore. Not this time.
Once Lost but Found Again by Graendoll - E, 3 chapters - Draco left her bed in the middle of the night four months ago and theyve been apart ever since. Frankly, he’s sick of it. *** “Draco Malfoy, stop behaving as though you’re an idiot. I know you have a brain in there. Please elect to use it.” “Good lord, Granger, are you ill? Did you just accuse me of having a brain?”
Familiar Taste of Poison - Shananigans10 - M, 12 chapters - Hermione, bookstore owner know-it-all is approached by the extremely wealthy and highly desired Draco in hopes that she will aid him with his research. Danger, uncertainty and passion ensues as Hermione is targeted by an unknown person who is threatening her very existance. Will she make it out alive? Dark!Harry non-con mentioned
The Promise By: JoJo4 - M, 16 chapters - Draco promised to return to Hermione, but two years later she has lost faith. When he finally he reenters her life, why is she left only with questions? Complete.
